On Wednesday, March 6, the Washington & Jefferson College community gathered in record numbers to attend the annual charity basketball game against a group of Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers, led by Quarterback Charlie Batch, defeated the W&J team with a final score of 80-64. As most will agree, the final score was the last thing that mattered on a night like this. The event raised $5,000 to benefit the Washington County Special Olympics, Tim McNerney Scholarship and NFL “Play 60.” “This year was particularly special, and we thank the Steelers for joining forces with us to raise the most money we ever have from this game,” said Steve Anderson, Associate Dean of Student Life at W&J. Anderson continued, “This game was in memory of Tim. It was for his family and the group of special Olympians who joined us this evening.” McNerney was a senior football player from Butler, Pa., who was killed on Oct. 4. 2012.

Today, McKenzie refuses “to let my past define my future.” She says that while “she was a victim in the past,” she “no longer is one.” “I am not a survivor, but rather a liberator,” said McKenzie. She considers herself to be a voice for those who continue to be enslaved and is determined to make positive strides in ending this struggle. McKenzie’s best advice for those wishing to bring about awareness and change for sex trafficking is to inform communities, learn from others and share all that you know. She encourages everyone to visit www.sharedhope.org to learn more about this issue. McKenzie’s final message: “address what we are slaves to in our own lives and, most importantly, do something about it.”

Camerata Singers Love NYC Mike Nemchick Red&Black Staff
Washington & Jefferson’s Camerata Singers are a more professional subset of the college’s choir directed by Dr. Medley that performers join through audition only. The Camerata Singers, currently comprised of 22 members, perform at multiple events on and off campus every year, while meeting twice every week to practice. Singers also tend to put extra time in, meeting with each other out of scheduled practices to get more time in together. The group is dedicated to putting on good performances, holding themselves to a very high standard. On Saturday, March 9th, the Camerata Singers performed at the Cathedral of St. John the divine in New York City. This is the largest cathedral in the world and is famously known for its eight second reverberation time. The singers performed alongside the 100 member Pittsburgh Concert Chorale, also directed by Dr. Medley. Both groups performed songs separately but all came together to perform Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy, sung in German. The Camerata Singers performed Beati Quarum Via and Justorum Animae by Stanford as well as Christus Factus Est and Locus Iste by Bruckner.

Some of W&Js Camerata singers pose in Times Square. Although the professional performances were stressful and challenging for the singers, they also had some time to relax and explore NYC.
Indicative to their titles, all four of these numbers were sung in Latin. Musicians from the Manhattan School of Music made up the orchestra that accompanied the singers. Senior student at W&J College Hannah Russell proclaimed that “it was an honor” to be part of this performance. She stated that this “is the biggest event the singers have been a part of since my sophomore year.” When asked about what it is like to sing in Latin, Hannah claims that “pronunciation is not too difficult after you learn the words, even though
you have no idea what the words you are singing mean much of the time.” In any case, she iterated that singing in Latin is much easier than singing in German. When not performing in large choral events Hannah simply enjoys “spending time with choir in general.” This is not the Camerata Singers first big event of the year. Earlier in Feb., 12 members of the group, including Hannah Russell, performed in the All Star College Chorus, participating in the Marvin Hamlisch Memorial Concert.
On the listed date and time, a group of three students came to the security office to file a complaint. The three reported that while they were walking toward Beau Hall on the walkway at the rear of the commons when someone began to throw snowballs at them. The group turned to see seven people in the group that was throwing the snowballs. The three victims turned around and told them to stop throwing snowballs at them. The other group tried to play it off like snow just fell off the roof of the commons. The victims again told the group to stop and that “we do not know you and you should not play around.” They victims then started to walk away and a member of the snowball group yelled at them to “not get a real ******* attitude.” The student came up to the victims as if looking for a fight. The aggressor was called back by their friends and the victims then went to the security office. The victims said this is not the first time something like this had happened on campus and that they did not feel safe. 3/8/13 Accident Dispatch received several calls about a vehicle driving on campus between Bica-Ross and New-Res. Upon arrival, a gray jeep was parked on the sidewalk between Bica-Ross and New-Res. Alongside the jeep were several students who pointed out the driver of the jeep. Security asked the driver what happened and the driver stated that they were driving to their room. The driver seemed very confused and had a hard time finding their drivers license. The driver had a strong smell of alcohol about his person. They stated that they drove here because they thought it was home. The driver wanted security to just put them back in the jeep so they could just sleep it off and leave in the morning. Washington City Police arrived and took the driver into custody, placing them under arrest for drunk driving. A wall in front of Bica-Ross was damaged from when the driver tried to back out of the side area. The driver was not a student. 3/10/13 Act 64

While clearing rooms in Mellon Dorm on a fire alarm, an officer noticed a gravity bong in a room. The officer then went into the room and checked the dorm. Inside the room were the following items: two bottle cap pipes, one glass smoking pipe, two bic lighters, one burnt candle, several empty Ziploc baggies and a mason jar. The baggies and Mason jar smelled of marijuana. The gravity bong was destroyed and the other items were placed in the evidence locker. The pipes are commonly used to smoke marijuana. Also, the smoke detector in the room was covered with plastic.

What’s Faster than a Speeding Black Hole? Almost Nothing Jake Meyers Red&Black Staff
NASA just released some of its newest findings regarding supermassive black holes-they spin incredibly fast. Just how fast do they spin, you might ask? 670 million miles per hour, less than a million miles per hour off the speed of light. Astrophysicists have long speculated that supermassive black holes (SMBH) rotate faster and grow larger as they feast on gas, dust, stars and matter in the heart of each galaxy. Up until now, there has not been any sort of reliable method to measure the speed at which these supermassive black holes spin. One of the biggest hurdles scientists have in terms of analyzing black holes is simply locating them. Objects with a mass that range in the millions to billions times that of the sun are not so easy to find it turns out. The location of SMBHs relies on the surrounding area of these behemoth galactic bodies, for they emit high energy X-rays where space telescopes, like the NuStar telescope from NASA and the XMM-Newton telescope from the European Space Agency, can detect. An international team
comprised of both Americans and Europeans observed high energy X-rays released by a supermassive black hole during a feeding frenzy, which is when another galactic body is consumed by a black hole. The SMBH observed was in the middle of a neighboring galaxy and the international team of scientists calculated its spin rate to be just shy of the speed of light, or 670 million miles per hour. Traveling at the speed of light is unimaginably fast. If you were to travel from the Earth to the Moon at the speed of light, it would only take you 1.5 seconds. Subsequently it would only take 4 minutes to travel to Mars and 8 minutes to travel to the other side of the sun. During Apollo 11, it took 3 days, 3 hours and 49 minutes to fly to the Moon. Traveling at the speed of light, the Apollo 11 mission could have completed nearly one million trips to the moon there and back during that timeframe. This is the first “unambiguous measurement of the spin rate” of a supermassive black hole, University of Maryland astronomer Christopher Reynolds explained. SMBHs are thought to reside in the center of each galaxy with a density so extreme light cannot es-

cape such a powerful gravitational pull. If you were to find yourself in a black hole, light would be distorted and these distortions would further distort, creating an unimaginable visualization. You would also begin to feel the effects of Spaghettification, a phenomenon that is described by the vertical stretching and horizontal compression of objects into long thin shapes in a very strong gravitational field. If a human were to undergo spaghettification
feet first, our head and feet would grow to an astronomical size. Your body would most closely resemble “toothpaste being extruded out of the tube,” according to Charles Liu, an astrophysicist who works at the American Museum of Natural History’s Hayden Planetarium. Your feet would travel faster to the center of the black hole than that of your head, and you would be stretched out like a spaghetti noodle. Light and time is distort-
ed beyond comprehensible calculation, but even if your body was somehow able to survive in space, your brain would dissociate into its constituent atoms almost instantly, resulting in immediate death. The study of black holes is one of great excitement and imagination, for black holes are poorly understood and discovering more about these goliath galactic giants can give scientists clues to the mysteries of the universe.

