ABOUT THE COVER It all starts in Hong Kong. Last February, we welcomed the Chinese New Year with a theme highlighting The Great Silk Road Initiative and several features on the Asian film and streaming arena. We knew that we will be back with equally interesting content but we never thought it would be as early as September! The inevitable cannot wait. On our cover is Hong Kong's "The Golden Egg", nicknamed as such to convey the golden opportunities waiting for anyone who would set foot on the venue. The auditorium in the Hong Kong Science Park was named after the country's only Nobel Laureate, Dr. Charles Kuen Kao, whose ground-breaking work in fiber optic telecommunications earned him the nickname ?Godfather of Broadband?. The Hong Kong Science Park (HKSTP; Chinese: ? ? ? ? ? ) is a science park in Pak Shek Kok, New Territories, Hong Kong. It sits on the Tolo Harbour waterfront, near the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The park is administered by the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation, a statutory body established in 2001. Reclamation for the Science Park site at the southern part of the area was completed in December 1999. Science Park Phase II development was designed to accommodate applied research and development facilities. It contains eight high-tech buildings comprising two Energy Towers and six R&D office buildings (four of which are combined provisions for laboratory facilities) and is set in a park-like campus environment for the enjoyment of both tenants and the public alike. The overall site and individual buildings are served by an energy-saving district cooling system, creating a sustainable environment capitalizing on a seafront location. Highly adaptable buildings with energy-efficient features are carefully placed in a landscaped setting to maximize sea views. The design encourages and sustains social interaction amongst park users and provides a much-cherished public open space in urban Hong Kong. L&O Architects services included master planning, architectural design, interior design, and project leadership in the multi-disciplinary consultant team. The place is quite familiar for EDM fans as it has been the venue for the Hong Kong edition of Sónar. Photo Courtesy of allarchitecturedesigns.com and The Hongkong Science Park

The world has never been so technologically advanced the way it currently is. Despite the many challenges, the creative human mind continues to evolve. They say change is the great engine of technology and we continue to witness the wonders it can bring if utilized for the greater good. In this issue, we revisit Asia with a special highlight on Hong Kong as a new world begins to take shape through the BRI (Belt and Road Initiative) lifted from the rich history of The Great Silk Road which paved the way to worldwide trading and marked the beginning of more connected cultures. But will history repeat itself? Our back cover is the well-known sight in HONG KONG - Illuminated Chinese Aqualuna on Victoria Harbour, on a foggy Winter Night taken a few years back by Andres Garcia.

"Ideas do not always come in a flash but by diligent trial-and-error experiments that take time and thought." - Charles K. Kao
HIS WORK The rapid transmission of signals over long distances is fundamental to the flow of information in our time. Since the 1930's thin filaments, or fibers, of glass have been used to see inside the body, but these long remained unusable for long-distance information transfer because too much light was lost along the way. In the 1960's, Charles Kuen Kao presented a solution: fibers of very pure glass transported sufficient light. Together with laser technology, his solution has made telecommunication using optical fibers possible. Sir Charles K. Kao receiving his Nobel Prize from His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden at the Stockholm Concert Hall, 10 December 2009 Copyright © The Nobel Foundation 2009 <https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/physics/2009/kao/photo-gallery/>
What is fiber optics? We're used to the idea of information traveling in different ways. When we speak into a landline telephone, a wire cable carries the sounds from our voice into a socket in the wall, where another cable takes it to the local telephone exchange. Cellphones work a different way: they send and receive information using invisible radio waves? a technology called wireless because it uses no cables. Fiber optics works a third way. It sends information coded in a beam of light down a glass or plastic pipe. It was originally developed for endoscopes in the 1950s to help doctors see inside the human body without having to cut it open first. In the 1960s, engineers found a way of using the same technology to transmit telephone calls at the speed of light (normally that's 186,000 miles or 300,000 km per second in a vacuum, but slows to about two-thirds this speed in a fiber-optic cable).Photo by: Compare Fibre
