Let’s talk Flight bike. How was your first year on the Bubba Harris Flight bikes; featuring U-6 tubing? BUBBA: The geometry of the Flight bikes is slightly different. I think the biggest difference is the tubing. Way better. This U-6 tubing is lighter and feels a lot stiffer, which makes it a quicker bike. A LOT quicker! And how about Redline’s ad campaign about Flight bikes manualing 50% better... BUBBA: Oh, it manuals so good! Everyone who rides my bike at Supercamp is amazed at how well it manuals. Everyone who rides this bike loves it. Everything about this bike is awesome. You are currently leading ABA Pro Points and will no doubt be in the hunt for the most sought-after Pro title in all of BMX. BUBBA: It feels good. That’s been my goal since I turned pro. Once I got on top of the points, I’ve wanted to stay there. Don’t want to give it up to anybody else. What’s the difference between when you turned pro at 16 to now; leading Pro points at 18? BUBBA: I’d say the confidence factor. Of course, my size is helping out a lot. On the gate I’m not as nervous. I’ve got two years now of experience. I know when to make passes at when not to. I’m used to coming out of the gate next to these guys. Knowing that I’ve won a few AA mains, my confidence is way up. It’s beginning to be second nature. Many people don’t realize that you have helped teach at least 1/3rd of the BMX community how to race by doing Supercamp Clinics. How are the clinics going this year? BUBBA: The clinics are getting better and better. We’ve had Dusty Black — another Redline rider, helping out this year. We’ve got a lot of return riders. And I’d say everyone learns more about racing by the time they leave. Having done clinics since you were 9 years old, what would you say is the No.1 mistake you see made by riders. BUBBA: For riders first starting out, coming in to BMX racing, I’d recommend them to stay off clips. Learn how to ride and maneuver your bike with platforms. We see a lot of kids putting on clipless pedals too soon. How about on the track ... what’s the most common error? BUBBA: Using your legs when you manual. A lot of kids don’t do that. They kinda lean back and are way too stiff. It’s one of those things where practice makes perfect. So what can we expect from Bubba in 2005? BUBBA: A whole bunch of pedaling! (laughter). That’s about it.

How long have you had the goal to win every single No.1 title there is? KIM: I wanted to do it as an amateur— win every Girl title there was. I did it in Cruiser twice, but unfortunately never became No.1 Girl. I came close and took No.2. But now as a pro, I think after last year—when I won the first main and then crashed in the next two, I set that as my goal. In 2004, I wanted to win every No.1 there was. I’ve trained really hard and it’s looking like I can do it. Well, you just got back last week from Holland where you won the UCI World Championships. One down, two more to go. What’s your strategy? KIM: I just need to keep doing what I’m doing. Riding on the track a lot. Improving my skills. In the ABA, I have in all my wins. So anything from here on out is just blocking. Keeping the others from closing the points gap. As far as training, I’m hoping to step it up a little more. Nothing drastic. Turning pro at 15; the youngest age possible ... you’ve probably learned a lot in these last two and a half years... KIM: Definitely. Pretty much when I was an amateur, it was pretty much me against Ashley Recklau. Or me against Samantha Cool. I usually only had one other girl to battle with. But in Pro, there’s 7 other girls who come out of the gate the same. All eight of us are attacking the first jump the same. We have the same power, the same skill. So what I had to learn was how to ride in a pack. How to make my way through the pack. And I feel like I’ve just now learned how to be a pro athlete with my training. It’s taken me a few years, but I feel like I’m there now. You ride a stock Flight Expert frame—which the specs are listed in the back of this catalog. What are YOUR specs? KIM: I’m 128 and 4 foot 10. Not quite the 5 foot mark. I could be classified as a legal midget. I could get one of those handicap plates and get good parking spaces, but I won’t (laughter). People used to think riders like you and Donny Robinson were at a distinct disadvantage. But you’ve obviously worked it to be your advantage... KIM: When I first turned pro, it seemed like a disadvantage. Jamie Lilly is really tall. There’s a lot of girls who are built bigger. I did get pushed around a bit at first. But now that I’ve been training really, really hard, size doesn’t matter as much. One of the things with being my size, is my pedal speed is a lot quicker. Shorter legs equals faster pedal speed. Would you admit that you are the hardest working girl in the BMX business? KIM: I don’t know if I’m the hardest. But I do work hard every single day. You have to, if you want every No.1 title there is.

You’re starting your fifth year of driving the Redline Rig all around the country. Describe your job duties from Monday to Sunday... JASON: The summer months (April to October for me) are really busy. Pit set up happens on Thursday, race Friday to Sunday and run the pit area—answering questions, set up bike display’s and the Nintendo game station, pick up Dale Holme’s trash, etc. We break it all down Sunday night and head out for the next stop. Monday to Wednesday is spent driving, buffing up at the gym, riding trails, doing clinics, and a bit more driving. Then it all starts over. What’s the best thing about doing what you do for a living? JASON: I never have to put on a pair of loafers or khaki stain defender pants. I promote Redline Bicycles for a living. It can’t get much better than that. Racing for Redline and doing your job can’t be all fun and games — what’s the most dreadful part about your gig? JASON: About the 13th weekend in a row, the breakdown gets a bit tiring. Being on the road in general wears me down. I dream about a week at home like most people think about vacation. I know... cry me a river. Tell us something about yourself that not many people in BMX know about you? JASON: One of my best friends had me arrested for prank calling his house. What a great guy! That $400 could have bought me something nice. Best track in Texas? JASON: You can’t beat the Desoto facility but some new jumps would be great from time to time. Best place to live in Texas? JASON: I grew up around Dallas but Austin wins hands down. It’s a laid back, biker-friendly town and the 9th Street trails are nice. Where is the party capitol of Texas?