Early Treatment Cures Baby of HIV, Provides Hope for Millions
Jake Meyers Red&Black Staff
A two and half year old child from Mississippi born with HIV has been cured of the virus according to scientists. The child has been off of medication for over a year now, and is showing no sign of infection. There is no guarantee that the child will remain healthy and HIV free, however, for latent forms of the virus is still present within the immune system. This is not the first case of an HIV cure. In 2008, a man from Berlin was cured of HIV after receiving a bone marrow transplant, which resulted in a new immune system. The bone marrow was taken from an individual who is immune to HIV. This transplantation gave the patient strength to continue taking a retroviral drug that keeps HIV in check. The German man
has been off of HIV medication now for five years. News of another cure, especially in a child, gives the science and medical community hope for an eventual universal cure. AIDSplagued countries in Africa suffer from HIV infection, with a significant portion being children. Treatment used in the Mississippi child’s cure provides promising clues in terms of efforts to eliminate the HIV infection in children. This particular patient was born with the virus, as are many children in Africa. Using this same treatment from the moment of birth seems to be the solution in this burdensome battle against HIV. Dr. Hannah Gay, a pediatric HIV specialist at the University of Mississippi, treated the newborn baby within 30 hours of the child’s life with an attack known as threedrug infusion. This was a stronger and faster attack against the vi-
rus that ultimately helped in the eradication of the viral infection, save a few remnants of the virus’s genetic material. The mother of the child wasn’t diagnosed with HIV until she was giving labor. This is the point where Dr. Hannah Gay decided to implement this aggressive treatment strategy. This quick action prevented the virus from becoming dormant in the blood stream, allowing the newborn’s immune system to attack the virus in combination with the three-drug infusion. Allowing the HIV virus to remain dormant in the bloodstream creates a reservoir that ultimately devastates a patient’s immune system, a precursor to AIDS. 300,000 children were born with HIV in 2011. This new aggressive treatment strategy provides optimism for a cure in an infection that usually incites pessimism.

The Perils of Being Twenty Something

Logging off from technology can help you finally rest and recuperate.
Ashley Burk Red&Black Staff
When is the most important time in our lives? Is it when we graduate college, get married, have kids or finally get that big promotion you have been waiting for? There is no right answer in my opinion because is all depends on the person, but a recent article from TED “Talks” series suggest that our 20s are the most important time in our lives. University of Virginia clinical psychologist Meg Jay sat down to talk with LinkedIn and called the 20s the “most defining decade of adulthood,” a period when the brain has its last major growth spurt and more than half of Americans either marry or begin dating their future partner. About two-thirds of lifetime wage growth also occurs in the first 10 years of a career, she said. Considering the fact that I am in my twenties right now, I think my only and most important milestone of my 20s already occurred. I turned 21 and now I wonder what is next, but I also know that my 20s are one of the only times I
will be able to put all of my focus on my friends, job, significant other, etc. because once you are married and having kids your views on what is important shifts. Meg Jay said that many think their 20s don’t matter because a lot of developmental milestones in life are happening later. People
“People are getting married later and having kids later and also living longer than they did a decade ago. ...We are getting the sense that we have a lot of time.” are getting married later and having kids later and also living longer more so than they did a decade ago. Jay also says that we are getting the sense that we have a lot of time. I guess to the certain extent I would have to agree with what Meg is saying because when my friends and I discuss getting married or having kids, we always say that we are fine waiting until our late twenties and early thirties for those things to happen.
We wonder what the rush is, but Jay says that it is human behavior to think we have more time than we do. Jay also talks about way to avoid making career mistakes during your twenties. She says that your 20s are a time to explore what you like, but you must be careful to make sure it is conscious and productive rather than stalling. Jay offered some good advice as to how to manage your twenties saying that twenty-something’s fall into two different groups. One group wants a good job and the other has a good job and is terrified of losing it. The twenty-something is especially fearful of criticism and correction, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t hear it. She goes on to say that twentysomething’s are new to the work world and that it can be an overwhelming experience. Just thinking about graduating terrifies me because I am so nervous to actually have a real job and have to pay bills. I can only hope to take Meg Jay’s advice and not stress over the little things. Our twenties only happen once and I know I do not want to waste them. So I won’t.

We all tend to think of only the benefits that technology has brought to us and our society. There is no doubt that technology has created an easier and more efficient way of life. Although one may be surprised to know that technology may not be as beneficial as we would like to believe. Researchers have recently made it known to the public that technology has some very profound negative effects on a human being. For starters, technology zaps your focus and productivity. We, as college students, can all relate to this one. How often do you choose to sit on Facebook or Twitter causing you to put off studying and homework? Think of all the hours spent on social networks which could have been time spent studying. We are all guilty. Technology is also proving to increase stress. Surveys taken by individuals stated that social media increases one’s stress due to “Social Media Anxiety Disorder.” Individuals with this disorder are claiming that social media creates stress because of the opportunity to compare themselves to peers on Facebook
and Twitter and the effect those comparisons have on self-esteem. So if you are stressed…what else would this effect? Sleep. Technology may interfere with one’s sleep. It is quite obvious that when your buzzing cell phone is sitting by you in bed it will keep you from sleeping. The lack of sleep that can build up, and after multiple nights of sleep deprivation it can eventually cause more severe issues such as memory problems, heart attacks, obesity or stroke. If you are spending all your free time on an electronic device, chances are you are not allowing your creative juices to flow. This is why technology affects one’s creativity. Lastly, technology hurts individuals. Technology is hurting individuals because...think about it…you hunch over a computer screen, you strain your eyes to look at a cell phone or computer screen. One’s posture is being extremely affected by technology. As researchers continue to discover more and more negative aspects of technology on a human, technology becomes more and more popular. It seems that although technology may have an abundance of negative effects, it will not be going anywhere for a while.

"Hackademics" Subvert Traditional Education

College isn't for everyone, and some people are joining an active moment against organized universities. They aren't against education, just for profit schools and rising tuition costs.
Bailey Mudrick Red&Black Staff We all know that Bill Gates didn’t go to college, yet he was able to succeed in creating a multi-million-dollar business. Many young people argue when telling their parents they don’t want to attend college, that there are a lot of successful adults who didn’t attend college like Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg and even Walt Disney, who have made a huge impact on society. Young people argue, “Well College isn’t for everyone,” and this is exactly what Dale J. Stephens argued in January 2011. Stephens started a movement that had the whole world’s attention. Stephens started a website called Uncollege.org in early 2011. The story states that Stephens was unschooled for grades six through twelve and enrolled at Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas following “high school.” He was frustrated with some aspects of his college experience and spent much of his first semester thinking and writing about what could be done to address his concerns. Over his first winter break back home, Stephens talked with Rebecca Goldman, a fellow unschooler who left Dartmouth College, about his frustrations with higher education. They found that they had precisely the same frustrations about college, even though they had attended different institutions. They both had a vision of what college should be, and how they could fix the flaws of college. Just like the movie “Accepted,” the duo would make their college dreams a reality. Stephens brings a unique perspective on the future of education, talent and innovation. An educational futurist and speaker on issues facing
Generation Y, he delivers core insights about learning, technology and success. He is a sought-after education expert appearing on major news networks including CNN, ABC, NPR, CBS, Fox and TechCrunch. His work has been covered by the New York Times and New York Magazine to Fast Company and Forbes. UnCollege is a social movement designed to help you hack your education. This manifesto will show you how to gain the passion, hustle and contrarianism requisite for success — all without setting foot inside a classroom. Stephens offers a new type of learning. A way to expand your knowledge without paying hundred of thousands of dollars, but does it actually work? Uncollege is hosting a camp this spring in May. During the Hackademic Camp participants will split their time between learning the skills required to hack their own education, such as finding mentors and building networks. They will also develop solutions to the problems they identify with the existing institutions of higher education. But if you want to see for yourself if Stephen’s dream of an alternate college is possible check out his new book, “Hacking Your Education.” The book is ready to buy on Amazon and at Barnes and Noble. Stephen quotes in the book, “If you’re looking for an easy solution, shortcut or way to work less, this book is not for you. Hacking your education requires tons of hard work and determination.” “Hacking Your Education” offers valuable advice to current students as well as those who decided to skip college. Stephens teaches you to create opportunities for yourself and design your curriculum, inside or outside the classroom. Whether your dream is to travel the world, build a startup or climb the corporate ladder, Stephens proves you can do it now, rather than waiting for life to start after “graduation” day.

