phil vickery As an old Red it is a great privilege to be invited to write the Foreword to the Club’s new HELLFIRE Magazine.

I have had the good fortune to play Rugby all over the world and to meet some marvellous people, but there is a uniqueness about playing Rugby at the Recreation Ground – and nowhere quite like Hellfire Corner! The backbone of any Rugby Club is the people involved in that Club - players, coaches, members, volunteers and supporters. One of the things that makes Redruth Rugby so special is the loyalty, dedication and hard work of all those involved. That was true long before my playing days at the Rec. It was true when I was there, and it is true to this day. I am sure that it will remain true for many generations to come.

I had the pleasure earlier this year of meeting little Marshall Janson and his Mum and Dad, Stephanie and Moss. This little lad faces a lifetime of struggle and I am delighted to be in a position to help his HANDSTAND Appeal. My Raging Bull clothing company is honoured to be manufacturing and distributing the HANDSTAND Rugby Shirt to raise funds on behalf of his Appeal.

As I said, I have played Rugby all over the world and, even though the game has turned professional, Rugby people can always be relied upon to be decent, friendly and welcoming. Nowhere are those qualities more in evidence than at Redruth Rugby.

Another thing which makes Redruth Rugby so special is the emphasis which the Club places on youth development. I was a product of that youth development system and, over the years, the Club has had a conveyer belt of talent coming through its ranks. Now that we are in the era of professional Rugby, such a conveyer belt is like gold dust. I know that the youth development system at Redruth Rugby is the envy of many Clubs.

It is typical that Redruth Rugby were amongst the first people to offer to help his Appeal and I know that the Club continues to do a great deal to support Marshall and his family. That is very much the Redruth Rugby way. Over the years the Club has done a tremendous amount for local charities, good causes and the local community. That is another of the things that makes the Club so special – that those involved with the Club do so much for the wider community.

Over the off season, the club lost the services of its captain PJ Gidlow, Rob Thirlby, Luke Collins, Dave Roberts and James Mann - all huge players to replace. However, the mood was upbeat and, with the arrival of players like Jamie Semmens, Gareth Evans, Brett Stroud and Fraser Clilverd, hopes were high of matching the previous season’s exploits. Pre season games against Plymouth Albion, both home and away, provided positivity, however, it wasn’t until the season started that we were able to gauge what a challenge was on hand!

Looking forward, the challenges that we face are unknown, many clubs are finding themselves financially strapped and their squads will reflect this, however, within a club like Redruth, whilst the same challenges will be experienced, the infrastructure is strong, the youth set up is second to none and the desire

A solid performances against eventual league winners Esher in September was the highlight of the month and the first win was achieved against Nuneaton at the end of the month. As the season progressed home form was good and that was to be the basis of our achievement in maintaining National 1 status. Overall the season was satisfactory but an improvement in away form must be sought. In total 9 games were lost within 7 points and that was the difference between a top half of the table finish as opposed to 11th. Injuries plagued the team and this coupled with a few departures mid way through the season put a tremendous strain on resources. However, this gave us the opportunity to “blood” some of our promising youngsters and Richie Kevern, Aaron Penberthy and Tom Cowan Dickie all excelled when given the opportunity. The highlight performance of the year for the youngsters was undoubtedly the Super Cup Final 2nd Leg at Redruth where they overturned

NATIONAL ONE FIXTURES 2010/11 The fixture list for the coming season is the most mouth watering for many years. Three of London’s most famous clubs: Rosslyn Park, Blackheath and London Scottish will be visiting the Recreation Ground and, for the first time in 20 years, the Midland giants, Coventry, will be back at Redruth. Additionally, we shall be hosting Cornwall’s largest National League1 game when we shall be locking horns with our old adversaries Launceston just before Christmas. Just to keep the Christmas spirit flowing, the oldest fixture in the county, Redruth versus Camborne, will follow soon after and will be sure to draw a massive crowd. Please note that the match is being played on Bank Holiday Monday - 27 December - not Boxing Day. As we move in to the New Year we shall be welcoming Stourbridge on March 5th, St Pirans Day. It’s many year’s since we have had a home fixture on St Piran’s Day and we plan to make it a real day of Celtic celebration with entertainment starting early in the morning in the ground and continuing until late in the clubhouse.

1. Redruth RFC was founded in 1875 and originally played on the Brewery Leats which is now the site for Tesco. 2. The Reds have produced 4 British Lions, 10 full England Internationals and 15 Barbarians. 3. Three Reds players have captained England: Richard Sharp, Dr Keith Scott and Phil Vickery, a product of Redruth Colts. 4. The Recreation Ground is regarded as the home of Cornish rugby and Hellfire Corner is known all over the world where rugby is played. When Phil Vickery was interviewed on the England team bus as they paraded the World Cup around London to a fantastic reception from hundreds of thousands of adoring fans he was asked if he had ever experienced anything like this before. “Only in Hellfire Corner at Redruth” was his reply. 5. Twenty five thousand people crammed in to the Recreation Ground when Cornwall played Lancashire in the County Championship final in 1969. 6. The Recreation Ground Redruth, before the professional era, was the second largest rugby ground in England and for many years was known as the “Twickenham of the West”. 7. The national teams of New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, France, Tonga, Argentina and Japan have all played at Redruth and heard the Hellfire. roar.. 8. The Reds have entertained many famous clubs at the Recreation Ground including Bristol, Bath, Gloucester, Cardiff, Swansea and Llanelli. 9. No fewer than 22 ex Reds colts represented the first team in National League Division 1 and Cup games last season. 10. Eight ex Reds Colts played for Cornwall in the Bill Beaumont County Championship last season.

