On the morning we meet, the Kingston Webworks team is hard at work putting the finishing touches on a client’s newly created website. Their passion and creativity is evident as they work together. The almost-finished product is an amazing, interactive website coupled with a top-to-bottom marketing plan that is sure to thrill any business owner. “We understand people are taking big risks when it comes to business these days,” says Jules Green, COO. “We’re dedicated to bringing businesses to a whole new level — a level they never even knew was possible.” In an increasingly digital world, it’s crucial for businesses to build a strong online presence in order to thrive. Kingston Webworks, a full-service company located in the heart of The Limestone City, offers web solutions for both large and small businesses, making it easier for businesses to succeed, grow and ultimately increase profits.
Whether clients are hoping to create an effective user-friendly website; learn how to better manage or have a company manage their social media; discover the incredible power of Search Engine Optimization; or have print marketing pieces designed, Kingston Webworks can help. “We’re a one-stop-shop,” says company president Stephanie Montroy-Reid. “You name it, and we can do it. No matter what our clients are looking for, we have someone here who can make it happen. We have programmers, designers, marketers, and customer service people ready to work as a team and make a project come to life.” While Kingston Webworks may be a relatively new company, it’s already making waves in the city. One of their key strategic alliances is FrontRunner Professional, a well-known established brand in Kingston that deals with thousands of local business throughout North America, specifically in the death care market.
“We’re passionate about creating true partnerships with every one of our clients,” says Jules. “We want them to feel we are their go-to — their partner — for all things business. We want them to know they can completely trust any and all input we have regarding their business. We treat all of our clients as if it was a business of our own.” For some business owners, calling in outside help to manage their company’s online presence might seem daunting; Kingston Webworks is sensitive to the fact that business owners often take huge risks in order to be successful, and as such, they approach projects earnestly. “We are dealing with people’s dreams,” says social media specialist Brooke Bresee, as she pulls up a client’s website to illustrate what they’re capable of. They’re available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year for their clients. “We've been building websites and managing social media, search engine and other marketing strategies for local businesses for more than 20 years. It was time to bring our years of experience to business owners in our hometown.”
The team at Kingston Webworks were willing to help in every way, developing a professional and beautiful website which showcases our company very well. We are impressed all around with their skills, level of service and attention to detail every step of the way.” Cathie Watson, ReFined Kingston Magazine

Spring Fling to Street Style Blogger, Anna Ruck discusses How to Wear This Season’s Runway Trends
If you’re anything like me, you love yourself a hot-off-thepresses fashion magazine. Something about those glossy pages and bright bold colours gets me excited for spring blooms and sunshine. However, flipping through endless shots of runway models wearing upcoming trends can be somewhat problematic. Don’t get me wrong, they’re bursting with beauty and inspiration, but how creative does one need to be to translate those runway-worthy looks to comfortable and practical street wear? How do you incorporate spring trends realistically? Although it may be appropriate for the supermodel to sport earrings so big they pose a health hazard, or strut her stuff in a barely there bralette, it’s not easy to envision how one can stay on trend without looking like you just walked out of an art installation. So as I perused my favourite fashion magazines, it became immediately apparent to me which trends I found appealing and which I will be leaving behind for a fellow fashionista to embark upon.
18
ReFINEdKINGSTON
Here’s how
to wear three of this season’s spring trends while remaining true to your own personal style The Resistant Romantic
We see florals in some form every spring, but this year there’s a bit of a twist. It’s a slippery slope towards looking like a total girly-girl once you start layering on the ribbons and ruffles. This trend is the perfect balance between feminine romantic and bold girl boss. It breaks the rules by unexpectedly fusing together pieces that would normally be worn separately. Pair a floral print dress with a sneaker instead of a heel, balance out the ruffles on top with a sleek cigarette pant. Try mixing textures and materials that are usually considered opposites such as silk and leather. The result will be a striking combination that captures today’s modern woman: classic, but certainly not dainty.
Yellow for Every Fellow
Now here’s a colour many of us shy away from, maybe you believe it’s too bold, or that it doesn’t look good on your skin tone. Well this season there’s a shade of yellow for everyone. Designers were certainly exploring the full pallet, from darker mustard yellow to soft pastel shades. Be afraid no more! Nothing welcomes warm temperatures like a pop of chromatic yellow, but if you prefer to take baby steps towards the sun, try infusing the colour into your look with accessories. A bright pair of shades, a light silk scarf or a daring pair of pumps can liven up your look without a head-totoe commitment.
A trend is just that, it comes and goes, so don’t worry about indulging just for the sake of being in the know. A trendy purchase is right for you if it enhances your classic pieces, complements what you already own, and aligns with your personal style. Think of it as adding a touch of spring to your step.
The 80s Are Back in a Big Way
Obviously, since everything was big in the eighties! Regardless of what your favourite piece to wear was back in the day, chances are you’ll get to sport those retro looks once again this season. Everything from branded t-shirts featuring nostalgic logos, to slouchy tailored trousers, all in metallic shades of course. The shoulders, whether you choose to pad them both or expose just one are also making a fierce return. Reminisce in your favourite flashy pieces; just don’t wear them all at the same time with your scrunchie.

EXPERT ADVICE L A D I E S FAS H I O N
Ever wonder how buyers and designers predict what we will wear years ahead of our purchasing decisions? The science behind forecasting is not about reinventing the wheel each season, but about being in touch with everything from cultural trends, celebrities and influencers, music and film, the economy around us, themes in home decor and even influences from food and drink. While large fashion houses rely on specialist companies and trend forecast reports sometimes created 3-4 years ahead of time, the rest of us in the real world are able to live far closer with our feet on the ground, and in the present.

As buyers of a multi-label store with global brands, we get a front row seat to all the latest and upcoming styles and trends as they are presented close to a year ahead of when they will actually hit the floor. A good buyer knows what to look for to suit their individual market and clientele. In larger cities like New York, Paris or even Tokyo, the latest runway fashions, while sharing a common theme or inspiration, will still be adapted and fine tuned to be relevant in their individual market and it’s interpretation. Reality is some “trends” come and go. Three seasons ago everyone was forecasting the flare jean would hit strong and solid again. And yes, two years later we are seeing hemlines widen, but the skinny jean is not giving up it’s top spot anytime soon. The classic straight trouser is a staple, but the culotte is trying for a comeback next season. What will win the coveted spot in your closet? The answer is: You will decide. Some of us are happy evolving forward in a way that allows us to add a few versatile key pieces to our wardrobe, be relevant to the latest styles, and yet not venture too far out of our comfort zone. Others want to shop ahead of the curve and always be first to rock the latest and greatest in what’s coming down the tube. The woman who rocked the flare jean the season ahead of the curve is a trail blazer, daring to push her own boundaries. Was she wrong? Never. Was it a good purchase? That’s for her to answer.
So how do you, as the star of it all, stay ahead of the curve? We’ll it’s tricky. My advice is to have a concept of the look you are moving toward, while staying true to your own style. There is nothing wrong with branching beyond our everyday taste, but doing so a few key pieces at a time can be easier to step into. Pick a key influence in the look you are moving forward with. Our own personal preferences are the ultimate determiner of what we will and will not accept, but we can all find inspiration in our lives — a movie, culture, or a key influencer. And there are so many interpretations and looks within a theme, so try a number of them before you make your decision of whether or not it’s for you. And to help pinpoint what to look for, rely on an expert who knows what they’re talking about to ensure you’re always first when it comes to fashion.

Nail Your Look
If you’re a fan of a stand-out manicure, you’re going to love spring and summer 2017’s nail trends. Hot off the runway, here are a few of our favourites: By Katrina Geenevasen-Garlough
Graphic Nail Art
Cuticle “Jewelry”
Simple and stunning, graphic nail art was all over the 2017 runways. Turn the classic mani on its head by having your manicurist paint either your tips or nail beds (alternate the look on each finger) with a classic, bold red like the models on the Rebecca Minkoff runway.
We feel every day calls for some sparkle, so naturally, we love spring and summer 2017s cuticle “jewelry” trend, which was seen on the Rodarte runways. To achieve this look, have your manicurist top clear-painted nails with a thin rim of glittery polish around your cuticle line. It’s subtle, but we guarantee you won’t be able to stop looking at your manicure.
For a go-with-anything mani like the models on the Tanya Taylor runway, try brushing on a nude colour, and then add bold colours in the top and bottom corners of your nails: think reds, oranges, teals, mints, blues and purples. Need a cheat sheet? Try swiping on pink and teal on your thumb, red and orange on your pointer finger, blue and purple on your middle finger, mint and yellow on your ring finger, and red and teal on your baby nail.) For a more subdued (but still standout!) look, paint two squares of contrasting blues (like turquoise and navy) over a nude basecoat on each nail as seen on the Novis runway. On the Jeremy Scott runway, models were seen with their nails painted in one colourful shade with dabs of a contrasting colour painted on each nail. It’s an easy look to achieve at home. Just use the eraser end of pencil to dab on your chosen colour once you’ve allowed the base colour to dry. Looking for colour combos to try? Experiment with turquoise and pink, red and yellow, or pink and orange.

Neutrals For a wear-with-anything, lady-like manicure, you can’t go wrong with a simple, neutral nail. This spring, go for creamy white shades, or beige hues that match your skin tone. Models on Carolina Herrera’s runway proved pale pinks are just as pretty.
Bold Tips Have your manicurist paint long nails a subtle shade of pink. At first glance, this look isn’t dramatically different. But what sets this trend apart is the hot pink that goes under the tip of your nail. Now that’s a hot tip for unbeatable spring style.
Metallics Countless models were sporting metallic nails on the spring and summer runways in shades of everything from bronze and pink to gold and silver. We especially loved the look models wore on the Phillip Lim runway: brush a silver polish over a matte white shade. So glam.
Relaxation and renewal of your mind, body and spirit.

ho says you have to wear a white gown to walk down the aisle? If you’re in favour of eschewing the time-honoured tradition for something a little more unique, here are a few alternative ideas.
The Coloured Gown
The Two-Piece Gown
In 2012, Jessica Biel floated down the aisle in a romantic pink gown. If you’re not a fan of the all-white wedding either, look to your favorite hue. Fans of Cinderella may opt for a dreamy blue, while brides who crave overthe-top drama might choose a black frock. If romance is on your radar (of course it is, it’s your wedding day, after all!) red — known to many as the colour of love — is the perfect choice.
For adventurous spirits seeking something just a little bit different, a two-piece gown might be the answer. Separates allow the intrepid bride to completely customize her wedding day look. Want to change it up for the reception? Swap out your top or bottom in lieu of something a little sexier following the ceremony. If you’re in doubt, just remember this golden rule: two is always better than one.
The Pantsuit
The Jumpsuit
Designers like Carolina Herrera are recognizing that some brides want to take the pantsuit out of the office and down the aisle on their big day. There’s no denying, after all, that there is something sleek and sexy about a great-fitting suit. Need some convincing? Look to Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City: The Movie. This bride proved a wife-to-be can wear the classic pantsuit… and wear it well.
Stylish and sexy, jumpsuits are making their way from the runway to the aisle. Perfect for a bride with confidence to spare, the jumpsuit can range from streamlined and classic to casual and fun. With versions in everything from lace to tulle, you’ll find something perfect to walk down the aisle in style.

Paradise is always where love dwells. Where’s your paradise? Here are a handful of unique ideas that are anything but ordinary for your destination wedding.
Italy
Aspen, Colorado
New York, New York
Italy is a country made for lovers. Exchange your vows among historic ruins in the Eternal City of Rome, or beside the sparkling Mediterranean seaside. If you and your partner are seeking ultimate romance, consider Positano. Tucked on the picturesque Amalfi Coat, the steep hillsides crowded with pastel-coloured buildings will offer a striking vista for your big day.
If it’s a winter wonderland you’re after, the Rocky Mountain town of Aspen promises to impress you and your guests. It’s not only known for its jaw-dropping scenery (the majestic snow-capped peaks are astonishing, after all!), but also for its highend restaurants and boutiques.
Known as the “city that never sleeps”, New York is a great option for couples seeking the vibrancy of a big city wedding. There’s no shortage of memorable locations to pick from (Central Park and The Plaza are two of the most popular spots) but don’t be afraid to try something a little more out of the ordinary, like a library, museum or art gallery.
Maui, Hawaii Dreaming of a beachside wedding? Consider Maui. It’s perfect for couples eager to feel the sand between their toes. Between Maui’s stunning waterfalls and crashing waves, you’re guaranteed a memorable day. Keep in mind that tourist season is in full swing from winter through early spring, so if you’re hoping to save some cash, choose another time of year.
Napa Valley, California Say “cheers!” to the wedding of your dreams in Napa Valley. With its gorgeous views of rolling vineyards, Napa provides the perfect locale for a remarkable outdoor wedding. Host your reception at any one of the area’s grand ballrooms, and plan to stay afterwards for your honeymoon.

