DAIKIN APPLIED Enhances Relationship with D&B Engineering

On its journey to become the leading applied HVAC company, Daikin Applied has enhanced its relationship with D&B Engineering to strengthen sales and service capabilities in the region. To reflect their continued growth, D&B Engineering will change their name to D&B Building Solutions LLC. D&B is Daikin’s existing manufacturer sales representative in central and northern New Jersey. Beginning today, Daikin Applied has combined its factory service business with D&B’s existing service team, making D&B Service Group LLC Daikin’s authorized factory service provider for applied and VRV systems throughout their New Jersey sales territory, as well as the borough of Staten Island in Richmond County, New York.

D&B brings nearly 50 years of HVAC sales, service and parts expertise to customers in the region. “We began representing Daikin in 1971, and have successfully grown by putting customers at the core of the business,” said Co-Principal Dan Daniello. “Extending an already strong service team with factory experts will allow us be more competitive and responsive to our customers.”

Providing one face to the customer for both equipment and service streamlines the customer ownership experience. D&B Partner Jeff Barat expanded: “Knowledgeable technicians are critical to ensure customers are confident and satisfied at installation and throughout the system lifecycle. Our track record and Daikin’s additional commitment to D&B prove that we’ve got what it takes to lead in our region.”

Daikin Applied’s EVP of Sales, Marketing and Aftermarket, Kirk Thorne, believes this change continues to fuel Daikin’s competitive advantage in the region. “We value our independent representatives’ customer focus and entrepreneurial culture,” Thorne stated. “Our Reps are the best in the industry, and combining service teams is not only a win for Daikin and D&B, it is a win for our customers.”

Thorne also emphasized that Daikin’s strategies are focused on the region. “This enhanced relationship is well suited to the conditions and capabilities of both D&B and our service operations. Every region is different and Daikin will continually evaluate each of its regions individually to ensure we have the best structure to serve customers. Our end goal is to create the best outcomes for our customers, by aligning with top talent to build the strongest organization in the industry.”

HONEYWELL Launches Innovative Cooling Technology For Electronics, Data Centers

Honeywell (NYSE: HON) announced the launch of a breakthrough platform of liquid heat transfer agents that cool highperformance electronics more efficiently and effectively than traditional methods that use air and water. These new heat transfer agents lower operational costs for applications such as data centers that use high-performance servers.

Solstice E-Cooling, the newest addition to Honeywell’s revolutionary line of next-generation low-global-warming potential refrigerant technologies, uses a two-phase liquid cooling process to remove heat from electronic applications while reducing environmental impact. The new technology is available now and being previewed at the Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Expo (AHR) in Orlando, Fla.

“Honeywell works to develop solutions that help the world prepare for the future, and with the global demand for more data and processing, there is an overwhelming need for efficient and effective cooling mechanisms,” said Chris LaPietra, vice president and general manager, Honeywell Stationary Refrigerants. “With Solstice E-Cooling, data centers and other high-performance electronics can increase efficiency while lowering costs and their carbon footprint.” Data centers currently use about 3% of the world’s electricity, and that number is expected to rise to 8% by 2030, according to research by Global Markets Insights (GMI). With cooling systems accounting for approximately 40% of total energy consumption, the need for intelligent and energy-efficient solutions is expected to drive data center cooling market growth.

The two-phase Solstice E-Cooling process allows for more energy-efficient and uniform cooling, better heat rejection, and reduced pumping power than single-phase liquid cooling, where fluid remains in its liquid form throughout the cooling process. Solstice E-Cooling is also a dielectric solution, serving as an electrical insulator for equipment to prevent damage from contact with fluids.

Honeywell has a long history of innovation in developing leading heat transfer agents, including R-410A, Solstice yf, Solstice ze, and Solstice zd. With an ultra-low GWP and zero ozone depletion potential, Solstice E-Cooling allows for improved cooling capabilities while minimizing environmental impact. Along with its extensive heat transfer agent portfolio, Honeywell has commercialized applications to prove the viability of two-phase liquid cooling and to test products like Solstice E-Cooling for global adoption.

Honeywell is a world leader in the development, manufacturing and supply of refrigerants sold worldwide under the Solstice and Genetron® brands for a wide range of applications, including refrigeration and building and automobile air conditioning. Honeywell and its suppliers have completed a $900 million investment program in R&D and new capacity based on Honeywell’s hydrofluoro-olefin (HFO) technology.

