Rockridge At the foot of the Oakland Hills, Rockridge is a lovely burby-like haven. And with a BART station, Casual Carpool and Transbay Bus stops to downtown San Francisco, it’s one of the most desired neighborhoods in the East Bay. The streets are lined with old-growth trees and appealing pre-war homes. Many are restored Arts and Crafts-style properties that feature wood built-ins, vintage details and expansive gardens. The neighborhood is split into two areas: Lower Rockridge is centered along College Avenue and is home to cafes, shops and high-end restaurants; Upper Rockridge is above Broadway, further up in the hills, offering larger homes, and in many cases, stellar views of the Bay.

WEST OAKLAND Anchored by the fourth largest container seaport in the United States, West Oakland has a strong industrial history. Many of its older homes were built in World Wars I and II. Some home-buyers choose to buy older Victorians and renovate them from the inside out. Others prefer to move into lofts converted from old warehouses. The old and the new coexist, as do artists, young professionals and working families. West Oakland is easily accessible by public transportation including BART and buses. If you are an urban pioneer who is looking to buy somewhere before it really booms, look into West Oakland.

Lake Merritt: Grand lake / Adams point / lakeside / east Lake / Haddon hill LIFESTYLE & DEMOGRAPHICS
Lake Merritt is widely considered the Crown Jewel of Oakland, especially since a $122 million renovation was completed in 2013.
POPULATION
The lake is surrounded by many interesting neighborhoods, each of which has its own unique flavor. Situated at the top, Grand Lake has become one of the most desired areas with its bustling commercial district, historic Grand Lake Theater and small town feel. Counterclockwise is Adams Point which consists of pre-war-style condominium buildings. Lakeside features modern condominium high-rises. East Lake is more eclectic in terms of its residents and restaurants. And Haddon Hill is an increasingly in-demand enclave with small multi-unit buildings.

The charming communities of Crocker Highlands and Trestle Glen are ideal for those who love the cozy comfort of traditional architecture and mature gardens. This woodsy glen has been described as a “Father Knows Best” neighborhood of the 21st century. One of Oakland’s top elementary schools is based here as well. Greenery-lined roads curve past neighborhood parks and lead to a variety of Craftsman, Prairie and Neo-Mediterranean style homes from the ‘20s, ‘30s and ‘40s, many of which were designed by famed architects Julia Morgan and Bernard Maybeck. What’s more, many residents belong to the Lakeshore Homes Association, which is dedicated to preserving the “wonderful natural beauty of the property.”

Nestled amongst the pine trees in the upper Oakland hills, the friendly neighborhoods of Montclair, Merriewood and Piedmont Pines maintain a refreshing and laid-back mountain atmosphere reminiscent of Mill Valley in Marin County. Winding streets dotted with trees and gardens lead to large homes hidden among mini-forests that look out over the distant Bay. Home styles range from large Craftsman bungalows, shingled cottages and Prairie homes, to period revivals, ranch and split-level style homes from the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s. The area’s more modern homes found in parts of Merriewood and Montclair were built in the ’90s and early 2000s. Adding to its rural appeal, the Oakland Hills are tidy and very residential, yet close to many East Bay parks, offering endless hiking, biking and equestrian activities through which visitors can take in the beautiful wooded scenery.

LIFESTYLE & DEMOGRAPHICS

South of Montclair, running along the Oakland Hills, these laid-back neighborhoods back up against fabulous recreational destinations like Redwood Regional and Joaquin Miller Parks, Chabot Space & Science Center and the Oakland Zoo. Highlighting the area’s wooded surroundings, many of the homes are built into the hillside and feature stellar views and lots. Maxwell Park and the adjacent neighborhood of Allendale are quiet and friendly. With small winding streets nestled in the leafy Oakland foothills, they offer a bucolic bungalow lifestyle. Most of the homes in Maxwell Park were built in the ‘30s and ‘40s, and there is a leaning toward modest 2-3 bedroom residences in Spanish, English Tudor and traditional styles. The area uniquely benefits from its proximity to the adjacent 135 wooded acres of Mills College. This historic women’s college, which was established in 1852, is not just picturesque, it offers many cultural opportunities to the public, including concerts and art exhibitions. Residents here can do their shopping in nearby Laurel District, San Leandro, Montclair or the Grand Lake area.

Near the library you’ll find Dimond Park, a lovely wooded area which houses a recreational center offering swimming, tennis and children’s activities. The Laurel is a bright neighborhood with a vibrant and diverse population. A mini-melting pot, the people of the Laurel District are proud to be a part of this distinct section of Oakland, confirmed by all the warm greetings found at Farmer Joe’s, a small local market, and in the wide range of ethnic shops and restaurants along MacArthur Boulevard.
