The locals know how spoiled they are every summer in the Okanagan Valley. With over 2,000 hours of annual sunshine and surrounded by a myriad of fresh-water lakes, vineyards, and colourful orchards the region thrives from its own abundance.

“We have 18 different wines to chose from,” states Hazel. “And, we are celebrating our 15th anniversary this year.” For visiting Australians searching for a familiar varietal they also produce a stunning Semillon Blanc.

Visitors who flock to the valley during the spring and summer seasons are reaping the benefits of the burgeoning wine and culinary scene that now stretches from one end of the valley to the other. Hazel Manser, co-owner of Larch Hills Winery located in Salmon Arm appreciates the benefits of their location.

“From a visitor perspective we are the first and the last winery for highway travelers from Alberta. And we have built a loyal following from that market as they arrive to enjoy the myriad of water activities on nearby Shuswap Lake.” Home to the largest houseboat fleet in Canada, the Shuswap waterways offers 1000 km (620 miles) of shoreline where locals and visitors alike enjoy the pristine natural setting.

Heading south from the sun-drenched beaches of the Shuswap, the city of Vernon has a bustling wine-tour experience. The first stop is at Planet Bee Honey Farm and Meadery where visitors can experience indepth educational tours on the working life of our busy valley bees. “When the dandelions begin to appear in early May to mid-July is when the bees are the most active”, states president, Ed Nowek. While observing working hives in progress you can enjoy a sampling of Mead or Honey Wine that traces its origins back at least 9,000 years ago. The Meadery recently achieved two medals at the prestigious 2012 Mazer Cup International (MCI) awards for their 2009 Blueberry Bliss and their 2010 Oak and Honey Rapture.

Within the Shuswap area there are now eight wineries where you can sample their unique northern cool climate varietals. At Larch Hills Winery Hazel admits that their Germanic-style Ortega and Siegerrebe are most popular. This hardworking winery produces four–six thousand cases per year.

Water, Wine & Wonder is one of the many tours presented by MJO Tours based in Vernon. Owner/operator, Mary Jo O’Keefe describes it as a “great experience for a group of six or more who are seeking a wine and culinary adventure.” The morning begins early at Paddlewheel Park where guests get

on board for a sightseeing boat ride to Okanagan Centre where they are met by their tour guide who shuttles them to sample at historic Gray Monk Estate Winery complete with a delectable lunch at the onsite Grapevine Restaurant with outstanding views of the north end of Okanagan Lake. This tour also includes sampling at nearby ExNihilo Winery and Arrowleaf Cellars.

The Syrah challenge at the Cobblestone Wine Bar won’t be complete without bringing Desert Hills Winery’s Lieutenant Governor Award winning 2008 Syrah Select to the table. Voted as 2010 Canada’s Best Red Wine of the Year, this vintage evolved from another highly favourable wine-growing bench called Black Sage Bench located in Oliver, B.C. located a 45-minute drive south from Naramata. Noted as the Wine Capital of Canada, the town of Oliver hosts 20 wineries within its perimeters.

Desert Hills Winery is currently undergoing new growth as the founding three brothers from the Toor family renovate their Tasting Room/Wine Shop and introduce new labels for their award-winning vintages including a new line of small lot wines and single vineyard varietals. The Three Brothers Vineyard sits on the estate and is the same vineyard where the award wining Syrah originated. With the popularity of their wines, the brothers have recently introduced a new wine club where membership is free and shipments will take place four times per year from a collection of exclusive library vintages and a selection of new releases.

Where does award-winning wines come from? Ask Mick Luckhurst from Road 13 Vineyards and he will passionately explain to you, “it’s all about the dirt”. Great wines are grown in the vineyard and at Road 13 only a few miles away from Black Hills they are committed to that philosophy. Formerly known as Golden Mile Cellars with its trademark castle architecture the winery has undergone a major expansion and facelift in

appearance to a more contemporary design but the history remains unchanged.