TRANE Local Eighth Graders Experience Engineering Firsthand at Trane ®

Trane®, a leading global provider of indoor comfort solutions and services, collaborated with ASHRAE® (the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers) and the Coulee Subsection of IEEE (the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) to encourage La Crosse, Wis., students to consider careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Nearly 250 eighth grade students from 11 local middle schools visited Trane’s La Crosse facility this week, taking part in a competitive activity in which they designed a LEGO® vehicle and provided detailed instructions to human “robots” to recreate it. Volunteers from Dairyland Power Cooperative, Michaels Energy and HSR Associates acted as the human robots, and provided supplies and planning support for the event.

Students also toured the Trane laboratory and acoustics facility, learning about various career opportunities within the STEM fields, and experienced firsthand the engineering and programming opportunities in the heating, ventilating and air-conditioning (HVAC) industry.

“This was a perfect opportunity to share the exciting world of engineering and other STEM fields with young students when they’re old enough to be considering careers, but still young enough to be making choices for their high school coursework,” said Kristin Sullivan, compressor design team leader for Trane. “These students may become the scientists and engineers who solve the climate and sustainability challenges of our future, and it was a great experience to see how enthusiastic these students were to learn more and get involved.”

“I liked learning how taking just one piece out of a sound can make a big difference to how people perceive the sound,” said Brynn Burr, Mount Calvary-Grace Lutheran School student.

Nearly 27 percent of workers in the manufacturing sector will retire over the next decade, leaving up to 3.5 million engineering and manufacturing jobs that will need to be filled in the U.S. In 2018, the number of teenage boys interested in STEM careers dropped from 36 percent to 24 percent while the number of teenage girls with the same interest remained at only 11 percent.

Through participation in events like National Engineers Week, Trane is tackling the urgent need to attract the next generation of skilled workers to technology-focused education and careers, including building interest in and exposure to the wonders of STEM at an early age. Additionally, the company is focusing on increasing opportunity for all while meeting the challenge of climate change through bold 2030 Sustainability Commitments.

CARRIER Rolls Out More Powerful Supra® Truck Refrigeration Units

Three new models have been added to Carrier Transicold’s next-generation Supra® series of dieselpowered truck refrigeration units, providing more powerful cooling choices for small to large box trucks. Carrier Transicold is a part of Carrier, a leading global provider of innovative HVAC, refrigeration, fire, security and building automation technologies.

“These next-generation Supra units deliver improved capacities more efficiently, while using less fuel and refrigerant,” said Scott Parker, product manager, truck products, Carrier Transicold. “The new design reduces sound output by as much as 3 decibels relative to earlier models, making the new Supra series especially well-suited for nighttime urban deliveries. It also trims weight, resulting in units that weigh 5-9% less than comparable competitive units.”

Joining the Supra S6 model, which was introduced in 2019, are the S7, S8 and S9 models, providing solutions for trucks ranging from 10 to 28 feet in length. Using about 50% less refrigerant, all four models provide greater cooling capacity* than prior models – up to 20% more, depending on model and operating conditions.

“Improved efficiency means fuel economy is significantly improved,” Parker said. “For example, a Supra S7 unit consumes about 37% less fuel than its predecessor. When parked and operating on electric standby power, models in the new Supra series deliver refrigeration capacities* that approach or are equal to their capacities when engine-driven, surpassing some competitive products, which can lose up to a quarter of their capacity when running on electric standby.”

The platform’s new architecture streamlines the refrigeration system into a configuration using 42% fewer unique components than earlier models. To reduce service requirements, the series includes design enhancements, such as the use of maintenance-free fans and upgrades that enabled the oil-service interval to be extended by 33% to 2,000 hours, among other improvements.

A wrap-around honeycomb grille provides a more contemporary appearance and is removable for easy access to internal components.

The Supra series now features Carrier Transicold’s sophisticated APX™ control technology, providing intelligent performance optimization, automatic trip data recording and enhanced system diagnostics. Drivers can conveniently tap into the APX system’s functionality through the dash-mounted Cab Command™ control interface.

The new Supra series seamlessly integrates with Carrier Transicold’s eSolutions™ telematics offering, enabling remote monitoring and control of the refrigeration system, GPS location data, geofencing and many more capabilities.

FUJITSU GENERAL To Start Air Conditioning Business with a Direct Sales Structure in India

Fujitsu General will start air conditioner business with a direct sales structure through our Indian sales subsidiary of Fujitsu General (India) Private Limited (hereinafter “FG (India)”) in India from January 21. We will look to further improve our brand by strengthening marketing activities and after-sales services under our initiative in the future. At the same time, we will aim to expand our air conditioner business in India by increasing our sales channels with opening stores under our direct operation and the development of new distributors including commercial segments.