An Evening with Rick Stein raises almost £20,000 A fundraising dinner at the Royal Cornwall Showground raised almost £20,000 for Youth Development at the Club and Marshall Janson’s HANDSTAND Appeal. 180 people attended the black tie event, sponsored by Midas, and enjoyed a meal prepared by Rick Stein’s team of chefs from The Seafood Restaurant in Padstow. The event was compered by Matt Dawson and the former England & British Lions star and current BBC ‘Question of Sport’ captain was joined by Rugby legends Keith Wood, Simon Easterby and Nick Beal. Earlier in the day Marshall and his Mum and Dad, Stephanie and Moss, met the rugby celebrities at Rick Stein’s restaurant in Padstow. Said Stephanie, “We were thrilled to meet Rick and the famous rugby players. Everyone was so kind to us and we are so grateful to them for giving up their time to help Marshall.” Proceeds from the evening have been shared between the HANDSTAND Appeal and Redruth Rugby. Explained Dave Penberthy, Redruth’s director of rugby, “Our association with the HANDSTAND Appeal is very important to the Club, as is the development of our young players, so both causes will benefit greatly as a result of the evening’s fundraising effort.” The evening’s fundraising included two auctions of sporting merchandise and memorabilia, including HANDSTAND rugby shirts signed by the rugby stars and rugby balls provided by Phil Vickery’s Raging Bull clothing company and personally signed by the former Reds legend. Commented Gerry Reilly, the Club’s new General Manager, who continues to act as co-ordinator of the HANDSTAND Appeal, “It

They bring big physical presence and outstanding leadership on the field, which will be of massive benefit to some of the younger lads around them in the squad for next season.” He went on to confirm that Mark Bright would be part of a new coaching structure, following the departure of head coach Nigel

Hambly. Craig Bonds will be attack coach, Tony Cook defence coach, Terry Pryor front-row and scrum coach, while Mark will be forwards coach, concentrating on line-outs and moves. Nigel Eslick has taken over as team manager from Adrian Edwards. The Club will have most of last year’s squad returning but have been boosted by the return of second row Luke Collins after a year away with the Cornish Pirates. Other new signings include winger Sean Hawkey from Wadebridge Camels, prop Ashley

Morcom from Newquay Hornets and, from Truro, winger Sam Newman and fly half/centre Grant Thirlby. “There may be further additions to the squad”, added David Penberthy, “for while we have a good blend of youth and experience, we probably have our toughest fixture list ever with games against London Scottish, Rosslyn Park, Blackheath, Coventry and, of course, Launceston. We are going to need strength in depth.”

The Club begins its league campaign on 04 September at home to Wharfedale and has arranged four pre season friendlies: home to St Ives on 14 August; home to Taunton on 21 August; away to St Ives on 24 August; away to Dings Crusaders on 28 August.

FOR FEVER FINAL On March 8th 1969 all roads led to Redruth. They came from Penzance and Launceston, from Wadebridge and St Ives. Thousands of ex-Pats came home from all over Great Britain and some even came home from New Zealand and Australia. Cornwall were playing at home in the County Championship Final for the first time in 60 years. By 6.30 am supporters had begun to queue outside the ground amid rumours that when the ground was full the gates would be closed for safety reasons. By 11am the queues stretched all the way along North St to Avers roundabout and up Drump Road. At noon the gates opened and fans poured through to see that the Redruth club had done the county proud. A 300ft temporary stand ran the whole length of the pitch on the East Bank and towered

over the ground. The old changing rooms at the scoreboard end had been demolished and the banking raised to provide standing for an extra 4,000. Fore St was a sea of banners and every shop was decorated in Cornish colours. Giant pasties were being paraded around the ground and hung from the cross bars and Mr Delves arrived with his monkey which climbed the posts. No one knows exactly how big the attendance was that day but the crowd was estimated at 25,000 an hour before kick off. Apart from Twickenham, no other rugby ground in England had a capacity of over 10,000 at this time and Redruth fully deserved its nickname “ The Twickenham of the West”. Cornish anthems resounded around the ground Ball Boys - David Penberthy standing 3rd from the left

but they were temporarily drowned out by an enormous crescendo of noise as the Cornwall took the field with a special cheer from Hell Fire for local legend Bonzo Johns making his 88th and final appearance for the county. Sadly, the occasion proved too much for three spectators who died of heart attacks during the game leading to the headline next day, “Three Die in Fever Final”. In conditions more suited to cricket than rugby, Cornwall roared in to a first half lead of 9-0 and expectations were high. The second half belonged to Lancashire as their backs ably supported by England flankers Dick Greenwood and Tony Neary looked more and more dangerous. Lancashire went ahead 11-9 but Cornwall could have won the game if they had converted an earlier penalty from 30 yards. The kick was taken by Reds skipper, Raymond George, who had played the game of his life, but as he started his run up the ball fell over and the chance had gone. Lancashire had won but the real winner was rugby union football. Redruth had hosted a game of outstanding passion and excitement with an attendance unheard of outside Twickenham. Spectators in the deep south west had been able to see proven International players, at the top of their game, demonstrating the skills that had made them household names and another chapter was written in the legend of Redruth, the home of Cornish rugby.

