Comments from TIBF2013 Visitors

We were delighted to participate in TIBF again this year. It was our fifth year, and we had more than 60 meetings with publishers, translators and authors. Being at TIBF is always a great opportunity for us to meet Japanese Editors who do not travel outside Japan very often. We have a chance to present our books and exchange opinions directly with them, which is the quickest and most effective way of closing translations rights deals. It is always a productive experience to attend TIBF, because it offers us new business opportunities and allows us to more deeply understand a market that is normally not so easy to approach. We have already confirmed our participation in 2014.

We were completely new to the Asian market and TIBF was a great opportunity to get to know it. The support from the show staff was extraordinary. Everyone was very helpful, so we’re sure we’ve been able to get the best out of the fair. Although it was our first time to participate, we had about 30 very interesting and rewarding meetings on-site with excellent results. Not only with Japanese prospects, but also people from South Korea, Thailand and other Asian countries who visited our booth. It was a great occasion to meet Asian publishers and agencies, as well as the best way to get inside the publishing sphere in Japan. We can only highly recommend that our publishing partners participate because it’s really worth it.

Atlantyca S.p.A (Italy)

Legua Editorial (Spain)

We have been exhibiting at TIBF for many years. This time, we had about 50 meetings. Japanese publishers take a lot of time to make decisions, but we believe it is important to build relationships of trust with them and to maintain them. That is why we continue to come to TIBF every year. In fact, we already have had some good results in the past that we believe were due to the maintaining relationships. We have received a lot of attention from Japanese publishers, who are very keen on meeting with European publishers. We recommend other European publishers to participate.

We exhibited at TIBF to promote children’s books and ELT titles published mainly by Korean publishers. We are pleased to have a successful show with about 40 meetings. Cooperating with a Japanese agent, we were able to introduce many of our titles to leading Japanese publishers. This year in particular, Japanese publishers were interested in English reading materials and phonics titles. We think this will only spur more interest for next year, so we are trying to be prepared with more and better English learning titles in our catalogue.

Clavis Publishing (Belgium)

The ChoiceMaker Korea (Korea)

We exhibited at TIBF for the first time to develop new sales channels, and we were very happy with the successful results. Although it was our very first time, we could meet with representatives of many Japanese publishers, bookstores, libraries, variety stores and other potential customers, as well as publishers who came from other Asian countries, including Taiwan, Malaysia and South Korea. Since the fair, we have already received orders from libraries and research institutes, whose representatives we met at TIBF, and we expect to start business with 15 to 20 new clients. We learnt a lot about the sales structure of books in Japan through our participation in TIBF. It was also a plus that we welcomed the reading public to our booth on the last day and listened to their needs directly. We will come back to TIBF 2014.

I have visited TIBF several times. This year, as I had heard the theme country was Korea, I mainly visited South Korean publishers and had business meetings with them. TIBF is the best place to network with international publishers without having to travel abroad. I keep in contact with the overseas exhibitors I met on-site, and am looking forward to developing businesses with them.

This year was the first time I attended TIBF, and I was pleasantly surprised to see so many publishers I had never had a chance to meet before at the other international book fairs I’ve attended in the past. TIBF was a great opportunity to make new contacts in Japan and elsewhere, and to see all the excellent books and other media currently being produced here. I had a number of interesting meetings with many different Japanese and international publishers to discuss English language learning, self-help and business titles in particular.

Shueisha International, Editor in Chief

A to Z International, Rights Manager

I visit TIBF every year because it is a very effective venue to network with many interesting overseas publishers. Having discussions directly with those overseas publishers is the quickest way to conclude business. We are discussing co-publishing a book with one of the exhibitors we met on-site. Our next meeting will be held after the summer break.

We visit TIBF every year. It is the best opportunity to meet both Japanese and overseas publishers. The greatest thing about TIBF is that you can have face-to-face meetings with overseas publishers. This year we had long business discussions with five publishers. We are keeping in touch with them to conclude our discussions.

Sekai Bunka Publishing

Bunken Publishing

We are a rights agent from China. We visited TIBF searching for good titles in various genres including literature, humanities and social sciences, and Children’s books. We are very satisfied that we could find a number of good titles on-site. We had discussions with more than six exhibitors. Now, we are negotiating more than 50 titles with these publishers.

We visited TIBF for the first time. We were searching mainly for children’s books and are negotiating 20 titles now. We were delighted we could meet not only Japanese publishers but also European and American publishers at TIBF. We hope we can meet even more western publishers next time, and have discussions directly with them without an agent.

The Solemn Declaration of No Inflated Numbers We consistently count visitor registration numbers clearly and stringently based on the following philosophy and principles. Fundamental Philosophy of the Total Visitor Number Announcement 1. The number of visitors will be stated honestly and will not be inflated. This is our duty to exhibitors. 2. The inflation of visitor numbers is a misrepresentation of the contents of the exhibition and fraudulent to the exhibitors. 3. The number of visitors and also the counting method will be stringently announced in writing shortly after the exhibition.

3

Three Major Principles of the Counting Method 1. One business card submitted at the on-site registration counter is counted as one visitor. 2. Once registered, a visitor is counted only once, no matter how many times and days they enter the exhibition. 3. Counting the visitors each time they pass through the entrance is regarded as an actual inflation of the figures, therefore, this counting method is prohibited.
