Year 1 Busy Bees Summer Newsletter 2012
Travelling through time. Week 1 (Back to school 16th April 2012)
This week we will be starting our new topic by encouraging the children to discuss the different types of transport and why what we use transport for. The children will then be encouraged to order pictures of transport on a timeline from oldest to most recent and giving reasons for their answers. On Tuesday 17th the whole school have the fantastic opportunity of watching a theatre School will be closed production in school called ‘Toms midnight garden’. on Friday 20th April The children have transformed the role play into a train station and called the train ‘The for a training day. Bee Express’. The children will be using their knowledge of telling the time to create a train timetable and they will be solving problems related to this.
Week 2 (Beginning 23rd April )
This week the children will be learning about trains and how the trains have changed since the 1800’s from Steam power to electricity. We will be looking at what trains were used for in the past and how this has changed. On Wednesday 25th April the children will be going to the George Stephenson Railway museum. We will also look at trains in other countries like Japan who are famous for inventing the high speed bullet train. Towards the end of the week the children will be creating an information book full of interesting facts about trains.
Week 3 (Beginning 30th April )
The children will be looking at different types of art work including the work of David Hockney and how his artwork was inspired by his daily drive to work. Hopefully the children will be inspired to then create their own painting of a small, local journey they take. We will also looking at the effects of different forces/motions on cars etc in science.
Week 4 (Beginning 7th May)
Bank holiday Monday (school closed) We will be listening and performing some poems about journeys and the children will be encouraged to write their own poem. The children will be taught how to use a tally chart which they will then use to carry out surveys to find out which is the most popular type of transport in our school. The children will then be asked to present their findings on a graph using a computer programme.
Week 5 (Beginning 14th May)
This week the children will be designing and making their own mode of transport in DT using wheels and axels. We will then be evaluating these and looking at which travels the furthest etc. We will also be using a computer programme to practise and experiment with the design of their vehicle.
Week 6 (Beginning 21st May)
Transport varies across the world and this week the children will plotting the different types of transport used on a world map and they will be encouraged to explain the reasons for their choices. On Friday 25th the children will be watching a production from Kinetic theatre company in the afternoon.
Week 7 (Beginning 28th May)
The children will finish their topic by imagining what transport will be like in the future. The children’s art work will be on sale in the art exhibition and we will end the term by celebrating the Queen’s Jubilee.