One of the Legacies of Silicon Valley, Dr. Nickhill Jakatdar His passion for new and creative ideas came into fruition a few years back when he co-founded Vuclip, a mobile video-on-demand platform, in 2008 along with Dr. Xinhui Niu. While its initial roots were in building a mobile video transcoding technology platform, Dr. Jakatdar and the team refocused the efforts on creating a freemium business model-based direct-to-consumer service for the emerging markets. This meant getting into the content licensing business with the top content providers in the market as well as integrating into the billing platforms of mobile telecom operators in order to reach the masses. Vuclip introduced a number of key features in 2008-2011 that later became the mainstay of most direct-to-consumer mobile video platforms, including delivering short-form content, creating a mobile-centric technology platform with an emphasis on reducing data usage, offering a freemium service with micro-billing for premium content, and many other such innovations. By 2014 Vuclip had reached about $10M in revenues, had integrations with about 20 mobile telecom operators across 10 countries in SE Asia, India, and the Middle East, and had about 200 employees. Vuclip had raised about $40M before its acquisition from New Enterprise Associates (NEA), JAFCO, SingTel and had Silicon Valley luminaries, such as the late Stanford Professor Rajeev Motwani, Tony Bates (ex-CEO of Skype), and Steve Boom (VP - Music at Amazon) on its advisory board. In 2015, Vuclip was acquired by PCCW, a Hong Kong-based telecom company that was also a pay-TV provider, with an ambition to become the Netflix of emerging markets. The service was rebranded as Viu. Post the acquisition, Dr. Jakatdar continued to run the company as CEO and added original content productions across more than 10 languages and more than 100 new originals over the period of 3 years from 2016-2019. By the time Dr. Jakatdar left, Vuclip had about 450 employees, 40M monthly active users, more than 40 mobile telecom carrier integrations, and had one of the two highest minutes per active user engagement times amongst all the OTT providers in Asia. Dr. Jakatdar was granted 4 patents for the IP generated during his time at Vuclip. In June 2019 he joined GenePath Diagnostics, Inc. a next-generation molecular diagnostics company based out of Pune, India, and Ann Arbor, Michigan, as its CEO, where he is working in creating tests and test kits for genetic disorders, cancers, and infectious diseases, such as Covid-19, tuberculosis, dengue, etc .Dr. Jakatdar grew up in India in Kanpur, U.P. He completed his bachelor 's degree in Electrical Engineering from the College of Engineering - Pune (COEP) in 1995. He graduated with his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of California, Berkeley in January 2000 under Professor Costas Spanos. Dr. Jakatdar has also completed the Genomics and Genetics Program at Stanford University. He is married to Sudnya Shroff and they live with their three children in Los Altos Hills, California.

Replacing time-consuming and labor-intensive manual processes, TAMS is a holistic system with real-time updates of track allocation status and access progress, providing end-to-end visibility of workflows. In addition to optimizing productivity, the system has built-in safety rules to conduct conflict checks on each scheduled track access request against safety requirements, ensuring safety standards are upheld for all stakeholders. The implementation of TAMS has saved the operator 30,000 manhours per year and contributed to increased rail reliability through optimized maintenance efforts. In 2020, the North-South Line (NSL) achieved more than 1.3 million Mean Kilometres Between Failure (MKBF), and the East-West Line (EWL) achieved more than 1.4 million MKBF. Following the success of TAMS for NSEWL, SMRT Trains has embarked on its implementation for the Circle Line (CCL), Bukit Panjang Light Rail Transit (BPLRT) network, and six depots, to reap further productivity gains.

The Context TaiKoo Place is an office campus situated in east HK Island. This complex is a gradual transformation from an industrial estate since the 1970s. With a height of 308m, One Island East (OIE) is the tallest building in TaiKoo Place. The site used to be occupied by two old factory buildings. The reduced footprint of the new building released the congested urban fabric and improved the streetscape at pedestrian level. The new building is connected to the rest of the TaiKoo Place office campus through a well-established elevated walkway system with link bridges providing pedestrians convenient access to other office buildings and the MTR station. Together with the refurbishment of more than 5,500s.m. landscaped gardens to the East, OIE revitalized the neighborhood towards a better environment. The Building The basic form of the building is a central core square with four rounded corners. It is oriented at 45 degrees to the site configuration to improve the spatial relationship with the neighboring buildings. The corners facing North & South open up at the top floors to address the Harbour view while the corners facing the East and West open out to the open space at the base. The edges of the four façades sail beyond, creating a floating effect, giving lightness to the building. The lighting feature incorporated into the edge of the four façades enhances the floating effect. Vertical architectural fins are introduced at the façade in a staggered pattern to give a subtle texture to the building. The innovative glass wall system employed at the main lobby results in extra tall space with maximum transparency bringing the outside into the interior and vice versa. The upper lobby level is suspended from the ceiling like a floating gallery. Timber is the main finish for the wall and ceiling. The sculptural timber ceiling gives a warm and welcoming feeling in contrast with the glass wall. The typical office has a floor area of 2,300sm. With a structural floor height of 4025mm, clear headroom of 2925mm is achieved. Full-height glazing provides an unobstructed view and natural lighting. What's Wrong with Secretary Kim (Korean: ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ; RR: Kimbiseoga Wae Geureolkka) is a 2018 South Korean television series starring Park Seo-Joon and Park Min-young. It is based on the novel of the same title by Jung Kyung-Yoon which was first published in 2013, which was then serialized into a Webtoon comic by KakaoPage in 2015.