Telescope Observes Elements on Planets Orbiting White Dwarves Rebecca Hendricks Red&Black Contributor The James Webb Space Telescope, commonly referred to as the JWST, is capable of detecting elements such as oxygen and water on Earth-like planets orbiting white dwarves. AstroBio.net notes that, “The James Webb Space Telescope has been in the news a lot lately. Often referred to as the replacement for the Hubble Space Telescope…its expanding budget has
caused politicians and others to wonder if the promised returns justify the cost.” White dwarves, or dead stars that are cooling down, often have several planets orbiting them, and since they are much smaller than living stars, have habitable zones that are conducive to the temperatures required for surface liquid water. Scientists have developed a technique called transmission spectroscopy, which analyzes the atmosphere of an orbiting
planet when the planet passes in front of a star from Earth’s point of view. The light that shines through the atmosphere of the planet reaches the JWST in different wavelengths depending on the elements in the atmosphere of the planet, thus allowing scientists to detect and analyze the composition of the planet’s atmospheric elements. Certain elements are noted “biomarkers,” signifying the potentiality of a planet to contain life.
Significant biomarkers include oxygen and methane. The JWST, which will launch in a few years, will examine the infrared part of spectrums, which is where biomarkers will be most prominent. NBCNews.com claims, “No planets have yet been detected orbiting a white dwarf, due to the difficulty in observing these faint stars, however there is some evidence to suggest that such planets might exist.”

Google Glass: Future of Technology?

Ashley Burk Red&Black Staff When I first heard that someone was “functionally” cure of HIV I was astounded. Surely there had to be some mistake because scientists had been working so long to find a cure, and now they may actually have one. I was even more baffled when I learned that the person cured was a two-year-old baby girl. Researchers believe that their early intervention – in this case within 30 hours of the birth – with three antiviral drugs was key to the outcome. Now I’m guessing all they have to do it just replicate the results. However, it seems too good to be true. The fact that researchers have been working for numerous years just trying to make a dent in the HIV virus, and now they have actually gained traction in the uphill battle thanks to a two-year-old girl just seems like a miracle. But maybe that’s exactly what we need. I can say one thing about this baby being “functionally” cured. It definitely gives us hope that one day maybe this virus will be under control and it can actually be cured. A “functional cure” is when the presence of the virus is so small, life-long treatment is not necessary and standard clinical tests cannot detect the virus in the blood. The unidentified Mississippi girl was born HIV-positive to a mother that had received no prenatal care and was not diagnosed as HIVpositive until right before she gave birth. It seems that in the case of a possible neglectful parent, there was a medical breakthrough. The timing of the intervention appears to be the most important step in treating the baby rather than the amount of antiviral drugs the girl was given. It looks as if the treatment was able to wipeout the virus before it was able to form any hideouts in the body. Many more studies will have to be conducted, but as of right now it seems that HIV is able to be cure in infants. I think that although researchers may not have found a cure for everyone, being able to cure infants is better than nothing. This will make researchers push harder to find a cure because they now know it is possible. There is only one man in the world that is believed to have been cured of HIV. In 2007 Timothy Ray Brown’s infection was eradicated through an intense treatment for leukemia that involved destroying his immune system and a stem cell transplant from donor with a rare genetic mutation that resists the HIV virus. This is definitely a more complex way to cure someone, but I can understand how and why it worked. Since Brown’s immune system was basically destroyed and he had to receive a stem cell transplant, it is almost like he got to start over. Hopefully, when scientists look at both cases they will be able to make more headway in this uphill battle and a cure will become a reality instead of just a dream.

Meant to be worn on the face, Google Glass can take voice commands, take pictures and give directions.
Alexis Geeza Red&Black Staff Google recently released more information on its Google Glass project, a pair of glasses that functions like a hands-free smartphone. It’s essentially a wearable computer with a head-mounted display that can do things like interact with the internet via voice commands and uses Google’s Android operating system. The tentative release date is sometime in late 2013 or even 2014, and the projected price? Around 1,500 USD. Though worn like eyeglasses, Glass isn’t exactly like the stuff you see in spy movies. There are no lenses over the eyes, just a small screen (viewable via a mirrored glass block) above and to the right of the wearer’s right eye. The design is slim, flexible and currently comes in five different colors. Glass functions using voice commands, with the simple phrase “OK, Glass” activating its listening mode. Other voice commands
include “take a picture,” “record a video” and “get directions to…” Glass can do a number of other things so far, such as display the time, show the weather and popup event reminders. Users can also dictate texts, join Google Hangouts and search things with Google. Most likely more features will be revealed as time goes on. Theoretically a whole slew of apps could be developed using the Android system much like the apps currently available on smartphones. Glass has finally moved out of the “project” phase; earlier in Feb. Google held a contest wherein winners could apply to preorder the Glass eyewear by explaining how they would use this new tech in 50 words or less. Only Google employees and developers have been able to try out Glass thus far, so hopefully this means progress is being made in making the product available for consumers. Reception for Google Glass has generally been positive in the technology industry. In Nov. 2012, Time magazine recognized Glass as one of the “Best Inventions
of the Year 2012,” and designer Diane von Furstenberg’s spring fashion models wore Glass down the runway at the 2012 New York Fashion Week. Privacy is one of the main concerns, as some critics have brought up the issue of people being able to identify strangers in public with facial recognition or record and broadcast private conversations (though there are barely any privacy laws in regards to public places in the first place). Only time will tell how these sorts of concerns will be handled once more of the general public has access to Glass and devices like it. What does Google Glass mean for the future of technology? Well for starters, technology is starting to look more like its being ripped right out of a sci-fi movie. I’ve always joked about having a computer in my glasses, but Google is making these things a reality even as I joke about it. It will obviously take some time for tech like Glass to become cheap enough that regular people can buy it, but the fact that we’re already heading down that path is exciting.

