Year 3 Bridges Topic Week One (Week beginning 20/2/12) Money will be an important theme of our next half term. Children are going to be able to collect tokens to save and to spend on prizes in school. We will therefore begin the term by making wallets and talking about money matters. We will then introduce our topic, this to be on bridges. Children will have the chance to make their own bridges and to then begin to investigate different types of bridges that we have through databases. Film Club will resume on this week. Week Two (Week beginning 27/2/12) We will continue to investigate bridges, thinking about measures, making timelines and finding out further facts. As requested, we will look at bridges in art, thinking about their shapes, symmetry and some of the work of John Coatsworth. The end of this week will also be our celebrations of World Book Day! Week Three (Week beginning 5/3/12) The week will begin with a visit from the Expo Chef. This will also be Eco week in school. We will be having a trip to St Nicholas Park, as well as taking part in lots of activities to celebrate and highlight the importance of this week. Week Four (Week beginning 12/3/12) This week we will begin to think of our designs for bridges and to make them. We will follow instructions and look at bridges being made in real life. We will look at simulations and begin to plan our own bridges. In our maths we will think about costs involved in bridge making. Week Five (Week beginning 19/3/12) We will be making and evaluating our bridge designs, as well as making our own instructions to be followed for how we made the bridge. Week Six (Week beginning 26/3/12) This week will see our celebration of Easter. Amongst the activities, we will be finding out the story behind the festival, making Easter goodies and getting ready for the Enterprise Day. When we return to school we will be having a new weekly focus for the homework. As a break from the topics we will be having a weekly maths activity, each week to have a different focus based on add, take aways, times and divides. Don’t forget to keep checking the school website for regular updates and information on what we are getting up to!