Their wines continue to collect a praiseworthy collection of medals and with their new approach to the wine experience they now offer an ongoing series of tantalizing events from Bubbles for Breakfasts (Sundays) in the Sparkling Wine Cave featuring their Chenin Blanc to their Summer Dinner Series held on the 13th of every month catered by Joy Road Catering. And yes, they too have stellar lake views from both their public and private executive tasting rooms.

The dirt also plays a critical role at Covert Farms Family Estate Winery. Owner Gene Covert is committed to Salmon Safe Certification to transform land management so Pacific salmon can thrive in West Coast watersheds. Through farm stewardship and water practices the Covert Farm offers a bounty of organic fruit and vegetables available for off-farm sales, home delivery and their traditional U-pick program. They are one of only a few organic-based wineries in the Okanagan Valley with a lively tasting room that also offers fresh fruit, preserves, and picnic items for their outdoor picnic area. For future growers, Gene’s wife Shelly has created an Organic Kids Summer Camp for young viticulturists ranging from 7–14 years old.

O

n a recent visit to Vancouver Island to participate in the annual Parksville Uncorked Food & Wine Festival, I seized the opportunity to discover some of the 40+ Island wineries, meaderies and cider houses. One of the fruit wine members of the Wine Island Vintners Association (WIVA) is Coastal Black Winery.

Winemaker and owner, Abel O’Brennan offered to meet with me on a sunny, spring day in the winery. Upon arrival, I was immediately impressed by the largesse of the facility. The winery building with its decorative elements of stone, wood, and wrought iron influences, fit comfortably into the rural setting. A large patio stretches along the front and overlooks a massive outdoor brick pizza oven and a nearby barn-style gathering place that looked perfect to host events. The oversize front door with its black and bold iron filigree stands beneath a matching wooden archway in a wall of stone that is a statement of the craftsmanship that pervades the property.

“Hello,” Abel’s voice carries through the expansive tasting room as I walk in. “You are here to try some wines?” He smiles as he casually pulls a few bottles from below the tasting bar. “We are a fruit winery,” he explains as he lines up his top sellers — blueberry, raspberry, and blackberry table wines. At 11% alcohol, the wines offer intensity in their individual flavours without overpowering your palate.

“How did you come into this business?” I inquire as I continue to sample from the selection Abel has generously poured on my behalf.

“Well,” he laughs. “My wife and I went to high school together and when we got married this was originally a working dairy farm of 800 acres. My in-laws decided to diversify in 2005 and the process began to sell the herd and re-focus our resources. The family has a myriad of talent at the farm. One of my wife’s brothers owned a sawmill and the other was a burgeoning beekeeper. Between all of us, we had several generations of experience to re-brand ourselves as a fruit winery and meadery. This facility,” Abel says gesturing beyond the tasting room, “used to be a massive dairy barn”.

The family got to work. Philip supervised the construction. Daniel cared for the nearly 500 hives of working bees that pollinate the fields of fruit and make the honey for the mead. The remaining job of winemaker fell onto Abel’s broad shoulders.

“So you became a winemaker?” I ask as we walk towards Abel’s truck for a tour of the farm.

“Fruit wines are easier to make,” he admits as we drive in the truck through the busy work area behind the winery. Workers smile and offer friendly waves. They are apparently used to Abel’s role as a tour guide of the facility.

“So, you have a degree?” I press my interrogation.

Abel laughs again. “No, not really. I understand fermentation and I have worked with a consultant. I’ve also taken a few courses and I love what I am doing.”

At the crest of the property, the acres of fruit seem to stretch indefinitely along the gentle sloping coastal terrain. “We have 120 acres of fruit here with the majority, in blackberries [80 acres] and the remainder in blueberries and raspberries [20 acres each].”

with the Mead acquiring the silver. In 2011, at the Finger Lakes International Competition, the Blackberry Dessert Wine took home the gold and the Spiced Mead and the Blackberry Table Wine earned silver, with the Raspberry Dessert Wine winning the bronze.

When we return to the production area, Abel informs me that last year they produced 4,000 cases of wine. “We are targeting to more than double that yield to 9,500 in 2012.”

