IN THIS ISSUE

Just as we thought things are about to get better , an invasion happens. Some may think that the Russia and Ukraine conflict affects only those countries in Europe and America alone, they are obviously mistaken. It is everyone's worst nightmare. We will not dwell on the subject of why because we are not experts on the matter. For us, we only know the basics of life. - We are all born to give life, not to take . Though we understand the science of cause and effect we just hope that the dying stops because it will just breed hurt people who will eventually hurt more people in the process and who knows when this cycle will end? This issue is dedicated to all those who lost their lives and are still suffering due to the ongoing invasion, To our fellow humans in both Ukraine and Russia, we thank you for keeping us on your radar and for contributing to our content; not to forget the other global citizens who make up this entire issue. We also highlight the latest tech innovations as the current cyberwar continues to wreak havoc on our daily lives. It is also worth mentioning that the first-ever Fashion Week on Metaverse will happen this March while the rest will be indulging in everything Ukrainian. Let's keep our hopes up and may an understanding of the many facets of human nature be reached soon. May our leaders be guided with foresight and grace and win peace in the most humane way possible. Sapere Aude.

ABOUT THE COVER

These last few days, there have been protests against Russia's invasion of Ukraine all around the world. This photo was taken during a protest in Valencia, Spain. The crowd was dense, the anger and disbelief were heavy and palpable. In the midst of it, the sadness and sorrow on a young girl's face caught my eye and broke my heart a little bit more. This invasion is not okay. Stop War. Stop Putin. February 2022, Valencia To support my work, follow me on Instagram @entropy_photo Julie Meunier, Communications Manager from Valencia,Spain Our cover sums up the narrative of every Ukrainian or perhaps even Russians and maybe any human for that matter. Death has been in our front door for more than two years and for others death walked in. Covid-19 was an eye-opener. It was also the great equalizer. In some parts of the world it continues to make itself felt and deaths amass. Are we going to let history repeat itself? The world is old and we have evolved. Intelligent beings we have become and yet so helpless. The girl on the cover represents not only one race but a representation of all of us. We ask you to take a closer look. What do you see? How do you feel? Try to reach deep within your heart.

I have been photographing for a couple of years now, in a mult it ude of places, and I have just st arted sharing t hem on my ow n Inst agram page (@ent ropy_photo). The World We Know Last February 25, 2022, Olesia Ostrovska-Liuta the director of the Mystetskyi Arsenal National Art and Culture Museum Complex in Kyiv, Ukraine wrote an article on how the art world can help protect the artworks of artists important to shared European history and the history of Ukraine. We have shared the important parts of the article on the next page. However, on Sunday, February 27th the Ivankiv Historical and Local History Museum in the town of Ivankiv, north of Kyiv which was a house of the collection of internationally known näive art artist Maria Prymachenko has been burned by the Russian troops which invaded Ukraine on February 24th. For inquiries, you may get in touch with UNESCO or (Mystetskyi Arsenal/Facebook).

Olesia Ostrovska-Liuta's Call for Peace and Freedom We ask those of you in the cultural sphere and beyond for your support. Every one of you can help in the following ways: 1. Remind yourselves and remind others that this war is a war against the whole civilized world, free thought, democratic values, and truth. Include information about the ongoing Russian war in Ukraine into your public talks? mention this invasion at art and literature events that you attend or participate in. Bring this up at your exhibitions. 2. Write and share joint public statements as cultural and civil organizations, institutions, and industry associations? we need writers, publishers, booksellers, artists, and museums to use their platforms. We ask you to publicly share your successful stories of cultural cooperation with Ukraine. In recent years, our country achieved essential progress in the arts and literature fields, and we partook in important cultural diplomacy and the promotion of European cultural values. Support peace and drive the attention of your fellow citizens, media, and politicians by using the facades of your offices and other available spaces for artistic actions showing the colors of the Ukrainian flag. 5. Highlight contemporary Ukrainian art and discuss the books of modern writers who wrote and will continue to write about the war in Ukraine, which has been going on for eight years in Europe. As a leading art institution, we are eager to provide you with all the information we have, so please get in touch with us. The mission of our museum, the Mystetskyi Arsenal, is to facilitate interactions between people, communities, and institutions that empower individuals and free society. We Ukrainians are a peace-loving nation, but we will defend our land, our families, and our right to freedom and independence. We will also defend Europe and our European choice. The armed forces of Ukraine are ready for full combat, and they will resist Russian invaders as best as possible! With regard to civilians, we are trying to remain calm and do everything to help each other prepare for this warfare. Despite the invasion that is currently in full force, we believe above all that our armed forces, along with the support of everyone else involved, will succeed. Ukraine is in Danger Alexander Zvir, a photographer in Lviv shared his masterpieces, his thoughts on his current state, and that of his motherland.

