KEY WEST, USA l POPULATION 25,000 l SIZE 5 square miles

Closer to Havana than Miami, Key West has always been the place to abscond to when things get too much up north. In the late 1940s, President Truman ran the country from here when the stress of Washington got to his head; Hemingway wrote his war novels here in peace under the Caribbean sun (in the company of 66

a six-toed cat called Snow White) and thousands of American students flock here annually to let off steam at the close of the spring term. Approaching via US Route 1 – the solitary highway that spans blue shallows all the way from mainland Florida – Key West’s escapist appeal is soon evident: handsome townhouses with creaking shutters and shady verandas, boho boutiques and

palm-lined promenades. Make for Mallory Square (on the main island, just behind Sunset Key, pictured in the foreground); this seafront open space – busy with acrobats, fire-eaters and other street entertainers – is the place to get the pulse of Key West life. l GETTING THERE Fly to Miami from Singapore or Kuala Lumpur on Turkish Airlines (one stop in Istanbul). The island is a 3½-hour drive away.

FREDERICK DOUGLASS HOUSE

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2016

A celebration of family and harvest, Chuseok (추석) is one of the biggest and most significant holidays in South Korea, where family members from all corners of the country will come together to share food and give thanks to their ancestors. Chuseok is the Korean equivalent of Thanksgiving Day and is honoured with traditional customs and rituals encompassing dress, food and dance. On the morning on Chuseok, family members gather to perform a memorial service called Charye to honour their ancestors. Formal Charye services are only performed twice a year: during Seollal (Lunar New Year) and Chuseok. The main difference between the two is that during Seollal the major representative food is tteokguk, a rice cake soup, while during 30

Traditionally, Korean women of each household would gather to handmake these half-moon shaped treats filled with sweet bean or chestnut, and it was believed that those who could make pretty songpyeon would be blessed with beautiful daughters. Today, songpyeon can be store bought, and is available in elaborate floral designs, intricately wrapped and adorned. A unique stage for local and international artists to showcase their wit and spirit, Art & About Sydney has been a shared celebration of creativity and identity for over 13 years, flourishing year on year with avid support from the government to foster a nurturing environment for the arts through grants, public art programs, and the encouragement of expressive installations. An amalgamation of theatre, dance, film, art, photography and so much more, the Art & About Sydney program has been transformed into an ongoing yearlong calendar of creativity, and for the upcoming months of September and October, visitors to the city can look forward to three standout events: Australian Life, Little Sydney Lives, and Hidden Sydney – The Glittering Mile. Australian Life is an outdoor gallery showcasing the unique sights that make up, well,

Australian life. Held at Hyde Park North, the exhibition will feature the work of 22 finalists, each chosen by a panel of photographers, artists and curators from work submitted by emerging and professional photographers across the country, all contending for the final prize of $10,000. From close-up moments of reflection to a wide-angle on the collective hopes and dreams of all Australians, these stunning shots are as diverse, interesting and surprising as the country that inspired them, and look beyond iconic images to reveal new insights into the Australian identity. EDITOR’S NOTE

MELISSA LORRAINE CHUA

INNER DEMONS I WAS READING A QUORA ARTICLE earlier today that answered the question: What is it like to work with Elon Musk? The former head of talent acquisition at SpaceX shared an anecdote that perfectly illustrated how he managed to turn what would potentially have been a crushing defeat into a motivational win for his team. She described how, within moments of the crash of the third Falcon 1 launch, Elon addressed the company ahead of the press and reminded them of the tremendous feat that they had already achieved, that he had prepared for the possibility of the failure, and encouraged them to pick themselves up, dust themselves off, and soldier on. “For my part, I will never give up, and I mean never,” and that if they stuck with him, they would win. Within moments, the energy of the crowd went from despair and defeat to a massive buzz of determination, and people began to focus on moving forward instead of looking back. In her own words, “I think most of us would have followed him into the gates of hell carrying suntan oil after that.” Although the article also prefaced itself by saying that “working with him isn’t a comfortable experience”, isn’t that where we find our greatest selves – outside of our comfort zone? It is said that you cannot dream yourself a character; you must hammer and forge one into being. Not many of us are blessed with a leader like Elon Musk, but I believe that within us all is the potential for a little Elon to exist – a little Jiminy Cricket-sized Elon Musk that sits on our shoulder to pick us up, dust us off, and motivates us to keep hustling every day. Here on the escape! team, we strive to give you the best that we can every issue, from editorial to design and beyond. Every issue is a product of our blood, sweat and tears (sometimes more of one than the others), but it’s a labour of love. Here’s to fighting the good fight.

Alila Hotels & Resorts has recently implemented a Zero Waste policy across its portfolio of hotels in Bali, with the “Alila Zero Waste to Landfill Project” affecting all of the flagship properties including Alila Villas Uluwatu, Alila Ubud, Alila Manggis and Alila Seminyak. Leaders in sustainable tourism and hotel development, the company has established a PIONEER (Positive Impact on Nature, Environment and Earth’s Resources) team at each hotel to ensure that their properties are in no way contributing to Bali’s increasing landfills, which threaten the environment with explosive greenhouse gasses. The company will also be investing in an Integrated Sustainable Resource Recovery Facility (iSuRRF) and laboratory where all waste will be transformed and diverted through a series of simple yet proven technical, biological and engineering systems. A full composting system will be implemented for all organic waste in each hotel; a permaculture organic garden will also be introduced to help develop sustainable and self-sufficient agricultural ecosystems; and otherwise uneconomic waste plastics like wraps and films will be converted into a light green crude oil that will be distilled down to diesel, kerosene, and gasoline for reuse in the hotels. alilahotels.com

Re-discovering the heart of Myanmar with Sedona Hotel Yangon AN UP-AND-COMING DESTINATION FOR LEISURE AND BUSINESS TRAVELLERS, MYANMAR – FORMERLY KNOWN AS BURMA – IS MAKING WAVES AS A HUB FOR TOURISTS AND BUSINESSES