Of all the wines I sampled during my conversation with Abel, I admit that I enjoyed the Spiced Mead immensely with its hints of cinnamon and ginger. I think it would make a perfect match for a traditional holiday dish of buttery, roasted turkey complete with the aromatic seasonings of old-fashioned stuffing. Of the dessert wines, I can easily imagine them integrated into the final course, served as a drizzle over fruit-filled crepes or sipped as a sweet finish on their own.

“But, can you sell that quantity?” I wonder aloud, simply because fruit wines have not yet earned the popularity of their grape counterparts.

Traditionally known as sweet, sipping wines, they are slowly earning their place at the dinner table and can provide an exciting dimension to food pairings.

“I love the challenge of marketing the fruit wines... we are busy bringing our products to new markets.”

That’s the other part that I really enjoy about this industry.” Abel insists as we return to the tasting room. “I love the challenge of marketing the fruit wines. We welcome all visitors and we are busy bringing our products to new markets.”

As a member of the WIVA, Abel participates in a number of events to promote his wines, ports, and meads. His wines have won a collection of medals that only builds his reputation on the Island. At the Savor Northwest Wine Awards in March 2012, the Blackberry Sparkling and the Blueberry Mead each achieved gold medal ranking

My mind races as I complete my notes. Abel, who has passionately spoke about his craft for the past hour, discreetly checks his watch and explains that his wife Amanda has family dinner prepared. Almost every wall in the facility bears a reproduction of Amanda’s

“Hudson is five, Sullivan is two, and the baby is Declan.”

Don’t miss the pinot gris — this brassy-toned wine offers notes of grapefruit, spice, yellow apple and honey, a nice texture, and fruit that holds to a lovely finish.

Alas, the last stop is at Blackwood Lane, where you’ll try premium, hand-crafted wines in a farmhouse setting. The tasting room is perched

atop a hill, up a curving lane, and offers views of rolling meadowland, woods, barns and fenced farmland. The winery uses noble grapes such as riesling, viognier, chardonnay, merlot, pinot noir, cabernet franc, and also produces a couple of outstanding Bordeaux-style red blends. A gentle process coaxes out complexity and intensity from the grapes, before aging in high-quality new oak barrels.

Today Lillooet is home to Fort Berens Estate Winery. Named after a trading fort on the banks of the Fraser River, Fort Berens is the region’s first winery. In the spring of 2009, proprietors Rolf and Heleen planted 20 acres of vines including Riesling, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Pinot Noir.

The vineyards are rooted on a sage covered bench at the base of the Fraser Canyon’s snow-capped mountains. Spring has sprung and there is lots of activity happening at Tinhorn Creek. Miradoro Restaurant opened up again for the season on March 1st and is open seven days a week for lunch, tapas, and dinner. On weekends they will also be offering brunch.

The Tinhorn Creek Canadian Concert Series kicks off on May 26 and continues until September. The Canadian Concert Series features a Canadian band once a month in the Tinhorn Creek Amphitheatre.

Now in its 12th year the Concert Series is extremely popular with locals and is just starting to be discovered by the tourists. The Concerts are set under the setting sun with the South Okanagan Valley as backdrop.

Concert goers can enjoy a glass a wine, a picnic dinner, and dance the evening away with friends. Spring Wine Festival is just around the corner and there are some great new events hosted by Tinhorn Creek & Miradoro Restaurant including a Blending Seminar and a Winemaker’s Brunch at Miradoro. The Oliver Osoyoos Winery Association is also hosting a brand new event

called the Pig Out and features 24 wineries and local chefs.

There are lots of events going on at the winery, but the Tinhorn Creek cellar and vineyard teams are hard at work as well. In the cellar spring marks the start of bottling of the 2011 whites wines and the 2010 red wines. New releases this spring (May 1) are the 2011 Pinot Gris, 2011 Gewurztraminer, and 2011 Oldfield Series Rose (winery only).

In the vineyard the installation of the new drip irrigation continues and it marks the half way point of the installation. The vineyard will also start planting Pinot Gris in the area in front of the winery.