The Recipe for a Perfect Wedding Your first feast as a married couple is perhaps the most memorable meal you’ll ever have, so you’d best make it count. While there’s nothing wrong with the ever-popular plated dinner, or a casual buffetstyle meal, we’ve rounded up a few alternatives for you and your honey to consider.
Cocktail Style
A cocktail-style reception isn’t necessarily less expensive than a plated dinner (chefs may charge more for the time it takes to prepare so many hors d’oeuvres and you have to factor in the amount of servers needed to hand out the food), but it’s a less formal alternative for brides and grooms who want to encourage their guests to mix and mingle freely throughout the evening. It’s becoming increasingly popular because it allows for a wide assortment of options, and you don’t need to worry about those dreaded seating charts. (But remember to have chairs available for ladies in heels to rest their sore feet!). Older guests will appreciate somewhere to rest, as well. Since you’re skipping a main meal, opt for filling hors d’oeuvres that won’t have guests running out to grab some fast food during the dancing portion of the evening. Think protein-based appetizers, like steak kebabs or chicken wings. Have plenty of vegetarian options, and consider guests who have gluten allergies, as well. You also might want to consider having food stations set up around the reception area, so every guest can help him or herself as they wish.
Barbecue
Hosting a spring or summer wedding? A barbecue-style dinner is perfect for low-key and casual brides and grooms. Think beyond hotdogs and hamburgers for your special day and have your caterer serve steak, spare ribs and barbecue-glazed chicken, for example, with mouth-watering sides like grilled veggies, potato wedges and gourmet mac-and-cheese. Long harvest tables set with mismatched vintage china, cotton napkins and lace tablecloths will enhance the relaxed atmosphere. Pick wildflowers for your centrepieces, and serve drinks in Mason jars.
High Tea
If you’re working within the confines of a smaller budget (as many couples are), a high tea is a wonderfully elegant alternative to a formal dinner.
38
ReFINEdKINGSTON
Serve everything from buttery scones to delicate finger sandwiches, and finish off with berries and sliced fruit, and cookies or brownies. To up the fun factor and encourage conversation among guests, ask them wear fascinators or hats to mimic the elegance of a traditional English tea.
Brunch
The early bird gets the worm, as they say, so if you and your sweetie are up with the sun, you may opt for a brunch-style reception. If the brunch follows a romantic sunrise ceremony, even better. Have plenty of juices on hand, as well as coffee and tea; caffeine is king for guests still rubbing sleep from their eyes. Even if though everyone will be in a celebratory mood, not all guests will want a mimosa or Bloody Mary.
Think beyond raw veggies! Serve late-night noshes your guests will get excited about. Cookies and milk: Need we say more? Grilled cheese: The ultimate comfort food Personal pizzas: Perfect for late-night revellers Donuts: No need to stop dancing with these hand-held delights Poutine with local cheese curds: A classic Canadian delicacy!
This is a great option for brides and grooms seeking a relaxed affair; perhaps you’re on a budget or having a second wedding. Just make sure you visit your chosen space during the day; you want to make sure there are plenty of windows to let in lots of bright light. (Nobody wants a gloomy atmosphere on his or her wedding day, after all!). Following your ceremony, have some small bites available for your guests to nosh on while you’re having your photos taken. The main meal can consist of everything from waffles and pancakes, to honey-baked ham, frittatas, omelets, and fresh fruit.
Dessert Only
Have an enthusiastic sweet tooth? Consider a dessert-only reception. This is a great option for couples having an evening wedding and want their reception to begin around 8 p.m. (You want to give your guests time to have dinner beforehand). Make sure you offer your guests a wide assortment of bite-sized desserts; think cheesecakes, brownies, tartes, cupcakes and mousse. Desserts should be served buffet-style, so guests can serve themselves and mix and mingle throughout the evening. Make sure you place some tables throughout the reception space so guests can rest their feet. If you want, consider some light bites later on in the evening to keep appetites satisfied and the dance floor hopping.

So you’re going to the chapel, and you’re gonna get married. But have you considered how you’re getting there? Will it be in a classic limo? Aboard a flashy party bus? In an elegant horse-drawn carriage? Whatever method of transportation you choose for your wedding day, just remember: getting there is half the fun.

The Limousine Forget the staid limos of days-gone-by. Today’s limos cater to wedding parties in endlessly wonderful ways. Super-stretch limos feature flatscreen televisions, surroundsound audio systems and even fibre optic lighting — they’re the ultimate in comfort. Pop the cork on a bottle of wine from the mini-bar, and relish in the unbeatable luxury. The Vintage Vehicle Feel the wind in your veil as you zoom to the church in a vintage convertible. If you’re concerned about a meticulously coiffed updo, opt for a hardtop ride instead. A RollsRoyce is a timeless choice, while an Aston Martin promises to be equally elegant. The Party Bus Keep the party going long after the last song at your reception aboard a tricked-out party bus. With disco lighting, surround sound speakers and ample room to mix and mingle, today’s party buses are perfect for the couple that likes to make merry in total style. The Horse and Carriage If romance is high on your radar, snuggle with your sweetie aboard a charming horsedrawn carriage; you’ll feel like you’re part of a real-life fairy tale. Consider renting a carriage built for two and have your wedding party follow behind you in a second one; it’ll give you time for a quiet snuggle before the busyness of the evening ahead. The Sports Car Do you have a need for speed? Zoom to your reception in total style (while following the rules of the road, of course!) in a sports car. Trendy, sexy and just plain fun, sports cars are becoming increasingly popular for newlyweds. Pucker up in a Porsche or canoodle in a Camaro; just know that whatever ride you choose, you’ll be making a statement none of your guests will forget.

Crowning Glory Perfect Wedding Day Hair Accessories
While there is certainly something to be said about the elegance that’s found in simplicity, sometimes, a bride needs a little “extra”. Whether it’s a sparkling hair clip or tiara, a classic, flowing veil or an elegant barrette, the right hair accessory can elevate any bride’s wedding day look. After all, as designer Charles Eames once said, “The details are not just the details; they make the design.” Veils Ask any married woman about the very moment she felt most like a bride, and chances are, she will say the moment she saw herself with her veil on.
Head Wraps Perfect for a “boho-chic” bride, head wraps are both fashionable and romantic. Worn low on the forehead, or a little higher (much like a headband), they are easy to incorporate into many hairstyles, and even work on brides with short hair. Much like veils, there are head wraps suited to every bride. If you’re craving some sparkle, look for a wrap with rhinestones or crystals. If you want something with a vintage feel, opt for something with lace. Did your grandmother pass down a favourite broach? Make it your “something old” by pinning it to a simple head wrap. Headbands
If you’re searching for the perfect veil for your big day, you’re in luck: there’s an endless array of styles and colours to choose from. Try an elbow-length, fingertip-length or shoulder-length veil for a more traditional look. If you’re seeking more drama, choose a “Waltz” veil (which falls somewhere between your fingertips and the floor); a “Chapel” veil (which trails along the floor); or a “Cathedral” veil (which is usually the longest and most detailed).
These are most certainly not the headbands of your youth. Bridal headbands are elegant and beautiful, and much like head wraps, work on many hairstyles. Designs range from sophisticated and sparkly, to subdued and delicate. What you choose depends mostly on your style of dress, but what catches your eye is perhaps most important. Try on a few styles to find the perfect look. Barrettes, Pins and Combs
If you’re a vintage or retro bride, you’ll love “Birdcage” veils. Paired with bold red lips, your groom won’t be able to take his eyes off you. “Blusher” veils are equally beautiful, giving volume and style to your wedding day hair. Whatever you choose, be sure to try it with your dress; you don’t want the veil to compete with your gorgeous gown. Don’t forget to check out the look from behind!
Adding the smallest amount of sparkle to your wedding day look, barrettes, pins and combs are easily incorporated into any look, and are easy to switch up throughout your big day. Try something elegant tucked into your hair for the ceremony (a rhinestone and crystal barrette, for example), and switch it out for something fun (feathers, anyone?) for the reception.

Style Up the Groom No two grooms are alike. Luckily, the basic tux can be personalized with a few simple modifications.
Colour Your World
If you like to think outside the box, ditch the basic black tux for something more colourful. These days, tuxedos are made in an assortment of hues that range from the predictable (grey, brown, navy blue) to the extreme (indigo, plum, blush pink). If you don’t care about having a timeless look, look to the colour trends of the year – spring and summer 2017 will see a lot of blues, for example. If you want to incorporate just a little colour into your look, try a coloured cummerbund, pocket square, tie, or bowtie.
44

Snazzy Socks
While there is nothing wrong with a set of socks that perfectly match the hue of your tux, why not be bold and experiment a little with some colour? Opt for stripes for a classic look, or polka dots if you’re more of a retro-styled groom. But the options don’t end there; endless companies are catering to the trend with a plethora of patterns – the hardest part will be narrowing down your options to just one. Our tip? Give a pair to each of your groomsmen for a fun and affordable gift. (Some companies offer embroidery to personalize your gift, and they make for some great pictures, as well!).
Cuff links
Whether you’re a golfer, an outdoorsman, or a sports car aficionado, there’s a set of cuff links out there made just for you. Visit a jeweler to have some custom made, or borrow a set from your father or grandfather for a more personal touch.
Lapel Pin
Swap out the traditional boutonniere for a lapel pin. Much like cufflinks, lapel pins can be personalized, and easily take your look to a whole new level.
EXPERT ADVICE M E N ' S FAS H I O N
Guys are often unsure about what they can wear for their weddings.
Jim Adams of Chris James answers some frequently asked questions: What can I do to show my personality without drawing attention away from the bride? It’s good when the groom understands that he’s not the star of the wedding and, as a gentleman, wants to defer to the bride. But with the bride’s input, there are still plenty of ways to highlight your individuality. First off, a well-tailored, trim suit is flattering and will allow you to stand out from the crowd. Then there are a number of little extras you can add — a unique vest, a colourful tie, a coordinating pocket square, gorgeous shoes or funky socks — to accent your suit. Meaningful family items, such as your grandfather’s tie bar, cuff links or pocket watch, will complete your look and add a personal meaning to the day. How can a groom ensure a perfect fit? It’s possible for every man to have a suit that fits beautifully and looks contemporary. Since guys come in all shapes and sizes, however, they won’t follow the same path to perfection. The most important thing is to start with the right cut for your body type. Fuller in the thigh and seat? No problem. Broader through the chest or between the shoulder points? Done. You need to start with a suit that is proportioned like you and feels comfortable. From there, we can tweak and tailor it so it fits like a glove. If you are a particularly challenging fit or want a suit super-customized to a specific style, we offer a custom-cut service and have a number of special-order options that can satisfy almost any requirement. In terms of colour or fabric choices, tall guys have it a bit easier since nearly everything works for them. Shorter grooms should consider lighter-weight fabrics as they add less bulk. But in the end, a good fit is what matters. It absolutely transforms your look and it’s your best armour.
What suit colours work? Black suits are always appropriate and add elegance to an evening wedding. Grey, however, is the freshest colour I’m seeing in wedding suits. It works at any time of the year and the tones cover the spectrum from light, silvery grey to medium and charcoal greys. Grey is sophisticated yet neutral, which means it’s an easy colour to accessorize. Against the calm palette of your suit, you can add ties, shirts, pocket squares and even vests in colours that coordinate with the scheme chosen for the bride and bridesmaids. Does the time of day influence what I wear? A basic rule of thumb is that an earlier wedding allows you to wear a lighter suit or tuxedo, while you should go to darker shades (and perhaps more formal styling) later in the day. But many couples today are breaking with traditions and simply doing what feels right, such as having their ceremony at a family cottage or on tropical beach, and that means anything goes as long as it reflects the mood chosen by the couple. I’m a traditionalist and a fashion guy. I like trends as much as the next person, but I always think ahead to what the pictures will look like in 10 or 15 years. Good style endures. So for me, a less-is-more classic look will always last, and I prefer tasteful and coordinated to overstated and contrived. What style tips can you offer to groomsmen? Leave your personal likes and dislikes behind and do what the groom asks. Spring for a new shirt and tie without complaint if he wants you to. It’s your friend’s biggest day. After all, every guy on the planet needs a new white shirt once in a while! Do you have a certain style that you tend to lean towards in formal wear? Drawing on my traditional tastes, I always favour a tuxedo, black suit, grey suit or navy blazer. The extra bit of style can come from how the suit is accessorized: shirt, tie, shoes, pocket square, belt and socks. What should a groom wear to a casual wedding? It’s a wide range, but I always like a shirt and tie. A navy blazer is the minimum, but you can still make a stunning, pulled-together look with tan, cream, light grey or grey pants and even jeans. A tie is optional for a beach wedding that features natural linens or silk. For a fresh, crisp look, a white shirt is always right. Any advice for the big day? Give yourself time. Relax and enjoy yourself. Really important: Don’t wear your suit jacket in the car to the wedding. Lay it neatly in the back of the car and put it on once you arrive. During the ceremony your back will face your guests and a wrinkled jacket is completely unnecessary. Don’t get dressed too early or you’ll end up sweaty, stinky and wrinkly. Let a professional, like me, tie all the ties in your wedding party. That way, you’ll look consistent for the event and for your pictures. After all, nerves can make it hard to get details perfect on the big day.