After t he invasion, more precisely after t he shelling, bombing and ent ry of Put in's t roops into Ukraine. How w as my life? We all know t hat t he offensive on Ukraine began at daw n. This morning brought air alarm and t he new s t hat t he w ar had begun. My family and I live in Lviv, t his cit y is about 80 kilometers from t he border w it h Poland, w hich is a member of t he European Union and NATO. To date, t he cit y has not come under fire, and people come here from t he occupied and dest royed territories. Some come and st ay, ot hers go to Western Europe in search of securit y and shelter. Because t here is relat ive calm in my cit y, t he biggest change in life is t he psychological st ate, t he st ate of anxiet y and anxiet y. W hen you have t hree young children and one of t hem is a son w it h aut ism, you w ant to be sure t hat everyt hing w ill be fine w it h t hem, but you underst and t hat t his is a w ar, and it does not guarantee life and securit y. Therefore, for me personally, as for many people in t he surviving cit ies, life remains in about t he same format , w it h differences in percept ions of today and changing values, performing a few ot her t asks related to global issues. My life t urned out so t hat I had to make my choice, w hich w as not easy. We decided to st ay at home, despite t he fact t hat t here is a t hreat to all of us, and especially to children. We are confident t hat Ukraine w ill be needed to help ot hers, to help it s St ate and to do everyt hing we can w hen t he t ime comes.

On t he second day of t he w ar, I went to enlist in t he volunteer det achment s, because I realized t hat everyt hing w as very serious and t ragic. Know ing how Russia seized t he territories of Georgia, Moldova, Chechnya and ot her lands. Know ing how many civilians perished from t he "Russian Peace". Know ing t he history of t he Soviet Union, w hich seized foreign territories under t he false slogans of "liberat ion of fraternal peoples" from capit alism. I well understood t hat brute force cannot be stopped by prayers or negot iat ions. How can you agree w it h t he one w ho came to kill you ??? Therefore, I w anted to go to w ar! But at t he moment , t here is a large flow of t hose w ishing to defend t heir land, t aking primarily t hose w it h combat experience and t he rest remaining in reserve. Therefore, in order to be useful to my count ry, I do w hat I can to help in t his unequal bat t le w it h evil. At t he moment , my weapon is photography and words! On all t he net works available to me on t he Internet , I publish photos t aken since t he Revolut ion of Dignit y, w hich took place in 2014, w hen Put in's protege, t he criminal Yanukovych, gave orders to shoot protesters. I t ake photos of volunteers helping t he army to document our lives t hese days.

W hat steps have you taken to address the problems in your area? I can't say that I had any difficulties. It would not be fair to make a sacrifice. Now, we have a lot of people who have been left homeless, some have died under fire or left under a dilapidated house. Some have no water or food, and no living conditions. So I will end this question, because it is enough to look at the people who really suffered, and then you understand how lucky you are, lucky to be alive and have the opportunity to continue living. W hat difficulties have you experienced? There is no unequivocal answer to this question. If we take the option that Putin is occupying my country, which we would not like, we assume that such an option is also possible. Then, of course, I would not want to live in the tyranny and poverty that Russia brings with it. I think you need to see which state will give you asylum.

... it is enough to look at t he people w ho really suffered, and t hen you underst and how lucky you are, lucky to be alive and have t he opport unit y to cont inue living.

Ukraine has been t hrough a lot of challenges ever since we can remember, can you see yourself st aying t here w it h your family?

Of course, I see myself w it h my family in Ukraine, and act ually after so many t rials. After all, we have fought for so long for our ident it y, freedom and independence. For me, t he United St ates and Israel are an example, and t he values t hat Ukraine is fight ing for were also import ant to t hem. The independence and st rengt h of t hese st ates rest on t he pillar of t he w ill of t he people and t he law s of t he st ate, w hich is unaccept able for Russia. In one speech, Put in said t hat Ukraine is not a st ate, and Ukrainians and Russians are brot hers. The paradox is t hat Put in makes brot hers by force, and he simply dest roys t he disobedient . I believe t hat it is my dut y to be in Ukraine, and t hen t ime and history w ill put everyt hing in it s place. How did you get by during t he onset of t he pandemic? I w ill answer briefly about t he pandemic, t here were different st ages, and from w hat I know, everyt hing w as about t he same as in ot her count ries. People were vaccinated, w hich gave a posit ive result , alt hough Coronavirus usually took many lives.