TEXT: LESLEY ANNE DE CRUZ

hile my stay in Myanmar was a short one, it was not difficult to notice how the traditional Burmese culture blended in with some of the more modern cultures, practices, and technologies. It was commonplace to see Burmese women dressed in trendy and fashionable blouses coupled with the traditional Longyi (pronounced long-gee). This long woven fabric, typically made from vibrantly coloured cotton or silk, is wrapped around the waist and hangs like a long skirt. 16

FACETS OF TRADITION OF MODERNITY A more physical representation of the modernmeets-traditional vibe of Myanmar is the Sedona Hotel Yangon. Established with the concept of “warm Asian hospitality with contemporary indulgences”, the Sedona Hotel Yangon brings in a touch of modern luxury with the addition of its Inya Wing. The Inya Wing stands tall in contrast to the older Garden Wing and overlooks its namesake, the Inya Lake. With its colonial design,

a relatively new mall that houses a number of international brands. Or if you preferred a budget-friendly option, both the Scotts Market and China Town are only a short drive away from the hotel. While the roadside market of China Town is only open at night, both markets are a great place to find interesting souvenirs, knick-knacks and even jewellery; although jewellery shopping in the markets would be more suited for someone with experience, and who is able to “spot the difference”.

GASTRONOMY GALORE

the Garden Wing stands for a more traditional aspect of the hotel, both inside and out, whilst the Inya Wing brings forward a more modern stand point with its towering structure and luxury apartment-esque room designs. Hints of Myanmar’s ethnic culture is further represented in the interior of both wings through design accents of the Burmese Umbrella. Whilst the Burmese umbrella may seem like a rendition from a different age, it is still used as a functional accessory among the locals to shelter them from the strong sun.

A JAUNT AROUND TOWN Located mid-downtown, the Sedona Hotel Yangon prides itself as a “city hotel with a resort feel”. The perks of this mid-town location makes the hotel a quick 20-minute drive from the airport, but also hides itself away from the busy rush hour traffic in town. Guests have the option of hopping in a taxi for the short 15-minute commute to town, which would cost around US$3 to US$5. Taxis are in abundance, with most cab drivers actively signalling themselves out as a taxi, usually by honking their horns or flashing their headlights to get your attention. However, if you were heading out to the night markets such as China Town and were worried about getting transport back, you can always try asking the taxi driver if they would be willing to wait for you. Of course this would require the right price and some

For the month of October, and in celebration of its 20th anniversary, Sedona Hotel Yangon will be offering special programming and discounts for its various on-property restaurants. Guests of the hotel can look forward to sumptuous Bavarian cuisine every Wednesday, and a devilish Halloween Sunday Brunch and Spooky Sunday Seafood BBQ Dinner on 30 October. Diners at Orzo who savour the classic Osso Buco Blanco will receive a complimentary glass of wine, while those who choose to sample the spicy Szechuan Hot Pot of Du Fu can enjoy unlimited soft drinks and liquors for every table of five or more.

haggling, though we managed it for US$15 – not a very steep price at all, especially if you were to split it amongst a group of friends. If you’re lucky, you could also catch a glimpse of the Aung San Suu Kyi House or take a drive by the large front gates. Affectionately called “The Lady” by locals, Aung San Suu Kyi’s house – where she served her 15-year house arrest - sits on the edge of Inya Lake. The Sedona Hotel Yangon is also a short drive away from the famed Shwedagon Pagoda, a popular temple for the 85% of Buddhists in Myanmar. It is evident that the local Burmese are very dedicated to the temple and have made monumental efforts in its architecture, design and maintenance.

osta Asia recently celebrated a major milestone in Asia. It was the first international cruise company to deploy year-round homeport cruises in Asia in 2016 and in July this year, celebrated its 10-year anniversary in Asia. Over the decade, Costa Asia has brought innovation and excellence to voyagers onboard their ships with their creative cruise experiences. Each Costa Cruise offers an authentic European cruising experience with their “Italy at Sea” concept. This concept sees travellers immersing themselves in Italian culture, cuisine and entertainment all onboard any of the Costa Cruises ships. One of its most popular ships is the Costa Victoria, where travellers can experience a spectacular Carnival of Venice at Sea! One of the world’s most significant carnivals in Italy, the Carnival of Venice is an annual festival that originated after the victory of Venice in a war

in 1162. The Venetian carnival was a celebration from then on that saw locals reunite with friends and family at St Mark’s Square to dance. Today, tourists flock to join in the age-old tradition that is filled with musicians, acrobats, clowns, magicians, puppeteers, elaborate masks, costumes and parades. On Costa Victoria, the Carnival of Venice begins even before passengers get on board. Be greeted by festivities and celebrations in the spirit of the carnival with photo-taking opportunities with intricately designed Venetian costumes. Then at the Atrium of the ship, ‘live’ music formally welcomes guests to the Carnival of Venice. During this magical cruise, guests will be able to spot Venetian masks and people dressed in distinct Venetian costumes all set against a backdrop of Venetian décor and carnivalesque elements – the impressive Concorde Plaza will remind guests of the Mediterranean Sea with its marine oasis 18

