ABOUT THECOVER
The brightly lighted structure on our cover is the vast expansion and re-design of BAFTA's grade II Listed headquarters at 195 Piccadilly. Collaboratively bold and sensitive heritage approach created a new top floor by raising and restoring two massive Victorian roof light structures & decorative plaster considered 'lost' 40+ years from the original 1883 Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, built to 'oppose' the neighbouring Royal Academy. This enhances BAFTA's international identity as the centre of excellence for motion picture arts and games, integrating innovative state-of-the-art technology and cost-in-use efficiency while sensitively balancing education/ learning and public access with members' needs and revenue generation, ensuring the charity's long-term social, environmental, and economic sustainability. It includes doubled capacity, two cinema theatres, a banqueting hall, multipurpose event/ exhibition spaces, UK's first Clore learning space for moving-image arts, four kitchens/ bars, members' area/ restaurant, boardroom, judging/ meeting rooms, offices, and two new roof terraces. Cutting-edge technology is subtly integrated and sustained via BAFTA's collaborative partnering with world-renowned firms Dolby, Christie, QSC, Merck, Noumena, etc. Invitingly transparent reception enhances awareness and accessibility
The classic palette of durable, sustainably sourced materials with varying textures in a highly crafted suite of bespoke details increases refinement on successive floors. Benedetti Architects developed BAFTA's brief focusing on robust flexibility, multiple concurrent uses, and revenue expansion. Inventive combinations of areas, volumes, views, and sequential movement allow theatrical 'reveal' for special events The UK premieres for innovative sustainable materials like liquid-crystal 'smart' glazing on the top floor and airborne carbon/ nitrous oxides' reducing 3D-printed bar-screen. Reduced carbon ±73%from ±155 to ±42 kg/ CO2/ m2 saving ±292 tonnes/ year. Supportive liaison with landlord The Crown Estate, Historic England, Westminster, St. James's Church. The formal public opening was held in May 2022.

"Architecture should be rooted in the past, yet be part of our own time and forward-looking."- Moshe Safdie. We regard architects to be at a level greater than ordinary people, and for a reason. Their works remain forever in our realm and continually inspire us for ages and various purposes One of them is the merging of buildings and the arts
Creativity is one of the best traits of world-renowned architects, and they have used this time and again to achieve their goals This is what famed architect Renato Benedetti did for BAFTA - the British Academy of Film & Television Arts Headquarters It is a world-leading independent arts charity that brings the best work in film, games, and television to public attention and supports the growth of creative talent in the UK and internationally Through its Awards ceremonies and a year-round programme of learning events and initiatives ? which includes workshops, masterclasses, scholarships, lectures, and mentoring schemes in the UK, USA, and Asia ? BAFTA identifies and celebrates excellence, discovers, inspires and nurtures new talent, and enables learning and creative collaboration With a growing online source for films, it is undoubtedly that our future will continue to flourish with the best of filmmaking - otherwise called the "7th Art". Why 7th?
In 1913, an Italian film theoretician named Ricciotto Canudo lived in Paris. He worked side by side with avant-garde writers and artists. He published Montjoie!, a bimonthly magazine promoting Cubism In his manifesto, The Birth of the Sixth Art, published in 1911, Canudo argued that Cinema was a new art:"A superb conciliation of the Rhythms of Space and the Rhythms of Time." A synthesis of the five other arts: Architecture, Sculpture, Painting, Music, and Poetry. He saw Cinema as a 'plastic art in motion and called it "the Sixth Art" Canudo then added Dance as a precursor of the Sixth Art, making Cinema the seventh art.
"We discovered that two of these arts originally emerged from the human brain to allow them to fix everything ephemeral in life; in the fight against the death of the appearances and forms, enriching generations with aesthetic experience."
Ricciotto Canudo's statement following the forming of the Seven Arts
For our 23rd issue, Premier returns to film, the art form that started it all for us.

A new lease with The Crown Estate, taking the charity past its 100th anniversary, prompted them to invest, commissioning Benedetti asarchitects & interior designers to expand and fully reconfigure the building.