Hate Crimes Cited at Ohio College International “Safe Haven”: Fast Food Mike Nemchick Red&Black Staff
Mike Nemchick Red&Black Staff
Oberlin College, located in Ohio, is a small private liberal arts school, known for being progressive and liberal minded. It is the first American university to allow male and female African American students. The college also takes pride in the fact that it was a stop in the Underground Railroad. It is also known to be very vegan friendly, where half of all dishes served in the dining hall are vegetarian or vegan. All of this makes it surprising that the college has recently been a site for a series of hate incidents targeting African American, Jewish, and LGBT communities. Throughout the month of February, vandalism with racist, homophobic, and anti-Semitic remarks have popped up all around campus. Then, on March 4, the most severe event occurred when a man or woman wearing full KKK garb was seen walking around campus. Student on campus numbered this hate incident as the seventh such happening in Oberlin for the past month. The man remains unidentified as an investigation into the incidents continues. Earlier, on February 17, a student was mugged and knocked down after the assailant made a derogatory comment on the victim’s perceived race. Vandalism includes writing on and inside of buildings as well as hateful flyers, some advertising the sale of KKK clothing. Some Oberlin professors even received bigoted flyers in their mailboxes. Classes were cancelled on March 4 for the day and a rally against hate event was held on campus. During the initial outbreak of vandalism on campus on February 13th, a march was held against the incident drawing in an estimated 460 student participants. Teach-ins and a convocation addressing these hateful incidents were also held on campus. The FBI has probed into the incidents on campus; however the extent of their investigation is unknown. Student and professors are showing campus wide solidarity against these incidents, making it clear that this type of behavior is not acceptable. There was some debate as to whether or not cancelling class was an appropriate response to these incidents. Some argued that cancelling class is disrupting learning and giving into those perpetuating this speech. Others made clear there is a difference between giving in and fighting back. As the day was used for teach-ins, rallies and a convocation addressing the issues the campus was doing anything but giving in. Investigations will continue and only time will tell if these incidents will come to a halt.
Fast food is often considered an American cultural phenomenon; however these convenient eateries are ubiquitous all around the world. McDonald’s leads the way worldwide. The company is so prevalent around the world that the Economist has even come up with the Big Mac Index. This index is used to compare the purchasing power parity between currencies around the world, demonstrating to what extent currency exchange rates make identical items cost the same. A former French exchange student at Washington & Jefferson College, Elodie Grimaldi, states that “no matter which country you are in, if the food is weird or you don’t have money, you will always look for McDonald’s as a safe haven.” Elodie experienced this first hand, after taking a trip to Hong Kong she ate “more McDonald’s food in a week than in a normal year.” While fast food restaurants around the world can provide safe havens for picky eaters, international franchise locations also offer unique selections in different localities. For example, in France, customers can enjoy, or at least try, the McBaguette, le croque McDO, and a new selection of sandwiches featuring French cheeses like camebert and raclette. Of course you can always keep it cool and order a royal with cheese, much tastier than Big Kahuna Burgers. However when taking a trip to a country with some of the best food in the world, unless you are completely strapped for cash you should do yourself a favor probably stay out of McDonald’s. Fast food in China has been growing in popularity; KFC is by far the favorite franchise in the country. While you can still find the classic fried chicken in Chinese branches, the company does well by catering to local tastes. On the menu you can find congee, egg custard tart, and a selection of wraps and sandwiches not found in U.S. stores. There are 50 or more items on a Chinese KFC menu, a much larger selection than in the U.S. What is interesting when it comes to fast food in China is that it costs as much as or more to eat fast food then to have a meal at a normal restaurant. There are cheap noodle and family run restaurants all over the place in Chinese cities. Fast food can sometimes be quicker and is considered trendier, which may contribute to its popularity. Taco Bell, arguably the tastiest of fast food establishments, has spread slowly but currently operates to the public in 24 countries. Before closing down in 2008, China housed three Taco Bell Grande restaurants that operate more like a Mexican grill than a fast food restaurant, offering actual Mexican style cuisine and even margaritas. Other than this exception, Taco Bell has the least varied international menu allowing customers to dine on unidentifiable meat to their hearts’ content.

“Ruzzle” Tops Out the Charts Abrianne Rhoad Red&Black Editor
Even if I hadn’t already deleted Zynga’s “Words With Friends,” and even if my friends hadn’t senselessly badgered me for not previously having “Ruzzle,” a boggle-type game by MAG Interactive, I would have easily had my attention occupied by the game’s alluring competitiveness and ease (read: how long it can hold my attention and not make me regret giving it space on my dwindling memory card). I can recall quite a number of games I’ve reviewed in the past—“Tiny Tower” by Mobage, Adult Swim’s “Monsters Ate My Condo,” Rovio Studio’s “Angry Birds” and “Bad Piggies,” “Temple Run” by Imangi Studios, OMG POP’s “Draw Something,” Halfbrick Studio’s “Fruit Ninja” and “Stupid Zombies” by GameResort—you name it, I’ve played it, fallen in love with it, reviewed it, grown bored of it and promptly deleted it. It’s a hard-knock life for mobile games when most of their players are as critical of a game’s longevity as I am. We get bored (and far too easily). Mashable’s Todd Wasser-
man wrote of “Ruzzle,” the breakout word game that beatout Zynga’s previous chart topper “Words with Friends,” in a game review. “Ruzzle, which was created by the Stockholm-based MAG Interactive, has topped AppData's chart of the top iOS apps and racked up 11 million users so far,” wrote Wasserman. He continued, “According to MAG Interactive's Twitter stream, the growth has really picked up in the past few weeks: MAG also notes on its site that ‘over 12 million players’ have downloaded the app. What’s driving the growth is unclear.” For those keeping up with the score, “Ruzzle” has secured the titles of “Number one word game on App Store in 50 countries,” “Number one overall on App Store in USA” and “Number one casual game on Google Play in 30 countries” in the full year since its initial release date in March 2012. As the Wall Street Journal's “Digits” blog found, the game is "strikingly similar" to
Zynga's “Scramble With Friends.” Whatever the correlation between “Ruzzle” and “Scrabble,” there are things that set former apart from its counterparts. For starters, “Ruzzle” games can be played in English, French, German, Dutch, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish and Italian, though I haven’t be brave enough to hazard anything outside of English and Spanish. Although the quick, twominutes-per-round games are effective enough to pause whole conversations mid-sentence, I wouldn’t recommend playing “Ruzzle” unless you know you can afford to be interrupted without awkwardly having the explain that you need a minute (or two) to finish. If I had a dollar for every time I had to ignore a phone call or charming game that ever is being asked to play. I risked losing a round or an entire game to tease coaches with a human dictionary, I could rent a room in a motel.

Art Major Spotlight: Kelly Donaldson ‘13 Rebecca Hendricks Red&Black Contributor
Senior Kelly Donaldson knew she wanted to pursue a major in art early in her undergraduate career. She came to Washington & Jefferson College to study Biology, but decided her sophomore year to declare as an art major. Donaldson tends to work mainly with ceramics, but has been working more with porcelain this year. Her works will be on display at her Senior Show. Donaldson’s Senior Show will be one of the first shows to be exhibited at W&J. Her works will be on display starting April 12, with an opening at 7p.m. in the Olin Gallery. Some of her favorite classes have been her ceramics classes. Donaldson also enjoys her art history classes with Dr. Lambertson. Her long term goals include moving to London, England to work in a museum as a curator. Donaldson’s cites her advisor, Professor Maloney, as much of her motivation to get her work done and pursue a career post graduation. “My advisor Pat Maloney is really awesome, I love her!” said Donaldson. Her short term goal is to work in a museum in downtown Pittsburgh and hopes to sell some of her art there. Donaldson throws pottery on the wheel, but most of her senior show is handmade birds and leaves. She created them from scratch. Her focus is on flight, change and travel. She loves to travel, and she feels that “change will always affect you, even if you don’t want it to—it’s a constant…” Donaldson joined Greek Life and happily notes that “I get to use my artistic abilities for crafts for my sorority, and I’ve really enjoyed utilizing my passion that way.” Rebecca Hendricks/Red&Black She is also a member of the W&J Choir. Donaldson is a resident of Pittsburgh, PA and graduated from North Hills High School. She has a pet rabbit named Boo and her favorite artist is Louise Bourgeois.

Watson, Radcliffe Take on New Roles Rebecca Hendricks Red&Black Contributor Emma Watson and Daniel Radcliffe have officially begun to move past their “Harry Potter” days. Both stars have signed to new projects, according to MTVnews.com. Radcliffe announced this past week that he is considering joining “Frankenstein,” a spin-off of Mary Shelly’s original Gothic Romantic novel. Radcliffe is set to play Igor in a Max Landis script of “Frankenstein,” so it will be a very loose adaptation of the original novel. In a similar vein, Watson announced she is talking with producers about joining Kenneth Branagh’s “Cinderella.” The adaptation, which will be created for Disney, is set to be a more mature take on the fairy tale, much like past movies “Alice in Wonderland” and “Snow White and the Huntsman.” Watson has been described as a ‘natural choice’ for the role of Cinderella. Cate Blanchett is rumored to be cast as the stepmother alongside Watson. Both stars announced their new projects this past week and both films are literary spin-offs, much like the Harry Potter franchise. Radcliffe will be finishing up a run of Martin McDonagh’s “The Cripple of Inishmaan.” Watson just starred in “The Perks of Being a Wallflower,” as well as Darren Aronofsky’s “Noah.” Watson is 22 years old. According to Wikipedia.com, “Emma Charlotte Duerre Watson is an English actress and model. Watson rose to prominence playing Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter film series. She was cast as Hermione at the age of nine, having previously acted only in school plays.” Radcliffe is 23 years old. According to Wikipedia.com, “Daniel Jacob Radcliffe is an English actor who rose to prominence playing the title character in the Harry Potter film series.” Missing from the famous trio is actor Rupert Grint, age 24, who rose to fame playing Ronald Weasley in the Harry Potter series. Grint is starring in upcoming film “Postman Pat: The Movie—You Know You’re the One,” a 3D animated film featuring Postman Pat, star of a BBC children’s series.