JUNIORS The Juniors had another successful season, with large numbers in each age group showing the continuing popularity of rugby at Redruth. Under the management of Chris Jose the under 13’s were successful on their first season on a full size pitch. They won the County Plate and were runners up in the County Sevens. Coached by club veterans Stuart Whitworth and Adrian Rutter, the under 14’s had a very successful season at junior level, winning the County Cup at 15 a side, and they were runners up at 7 a side.

The under 15s had yet another successful season. Semi-finalists in the cup, thirteen of the squad represented Cornwall against Devon and Somerset. They also won against visiting teams from Leicestershire, Devon and Somerset. Next year the team will be coached again by Chris Allen, who will be joined by Jamie Tressider. The under 16’s also had a successful season, losing narrowly in the semi final of the cup to Truro, who then went on to win the final by 40 points. They also won the County Sevens tournament. The team,coached by Leon Pohe, supplied ten players to the county under 16’s team. Two of the players will be joining Leicester Tigers’ academy, another will join London Irish, and two more will play at Exeter - a great achievement and reward for all their efforts.

Next year’s junior squad will have over 130 players, the largest in the county, but we are still open to new members joining us. The Minis (age 7-12) continue to grow from strength to strength with good numbers (over 100 members) and continued success. This year we had 27 new boys join the under 7’s age group, which was fantastic. The squad are coached by Shaun Maddern and they reached the semi final of the Bath Festival. The under 8’s are coached by David Wills and Rob Churchill. They have also had a good season and reached the final of the Bath Festival in April.

The under 9’s are coached by Chris Sidwell, and they are the most prolific scorers in the club, with over 300 tries this season. They have won the County Cup and Weston Invitation Tournament. Coached by Jeff Kitto, the under 10’s were very unlucky losing out on the County Final on the toss of a coin but they made it to the semi-finals of the Bath Festival. The under 11’s were County Champions for the third year in succession. Next year the squad will be managed by Adrian Grigg. This year the team made it to the semi-finals at the Bath Festival beating Wasps on the way. The under 12’s are coached by Phil Olds, they had a great season sharing the County Cup with

Camborne and reaching the final at the Bath Festival. Although we enjoy the success, the main emphasis is on fun and development. Each age group has a RFU qualified coach/s with the coaching overseen by Phil Olds, our coaching co-ordinator, who also coaches the successful Trewergie School tag rugby teams. The teams train on Friday nights 67pm and play on Sunday mornings, and they also play at half time at first team games on a Saturday. MARSHALl’s story In September 2009 the club decided to “adopt” Marshall Janson and elect him Honorary Junior Vice President. This is why... Marshall Janson, from Carharrack, near Redruth, celebrated his first birthday on 22 December 2008. On Boxing Day, Marshall was rushed into hospital following an attack of Meningococcal Meningitis. Meningitis is a brutal and unforgiving disease. Dr Thys De Beer, Head of Intensive Care at Treliske Hospital stated, “Marshall is the sickest child I have ever seen. His survival is almost a miracle.”

16 years it is estimated, therefore, that the costs involved will be between £850,000-£950,000. Obviously, the cost of providing Marshall with a decent quality of life is quite breathtaking - and considerably beyond the resources of Marshall’s family or, indeed, most families. It is because of the huge cost involved that the family launched HANDSTAND - The Appeal for Marshall Janson.

The Appeal was launched on 05 March 2009 and the response has been astonishing. In July of this year the Appeal reached £200,000. “To have raised this amount of money in 15 months is amazing”, said Moss Janson, Marshall’s Dad. “Marshall’s plight seems to have brought out the best in people. The Cornish are renowned for looking after their own and that is certainly the case with Marshall. So many people have ‘adopted’ him, taken him to their hearts, and done extraordinary things to raise funds on his behalf. We are grateful beyond words for their support and kindness.” Marshall, now two-years-old, despite everything he has been through, remains a very happy little boy but his struggles seem endless and daunting. As recently as May he had to undergo further surgery, during which surgeons had to trim the bone on his right leg, causing Marshall terrible pain and discomfort. Doctors have not ruled out further surgery. “We just have to soldier on and do our best for him”, said Mum Stephanie. “What sustains us is

that we are not alone, though. So many people have done so much for Marshall. He has a long, hard road ahead of him and we still have a financial mountain to climb but we have more hope now than we did a year ago. And, of course, we still have Marshall. We came very close to losing him, so every day is a blessing.”

HELLFIRE Magazine asked the Club’s General Manager, Gerry Reilly, to explain the thinking behind this initiative. The Club is fortunate in having hundreds of loyal members. ‘More Than Just A Rugby Club’ recognises this and it is what has motivated the development of a number of initiatives which we believe will benefit our membership and reward them for their loyalty. The new Membership Scheme, as reported elsewhere in the Magazine, means that our members will benefit from cheaper prices in the Clubhouse, and discounts and special offers from key suppliers participating in the Scheme. Our ‘Introduce a Friend’ Scheme means that our members will receive £50 for every friend whom they introduce to membership of the Club. And, let’s not forget that membership rates have been held at last year’s prices – so, all in all, we think that we have added significant value to being a member of the Club.