Tinhorn Creek is open seven days a week from 10am to 6pm and offers a self-guided tour, demonstration vineyard, picnic patio, Golden Mile Hike, and much more!

wine label removal made easy Empty your glass (must be glass) wine bottle and place in a pre-heated oven 300°F (150°C) for 15–30 minutes (maximum) with the wine label facing up on the oven rack. This will soften the glue. Remove the bottle (with oven mitts) and gently insert a blunt knife or blade under the corner of the label to remove it from the bottle. The glue remaining on the back should be sufficient to immediately glue into your journal.

This lively bottle of fermented sparkling wine made in the traditional French champagne method is indeed a celebration in a bottle and perfect for any day and any occasion. Too often we think sparkling wines are only for special occasions. Drink a glass every day and celebrate life! Made from 100% chenin blanc grapes from 40-year old vines, it has lively strings of tiny bubbles rising in the glass and a pale, golden straw colour.

Great toasty brioche, crisp apples and a yeasty nose. The taste is crisp, dry and refreshing with great acidity and balance.

12% alcohol

Pale golden straw colour with the aromas of honey, tinned pineapple, hints of turpene, seasoned hay, and ripe melon.

The wine has great structure and is well balanced. Tannins are soft, but form the backbone of the long finish. Flavours of cedar, spice, tobacco, and chocolate make this a very drinkable wine that will lay down comfortably for a few more years in the cellar. 12% alcohol

Somerset Cider 2006, Cobble Hill, Vancouver Island, BC $20 A selection of ten different cider-apple varieties are grown to produce these exceptional ciders. They include Tremlett’s Bitter, Hauxapfel and Michelin just to name a few. These special cider apple varieties have traditionally been used in England, France and Germany. The Somerset Cider is a dry champagne-style cider from 100% pure apple juice and only the first pressing is used.

It is then aged for a year before release.

The 2006 is a special limited release and subsequently available in very small quantities. The cider is showing complexity from age, but is dry, light and refreshing, with lively bubbles. As it is not filtered it has a cloudy presentation 7.8% alcohol

ENRICO WINERY

Syrah 2008, Vancouver Island, BC $19.50 Although Enrico Winery is located near Mill Bay on southern Vancouver Island, the syrah grapes were grown in the sunny Okanagan Valley. The wine is medium-bodied with a lovely dark garnet colour. The nose shows plums, black berries, aromas of sweet oak, vanilla, mocha and tobacco. The palate is a Christmas pudding with plum sauce and soft textured oak. The wine is drinking easily now but could be laid down for a couple of years. 13.7% alcohol.

The Perfect Match

for the Barbecue By: Chef Steve Marston

I

was recently invited to a friend’s house for an afternoon barbecue.

I jovially asked what I could bring; “oh just some wine”, was the reply.

So this got me thinking what is the best wine to bring to a barbecue.

It’s not as easy as you may first think. The standard libation is a chilled six-pack of beer conveniently picked up en route. However, hopefully, if they are asking you to bring wine their culinary delights will extend beyond the casual backyard fare of hot dogs and hamburgers.

I have done a couple of stints at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, and at Greystone in California. Some of this specific knowledge deals with chemistry — how cooking over direct heat affects the structure of meats and various products cooked in this manner. The subsequent chemical reaction is not so different from making wine. Start with a humble grape then transform it into the popular nectar from the gods. Even if the chef is just the weekend variety it is important to understand the process of flavour transformation.

So, this is a practical example of when the balance between chef and winemaker becomes one.

When selecting wines to accompany a barbecue, think BBQ — big, bold and quaffable. The wines should also be bursting of fruit and spices, hitting your nose with a wonderful punch; a little peppery with good acidity. Look for an alcohol level 13% plus. Please, no wimpy wines here; you will be disappointed if you try a light fruity chardonnay, for example. The food from the grill will bury the flavour of a lighter body wine.

