BASEBALL MEDIA GUIDE

Redlands Baseball 2008

SeaSon outlook Spring 2008 brings a lot of excitement to the Redlands Baseball Program. Preseason ranked 11th by the NJCAA and a slew of returners, the 2008 group of Cougars have Millington, Tennessee, and a trip to the NJCAA World Series in their sights! One thing hasn’t changed and that’s Redlands winning ways and the desire to be the best, both on the field and in the classroom. After the second straight year of winning the BiState Conference and then winning the Region II tournament, a few additions have proven to be key to pave the way to Millington. Returnees expected to contribute are second baseman Brandon Hey, shortstop Tom Dicker, third baseman Alex Aycoth, and outfielders Sean Iago, CJ Comstock, and Jake Forsythe. Catcher and First Team All-American Jack Larner will provide stability for a talented pitching staff. On the mound, sophomores Logan Davis and Ricky Cramer will anchor a very talented group of arms. Newcomers to the team, Logan Rainey, Patric Tolentino, Jarod Palmer, Ryan Fisher, and Matt Cartwright will be asked to play important roles offensively and on the mound to help us reach our goal of competing for a national title. With just the right blend of returnees and newcomers, this season will be nothing short of exciting for the Redlands baseball family. It’s a talented group of young men; 2008 looks to be fantastic year for Cougar Baseball!

Under Newgent’s guidance, the Cougars finished last season with a 4415 record and a #3 national ranking. For the second straight year, the Cougars won the Bi-State Conference with a 14-6 record and followed that up with three straight victories in the Region II tourney to repeat as Region II Champions. The Cougar’s season ended in Scottsdale, Arizona, with a loss to Scottsdale who went on to finish 3rd in last year’s World Series in Millington, TN. Newgent began his collegiate athletic career at Redlands Community College as a catcher under former coach Don Brown. During that season, the Cougars went to the NJCAA World Series in Millington, Tennessee, where they finished fourth. After leaving RCC, Newgent completed his collegiate playing experience at the University of Indianapolis. His collegiate accolades include all tournament catcher honors at the NJCAA World Series, two-time member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) AllConference Team and Academic All-Conference Team, NCAA North Central Region Team, and Most Valuable Player during his senior season at University of Indianapolis. Prior to coaching at RCC, Newgent served as Assistant Baseball Coach at Olney Central Community College in Olney, Illinois, where they finished with a record of 40-20 and a trip to the Region 24 Tournament. He was also the Assistant Baseball Coach at University of Indianapolis for three seasons and helped guide the team to a third place finish in the NCAA Division II World Series in 2000, and a school best 51-15 record in 2001. Newgent is a member of the American Baseball Coaches Association. He earned his Associate of Arts from Redlands Community College in 1997, his Bachelor of Arts in History in 1999, and his Master of Business Administration in 2002 from the University of Indianapolis.