The Wider Community Redruth Rugby already does a great deal in the community, much of which goes unrecognised because the Club, historically, has not been good at ‘blowing its own trumpet’. As reported elsewhere in the Magazine, the Club’s youth development activity sees hundreds of youngsters, week in and week out, participating in the mini, junior and Colts teams, and enjoying the associated benefits of participating in organised team sports, while learning the value of hard work, discipline and teamwork. Meanwhile, the Academy at Redruth School, as again is reported elsewhere, is an absolute beacon as a centre of excellence in the community.

Nor should the charitable work which the Club does be forgotten. This again is reported elsewhere but it is worth noting that the many thousands of pounds which the Club has raised over the years has, typically, been directed towards supporting local charities and good causes. Finally, the contribution which the Club makes to the local economy is not insignificant. Bringing and maintaining National Division One Rugby to Redruth brings visitors to the town with the consequent benefit to local business. The Club has reason to be proud of the above record of achievement, however, we think that there is more that can be done. We are working hard to develop links with the wider community through Redruth Town Council, the Redruth North Community Partnership and CPR Regeneration. In promoting Redruth Rugby as ‘More Than Just A Rugby Club’, we are saying that the Club is open to all and that our facilities can be made available to community groups, associations, societies and other interest groups. Good Company Shortly after we decided to launch ‘Redruth Rugby – More Than Just A Rugby Club’ we discovered that Barcelona Football Club had adopted a similar slogan, ‘FC Barcelona – Mes Que Un Club’ (‘More than a Club’). To be fair, they got there first - but it’s nice to know that we are in good company!

Reds legends The club has produced 10 International players in total, and the period from the 1930s to the 1960s is regarded as the period when Redruth established itself as one of the leading and most respected clubs in the country. Many Reds players may well have played for England during this period if they had been to the right school and then to Oxbridge or played for one of the leading London clubs or for Gloucester, Bristol or Leicester. Players of the calibre of Faviell, Semmens, Stevens, Abrahams, McGovern and Pryor could have played for England. Three players most definitely should have played for England and they are ROY JENNINGS, BILL PHILLIPS AND BONZO JOHNS. These three, as much as any others, set the benchmark for what a Redruth player should be. Hard, fair and totally uncompromising as a player, magnanimous in victory and defeat, and with a good sense of humour and a wish to enjoy the social side of rugby to the full. ROY JENNINGS GOOD ENOUGH FOR THE LIONS BUT NOT FOR ENGLAND Roy was educated at Taunton School and first played for Redruth as a wing forward before moving to centre. He played 61 times for Cornwall and was selected for England trials in 1929, 1931 and 1932 but never gained the International cap he so richly deserved. He played for representative teams against the All Blacks, Springboks, New South Wales and the New Zealand Maoris. The British Lions recognised his full worth, and he was selected for F.D.Prentice’s Lions team . Roy was a colossus for the Reds and was a tremendous club man living life in the fast lane both on and off the pitch. He was a prodigious kicker regularly kicking goals from within his own half. There are still a few around who remember his high knee action reminiscent of Andy Ripley in the 1970s as he went charging through the opposition. It is not a coincidence that he sent his winger Harry Faviell in for 63 tries in one

season, still a club record. A fitting epitaph comes from a South African journalist who watched Roy at this time: “I have seen the All Blacks, Springboks, Wallabies, Ireland, France and the British Isles come to South Africa and I can honestly say that Roy Jennings is the finest player I have ever seen on a rugby field. He is the complete master; a superb and determined tackler, a magnificent attacker and a great kicker of the ball. Modern rugby has no centre to equal him.” BILL PHILLIPS REGARDED AS THE TOP FORWARD IN BRITAIN BUT NOT BY ENGLAND SELECTORS In the Cornwall RFU’s centenary magazine “ The First 100 Years”, edited by Tom Salmon, Bill Phillips is referred to as “one of the best forwards never to play for England and, arguably, the most loved player to play for Redruth.” Bill, a man of enormous charisma, bestrode the club like a giant for over 40 years, as a player for 24 years and then as a selfless administrator. He would certainly have played for England had his best years not been taken by the war years. He ended up playing his best rugby in his 30s in the immediate post war years. He played for Cornwall and Devon against the touring Kiwis in 1946 and they issued a press release upon their departure where they stated that the player they really looked forward to welcoming to New Zealand in future years for England and the Lions was “the big Cornish farmer Phillips”. Senior national journalists referred to Bill as one of the best players in the land. The call did not come from England but Bill was approached concerning his availability for Wales. He decided to take his chance with England. No less a person than Richard Sharp in his autobiography, “Winning Rugby” has this to say of Bill when watching him as a schoolboy: “In that first game and in every game thereafter, he seemed to bestride the field like a giant; there was nothing he could not do. It was he who provided the shove in the scrum; he who caught

the ball in the lineout, scored the tries, kicked the penalties, punched the opposing forwards and made the tackles” BONZO JOHNS 13 TRIALS FOR ENGLAND BUT NO CAP When you see Bonzo in the enclosure at home games these days, an affable giant of a man, who still looks remarkably like he did when he played with such distinction for Cornwall and Redruth some 50 years ago, it is difficult to realise that he was one of the most fearsome players in the land. Bonzo first played for Redruth at the age of 16 and was a first team regular for the next 23 years. He played 88 times for Cornwall, went on the Barbarians’ prestigious tour to Wales, and played for representative teams against the All Blacks, Springboks, Australia and Canada. He had 13 England trials and was reserve for England on two occasions but did not gain the cap he so richly deserved. He was a player of enormous strength and few will forget the titanic struggles he had for Cornwall against Gloucestershire, against a pack which regularly contained 5 or 6 current Internationals. It was appropriate that it was the Gloucester pack who chaired Bonzo from the field in his last game against the old foe. Like so many players before him, Bonzo worked selflessly as an administrator for club and county after retirement. The author was lucky enough to follow Bill Beaumont’s 1980 Lions in South Africa and one night fell in with a fanatical group of Welsh fans in Durban. “Where do you come from?” they asked. “Redruth” I replied. “ Bonzo Johns, 13 England trials. Unluckiest player never to play for England !” they shouted in unison.