Cake Trends
By Katrina Geenevasen-Garlough
In ancient times, Roman wedding ceremonies were finalized by breaking a cake made of wheat or barley over the bride’s head as a symbol of good fortune. Today, cakes are simply a great way to end your first meal as newlyweds on a sweet note. Need some inspiration for something that’s a little out of the ordinary? Look no further.
46
ReFINEdKINGSTON
Chocolate Cravings
If you’re tired of the tried-and-true white cake with buttercream icing, a chocolate cake with a rich and velvety cocoa icing might just be a great alternative. It’s a little bit unexpected, and will satisfy many a guests’ late-night sweet tooth. If you want a cake that looks as beautiful as it tastes, have your baker place delicate chocolate curls on the cake so they mimic the shape of pansies. This is a great option for a spring wedding. (Tip: Don’t place the cake in the sun; the chocolate curls will melt.)
Individual Cakes
Who says you need one giant, three-tiered cake? Opt for itty-bitty personal-sized confections, instead. An added bonus? If you place the sweet little treats in beautifully decorated boxes on your guests’ dinner plates, they can double as table décor. Try a sweet note of thanks tied on with ribbon for something that’s as easy as it is thoughtful. An added bonus? If your guests are too full following dinner, they can bring their cakes home to enjoy later on. If you want the petite treats to be even more personal, have your guests’ names written in icing on each cake. It’s a gesture they’ll remember forever.
Opt for itty-bitty personal-sized confections like tiny cakes or cake pops.
Sweet as Pie
If you’re always gobbling up the tasty pastry crust at your Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners, serving pie at your wedding is a great way to put a personal spin on the evening. After all, so much of your day is already personalized…why stop with dessert? While this idea is great for all weddings, this idea works particularly well with rustic or country-themed weddings. Try placing a few different pies on each table (make sure you label them) so your guests can choose their favourite and serve themselves.
Donut Delight
One thing is for certain: us Canadians love donuts. Celebrate that love at your wedding! To make your donuts weddingworthy, have them placed on a graduated tiered stand to mimic the shape of a cake. Decorate with edible pearls or tiny flowers for pretty final touch.
Cake Pops
For a grab-and-go dessert that’s great for those guests who don’t want to stop dancing, cake pops are a great alternative to a traditional cake. Having a rustic wedding? Place them in mason jars painted with chalk paint and then distressed. For an elegant alternative, have your baker roll the cake pops in sugar, and tie the handles with a white satin bow. Want something glam? Have half of the cake pops dipped in edible gold sprinkles.
Cake Cups
Savoury Cake
If you enjoy ending a great meal with a cheese platter, have a tiered cake made with a variety of savoury cheeses. It’s important to ensure your cake is made with a variety of colours and textures; incorporate hard and soft cheeses, a blue cheese, goat, and a crumbly cheese. Keep in mind that hard varieties will be the most popular, so order more of those. For a colourful finishing touch, decorate your cake with fruit (figs and grapes, for example) and a mixture of nuts.
For a dessert that doubles as a take-home favour, have mini cakes and pies (go for unique options like Boston cream pie or red velvet cake for something a little out of the ordinary!) placed in glass cups etched with your initials, a favourite quote, your names or your wedding date.

A Single Stylish Stem Instead of a bouquet, carry a single bloom down the aisle. Try a magnolia or rose in a soft white hue, or a peony in an eyepopping, bright shade of pink. After all, why would you carry a whole bouquet when one flower on its own can have such a dramatic impact? (Added bonus: you’ll save some cash!).
Feathers Delightfully diva-esque, feather wedding bouquets are true show-stoppers. There are tons of DIY YouTube videos online, allowing you to customize your bouquet any way you like. If you want a traditional floral bouquet that lets your inner fashionista shine though, have a florist design a bouquet with a few feathers to add just a touch of glam.
Vintage Fan Visit an antique shop or raid your grandmother’s attic for a vintage fan. It’s an elegant addition to any wedding (especially if you’re going for a vintage theme!) and will help you keep your cool if your wedding lands on a hot and humid summer day.
Book Pages If your other true love is literature, make paper flowers with the pages from your favourite novel. Look up how-to videos online to help you with the design process. Are you a musician? Sheet music works just as well.
Bridal Clutch Any reason for a new handbag is good reason, we say! So why not carry a stunning bridal clutch on your big day? There are endless options out there whatever your style happens to be. Choose something with rhinestones or crystals for a sparkly touch, or a beaded clutch for a more antiquated look. Craving something sassy? Opt for a handbag enconsced in white feathers. If you’re a more traditional bride, there’s always lovely lace. Stash your wedding-day must-haves inside your clutch (bobby pins, lipstick and tissues) for touchups throughout the day.
Balloons A balloon bouquet is a great alternative for a fun and funky bride hosting a casual celebration. Balloons are great props for pictures, and they’re an affordable option for brides-to-be on a tight budget.
Fur Muff If we were to get married again, we’d do it in the winter just so we could use a fur muff. Undeniably elegant, these relics from days gone by ensure you’re classy and cosy on your big day; it’s a perfect combo for a winter wedding! If you want to add some sparkle, pin on a broach. Top your dress with a long and flowing cape, and your guests won’t be able to stop staring; you’ll look like an ethereal snow queen. Teapot Love the look of flowers, but want to put your own eccentric twist on them? Have a florist design your bouquet in a teapot. This idea is perfect for a bride who still wants an element of tradition on her wedding day. Borrow an antique teapot from your grandmother; she will love being part of your day in such a special and unique way.
Arm Garland or Corsage If you want your hands free for more important things (perhaps for sipping champagne, or holding the hand of your sweetie), an arm garland is perfect for you. Arm garlands are a great pick for boho brides, or for those hosting an outdoor wedding. You’ll feel and look like a breathtaking fairy. Parasol Like muffs, parasols are a perfectly pretty way to incorporate a little history into your wedding day. If you’re having a summer wedding, they’re also a great way to shield your face from the sun. Lantern If you’re having an evening wedding, we can’t think of a prettier way to light up the night. Adorn them with flowers or ribbon or just leave them plain. There’s nothing more romantic than a candlelight ceremony. An added bonus? The flickering candlelight will flatter your features.

Second Weddings Planning your second wedding? Host a memorable day worthy of your feelings for one another; after all, love sometimes needs a second chance because it just wasn’t ready the first time around.

The Dress
When it comes to choosing your dress, there’s one rule: choose what you love! Ask yourself what styles excite you, and let that guide your final decision. If you want to wear a poufy Cinderella-style gown, go right ahead. If you’d prefer a sleek, creamcoloured sheath dress, that’s perfect, too. While wedding etiquette experts advise second-time brides to avoid veils and long trains, we think you should do whatever you want. After all, it’s your day - not theirs! When it comes to the colour, who says it has to be white? Choose a blush colour for something romantic and sweet, or a light blue for something that’s a little unexpected. Still unsure? Consider what colour best complements your skin, hair and eyes, and you’ll have endless options. (Our tip: Peek in your closet to see what colour dominates the shelves. Then get shopping for dresses in that hue.)
The Ceremony
If you want to skip all the pomp and circumstance of a traditional wedding, why not do something completely unexpected and host a surprise wedding? Choose a date and venue, and mail out

invitations to your guests inviting them to what appears to be a party for another occasion: a birthday, or an upcoming holiday, for example. Include a dress code so guests can wear something appropriate for the special occasion. Be sure to let all your vendors in on the secret, and assign a point person who can help out with all the little details the day of. Just ensure the person you choose (whether it’s a parent, older child or best friend) can keep a secret!
The Children
If you or your fiancé have children from your previous marriage, you may be wondering how you can get them involved. First ask them if they’d like to particpate, and then find age-appropriate ways to incorporate them into your wedding day. You may opt for them to be bridesmaids or groomsmen, or even have them walk you down the aisle. If they’re very young, have them be a flower girl or ring bearer, or ask them to perform if they are musically inclined. Also consider writing your children into your vows; it’s a wonderful way to make them feel included.
The Wedding Registry
Chances are, you already have towels and tablecloths, so a traditional wedding registry probably isn’t for you. Some couples choose to create a honeymoon registry, while others yet opt not to have a registry at all. If, however, guests insist on gifting you with something, choose a charity they can make a donation to in your names.

Why Choose Aveda Products for Your Hair?
Joanne Burke & Dayna Blais Touch of Wellness Aveda Spa 86 Centre Street, Napanee (613) 354-3131 touchofwellnessnapanee@gmail.com www.touchofwellnessnapanee.com
The stresses we all face on a day-to-day basis accumulate over time. I wanted to create a place in Napanee where people could come and be relaxed, restored and rejuvenated.
The best part about Aveda products is that they are naturally derived. Aveda is commitment to delivering high performance, botanically based products that are kinder to the planet — which is good for all of us. When I first considered having my hair coloured I sought good advise from a stylist who was an expert in colouring. Aveda provides amazing education on hair colour and is always on the leading edge. While millions of people purchase over-thecounter colour products to change their appearance, many of these products are causing significant damage to the hair. Nothing is more frustrating than spending good money on hair colour only to have it fade quickly, or to have your hair damaged beyond repair.
Here are some tips on having your hair colour last as long as possible: Don’t Shampoo Before You Colour Colour doesn’t mesh well with clean hair. You should not shampoo your hair for 24 to 48 hours before the colour is added. You want your scalp to have some natural oils present, as it helps the colour adhere better. Additionally, with an unwashed scalp, the colour will penetrate deeper into the hair follicles, making it last longer. It will also act as a protective barrier so your head does not become irritated from the hair colour.
Colour Glaze or Gloss Ask your colourist about having glaze or gloss applied to your hair at the time of colouring. In addition to extending the life of your hair’s colour, this will also seal the hair’s cuticle. These treatments will give your hair more shine, producing a beautiful colour reflection. Conditioning You should use a deep conditioner — one that is made for coloured hair — at least once a week. This will help maintain the colour and strengthen the hair. Hydration and Moisture After you have had your hair coloured, you want to consume more water than normal, which will keep your hair from drying out and moisturize the roots. Water If you plan to swim in the ocean or a swimming pool, be sure to wear a swimming cap. Unfortunately, both salt water and chlorinated pools can cause the colour to fade. With pools, you might experience an unwanted hue of pink, yellow or green. Sunshine When out in the sun, wear a hat to protect your coloured hair. Ask your colourist about Aveda’s Suncare Protective Veil product to help keep the sun from fading your colour. This is a relatively new product and is very effective.