How to Train an Actor: “21 and Over” Cast Talks About Beer Pong Bailey Mudrick Red&Black Staff When most actors are told they are playing a specific character for a movie they usually put themselves into the shoes of his or her character. For instance if an actor is told they are playing a ballerina, like in Black Swan, that actor would be in the dance studio for hours learning his or her routines. The “21 and Over” cast stood for hours in front of a ping pong table playing beer pong so they could master the arc for the final cup. Miles Teller, Skylar Astin and Justin Chon, are the three main actors of "21 & Over," that informed MTV news they practiced beer pong for hours. "The beer pong was all real. At one point they needed us to make the game-winning shot," Teller told MTV News. "We had to get it in one shot, so we actually had to make it; there's no cutaway. And Skylar was just having a really bad day. In the bonus footage, it's like 20 shots, something ridiculous. Not everyone performs under pressure." While filming a key scene in the comedy, Teller and Astin play an all-important game of beer pong that will help them accomplish their ultimate goal,
getting their passed-out friend, Justin Chon, home in time for his medical school interview, except Teller jokingly told MTV News that Astin couldn't get his game together for the cameras. Astin was quick to defend himself and his beer pong skills, claiming that a tight-fitting shirt was to blame for his underwhelming performance: “Listen, Here's the deal, and here's the excuse train coming into town, but I have one of those shirts that kind of cuts you off, the table was angled a bit, the formation was pretty rough, last cup," he said. "But I was sucking a whole bunch that day." “21 and Over” has been compared to the “Hangover,” as both movies screenwriting team consisted of Jon Lucas and Scott Moore. The New York Times describes the movie “21 and Over” as a tale that follows the characters of Miller and Casey, Astin and Teller as they embark on the not-so-herculean task of getting a passed-out Jeff home before an early-morning interview for medical school. Their efforts include playing beer pong, sneaking into a sorority and offending anyone who isn’t a straight white guy. Although the movie has received many poor reviews since it has come out, the actors were at least able to perfect their game of beer pong.
Ink Pens Turned Into Eating Utensils Rebecca Hendricks Red&Black Contributor
For just $9.50, you can be the owner of a set of utensils from Amazon.com called “Dine Ink”. The utensil set, which includes one fork, one spoon, and one knife, is composed of three ink pens and the respective utensil parts, which snap onto the end of the pen. For example, a part of the utensil kit is the ladle shaped part of a spoon, and it has a base shaped like the cap of a pen, which can in fact, be snapped onto a pen and used as a full sized spoon. This ridiculous kit is described as “Perfect for on-the-go eating and note taking”. Quite frankly, it is an obnoxious waste of plastic. The plastic utensil “caps” probably don’t click onto the
pens themselves with any sort of security, so the utensils most likely pop apart when you are trying to use them. I also find it disgusting to be sticking a pen into any sort of food after you’ve been carrying it around and writing with it. While it might be a unique
“collector’s item”, I think the Dine Ink utensil set is overpriced and impractical for a college student budget. It might be fun to play with but has no value as a true utensil set, and is a frivolous waste of money that could buy many sets of actual utensils and actual pens.

Ashley Burk Red&Black Staff Lately there has been a lot of speculation as to whether or not the recent Feb. 27 episode of “Law & Order: SVU” was inspired by Chris Brown and Rihanna. The episode was divided into two parts: one of their relationship and the other of how everything got turned upside down. There were certain event that were based on the Rihanna and Chris Brown saga, but many of the events were borderline absurd and exaggerated because of the multiple cameos including Perez Hilton, Dave Navarro, Jeffery Tambor and Wendy Williams. Overall the premise of the episode was that of a cautionary tale of an abusive relationship. The episode follows the relationship of two pop stars, Micha and Caleb and the events of the story begin to unravel after the male pop star assaults the female pop star at a recording session after he is caught “being trashy” with another girl. While Rihanna and Chris Brown’s moment of assault happened in a private moment, the assault featured on the episode was done in front of multiple witnesses, all of who were never willing to speak about it. The episode even features aspects of the real-life case that inspired it, including the leak of police photos, a lovey-dovey ode recorded by the pair and a fresh piece of ink that looks much like that of the pop stars battered face. However, the episode takes a fictional turn when an altercation occurs at a record release party. Shots are fired at the party shortly after Caleb arrives at the party and the Micha is found unconscious and her male friend and mentor is dead. It seems like everything is well and good and it appears that the Micha will tell the Grand Jury that Caleb was there that night, but instead she says that Caleb wasn’t there and she didn’t’ see anything. After everything is said and done, Micha and Caleb jet off to Bermuda together. The end of an episode took an unexpected and dark twist when Micha confronts Caleb about a text he receives and he asks her why “haven’t you learned to mind your own business?” Later that night, Micha’s body is found floating next to the boat that they were staying on.

Want to Be Taken Seriously? Be a Better Writer Bailey Mudrick Red&Black Staff
Dave Kerpen is a CEO at Likeable Local, a New York Times BestSelling Author and a Keynote Speaker. Kerpen comments on the many errors in common day writing and how it leads others to not taking people seriously. “Writing is a lost art,” Kerpen comments, “and many professionals don’t realize how essential a job skill it is. Even if you’re not a writer by trade, every time you click “Publish” on a blog, “Post” on an update or “Send” on an email…If you want to be thought of as a smart thinker, you must become a better writer. If you want to be taken seriously by your manager, colleagues, potential employers, clients and prospects, you must become a better writer,” says Kerpen. If you think about it, this makes a lot of sense. If you can’t communicate clearly when writing, how are other people supposed to know what you are trying to convey? If you have grammatical errors and dozens of misspellings, it shows laziness. Kerpen reports, “Your writing is a reflection of your thinking. Clear, succinct, convincing writing will differentiate you as a great thinker and a valuable asset to your team.” Kerpen give us five simple steps to follow to become a better writer in our everyday lives. Everyone is a victim of bad writing habits, but it’s never too late to fix those habits. 1) Practice, practice, practice. The truth is, the best way to get better at anything is to do it repeatedly. Write a personal blog. The more you write, the better you’ll become at writing. When writing a paper, begin with a draft first. 2) Say it out loud. Kerpen reads all of his articles and books out loud before publishing them. As college students, we write many emails and papers. Read them out loud as well. It’s great to hear your writing the way others will “hear” it as they read. A quick edit, before you put it out there is always a good idea. 3) Make it more concise. Less is often more, so during his editing process, Kerpen will often ask himself, “How can I say the same thing in fewer words?” People don’t have time to read long emails or articles so, out of respect for your intended audience, practice making your writings short and sweet. Kerpen even argues that tweeting has helped him a lot with this (and we all love tweeting!), as it obviously limits you to 140 characters. If you’re not on Twitter yet, this is another reason to get tweeting. 4) Work on your headlines. Spend equal time and energy working on your headline as you do the piece itself. Whether it’s the headline of a blog post, a subject line for an email or even the heading to a paper, your headlines will either grab your reader’s attention, and get them interested in what you have to say, or not. Lists and questions work very well as headlines and subject lines. Practice them. 5) Read. Besides practicing writing, the number one way to improve your writing skills is to read great work. Kerpen recommends reading at least one book per month, at least 20 articles per week, and countless tweets, Facebook posts and emails per day. We all have limited time, but truly the best way to become a better writer is to become a better reader.

