Teams consist of five players. The team’s score is derived from the four lowest individual scores during that round. Typically there are three tournament rounds and a practice round the day prior to the start of the tournament. Each round the team will drop the highest team members score and total the remaining four scores, for the teams round total.

www.redlandscc.edu/cougar-athletics

Most golf courses are set-up with a par of 72 strokes (some can be 70 or 71), the allotted strokes how many swings of the clushould take to finish an 18 hole course. Par is the amount of shots given on each hole (i.e. par 3, par 4, etc). An “eagle” is two below par, a “birdie” is one under par, and a “bogey” is one over par. Golf is played with clubs and a ball. A golfer will usually use a driver or fairway wood off the tee for thei first shot. From then on irons are used to hit towards the green. Once the ball is on the green a player will use their putter to putt the ball in the hole.

2

Golf was invented in Scotland. It is a game of honor, integrity and sportsmanship. Tournament team golf is played with 5 team members, the lowest 4 scores are counted toward the team total. One round consists of 18 holes. All play is governed by USGA rules. Collegiate women’s golf plays roughly around 6200 total yards on usually a par 72 golf course. While the concept of golf is quite simple, getting a 1¾ inch golf ball into a 4½ inch cup in the least strokes possible is extremely challenging. You must respect the rewards & letdowns of the round & absolutely engoy the qlk outside.

THE

COUGAR

The story of the Redlands Cougar is shrouded in mystery. The Cougar first appeared as the official Redlands mascot post-1970. Prior to that Redland’s (originally called El Reno Junior College) mascot was the Chieftain, which was chosen to correspond with El Reno High School’s mascot the Indian. Now, this elusive nameless cat can occasionally be spotted around campus. Be On The Lookout!

MATT NEWGENT

2ND SEASON AS ATHLETIC DIRECTOR 7TH SEASON AS BASEBALL HEAD COACH

Matt Newgent begins his seventh season as head coach for the Cougar baseball team and also serves as Athletic Director. Under Newgent’s guidance the Cougar’s have been ranked each of the last four seasons, and as high as a #2 in the national rankings in 2008. Since Coach Newgent’s arrival six years ago, the program has again regained its prominence nationally. Newgent and his staff spent the 2009 off-season continuing to renovate the Cougar baseball facility, and recruiting quality student-athletes to ensure continued success for the program. Newgent began his collegiate athletic career at Redlands Community College as a catcher under former coach Don Brown. During that season the Cougars went to the NJCAA World Series in Millington, Tennessee, where they finished fourth. After leaving RCC, Newgent completed his collegiate playing experience at University of Indianapolis. His collegiate accolades include all tournament catcher honors at the NJCAA World Series, two-time member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) All-Conference Team and Academic All-Conference Team, NCAA North Central Region Team, and Most Valuable Player during his senior season at University of Indianapolis. SEASON

OUTLOOK

The 2009-2010 women’s golf season will bring a lot of new faces to the Cougar’s lineup. The depature of Nicola Race (University of Missouri), Emily Kwak (Towson State University), and Andrew Kaelin (Florida State University) will leave a lot of holes to be filled in the Cougars top five. Returning off last year’s National Championship team is Kelly MacPhail, a second team All-American from Manchester, England; Kaitlin Higginbotham, a honorable mention All-American from Norman, Oklahoma; Crystal Caviness from Seminole, Texas, and Brittany Beckett from Mansfield, Texas.

www.redlandscc.edu/cougar-athletics

Kaitlin Higginbotham played in every tournament last year for the Cougars, posting a 7th place finish at the Oklahoma Intercollegiate with rounds of 75 and 76. Katilin finished second at the University of Mary Hardin Baylor Lady Cru International, with rounds of 75 and 83. She was an All-Region II Team member with a fourth place finish with rounds of 84 and 77. Kelly MacPhail comes off a strong Spring 2009. Kelly finished 4th at the 2009 Blue Bonnett Classic with rounds of 84 and 79, and she finished 8th at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic hosted by the University of Oklahoma with rounds of 78, 78, and 79. Crystal Caviness and Brittany Beckett saw limited playing time last year, but they are looking to fill the void of previous graduating sophomores.

12

Joining the 2009-2010 women’s golf team as freshmen are Sarah Harper of Duncan, Oklahoma; Kelsey Chugg of Gilbert, Arizona; Hailee Axelsen of Chandler, Arizona; and Jessica Schiele of Grimsdy, England who will be joining the Cougars after the Christmas Break. Sarah Harper was an All-State Golf selection to the west team in 2009. Sarah was also part of her team’s 2007, 2008, and 2009 State Championships. Kelsey Chugg and Hailee Axelsen both come from the Phoenix area. Kelsey has won numerous high school and junior golf tournaments in the state of Arizona. Hailee was a member of the Corona Del Sol golf team, and part of a lot of team and individual victories. Rounding out the freshmen is Jessica Schiele, a nice addition to the lineup for the spring semester. Schiele has competed in and won numerous individual and county tournaments across England. All of these pieces look to fit together as the women’s golf team looks to win its third National Championship in a row in May at Daytona Beach, Florida.