LASER HAIR REMOVAL
“Laser hair removal is permanent hair reduction,” explains Dayna Blais, spa therapist at Touch of Wellness in Napanee. “It works by destroying the hair at the germinating cell.” While pregnancy, hormones and medication can potentially produce new hair growth, the hair treated with a laser will never reappear, promises Blais. Most spas, including Touch of Wellness, recommend starting with a package that includes a series of six treatments every four weeks. “The hair grows in three different cycles,” says Blais. “We want the hair in its active phase, so that’s why we recommend starting with six treatments and following up with touch up packages.” When all is said and done, the majority of clients can expect around 80 per cent total reduction. So is it painful? Like most other things, everyone’s pain tolerance varies. “Some clients experience slight heat, while others have described it as an elastic band snapping at the skin,” says Blais. Touch of Wellness uses a Soprano laser, which is very tolerable compared to older technology.
If you have a big trip or a wedding coming up, it’s reassuring to know you can expect very few side effects with a Soprano laser. “There’s very slight redness and swelling,” says Blais. “Guests can come on their lunch break to have a laser treatment done.” With around an 80 per cent total reduction in the amount of hair, it’s no wonder laser treatment has become so popular. “Laser is more popular now because of the proven results,” says Blais. “Our clients are thrilled with their results. I’d highly recommend laser hair removal, especially when you have dark, coarse hair. Even when you are left with 20 per cent of hair, it’s a lot finer and pretty much blonde.”
WAXING
One of the most common methods of hair removal is waxing. While it lasts longer than shaving, it’s not permanent; expect regular sessions about every four to six weeks. Side effects are minimal, and may include redness, swelling and ingrown hairs. Blais’ No. 1 tip for those new to waxing? “It’s important your hair is around a quarter of an inch long the day of your appointment in order ensure you get the best results.” While some find waxing painful (especially if you are going totally bare “down there”), you might find it reassuring to know over the counter pain medications can ease your discomfort. Also encouraging is that the more you wax, the thinner and finer your hair becomes, making subsequent de-fuzzing sessions easier.

Be Confident, Beautiful & Self Assured With Help From
KaySara Laser and Cosmetic By Faith Woodland Photos Stephen Wild
“Que Sera, Sera”... a sentiment sung by Doris Day, declares a resignation to fate, an acceptance of futility in orchestrating one’s destiny. Ironically, two young Kingston women have played on the phrase and created a company, which in its nature, is built upon the exact opposite way of thinking. KaySara is a company formed on the possibility of change.
Medical aesthetic clinic KaySara Laser and Cosmetic, developed by nurses Sara Dawson and Kaytie Kampman, uses the most advanced medical technology available to provide a vast array of cosmetic treatment for the men and women of Kingston. It allows people to take charge of their physical nature and achieve desired change. Sara and Kaytie connected with one another while working as RPNs. Quickly finding common ground in a passion for health and beauty, and a desire to provide non-surgical, less invasive treatments, they joined Dr. Wardle of Prestige Cosmetic Surgery to share workspace and provide a greater array of services. Working in collaboration with Dr. Wardle allows KaySara to determine and provide the most suitable treatment for each client on an individual basis. Sara or Kaytie will meet with clients for a free consultation and then create a unique individualized plan, which may include preventative “lifestyle health measures,” stem cell therapy, Botox injection and Venus Viva treatments.

Venus Viva methodology combines NanoFractional Radio Frequency and Smart Scan Technology to effectively treat textural irregularities, scarring, wrinkles and stretch marks. KaySara invested in Venus Versa, a machine that is the most advanced and adaptable multi-treatment available, and the only one presently used in Kingston. Venus Versa uses Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology to deliver direct, gentle bursts of energy to targeted areas of the skin. This technology is effective for vascular lesions: rosacea, spider veins, leg veins and angiomas, as well as pigmented lesions: melasma, freckles and sun/age spots. It improves fine lines, reduces pore sizes, smooths and evens skin. They use diamond polar-radio frequency for skin tightening and collagen synthesis.
As skin care specialists, Sara and Kaytie can help clients who live with acne scarring or other skin issues. Using the Venus Skin Care line, clients receive a full medical grade product and system to solve various problems. The Venus Skin Care products are developed with human bone marrow stem cells, “truly the most scientifically proven skin care system available,” as it is the only type completely adaptable by the body. Having the same DNA and proteins, these products can be used effectively anywhere in the body to repair and rejuvenate one’s own cells. A post treatment kit is included with procedures. Client Brittany Lovelock says, “The Venus Viva skin treatment helped diminish the acne scars that I’ve had since high school. I couldn't believe the difference with how much smoother my skin was after this treatment and how much smaller my pores were... The Venus Versa skin treatments removed the sunspots on my face and helped with the firming of my skin by reducing
wrinkles and improved the over all tone of my skin. I would recommend these treatments to anyone, as they are not only quick and easy, but they also help you feel more confident and beautiful.” Sara and Kaytie are passionate about maintaining natural ideal beauty and instilling self-confidence in clients through their work. They believe that plastic surgery, Botox injections and the use of fillers are simply ways that clients can take control of their lives and change the elements that hold them back from being confident, beautiful and self assured. KaySara Laser and Cosmetic, as a private practice, is the “Ritz Carleton” of aesthetic practices in Kingston and a place where clients can make their aesthetic dreams come true. It isn’t until you reach the training area, however, that you realize the true essence of this facility. Energetics Health and Fitness is serious about its clients and their fitness, with state-of-the-art, medically tested and approved, hand selected exercise equipment that is designed for everyone’s needs, goals, abilities and personal preferences. In the age of chain fitness facilities and fast fitness fads, with no real results, owners Amber Peck and Mark Antoine wanted to capture something different when they designed Energetics Health and Fitness. “We wanted to create something that was a little more luxurious for our clients, while also providing a fitness program that they could hold us accountable for,” says Peck. “We design a different program for every single one of our clients. Everything is 100 per cent individualized and scientifically backed up.” At the first consultation, clients will perform various forms of fitness assessments, and these assessments will help establish a baseline and provide feedback about their overall health. One device in particular is their bioimpedence analysis device, which will provide an accurate reading of a client’s body composition. The staff at Energetics recognizes that every body is different and that everyone will have different goals and ways of achieving those goals. However, some things will remain the same — every workout is individualized one-on-one training, they are based on scientific research about muscle physiology, and they are always short and intense (while keeping the safety and limitations of each client in mind, of course).
“We are passionate about what we do, and the changes we have made in the health and lives of our clients,” says Peck. “Exercising with a fitness professional can be a very intimate service. As a gym is an intimidating environment for many, working with a fitness professional can aid a client in feeling comfortable about improving their health and help provide them with new strategies for healthier eating and exercise.”
As many people know, there are strong benefits of leading a healthy and active lifestyle, and according to Antoine, “beyond the physical there are positive relationships between a person’s cognitive ability and the amount of resistance training they participate in. But above all else, we believe that in order for a healthy lifestyle to be lived, balance and consistency must be maintained. We help our clients find balance and our training methods stay on the
forefront of exercise science, while maintaining education.” There is no doubt if you sign up at Energetics you will immediately feel like you are part of the Energetics team. Everyone is welcome, and there is a sense of a community feel within the facility itself. “We love Kingston, and want to support other local businesses in the area as well,” says Antoine.

“Our philosophy is that success derives from shorter more focused workouts, less frequently. We design our sessions to be time efficient and intense with adequate recovery time. There are many benefits to short, focused and intense exercise sessions,” says Peck. “One of them being the reduced amount of time a client has to spend at the gym, and another is to maximize results in the most time efficient manner. We specialize in high intensity resistance training, with a strong focus on preventative and rehabilitative exercise. We want our clients to be pain free. It’s not just about building muscle, it’s about designing a program that will increase functional mobility.”
“There is also an in-house registered massage therapist,” adds Antoine, “as we believe it’s important to create a multifaceted approach to healthcare by having relationships amongst other health care professionals and athletic professionals in the city. Each client is unique in their body mechanics, limitations, health issues and goals, therefore a network of athletic professionals, chiropractors, physiotherapists, and doctors will provide our clients with an elite team of experts with vast knowledge to assist in injury prevention and rehabilitation, manual therapy, pain management, or to become a better athlete in a particular sport.”
Although this may sound like a very intense workout, Antoine assures they assess each client’s limitations within the first consultation and constantly re-evaluate the program on a monthly basis. “It’s a very controlled environment where a client can feel comfortable testing their own limitations in a safe way… safety is paramount.”
The fitness professionals at Energetics are extremely knowledgeable and constantly challenge themselves with continuous education modules to develop their skills, and become more proficient in the nutrition and exercise sciences.
Resistance training is not the only perk that comes with a membership at Energetics Health and Fitness. There is also a spacious membership lounge with a cosy fireplace along with a complimentary juice bar that includes smoothies, protein shakes, coffee and tea. “We value our clients and want to create an atmosphere where people feel comfortable to chat, and it’s not just an in and out,” says Peck.
Mark is very knowledgeable in all aspects of fitness and training. In the last 4 years I have seen a transformation in myself, and I am in better shape today then I was 30 years ago. I am pushed every session but always in a safe and controlled environment that has proven great results. Energetics is more than just a place to train, all the staff care about your overall health and wellness. – Alan Kennedy
Watching clients leave Energetics Health and Fitness, one can feel the comradery and satisfaction felt between the trainer and client. The client is chatting with the trainers as if they have been friends for years and they leave the facility with a smile on their face. And why not? They have just had a personalized workout that will guarantee results.

While these words could apply to many pursuits, Magda Sosin, a woman with 20 years of experience in the aesthetic industry has made this her mantra for developing her business New Path Spa, a place where beauty and quality meld and continue to develop. Magda’s services include extensive spa treatments such as Oxygen and Dermalogical facial treatments, a variety of manicures and pedicures, massage, body treatments, waxing, threading, microblading, eyelash extensions. Magda believes in treating the whole person...easing the stresses we collect in our day to day lives so she, ReFINEdKINGSTON
and her staff go the extra mile; for example, a 60 minute facial includes a foot soak and massage. There is a misconception, she believes, that we view spa as a luxury, when in fact, it is an essential tool for taking care of oneself, increasing confidence, and is almost a preventative health measure, “like a vitamin”. In a society where we are constantly on the go, she believes we should be regularly making time to take care of ourselves in body, mind, and spirit. New Path Spa provides a facility and expertise to ensure that clients have an opportunity to relax, re-new, re-charge and re-gain confidence.
Being obsessed with quality, Magda Sosin is concerned that there are few regulations in the spa industry especially when it comes to new techniques and services such as micro-blading. To ensure that her clients get safe, high quality work, she is certified as a reflexologist, certified in classic and volume eyelash extensions and has received training with Ayurveda Aveda beyond all her previous spa training and experience. She has also taken a course in Blood Borne Pathogens, a prerequisite to micropigmentation, following a microblading course in Poland and two with Phobrows. Microblading is a technique where clients who experience alopecia or have thin, sparse, or poorly shaped eyebrows can obtain beautiful, properly proportioned and placed brows with manual tattooing. “It is considered semi-permanent as deposit of the pigments penetrate into the epidermis area, using a hand tool with very fine, tightly fused together needles.” Each fine hair is drawn on after extensive measuring and planning. The results are remarkable and natural and Magda views this as a way for clients to feel good about themselves, confidant to face the world. One client who has struggled with alopecia writes this testimonial:
“About four years ago, most of my eyebrows fell out... for no known reason. My health was normal and I had no illness. I hid behind bangs and constantly worried that my brushed on brows hadn’t disappeared for years. I don’t consider myself a vain person, but having no real eyebrows caused me to feel very self-conscious about my appearance. I researched the procedure micro-blading and visited Magda at New Path Spa. I was immediately impressed with her knowledge and training and decided to have the procedure. Magda’s calm, confident and professional approach was reassuring while I underwent the treatment. The pain was only a slight discomfort and the procedure was completed in a few hours. I was completely overwhelmed with the result and shed a few tears when I first saw my new eyebrows. Magda ensured I understood the follow-up care and contacted me to make sure all was going well... My only regret is that I didn’t do this procedure sooner.” Gillian White, an associate at Scotia Bank, comes regularly since New Path opened in 2015. New Path Spa is her “favourite spot... it’s so friendly and you can book on-line, so they’re always available.” If she has a half an hour free she will come for a manicure or pedicure. But she says, “facials are the best!” When asked about technician preferences, Gillian replied, “I like all the girls, they are
experts in all areas”. Magda Sosin speaks highly of her staff as she describes them. Nida Butt, who has worked with Magda from the beginning, is “famous for her threading among Kingstonians” and has a passion for the art of aesthetic and make-up. Chelsea Wolfe is “loved by her clients for detailed focus in providing the best services possible and passion in using Jane Iredale Makeup.” Allisyn Chase, a young, vibrant aesthetician is passionate about her work and finds joy and satisfaction in doing eyelash extensions. Brooke Macdonald is an RMT (registered massage therapist) with 15 years experience and “magic, healing hands and a fun personality.” The spa itself is as welcoming as Magda and her staff. Magda designed and decorated the main room to be bright and clean with elements of nature, gorgeous birch tree wall paper, and touches of opulence. Sleek, white modern furniture and sophisticated wall treatments are illuminated by chandeliers. Treatment rooms are soothing and enveloping with warm colours and wood finishes. The chairs for pedicures sit under big, cheerful letters playfully exclaiming “Hands & Feet”. Customers are embraced by the hospitality offered in warm greetings and complimentary beverages. The salon offers a display of high quality products for sale including Luzerne, an organic line,
Dermalogical, and Jane Iredale Makeup, as well as Extreme Lashes to maintain lash extensions.
New Path Spa is offering a spring special of full set Xtreme Lashes with Allisyn for $75 50% OFF REGULAR PRICE. For someone who has never ventured into a spa or anyone looking for extra quality and specialization, New Path Spa is a good choice. Magda says, “whatever path you are walking, you’re made to feel welcome at New Path Spa...We want people to feel comfortable, like a family” and to never feel rushed, but receive relaxation, respect, and quality.