theme, and the soothing Spa pool the splendour of Pompeii, while the Capriccio Bar is adorned with mosaics designed by Italian artist Emilio Tadini. Guests will have the opportunity to indulge in a variety of Carnival of Venice activities for a full Italian experience on Costa Victoria. There are also seminars to attend on makeup, weight loss and skin care. For those who lead a more active lifestyle, there are ball game tournaments and lots of exercise classes led by crewmembers. Come evenings, be enthralled by performers in a ‘Viva l’Italia’ variety show, which sees singers and dancers performing Italian opera, do acrobatic circus tricks, hip hop dances and even impersonation acts from Las Vegas! No Italian experience is complete if food has been left out of course. Taste the rich flavours of Italian cuisine at the five restaurants on board Costa Victoria. For a casual dining experience at your own leisure, Ristorante Buffet Bolero is your best bet for a selection of international cuisines served for breakfast and lunch. For bistro dining, La Tavernetta Pizzeria serves freshly made whole pizzas for snacking on from mid-afternoon till late evening. During the evening dinner service, dress up and head to either Fantasia Restaurant or Sinfonia Restaurant, the formal dining restaurant that serves authentic Italian dishes a la carte style. Watch out for the waiters’ extra special performances! Song and dance are always on the table for the crewmembers for a little extra entertainment for diners. For extra special occasions, book a reservation with Club Restaurant Magnifico for a romantic evening. For its 10th anniversary in Asia, Costa Asia has also added an authentic Asian style Hot Pot dining experience for guests at an extra cost. Fresh ingredients, including freshly prepared noodles,

choices from 21 different condiments, and Asian beers and wines just add to the genuine experience for guests who enjoy the comfort foods of home. Costa Asia is also working towards obtaining Halal certification for its kitchens for the cruising period of October 2016 to January 2017. Extra precautions have been taken to ensure a thoroughly cleaned kitchen, and only Halal-certified ingredients being used so Muslim guests can enjoy a peace of mind on board Costa Victoria. As Costa Cruises makes various stops at different ports during its journey, don’t forget to check out the land excursions each time the ship docks! In Phuket, guests have the opportunity to explore the tropical

Pompeii Spa and Fitness Centre for head-to-toe beauty and wellness treatments and free use of gym equipment. There’s also a Wimbledon tennis and volley court, and outdoors jogging track for a little sporty fun in the sun. For a little leisure, head to the PlayStation room, or the casino for rounds of roulette and slots, otherwise rack up your own game of poker at the card room. Quiet time can easily be had at the library that is well stocked with books of various genres. Teenagers and children can also enjoy leisure time on board. Drop kids off at Squok Club or Teens Club where age appropriate activities will ensure they’ll never be bored. There’s even a Rock Star Disco where young ones can shake loose and make friends with other passengers. In great cruising tradition, the last night of the cruise is reserved for the grand Gala. Dress to the nines for the last dinner at Fantasia Restaurant or Sinfonia Restaurant to have your picture taken with the rest of your travelling party. The Gala ends with an over-the-top Carnival of Venice Party. Masquerade masks are handed out to all guests to don for the occasion. Then dance the night away as the DJ spins the hottest tunes on deck!

ravel maybe all about speed these days with bullet trains, high speed rails, and commercial planes but the way to truly take in the essence of a place is through the unhurried, leisurely and measured pace of a slowmoving train which gives significance to every natural element you pass through. Measuring over 86 kilometres in length, the Alishan Forest Railway is a network of narrow gauge railways which runs throughout the popular mountain resort of Alishan in Chiayi County, Taiwan. Although originally initiated for the purposes of logging, the forest railway has since become a major tourist attraction. One of the popular reasons the railway has seen such great interest is the variety of tourist attractions placed along the Alishan Forest Railway. With

a slow comfortable pace, moving across several different tourist attractions, one is assured of an experience that is robust and utterly satisfying.

Fenqihu While those familiar with the Chinese language maybe on the lookout for a lake when reading the name of this place, no lake actually exists in the area. The name “Fenqihu” actually comes from locals who observed that the formation of mist and clouds over the valley surrounded by mountains actually resembled a lake. The “Fenqihu” stop on the Alishan Forest Railway was once considered a major checkpoint for people travelling to Alishan before the launch of the Alishan Highway. The stop is still popularly known for its railway boxed meal or lunch 20

The Fenqihu Historical Exhibition Room is another must visit spot in the town which houses the splendour of local history and culture. Chushan Sunrise viewing Whether you’re a morning person or not, the magic of welcoming a new day holds a certain allure to those who cherish the witnessing of first light as the glowing red sun rises above the mountain tops to smile upon the earth again. This is why missing out on the morning sunrise of Chushan will perhaps be a lingering regret if one visits Taiwan and does not embark upon this quest. Those looking to witness this beautiful sight would need to depart using the Chushan Sunrise train which leaves in the wee hours of the morning from Alishan Station or Zhaoping Station to get there. Due to the earth’s revolution, the famous sunrise view from Chushan is different depending on the seasons and times of the year with January having the latest sunrise times and June having the earliest. Trains from the station may depart as early as 4am in the morning but rest assured as the viewing of the rising sun is certainly nothing short of perfect.

Appreciate art, art appreciates! ART EXPO MALAYSIA PLUS 2016 PROMISES TO STUN

A

TEXT: JONATHAN GAN

pproaching its 10th anniversary this year, Art Expo Malaysia Plus returns once again with some 2,000 pieces of artworks from various styles, expressions and mediums to grace the Matrade Exhibition and Convention Centre (MECC) in Kuala Lumpur. This year, a total of 60 established and reputable art galleries from over 30 countries will coming together under one roof to present impressive artworks for public viewing. Being the longest running art fair in Southeast Asia, the expo is maintaining its long-standing tradition of keeping access to the expo free, a tradition the organisers have kept since 2007. The Malaysian bandwagon will consist of the largest delegation this year, representing a total of more than 100 local artists, with usual past exhibitors such as Henry Butcher Art Auctioneers, Masterpiece Auction, Bank Negara Malaysia Museum & Art Gallery, and National Visual Arts Gallery Malaysia, to name a few. This year’s expo will also see strong representation from Singapore with as many as eight galleries participating, making it the second largest exhibitor group. Amongst the esteemed galleries from Singapore are Art Xchange Gallery, READSEA Gallery, ArtBlue Studio, Cape of Good Hope Art Gallery, and Kato Art Duo. Other foreign exhibitors include Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Spain and many more. Art Expo Malaysia is under the Royal Patronage of Crown Prince and Crown Princess of Perlis, DYTM Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra ibni Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail, and DYTM Tuanku Hajjah Lailatul Shahreen Akashah Khalil. “We, as the Royal Patron, have watched over the growth of Art Expo Malaysia, and are proud of its achievements and progress. As years goes by, we see better quality of artworks and even masterpieces by some of the most famous names in the art world. We also see increasing visitors and most importantly increasing awareness towards art appreciation in the public,” said the duo of monarchs. Founder of Malaysia Art Expo, Datuk Vincent Sim commented that the fair would present a