Noble House is a novel by James Clavell, published in 1981 and set in Hong Kong in 1963. The novel is over a thousand pages long and contains dozens of characters and numerous intermingling plot lines. In 1988, it was adapted as a television miniseries for NBC, starring Pierce Brosnan. The miniseries updates the storyline of the novel to the 1980s. The Noble House also is a nickname of Struan's, the trading company featured prominently in most of Clavell's novels. Plot Noble House is set in 1963. The tai-pan, Ian Dunross, struggles to rescue Struan from the precarious financial position left by his predecessor. To this end, he seeks partnership with an American millionaire, while trying to ward off his arch-rival Quillan Gornt, who seeks to destroy Struan's once and for all. Meanwhile, Chinese communists, Taiwanese nationalists, and Soviet spies illegally vie for influence in Hong Kong while the British government seeks to prevent their actions. Anyone seeking to stop them cannot do so without enlisting the aid of Hong Kong's criminal underworld. Other obstacles include water shortages, landslides, bank runs, and stock market crashes. In Noble House, Dunross finds his company the target of a hostile takeover at a time when Struan's is desperately overextended. He is also embroiled in international espionage when he finds himself in possession of secret documents desperately desired by both the KGB and MI6. The novel follows Dunross' attempts to extricate himself from all this and to save Struan's, the Noble House. Background Struan and Company are based on Jardine Matheson & Company, which continues to exist as an Asian trading company. The chief character, Ian Dunross, is believed to be[weasel words] a composite character of two real-life Jardine Matheson taipans, Sir Hugh Barton and Sir Michael Herries. Rothwell-Gornt is based on Butterfield and Swire, now known as Swire Pacific. Quillan Gornt is based on two Swire taipans, John Kidston "Jock" Swire and William Charles Goddard Knowles. Unlike the other Asian Saga novels, Noble House is not closely based on a specific series of events, but is more a snapshot of the 1960s in Hong Kong, serving as a capsule history of Jardine Matheson against the backdrop of the impending Vietnam War and the recent Kim Philby defection. Though the prologue is set on June 8, 1960, against the backdrop of the real Typhoon Mary, the story opens on Sunday, August 18, 1963, and runs through the days immediately preceding the assassination of US President John F. Kennedy. In 1961, Jardine Matheson became a public company, with the initial offer oversubscribed over 56 times, which is attributed in the novel to tai-pan Ian Dunross. In 1963, the Hongkong Land subsidiary of Jardine Matheson (fictionalized as Asian Properties) opened what was then the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, which has today become one of the world's leading hotels. The Dairy Farm subsidiary of Jardine Matheson moved into the supermarket sector in 1964 with the acquisition of Wellcome (fictionalized as Hong Kong General Stores). A Jardine Matheson representative office was established in Australia in 1963 (fictionalized as the next assignment of Linbar Struan). The Ho Pak bank run storyline mirrored the real Hang Seng Bank run in 1965. The two primary banks, Victoria Bank and Blacs, were the fictionalized HSBC and Standard Chartered respectively. The big set-pieces ? the fire on the boat and the landslide ? are also closely modeled on real events (the Jumbo Floating Restaurant fire in 1971 and the Kotewall Road disaster in 1972). The Macau businessman who controlled the gold trade in partnership with Struan's, Lando Mata, is based on a composite of two famous Macau businessmen, Pedro José Lobo and Stanley Ho. The Noble House comprador family the Chens are based on the Hotung family. The American-Chinese scientist who defected to China and helped develop the first atom bomb for China, Dr. Joseph Yu, is a fictionalized version of renowned Caltech scientist Dr. Qian Xuesen. Sir Dunstan Barre is based on Sir Douglas Clague. A major difference between the original novel and the later miniseries adaptation is that the television version changes the setting from 1963 to the late 1980s, and updates visible technology and the general atmosphere accordingly. The looming return of Hong Kong to China in 1997 is frequently mentioned, which was not a major concern in the 1960s.