The air conditioner market in India is growing rapidly at an annual rate of 10% or more and it is expected to continue in the future. Fujitsu General considers India as one of the top priority markets in our mid-term management plan for which FY2022 will serve as the fiscal year of achievement. Together with this, we conducted a feasible study toward a review of our sales structure with our joint venture and local sales agent of ETA General Private Limited. However, we have now agreed to switch to a direct sales structure with FG (India) in the Indian market.

We will work to further improve our strong brand power in India by strengthening sales promotions, advertising and publicity, and aftersales services under our leadership. Furthermore, we will revise our sales channels fundamentally by launching retail stores with our direct operation, adding to developing new dealers and distributors. We will also look to strengthen our sales structure for commercial use air conditioners (e.g., packaged air conditioners for buildings). Adding to it, we will aim to expand our air conditioning solutions business by making proactive proposals to the customers of ABS Aircon Engineers Private Limited, a company which we turned into a consolidated subsidiary in December 2018, which designs, executes projects and provides service maintenance for air conditioning systems, for replacing demand of commercial use air conditioners.

Moreover, we will introduce new models in inverter air conditioners line-up, that meet local needs, in February. As energy-saving regulations have become even stricter in India since January of this year we expect the expansion of the demand of inverter air conditioners which is our strong point. New products are the models for the great demand segment, which we have not offered in our line-up so far. The new models have specifications such as withstanding unstable voltage conditions and severe outside temperature environments – in addition to the high energy saving performance. We expect to increase our sales in the inverter air conditioners market with the new models. We will hold a dealer convention in Mahabalipuram, south of Chennai at 7 p.m. (local time) on January 21st. Etsuro Saito, President & Representative Director of Fujitsu General, will address about the future prospects that will come from this direct sales structure at this convention.” www.fujitsu-general.com

UNIDO To provide emergency assistance to China to help contain the outbreak of coronavirus

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) will provide emergency response assistance to China to help fight the outbreak of the novel coronavirus (Covid-19). A related project document was signed today by Ambassador WANG Qun, Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations in Vienna, and LI Yong, Director General of UNIDO.

UNIDO will quickly deliver 100,000 medical masks and 20,000 protective suits to China. It will also provide medical waste decontamination equipment, with capacity to deal with four tonnes of medical waste per day, for a newly established hospital. Videos and other remote training materials will educate staff in hospitals and disposal centres in both cities and in rural areas on the safe management of medical waste. Wang noted that Director General Li also wrote to President Xi Jinping last week, in which he expressed UNIDO’s readiness to provide full support to the Chinese government in addressing the epidemic. “There is an old

www.unido.org saying in China that, misfortune tests the sincerity of friends. UNIDO’s precious support for China’s counter epidemic efforts is a classic case in point, which reflects the robust cooperative relationship between China and UNIDO. We thank UNIDO for its strong support.” “The outbreak of Covid-19 brings new challenges to China, as the confirmed and suspected cases are still increasing,” said UNIDO’s Li. “New infections need to be minimized, including among medical staff who are the backbone of the fight against Covid-19. For this, protective equipment for medical staff is needed; but also ways to manage safely the hazards posed by medical waste. This is where UNIDO will make a difference with the support agreed today.”

“Currently, China’s anti-epidemic fight has entered the most critical stage. UNIDO’s donation is most timely, and will help China in its combat against the epidemic. We will strictly follow the relevant procedures and make sure the supplies be delivered back to China’s health facilities and people with priority needs. It is

our conviction that, with the strong leadership of the Communist Party of China, with the advantages of the Chinese socialism system, with all the Chinese people united as one, with the solid scientific, technological and material foundation accumulated since the founding of the People’s Republic of China 70 years ago, especially since the reform and opening up 40 years ago, with the past experiences in responding to public health emergencies, and with the vigorous support of the international community, including UNIDO, China has full confidence and capability to win the battle against the epidemic eventually.” said Wang.

Since 2008, UNIDO has assisted China in managing medical waste in a safe, environmentally sound manner. “Our transformative activities, implemented in cooperation with the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, have systematically enhanced capacity on medical waste in more than 170 disposal centres and over 1,500 hospitals across the whole country,” said the UNIDO Director General.”