W hat support do you need from ot her count ries t hat are w illing to help? The primary support is t he underst anding of t he government s of ot her count ries of t he real sit uat ion in Ukraine. Since we are not members of NATO and t he European Union, we are forced to resist Russia's aggression on our ow n, we are forced to rely only on our ow n st rengt h. The West provides us w it h weapons of defense and humanit arian aid, Boris Johnson defends Ukraine's right to freedom and helps in various w ays. For me, he is a Hero and I w ill not be mist aken in saying t hat he is a friend of Ukraine and a defender of democracy in t he world. We also need help to protect t he count ry from airst rikes, we need to close t he Ukrainian sky. Our sky, t his is one of t he vulnerabilit ies, I w ill not make a reservat ion if I w rite t hat Put in is t he number one killer in t he world, he is guilt y of shelling and bombing orphanages, hospit als and homes. All t his is recorded and broadcast on television and t he Internet . This is a request , t his is a plea Protect our sky, because tomorrow you may have to defend yours !!!

The most import ant t hing is w ho report s it and how. Put in has invested heavily in t he informat ion w ar t hat has been going on t hroughout his reign. His media is const ant ly spreading misinformat ion and lies, just ifying his act ions in every possible w ay. Unfort unately, he finds his audience, w hich defends t he interest s of t he aggressor. If you look at history, t his is a copy of Goebbels' propaganda. It is good t hat t he West came to it s senses and forbade t he cont inuat ion of t his propaganda machine. Everyt hing else becomes clear w hen w atching videos from t he scene of event s and w ar crimes, and everyone must ret hink w hat fascism is in today's 21st-cent ury world, in w hich it would seem impossible. And everyone should know t he t rut h about t hese crimes, because if you close your eyes today to w hat is happening in Ukraine, it is possible t hat tomorrow you w ill w ake up in t he morning, and on t he doorstep of your house w ill be an armed Russian occupier w it h t he words, "I came to protect you ."! So look at Ukraine today and if you w ant a peaceful sky above you, make your choice today!

Babyn Yar is a wooded area with a deep ravine located in the west of Kyiv, Ukraine, that used to mark the edge of the city. It is the site of one of the worst massacres of the Nazi regime, when on September 29th and 30th, 1941 approximately 35?000 Jews were shot and killed by German troops. Over the following weeks and months an additional 100?000 Jews, Soviet prisoners of war, communists, Ukrainian nationalists, Roma and patients of a nearby psychiatric hospital were murdered within the grounds of Babyn Yar. A ?holocaust by bullets?, it represents one of the worst atrocities of our modern era.

The territory of Babyn Yar is marked by gorges and a strong topography. It was precisely this topography that the SS officers utilized, by killing many tens of thousands of people without having to excavate mass graves. Through the mass killing, a new topography was created. A physical topography of death and murder. The very soil of Babyn Yar can therefore be considered as sacred. Over the following years, and during the Soviet era, the topography of Babyn Yar was repeatedly altered. Parts of the ravine still exist, but other parts have been flattened. Today the area is used as a city park. Only a few memorials within Babyn Yar speak of the almost unimaginable horror that took place on this ground. The Babyn Yar Holocaust Memorial Foundation has started a process of implementing a series of smaller and larger interventions over the coming years to commemorate the history of the site in all its complexity. The Babyn Yar Synagogue represents the first building within this initiative. It is meant as a synagogue that will commemorate the history, but also reestablish a living Jewish presence on the site today.

The Design The synagogue as a building t ypology in it s purest essence, w as considered as a book. During t he religious service, a congregat ion comes toget her, to collect ively read a book - t he Siddur (t he book of prayers) or t he Bible. The shared reading of t he book opens a world of w isdom, morals, history and anecdotes to t he congregat ion. It is t his not ion t hat informs t he design of t he new Babyn Yar Synagogue.