Richard Li, the man behind the company that Beat Netflix Much has been written about Mr. Richard Li, the billionaire genius in the field of information technology. He belongs to the new breed of business tycoons that changed and will continue to change the perspective of business that continues to grow and expand over the years. This August, Richard Li?s Hong Kong-based streaming business, Asian regional streaming platform Viu has overtaken Netflix in raw subscription terms in Southeast Asia, to rank second among SVOD platforms in the region behind Disney Plus. Forbes listed his net worth in 2020 at $4.5 billion, ranking him 20th on its list of the richest businesspeople in Hong Kong and #638 overall. Richard Li is the son of one of Hong Kong's wealthiest billionaires Li Ka-Shing. He was born at his parent's home in Deepwater Bay, Hong Kong, , He attended St. Paul's Co-educational College in Hong Kong and left at age thirteen to be educated at Menlo School in Atherton, California. To earn money, he took shifts at McDonald's and also worked as a caddy at the local golf course. He attended Menlo College, studying computer engineering, but did not receive a degree; he states that he withdrew from the school for personal reasons after three years. Li acquired Canadian citizenship in the 1980s. His Canadian citizenship has proven valuable to him in his financial dealings, allowing him to make bids for PCCW to purchase stakes in companies such as Air Canada and Bell Canada Enterprises without running afoul of restrictions on foreign ownership. Li is a member of the Global Information Infrastructure Commission and a member of the Center for Strategic and International Studies' International Councillors Group in Washington DC. He was also the Governor of the World Economic Forum for Information Technologies and Telecommunications. During the 2002?03 SARS outbreak, PCCW under Li's direction aided victims by providing telecommunication services to patients, medical staff, and fundraisers; namely, they set up video conferencing for quarantined SARS victims and volunteers to communicate with their families, telephone hotline support for isolated patients and communities to receive medical and legal advice. Li also established a storytime program for children kept home to prevent infection, and call center support for charity fundraisers and community activists. Richard Li and PCCW also donated $1 million to the Business Community Relief Fund for Victims of SARS. Under his direction, employees at PCCW served the community through the company's efforts, and many gave up their free time to work as volunteers. Later, in 2007, under Li's direction, PCCW volunteers participated in the District Elderly Campaign sponsored by the Oriental Daily News Charitable Fund, the Sun Charitable Fund, and Po Leung Kuk. The campaign's mission was to deliver gift packages to the elderly living in the Lower Ngau Tau Kok Estate.

Beh in d t h e Scen es of an Icon ic Figh t We are sharing here a few interesting facts from MPC Film visual effects supervisor Pier Lefebvre by beforesandafters.com
b&a: With a sequence as large as this, what?s the first thing your team at MPC Film did to prepare for it? Pier Lef ebvr e: Well, the first thing that we did was, we got some previs work that was done by MPC LA. Some of the iconic shots from that previs are still in the movie. But as it evolved, I think that the sequence becomes a bit bigger, because the director realized that it was quite a big playground. We used a simple model of Hong Kong, just to create a basic layout so the previs team could animate with this. And then, later on, we went to Hong Kong, to do a full environment shoot capture. After that, it took quite a while to build the city. Surprisingly, the city was a bigger character than the characters themselves. You start to animate with cubes, but as soon as you refine it, you start to realize that there?s quite a lot of props and cars. Everything that creates world noise, like a real city, takes a long time to do, much longer than a hero asset, like Kong, for example. b&a: Tell me about the Hong Kong scanning and data acquisition. Was that a mix of LIDAR, photogrammetry, photography, everything? Pier Lef ebvr e: Yes, a bit of everything. At MPC, we have developed a system we call Enviro-cam. It?s a camera system that lets us take 360 degree super high-res tiles that you line up to geometry. For the geometry, we bought this from a survey company. Meanwhile, flying a drone in a city is not something that is easy to do, although it was done. Basically, we had a team on the ground that would get access to some buildings. b&a: Did you also shoot plates or live-action for the sequence? Pier Lef ebvr e: Yes, there was some live-action filmed for some iconic shots, say, the big roar at the beginning, where he?s looking up in the sky, that was a drone shot. Because we could place a drone high enough above the city, where it was not a trap for airplanes and traffic. It all has been reworked to some point in CG, because of the monsters, but the iconic shot where Kong has jumped to the building, and he?s throwing the crane?this camera move was done with visual effects supervisor John ?D.J.?Des Jardin and the DOP in a helicopter. b&a: When you?re building a city and buildings that are going to be destroyed, how does MPC approach that? Pier Lef ebvr e: The obvious part is that for the building we destroy, we make sure that the interiors are fully modeled, that there are walls, dividers, there?s all the wiring, hanging rebar. So when you destroy your floors, they just don?t crumble, they kind of collapse and there?s stuff that maintains a piece together. We also add all the furniture that is being sim?d, like rigid bodies, stuff that can just fall down from the building.