In general, the searing will bring out the natural sweetness of the food. Imagine a bone-in, rib-eye steak simply brushed with olive oil then rubbed with coarse sea salt and cracked black pepper. Once on the grill you will instantly get the sweet aromas of the meat caramelizing — making your mouth water with ravenous anticipation. You will need something robust that satiates your senses.

ACES 2009 Seven Deuce Red is definitely a great match. A big, red, blend of merlot, shiraz, and cabernets from Osoyoos small

lots. It is barrelled in oak for an impressive 16 months. Having shared a couple of glasses of this delectable wine with owner Holger Clausen I know this wine will hold up against richly-seasoned, even smoked barbecue items.

Another winner is D’Angelo’s Tempranillo from the Naramata Bench. Spanish in origin and inspired by the flavourful cuisine served in Tapas bars; it is made in the Burgundy style. Tempranillo is arguably the most famous of Spain’s native grapes. It is a vibrant, aromatic varietal that offers spicy, red fruit aromas, and flavours.

The bottom line is when serving highly seasoned, and richly spiced foods, like grilled chicken or beef, fish and veggies you need to be as bold as their flavours.

Choose a wine that is very fruit forward and full of pizzazz.

One final thing to remember is enjoy your choice of wine with your friends, no matter what ends up in the dishes on the patio table.

We admire your versatility as an actress and the range of characters you portrayed from playing Charlie Sheen’s fiancé in Two and a Half Men to playing a detective in CSI: New York. From a situation comedy one minute to a serious drama the next. Did you and your agents consciously map out this plan?

No, it just all kind of happened that way. Before Two and a Half Men, I hadn’t done comedy but went in for a number of pre-reads. Then later, I received the news I had the role of Charlie Sheen’s love interest, Mia. I was nervous as I hadn’t done a live audience show before but what was supposed to be a two or three episode appearance turned into many more.

It was a great experience as I do enjoy making people laugh.

(We can attest to that, she was hilarious over lunch)

You often film in Vancouver and Toronto. What do you miss most about Canada when you’re away?

There are many things, a friend recently re-introduced me to horseback riding — something I hadn’t done since I was a kid. I miss that very much.

I ride with this trainer who has opened up a whole new world to me. The calibre of horses she has and how much I’ve learned has been incredible.

Now when I go back to L.A., I want to return to Vancouver as quickly as I can because I have not yet found the same level, the same value.

Is there a particular wine you look for in the United States?

I look for a nice, full-bodied wine for dinner; something earthy and old world. I’m not a fan of sweet and fruity. If it’s white, then I go for a light, crisp wine. I also enjoy a rosé wine on occasion and rosé champagne. It’s always on my list of favourites on a nice, summer day.

Are you able to find British Columbia wines in California?

B.C. wines are harder to come by in the United States. I love discovering great wines that haven’t yet caught on.

Have you been to the Okanagan wine region?

Not since I was a child. Everyone keeps telling me I have to check it out.

And I plan to — every Okanagan wine I’ve sampled has been excellent.

In addition to her myriad screen appearances and numerous acknowledgements including being one of the sexiest women on screen, the Vancouver-born actress also devotes herself tirelessly to Best Friends Animal Society.

How are things with Best Friends Animal Society and your annual Fluffball charity event?

The same wonderful couple (Creative Artists Agency’s managing partner David O’Connor) have offered us the use of their beautiful home for the event; it really helps keep costs down. We also have fabulous sponsors like Grey Goose who continue to show their support. The reaction and support gets stronger every year.

A partnership of golf and wine in British Columbia By: Michael Cunningham

any professional golfers are wine afficionados and recognized names such as Luke Donald, Ernie Els, Mike Weir and the LPGA’s Christie Kerr have launched or are in partnership with vineyards throughout the world. Their commitment and the efforts of wine marketing consortiums have led to increased investments by golf facilities in making wine a part of the game. No longer is ale the beverage of choice as golfers now can savour a crisp white, aromatic red or bright rose as they reflect over the days’ accomplishments.

Over the past ten years, a partnership between golf and wineries in British Columbia has developed as golf attempts to grow the game’s participation and showcasing regional wines is a step in the right direction in growing an appreciation of the quality products our province has to offer.