The architect s combined t his idea w it h a different t ype of book, somet hing t hat is quite playful: t he pop-up book. The pop-up book is a magic book, t hat unfolds into t hree dimensions. From a flat object of a book, w hen we open it , new worlds unfold, t hat we could not imagine before. In a sense, t he pop-up book can act as a met aphor for t he Synagogue. Furt hermore, t he pop-up book t riggers fascinat ion: no-one can resist t he tempt at ion of opening up t hese books of wonders, and explore t hem. This qualit y of a ?cabinet of wonder? and a new universe t hat unfolds, is w hat I w anted to create in t he locat ion of Babyn Yar.

The site is located w it hin t he t rees, just behind an exist ing small monument , a Menorah t hat dates back to t he early 1990s. The building sit s on a wooden plat form t hat hovers slight ly above t he ground. Great care w as t aken to prevent a deep foundat ion, so as not to dist urb t he exist ing soil. The building it self is a wooden const ruct ion w it h an inner steel framework. W hen closed, t he building is a flat , vert ical of approximately 8 Meter in w idt h and 11 Meter in height . The building is manually opened, and t hen unfolds into t he t hree-dimensional space of t he synagogue. The opening process is a collect ive rit ual, performed by t he congregat ion, as a manual and physical t ask, intent ionally w it hout t he support of a motor. The unfolding space, w it h t he Bimah (reading plat form for t he Torah) in t he center, w it h it s benches and balcony, is t his new universe t hat has opened by reading t he book toget her. The wood is sourced from old oak wood, coming from all part s of Ukraine. This ensures t hat t he building has a unifying qualit y, dow n to t he very material used in it s const ruct ion. The wood is more t han a hundred years old. It w ill t herefore connect t he t ime of before t he massacre, to t he contemporary era.

The w alls are decorated w it h prayers and blessings, celebrat ing a reaw akening. The main prayers of t he Jew ish lit urgy, such as t he Shma?Israel, or t he Kaddish are w rit ten on t he w alls. But maybe more surprisingly, ot her blessings such as t he blessing for t urning a night mare into a good dream, are displayed on t he main w all, above t he ?Aron ha-Kodesh? , t he place w here t he bible scrolls are kept . This blessing w as w rit ten on t he w alls of t he historic Synagogue of Gwozdziec of Western Ukraine dat ing back to t he 17t h cent ury, and it is a perfect t heme for t he new Synagogue.

The ceiling is painted w it h a myriad of symbols and iconography also referencing t he interior of t he historic synagogues of Ukraine from t he 17t h and 18t h cent ury t hat have since been dest royed. It celebrates a colourful universe t hat w ill become visible above t he heads of t he visitors of t he Synagogue. But t hese symbols have an addit ional meaning: Toget her, t hey recreate t he st ar constellat ion t hat w as visible over Kyiv on t he night of September 29t h, 1941. For t he visitors, looking up into t he ceiling of t he new synagogue w ill create a subt le link to t he night t hat t he massacre st arted.

Ukraine: Urgent Humanit arian Race Against Time

An ja Wolz, Doct or s Wit h ou t Bor der s Em er gen cy Coor din at or cu r r en t ly based in Lviv, Uk r ain e, explain s t h e u r gen cy of t h is st age of t h e h u m an it ar ian r espon se.

Here in Lviv, I am getting multiple calls from hospitals with urgent appeals for assistance. We are embarking on an urgent race against time to get the right medical supplies to the right places before aid can no longer reach militarily encircled towns and cities. Destruction, aerial bombing, heavy artillery fire, tank battles, encircled towns, the beginnings of urban warfare, people sheltering in bunkers and basements running out of food, water and electricity ? this is what is happening. And it is getting worse. The brutality, intensity and speed of this war is unlike anything we have seen for a long time. The humanitarian medical response needs to be at scale and at speed. In Doctors Without Borders, we?ve worked day and night to switch from a regular long-term medical program in Ukraine to responding to a full war situation. Our teams were distributing the limited medical and other supplies we already had in-country from the first day of the war, but we knew this was very little in comparison with hospitals?and peoples?needs.

