4TH SEASON AS ATHLETIC DIRECTOR 9TH SEASON AS HEAD BASEBALL COACH
Matt Newgent begins his ninth season as head coach for the Cougar baseball team and also serves as Athletic Director. Under Newgent’s guidance the Cougar’s have been ranked each of the last four seasons, and as high as a #2 national ranking in 2008. Since Coach Newgent’s arrival nine years ago, the program has again regained its prominence nationally. Newgent and his staff spent the 2009 off-season continuing a renovation of the Cougar baseball facility, while continuing to recruit quality student-athletes to ensure continued success for the program. Newgent began his collegiate athletic career at Redlands Community College as a catcher under former coach, Don Brown. During that season the Cougars went to the NJCAA World Series in Millington, Tennessee, where they finished fourth. After leaving RCC, Newgent completed his collegiate playing experience at the University of Indianapolis. His collegiate accolades include all tournament catcher honors at the NJCAA World Series, two-time member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) All-Conference Team and Academic All-Conference Team, NCAA North Central Region Team, and Most Valuable Player during his senior season at the University of Indianapolis. Prior to coaching at RCC, Newgent served as Assistant Baseball Coach at Olney Central Community College in Olney, Illinois, where they finished with a record of 40-20 and a trip to the Region 24 Tournament. He was also the Assistant Baseball Coach at the University of Indianapolis for three seasons and helped guide the team to a third place finish in the NCAA Division II World Series in 2000, and a school best 51-15 record in 2001. Newgent is a member of the American Baseball Coaches Association. He earned his Associate of Arts from Redlands Community College in 1997, his Bachelor of Arts in History in 1999, and his Master of Business Administration in 2002 from the University of Indianapolis. SEASON
OUTLOOK
After an injury ridden 2011, the spring of 2012 brings a lot of anticipation to the Redlands Baseball Program. With a revamped pitching staff and additions to the lineup Redlands baseball once again has its sights on competing for a Region II championship. One thing hasn’t changed and that’s Redlands winning ways and the desire to be the best, both on the field and in the classroom. With the addition of several newcomers and returning sophomores, this season will be nothing short of exciting for the Redlands baseball family. It’s a talented group of young men; 2012 looks to be fantastic year for Cougar Baseball!
Go Cougars!
THE
COUGAR
The story of the Redlands Cougar is shrouded in mystery. The Cougar first appeared as the official Redlands mascot post-1970. Prior to that Redland’s (originally called El Reno Junior College) mascot was the Chieftain, which was chosen to correspond with El Reno High School’s mascot, the Indian. Now, this elusive nameless cat can occasionally be spotted around campus. Be On The Lookout! 16