I recently had the pleasure of playing one of the provinces most beautifully crafted golf facilities, the Westin Bear Mountain Golf Resort and Spa on Vancouver Island. It is a half-hour drive from the capital of Victoria and the only resort in Canada with two Nicklaus Design courses.

Following my round, I had the opportunity of meeting the head professional and hotel manager, to discuss their commitment to

providing the “best of the best” in hospitality and lifestyle for the Resort and this mountainside residential community.

“Wine is a key element in maximizing our guest’s experience and many popular and rare vintages of international and British Columbia wines are featured in our restaurants” said hotel manager, Colin Mantell.

Through a private entrance, a rich, dark-wooded wine tasting room, The Cellar, showcases one of the provinces largest collections of wines, valued at over a half million dollars.

Truly impressive, The Cellar is a popular setting for private tasting and wine receptions. An opportunity to participate with a sommelier on Friday Night Flights should not be missed.

Over dinner, at the recently opened Bella Montagna restaurant, the Tuscan inspired Okanagan Valley’s 2008 La Stella Fortissimo, recommended by restaurant manager Adam Walker, was a personal favorite with aromas of cherries and a hint of tobacco and coffee — a perfect accompaniment for many of the delectable Italian presentations on the menu.

Over the past ten years, our province has become one of the continent’s most popular destinations as the diverse terrain that nature created became the perfect terroir in attracting distinguished golf course designers and wine makers to develop and nurture their creations into award winners.

Besides the Island’s Westin Resort, the province is home to many other fine golf escapes, pairing golf with fine dining and wine packages.

In the setting of worldly antiques that grace every room, I discovered Betty Ann’s passion in creating an unforgettable golf experience and escape from day-to-day rigors.

The property is named after her late mother, Rowena. The family purchased it in 1924 and features beautifully appointed rooms as well as four charming cottages on the property, complete with rock fireplaces and soaker tubs. Guests at the cottages are greeted in the morning by a wicker food hamper containing a breakfast fit for royalty.

Betty Ann’s architect husband, Doug, designed the resort’s Rivers Edge restaurant, so golfers and guests could enjoy the scenic river views and experience fine food on the terrace or dining lounge in a sophisticated west coast atmosphere. The selection of wines shows their commitment to the promotion of smaller B.C. wineries while maintaining their dedication to the province’s most popular varietals.

North America’s first Aboriginal owned and operated winery, Nk’Mip Cellars. The winery site is one of the most attractive in the South Okanagan with outstanding views in a setting of natural beauty. The vineyards and orchards provide a stunning contrast for the nine hole desert course, Sonora Dunes Golf Club — a good test of one’s game and one of four premium courses in the area. A glass of 2008 Syrah from the wineries premium label Q*AM Q*MT [kw-em kw-empt], translated as “achieving excellence”, was a taste sensation with its richness and peppery notes. Sitting on my balcony at Spirit Ridge Vineyard Resort and Spa, (4.5 star) and overlooking the surrounding lush vineyards and waters of Lake Osoyoos on a warm day, I surmised that this is how life was meant to be enjoyed.

The Resorts’ Spirit Ridge Restaurant is now under the ownership of the well-known restaurateur Dave Keeler, whose knowledge and focus on exceptional service are key factors in all of his successful ventures including the exceedingly pleasing Sonora Room Restaurant at Burrowing Owl’s Estate Winery in Oliver. “We enjoy the opportunity of sharing with our guests many of the fine vintages that are available from our winery neighbors” said operations manager, Mike Campol. “It is our desire to provide a wide variety of locally produced wines that represent the diversified grapes that grow in the Okanagan Valley”.

Just south of Vernon, off Highway 97, is the impressive Predator Ridge Resort, one of the finest golf resorts in North America that features 36 holes of premium golf. The original Les Furber design and the 2010 Best New Canadian Golf Course, designed

by Doug Carrick, are set in a semi-arid mountainous landscape that truly captures one’s obsession as to why we play the game.