£53,000 raised in last 5 years I was privileged to do the presentation for the Trust this year and was amazed to see the number of clubs there from the Redruth area. You tend to get caught up in the Redruth Rugby bubble and think we are the only organization in the town but there were clubs present from all sorts of disciplines. The work of the Trust is fantastic and the challenge of raising money at the current time is a challenge and a half to say the least. Indeed it is difficult enough for clubs to source kit and equipment in normal times but having the Trust working with them helps to ensure that members are able to have the best equipment and kit to give them the opportunity to excel within their chosen areas. The Trust has provided the Reds Minis and Juniors with almost £6,000 worth of kit over the last 5 years for which we are extremely grateful. GR: Your association with the Club goes back a long way?

DP: It certainly does! I became junior vice president at the age of 6 and a ball boy at the age of 9. I made my Colts debut in 1971 aged 14. We beat Falmouth 99-3 that day and I scored a conversion! I went onto play 701 games for the club making my first XV debut in 1976 against Exeter University.

GR: So, it’s a real family Club?

GR: When did you move into management? DP: I became Team Manager in 2002 and I was absolutely full of enthusiasm, then I had to move to Taunton because of work. So, I thought that I had better offer to resign. My resignation was never accepted and in nine years I have missed only three games.

DP: Very much so and the tradition is carrying on. My lad Aaron made his first team debut last season, my daughter is a big supporter of the Club and, of course, my brother-in-law, Nigel Hambly, just stepped down as Head Coach. My wife, too, has been a huge supporter of the Club. GR: How would you describe your feelings for the Club? DP: It is a huge part of me and of my life. I lost my Dad in 2001 and it’s when I am at the Club that I feel closest to him, so there is a massive emotional attachment. I desperately want the Club to be successful – and to win – whether it’s the under 7’s or the first team.

GR: Three home games? DP: No, three games total out of 250 home and away – and two of those was because I was in South Africa watching my son play cricket! I became Rugby Manager in 2004, then Director of Rugby in 2006, then Chairman of the Executive Committee in 2008.

GR: What makes the Club so special?

DP: I just love it. The attitude of the people involved, their friendliness, the camaraderie. I have met and played with some fantastic people – Graham Still, Paul Thomason, Phil Elliot, Adrian Curtis, Kenny Harris – to name only a handful. The Club has a terrific Rugby ethos, with its emphasis on youth. It is no place for people looking for an easy life but it is absolutely somewhere where ability and hard work is recognised. That, I think, helped us pick up the gauntlet when the new league structure was introduced and it is that desire which has allowed us to be competitive.

DP: On the field, further improvement. Off the field, financial stability.

GR: What would you say are your biggest achievements?

GR: So, would you be optimistic or pessimistic about reaching the Championship?

DP: Over the last 7-8 years bringing through, with Nigel, the best crop of home-grown talent the Club has ever had, culminating in finishing third in National League One. At the same time, bringing in unbelievable talent like James Lancaster, Bede Brown, Dan Goodwin, PJ, Brighty – but having them absorb the ethos and culture of the Club – and become part of that ethos and culture. Another highlight was beating Launceston in the 2003 Cup Final, when nobody gave us a prayer. And, of course, I would have to say Aaron making his first team debut – and becoming the youngest scorer in league history. GR: What are the challenges facing the Club?

GR: Shall we start with financial stability? DP: That’s easy – that’s your job! GR: No pressure then. So, on the field? DP: We have to maintain our Division One status and aspire to take the Club higher than ever before so, by definition, that means higher than third in National Division One.

DP: I am neither an optimist nor a pessimist, I am a realist. I worry that the game, certainly financially, is being taken away by the Premiership and Championship. The financial challenge to compete at that level is now colossal. Geography is an issue. Travel costs are huge. The demands on the players are huge. The lads who started coming through in 2002 are now in the twilight of their careers and we are having to throw some young lads in at the deep end. GR: Is the Championship a step too far, then? DP: The financial pressures possibly mitigate against it but, competitively, if we want to improve, there is only one way to go. GR: Up? DP: Up!

GR: What got you involved with the Club in the first place? DP: My Mum and Dad. My Mum served on the Ladies’ Committee for 30 years and my Dad was

Said David Penberthy, Director of Rugby, “I am delighted for Peter. This recognition is richly deserved for the enormous amount of hard work which he has put in this season. Peter is also a product of our youth development system. He has represented the Club at every level and this is great testimony to our coaches at mini, junior, colt and 1st XV level. There was an emotional farewell at the event for Head Coach Nigel Hambly, who has stepped down after eight years in the role. In a speech which mixed humour and emotion Hambly described Redruth

Rugby as, “The only Club where a player should want to play.” He added, “It’s a great Club, with great players, great coaches and great supporters.” Hambly received the AJ Paul & Co ‘Club Person of the Year Award’ and was presented with a silver salver, bought by the players, in recognition of his services to the Club. Recognition was also given to Lewis Vinnicombe who received a special award as top try scorer, and who was also voted Supporters’ Player of the Year.

