Lasting solutions for refugees
RefugePoint envisions an inclusive world where all refugees can safely build stable, connected, and thriving lives.
In recent years, the world has witnessed the highest level of forced displacement on record. Millions of refugees have fled their homes seeking safety from conflict, persecution, and human rights violations.
Humanitarian organizations are often quick to provide aid, but most offer only short-term assistance rather than lasting solutions. This leaves refugees stuck in limbo with few opportunities to find long-term safety and rebuild their lives.
RefugePoint seeks to expand access to lasting solutions for refugees, especially those facing vulnerabilities who are underserved by aid systems.
We expand access to long-term solutions for refugees through self-reliance, resettlement, and other pathways to safety.
For refugees who can safely remain in the country to which they have fled, we help them reach stability and work towards self-reliance, so they can meet their own needs.
Through our Urban Refugee Protection Program (URPP) in Nairobi, Kenya, we identify refugee households facing extreme vulnerabilities and help to stabilize them. Once their basic needs are met, we provide support to help them earn an income. The URPP also serves as a learning hub for the larger refugee-response field. We develop innovative programs, demonstrate that they work, and scale them to drive large-scale change.
The URPP reaches about 10,000 refugees annually, working intensively with a core caseload of about 1,500 people.
Through the Refugee Self-Reliance Initiative (RSRI), hosted by RefugePoint, we help promote opportunities for refugees to become self-reliant and achieve a better quality of life. The RSRI is a global network that uses self-reliance programming to innovate global refugee response through the expansion of data and evidence, improvement in standards of practice for self-reliance programming, and creation of conducive policy environments.
RSRI partner organizations have reached more than 2 million refugees globally, as of the end of 2023.
Many refugees can’t go home or remain safely in the country to which they’ve fled. We help these people relocate to a safe, new country through resettlement or other pathways, so they can begin to rebuild their lives.
We refer refugees for resettlement directly through our program in Nairobi, as well as through our partnership with the UNHCR, through which we deploy staff to support resettlement operations in UNHCR offices globally. At any given time, we have around 50 Resettlement Experts helping refugees in 35+ countries.
We also help refugees to relocate through other pathways to safety, including labor mobility and family reunification.
Through our resettlement programs, we help about 12,000 refugees to access resettlement and other pathways to safety each year.
Labor mobility
RefugePoint’s Labor Mobility program, one of the first of its kind in the world, helps connect refugees to job opportunities. Many refugees have the skills and experience to apply for jobs that would allow them to relocate to new countries and rebuild their lives but face barriers to access. This program helps qualified refugees overcome policy and logistical hurdles to access these opportunities.
Family unity, a fundamental human right, should be accessible to refugees no matter where they come from or where their families are located. We work to expand solutions to reunite refugee families and make family reunification more accessible to refugees worldwide.
At any given time, we have about 50 Resettlement Experts helping refugees in more than 35 countries.
RefugePoint is deeply committed to creating space for and elevating refugees’ voices and leadership within the organization and the broader humanitarian community. We partner with refugees to achieve their aims and are committed to ensuring that refugees are an integral part of our program design, implementation, and monitoring, as well as our overall agency governance.
We work simultaneously on direct services, field building, and systems change to drive largescale change.
We help refugees access lasting solutions using three tactics:
Each year, we provide direct assistance to thousands of refugees who face vulnerabilities and are underserved by humanitarian aid systems.
Using what we learn from our direct service work, we help build sector-wide capacity by sharing knowledge and resources to expand solutions for refugees.
Through our strategic relationships with key decision-makers in the sector (within governments, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees [UNHCR] and other organizations), and our seat at the table in high-level policy settings, we influence global policy and practice to transform refugee response systems.
As of the end of 2023, we’ve directly referred 141,997 refugees for resettlement or other pathways to a safe country. We’ve also equipped thousands of refugees with the tools to support themselves and their families in the country to which they’ve fled. Through innovation, collaboration, and influence, we’ve helped lead the sector in expanding long-lasting, refugee-centered solutions and instigated major changes in global practice.

Samira and Omer, a mother and son, were violently separated while fleeing civil war in Sudan in 2016. For years, Samira was unsure whether Omer had survived. After resettling to Canada, Samira discovered Omer was still alive when a friend recognized him in a Facebook photo. Samira quickly applied for family reunification so Omer could join her in Canada. A RefugePoint Family Reunification Expert met with Omer in Chad and helped him with the steps needed to reunite with his mother. After seven years apart and countless video calls, Samira and Omer were reunited in Vancouver in May of 2023.