“Getting What I Pay For,” College Degrees Ashley Burk Red&Black Staff It still baffles me that I pay 50,000 dollars to go to school at Washington & Jefferson College, but at least I know that I am getting what I pay for. W&J is providing me with a high-quality degree that will help me get a job hopefully in the near future. However, it is disheartening to find out that people who attend community colleges are making nearly 15% more than those who are attending four-year universities and graduating with a bachelor’s degree. On Feb. 22 Berevan Omer graduated with an associate’s degree from Nashville State Community College and started to work the following Monday as computer-networking engineer at a local television station making $50,000 a year. Omer is making 15 percent higher than the average salary for graduates, not only from community colleges, but also bachelor degree holders. What I want to know is, how is this possible? It is very upsetting that I have gone through a rigorous education to attain a four-year bachelors degree and now will potentially have nothing to show for it. What makes an associates degree so much better than a bachelor’s degree? When did I miss the memo that I could be making more money by going to school for less time? There are nearly 30% of Americans with an associate’s degree that make more than those with a bachelor’s degree. In other recent studies, it is also shown that on average, community college graduates right out of school make more than graduates of four-year universities. It is always thought that a bachelor’s degree is the default and that it is the
criteria for attaining a good job once you graduate, and I have to agree. Most companies list in their requirements that applicants should have a bachelor’s degree. The differences between a community college education and a four-year university education is staggering. On average, a two-year community degree costs about $6,262. A bachelor’s degree from a four-year, private residential university is around $158,072. So here is where I am confused. In my opinion, I do not think there is any way a community college grad should be out earning a four-year university grad. Careerbuilder.com recently reported that with a two-year college degree, air traffic controllers can make $113,547, radiation therapists can $76,627, dental hygienists $70,408, nuclear medicine technologists $69,638, nuclear technicians $68,037, registered nurses $65,853 and fashion designers $63,170. I guess it is possible to make more with a two-year degree. I suppose I should not be so rash in assuming that a two-year degree cannot get you anywhere. There is still something to be said for a bachelor’s degree though, because you are able to easily move on to get your master’s or PhD. If I had to go back to the time I was choosing which college to attend, even with all of the school loans I have been wracking up to attend college, I would still choose a fouryear university over a two-year community college degree. Eventually bachelor degree holders will catch up when it comes to salary and I still think there are more options for advancement when you have a bachelor’s degree instead of a community college associates degree.

Memorable Students, But Not in the Good Way Abrianne Rhoad Red&Black Editor
To a senior, tossing around the joke “I feel so old being on campus” is more commonplace than the sleepy looks we cast each other in passing as we trek through campus. Contextualizing the past four years tends to take on one of two sentiments, or what I call the “Ican’t-wait-to-graduate, get-me-out-of-here” or the “Ican’t-believe-these-four-years-passed, I-don’t-wantto-ever-leave” phases. Eventually, we’ll all settle on some happy medium where we’re happy to progressing but still feeling the pulls of nostalgia to a place and a community we’ve called home for the past few years. However way we get there, none of this has stopped me from thinking about my final few weeks as an undergraduate—spoiler alert, it’s less than 10. Last week we ran an article on the most memorable professors, “But Not in [a] Good Way,” and I suppose it took a few re-reads of the article and a few emails from professors to take a step back and see the broader picture. Being penned from collective frustrations
from writers and editors, the article was the perfect amalgamation of brute honesty and good-humored critique, but not necessarily a depiction of nor an attack on Washington & Jefferson College professors. As a reconciliation, I submit for your consideration a list of things my fellow peers do that cause me to believe that professors all around are saints for being able to put up with half of the things we do on a daily basis as students. Here are eight examplesof the worst kinds of students: (1) Students that always expect As in class, on every assignment; (2) Students that get angry if you don’t agree with them; (3) Students that believe that they can’t be wrong and feel personally offended when other people challenge them; (4) Students who skip class and complain when their professors can’t reproduce missed materials verbatim; (5) Students who are always late to class and, additionally, never prepared; (6) Students that believe they’re the only ones who meet with a specific professor and then get upset when they’re unavailable; (7) Students that show up to class in full-blown PJs; (8) Students that think GPAs are the end-all, be-all; (9) Students that can’t take a joke.
Letter to the Editor: “By Students, For Students” Submitted by Adam Kmett ‘15
In recent conversations about the W&J Student Government, many have contended the organization needs to do a better job expressing what it does on campus and how it works to create change. I agree. My own view is that Student Government has not done the best job of communicating its importance. I am writing to inform the student body of what we do and more specifically, what the Executive Board of SGA does. We are not a powerless organization, in fact, we are much the opposite. When something needs changed on campus it is voiced through our governing body. Unfortunately, many students who do not go to Student Government meetings may be unaware of the opportunities available to them. As students, we should be the pilots of our own college experience. If you are unsatisfied with that experience and hope to realistically change it for the better than Student Government is your voice. Don’t keep the conversation just on the walls of a friend’s Facebook page; let’s have a sober discussion about bettering our school together. As the new Student Body President, I am asking all W&J students to work together with me during the upcoming year. As Student Body President, I am a member of the Student Government Association Executive Board. The Executive Board is elected every year by the student body. This board consists of four positions. The President is the head of the Executive Board and holds considerable influence over the Committee Chairs within Student Government. The President meets with W&J staff regularly throughout the year to ensure the voice of the student body is heard. The Vice-President presides over Student Government meetings that are held every other Thursday and closely assists the other Executive Board members as needed. The Secretary keeps notes of Student Government meetings in addition to maintaining social contact with all the student organizations on campus. Lastly, the Treasurer oversees the $300,000 budget allocated for student clubs and organizations through the entire year. The Executive Board collectively oversees the success of the Student Government Committees including the Student Affairs Committee, Elections & Procedures Committee, Leadership Committee, Entertainment Committee, Publications Committee and City-Council Student Representatives. The success of these Committees as a whole is based upon a well-standing relationship and routine communication amongst student leaders. Some may be surprised to know that these positions are highly influential in terms of their ability to create meaningful change on campus. It is important these positions be taken seriously, as the leaders of these Committees students have the power to impact the future of W&J. Many of these positions will be available in the upcoming 2013-2014 academic year. If the opportunity to change the school for the better excites you and you are interested in obtaining a Committee Chair position, please feel free to contact me to discuss the selection process. It is important Student Government be taken seriously. Our Student Government works by the students and for the students. As your new President, I want to let you know I do not take the responsibility lightly and am calling on all of W&J’s students to make our community a better place by working together. We are Presidents. Juncta Juvant, together we thrive!

Letter to the Editor: “Life Begins At Conception” Submitted by Luke Gatten ‘15
Some biblical commandants are no longer relevant to today’s society, but isn’t murder still illegal under today’s law? The point of the numerous commandments in the Bible is basically to prove that it is impossible to achieve salvation through works and good deeds alone. Also, to call the best-selling most copied book of all time out of date or archaic is ignorant and base. For the politics of the matter, this is what the pro-life movement stands for and believes: Human life begins at conception. Abortion is the murder of a human being; an unborn baby as a living, human being has separate rights from those of the mother and a ban on partial birth abortion is necessary right away. For those of you who do not know what a partial birth abortion entails let me enlighten you. It is when a doctor or the person performing the abortion kills an unborn baby of at least 20 weeks by pulling it out of the birth canal (after forced dilation) with a pair of forceps but leaving the head inside, then making an incision in the back of the baby’s neck and suctioning out the brain material after separating the body from the head and eventually removing the head. Many are unaware that as an Illinois State Senator, Barack Obama not only opposed any kind of ban for partial birth abortions but also in 2002 then Senator Obama was the only one to speak in opposition to a “Born-Alive” bill proposed in the Illinois Senate that would prohibit Infanticide or killing a baby after a botched abortion when the baby had been born alive. In essence, Obama supported a bill to murder a new born baby when a similar bill had passed at the federal level of a vote of 980—none taking his side. As for the constitutionality of the abortion issue, Roe v. Wade is bad constitutional law. Rather than having our supreme court (in 1973 they were all men) declaring abortion legal, it should be a moral choice decided in a democratic fashion. Robert Bork, who was denied a seat on the Supreme Court by a 1987 liberal Senate, had the view that there is no basis in the Constitution for the privacy right which in turn was announced as the foundational basis for the constitutional right to abortion, and I agree with the late Bork. Bork argued for judicial silence on the issue and said the matter should be decided by state legislators, like gay marriage and legalizing marijuana. President Ronald Reagan said it best when he called the nation to a deeper cultural attitude of concern for innocent life in a 1983 article, “We cannot diminish the value of one category of human life—the unborn—without diminishing the value of all human life.” If [people] don’t think it matters if a tiny little heart is beating, then I call into question [their] moral understanding and am deeply concerned about the future of this nation.