The retirements of Adrian Edwards and Dr Roly Joseph were also marked with awards. Commented Roger Watson, Honorary Secretary, “We are very grateful to Adrian and Dr Joseph for their many years of service to the Club. One of the great strengths of the Club is the small army of volunteers who serve us so loyally and so well, so it was a great opportunity to recognise two marvellous servants of the Club.”

The FHS can be reserved as a whole, to seat 40, or partitioned to accommodate two parties of 20, or booked for individual tables of 10. Prices start at £500 for a table of 10 and, in addition to a three course meal, each party of 10 will receive a welcome drink on arrival, 5 bottles of wine and 20 cans of beer/lager. “Maybe people won’t see much of the action after they’ve had that lot!”, added Gerry Reilly. The catering in the FHS is being provided by Barnett Fare, a family run, Cornish firm with 29 years experience of outside catering, whose clients include the Royal Cornwall Showground and the Bodmin & Wenford Railway. “Their sample menus are just mouth-watering”, commented Gerry Reilly. “Corporate Hospitality is big business these days and, thanks to Frame UK, we are going to be able to offer something special at the Recreation Ground, opening up a completely different experience for those using the FHS and an additional revenue stream for the Club.”

It came as no surprise to the cognoscenti amongst Reds supporters when Mark Bright announced that he had Cornish ancestors. Surely a player that good must have Cornish blood in him! In fact, Mark’s great great grandmother Catherine Michell came from Zennor. Her father John Michell was a tin miner at Wheal Margery. Catherine married Peter Allen and emigrated to Southland, New Zealand in the latter part of the 19th century. She was to have 16 children. Mark made his debut for the Reds, fresh off the plane from New Zealand, against Cambridge in October 2006 and immediately brought gasps of admiration from the grandstand with his power, pace and ball skills. He was to score 23 tries for the Reds that season, a record for a forward. In total he has now made 89 appearances for

respected in the league by the opposition, this being proven in his selection by other coaches for the Rugby Times National 1 Dream Team on no less than 4 occasions in the last 4 years. The club are fortunate to have his services from the beginning of the season this year as he takes a well earned rest through the summer months after playing non stop rugby for the last 6 years. I would go as far as saying that Mark is probably the best signing the club has made.”

His influence over the team and his overall contribution have been immense and on many occasions he has been the difference between Redruth and the opposition.

Mark is settled in Cornwall with his wife Angela, who teaches locally, and his children Bailey and Campbell. The club is delighted that for season 2010-2011 he will be combining his playing duties with being the club’s forwards coach.

These performances are all the more praiseworthy in that, for the last 6 years, Mark has returned to New Zealand to play top flight rugby for Tasman Makos and Nelson Bays NPC in the Air New Zealand Cup during the English summer. In effect, playing continuous rugby all this time. Director of Rugby, David Penberthy, has this to say about our Cornish Kiwi: “After signing Mark, when I was in Lanzarote on holiday back in 2006, I knew we were signing a good player, but I didn’t know how good he would turn out to be! His influence over the team and his overall contribution have been immense, and on many occasions he has been the difference between Redruth and the opposition. The word “injury” is not in the Bright dictionary and in 4 seasons Mark has only missed 2 games. Mark certainly leads from the front and is widely

charities The Club has a long tradition of supporting charities and good causes. Wherever possible we try to support local charities. Hence our decision last year to ‘adopt’ little Marshall Janson and his HANDSTAND Appeal. Marshall, from Carharrack, faces a lifetime of struggle following a devastating attack of meningitis, resulting in the loss of all four of his limbs.

The Club is committed to supporting other charities too, none more so than Pedley’s People. After illness and surgery for breast cancer in 2000, Brenda Pedley set up a fundraising team of family and friends to raise money for cancer treatment and research. Brenda, wife of Colts’ chairman Alan, has raised a staggering £70,000.

The Club is also proud that our efforts have helped Precious Lives, Cancer Research, Help for Heroes and Lonely Paws. Last season’s half time bucket collections raised over £5,000 and, in addition to the charities already mentioned, other beneficiaries included Redruth Charitable Trust, Cornwall Air Ambulance and Redruth Town Band.

Drug And Alcohol Abuse

People suffering from disability are particularly welcome at the club. There are several reserved parking spaces at the club adjacent to the clubhouse and enclosure in front of the grandstand, and we have wheelchair access to the main bar and disabled toilet facilities.

The club is very aware of its responsibilities towards the younger people within the club especially among the members of the junior teams and colts. It has a nil tolerance towards drugs. As far as alcohol is concerned, rugby is a social sport, and having a pint after a game with your friends and opponents is part of the social aspect of the game. Where members are of a legal age moderate drinking is encouraged, but alcohol abuse is never condoned.

Equal Opportunities And Discrimination The club stands for equal opportunities for all its members, employees and supporters and is totally averse to any form of discrimination either on gender, age, religion or race. In what many perceive to be a male oriented sport women make a massive contribution to the success of the club, managing the club’s catering facilities, as well as filling strategic positions in the supporters club and on the Sponsorship and Fund Raising teams. Girls are always welcome in the mini and junior sections and there will be girls teams in the Rugby Academy run in partnership with Redruth School. The club has a nil tolerance policy as far as racial discrimination or abuse is concerned and any member or supporter not adhering to this policy will be banned from the club sine die.