Lincoln Cathedral was transformed into a set for Joaquin Phoenix's upcoming Napoleon Bonaparte biopic. The Joker star plays the title role in the film, helmed by director Ridley Scott, which charts the riseto power of thediminutive French emperor.Lincoln Cathedral is a spectacular and globally iconic landmark. William Conqueror commissioned Remiquius de Fécamp, the first Bishop of Lincoln, to build Lincoln Cathedral in the 11th century during the Norman invasion of Britain. Standingtall over the city of Lincoln for hundredsof yearsand appearing in YoungVictoria and TheDa Vinci Code, Lincoln Cathedral isan awe-inspiringand magnificent landmarkrecognized worldwide. Lincoln Cathedral was once the tallest building in the world after the spire was added in 1311, overtaking the Great Pyramid of Giza until 1549, when the spire collapsed in a turbulent storm. Despite the cathedral?s dramatic scale, there are many small and intricate hidden surprises to discover, including the famous Lincoln Imp.
Lincoln Cathedral hasbeen described as?out and out the most preciouspiece of architecture in the British Isles and roughly speaking worth any two other cathedralswe have?by John Ruskin, leading Victorian art critic and writer. Lincoln Cathedral today remains recognised as one of the most precious pieces of architecture in the British Islesand internationally. visitlincoln.com

"Napoleon"
A Masterpiece by Sir Ridley Scott
Sir Ridley Scott's "Napoleon"stunned his audience during November's test screening at "The Grove"in Los Angeles According to Jordan Ruimy's article on World of Reel, they call Scott's epic a "masterpiece"
Judging by one of the participant's reactions and the fact that not much editing needs to be done, you'd think Apple would want to release this one as their leading contender this year. Here's the initial reaction.: "It's 150 minutes.Covers the sweep of Napoleon's life from his promotion around the time of the revolution to the end It's bigger, better, and more psychological than Scott's epics like Kingdom of Heaven and Gladiator Also more political The picture is a masterpiece, or very nearly one It's the culmination of Ridley's life's work as a filmmaker. His staging of battle scenes on a near-cosmic scale is mind-blowing. Joaquin gives a Brando-like performance, taking enormous risks, sometimes verging on the absurd but always taking the audience with him. As a movie about a nationalist in a time of chaos and disintegration who thinks in terms of pure power, it has a lot of parallels to 2022 It's a great movie, and I'll be surprised if there is anything better released in 2023."
But what makes this film much anticipated is the life story behind the legendary Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821), also known as Napoleon I, a French military leader and emperor who conquered much of Europe in the early 19th century Born on the island of Corsica, Napoleon rapidly rose through the ranks of the military during the French Revolution (1789-1799).After seizing political power in France in a 1799 coup d?état, he crowned himself emperor in 1804 The shrewd, ambitious, and skilled military strategist Napoleon successfully waged war against various coalitions of European nations and expanded his empire However, after a disastrous French invasion of Russia in 1812, Napoleon abdicated the throne two years later and was exiled to the island of Elba In 1815, he briefly returned to power in his Hundred Days campaign. After a crushing defeat at the Battle of Waterloo, he abdicated again and was exiled to the remote island of Saint Helena, where he died at 51
The stars of Napoleon are certainly no strangers to working with Scott This upcoming film will focus primarily on Napoleon's rise to fame and his intriguing relationship with Josephine. However, knowing Scott's filmmaking style, he'll probably throw in as much as possible Joaquin Phoenix of Scott's Gladiator will be playing Napoleon, while Napoleon's wife, Empress Joséphine, will be played by Vanessa Kirby, who portrayed Princess Margaret in The Crown and the arms dealer White Widow in Mission: Impossible? Fallout Scott believes this will be a massive milestone in his career, as he called it a "monster" With those two huge stars,he certainly isn't kidding.