KNAUF INSULATION Three Ways To Make The Eu Green Deal A Truly Transformative Agenda For Europe In 2020

Knauf Insulation welcomed the EU Green Deal with its ambition of launching a transformational ‘wave’ of renovation across the EU as part of an historic roadmap to make Europe the world’s first climate-neutral continent by 2050.

Here are our key recommendations on how the EU can deliver its objective to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions while cutting energy bills at the same time.

1. Boost the renovation of the existing building stock: There is no safe climate future without the decarbonisation of existing buildings. This will require more efforts to boost the energy efficient renovation of the building stock.

2. Deliver real energy savings: The EU Green Deal aims at organising “renovation efforts into larger blocks to benefit from better financing conditions and economies of scale”. How this can be achieved in practice?

3. Increase the share of urban green infrastructure: The EU Green Deal announced a new strategy to increase urban biodiversity and called for a zero pollution action plan for air, water and soil to be adopted in 2021 with provisions to achieve cleaner air in Europe. www.knaufinsulation.com

DANFOSS Wants more Female Leaders

Over the next five years, Danfoss will have 50 percent more females in leadership positions. Today, women count for well over a third of all the company’s employees, but only 20 percent of its leaders are women. Therefore, Danfoss has launched new ambitious plans to ensure that 25% of its leaders are women in 2022 and 30% in 2025. Danfoss is now embarking on an ambitious plan to ensure that the number of female leaders increases significantly over the next five years. With a number of new initiatives, the goal is to grow the proportion of female leaders from 20 percent today to 30 percent in five years.

Today, 30 percent of Danfoss employees are women, but only 20 percent of leadership positions are occupied by women. Therefore, it is now becoming a focus area for the entire Danfoss global organization to ensure that the number of female leaders is increased by 50 percent.

With the headline - diversity and inclusion, Danfoss is now launching a large number of significant and concrete efforts. It is about telling even more about Danfoss as a workplace and about the many opportunities you have as an employee. There will be a stronger focus on the recruitment process, on retaining talented women, and on developing and empowering female employees to become tomorrow’s successful leaders.

This means, among other things, that several female candidates should already be closely associated with Danfoss during their studies, through internships, student jobs, mentoring schemes and Danfoss networks. We must ensure a 50/50 distribution in Danfoss’ postgraduate and talent programs. Female employees who are affiliated with the Danfoss talent program will receive a senior manager as a mentor to help them in their development, and all females will be offered career coaching as part of their development plans. And not least, all Danfoss leaders will be trained to practice inclusive leadership and aim to reach at least 30% women in their leadership team by 2025. www.danfoss.com

“The powerful 5G mobile communications technology lets us exploit the potential and advantages of digitising our manufacturing processes even more. We want to take this to the next level in order to increase the flexibility and efficiency of our manufacturing process“, says Carsten Röttchen, Managing Director International Production at Rittal.

With the new 5G mobile communications standard, data can be processed at a rate of 10 gigabits per second. That is 100 times faster than with the present LTE standard. 5G is regarded as the technology of the future, which will mean that industrial manufacturing processes can be networked and controlled even better, while the potential of Industry 4.0 can be fully exploited. “We expect that the high bandwidths, low latency times, real-time capability, improved availability and high levels of reliability will ensure further streamlining of the manufacturing processes in our plant, because we will be able to integrate 5G technology into manufacturing-critical and control-relevant tasks following the first test runs”, Mr. Röttchen explains. Rittal wants to install and commission the 5G mobile communications network in Haiger as quickly as possible in a real manufacturing environment.

EDGE CLOUD DATA CENTRE IN OPERATION

In the future, it will be possible to collect data that is generated and which is needed at sensors, components, machinery or robots faster than ever before in an edge or cloud data centre, and to then have it analysed and evaluated by means of artificial intelligence (AI). The necessary IT requirements have already been met at the new Haiger plant. For example, ONCITE is in operation. This is a highly available, AI (artificial intelligence)-based edge-cloud data centre for the rapid processing and analysis of industrial data in real time. This unique solution, which recently won the “Innovation Champions Award”, has now been launched on the market. “We will offer 5G technology to other customers as an ONCITE product component as soon as the tests in Haiger have been successfully completed,” says Dr. Ritz, Managing Director of German Edge Cloud, a member of the Friedhelm Loh Group. “We are ready for the off. We can take the next steps as soon as the manufacturers of 5G technology make the appropriate devices available. We expect that the installation of the technology for the first test runs will be completed by the end of 2020,“ Andreas Huck, Rittal’s Managing Director for Controlling, Accounting, HR and IT explains.