Fir st su pplies by t r ain t o Kyiv Last weekend, on Saturday 05 March, our first three trucks of emergency medical supplies ? 120m3 - got into Ukraine. We immediately sent a third of it, mostly surgical and trauma material and drugs, to Kyiv by train, loading until midnight. This was delivered in the afternoon of Sunday 06 March to the Ministry of Health in Kyiv to be distributed to hospitals treating war wounded in the capital city and to hospitals in war zones further east. As hospitals in the east become overwhelmed with increasing numbers of war trauma patients, their supplies are dwindling. And we don?t know how long it will be before Kyiv may be cut off. Our primary efforts for now are on getting the right medical supplies to where they are needed, in large volumes, and as rapidly as humanly possible. More emergency medical supplies have arrived in the past days, and further shipments will follow in the days and weeks to come.

M u lt iple over lappin g n eeds So far, the focus has been on surgical, trauma, ER (Emergency Room) and ICU (Intensive Care Unit) equipment and drugs. But a broader picture of other key medical items is starting to emerge: insulin for diabetes patients, medicines for patients with other chronic diseases such as asthma, hypertension or HIV. Some of these will need to be transported with the added complexity of a cold chain. Getting supplies to where they are needed in Ukraine will be a challenge. The trains are still mostly running, and this is a good option because of the volume they can take, but we are looking at multiple ways of moving medical supplies around the country safely. We fear that it will get harder, perhaps rapidly so, to move medical supplies and medical staff to where they are needed, hence the real urgency to move fast on this now.

Th e r ace again st t h e cold

The other race is against the cold. Where I am now, in Lviv town, it is minus seven degrees Celsius at night, and there are hundreds of thousands of people who have gathered here or are making their way onwards from Lviv to the Polish, Slovakian

or

Hungarian

borders.

Temperatures this cold can kill. So we are rapidly bringing in 160m3 of materials to help ? more than 2,000 sleeping bags, more than 3,500 thermal fleece blankets, thousands of sets of thermal underwear, fleece pullovers, hats, rain jackets and other clothes, and more than 500 tents, as well as hygiene items such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap and towels. We intend to pass these on to local civil society organisations who will distribute them to people who have fled to Lviv or are queuing at Ukraine?s borders. Our first surgical team has arrived in Lviv, but decisions to move closer to areas of active fighting to do hands-on medical work cannot be taken lightly. We are weighing up several locations and options and will be taking decisions over the coming days. The race to get medical aid where it is needed has started. We are scaling up fast ? and these are the much-needed first steps as we build our concrete medical response.

This dish of cod mousse is inspired by a traditional Ukrainian dish of baked cod fish with sour cream, which can be cumbersome to eat due to the many small bones in the fish. However, Artyuk has presented it like a snack with globs of home-made cod mousse, dill mayonnaise and pike caviar on a crispy piece of dehydrated fish skin. Cod fish mousse (Credit: Kenneth Goh)

There are two menus at Kanapa, which amusingly means canape as well as big armchair in Ukrainian, and both can be found in the restaurant. One menu focuses on classic dishes such as varenyky (boiled dumplings that can be stuffed with everything from mashed potatoes, rabbit to cherries), chicken kiev and banosh. The other menu gives him more room to experiment with culinary techniques. He tinkers around with liquid nitrogen, spherification, sous vide and fermentation techniques in his dishes. He explains: ?Ukrainian cuisine does not have a lot of spices - just salt, pepper, garlic ? so trying out new techniques opens up more possibilities to change the flavours and textures of our dishes.? Love Uk r ain e by Volodym yr Sosiu r a (1944) Love your Ukraine, love as you would the sun, The wind, the grasses and the streams together? Love her in happy hours, when joys are won, And love her in her time of stormy weather. Love her in happy dreams and when awake, Ukraine in spring?s white cherry-blossom veil. Her beauty is eternal for your sake ; Her speech is tender with the nightingale. As in a garden of fraternal races, She shines above the ages. Love Ukraine With all your heart, and with exultant faces Let all your deeds her majesty maintain. For us she rides alone on history?s billows, In the sweet charm of space she rules apart, For she is in the stars, is in the willows, And in each pulse-beat of her people?s heart, In flowers and tiny birds, and lights that shine, In every epic and in every song, In a child?s smile, in maidens?eyes divine, And in the purple flags above the throng? Youth ! For her sake give your approving laughter, Your tears, and all you are until you die? For other races you?ll not love hereafter Unless you love Ukraine and hold her high. Young woman ! As you would her sky of blue, Love her each moment that your days remain. Your sweetheart will not keep his love for you, Unless he knows you also love Ukraine. Love her in love, in labour, and in fight, As if she were a song at heaven?s portal? Love her with all your heart and all your might, And with her glory we shall be immortal.