North Korea Issues Threats Bus Segregation in 21st Cent. of Nuclear Strikes (Again) Afikim Adds to Isaeli-Palestinian Divide
courtesy dailytech.com
Hla Hpone “Jack” Myint Red&Black Staff In a rally of tens of thousands of soldiers and citizens that came to gather in Pyongyang March 6, Infantry General Kan Pyo Yong announced to the “excited” crowd that North Korea is now a “full-fledged nuclear weapons state” with long-range nuclear-armed missiles ready to fire at Washington. From the images and videos released, we see citizens celebrating this “victory;” singing along as marching bands play the national anthem and armies of soldiers stand armed in front of a large red sign that reads, “Dear high leader, just give us orders” in Korean. This shook the international community and media alike, raising serious concerns for the future possible outcomes of war between North Korea and several other nations, primarily the United States, South Korea and Japan. Following the event, United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki Moon released a statement that reads “This is completely unacceptable and a great challenge for the international community.” The Security Council has also unanimously voted in support of a resolution co-drafted by China and the United States that calls for a fourth round of sanctions to be imposed on North Korea; this time focusing on the companies and banks in China that maintain affiliations with the North Korean government. North Korea mainly blames the United States as the key figure behind these sanctions, and the United Nations as the U.S.’s “war servant.” In addition to that, North Korea accuses the United States of initiating a nuclear war due to the establishment of U.S. – South Korea military drills. According to North Korea Foreign Minister, “Because the United States is about to ignite a nuclear war, we will exercise our rights for preemptive nuclear attacks to destroy the strongholds of the aggressors.” According to The Pentagon and U.S nuclear experts, it will still be several years before North Korea will have a nuclear warhead small enough to be carried by one of its long-range missiles. Some experts also suggested that the technology used in the Unha-3 rocket possesses enough range to impact as far as Alaska and perhaps the West Coast of the United States. But that is not something that threatens the security of the American Public on a major level because it is obvious to the world, even to North Korea, that the United States possesses the technology and full capability to defend itself should the missiles be launched its way. As Senator Bob Menendez (D–NJ) Chairman of Senate Foreign Relations Committee commented earlier Friday, “I don’t think the regime in North Korea is willing to commit suicide by attacking the United States as they must surely know that would be the result.” The current highest priority though, and something that should concern us, worry us even, is the likelihood of North Korea using its nuclear weaponry to cause massive destruction to South Korea. Even the slightest dispute or attack between the two countries at this point could lead to total calamity between East Asian countries, any remaining hopes of 6-party talks will be gone, the long negotiations of the 1953 Korean War Cease Fire Agreement will abruptly end; moreover, if that happens the United States will have to step in with military force due to the 30,000 U.S troops that exist there now and the pledge of support it has made to its ally, South Korea. Given North Korea’s singular standing in the International Community, there is not much possibility for another World War to break out, but there are high possibilities of War happening. Whether it be the “war on terror” or not, all Americans know the consequences of such circumstances and given the United States current deficit and economic crisis, will definitely not want to get into another situation like that of Iraq.

Rebecca Hendricks Red&Black Contributor Starting this week, an Israeli bus company, Afikim, will operate separate bus lines for Jewish settlers and Palestinian Arabs commuting into central Israel to work. This change is a result of safety complaints arising from shared bus routes between the two groups, according to Jewish settlers living in Israeli settlements within the West Bank. Geopolitically, the West Bank fell under Israeli military control as a result of the 1967 6 Day War and has been under military occupation ever since. Zionist Israelis began to establish settlements in the region afterward and the settlements remain a highly contentious issue to this day. Because the West Bank is suffering from high poverty and soaring unemployment, Palestinians are increasingly motivated to find work in Israel. Due to a travel ban between the two states, Palestinian workers must apply for special permits from the Israeli government to work there. Essentially, radical Jews believe based on Old Testament scripture that God instructed the Jews during their exodus from Egypt that this was their chosen land and they must conquer it. These Jewish settlements, which include a settlement town called Gilo, are surrounded completely by the West Bank. Because of tensions between Israeli settlers living on settlements within the West Back and Palestinians living on the Palestinian land surrounding them, there has been a push for racially segregated bus lines. Personally, I think the Jewish settlers are being a bit selfish during hard times. While I understand the reasons behind their drive to conquer land that God designated as theirs, I feel that their settlement camps are too little too late and they should have made more of a push around the 1330 to 1450 BCE era, rather than in recent years. I also think they are being racist towards hardworking Palestinian Arabs who are trying to visit their state legally via work permits to make livings to support their families. In light of the incredible anti-Semitism that swept Europe during the 19 and 20 centuries, I would hope that they would try to purport more respect towards a minority rather than discriminating against them based on which busses the Israeli settlers think they should and should not be allowed to ride. I also think the Israeli settlers pushing for segregated buses ought to explore recent American history in terms of the Montgomery Bus Boycotts and Civil Rights Movement, as well as the resolution of the South African Apartheid racial segregation laws.

Coach Suspended for Tripping Player

Bailey Mudrick Red&Black Staff A Vancouver peewee hockey coach from British Columbia has been sentenced to 15 days in jail, and twelve-year probation for tripping a player during a postgame handshake. Martin Tremblay, 48, swept out the leg of an opposing player while the teams were going through the typical hockey ritual of lining up to shake hands after the game. Two players, a 10year-old and a 13-year-old, fell onto the ice. The incident was recorded on video by someone watching in the stands last summer, and then drew national attention after it was posted online to YouTube. Tremblay reportedly tripped the kid after his team had beaten the victim’s squad, and the boy broke his wrist in the tumble. Tremblay pleaded guilty to one count of assault in November. Richmond provincial court Judge Patrick Chen said he wasn’t
satisfied with the time served in the community it wasn’t enough to denounce or deter Tremblay for his actions. “Win or lose, this was just a game,” Chen told the court, according to newspaper accounts.
It’s horrible, he put in years and years coaching hocky, he out in years and years as a scoutmaster.” —Bellows “This was the last place anyone would have expected an assault to take place, and the very last place one would have expected an adult to assault a child. Chen said Tremblay had abused his position of trust as a coach and compared his move to a “cowardly sucker punch.” What caused this upset? Canada British Columbia stated that Tremblay’s lawyer said
his client suffers from depression and had been off his medication at the time of the incident. But jail time is just the beginning of the problems Tremblay’s trip triggered. Tremblay’s lawyer, Robert Bellows, said in court that the coach’s construction business lost contracts as a result of the incident and that it destroyed his marriage as well, according to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. “He’s rebuilding his life after this incident,” Bellows told reporters outside the courthouse in Richmond, British Columbia, on Tuesday. It was unlikely, Bellows said, that Tremblay would ever coach hockey again. “It’s horrible. He put in years and years coaching hockey, he put in years and years as a scoutmaster,” Bellows empathized with the reporters . “And that all over … because of one incident when he was off his antidepressants for three weeks.”
Rebecca Hendricks Red&Black Staff Where should you go if you’re looking for a good ball game and a cheap beer? Not to a Phoenix Suns game, where the average price of a beer is $9. The Phoenix Suns and the New York Knicks are tied for the
“The cheapest beers are, like at NBA games, $5 and can be found at Cleaveland Brown’s games.” title of most expensive beer during a game. The Suns’ arena website does not list beer options on its website, but it does boast vegetarian friendly sloppy joes. Interestingly, Cork Gaines, a BusinessInsider.com writer notes, “The average cost of a small draft beer at NBA games this season is $7.08.
That is up 1.7% from last season ($6.96). For comparison, the average beer in the NFL is $7.28, in Major League Baseball it is $6.10, and in the NHL the average beer is $7.07.” The cheapest beer costs $5, and is sold at San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder games. Beer at a Pittsburgh Pirates game falls somewhere in the middle, but PNC Park does offer a $48 Beer Passport, which includes a discounted seat in the Pittsburgh Baseball Club Section, a pre-game beer sampling, as well as a $5 credit towards concessions within the stadium. Beer at NFL games is similarly priced, with the most expensive beers being sold for $9 at San Diego Charger and Buffalo Bills games. The cheapest beers are, like at NBA games, $5 and can be found at Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals games. Beer at a Pittsburgh Steelers game also falls in the middle of the price range, with beers costing around $7.50.