good opportunity for investors to diversify their portfolios. “Looking at current economy situation, where the shares market is uncertain, and property market is slowing down, it’s a good time for investors to seriously look into the art market. It is a buyer’s market now, which makes it a good time to start collecting, the earlier the better. As the saying goes: Appreciate Art, Art Appreciates! Art Expo Malaysia is the right place to start your art collecting journey,” Sim commented. Last year, Art Expo Malaysia recorded a total of RM16.9 million in sales and visitors totalling some 24,200 people.

PLACES TO STAY

WELLNESS AS A WAY OF LIFE Rising from the concrete jungle of Singapore’s central business district is a beacon of verdant tranquillity. Oasia Hotel Downtown is designed quite unlike any other – and we don’t just mean because its check-in counter is perched on the 12th floor and fronted by an expansive green Sky Terrace. There are three pillars that make up the core of the hotel’s identity: Recharge, Refresh, and Refuel, all working in harmony to bring forward the philosophy of “Journeying Well”. Its undeniably chic designer façade and top-notch service made a stay that this

tranquil urban oasis the perfect relaxing fix to an intense work week. An exclusive Club Floor on Level 21 only accessible to Club Room and Suite guests comes replete with its own infinity pool (yay to private dipping) and a lounge that serves all-day snacks and drinks. Cocktail hour was our favourite time of day, when you can indulge in a free-flow of draught beer and house wines, accompanied by delectable little canapés – great for getting the party started. And if you’re looking for somewhere to continue that party, CIN CIN Bar downstairs is a kitschy

little boutique bar that is absolutely gorgeous with its art deco-inspired interiors and divine cocktails. If you feel the need to work off a night of (possibly excessive) eating and drinking, the cardio-inclined can take advantage of the wellstocked 24-hour gym, while the more cardiochallenged (like me) will be happy to know that the Sky Terrace on Level 12 is a great spot to squeeze in a bit of yoga – just add the mat already supplied in your room. #StayOasia #JourneyWell #OasiaDowntown

TECH TALK CAMERAS

CAUGHT ON CAMERA

We personally test-drove some of the most portable models in the market to single out three outstanding traveller’s companions – and we have the shots to prove it!

SONY RX100 IV This pocket-sized powerhouse certainly packs a punch! For those who want dreamy, aperturepriority shots without having to lug around anything larger than a hefty powerbank, this is your go-to camera. The ZEISS® Vario-Sonnar T* 24-70mm (35mm equivalent) F1.8-F2.8 lens means great macro shots (perfect for snapping food), while the high speed Anti-Distortion Shutter (maximum speed of 1/32000 second) minimises the “rolling shutter” effect for crisp shots even if the subject is moving (good for sneaking a stealthy snap of that good-looking guy on the street). It even has 4K video shooting and 40x super slow motion capture, and WiFi connectivity for instant sharing on social media! The only downside – and we’re loathe to put it that way because we adore the RX100 IV – is its lack of interchangeable lens, which means that this model will remain purely for point-and-shoot. Verdict: perfect for social media enthusiasts

CANON EOS M3 One of the more accessibly-priced mirrorless models in the market, the M3 features an advanced Hybrid CMOS AF III autofocus system which performs up to 6.1x faster than the EOS M, while its DIGIC 6 Image Processor with ISO sensitivity range of 100 to 12800, expandable up to 25600, and Optical Image Stabilizer which helps to compensate for up to 4 stops of camera shake, mean images that are clearer, brighter, and have richer colours. For those who find the manual controls of a professional DSLR intimidating, the EOS M3 eases you in with three dials (or touch screen options) that let you control aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. The effects are displayed on the bright, 3.0” Clear View II LCD monitor in real time, so you get a comprehensive understanding of how adjusting one – or all – of these values will affect your eventual shot. Great starter for eventually graduating to a full-blown DSLR. Verdict: great starter for the photography student

CASIO EXILIM EX-FR100 Casio Singapore launched the outdoor camera sometime end-2015, but it still stays hip and relevant even today. The camera features a rugged shock, water and dust-resistant design that can be easily operated single-handedly. Most people will opt for a phone out of convenience but most models are not water resistant. This, however, was the perfect device for roughing it out, especially to the beach and resort swimming pools to capture breathtaking moments. The FR100 also comes in a detachable design, which enables users to attach the camera module virtually anywhere via an assortment of aftermarket accessories. Strap it to your head and video log your trails, mount it to your mountain bicycles while exploring a multitude of landscapes, or simply put it on a selfie stick for a group photo – its 16mm ultra wide-angle lens makes it perfect for large group photos as well as landscape shots. Unlike other action cameras in the market where you have to shoot blind, the FR100 has a viewfinder that doubles as a clicker and is ideal for solo travellers who wish to document their journey, knowing their images are framed perfectly. Verdict: best for solo adventurers

Critically-acclaimed international performers INNERGIE’S UNIVERSALLY ADAPTABLE MULTI-TASKERS MAKE TRAVELLING HASSLE-FREE AND LESS BULKY THAN EVER BEFORE