Ridley Scott will produce Napoleon, formerly Kitbag, from a script by David Scarpa, and Kevin Walsh will serve alongside Scott as a producer The famous director speaks very highly of Joaquin Phoenix, who is no stranger to playing Emperors, having played one in Gladiator and now another in Napoleon
Described by film producer Michael Deeley as "the very best eye in the business,"director Ridley Scott was born on November 30, 1937, in South Shields, Tyne, and Wear His father was an officer in the Royal Engineers Scott wanted to join the Royal Army (his elder brother Frank had already joined the Merchant Navy).Still, his father encouraged him to develop his artistic talents instead, so he went to West Hartlepool College of Art, and then London's Royal College of Art, where he helped found the film department The family followed him as his career posted him throughout the United Kingdom and Europe before they eventually returned to Teesside.
In 1962, he joined the BBC as a trainee set designer working on several high-profile series. He attended a trainee director's course while there, and his first directing job was on an episode of the popular BBC police series Z Cars (1962), Z Cars: Error of Judgement (1965) More TV work followed until, frustrated by the poor financial rewards at the BBC; he went into advertising With his younger brother, Tony Scott, he formed the advertising production company RSA (Ridley Scott Associates) in 1967 and spent the next ten years making some of the best-known and best-loved TV adverts ever shown on British television, including a series of ads for Hovis bread set to the music of Dvorak's New World Symphony which is still talked about today ("'e were a great baker were our dad.")
He began working with producer David Puttnam in the 1970s, developing ideas for feature films.Their first joint endeavor, The Duellists (1977), won the Jury Prize for Best First Work at Cannes in 1977 and was nominated for the Palm d'Or, more than successfully launching Scott's feature film career The success of Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977) inspired Scott's interest in making science fiction, and he accepted the offer to direct Dan O'Bannon's low-budget science fiction horror movie Alien (1979), a critical and commercial success that firmly established his worldwide reputation as a movie director
Blade Runner (1982) followed in 1982 to, at best, a lukewarm reception from the public and critics, but in the years that followed, its reputation grew - and Scott's with it - as one of the most influential sci-fi movies ever made. Scott's next major project was back in the advertising world, where he created another of the most talked-about advertising spots in broadcast history when his "1984"-inspired ad for the new Apple Macintosh computer was aired during the Super Bowl on January 22, 1984 Scott's movie career has seen a few flops (notably Legend (1985) and 1492: Conquest of Paradise (1992)), but with successes like Thelma & Louise (1991), Gladiator (2000), and Black Hawk Down (2001) to offset them, his reputation remains solidly intact
Ridley Scott was awarded Knight Bachelor of the Order of the British Empire at the 2003 Queen's New Year Honours for his "substantial contribution to the British film industry" On July 3, 2015, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Royal College of Art in a ceremony at the Royal Albert Hall in London. He was awarded the BAFTA Fellowship in 2018 BAFTA described him as "a visionary director, one of the great British filmmakers whose work has made an indelible mark on cinema history Forty years since his directorial debut, his films continue to cross the boundaries of style and genre, engaging audiences and inspiring the next generation of film talent"- Pedro Borges
?Napoleon is a man I've always been fascinated by. He came out of nowhere to rule everything? but all the while he was waging a romantic war with his adulterous wife Joséphine. He conquered the world to try to win her love, and when he couldn't, he conquered it to destroy her, and destroyed himself in the process.?

Plastic is Forever...so it's time to get clever about managing it!
Acampaign raising awareness of the work carried out by the Basel Convention to foster the environmentally sound management of plastic waste.
In the video, the Brosnans remark on plastic's an almost infinite life cycle, which typically takes hundreds of years to disintegrate, breaking down into microparticles detected in the air, water, and even in human placentas
"Our campaign slogan was born out of the need to show that not all is bleak when it comes to global environmental governance," said Rolph Payet, Executive Secretary of the BRS Secretariat. "We want to raise awareness of the work put in place by the international community and the tangible results we are achieving while trying to tackle the plastic waste crisis "
The BRS Conventions are three multilateral environmental agreements administered by the United Nations Environment Programme, focused on protecting people and the environment from hazardous chemicals and wastes The Basel Convention is the only international treaty that legally binds 189 countries in implementing strict controls for the transboundary movement of plastics. The Basel Convention Plastic Waste Amendments are a stepping stone towards forging an international legally binding agreement to end plastic pollution.
