Synecdoche, Molenbeek DipArch

Glasgow School of Art Yr_5 (2022 - 23)

Synecdoche, Molenbeek explores the surrealism of architecture in cinema and its application in re-identifying the post-industrial ‘non-landmarks’ of Molenbeek-Saint-Jean, Brussels.

The thesis aims to bring this social injustice to light by providing a centre for film production and screenings to showcase the multi-cultures in Molenbeek. Through this platform, the thesis presents surrealist representations of architecture in film and establishes Synecdoche as a concept to represent Molenbeek’s socio-cultural identity.

Barras Youth Hub

The Barras Youth Hub provides a much-needed respite and opportunity space for the young people of Calton and the Barras.

As part of Glasgow City Council’s ‘Integrated Children Plan’, the council-funded scheme will offer accessible space for young residents aged between 10-19 years. The hub offers a variety of learning, leisure and performance environments to cover a wide scope of non-curriculum and creative interests the young user group may have, to encourage alternative modes of learning alongside and after their school life.

Bare Necessities! Urban Housing

Domesticity and Labour, though intrinsically linked, cannot exist without Leisure; it is Leisure which enables the sustenance of contemporary modes of living. Joffre Dumazedier states – ‘Leisure is activity – apart from obligations of work, family and society, to which the individual turns at will’. This notion ties in directly with the relationship between Domesticity and Labour – one cannot exist without the other, but both are dependent upon Leisure as an outlet for their sustenance.

Bare Necessities! examines the requirement for Domesticity and Labour to exist within the typical residential unit, where such commodities are stripped back to a minimum to allow for an increase in Leisure activity within and beyond the dwelling.

Museum of Unnatural History

A futurist approach to museum design promotes a greater understanding, knowledge and appreciation of the role of material as part of today’s society.

‘The museum of unnatural history’ sets out as a critique to the modern method of museology, acting as a typological anomaly concerned with exhibiting and the fostering of a new understanding of materiality. As opposed to the traditionally used method of chronological formatting, this museum categorises its artefacts in reference to their material specification; namely metals, ceramics, and glass.

Dancefloors of Impossibility

Through the lens of Svetlana Boym’s theory of reflective and restorative nostalgia, ‘Dancefloors of Impossibility’ compares and contrasts the reflective nostalgias of individuals who experienced the UK Rave Scene of 1988-1994, with the nostalgia of those who did not.

Happy Munchkins Pre-School

rco architecture + design (2019 - 21)

Currently found within an agricultural context on the edge of Nottingham lies a former pavilion building, disused for almost 20 years. The building is in a state of disrepair, and has attracted unwanted crime to the area. A local pre-school have proposed to take advantage of this unique landscape setting, where I was asked to produce a full planning application for the project.

rco architecture + design (2019 - 21)

This residential rear extension takes the form of a gabled roof and uses this form to dictate the framed glazing looking out towards the rear garden. An existing conservatory stood in the footprint of the proposed extension, where internal reconfigurations were also executed.

The project involved RIBA Stages 0-4, where design and tender information were produced by myself working with the client.

Alpha Kindergarten RaynerDavies Architects riba part i (2020 - 21)

On a 1700sqm site of an existing public house, RDA were commissioned to design a new £1.5million childcare facility with provision for 92 places across age groups 1-4 years. The scheme is based around a courtyard garden with a playful approach to massing, creating vaulted classroom spaces. I was involved with RIBA Stage 4 tender drawings.

RaynerDavies Architects riba part i (2020 - 21)

On 1000sqm site of a disused building, RDA were commissioned to design a high density housing scheme on a restricted infill site bounded by overlooking issues, and a steep slope. The resultant scheme provides 9no. contemporary housing units. I was involved heavily in co-ordinating the massing and layouts of the scheme, RIBA Stages 0-3.