O

n a recent trip overseas, I found myself in a familiar predicament – the room that I was staying in had many power sockets, but I had only brought one power adaptor. The challenge became about how I was going to juggle charging my laptop, phone, tablet, power bank, and camera, all in one night. I usually had to rely on a carefully calculated formula involving remaining battery life (which device was critically low, so that I would know to leave it plugged in for the longest?) and priorities (was it more important to finish up on replying some work emails, load images from camera to edit on my laptop, or text my friends and family to assure them that I was safe?), but this time I had come prepared with something new: the Innergie PowerGear ICE 65, LifeHub Plus, and WizardTip. With their powers combined, I had the ability to simultaneously charge three devices

in one plug, sans external adaptor. The PowerGear ICE 65 is the powerhouse of the set-up with its highly efficient 90% power conversion rate that makes charging more efficient, so your devices reach maximum battery life faster while maintaining safe operating temperatures. It also comes with interchangeable plugs compatible with more than 150 countries around the world, so you won’t have to bring a separate adaptor. The base kit comes with six tips for the most popular laptops, so you are not constrained by make and model. Innergie even offers free tips if your particular laptop does not fit any of the six pre-packaged ones! In my hotel room, I preferred to pair the PowerGear ICE 65 with the LifeHub Plus which powers up to three devices at once. I no longer have to choose between checking Facebook on my phone, watching my pre-loaded videos on

my tablet, and scanning through my camera for images of the day. In airport waiting lounges and cafes, I found the WizardTip extremely useful as a sleek and subtle way to add an additional USB charging port to my laptop. It was the saving grace for my HP EliteBook, which, although supremely svelte and portable, is a little lacking in the USB port department. The best part? All three products come with Innergie’s InnerShield™ Protection Technology, which protects from over-current, over-voltage, over-temperature, over-power and shortcircuiting, so you don’t have to worry about over-loading in spite of multiple devices charging at once. Innergie also believes in responsible consumption, which is why their smart technology is designed with GreenSense™, so that products are more energy efficient with minimal wastage for a greener Earth.

INTERVIEW

IT’S A BOW-TIFUL LIFE Go inside the head of Peter Dekker, modern-day collector of antique arms

not published about them. That’s where my adventure started.

A

s a young lad, Peter Dekker was first introduced to traditional Manchurian weaponry through watching Chinese martial art movies. Several decades later, Dekker has turned his childhood interest into a profession, and is now a travelling weapons collector specialising in the restoration, education and trade of antique arms. What kick-started your decision to become a serious bow collector? I was in China for study, and had always had an interest for antique Chinese arms. In meeting a local collector, he had an old Chinese composite bow. I was puzzled about the deeply reflexed shape of it and he explained to me how they were strung. At once, I was hooked. I bought the bow in question and spent nights reading all there was on the subject. It took about a week before I ran out of sources, and realised not too much was known, or at least

What differentiates a good bow from a bad one? To look for a good bow you first look at geometry. Are all parts well shaped? Is there effort made to minimse the weight in the working limbs and the tips? Once the basics are good, you can look at decoration, if any, and how intricate it is. Other factors that determine a good bow are condition, quality, and rarity. A piece that was initially of high quality can be in bad condition today, or a piece that was of medium workmanship can be in pristine condition. In such cases, the next question is rarity: is the medium-quality piece unique, or are many available? All these factors determine whether the bow is a good buy for a collection, or even, whether it is good value for money. Ideally, we want high quality items in excellent condition that are very rare. Not surprisingly, I have only a handful of such bows.

This, Peter Dekker’s prized possession, was possibly made by a Palace bowyer, its decor indicating that it was meant for someone close to the emperor. The first examples of this design were seen on bows of the illustrious Qianlong Emperor. This one is probably from the times of his son, the Jiaqing Emperor.

Golden horn bellies and flower decorations on the inside of the bow

Most interesting travel experience? Some of my best memories, bow collectorwise, are from archery festivals around the world. During an archery festival in Ledu, China, I found out for the first time that my research and website were also followed by Manchus – I had dinner with some organisers of the festival, and we ended up in a Mongolian restaurant where they ordered the nomadicstyle dish of goat-on-bone, and some side dishes that were commonly eaten by Manchus and Mongols of the northern frontier of Qing. We had some beers and they started to sing traditional Manchu songs. The language has all but died out, with just a few elders left to speak it, but there are some of the young still trying to keep it alive. I never expected to hear this language, or these songs, in my lifetime. It was a wonderful experience.

Peter Dekker collects and sells antique weapons online with a special interest in Chinese traditional arms. Visit his webpage at www.mandarinmansion.com 42

SUMMER’S

GOLDEN GLEAM

The Australian obsession with the perfect beach life starts here in Queensland, where sun-drenched coasts, trendy riverside towns, and lush green hinterlands will beckon you to lay back, relax and take root

45

AUSTRALIANS CALL QUEENSLAND ‘THE SUNSHINE STATE’ for good reason – with 300 sun-filled days a year, it’s the spiritual home of the Aussie beach holiday, with thousands of swimmable areas dotting its breathtaking coastline. Stretching nearly 7,000 kilometres, Queensland’s coast is only just shy of the distance between New York and Los Angeles! From its southern cosmopolitan shoreline where you’ll find the international playground of the Gold Coast, to the tropical northern extremities of the shimmering Cairns beaches, and the chic and stylish beachside attractions of Noosa and the Sunshine Coast, there are countless activities to experience and fabulous towns to explore, all set against a backdrop of brilliant days, balmy nights and a deeply entrenched beach culture.

Stretching some 2,300 glittering kilometres along the Queensland coastline, the Great Barrier Reef is the only single living structure visible from space.