Legendary Hollywood actor Pierce Brosnan and Paris Brosnan, a filmmaker and environmental activist, have joined forces with the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm Conventions (BRS Conventions) to draw attention to the need for plastic waste management Their PSA video is part of the Basel Convention "Plastic is Forever?so it's time to get clever about managing it!" campaign.?We wholeheartedly welcome the gracious contributions of Pierce Brosnan and Paris Brosnan to inform the general public about the constantly evolving state of the global plastic waste crisis and the tools we have at our disposal to address it,? noted Payet. ?Hopefully, their millions of fans ? including decision-makers ? will be inspired by their message and engage in the minimization and management of plastic waste.?
The release of the Plastic is Forever promotional videos coincided with the conclusion of the 2022 BRS Conferences of Parties (BRS COPs) The campaign includes a photo competition, a hackathon, a social media challenge (plastic in the sea and plastic on mountains), and an illuminations show in Geneva?s Palais des Nations during the BRS COPs.

Photo Courtesyof Pierce BrosnanOfficial FBPageAnnual global plastic production has increased from two to 380 million tonnes since 1950 and is projected to double by 2035.
Today, it is estimated that one million plastic bottles are purchased every minute, and 5 trillion plastic bags are used every year It takes more than one millennium for a plastic bag to decompose, slowly breaking down into smaller and smaller microplastics that are swept away by air and water into the highest peaks and the deepest trenches of our planet. We breathe up to 7,000 microplastics each day. The average person is estimated to ingest five grams of microplastics every week ? the equivalent of a credit card We eat and drink them 83% of tap water and 90% of bottled water has been found to contain plastic particles We are even born with them, as revealed in a 2020 study that detected microplastics in human placentas.
However, without plastic, we wouldn't be as safe: IV bags, syringes, surgical masks, prosthetic limbs, motorcycle helmets, and so many other life-saving objects are made of plastic materials We would waste more food: plastic packaging prolongs the life of meat and vegetables We would spend more money: plastic is affordable, versatile, and reusable.
Plastic is an enduring human invention with numerous applications in modern society. Plastic waste must be managed responsibly to prevent adverse effects on human health and the environment The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has rang the alarm on the triple planetary emergency that we are currently faced with: a climate crisis, a nature crisis, and a pollution crisis brsmeas.org
DID YOU KNOW?
MAJOR CONTRIBUTOR to Plastic Pollution is Food and Beverages ?
31.14%
The most common single-use plastics we encounter daily are food and beverage packaging. These single-use plastics are the most hazardous forms of plastics because many cannot be reused or recycled due to the lack of available technology and recovery markets It is hard to deny: plastic runs rampant among our everyday choices in food and beverages because they reduce food waste and increase accessibility. However, every chocolate bar wrapper, snack bag, and fast food container adds to one big plastic dilemma.
Bulk purchases of snacks and food in reusable containers and reduced packaging are the best avenues to combat these products.