Samsung has turned the façade of Central?s Entertainment Building into a grand theatre stage, bringing Hongkongers a large-scale visual art showcase, Theatre on Street, with the brand?s Smart LED curved screen.
Working in partnership with South Korean UX design firm d?strict, the showcase will present a one-minute rendition of Hong Kong Ballet?s acclaimed production Alice (in wonderland) ? featuring a highlighted scene where Alice meets her Wonderland friend the White Rabbit in the garden ? by capturing motions of the physical ballet performance with holographic technology.
The performance of Alice (in wonderland) will be played on the curved screen until the latter part of the year (exact date TBC), after which the brand will introduce more creative content to the 'theatre stage'. Whether you?re watching up close or from afar, the stunning immersive effects of the showcase will give its audience a visually impactful experience as though they are watching the show in a theatre ? especially in the evening! -timeout.com
Penicillin was discovered in 1928 by Scottish scientist Alexander Fleming as a crude extract of P. rubens. Fleming's student Cecil George Paine was the first to successfully use penicillin to treat eye infections (ophthalmia neonatorum) in 1930. The purified compound (penicillin F) was isolated in 1940 by a research team led by Howard Florey and Ernst Boris Chain at the University of Oxford. Fleming first used the purified penicillin to treat streptococcal meningitis in 1942. For the discovery, Fleming shared the 1945 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Florey and Chain. Several semisynthetic penicillins are effective against a broader spectrum of bacteria: these include the antistaphylococcal penicillins, aminopenicillins, and antipseudomonal penicillins. Last March 2021 The Food and Drug Administration has warned of shortages in one drug due to the coronavirus, while penicillin shipments to the U.S. from China have dried up. The FDA said it expects the outbreak of COVID-19 to cause "potential disruptions to supply or shortages of critical medical products in the U.S. Three of the four companies that still produce the active pharmaceutical ingredient for benzathine penicillin G are located in China. These are North China Pharmaceutical Group Semisyntech Co. Ltd, CSPC Pharmaceuticals Group Ltd., and Jiangxi Dongfeng Pharmaceutical Co. Fierce Pharma reported on Monday, that a penicillin plant in Tennessee reopened after slipping into bankruptcy a year ago, officials were sure to highlight the significance of the site's turnaround. Instead of simply pointing out the benefits of a commerce surge that typically comes with the opening of a business venture, attendees Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee and Rep. Diana Harshbarger could wax with some justification about the necessity of domestic manufacturing and ownership. Jackson Healthcare of Georgia is reopening the Bristol plant, which was formerly owned by Neopharma, under the name of antibiotics. The 360,000-square-foot factory will churn out enough Amoxil and Augmentin to stockpile the U.S. for five years, the company said in a release. In all, it'll produce 2 billion tablets and 300 million capsules annually. Last August, Neopharma of the United Arab Emirates declared bankruptcy and shuttered the 43-year-old plant, leaving the U.S. dependent solely on penicillin from China. During the pandemic, Chinese-made products such as ventilators and masks were in short supply in the U.S., highlighting the need for flexible, domestic manufacturing. WHO on the other hand expressed its concerns on antibiotic resistance as it is rising to dangerously high levels in all parts of the world. New resistance mechanisms are emerging and spreading globally, threatening our ability to treat common infectious diseases. A growing list of infections ? such as pneumonia, tuberculosis, blood poisoning, gonorrhea, and foodborne diseases ? are becoming harder, and sometimes impossible, to treat as antibiotics become less effective. Where antibiotics can be bought for human or animal use without a prescription, the emergence and spread of resistance is made worse. Similarly, in countries without standard treatment guidelines, antibiotics are often over-prescribed by health workers and veterinarians and over-used by the public. Without urgent action, we are heading for a post-antibiotic era, in which common infections and minor injuries can once again kill. WHO calls on policymakers to prevent and control the spread of antibiotic resistance to: -Ensure a robust national action plan to tackle antibiotic resistance is in place. -Improve surveillance of antibiotic-resistant infections. -Strengthen policies, programs, and implementation of infection prevention and control measures. -Regulate and promote the appropriate use and disposal of quality medicines. -Make information available on the impact of antibiotic resistance.
