MATT NEWGENT

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

3RD SEASON AS ATHLETIC DIRECTOR 8TH SEASON AS BASEBALL HEAD COACH Matt Newgent begins his eighth season as head coach for the Cougar baseball team and also serves as Athletic Director. Under Newgent’s guidance the Cougar’s have been ranked each of the last four seasons, and as high as a #2 national ranking in 2008. Since Coach Newgent’s arrival seven years ago, the program has again regained its prominence nationally. Newgent and his staff spent the 2009 off-season continuing a renovation of the Cougar baseball facility, while continuing to recruit quality student-athletes to ensure continued success for the program. Newgent began his collegiate athletic career at Redlands Community College as a catcher under former coach Don Brown. During that season the Cougars went to the NJCAA World Series in Millington, Tennessee, where they finished fourth. After leaving RCC, Newgent completed his collegiate playing experience at the University of Indianapolis. His collegiate accolades include all tournament catcher honors at the NJCAA World Series, two-time member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) All-Conference Team and Academic All-Conference Team, NCAA North Central Region Team, and Most Valuable Player during his senior season at the University of Indianapolis. Prior to coaching at RCC, Newgent served as Assistant Baseball Coach at Olney Central Community College in Olney, Illinois, where they finished with a record of 40-20 and a trip to the Region 24 Tournament. He was also the Assistant Baseball Coach at the University of Indianapolis for three seasons and helped guide the team to a third place finish in the NCAA Division II World Series in 2000, and a school best 51-15 record in 2001. Newgent is a member of the American Baseball Coaches Association. He earned his Associate of Arts from Redlands Community College in 1997, his Bachelor of Arts in History in 1999, and his Master of Business Administration in 2002 from the University of Indianapolis. Coach Newgent, a native of Piedmont, now resides in Yukon with his wife Christa and their son, Ian. 12

THE

COUGAR

The story of the Redlands Cougar is shrouded in mystery. The Cougar first appeared as the official Redlands mascot post-1970. Prior to that Redland’s (originally called El Reno Junior College) mascot was the Chieftain, which was chosen to correspond with El Reno High School’s mascot, the Indian. Now, this elusive nameless cat can occasionally be spotted around campus. Be On The Lookout!

REDLANDS COMMUNITY COLLEGE

SEASON

OUTLOOK Last year the Cougar’s offense averaged 77.3 points per game while the defense allowed only 56.3 points per game. Head basketball coach Jay Niehues is excited about the 2010-11 basketball season. He hopes this younger team can improve on last year’s 16 and 16 finish. The cougars return just three players from last season’s squad, all three accomplished starters. Returning are sophomores Dionna Glass, Kyesha Hall, and Shalay Stancle. Dionna Glass started all 30 games as forward for the Cougars last season. She averaged 12 points, 5.7 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game. Glass, a hard nose player who plays 100% everyday, will be called upon heavily in the coming season. Also returning is last year’s lead scorer Kyesha Hall. As guard Hall averaged 13.3 points, 6.4 rebounds, 3 steals, and 2.5 assists per game. She is regarded as one of the best players in the league. Expect her to have another big year. As guard Shalay Stancle received valuable playing time during her first year in a Cougar uniform. Stancle averaged 6.5 points, 3 rebounds, 1 steal, and 2.5 assists per game. She played well at the end of the year and that should carry over into this year. Transferring from Florida State College at Jacksonville is sophomore guard Lakaisha Jones. As a starter at her previous school Jones was the second highest scorer on the team. She played 24 games and ended the season with 180 points 55 assists 32 steals and 55 rebounds. Jones will have a chance to put her skills on display with the lady cougars. New players have signed with the Cougars from elite area programs. Competing for guard is Ndeye Ngom an international student from Dakar, Senegal, Katie Weatherford from Ardmore, Laila Suleiman from Yukon, Nikki Woodard from Mustang, and Sheana Jones from Oklahoma City. Competing for forward is Christian Williams from Little Elm, Martese Williams from Seminole and Taylor Smith from Shawnee. Martese will have a chance to be an impact player at the forward spot. Mariel Miles from Calumet and Joy Hearn from Jonesboro, LA will fill the position of post. Mariel will have a chance to make a bang in the second semester.
