The Years Between %BQIOF EV .BVSJFS QMBZ PQFOT 3PZBM %FSOHBUFoT .BEF JO /PSUIBNQUPO TFBTPO FRI 4 TO SAT 6 FEB Royal & Derngate opens its 2011 Made in Northampton season with a play by the well-loved novelist Daphne du Maurier. The Years Between takes to the Royal stage from Friday 4 to Saturday 26 February, and is the first of a whole season of works written or inspired by classic British writers. Set in the 1940s it follows the fortunes of MP’s wife Diana Wentworth, and her young son, after her husband is lost in action in World War II. As a single woman, Diana finds unexpected independence; she assumes her husband’s
seat in parliament and begins a relationship with a local farmer. As the war draws to an end and peace returns to the country, a shock revelation threatens Diana’s new existence to the core. Autobiographicallyinspired, The Years Between is one of only two original plays written by Daphne du Maurier, better known as a novelist and particularly as the author of Rebecca and Jamaica Inn. An intriguing family drama, this powerful production directed by Kate Saxon (ETT’s Far From The Madding Crowd) breathes new life into this rarely-performed gem.”
THE YEARS BETWEEN is at the Royal and Derngate, Guildhall Road, Northampton, NN1 1DP. For tickets call the box office on 01604 624811 or go online at www.royalandderngate.co.uk

Man’s inhumanity to man never ceases to stun each gen-
eration. 7734 questions the human forces and weaknesses that have manufactured hell on earth whilst illuminating both our capacity for survival and the poetry of hope. Dramatically epic in scale and content, 7734 features stunning designs - a vast watch tower, flying bombs, a wind stormed beach – live video and a richly
diverse soundtrack ranging from Wagner and Shostakovich to Brian Eno and Deathprod. Powerful, impassioned, moving and original, Vardimon’s visceral choreography dramatically combines with text, music and awe-inspiring performances by a nine-strong company of international performers..

Having taken the sub-halfhour trip from Harborough to see the excellent Mark Little play Caveman, we were impressed by the whole Castle set-up – the auditorium and the roster of shows, the ambience, the free parking; but perhaps most of all the crowds flocking in from all points of the compass. .

the eagle "EWFOUVFST JO 3PNBO #SJUBJO FRIDAy 25th FebRuARy In 140 AD, two men - master and slave - venture beyond the edge of the known world on a dangerous and obsessive quest that will push them beyond the boundaries of loyalty and betrayal, friendship and hatred, deceit and heroism... The Roman epic adventure THE EAGLE stars Channing
Tatum and Jamie Bell and is directed by Academy Award winner Kevin Macdonald. 20 years earlier, Rome’s 5,000-strong Ninth Legion, under the command of Flavius Aquila, marched north carrying their treasured golden Eagle emblem. They never returned; Legion and Eagle simply vanished into the mists. Hearing a rumor that
the Eagle has been seen in a tribal temple in the far north, Flavius’ son Marcus (Tatum), determined to restore the tarnished reputation of his father, is galvanised into action. Accompanied only by his slave Esca (Bell), Marcus sets out into the vast and dangerous highlands of Scotland - to
confront its savage tribes, make peace with his father’s memory, and retrieve the hallowed Eagle. Along the way Marcus realizes that the mystery of his father’s disappearance may well be linked to the secret of his own slave’s identity and loyalty - a secret all the more pressing when the two come face-toface with the warriors of the fearsome Seal Prince (Tahar Rahim). Sport to Street &YIJCJUJPO UFMMT TUPSZ PG UIF USBJOFS UNTIL 3RD JULy An intriguing exhibition that traces the history of the training shoe from the earliest pair to the iconic brands we know today is to open at Northampton Museum and Art Gallery in the New Year. ‘Sport to Street’ follows the lifespan of the training shoe, from
its early beginnings as a soft-soled tennis shoe worn by Henry VIII to the iconic footwear of choice that it has become today. Northampton is home to one of the world’s most famous shoe collections and has the oldest known running shoe worn in the early 1860s by the then Lord Spencer. Sport to Street looks at the rise of rubber-soled footwear for sports in the 19th century and the early sneakers manufactured by legendary US companies Converse and Keds. By the 1970s trainers were still predominantly worn by sportsmen and women for their comfort and performance-enhancing design. This only started to change with the craze for aerobics, health and fitness and improved trainer technology that helped move them away from being simply practical items to footwear that makes a fashion statement. The exhibition, which features leading brands including Adidas, Nike, Puma, Reebok and New Balance, delves into the relationship between brands and sub cultures as well as brands and celebrities. It is part of a wider trainer project paid for by the Heritage Lottery Collecting Cultures fund to enhance collections in a specific field.

It now looks expensive, but is actually very affordable, and comes with an unbelievably long warranty. What more could you ask for if you’re in the market for a chic family car? The Sportage line-up now includes four engines, including brand-new highly efficient 1.6litre direct-injection petrol and 1.7-litre turbodiesel units; manual and automatic transmissions; and the choice of front-wheel drive or active all-wheel drive. My test car was the 1.7 CRDi 3 Sat Nav 2WD with Kia’s Intelligent Stop and Go (ISG) technology, which shuts down the engine when the car is stationary to help save fuel and reduce emissions. stylish and fun to drive. The car is extremely well specified. For example it features a fully integrated 7-inch touch screen satellite navigation with built in reversing camera and upgraded audio sound system. But forget all the gadgetry for a moment because, probably more importantly to most private buyers, the Sportage comes with a seven-year warranty that can be transferred to subsequent owners as long as the 100,000mile limit has not been reached. If that’s not a selling point, I don’t know what is. Looks-wise, the new Kia Sportage is a radical departure from the dull 2004 model it replaces. It is longer, lower and wider and now incorporates the key features of an SUV in a more athletic and muscular package. The high shoulder and low roof lines meet in striking reverse-angle C-pillars that improve the view out for rear passengers. And the