A traditional symbol of love and affection, rose cultivation began more than 5,000 years ago. Ancient Greeks, Egyptians, Mayans and Native Americans used them as a highly valued medicinal plant — powers they still contain today. From internal medicine to beauty applications, roses are a botanical powerhouse.

ROSE OIL AND ROSE HIP SEED OIL
Bulgaria produces about 70 per cent of the world’s rose oil. It takes tens of thousands of rose blossoms — picked as they unfurl at dawn — to yield one ounce of rose essential oil. Known for its antiseptic and astringent qualities, rose oils are perfect for evening out complexions, rejuvenating skin cells and reducing dark spots. Celebrities such as Victoria Secret model Miranda Kerr and actress Rose Byrne swear by the plant’s power to brighten and soothe sensitive skin. Unlike other oils, rose oils are lightweight and non-greasy, absorbing easily into skin without leaving a sticky residue. Containing essential fatty acids, rose oil is great for moisturizing winter worn itchy scalps as well. You can use rose oil to treat scars, acne, burns and reduce wrinkles, as vitamin C is responsible for collagen production.
ROSE HIPS
Native Americans traditionally ate rose hips — the fruit produced once a rose has gone to seed — as a potent source of vitamins in the winter. These glowing red pods are packed with vitamins C, A and B complex as well as calcium, iron, selenium and antioxidants. Rose hips have been widely acclaimed as a rheumatoid arthritis treatment, increasing mobility and reducing pain due to their antiinflammatory qualities. Antioxidants have been proven to reduce cholesterol levels and rose hips have also been used in studies to regulate sugar levels in diabetic patients.
ROSE WATER
A more affordable option to rose oils, rose water helps hydrate, refresh, soothe and cleanse. It’s an ideal makeup remover or aftershave treatment and acts as a conditioner when added to a hair washing routine. In a travel size spray bottle, rose water is a quick and easy way to refresh dull, caking makeup. The same spray can be used as a quick and easy way to refresh bed linens between washings. The aromatic value of roses shouldn’t be discounted either. Used to relax at the end of the day rose has a positive effect on treating depression. The scent is also the aroma most commonly used in modern perfumery.
MORE ROSE FACTS:
• The oldest fossilized imprint of a rose was found on a slate deposit found in Florissant, Colorado and is estimated to be 35 million years old. • The rose is the birth flower of June. • Damask rose, Rosa Canina and Rosa Gallica are cultivated to extract rose essence, which is an important ingredient in the cosmetic industry. • There are more than 100 rose species worldwide. • As perennials, roses can survive for extremely long periods of time. For example, a large rose bush has covered the wall of the Cathedral of Hildesheim in Germany for more than 1,000 years.
Rose hips can be turned into syrups, jellies, oils, powders and teas. Rose tea can be a simple addition to your daily routine, offering a boost of essential vitamins. It’s a perfect way to relax at the end of the day. The tea has also been linked to reduced symptoms from menstrual cramps.

Tips to Improve
YOUR WELL-BEING By Amanda Hookey
Life is busy, but taking care of yourself needs to be a priority! Your overall lifestyle can be improved with simple routine changes that will boost your mood, add enjoyment and help remove toxins from your body. By simply tweaking your exercise level and diet you can improve your health tenfold. Here are five simple ways.

ReFINEdKINGSTON
Inhale. Exhale. Outdoors.
Drink. Drink. Repeat.
Get outside and explore the wide-open landscapes this wonderful province has to offer. Not only will it allow you to connect with nature, but it will provide exercise as well. Adding 30 minutes of exercise to your daily routine can reduce stress and improve your mood — so why not head outside for it? The sounds in nature induce a natural Zen-like environment, creating a therapeutic balance between the two. Go hiking. Meditate in nature. Inhale fresh air. Clear your head.
Water is a necessity of life, but are you drinking enough? If you are dehydrated, your body will send warnings signs that cause pain and ailments. Drinking anywhere from eight to 10 glasses of water a day optimizes bodily function and helps prevent kidney and liver failure by flushing the digestive system
Now is the time to take responsibility for your health! Become mindful about what you ingest and what techniques you use to get exercise and reduce stress. Remember, life is all about balance, and routines you start today may reduce your risk of illness tomorrow.
Eat. Be Merry.
Ingest. Detoxify. Release.
Laugh. Release. Remedy.
Quinoa, salmon and seaweed are just a few superfoods that pack a nutritional punch. When implemented into your diet they can boost your metabolism, assist with mental clarity and help you reach your optimal weight. By reducing empty calories, you will feel fuller longer. Next time you’re at the market, stock up!
Detoxifying is a proven technique to eliminate harmful toxins from your body, which improves mood and body function. Drinking tea has been known to cleanse the body internally of toxins, and according to Dr. Iman A. Hakim, director of Health Promotional Sciences at the Arizona Cancer Center, “green tea is rich in polyphenols, which are antioxidants and inducers of phase-2 detoxification enzymes.” Phase-2 enzymes filter harmful substances from your liver and facilitate the removal of carcinogens.
Laughter is one way to brighten your mood, reduce stress and release endorphins. “Your sense of humor is one of the most powerful tools you have to make certain that your daily mood and emotional state support good health,” says Paul E. McGhee, Ph.D, developmental psychologist and author of The Laughter Remedy. So, if you find yourself grumpy, change your perspective and find something to laugh about. By releasing those mood stabilizing endorphins, you’ll be a happier you.

MJ’s Beauty Bar has a vast array of beauty treatments available. Clients can begin with a complimentary consultation to discuss issues and needs. Whether one is looking for reducing fine lines and wrinkles, minimizing skin spots and sun damage, eliminating acne scars or sagging, MJ has a solution.
MJ Gooding’s love for aesthetics began when she was introduced to Avon at eight years old. Since then, she has devoted much of her life to learning about the science of beauty, and shares her passion by teaching medical aesthetics through her owned and operated Skincare Academy. MJ has worked as a medical aesthetician serving the Toronto community for 19 years. This year, after falling in love with Kingston, she has expanded her business and formed a strategic alliance with Kingston Threading, and is now open for business on Brock Street.
MJ is a certified Botox injector for clients who would benefit from an injectable filler to target volume loss, reduce wrinkles or to gain lip enhancement. MJ also provides clients with Fractional Laser Resurfacing, a treatment that delivers light in “microbeams” to initiate a process that forms new tissue. Alumier MD Peels and AFA Clay Peels promote smoother, more youthful skin tone with the removal of superficial damaged skin. Microdermabrasion and hydroderm abrasion are also available to treat mild acne issues, minimize aging skin effects and to stimulate collagen.
Cryotherapy is the latest method for removing those annoying love handles or “fat pockets” that sit on the abdomen, inner thighs and hips. As an alternative to liposuction, “Cool Slimming” is a noninvasive, non-painful treatment that actually freezes unwanted fat cells, allowing them to crystalize and then be removed by the body as waste. Customers can also undergo simple cosmetic procedures to eliminate superficial spider veins and unwanted blemishes. Laser hair removal is another available option at MJ’s. MJ’s Beauty Bar is also a place to enjoy customized facials, receive eyebrow and eyelash tinting, as well as eyelash extensions. “Permanent” makeup application is also available, which basically involves the process of applying pigment to the dermal layer of the skin to create natural looking brows, eyeliner, lip-liner and shading. MJ has experience in treating men and women of all ages and ethnic backgrounds, and has helped resolve skin and beauty issues of a vast array of customers over the years. She finds there are three basic
categories of clientele. Those in their 20s to 40s who are interested in fashion and style, and looking for ways to enhance their beauty. They often take advantage of fillers and enhancements and are using these treatments as part of a health and lifestyle regimen. The 50 plus group are looking for ways to stay fresh and current in their careers and battling the inevitable effects of aging. She says the third group includes people seeking a more dramatic change in appearance, without necessarily taking invasive measures. Many of her clients experience what she refers to as that “Mastercard moment” when they discover how a simple treatment transforms how they feel about themselves. They move out of depression or insecurity to enjoy confidence and increased self-esteem. Those moments are priceless. Leslie Jones, a client for more than 10 years, says: “MJ is a ray of sunshine who exudes a very professional but friendly vibe. She is a very talented technician. I have been receiving Botox and filler injections over the years, and I am thrilled with the results. She has given me a more youthful appearance, which in turn has
given me more confidence. Everyone asks how I stay so youthful, and it is due to MJ and her skill with fillers and Botox! I would highly recommend a consult with her.”

Stellar Season Ahead for the Kingston Symphony and 1000 Islands Playhouse

Thousand Islands Playhouse Each year, the Thousand Islands Playhouse entertains more than 44,000 tourists and area residents with dynamic, superb performances.
incredible. They will also love the music, history and technology intertwined through this piece.”
Forty-four thousand is a large number, to be certain, but it should not come as much of a surprise to anyone who’s had the chance to take in a show at this charming waterfront theatre.
Following that is the red-hot rock and roll musical Million Dollar Quartet, running June 16 – July 15 in the Springer Theatre. This show features a soundtrack of hit songs by Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Elvis Presley. “You can’t help but hum along,” says Corcoran of the muchanticipated musical.
The 2017 spring and summer season promises to be as equally dazzling as it has been in previous years, with a tremendous lineup of shows planned by the theatre’s mega-talented artistic director, Ashlie Corcoran.
The Thousand Islands Playhouse’s second venue, the Firehall Theatre, opens with Maggie & Pierre, running July 7 – 30. This one-woman show tells the story behind Margaret and Pierre Trudeau’s relationship, Canada’s most famous romance.
“I spend all year thinking and planning and programming,” says Corcoran, who is celebrating her fifth season as artistic director with the Playhouse.
In the height of the summer, Leading Ladies will take over the Springer Theatre from July 21 – Aug. 19 with hilarious gender-bending hijinks.
The 2017 season opens with the stage documentary Boom in the Springer Theatre from May 24 – June 10. This one-man show created by Rick Miller chronicles the iconic moments that shaped the Baby Boom generation through music, masterful impressions, and touching personal stories. “I saw this show at the NAC and just loved it,” says Corcoran. “Rick Miller is a genius. I know our audience is going to love his charm and talent; his impersonations are
Produced in association with Western Canada Theatre, Kamloops, BC, Only Drunks And Children Tell The Truth will play in the Firehall Theatre from Aug. 11 – 26. The heartwarming comedy tells the story of an Indigenous woman struggling to reconnect with her birth family.

funniest play, this was the very first piece produced at the Playhouse in 1982. “I am so pleased that it will be part of this year’s program,” says Corcoran. Closing the Firehall Theatre season will be the comedy Mustard, playing Sept. 1 – 17. This fast-paced piece was a smash hit with Toronto audiences in 2016. The season closes with a comedy by playwright Mark Crawford, The Birds And The Bees. This sexy rural farce runs in the Springer Theatre from Sept. 22 – Oct. 15. “I am excited to celebrate our 35th anniversary season,” says Corcoran, who points out that in part to honour the theatre’s 35th anniversary, numerous Kingston artists will appear on stage. “I can’t tell you who they are yet,” she says. “But I know people will be excited to see some hometown favourites.” Be sure to set some time aside to take in one (or all!) of the productions at the Playhouse this season. We promise you won’t regret it. “Gananoque is a stunning place,” says Corcoran. “Not only will you see some world-class theatre, you will also have the opportunity to sip some wine while standing on the shores of the St. Lawrence River. It doesn’t get much better than that!”