While many may extol the virtues of her pretty shores, others will argue that the real star of Queensland is actually just off her coast. A visit to this northeastern state simply wouldn’t be complete without a dip into one of the great natural wonders of the world – the Great Barrier Reef, home not just to some of the world’s best diving and snorkelling, but also more than 900 islands some of the best luxury resorts in the country. No matter how many images you’ve seen or stories you’ve heard, nothing compares to a personal encounter with this spectacular miracle of nature. Stretching some 2,300 glittering kilometres up the Queensland coastline, from the town of Bundaberg to virtually the tip of Cape York, the Great Barrier Reef is world-renowned as the only single living structure visible from space. Come November, the entire Great Barrier Reef erupts into life with spawning coral. This usually happens on the weekend after the full moon, and it’s an amazing sigh to behold, wherever on the reef you happen to be.

Diving into the Great Barrier Reef

COVER STORY

As one of the world’s largest coral reef systems, the Great Barrier Reef is home to thousands of marine species, including dugongs, turtles, dolphins, whales, more than 1,500 species of fish and 4,000 types of molluscs. Not just restricted to underwater critters, there are also about 200 species of bird that thrive (and depend) on the reef for survival. Its sheer size means there are virtually dozens of different ways to experience this incredible wonder, with tour operators operating in towns up and down the Queensland coast (including Bundaberg, Airlie Beach, Townsville and Cairns). You can fly overhead and sail directly on top of it, or even sleep on it – yes, sleep on it – if you like. But snorkelling or diving those clear turquoise depths offers a magic all of its own, giving you an intimate look at the kaleidoscopic colours, unbelievable array of marine life and crystal clear waters which stretch seemingly into infinity. In some parts of the reef you can dive with green turtles or manta rays, while others offer the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to swim with rare dwarf minke whales (Eye to Eye Marine Encounters; marine encounters.com. au). Be sure to tick off your scavenger list of the reef’s Great 8: giant clams, turtles, clown fish, manta ray, potato cod, Maori wrasse, sharks and whales. Fat, friendly potato cod appear every day at the famous Cod Hole, expecting treats from visiting divers. The coral here is arguably some of the reef’s best, too. Want a truly unique experience? How about a dive into a shipwreck? The historical SS Yongala shipwreck has become the adopted home of hugely colourful marine life, and is definitely something to add on to your bucket list. Get here by boat from Townsville, or through various other day trips available for charter (yongaladive.com.au).

WHERE TO STAY

If sleeping on a yacht isn’t your cup of tea, there are a myriad resorts and accommodation options along the length and breadth of the Great Barrier Reef. While there are many suitable for all variety of budgets and getaways, we hope recommend indulging in a stay at the One&Only Hayman Island Resort. While you can look forward to exceptional level of service, and no less than Perrier-Jouët as the house champagne, what makes this retreat so special is that the entirety of Hayman, the very northernmost island in the Whitsundays, is dedicated to this resort, leaving you free to roam about from tip to toe, exploring walking tracks, partaking in aquatic activities such as fishing and snorkelling, and finding bliss in one extremely lovely spa (oneandonlyresorts.com).

REEFSLEEPING IN THE WHITSUNDAYS We’re going to let you in on one of Australia’s best-kept holiday secrets: it’s possible to hire your own yacht, without any prior boating experience, to sail freely around the Whitsunday Islands all on your own! A dazzling collection of 74 stunning islands and a handful of worldclass resorts, the Whitsundays not only offers some of the world’s best sailing conditions, it’s also wonderfully safe and sheltered so even first-time captains can drop anchor and easily spend a week or two on its waters. Sleep, cook and eat on board, and spend your days snorkelling, fishing and exploring the many beautiful islands, sailing from one to the next whenever it pleases you. Locals call this ‘bareboating’, as you’re not supplied with a crew, but vessels are certainly well equipped: you’ll find everything from bed linen to bottle openers on board (charteryachtsaustralia.com.au). Be sure to drop by the Heart Reef if you can, roughly 40 nautical miles from the mainland.

Find sanctuary at Whitehaven Beach

IMAGES: TOURISM AND EVENTS QUEENSLAND

The views here are so breath-taking that arriving visitors often forget – just for a moment – to take photos of this incredible scene. Instead, they’re too busy mentally filming the translucent blue waters that glitter like a million diamonds, and the seemingly endless stretch of greenery-fringed beach and silica-white sands here on Whitehaven Beach’s seven-kilometre stretch. This regular contender in Top Ten beach lists around the world is one of those all-too rare locations that actually looks better in real life than the way it’s depicted in brochures or on postcards – it’s just that difficult to do it justice. Take a short bush walk to the lookout at Tongue Point to see the magical swirling of aquatic colours in Whitehaven’s ocean inlet. Visitors aren’t usually allowed to stay overnight on this beach (unless you’ve received a special camping permit or are commandeering your own yacht), so the beach is always sparkling clean. Add to that the area’s pristine, azure waters, which are protected by the Great Barrier Reef’s UNESCO World Heritage listing, vast swathes of untouched,

lushly green foliage and that famously white, glitteringly pure sand, you’ve got the perfect formula for paradise. There is a fantastic walk at the northern end of the beach called Hill Inlet Walk, a short trek that will take you up to a lookout offering expansive views over Hill Inlet and Whitehaven. There are several options for exploring the area, including a full-day cruise that will bring you sailing through the sparkling islands with the wind in your hair. Arrive with a picnic lunch and you can explore the beach at your leisure. Alternatively, make a grand entrance by chopper as you’re whisked through the skies to land directly on Whitehaven’s sparkling sands before the champagne cork is popped for a celebratory drink (gslaviation. com.au). Take things up a notch and sail in by seaplane – voted one of the world’s best aerial tours, guests can zoom over the Great Barrier Marine Park and many of the islands before making a gentle landing on the warm, shallow water and stepping out onto the beach (airwhitsunday.com.au). There’s something thrilling about the idea of soaring past one of the world’s most incredible natural wonders that seems to sail above (pun intended) all others – all the more so when you’ve snorkelled the Great Barrier Reef.

