SITE SELECTION The site is situated in Kanpur, Uttar Pradeh. The site selected for this thesis project is a 1.1 km stretch of the flyover of NH-34 from JK Colony Chauraha to Harjinder Nagar Chauraha in Kanpur. It is an arterial road that connects it to the state capital Lucknow and is quite responsible for the impression it creates on the onlookers.

KANPUR being a top tier industrial city is often visited by business people from neighbouring cities as well as from around the world.

Since the city houses a range of industries and factories, the pollution level is higher than the healthy level. The number of vehicles has risen significantly in recent years, giving rise to all sorts of pollution steeply.

The thesis topic deals with the rejuvenation of the urban voids, specifically the ones under the flyovers to transform the urban fabric from a stained one to a glittering social and recreational hub. Urban voids can accommodate a variety of activities ranging from business activities to being “people’s places” for hosting social gatherings and chit-chat corners.

The city is in the development phase. The city has a varied range of tourist spots ranging from historical to religious, thereby this proposal shall only add to its qualitative parameters.

The citizens are way too free willed than preferable. They often tend to use and misuse the public properties.

METHODOLOGY PLACEMAKING it involves looking at, listening to, and asking questions of the people who live, work and play in particular space, to discover needs and aspirations. TACTICAL URBANISM It involves locally sourced, context-based, readily available and re-configurable materials like crates, portable planter boxes, portable furniture, paints, etc to create opportunities to recycle and repurpose existing infrastructure.

Rain gardens are provided around the pavements and parking spots to help easy percolation of rainwater and excessive irrigation to recharge the ground water table.

A dog’s park is divided into zones for small dogs, big dogs and a zone for water sports.

The site is locate on the outskirts of Lucknow, which is well connected to all the major landmarks of the city. The idea was to develop 40 acres of land in DLF Garden City for various classes of society to reside together without making any of them feel like they do not belong there.

THE KID’S ROOM FOLLOWS THE COLOUR SCHEME OF NEUTRAL COLOURS WITH A POP OF BLUE TO GIVE IT A MORE CHILD APPROPRIATE FEEL. THE WALLS ARE MAJORLY IN GREY WITH THE BEDSIDE PANEL IN EXPOSED BRICKWORK TO GIVE IT A CHEERFUL AMBIENCE.