HIGHLY AUTOMATED MANUFACTURING OPERATIONS IN HAIGER

At the new Rittal plant in Haiger, over 100 high-tech machines and system components operate to manufacture approx. 9,000 AX and KX compact and small enclosures per day on 24,000 square metres of floor space. The plant is highly automated and processes around 35,000 metric tons of steel per year.

Today, higher-level control systems are already combining machines and handling systems to form a communication network to Industry 4.0 standards. Twenty driverless transport systems are in operation at the plant. Packaging, labelling and onward transport to distribution are also automated. With the help of knowledge-based systems that can be continuously taught, it will be possible to cut downtimes in the future while maintenance can be planned and interruptions to the sophisticated production process reduced.

Digitised order fulfilment will ensure the availability in the Global Distribution Center of the standard portfolio including accessories. From customer to customer – end-to-end data, configuration and engineering at the customer’s site, up to and including delivery and service.

Slated for completion soon, the 280m-long Skybridge is an elevated scenic walkway that will link Perth’s Airport to a new train station being constructed, enhancing the efficiency of public transport to and from the airport. Several iwalks by thyssenkrupp Elevator will be installed, together with another three elevators that have the capacity to each transport up to 66 passengers.

Commencing installation in August 2019, two of the four iwalks will extend 92m after completion – the longest iwalks that thyssenkrupp has ever manufactured. The remaining two are 38m in length. The iwalks will have the capacity to transport 7,300 passengers per hour, to support the anticipated 20,000 trips a day that the Forrestfield-Airport link is expected to carry when fully running by 2021, according to the Public Transport Authority of Western Australia. “thyssenkrupp Elevator was selected as a result of a long and strong relationship between the airport’s builders and the company. Right from the start and due to the iwalks’ shallow pit for the hovering slimline bridge, we identified the iwalks as an appropriate solution to providing an aesthetic benefit to the customer”, says Peter Walker, CEO thyssenkrupp Elevator. He adds: “Innovations move our business forward, especially in the digital era and space. However, our company as well as our customers only gain value from innovations when they help us to be more efficient and provide faster and better services. With Australia’s first iwalks by thyssenkrupp, we turn innovations into profitable growth.” Perth Airport is the largest airport in Western Australia. In 2016, after recent expansions and projects, it was awarded Capital City airport of the year by the Australian Airports Association. In 2018, it was named best airport in Australia for overall service quality by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.

Just in time for the Christmas travel season, thyssenkrupp technicians put into operation two iwalks at Melbourne Airport, Terminal 4. Two more are scheduled for installation in March 2020. Here, the biggest structural challenge was to install new moving walks within the existing structure and without creating a new pit. With the support of thyssenkrupp Elevator Australia, a feasibility study was done by a group of experts including structural engineers and architects. It was confirmed that thyssenkrupp iwalks were the most suitable product for this project.

Given the extremely tight timeline, two of the Melbourne iwalks were flown from Spain in to Australia and delivered in less than 20 weeks from the date the order was received.

thyssenkrupp’s iwalk, the next-generation moving walk, perfectly fits the airports’ ambitious expansions and upgrades. The spectacular Skybridge at Perth Airport ensures maximum passenger comfort and efficiency when moving from plane to train, or vice versa. Airports are an elementary component of urban mobility – especially when linked to a railway that takes the travellers directly to the city and therewith is an attractive alternative to going by car.

One of thyssenkrupp’s key objective is to improve every airport’s efficiency and every traveller’s experience. The company is proud to be making airports smarter around the world by seamlessly moving 1.8 billion people through its passenger boarding bridges every year having installed more than 5,000 global gate solutions at over 370 airports worldwide and operating and maintaining over 1000 passenger boarding bridges worldwide.

iwalks are a cutting-edge solution to the challenge of transporting people, trolleys, and the like. With 30 percent less weight compared to conventional solutions, they revolutionise the way that walks are developed, manufactured and installed. The iwalk’s modular, compact design is tailored to fit the evolving requirements of space, with reduced weight and outer dimensions to produce thinner floors, requiring less building space, whilst offering enhanced convenience and comfort of passengers due to a wider pallet. GREEN LINK Responding to Customer Needs Green Link Strengthens its Knucklehead Base Attachment

Green Link Engineering has increased support strength by 40 percent on its Knuckehead universal base in response to customer needs in areas with high winds, seismic activity and other environmental fluctuates that can effect rooftop installations.