In order to obtain the best possible guidance for our young players the club is working with the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Drug and Alcohol Action Team who will commission two specialist drug and alcohol trainers to develop an information and education programme appropriate for use with young people in sports settings. The programme will be appropriate to age and will cover the use of tobacco, alcohol and illegal drugs. It is proposed to pilot the programme with Redruth Rugby club during the coming season with the intention of rolling out the programme in the future to sports clubs across the county.

At the end of the 2008-2009 season, the Colts completed five consecutive U17 Cup wins and it was decided to concentrate all our energies in 20092010 in winning five consecutive U18 Cups, which no one had achieved before, as well as participating in the Under 19 National Cup.

The first big test for the boys was the National Cup at Torquay in September and we found a way to squeak home by 15 points to 12.Unfortunately, it was at this time that we learned that our England prop Malcolm Hearn’s knee injury would rule him out for the rest of the campaign. This was a blow but in Will Webster and Peter Jenkin we had two exceptional replacements.. The boys regrouped and won their first three U18 cup matches convincingly before playing exceptionally to see off Brixham 27-0 in the next round of the National Cup. It was then that the

weather intervened and almost ruined our season. November was almost a complete washout with no matches for four weeks and, more importantly, the rain preventing the quality training that needs to be accomplished to achieve success. We were drawn at Ivybridge in the National Cup and, after two postponements, on 6th December we eventually played. A month off showed in our rustiness as we lost. Ivybridge were a good side but it was a case of what might have been. The exit from theU19 National Cup

before Christmas left our third year colts with very little meaningful rugby but that did not stop Adam Lewarne from giving his total commitment and input and Adam’s reward was to receive his full County Senior debut against Devon in the Tamar Cup. Richard Kevern had already represented the senior County team and he added to his accomplishments by starting several games for the Redruth first team in their fixtures in April. Indeed, Roger replaced Aaron Penberthy at fly half. following his promotion to the first team. Aaron, along with Ben Gregor and James Texeira represented the South West with James captaining the division.

Wadebridge and Truro. A home semi- final brought a hat-trick of tries for Ben Gregor against Penryn and we had one more obstacle to overcome against Truro. This we did on April 25 by 12-6, despite our best efforts to throw the game away. We had achieved our number one goal. Colts champions again. Five consecutive times to go with our five U19 wins between 1998 and 2002. The Colts still continue to produce a wealth of talent for the club. As well as the players already mentioned above, the likes of Lewis Moyle who had the most magnificent year, Michael Allen, Matthew Bunt, Nathan Strick, John Jackson, Dean Bonds, Jack Churcher, Craig Williams, and Shaun Buzza have outstanding ability. It will be up to the boys to they have the dedication, perseverance, desire and mental strength to fulfil their potential.

Domestically, we ground out victories against Liskeard and Newquay, avenged what was to be our only loss in the U18 Cup competition against Penzance, before cutting loose and convincingly despatching

Special in terms of the people involved with the Club and special because of the Club’s philosophy. From those early days, William Rogers Insurance Brokers and Redruth Rugby have worked closely together to our mutual benefit. The thing which has always impressed me about Redruth Rugby is the friendliness of the people and the warmth of the welcome. There is a great atmosphere at the Club and win, lose or draw, tremendous camaraderie amongst the players, coaches, management and supporters. The game may have turned professional but there is still a sense at the Club of rich tradition, old fashioned values, and an emphasis on doing things properly. The game has turned professional, however, and Redruth Rugby, like every rugby club in the land, faces enormous financial pressures. That is why sponsorship is so important to the Club and why, on both a personal and professional basis, I am happy to support the Club through sponsorship. In many respects, I am content to do my bit to help the Club without necessarily seeking a return. Sponsorship, like a lot of sales and

marketing activity, is not an exact science. It can be difficult to identify and quantify the return on the investment. Having said that, I get a real sense that the Club has embraced the need to step up to the mark commercially and, for a sponsor, it is good to feel that my contribution is being put to good use. Elsewhere in the HELLFIRE Magazine (a great initiative), there is reference to a number of significant developments at the Club which I think are to be warmly applauded: the appointment of a General Manager; the launch of the ‘Redruth Rugby – More than just a Rugby Club’ campaign; the Club’s new Membership Scheme; the Club’s new website; the creation of the Frame UK Hospitality Suite. All of this suggests to me that the Club is heading in the right direction – off the field, as well as on it. To have National Division One rugby at Redruth is a great achievement and testimony to enormous hard work by players, coaches and officials. On the field the Club has punched above its weight. It would be great to see it doing likewise off the field. This season, for the first time, my company’s name will appear on the Club’s playing shirt. I cannot wait to see the lads take to the field in that shirt. I will be watching with a tremendous sense of pride.

With a collective age of 507, the legendary ‘Wednesday Gang’ are a remarkable example of how fortunate Redruth Rugby is in benefitting from the tremendous support of a small army of volunteers. In the first of a series of articles about those volunteers, HELLFIRE Magazine met some of the Gang.