The Kingston Symphony With music director Evan Mitchell at the helm, the Kingston Symphony continues to electrify audiences each and every time its musicians take the stage. Its performances throughout spring and summer 2017 will be no different. “We try and pace ourselves throughout the season to make sure all of our performances are scheduled to maximize the audience’s takeaway,” says Mitchell. “As we get later on into the season however, we start to think about ending things with a bang, and some of our most powerful and amazing concerts happen in the spring and summer period.” While Mitchell is undeniably enthusiastic about each upcoming performance, the fourth Masterworks concert March 5 promises to be particularly special, he says. Given that the music was selected around the thematic idea of birdsong, the symphony partnered with Canadian artist named Lorraine Roy, whose medium is textiles and fibres. She will have an exhibition of her work in the lobby, and showcase the three original works she created specifically for this concert. “These works were inspired by the three pieces we will be performing, and they are stunning,” emphasizes Mitchell. “This is going to be a wonderful afternoon
of great music, fine art and beautiful inspiration.’ In June, runners and walkers will have their annual chance to see if they can complete an eight-kilometre race before the symphony finishes their live performance of Beethoven symphonies. Aptly named “Beat Beethoven,” it’s a smashing good time, says Evans, and everyone looks forward to it each year.
to know more about the music coming into the performance, the symphony has a whole series of podcasts, videos and preconcert talks to get you up to speed in no time flat, says Evans. For a full list of performances and dates, be sure to visit kingstonsymphony.on.ca.
If you’ve never seen the symphony perform, you’re missing out on one of our city’s greatest treasures; its performances are truly something to behold. “We present some of the greatest art ever created, and we perform it live, right in front of you. It’s absolutely the best way to experience music,” says Evans. “While the product speaks for itself,” he continues, “those who are a little wary or unsure or nervous about coming to the symphony for the first time, we make it very easy. If you’re concerned about what to wear or how to act, it’s simple: wear whatever you feel comfortable in, be it T-shirt and jeans or a suit or dress. If you’re nervous about when to clap, you just have to wait for the conductor to turn around and take a bow.” Even better? Ticket prices are often less than a night at the movies. Anything’s Possible at Improbable Escapes By Faith Woodland Photos Stephen Wild
What do you get when you lock a 15-year-old girl in a room with her mom and take away their cell phones? Bickering, arguing, exasperation… murder? Or just a whole lot of fun, laughter and cooperation? If said room happens to be one of Improbable Escapes puzzle rooms, anything is possible.
My daughter and I had the opportunity to do just that. We signed up for “Love Letter Lockdown,” one of Improbable Escapes’ live action adventures. Upon arrival, we entered a shabby chic lobby area decorated with rustic, funky furnishings. There we met our host and surrendered our coats, purses and cell phones. Our host then described a school romance themed scenario and locked us into a classroom, where we had 60 minutes to break out by finding clues, solving puzzles and unlocking padlocks to discover a hidden exit. The room was set up like an elementary classroom, complete with chalkboards, posters, desks and backpacks. We had to explore our surroundings, think “outside the box,” and work together to make progress. The challenges were clever and creative, visually appealing and tactile.

Improbable Escapes is Kingston's most recent phenomenon. Created in 2015 by Melissa Eapen and Emma Rochon, two entrepreneurs from Toronto, the business has been very popular, already seeing more than 400 players some weeks! There is a primary facility located in La Salle Mews with two games running at any given time, and numerous pop-up adventures in various locations throughout Kingston and the surrounding area. Fort Henry, Murney Tower and Belleview House have all been used as game sites. Each game has a completely different theme and scenario. “Love Letter Lockdown” is a playful, school day adventure suitable for all ages. “Coroners Report,” located in the dark basement of The Mews, is foreboding and somewhat frightening. While not suitable for children, it’s a favourite for fans of crime drama. The pop-up games include historical elements and all games bring in educational applications. The settings are creatively designed and technologically savvy. New games are created every few months and provide the perfect venue for date nights, birthday parties, family fun nights and bachelor/bachelorette parties. Improbable Escapes is suitable for corporate team-building as well, and their development group can provide analysis and workshops that are custom tailored to your team’s needs.
Improbable Escapes employs 18 people who create, host and develop new games and ventures. The team has recently established an Improbable Escapes League for enthusiasts who want to stay apprised of current opportunities. Upon joining the league, players receive an Improbable Escapes box, which includes a t-shirt and 10 per cent off all future game plays — this is an advantage, because one can easily become addicted to escape room activities! For those of us who grew up reading Nancy Drew mysteries and Choose Your Own Adventure novels, or are wanna-be CSI agents, Improbable Escapes satisfies that love of mystery solving and amateur sleuthing. The game allows a player to become a detective or a criminal investigator for an hour, and ultimately, a kid again. Guests will be surprised and delighted at every new discovery and successful puzzle solved.

Mother Theresa famously said, “I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.” Dress for Success, a local non-profit group with a dedicated board of directors and volunteer base, echoes this powerful statement. The group tirelessly works to change the lives of women in Kingston who are on a journey toward self-sufficiency. Dress for Success is part of a larger global movement for change, empowering women to obtain safer and better futures. The program has two parts. The first is Suiting, a program to help women obtain what they need for an interview — from clothing to confidence. Once they find employment, they are able to return for the apparel and accessories they need to enter the workforce. The second part of the program is a Career Center, which offers women professional development resources and guidance to enhance their skills and explore career opportunities. Operating out of a small boutique on Princess Street, women are referred to the program from various agencies throughout the city. Once referred, they can then call and book an appointment with the organization’s executive director, Lindsay MacDonald. “The Dress for Success boutique is not only a safe and inviting place for clients to get suited, but it serves as a meeting place for professional development workshops,” says MacDonald. “The most rewarding thing to have come from our program is the sisterhood of support our clients have given to each other. It’s a place where they feel welcome and inspired to share and learn.” The footwear, apparel and accessories that fill the boutique are all destined to find a new purpose — to help build a woman’s self esteem and confidence, and empower her to find employment and ultimately independence. “The Kingston community has given us tremendous support over the years to help us grow to where we are today,” says MacDonald. “With donations of clothing, volunteer hours and financial support, Dress for Success has been able to establish roots in the community and a foundation to move forward. It is a true representation of women helping women!” Become involved in Dress for Success by joining them as a volunteer. There are many ways you can help support their clients as they work toward goals in work and life. Volunteering is an opportunity to make a difference in your community, and in this case the lives of women and their families.

Kelly: Its your night out. Own it. Own your beauty. When is the last time you got dressed up, actually blow dried your hair and put on makeup other than a few wands of your mascara?...Don’t even get me started on wiping the dust off your heels... You deserve this. Look in that mirror in front of you and find you.
Kelly: If you are shy or nervous about meeting new people, fear not. You are already walking into a situation where you have something in common with everyone there...we are mama’s...and we deserve some fun. You will find like minded women around you. The first step is always the hardest, so trust the process. You need this. Plus, we are really fun.
Erica: Alright ladies- time to put AWAY the leggings.. I know they make you feel good! BUT it's Mama's Night Out, we don't dress for our partners we dress for ourselves so pull out that outfit that makes you feel amazing OR if you can, buy something new!
Erica: Find your crew and enjoy them! It took Kelly and I awhile to connect and now that we have-we understand the importance of connecting with people who give you the freedom to be you! We are DETERMINED to help moms find their tribe.

The Rule of Two
Release Yourself
Kelly: Let’s face it. We have to Mom in the morning. We don’t want to tarnish our good times with an ugly hangover or sleep deprivation. We have the most important job in the world. We have to Mom. It’s important to support each other in having fun, but also support each other in making sure our night ends on a high note. Drink Water. Take your vitamins. Wash your face. Go to sleep! Dream about our next outing!
Kelly: Its exactly how it sounds... We always include two things to do on our nights out. One could be dinner and drinks (always drinks), and a group activity. In May, we are mixing it up with a Season premiere viewing party of The Bachelorette at a special venue. There will be something for everyone.
Erica: If you are going to go out-no need to dwell on what is going on at home! Whoever you have asked to watch your babies for the night is PERFECTLY fine. Don't check your Nest camera, stop texting your hubby and trust!
Erica: YES! We all like to have fun-but we still have to get up with our babies in the morning and get home safely to our families. We hope to see you at one of our events! Stay Tuned for event announcements.
Kelly: And, get off your phones... unless you are taking a selfie with your new bestie. Be present. This is about you.

PUTTING THE
BACK IN YOUTH HOCKEY By Jemma Dooreleyers Photography: Georegtte Photography
78
ReFINEdKINGSTON
After retiring from the game he has loved for nearly three decades, current secondary assistant coach of the Kingston Frontenacs Phil Mangan now endures a journey to rebuild the passion within the game amongst youth hockey players. He says coaches in youth hockey are more focused on perfecting strategy then igniting a desire and passion for the game — a game Mangan knows very well. His goal is simple… to put the fun back into youth hockey and he’s doing just that with his organization PHP Hockey. PHP Hockey is built to provide a positive hockey experience for all members and participants by organizing fun, affordable, and competitive three on three tournaments, leagues, and PA day camps for youth hockey players, specifically ages five to 12.
Mangan was captain of the QMJHL Moncton Wildcat’s before moving on to play for the St. Francis Xavier men’s hockey team competing in a national championship in his third year. Following university, he went on to play pro in Europe as well as in the ECHL. After all this time on the ice, he says the most important lesson he has learned from the game was deciding what attitude to take on in life. “If you have a positive outlook throughout the whole game, you will feel good no matter what the result,” he says. He says one of the main differences with three-on-three hockey is that the kids can make their own decisions and discover what positions and playing strategies work best for them. The environment is also much more laid back and there is less pressure to be perfect, which can negatively affect the mental health of the child and compromise their love for hockey. Mangan believes children can learn this same lesson through three-on-three hockey.
He says when children have space and freedom to explore; they can determine their attitude of the game. They have a chance to really take control of their actions and feel they are doing as much as they possibly can to play the game they want to play, instead of being told what to do by a coach or other team members. Established in 2009, Mangan’s mission with PHP is to grow the game at a grassroots level through developing programs that ensure young players leave feeling confident and wanting more. We want to first invite players of all levels to participate, and then secondly achieve confidence within them to continue on in hockey. Building an environment that allows skills to grow will ultimately lead to more opportunities within the game. Mangan found his passion for hockey by learning to love the game in a relaxed and fun setting. If he can bring that passion to children for the rest of their lives, whether it takes them to the NHL or to a frozen pond in the winter, his goal will be accomplished.

TO REMEMBER The mission statement of all Boys and Girls Clubs is “to provide a safe, supportive place where children and youth can experience new opportunities, overcome barriers, build positive relationships and develop confidence and skills for life.” This mission is upheld daily by creating as many opportunities as possible that provide Kingston children and youth with safe places to be, constant interactions with positive role models, and a variety of ways to gain confidence, learn skills, be creative and realize their potential. Summertime is a time for carefree fun and play. A time to explore, make new friends and discover new adventures. The teams at the Boys and Girls Club of Kingston and Area are dedicated to providing Summer Camps for children ages four and up. These summer camps are designed to be both educational and exciting. Families have peace of mind knowing their children are enjoying summer under the guidance and careful supervision of High Five certified leaders. Each of our leaders is a graduate from a child related field. All camps are built around the core values of the Boys and Girls Club of Kingston and Area, such as inclusion, self-acceptance, fitness, nutrition, safety and empowerment. Boys and Girls Club has summer camps in three locations: Linklater Public School, Robert Meek Community Youth Centre and the West End Hub. Each
location offers fun interactive weeks with many different themes to get all campers involved in something they enjoy, or the opportunity to try something new in a safe supportive environment. Similar to the club’s after school programs, summer camp offers programs related to nutrition, health and wellness, the arts and physical activity. With exciting themes such as AquaFun, Get Messy, Jetsetters and many more, campers are encouraged to use their imagination while participating in structured activities. Boys and Girls Club of Kingston and Area also host many partnership camps with the Kingston Clippers, The Rowing Club and Under The Cross Equestrian and many more. These camps will have a half-day of Boys and Girls Club activities and a half-day of specific training in either soccer, golf or horseback riding with the partner organization and their staff. Specific to the West End Hub is Bricks 4 Kidz summer camps. Bricks 4 Kidz is a hands-on camp where students design and build machines, catapults, pyramids, derbycarts, buildings and other constructions out of LEGO® bricks. While exploring engineering, architecture and physics, students will develop problem solving and critical thinking skills - STEM. All campers are reminded to bring along a towel and swimsuit, as an added feature to these amazing camps is the opportunity to swim in the beautiful 25m pool in the west end.