In a 2007 interview with Time magazine, Avatar writer and director James Cameron was asked about the meaning of the term Avatar. He replied, "It's an incarnation of one of the Hindu gods taking a flesh form. In this film, that means that the future human technology can inject a human's intelligence into a remotely located body, a biological body." Cameron also cited the Japanese cyberpunk manga and anime Ghost in the Shell in terms of how humans can remotely control, and transfer their personalities into, alien bodies Jake's Avatar and Neytiri One of the inspirations for the look of the Na'vi came from a dream that Cameron's mother had told him about. The look of the Na'vi ? the humanoids indigenous to Pandora ? was inspired by a dream Cameron's mother had long before he started work on Avatar. In her dream, she saw a blue-skinned woman 12 feet (4 m) tall, which he thought was "kind of a cool image." Also, he said, "I just like blue. It's a good color plus, there's a connection to the Hindu deities, which I like conceptually " He included similar creatures in his first screenplay (written in 1976 or 1977), which featured a planet with a native population of "gorgeous" tall blue aliens The Na'vi were based on them
This December, after more than a decade, James Cameron's Avatar is back with the sequel called Avatar, The Way of the Water. We will soon discover if the latest awe-inspiring return will overtake the all-time highest-grossing film Avatar. The director has been known to have a good connection with nature and a great interest in tech development And so far, the holiday film watch has received positive reviews
Over a decade after the events of the first film, Jake Sully lives as chief of the Omaticaya and raises a family with Neytiri, which includes his biological sons Neteyam and Lo'ak and his daughter Tuk, his adopted daughter Kiri (born from Grace Augustine's inert Na'vi avatar), and a human boy named Spider, the son of Colonel Miles Quaritch, who was born on Pandora and was unable to be transported to Earth in cryostasis
To the Na'vi's dismay, humans return to Pandora with plans for colonization because the Earth?s ecosystems are dying. Among the new arrivals is Quaritch, cloned into a Na'vi body and fitted with his template's memories from before his death. Construction begins on a new main operating base and settlement called Bridgehead City. Jake leads a guerilla campaign against the RDA supply lines Quaritch initiates a search mission to kill Jake, and his squad captures Jake's children Jake and Neytiri arrive and free most of them, but Spider is taken by Quaritch, who recognizes him as his son He decides to spend time with him in order to draw Spider on his side, and in turn Spider teaches Quaritch about Na'vi culture. Aware of the danger posed by Spider's knowledge of his whereabouts, Jake and his family banish themselves from the Omaticaya and retreat to the Metkayina reef people clan at Pandora's eastern seaboard, where they are given shelter, even though some tribesmen deride Jake and his children for their genetic human heritage. The family learns the ways of the reef people, Kiri develops a spiritual bond with the sea and its creatures, and Lo'ak befriends Tsireya, the daughter of clan chief Tonowari and his wife Ronal We would love to continue but we will let you watch first and know what happens next
"The coral reefs will be a thing that exists only in films in 50 to 75 years, in most placesaround the planet. That?snot okay. When I wasa kid, I aspired to become a diver, so I could go and see this wonder and this beauty myself. And thenI spent decadesexploring and enjoying that world.Mykids and my grandchildren won? t be able to do that. And so, it?s kind of a cri de c? ur, if you want to put it that way: to remember, to celebrate and fall in love withagain, and therefore rememberto protect that whichwe?re losing."
"The most obvious connection between The Way of Water?s new habitats and what we have here on Earth are the tropical coral reefs and the tropical atoll formations, especially in the Central and Western Pacific: where you have these ranges of ancient volcanoes that are eroded down and form these atoll island chains. I?d spent a lot of time diving out in the Pacific amongst these atolls and at coral reefs all over the world. All of our species of coral and large, soft, invertebrate animals, we put equivalents to those in our reef ecosystem in The Way of Water. It?s really a celebration of our reefs and atoll formations. It?s also a celebration of the Polynesian culture that spread in this vast diaspora through all these Pacific Islands. It?s a celebration of our ability as these highly adaptive creatures to go into different environments Ultimately, everything you see with the Na?vi is really the best of us, written large and blue and through the lens of science fiction. In a way, they?re aspirational characters. I live in an urban environment, I work 9-to-5, I have all these stressors, I have to pay my rent, my taxes? blah, blah, blah. I want to live like them. But how would one live like them?