Inside, the spacious five-seat cabin is as dynamic as the exterior and is dominated by a multitier dashboard that narrows as it sweeps in from the sides towards the middle, leading into an eye-catching centre console. When it comes to loading up,
boot space is adequate, not massive, but the flagship Sportage 3 model makes up for that with full leather upholstery, heated seats, dual-zone climate control, Xenon headlights with washers, auto light control, front wiper de-icer, premium vision instrument cluster, auto-dimming rear view mirror and 18-inch alloy wheels. For a big car the Sportage is surprisingly easy to drive and park. This is down to a revised power-assisted steering system that ensures light, easy manoeu-
vrability at low speeds but with enough weightiness and feedback to make the car agile and stable at motorway speeds. The Kia also delivers an absorbent and comfortable ride on pretty much any road surface thanks to its all-independent suspension. And despite the rather ‘bling’ 18 inch alloys on my demo, the 1.7litre turbodiesel propelled Kia, with the fuel-saving assistance of ISG, is capable of returning 52.3 mpg, yet it is still a sprightly performer thanks to a slick six-
speed gearbox and a maximum power output of 114bhp. The new Kia Sportage is an impressive all-rounder. On one hand it’s perfect for young families who want a fashionable, sophisticated, fuel-efficient crossover. On the other hand the 1.7-litre turbodiesel front-wheel-drive model will be very appealing to business users because the Sportage has all the space and versatility of a compact SUV with the low CO2 and tax benefits of a smaller hatchback.. .

That’s how I felt driving the CitroÍn DS3 – and it’s no bad thing because it shows that the French offering is a fun, funky and lively motor. All good things as far as I’m concerned. The 1.6i 16v 150 sport version, on test here, was a blast to drive. It rips up the black stuff with aggression and grips corners with ease. Its 17 inch alloy wheels let some road rumble into the cabin at speed and the interior is a bit cramped, but it’s no big deal, because the DS3 delivers such an engaging drive that you forget all about the niggles. However, the DS3 isn’t all about being a boy-racer. The car delivers a sophisticated and comfortable ride, and quality is evident inside and out. On the ever important safety front,

the CitroĂŤn DS3 has a five star Euro NCAP rating for occupant protection; high levels of standard safety equipment include six airbags, a reinforced body structure and two IsoFix child seat anchorage points. One of the best aspects of the compact CitroĂŤn is that it redefines ‘bespoke’ motoring with an unrivalled choice of personalisation options - to reflect each driver’s individual performance, style and technology preferences. That means no DS3 need ever be the same, thanks to the array of different option combinations available. Customers can specify exterior and interior colour variations, materials, finishes, trims and equipment - even the key fob is tailored to the driver’s chosen body or roof colour. So, the CitroĂŤn can be masculine and sporty or
feminine and chic. My test car was in sport red and onyx black with ‘urban-tribe’ roof graphics, white wheels and a personalised number plate spelling out ‘BOY’. That was enough to satisfy me that I was in a more male oriented car! The DS3 is also packed with technology to further entertain and assist the driver. For portable music players, the car can be kitted out with auxiliary, USB and Bluetooth connectivity. MyWay, CitroĂŤn’s integrated widescreen colour satellite navigation system, can be specified - and for excellent acoustic performance, a new eight-speaker Hi-Fi system creates a rich audio experience in the cabin. The CitroĂŤn DS3 is a great alternative to other ‘premium’ small cars like the Mini, Fiat 500 and Alfa Romeo MiTo. It

is also competitively priced, starting at just £12,100 for the petrol VTi 95hp DSign, rising to £16,300 for the top-of-therange petrol THP 150hp and diesel HDi 110hp DSport models. The DS3 certainly doesn’t look like any other car on the road today – so if you’re in the market for a supermini, and being noticed is on the agenda, then this charismatic CitroÍn could be for you!

;
eicestershire and Northamptonshire are both blessed with an abundance of those scattered archaeological remains, open for all to explore, which serve to remind of us of distant times less fulsomely blessed. We refer to the region’s many deserted medieval villages, now traceable only as hills and hummocks in lonely fields, yet before 14th-century plague or 16th-century enclosure drove the rural population off the land, these were thriving communities.
Great Stretton, south of Leicester, is one of our most striking DMVs, as not quite all of the settlement was swept away by depopulation. Along with a traceable medieval pattern of thoroughfares and raised housing platforms in a single field, the tiny church of
St. Giles remains, now falling into a dangerous state of repair as it oversees its parish gravestones, its long-lost streets to the west and just a couple of cottages down on the road to the east. Prehistoric, Roman, AngloSaxon and post-medieval finds

hint at a rich, forgotten history. In the 14th century, none other than the Black Prince’s chaplain, Robert de Stretton, was baptised at St Giles’s traceried font. When Robert died a powerful Bishop, the Prince set up a fund for the priests to sing for soul in perpetuity for the village’s most famous soul. Stretton Magna, as we should properly call the village, is a Scheduled Ancient Monument; though standing on tiptoe to look into the empty church, it isn’t quite clear what it’s a monument to. the middle of the proposed site for the region’s controversially vast ‘eco-town’ housing estate, no plans have mentioned the protection of the site. It’s a romantic spot for a Sunday afternoon walk as the first signs of spring show, but a forbidding and gloomy place when the sun isn’t shining, and you’re driven to whistle a cheerful tune for old Robert.