Rhythm Dance Center
Centre of Dancers’ Universe by Jemma Dooreleyers photography Suzy Lamont
Dance gives them a place to be comfortable — a safe place. When things go wrong, and they are down on themselves, dancers can come to a place where they know they belong, will not be judged and can let go and dance to the music.” – Melissa Ward, Studio Director of Rhythm Dance Center As one watches dancers stretch before class with music booming in the background, it looks like a typical dance studio. However, if you stop any dancer — whether they are three or 23 — they will tell you this place is so much more. This is a home away from home where bonds are formed, creativity and confidence is contagious, memories are made and a love for an art form is shared and developed. Belle Dodd, a recent graduate and creator of the Belle Dodd Scholarship, can attest to this. ReFINEd chatted with Dodd about her years at Rhythm Dance Center.

Q. When did you start dancing? A. I started when I was almost four and my dance classes ended when I was 17. Q. Now that you have graduated, what is your perspective on dance? A. I’m now dancing for emotion instead of just technique. It makes me realize how much it did for me and how much it has changed me. Q. What did dance do for you? A. I’m still dancing now, so it has given me an outlet for emotion and stress. It allows me to take my mind off reality. It kick started me to be active and gave me a second family. Q. What are your favourite memories from dance? A. My all-time favourite is probably comp parties, where we got to see all of the other dances and support each other. Another good one was receiving the Team Spirit Award as a studio at a dance competition. I know we have a lot of team spirit, but to know other people witness the love we have for each other and for dance was really great to see. Q. How does dance build confidence in young children? A. The support from the rest of the studio not only builds dance confidence, but also personal confidence. The little awards that are handed out at the end of the year, such as Most Improved Award, help because it shows that the staff and students acknowledge your hard work. Q. What life skills did dance help you develop? A. Dance helped me a lot with multitasking. Balancing schoolwork and dance just became something I was used to. It helped with stress relief and a lot with creativity. It also helped with team building, and made it easier to form bonds with other people because I’m so used to working closely with others. Q. Discuss the Belle Dodd Scholarship and why it was created. A. Dance was a massive part of my life, so the point of the scholarship was to make it easier for other dancers to do more classes and do that extra solo, because it can be expensive. Also, it is important to acknowledge spirit and true passion for dance. And of course, I wanted to give back to the studio because it gave me so much. 1. Use seasonal ingredients. With spring just starting to bloom, we still have a lot of winter vegetables available to us — root vegetables such as carrots, sweet potato, beets and potatoes, alongside greenhouse vegetables like cucumbers, tomatoes and peppers. But come April, expect to see asparagus, radishes, sprouts, rhubarb and peas coming into season, so make sure to get them on your plate! 2. Prep ingredients ahead. Save yourself valuable time in the evening by prepping all your ingredients on Sunday. Vegetables such as chopped kale, grated beets and sliced radishes will keep all week long in their own containers. Cook a large batch of quinoa or brown rice to add some substance to your salad, and keep a container of rinsed canned chickpeas in the fridge for an easy protein addition. This way, at night, all you have to do is buildyour bowls and dig in! 3. Make dressings at the start of the week. Making your own dressings may sound daunting, but once you start you’ll never go back to store-bought. Start simple by combining one part acid (such as balsamic vinegar or lemon juice) to two parts oil (like olive oil). Keep it in a mason jar in the fridge, and just shake it before dressing your salads. You can add build on the dressing as you need it, by adding honey to a lemon vinaigrette to dress a cobb salad, or add mustard to a balsamic vinaigrette to top a Niçoise salad. 4. Use whatever is in the fridge. The golden rule of salad making: anything goes. The best part of salads is that you can add so many things to eat and it will still taste great — leftover chicken, roasted root vegetables, grapes from the kids’ lunches, steamed broccoli or a can of tuna are great additions! 5. Include different textures. Avoid boring salads by including a variety of textures. Go for crunchy nuts, chewy cranberries and creamy goat cheese to make your salad pop!

Red, White, Rosé & Sparkling Wine. Prince Edward County became Ontario’s newest wine appellation (VQA) and northern most region in 2007. It offers some of Canada’s, and the world’s, best soils and growing conditions for cool climate wines. PEC soils are a clay and sandy loam with shale (calcareous rock) fragments through out, sitting on a bed of limestone. The fragmented rock allows the soils great drainage, root penetration for older vines and provides substantial heat during the key spring and summer months. PEC’s cool climate for growing grapes and minerality produces wine of complex and balanced flavours with higher levels of acidity. These wines are exceptional when paired with food.
Ian Nicholls Sommelier, County Sips Wine Tours Ian’s love for “The County” began many years ago, as the vines where being planted in the early 2000’s. He has had the pleasure of tasting and watching as The County matures.

The County has been growing in leaps and bounds over the past decade, featuring more than 40 wineries, cider houses, distilleries and a growing number of craft breweries. We are privileged to be able to visit, enjoy the knowledge and harvest in this one of a kind region.

Has it all! Cool climate grape varietals include: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Reisling, Cabernet France and Gamay. Hybrid styles, Vidal, Baco Noir, Frontenac, Frontenac Gris and Marquette are also found throughout PEC. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir have become the darlings of PEC and Ontario. The County’s many microclimates allow the wines to have their own specific aromas and flavours. These wines have garnered attention from around the world.
In 2016, Rosehall Run’s 2013 JCR Chardonnay won the Silver Medal at Chardonnay-du-Monde, France. And, many PEC wines have achieved outstanding reviews by premier wine writers such as Jancis Robinson, Matt Kramer and Tony Aspler. Last year’s growing season was exceptional, featuring a long, hot, dry summer. The resulting 2016 vintage wines are starting to appear. In late March, Rosehall Run released their 2016 Hungry Point Unoaked Chardonnay, VQA Prince Edward County. A wine of medium body with bright citrusy aromas; flavours through the mid-palate are lemon zest, pear and peach with hints of grapefruit lingering on the finish. It’s superbly well balanced. I love the tree fruit aromatics and flavours of this appetizing Chardonnay. It is perfect to enjoy with cream pasta dishes, soft cheeses and grilled pork chops. The conditions of PEC are also ideal for creating sparkling wine. Many of The County’s wineries produce a “bubbly” or two. These can be made in the charmat method; a secondary fermentation takes place in the steel tank, or traditional method; where secondary fermentation occurs in the bottle over a longer period of time, 24-36 months. Noted wines include: Hinterland Wine Company - Les Etoils, White Cap, Ancestral, Borealis; Lighthall Vineyard - Progression; Huff Estates - Cuvèe Peter F Huff and The Grange - Traditional Method Brut.

MOTORING & RECREATION
Make Waves A
ccording to the National Marine Manufacturers Association, recreational boating, with $3 billion in total sales, remains a large part of the Canadian economy. If you’re ready to increase those sales in 2017, read on. We’ve handpicked a few of our favourite ways to ensure endless fun on the water this summer. High Performance Boats If you have a need for speed, high performance boats are for you. According to Discover Boating, a national public awareness effort managed by the National Marine Manufacturers Association, a highperformance boat is perfect for two things: looking good and moving fast. “Highhorsepower engines — often two or three throaty stern-drive or sometimes outboard power plants — combine with long, sleek
90

V or catamaran hulls to speed these boats across inland lakes and through ocean swells,” says the association. Depending on what you’re after, there are different styles to choose from. “In some performance boats, driver and passengers are seated in a relatively small cockpit behind a long foredeck. In others, the cockpit is completely enclosed,” says Discover Boating. Oftentimes, these boats are used for racing; the 1000 Islands Poker Run is popular for many performance boat owners in our area. But it’s not just about speed. If you’re also a fan of luxury, you’re in luck: many highperformance boats have it in spades. From sumptuous upholstery to opulent sleeping accommodations, these boats are the epitome of true extravagance.
Deck Boats and Bowriders If you want a versatile boat perfect for the whole family (waterskiing, anyone?) consider a deck boat or bowrider. While it’s important to take the appearance and performance of deck boats and bowriders into consideration (they do vary) don’t forget to consider the storage you’ll need and the amount of people who will be typically joining you. Deck boats tend hold more people than a bowrider, so if you have a large family or plan to bring along larger groups, it might be a better option. The front also lifts a little less than a bowrider when accelerating. That being said, bowriders are generally able to take sharp turns a little better, particularly at higher speeds. Make sure you discuss your options with a dealer to find the perfect fit for you.
While no statistics are yet available for 2016, an estimated 43 per cent of adults went boating in 2015. That’s 12.4 million Canadians. Source: National Marine Manufacturers Association

Personal Watercrafts
If you’ve spent any amount of time by Kingston’s waterfront, you’ve likely spotted countless sailboats dotting the horizon.
Imagine a watercraft with walk-in closets, elegantly decorated staterooms and panoramic windows that showcase breathtaking water views. We can all dare to dream, right? While this type of watercraft is financially out of reach for most of us, it’s always fun to imagine what life could be like aboard one of these beauties.
Speedy and sporty, personal watercrafts are affordable for those on a tight budget who still want to have fun on the water. Because of their small size, they are easy to store and tow behind a vehicle, making it easy to regularly explore different lakes and rivers.
Powered by both the wind and an engine, there’s just something breathtakingly beautiful about sailboats — particularly when their sails are raised and catching the wind. New to sailing? Look to Discover Boating for advice. “Many sailors cut their teeth on a small cartop or trailerable boat with a sail or two and a deployable centreboard or daggerboard,” says the association. “The next step is a boat with a fixed keel, which is more stable but more worrisome in shallow waters. Larger sailboats often have at least a small berth or sleeping area below deck.”
According to Discover Boating, these vessels – which offer all the comforts of home like generated electricity, air conditioning and plumbing — typically measure around 40 feet long and are powered by powerful single or twin engines. “These are the boats that make voyages from continent to continent and ply large rivers or the Great Lakes,” says Discover Boating.
If you want to spend the day on the water, there is usually some storage to pack some snacks and a change of clothes, as well as tow eyes that allow for thrilling skiing, tubing and wakeboarding.

marble Inspired by the 1980s; elegant gray veining against the puriest of white, marble is timeless and luxurious. By Katrina Geenevasen-Garlough
Marble touts a long precious history in design. For thousands of years, the beautiful stone has been used to complete some of the most famous structures in the world, such as the Taj Mahal, the Supreme Court building, the leaning tower of Pisa, the Pantheon and Michelangelo’s Statue of David. However, in the 1980s, the material lost some of its classic appeal, becoming synonymous with gaudy, over-the-top style. Throughout the decade, homes were outfitted with marble bathrooms, kitchens and other living spaces, accented with shiny brass or gold fixtures. Fast forward to today and marble is making its way back into homes - thanks to an ‘80s design renaissance - but designers are thinking differently about how to incorporate the look in ways that are

more timeless and less ostentatious. Companies are even giving marble a fashionable, playful twist, creating everything from backpacks to yoga pants to furniture inspired by the stone. “Especially in the kitchen, we’re seeing a huge trend to mix-and-match materials,” says Mark Tomlinson owner of Cataraqui Granite in Kingston, “The marble look beautifully complements warm materials such as wood, metals and brick. Today’s designs are using classic white Carrara-inspired marble with gold or silver veining as a custom accent, rather than the whole-home marble styling of decades past.” If you’re planning an upcoming home renovation, here are five tips for incorporating the marble look.
Make a grand entrance. In the foyer, marble floors make a statement for visitors. Adding marble to the floor is a great option since it is traditionally a smaller space meaning more bang for the buck. Marble also adds visual interest to a home from the moment someone steps through the front door. Add sophistication to the kitchen. The marble aesthetic will continue to be a staple in the kitchen, as there are few countertops that look as luxurious and everlasting. To get the same look as marble with less worry, consider innovative alternatives, which are constantly being introduced to the market.
Look for marble inspired accent pieces such as lamps, boxes and trays A spa-like retreat. The industry is bringing back yet another popular idea from the 1980s: the resurgence of the separation in the bath, with separate showers and oversized bathtubs. Homeowners and designers today are customizing the rooms with thoughtful elements that integrate better with their lifestyles and design preferences.
One of the best aspects of the marble revival is that marble accessories are showing up on store shelves. This allows people to try out the trend before making a permanent decision to incorporate the material. A marble clock in the living space, a marble coffee mug or marble lamps are perfect for those seeking to incorporate the material on a smaller scale.
Consider whole slabs of marble or marbleinspired surfacing to line the shower walls or floors. Use softer colors such as gray, white and cream, which will make the bathroom feel light and clean. Incorporate marble into a home with accessories.
Marble is a great way to infuse luxurious elements in your home as it will add a timeless feature, but it is important to do your research to see where the material is most appropriate to ensure its longevity. It’s important to know when to use authentic marble and when to turn to an alternative option.

