When non profit organisations or businesses are developing project concepts in order to improve the delivery of services to their clients/members the need to find funding for the projects normally is upper most in the minds of the Committee or business owners. In order to maximise the chances of obtaining funding, some of the things to take into account when you plan for a project include: •

The clear relationship between the project and your organisation. You cannot just add a project because it seems like a good idea. It must fit within your organisation's vision, values and mission statement.

Developing strong strategic/project planning and then undertaking regular strategic reviews (possibly six-monthly). This will enable you to make adjustments in reasonable time before the end of your project period.

Careful time related planning. A project usually has a limited time-span and you need to be able to produce the proposed outputs in the time specified.

Careful resource allocations. It is likely that you will try to raise money specifically for the project and so it is important to start early and get this right. Don't re-create programs and services that are already in the community unless you've done your background work first and you know that there's a genuine need.

Planning for how you will link the work of the project to the ongoing work of your organisation. It is important not to let projects become separate activities that are not seen as part of the organisation.

Being sure that your action plans do not interfere with the normal activities of the organisation, or clash with the activities of other projects and/or departments.

Another strong consideration for businesses and non profits when developing project ideas is to ensure the project is a S.M.A.R.T. project. For any project to be effective it must contain certain elements and be operated along a set of agreed principles. A simple tool to keep in mind when planning your project is the SMART principle. For projects to have the best chance of success, organisations must remember to make their projects S.M.A.R.T. Specific: Make it very clear what you intend to do (i.e. 'Build a multi-purpose sports court' - not 'improve the sports facilities). Measurable: Measurable criteria make the effort and expense easier to appreciate. Achievable: Appropriate for the organisation to undertake successfully with reasonable effort.

Realistic: Aligned with the organisation's purpose, goals and resources and appropriate to the client's needs/wants. Time-specific: Defined within an acceptable and realistic period of time, (with progressive 'milestones' in-built). Where possible the SMART principle should be applied to all levels of project planning - the overall project as well as the components of each project - the objectives, strategies etc. We are experts in grant writing and the reputation of our Director Shane Bowering as a grant writer of the highest calibre is beyond reproach.