“Swings in weather patterns — high winds, and seismic events around the country, most recently in California, Puerto Rico and the Midwest — suggest the need for stronger, more stable installations of rooftop equipment. Responding to customer needs, we made a simple retool of our universal Knucklehead base without changing its basic design so that it now offers our customers the option to add more fasters to the base during installations,” said Dan Olinger, Green Link President. “When we heard from HVAC and roofing contractors about issues relating to equipment shifting during environmental events, we immediately looked at effective ways to retool our product to offer additional strength options. GreenLink prides itself on responding to customer needs and offering versatility in the use of our products. “

Greenlink Engineering’s retooled KnuckleHead universal base now offers an improved attachment feature for more secure installations. The universal base, which accepts a range of head designs, originally featured two holes for securing the base using screws that penetrate to the roof deck. The retooling now features four holes which allows for the doubling of mechanical fasteners. In laboratory tests, the four-fastener base installation increased support strength by 40% tested on a 12” strut Knucklehead configuration. No change has been made to the basic design of the base. The holes are still positioned in the center, and the base can also be further secured and sealed using specially formulated Green Link Adhesive/Sealant.

A range of head designs can be fastened to the universal base for supporting struts, large pipes, small pipes, solar panels and pavers. KnuckleHeads offer a unique feature in that they can be attached or loose laid, depending on local conditions and specifications.

USGBC Youth Sustainability Leaders from Across the U.S. to Close Out the 2020 Green Schools C & E

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) announced that a panel of youth sustainability leaders will provide an engaging luncheon discussion to close out the annual Green Schools Conference & Expo (GSCE). GSCE is celebrating its 10th year, and is the only national event to bring together people who lead, operate, build and teach in U.S. schools. The conference is taking place from March 2-4, 2020, at the Hilton Portland Downtown in Portland, Oregon, and registration is currently open.

“The youth climate movement has inspired leadership from today’s youth across the globe, from organized marches, to communication campaigns, to school climate strikes. These actions are energizing and changing the mindset of students and adults alike,” said Anisa Heming, director of the Center for Green Schools at USGBC. “We hope through the voices of their peers, students will be encouraged and feel empowered to lead local and global sustainability.”

Moderated by Portland, Oregon, high school teacher Tim Swinehart, the panel will feature Lily Gardner, a high school junior from Kentucky and a director for Sunrise Movement, and Rayan Krishnan, an undergraduate student at Stanford University and creator of the educational video game Operation Sustain. The discussion will focus on leadership, environmental activism and entrepreneurship in an age where an increasing number of young people are taking a stand for the future of the climate.

Gardner serves as the state policy director for Kentucky Youth Climate Strike, is a hub coordinator of Sunrise Lexington and sits on the Bluegrass Youth Sustainability Council, in addition to her work with Sunrise Movement. Recently, Gardner planned the Climate Strike in Louisville, Kentucky, drawing a large crowd of passionate youth and adults alike. Since then, she has trained high school students from across the country in community organizing for the climate change movement, and served on the Youth Climate Coalition, the coordinating body tasked with planning upcoming Earth Day events. Krishnan, originally from Sammamish, Washington, grew up with an appreciation for the natural environment. After the U.S. government’s announcement to exit the Paris Accord, Kirshnan worked with his high school’s administration to meet the carbon emissions reduction goals of the Accord for his school. He formed the organization Schools Under 2 degrees C to challenge other schools to also focus on reducing their carbon emissions. In addition, he created the interactive game, Operation Sustain, as a way to help young students learn about climate issues, sustainability and how they can make an impact.

The panel’s moderator, Tim Swinehart, teaches Environmental Justice and International Baccalaureate (IB) Geography at Lincoln High School in Portland, Oregon, and is the recipient of the 2015 Oregon Outstanding Social Studies Teacher of the Year award. In 2016, he helped create Portland Public Schools’ firstin-the-nation climate justice education policy and has served on the school district’s Climate Justice Committee for the last three years. Swinehart is a proponent for climate justice education that empowers students to act as leaders for social and environmental justice, and his work as an environmental justice educator has been featured in The New York Times, YES! Magazine and NEA Today.

The conference will open with TV personality and science communicator Danni Washington on March 2. Washington’s work focuses on engaging young students to further their understanding of nature and empowering the next generation of scientists, communicators and conservationists. www.usgbc.org
