expression of joy to be appreciated and shared with one another. In these extraordinary times we may be facing uncertainty, worry, and fatigue; it can be hard to see the beauty around us. Here in Milford we are a community that comes together, and that can be tricky in a time of social distance. So, how can we all feel better? We can talk to each other—on the phone, online, and even by shouting out to your neighbors from across the street when you venture out. Take long walks and connect with others with a smile as you take in the spring. Look to the river and shore and watch for our migrant birds returning home to Milford where they will rest in our trees and greet you with a morning song when you awake. Milford Historical Society offers fascinating tours that explain the meaning of symbols carved into the stones and the stories behind unusual sculptures…including one hauntingly beautiful weeping lady. Take a stroll along the boardwalk at Walnut Beach. Aside from the spectacular views and fresh salt air, be sure to look for the ad hoc art that dots your surroundings. Many visitors have taken to creating sculptures with what they come across; shells are lined up to form shapes and driftwood is stacked creating interesting forms. A Mission to Inspire Change

O

ut of a personal tragedy, Donna Cimarelli has created a life-affirming opportunity. Her daughter, Maren Victoria Sanchez, lost her life during an attack while attending Jonathan Law High School on April 25, 2014. In the aftermath of this tragic event, Donna has channeled Maren’s indomitable spirit into a force for positivity and change. “I know that she would never want us to sit around and cry, but to get up and make things happen just the way she did when she was physically among us,” Cimarelli says. In 2016, she founded the Maren Sanchez Home

popular German drinking song states, “In heaven there is no beer, that’s why we drink it here.” By “here” they just might mean Connecticut. The craft beer industry—small, independent brew pubs and microbreweries—has exploded in the last few decades, and Connecticut has become a major player in the U.S. beer boom. In 2011, Connecticut had only 16 breweries; now there are almost 100.

hroughout its few centuries, downtown Milford has been the site of countless businesses that have risen and fallen. For a time, the Flagg & Baldwin Straw Hat Factory was one of the most profitable and successful.

In the mid-19th century, approximately 2,450 people lived in the Milford community. At the height of Flagg & Baldwin’s success in 1868, they employed as many as 700 workers, accounting for more than 30 percent of the local workforce. The factory attracted workers from all over New England, as people were transitioning from farm work to manufacturing jobs due to the Industrial Revolution. Arthur Stowe, a Milford historian, recalls his greatgrandmother made the trek to Milford from Maine to be employed at Flagg & Baldwin. A big part of the success of the business was attributed to Miss Mary Mills, later Mrs. Isaac Green. Mills was brought over from England to work at the factory, and taught employees to sew straw braids into the hats that created the finished product that would be sold globally. Though Flagg retired in 1860, the company continued with Baldwin and George Furman as its shop superintendent. Baldwin was often described as a boss who was sympathetic,

Vanderhoef, the businessman behind the majority of straw hat sales in New York at the time, leased the Flagg & Baldwin factory in 1880, and for many years following it was rebranded as Vanderhoef & Company. The factory continued producing straw hats until 1916 when Vanderhoef & Company dissolved. According to former Milford mayor Joel Baldwin (1973-77), the factory was torn down

milford’s attic Furniture makers in Connecticut created the heart-and-crown chair design that was made popular in the mid-1700s. This example was made in Milford by resident Andrew Durand (1702–1791), well known for expertly crafting the intricately designed chair with its turned ogee curves, s-shaped curves, and concave and convex lines. This superbly turned chair features a high back with a cutout heart and a curved crown-like top. The ring turnings on the legs and top are painted with touches of gold. It has smoothly controlled sausage-turned stretchers. Most heart-and-crown chairs were painted black or dark brown with a seat of natural rush. —Marilyn May This chair and others can be seen at the Milford Historical Society.