IT‘S 11AM AND THE GENTLE SUMMER SUN begins to warm my skin – like kisses from the divine. The late August air shimmers on the horizon and the occasional cool breeze wafts through the moorlands. Blooming fields of flowers have come and gone, and all that remains are a couple of loose clusters scattered across the park. The skies are a vibrant azure – a fine canvas for the almighty Alps that stood beneath it. And even though in late summer the Alps are just mostly bare, jagged rocks with the exception of its highest peaks, it is still breathtaking to be in such close proximity to the mountains.

Fertilised and dry grass meadows are intermingled with mountain forest, high and flat moorland and mountain lakes to form a multifarious mosaic. In Alp Flix alone, 2,092 species of flora and fauna were discovered within a span of 24 hours back in 2000. “I have discovered about 500 species of flowers myself earlier this season,” says our local guide Victoria, an affable middle-aged lady of Romansh heritage. “Now that summer is ending soon, we are using the fields to gather hay and make farming tools. In the next two months, autumn magic happens and the leaves turn to a gold, red and rust colour. The view is simply beautiful, especially from high up the mountains.” Unsurprisingly, Alp Flix is a tranquil country

Now, all you can hear is the ringing of cowbells, the relaxing sound of gentle streams flowing down the Alps and the occasional shuffling of hiking boots against gravelled paths. With a relatively flat terrace set 2,000m above sea level, it is an appropriate area for hiking beginners, families or group of friends for a great alpine summer adventure. The circular hike is an ideal route for those pressed for time. It starts at the new parking area in Alp Flix and leads into the moorland plain, Alpine hamlets of Tgalucas and Cuorts, and eventually Flix lakes and Lai Neir before looping back. The treasure trove of plant species to be discovered is varied and includes plants native to high altitudes, alpine flowers, berries and even mushrooms! “A lot of our visitors from

At the Savognin Visitor Center, visitors can even get locals to check if the mushrooms are safe for eating. Lake Blue (Lej Blue in Romanash) is a work of art in itself. As if the finest of mirrors, the expansive blue sky and neat rows of pine trees reflect a flawless image in the water. For 36 Francs, parents may purchase a discovery kit for their kids to explore the park like a researcher. The questionnaires allow kids to identify the flora and fauna in the park, test the pH of the lake or simply learn about the ecology of the park. Piz Calderas and Piz D’err fringe the portrait and all that was missing from this unrivalled image are canapés and champagne for a relaxing picnic. If picnicking can’t be arranged, try Berghaus Piz Platta, a mountain house located away from Lake Blue. It is as an Alp hut in summer seasons, offering an overnight roof for hikers and a place to rest and refuel for daytime visitors. Here, you can get an authentic Swiss meal starting with a refreshing cup of Apple Shorley, fresh apple juice mixed with carbonated water.

AT THE HOME OF THE KING OF THE ALPS Divided by a series of mid-range Alps, almost parallel to Savognin on the west, is Casti-Wergenstein. This idyllic municipality transports one back into the past as the valleys and rustic buildings have remained untouched since the 1700s, or even earlier. From the bottom, rustic Swiss cottages dot the grassy hills covered in pines that stand straight up like spikes that flank the roads that wind around the mountain. Standing on the other (peak) end of the valley peeking down, rivers are streaming through deep valleys in the far distance next to a small but close knitted township nearby. RNP Naturpark Beverin is the highlight of this region, and home to hundreds of mountain capricorns (also known as ibexes in Romansh) living on the cliffs around Piz Beverin. Together with 3,000 inhabitants, Naturpark Beverin staff strive to find solutions to work towards an economically and socially sustainable development in this region. This is the reason why nature and educational tours are highly recommended here. Owner of a dairy company and local guide Michael Magnasch invited us into his alp dairy on Alp Curtginatsch, also the highest alp with cows of the canton Graubünden. One of the biggest alp dairies in the region, it has approximately 100 cows and they are milked daily. The 2,000L of milk collected every morning is used to produce cheese and other dairy products, shared our Belgium postman, who works as a Swiss cheese maker during the summer. Right out in front of the alp dairy is the viridescent pasture leading up to the crown of the rocky grey mountains. There is no need to conquer the mountain because from up here, it already feels like the summit of the world – peaceful and serene. Though it is summer, temperatures run at a cool 19˚C at its warmest. The unspoilt landscape is only viable on foot and with a bit of luck, ibexes and marmots can be

spotted. Interestingly, ibexes were only re-introduced to Switzerland in 1956. They were once used as a food source until their numbers dwindled to nothing and locals had to steal some from the borders of Italy to breed them in St Gallen. Thankfully, this (illegal?) operation was a success and the alpine animals were returned to the wild in Naturpark Beverin and Italy. Stafel Nurdein was built in 1925 for the sole purpose of milking cows. Up until the 1950s, the alp hut was fully functional but was abandoned thereafter. In recent years, there have been plans to convert this rundown cottage into an alp house. Because the moorland is a protected area of national importance, showers and sewage systems are prohibited. Thus, only a simple bed and breakfast will be made available at a cost of 30 Francs per night for communal sleeping quarters, and 60 Francs per night for a private room, which will be more suited for families and groups of friends. Isolated patches of nature, mostly evergreen meadows and rolling tussocks, surround the cottage. There are lots of trekking routes available in this area to fit all levels of experience and fitness. Call it sheer luck but while on a trek, we managed to spot some alpine marmots popping out of their burrow, surveying the environment before scurrying back, and a herd of ibexes at the peak of the Alp.