The solid, nonporous texture of a quartz countertop reduces the chance of bacteria growth. Quartz is stain-resistant, although spills should be wiped up promptly. In terms of maintenance, it's a great countertop material because it's easy to clean up splatters from spaghetti sauces and doesn't require a sealer. It's also resistant to scratches. Quartz can't take the heat natural stones can. Aesthetically, quartz is made of approximately 93 percent natural quartzite, which offers consistent color and visual movement. Like quartz, granite countertops hold up extremely well to wear and are easy to maintain. The key difference between the two materials is that granite is made up of 100 percent natural stone and tipically requires a sealer. This highly scratch and heat resistant surface is preferred by top chefs. Spills are easily wiped clean from sealed granite and there's little risk of staining if clean promptly. Granite also
provides a stunning visual which gives a high-end look to your kitchen. The durability and easy maintenance also work well for at-home chefs who love to entertain. When you're running behind with meal prep and the doorbell rings, you can quickly clean the surface and it will look fantastic by the time your company makes their way into the kitchen. Quartzite & Dolamites In addition to granite and quartz, natural quartzite is a popular countertop product. It features the same long-lasting characteristics as both granite and quartz, and like granite, natural quartzite is extremely functional, making it the perfect countertop material for a busy kitchen. The colors of quartzite are limited to mostly neutral tan and gray hues, but some other colour options are available. If you're looking for a natural alternative to granite, you may want to consider going with natural quartzite countertops. It’s important to note that all natural stone such as marble and dolamites should be sealed and maintained and can show signs of wear and tear.

GARDEN LIGHT
All winter long, we look forward to the warmer seasons when we can spend time outside in the evening without the chilly bite of the wind on our skin. Lounging in the backyard with a glass of wine and a good book is one of the great luxuries of summer, and it wouldn’t be the same without the romantic glow of outdoor lighting. Outdoor lighting enhances the beauty of your property, allowing you to take advantage of the outdoor space long after the sun has set. From simple fairy lights to more elaborate lighting systems, you can create the ultimate place to relax in the evenings. Without overdoing it, soft lighting on a low wattage can go a long way to light up dark corners and doorways for a safe and comfortable space.
Showing off the architectural beauty of your home with front entrance lighting also offers the added benefit of property security by illuminating anyone approaching your home. Simply adding lanterns on each side of the front door can bestow a welcoming, traditional look while providing necessary light. Floodlights directed at the home can also show off grand features like bay windows, however these lights need to be carefully placed to avoid shining into the home. Moonlighting refers to a style of landscape lighting when fixtures are mounted in trees, evoking the look of natural moonlight. This provides a mixture of up lighting, which creates a sense of drama, and down lighting, which is more safety oriented.

Low voltage landscape lighting is another option that adds curb appeal to your home. Exterior-grade fixtures can be added along walkways, driveways or steps, and can also be used to highlight stone walls, trees or other interesting landscape features you wish to standout. The easiest landscape lighting to use is decorative solarpowered lights, which charge during the day and require no wiring. During outdoor dinner parties you can borrow light from the inside with open doors and windows near your patio table. For a more subdued light, place candles on the table, or light citronella candles near the seating area to keep insects away at dusk. Candles can also be
Grill or serving areas can benefit from brighter lighting, too. To accomplish this, mount lights on a rail behind the grill, or install a recessed spotlight on an adjacent overhang. You can also take advantage of portable lights or lanterns that can be moved wherever you need them to complete outdoor tasks. Affording a relaxed atmosphere and a safe environment, outdoor lighting can enhance and extend the use of your outdoor space at night.

Choosing the Right Builder THE FOUNDATION OF ANY PROJECT
By Tori Stafford
Whether you’re building a new home or looking to renovate your existing one, perhaps the most important decision you’ll make is choosing your builder. From experience and industry involvement to building style and personality, there are a number of things to consider when trying to choose the right home builder for you. Asking questions about experience and any particular specialized features you’re looking for is a great place to start. Additionally, you’ll want to tour a model home a builder has built for other clients – there is really no better way to experience a builder’s work than to see it firsthand.
106
ReFINEdKINGSTON
• The Canadian Home Builders Association suggests some other criteria you’ll want to consider when deciding on a builder: • Has the builder built in the area before? Chances are if the builder has worked in the area, you’re less likely to run into unforeseen issues with bylaws and building codes. • Tour a current worksite. Not only does this give you the opportunity to meet crew members and see them at work, it allows you the chance to experience what their worksites feel like. Pay attention to the cleanliness, safety and overall order of the site. • Ask about warranty programs and services. These are the two things that protect your investment, and
can differ greatly from builder to builder. Ask to have any programs explained in detail, and consider what meets both your long- and short-term needs. Most of all, you’ll want to ensure you can have comfortable, open communication with your builder. Depending on the size and details of your project, you can end up spending a lot of time talking and consulting with your builder. Making sure you’re able to convey your wants and needs easily is key to ensuring a great building experience for all parties. Here, Fine Homes Kingston takes a closer look at some of the builders and companies in the area to give you a head start in making your choice.

The difference, of course, is that a threeseason sunroom gives you the chance to enjoy it during the warmer months of the year (spring through fall if we’re lucky!), while a four-season sunroom offers you the opportunity to comfortably use it all year long. Three-season sunrooms are typically built with single-pane (in other words, not energy efficient) tempered glass. If you wish to use your sunroom throughout the year, energy-efficient, insulated windows must be used throughout the entire room. The walls and roof of four-season sunrooms must also be properly insulated. Remember if you opt for a four-season sunroom, you’ll also need to heat and cool the space – and you can’t rely on your home’s heating and cooling system to do the job. Furnishing Your Space When choosing the furniture for your space, it’s important to keep in mind that because of all the windows, the furniture is going to be exposed to large doses of sunlight. This means you need to choose materials designed to withstand all those rays; you don’t want it to fade over time. Wicker or rattan are both great choices; they’re equal parts durable and stylish. Comfortable cushions with fabrics made to withstand sunlight (look for labels that read UV resistant) make it easy to relax with a cup of coffee before you get your day started, or with a glass of wine after a day at the office.
If you have another type of wood in mind, ensure it can handle the sunlight before making the purchase; you’d hate to see any investment pieces become discoloured or dry out. Wrought iron is another excellent choice – it’ll lend a stylish touch to your space. Just make sure it’s light enough to move around; if you entertain often, you’ll want to shift tables and chairs often to accommodate your guests. Don’t be afraid to mix and match different types of furniture for a more relaxed, eclectic look. Because sunrooms have a more laidback vibe, you can have some fun with the pieces you choose to incorporate. The Accessories A large area rug — make sure it’s faderesistant — will add a pop of colour and a touch of warmth to your sunroom. Choose throw cushions — it’s okay to mix fabrics and patterns — in keeping with your colour scheme, and add a cosy blanket or two to fend off the evening’s chill. Don’t forget to add some side tables, and, if your room has electricity, some lamps so you can enjoy your space long into the evening. Real plants (please, no fake ones!) offer a pretty touch of greenery. Do you plan on entertaining guests often? Consider setting up a mini-bar with an array of drinks and glasses you can easily access without having to leave the room.

Create Your Own Piece of Paradise By Faith Woodland • Photography by Wing Studios
“Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.” Steve Jobs There are people who can take an idea, envision it, and then create it. Kristian Vincent is one of these people. He is the type of person who can look at any space and develop a plan to make it better — more appealing, functional and beautiful — and then make it happen. Kristian is the builder, owner and operator of Paradise Construction. With eight years experience and an innate gift for design, Kristian is becoming a master builder and renovator.

Kristian began learning about construction and its various trades while in high school. He started a carpentry apprenticeship through St. Lawrence College and completed his program at Algonquin College in Ottawa to become a Red Seal licensed carpenter. While working for a custom homebuilder, Kristian became experienced in log construction, ICF and other custom building. When friends relaxed on the weekend, Kristian took on side jobs and worked into the evenings and weekends, investing in his future. He began acquiring the tools necessary for starting his own business in the trade, including vehicles and equipment. Before long, Paradise Construction became a reality and now employs three men with various levels of carpentry training and experience. The company is approaching its five-year anniversary.
For customers who are thinking about updating their décor, a complete renovation project, re-working a difficult space, or preparing to list a house, Paradise Construction can meet their needs. Kristian has completed numerous projects for client Jacqueline Findlay, the largest being a finished basement including a family room, bathroom and laundry room. “Kristian showed diligence and dedication to completing my project on time, while remaining on budget,” says Findlay. “His attention to specifics during construction as well as scheduling resulted in a job well done. I would not hesitate to refer Paradise Construction to others who are in need of quality services from a contractor.”
Based in the Kingston area, customers can call on Paradise Construction for anything from a new deck to a complete kitchen overhaul, bathroom renovations, or basement finishing. While Kristian says, “No job is too small,” the team can also take on large projects. He has done complete home renovations and is now working on large commercial projects as well.

While primarily working on house renovations, Kristian plans to move Paradise Construction towards custom home building in the future. To that end, he has become certified in ICF construction. ICF, or insulated concrete form is a system of formwork for reinforced concrete usually made with a rigid thermal insulation that stays in place as a permanent substrate for exterior walls. This is a technique many custom homebuilders are choosing because it is quicker and less labour intensive than traditional block foundations. He elaborates, “It is a step up from modern day poured foundations having the insulation on both sides. It is immediately ready for siding and drywall, after the concrete is poured.” Kristian hopes to eventually to take more courses in design and architecture as he builds his portfolio

of projects. Fortunately for Kingstonians, Kristian is a professional, ambitious, young man who hopes to serve the community with skills, knowledge, and an aptitude for design. Paradise Construction is a company for clients who want updated style, better functionality and increased home equity. It is a company that customers can rely on to create their own little piece of paradise. Photos of projects can be viewed on Paradise Construction’s Facebook page.
Another renovation project demonstrates how Kristian completely gutted a main floor, removing old flooring, worn carpet, narrow outdated door trim and tired kitchen cupboards. He replaced the flooring with maple hardwood, installed bright white cabinets and granite countertops. He added new wider white trim, updated lighting, and modern fixtures completed the overall look and function. Kristian works with clients to get the look they want within their budget. He can show clients cabinets, which are made of MDF wrapped in thermafoil but less costly than hardwood, with the same look. He has built entirely new fireplace surrounds, or simply re-faced, or painted existing ones. Projects can take anywhere from a week, for a small bathroom reno, to six weeks for a major overhaul. Much of the time frame depends on material availability and custom ordering constraints. Kristian will give a clear outline for what the customer can expect.
ROSEDALE
Kristian has an eye for what looks good and a keen understanding of what is functional. If permits are necessary, as for deck building and/or additions, he will deal with the township and help the client meet requirements. He has electricians and plumbers he can depend on who respect his work and recommend his company in turn. Kristian uses Gananoque Home Hardware as his main supplier for fixtures and cabinets. While he tends to use custom cabinetry, working with big box stores, Paradise does do some millwork on site for unique projects. For one customer, he finished
a basement bar with hockey sticks to enhance the sports theme. In another, he built a bar faced with roofing steel to create a rustic/ industrial look. He can take a customer’s ideas, give suggestions and tweak plans, knowing what works and looks best to make the clients dream come true. Kristian has a good eye for what finishes, tones, textures, and colours go well together. A recent bathroom project has sleek, modern, dark wood cabinetry with light quartz counters. He painstakingly installed a cultured
stone veneer, counter- to-ceiling backsplash. Custom hand-crafted mirrors (built onsite) and elegant light fixtures stand out against the natural, sandy-toned wall. He installed an oval, freestanding bathtub with matching sinks and as a special feature, placed recessed LED lighting in the wood textured tile floor, circling the tub, and creating a dramatic and soothing effect. Adding to the opulence is a hanging chandelier over the bath, modern plumbing fixtures and a glass-enclosed shower. Large new windows complete the setting, creating a spa-like environment for the homeowner.