As it turns out, ‘Wednesday Gang’ is a bit misleading because the Gang are at the Club on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays! They do much of the essential work behind the scenes which is often taken for granted but without which the Club could not function. From painting, decorating and ground maintenance, through to preparation for match days, operating the scoreboard and traffic management, the Gang are a vital part of the Club’s operation, while also saving the Club thousands of pounds. At 62 Richard Green is the youngest of the Gang, “and the best looking”, he claims. “The rest of them call me ‘Tea Boy’!” Asked why they do so much for the Club, two of the Gang offered contrasting views. “To get away from the wife”, suggested Redmond Toy (76). Eldred Mannell, also 76, on the other hand, was “looking for a woman”. Becoming more serious, all the Gang members agreed that they enjoyed the company and the camaraderie, though Richard couldn’t

resist adding that sometimes it was like an episode of ‘Last of the Summer Wine’. The work that the Gang does is not without its hazards. Drilling a hole while erecting an advertising board, Eldred managed to drill through Redmond’s hand. “He shouldn’t be allowed out sometimes”, says Redmond. “He should have moved his hand”, retorts Eldred. Missing on the day that the photograph was taken were two of the mainstays of the Gang, Denzil Peters (77), and Roy Jennings, the oldest member of the Gang at 86. “Nobody’s really in charge”, says Eldred, “but Denzil likes to think he is.” “You better not put that in the article, though”, he adds. [Editor’s Note - sorry Eldred!] Behind all the banter is the Gang’s tremendous feeling of pride in the Club. Two of the Gang played for the Club, several of them travel to away matches to support the Club, and the Gang’s association with the Club in some instances goes back to boyhood. “We are proud

of the Club”, says Redmond, “very proud indeed. We like to think that doing our little bit helps the Club”, adds Eldred. “Doing our little bit”. What an understatement. Rain, hail or shine, the Wednesday Gang are at the Club, week in and week out, making an invaluable contribution to keeping the Club going. Commented Club Secretary, Roger Watson, “We are very fortunate in having a small army of volunteers who support the Club and without whom the Club could not function, none more so than the Wednesday Gang. acadEmy The Community Sports Coaching Project is an innovative community partnership between Roddas, Redruth School and Redruth Rugby, with support from Sport England and the Cornwall Sports Partnership. While the ‘jewel in the crown’ is the Redruth Rugby Academy, based at Redruth School, coach Steve Kenward works with schools throughout the area. Following Steve’s recent visit to Highfield School, head teacher Mary Haddy commented, “All the pupils who took part really enjoyed the afternoon with Steve. The pupils got a great deal out of it.” She added, “ As a neighbour of Redruth Rugby Club we have enjoyed building our relationship with them over the last few years. We have a sponsorship board at the ground and we like to do our bit for the Club and the local community.” The Redruth Rugby Academy aims are to provide pupils with a player pathway in rugby, along with an academic structure at the school to aid future career prospects. The Academy is for any players wanting to develop their performance, whether it is to play for Redruth First XV or just to play at a recreational level. In three years the Academy has a 100% record of pupils passing their respective courses. Three are going on to university this year.

These have included a day’s Gig Rowing off the south Coast of Cornwall, and an Army Challenge Day at HMS Raleigh, where the lads finished first in the tug of war. This season Academy players achieved many individual goals, three players representing the county at U17 and two players in the U18 age group. This year 14 Academy players are taking their Gym Instructors Level 2 course which will give them a qualification to use in the future. Those on a sports course have also gained their Community Sports Leadership Award and have assisted this year in several Tag Rugby competitions for Primary Schools in the area, offering their refereeing and officiating knowledge.

absent friends It is with great regret that the club reports the loss of the following members during the last season. They will be sorely missed and their family and friends will always be especially welcome at the Recreation Ground. PAUL BAWDEN (1933-2010) Paul was one of the real personalities of Cornish sport, especially rugby and cricket. He attended Redruth Grammar School and played for the Old Boys for many years. He was a lifelong member of Redruth RFC and served for many years as an administrator and committee man, including being a member of the selection committee. In 1981 Paul was voted Cornwall Sports Personality of the year. Paul was also a journalist, contributing

regularly to the West Briton, Western Morning News and Sunday Independent for over 40 years as well as being a regular writer for Rugby World. Paul always had a laugh and a yarn with everyone he met and our sympathies go out to Audrey and her family and to Rosemary, Edward and David . JOHN PETERS (1958-2010) John displayed the courage and bravery that he showed on the rugby field during a long illness

and was a tremendous example to everyone. As a schoolboy he was a ball boy at the 1969 County Championship Final . At Colts level he represented Redruth, Cornwall, South West and the England Presidents XV. He played over 300 1st XV games for the Reds and in the words of a contemporary, David Penberthy, he was “a superb hard running back row forward”. He was a member of one of the Reds famous rugby families with his father Raymond, himself an outstanding flanker. A Life Member of the club for his services both on and off the pitch. John’s son Simon has kept up the family tradition representing Redruth and Cornwall and touring New Zealand with the British Colleges. Our condolences go out to all John’s family including Debbie, Amy and Simon

KEN TULLET ( 1950-2010) There is only one word that anyone would use in the club to describe Ken and that was “gentleman”. Ken was impeccable in his dress, bearing and manners and was much loved in the club and respected by everyone he met. He worked tirelessly as a member of the Executive Committee, and was a major instigator in the reforming of the supporters club. He was club curator and as a member of the Rugby Management Team he paid superb attention to detail as club Registration Officer, but above all, along with his wife Glenis, he was a supporter of the club both home and away. He also enjoyed the social side of the club and was the first to don fancy dress when the occasion arose. Our thoughts go out to Glenis and the family and we hope they attend their “Home from Home” at the Recreation Ground whenever possible.