Well, you?d have to have this deep, spiritual respect for the harmony and balance of nature. We don? t have that anymore, so we can? t get there from where we are. We have to learn it again. We have to learn what humanity once knew but has forgotten or suppressed"- J Cameron/ NatGeo
"The reason that I went down the path of making a series of films in the same universe is because I thought that what I needed to say artistically? to communicate with people? I could do within that framework. Obviously, shifting from the rainforest, which wasthe focusof the first film, to the ocean, [there] is, between the lines, a plea for the protection and conservation and celebration of our oceans. Hopefullywe can turn back from a path that isputtingthe oceansunder stress. I don? t even like to use the term ?stress?:It?sused a lot in conservation, [but] if you consider fourth-stage cancer ?stress,?yeah, it?s?stress.?- JamesCameron, NatGeo

The Mercedes?Benz VISION AVTR is the result of an extraordinary global collaboration between AVATAR, one of the most innovative film brands in the entertainment industry, and Mercedes?Benz, the world?s eighth most valuable brand (according to Interbrand Ranking 2022). The name of the ground-breaking concept vehicle stands for ADVANCED VEHICLE TRANSFORMATION The biometric connection in the autonomous concept vehicle enables a completely new interaction between man, machine and nature. NEOM?s Nature Reserve wildlife release initiative
NEOM marks first phase of rewilding efforts with the arrival of the first animals to its Nature Reserve
Initiative forms part of NEOM?s broader commitment to protecting 95% of its natural environment
Animals were provided by the National Center for Wildlife (NCW) and relocated with support from OXAGON, NEOM?s logistics hub
NEOM, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, December 15, 2022: NEOM, the sustainable region taking shape in northwest Saudi Arabia, has welcomed a special delivery of four species of native wildlife to its Nature Reserve. The initiative, launched in collaboration with NCW, marks the first phase of NEOM?s rewilding program, which represents an innovative and highly ambitious approach for conserving wildlife and showcasing the unique biodiversity of the region
The animals, which include oryx, ibex, sand gazelles and mountain gazelles, arrived from NCW in Riyadh in late October, with NEOM engaging relocation support from the supply chain and logistics team based at its OXAGON hub to ensure their safety throughout the journey. After spending time in specially designed pens to acclimatize to their new environment, NEOM?s newest inhabitants were released into the larger reserve This is a key first step in NEOM?s plans to make globally significant contributions to conservation.
Covering a vast area of 25,000 km 2 and helping to deliver the nature conservation and environmental components of Vision 2030 and the Saudi Green Initiative (SGI), one of which is NCW wildlife breeding initiative, NEOM?s Nature Reserve aims to host one of the largest rewilding programs in the world Residents, tourists, and wildlife will all have an opportunity to benefit from NEOM?s regreening and rewilding model, with the knowledge used to enhance other areas across the region.

Dr Paul Marshall, Head of the NEOM Nature Reserve, said: ?The wildlife release was a historical moment: this is the first time that oryx have walked the sands of NEOM for nearly 100 years. It was also a demonstration of our commitment to the protection of nature, which is at the core of NEOM?s vision. We aim to be at the forefront of redefining nature conservation and NEOM?s Nature Reserve provides an unrivaled landscape to support this aspiration Through the establishment of a world-class protected area, we will be able to preserve 95% of NEOM?s land and sea for nature, and implement a science-based program of protection, restoration, and rewilding ?
Dr Mohammed Qurban, CEO of the NCW, said: ?Our partnership with NEOM aligns with the objectives of the national program for reintroducing endangered local species back into their natural ecosystems, one of the SGI initiatives. By supporting the Kingdom?s strategy for environmental conservation, this initiative contributes to sustainable development, promoting the growth of local ecosystems and ensuring their biodiversity It also highlights NCW?s strong collaboration efforts with prominent local entities that share our goals ?
The arrival of the animals marks the first stage of NEOM?s wider nature restoration efforts, including a major regreening initiative which positions NEOM as a leading player seeking to restore wildlife abundance, reintroduce rare or locally near-extinct wildlife species, and ensure protection of wildlife from illegal hunting
NEOM?s Nature Reserve aims to provide a landscape of opportunity to implement innovations that tackle planetary problems, such as biodiversity loss and species extinctions Through pioneering research partnerships, solution scaling and technology acceleration, NEOM will be at the forefront of accelerated efforts to protect our natural world