Coach Suspended for Forcing Teammates to Fight Ten Players Sent to ECACs

According to a recent report out of Los Angeles, CA, a cheerleading coach has been suspended for allegedly forcing two of her cheerleaders to fight in front of their entire team. Cimone Holloway is a junior at Palisades Charter, a high school in Los Angeles, and told KTLA, a local news station, about the dilemma she was faced with in Jan. of this year. Holloway told KTLA that she alerted her coach to a teammate’s bullying over a fight over a boy, so the coach encouraged them to fight it out before a practice in January, twice. The Palisades Charter High cheerleading coach isn’t mentioned by name, but Holloway accused her coach of turning on music and moving a desk to set the stage for a brawl that resulted in at least one black eye, the report said. “I felt embarrassed and humiliated and ashamed,” said Holloway,
the Palisades Charter junior who explained her side of the incident to KTLA. “I’ve never been in a fight in my life. I didn’t want to fight”. Another cheerleader broke up the fight,” Holloway added. “I thought that it was over and the coach said, ‘Do you guys want
“I felt embarrassed and humiliated and ashamed. I’ve never been in a fight in my life. I didn’t want to fight.” — Cimone Holloway to go another round?’ In that fight, I tripped over my foot and was on the floor and she was on top of me and again punching me. “And sometime during that fight, she kicked me in the forehead.” To make matters worse, Holloway claimed, the coach kept her from cheering in the next game
and had to sit on the sidelines with her black eye. The coach also encouraged her to lie about the incident to her mother, Tonya Humes, and made the remaining cheerleading teammates “pinky-swear” not to tell the secret. Apparently, the first rule of cheerleading fight club is you don’t talk about cheerleading fight club. When Humes contacted the coach via text message, she was told that Cimone “came down from a stunt and caught an elbow,” KTLA reported. The family says a video surfaced of the fistfight, but police refused to take a report because it was apparently not severe enough for the police to log in a report. Humes says she has hired lawyers in an effort to get justice. The Dean alerted Humes via email that the coach has been suspended and administration has intervened, although Holloway has since transferred schools, the report said. Humes states that. “We try at all costs to protect our kids. And then for it to be an adult who hurt her is like wow”.
On Friday March 1 and Saturday March 2, the Washington & Jefferson track and field team took ten competitors to compete in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships. The meet took place at The Armory in New York City. For the men’s side, seniors Gavin Donathan, Jared Jones, and Scott Ryan were the only competitors to qualify. On the women’s side, juniors Cheyenne Mangold, Meghan Poinsett, and Harley Straub were joined by sophomore Kristen Galligan and freshmen Kaleigh Gallagher, Keri Reeves, and Brittney Traynor. Head Coach Shawn Marek was excited with the number of athletes who went. “We doubled the amount of athletes who qualified from last year,” commented Marek. On Friday, the first day of competition, W&J swept the 5,000 meter runs. Ryan and Galligan both claimed first and set new school records. Coach Marek was very happy with the races that Ryan and Galligan ran. “We had two individual champions in the 5K. This is the first time this has ever happened. It was great to win both the men’s and women’s race,” said Marek. Ryan won with a time of 15:08.50. Galligan took the lead from the beginning and never looked back. Her time was 17:04.75. “Scott set a personal best for indoor. Kristin had a really nice race. She set a personal record and was two seconds off of the meet record. Kristen qualified for NCAA nationals with this time,” mentioned Marek. Also competing on Friday was a pair of throwers. Both Donathan and Straub qualified to compete in the shot put. Both of them finished tenth overall. Donthan and Straub both qualified for Indoor ECAC’s for the first time,” explained Marek. Two athletes competed in the 60 meter dash. Jones competed for the men and Traynor for the women. “Both Jared and Brittney competed in the 60 meters and had a solid performance for their first indoor ECAC meet,” said Marek. The last to compete was the distance medley relay. “Finishing out the day was the distance medley relay, comprised of Meghan, Kristen, Kaleigh, and Keri. They ran a solid time and were the first relay team from W&J to qualify,” commented Marek. The only person to compete on Saturday was Mangold. She competed in the 400 meters. “Cheyenne ran to another school record and personal best. She missed qualifying for NCAA nationals by .3 seconds,” said Marek. Marek was pleased with how ECAC’s went and is ready for outdoor to begin. “Overall, ECAC’s was a great meet for everyone. Outdoor begins when the team travels to North Carolina to compete in the Wake Forest meet on March 15th and 16th,” mentioned Marek. The track team will be hosting two home meets this year. Marek wanted to mention the meets and also that the team is looking forward to having great support. “We are hosting two meets, our home invitational on March 31st and the President’s Athletic Conference Championships on April 26th and 27th. We are looking forward to having great fan support for each of those meets,” commented Marek.

Oscar Pistorius’ Unfolding Murder Mystery
Oscar Pistorius, courtesy blacksportsonline.com
Oscar Pistorius, courtesy abcnews.com
Abbey Bashor Red&Black Staff When I heard that Oscar Pistorius was charged with the murder of his girlfriend Reeve Steenkamp, I was beyond shocked. One of the world’s most beloved Olympic athletes was now at the center of a media storm and not for his paraplegic victories. When someone is so wellknown among so many people, when something like this happens it is all the more harder to take in. Now, the high profile murder case underway, many are speculating that this could be the next O.J. Simpson trial and I would have to agree with them. Even though I was very young when the O.J. Simpson trial occurred, the case was so famous and still to this day lives in infamy. There are already some startling similarities too between the two cases, one of which being the behavior of the judge. When Pistorius went in for his bail
hearing on Feb. 22, television networks were told that this hearing would take around 15 minutes. However, nearly two hours later, the hearing was still going strong and the judge was still speaking. Like the O.J. Simpson trial, Judge Desmond Nair knew
“The Pistorius case is without a doubt going to be a media frenzy until the verdict is read.” this was going to be a worldwide spotlight with news camera vying for a glimpse of what was going to be happening in the courtroom. When cases are this high profile, it is not just the athlete that is put in the spotlight, but also everyone involved. It appears to me that the people involved with this trial are more concerned with making their celebrity debut and looking good for the cameras, more so than
caring about having a swift and effective trial. Already, based on the judge’s actions at the bail hearing, we can see where his mind is at, much like Lance Ito from the O.J. Simpson trial. Another similarity between the two cases is the fact that both Simpson and Pistorius are famous athletes. Simpson was a barrier breaking football star and Pistorius, known as Blade Runner, made history by winning a spot at the Summer Olympics in London. I think this is the reason I personally was so fascinated when word of the Pistorius murder first got out. You don’t think about the possibility of someone held in such high regard to be able to do something like this. However, another similarity between the two cases indicates that although the image of Pistorius may be held in high standing, no one really knows the actual man. Both Simpson and Pistorius had a history of domestic violence
before the killings that was previously overlooked. When it comes to being famous, I think that minor infractions with the law are just overlooked. When you are famous and have money, you can get away with anything, and that was the case of the domestic assault. No one thought anything of it and now we are facing a murder
“One of the world’s most beloved Olympic athletes was now at the center of a media storm and not for his paraplegic victories.” trial. I think maybe the most startling comparison between the two cases is the sloppy police work. South Africa had to replace the lead investigator after finding out that he was facing seven
charges after attempted murder. I mean honestly, where do they find these people? The police have also conceded to several other mistakes, including having missed a shell casing in the toilet bowl on which Steenkamp was shot, entering the crime scene without shoe covers (because officers had run out of them), and prematurely identifying a substance found in Pistorius’ bedroom as testosterone. These are mistakes that, in my opinion, should not have happened, and these mistakes once again make me think that they are being careless in their investigations because they only care about the spotlight being put on them. The Pistorius case is without a doubt going to be a media frenzy until the verdict is read and, although I hate to say it, I will probably follow it every step of the way. And although Simpson’s trial ended with an acquittal, it is still uncertain how the Pistorius case will end.