CANYONS AND MOUNTAIN PASSES Life is full of ups and downs – especially so at Viamala, a route within the Naturpark Beverin in the heart of the Graubünden canton. But here, the ups and downs are simply magical. A 20-minute car ride north of CastiWergenstein will bring you to the Viamala Gorge, an impressive natural monument with up to 300m-high rock faces, which, at their narrowest spot, are only a few metres apart. Carved through the massive cliffs thousands of years ago by glacial ice and the waters of the Rhine (Hinterhein), the Viamala Canyon still contains living evidence of its fascinating history to discover today. As we walked along the Viamala Route 13 towards the famed Wildener Brücke (Wilderner Bridge), our eyes catch sight of wooden figures of Roman statues placed within gaps at the top of a cliff. That was the treacherous path used 2,000 years ago by the Romans to move from Italy to South Germany. The surroundings might be an exquisite sight but it was a wild and life-threatening journey for the travellers that once walked this path. Standing on the bridge, the first thing you’ll be able to spot is the zigzagging 359-step stairway leading down to the heart of the gorge from the visitor center. At the end of it, there is a rock gallery that showcases limestone, quartz and slate that make up these noble walls and rugged canyon.

The Viamala Gorge is just a pit stop along The Via Spluga, a classical cultural hiking route within the central Alps that, throughout the centuries, has linked the towns of Thusis and Chiavenna. The route offers the opportunity to appreciate a slice of genuine history, and allow hikers to know more about the mountain terrain alongside the local population whose life has been greatly influenced by generations of travellers making their way across the Alpine pass. It covers a distance of 65km and begins in Thusis (720m), all the way down south to Chiavenna (333m). There is also a shorted, leisurely 45-minute hike route from Viamala Gorge to Zillis, Rania. Stephan Kaufmann, deputy director of Viamala Tourism, lead our group. Within the forest trail, the sky vanishes almost completely, leaving fragments of blue peeking through the canopy. Sparse pines cover each square foot of forest floor and the air reeks of rotting wood. It doesn’t take long before we arrive at Viamala pedestrian bridge that was brilliantly constructed in 1999. The bridge is made of steel and stone and although it looks unstable, is very strong. “You can jump on it without worries,” jokes Stephan. THE UNFAMILIAR GREEN OASIS Famous writer Max Frisch made Onsernone Valley his home back in 1964. He liked the idea of living within nature’s nest for its abundance of fresh air, calmness, and stillness, and the surroundings inspired his tale, ‘Main in the Holocene’. Amazingly, this piece of land that shares a topography similar to Singapore has managed to retain its unique characteristics for future generations to enjoy, an effort of the Locarnese National Park Project. “Technically, you are now standing on two continents: Africa and Europe. Because of tectonic plate movements, a collision occurred with both continents that led to the fold up of a high mountain range, known as the Central Alps,” says Giovanni, a renowned meteorologist in Switzerland, as he pokes his 60

hiking sticks into the ground while we climb up Salei. “Anticyclones form from air masses cool down to temperatures lower than their surroundings, which causes the air to contract slightly, making the air denser. Because of this, the humid air mass that comes from Italy makes the region moist and this results in dense rainforest.“ Salei is easily accessible, and a fun place to spend the day. From Vergeletto-Zott, a tiny four-seater cableway takes passengers up to Alp Salei for a panoramic view of the deep canyons and Amazon-like forest. The hike is easy and the trails are well paved with routes that smoothly ascend. Wild grass line the path and larch trees slope over the forest floor. high altitude will take some time. We reach our final destination, Pond Salei, in no time at all. It lacks an ethereal sparkle under the sunlight but there is a deep sense of serenity and achievement when we see it. Ancient villages where people still live and work today will be part of the future Locarnese National Park and these will serve as a one-stop cultural centre for visitors. One fine example is the Farina Bóna Mills in Vergeletto, which produces Farina Bóna, a traditional corn flour made from Zea corn. The corn is first toasted then finely ground

into powder and used to enhance flavours of food. A familiar smell of popcorn fills the air here, where a modern industrial coffee grinder is used to produce Farina Bóna. It is highly likely that Ilario Garbani, the owner of the mill, is the only one left in the world to produce this corn flour. Ilario started his mill out of a school project that soon turned into a business opportunity. But instead of focusing on making a profit out of an archaic tradition, Ilario uses the mill to educate visitors and lays the foundation of how Farina Bóna has played an integral part of Onsernone’s history.

Madonna del Sasso, the pilgrimage church, is the most noticeable landmark of Locarno, as it seems to float about the town when viewed from a distance. The church was consecrated in 1487 on the spot where the Virgin Mary was said to have appeared to Brother Bartolomeo da Ivrea from the San Francesco monastery. It remains one of the most important religious and historical sites in

the canton of Ticino and many locals choose to walk up from the city centre instead of opting for the funicular. Restoration took place in 2012 but statues have been replaced with new ones. From the corridors of the chapel, we have a stunning bird’s eye view of the city, lake and mountain range. I may be back in the city but I feel at peace in the chapel adorned with beautiful frescoes. Before the 1950s, Cardada and Cimetta were destinations for winter sport enthusiasts, who ascended the mountain on foot while carrying their skis. Then, between 1951 and 1965, ski lifts were built to entice more skiers onto the slopes. Together with the cableway that began in December 1953, tourism began to flourish with the help of restaurant and cabin openings in the vicinity. Since then, the cableway has been renovated extensively to meet the needs of affluent visitors and the latest one is a panoramic teardrop shaped cableway. Nowadays, the mountains remain a simple but popular getaway to nature throughout the whole year. 62

WHERE TO STAY

A short drive away from Locarno is Ascona, the lowest lying town in Switzerland. Its mild climate, old town, lake promenade and Latin-ambient street cafes are just some of the reasons why it is so well received. Hotel Ascovilla is a four-star accommodation that comes complete with five-star hospitality services. The hotel resembles a bungalow and its hospitality makes it seem like you’re staying over at a friend’s place than a cold and rigid hotel. Apart from its homeliness and modern contemporary designs, the hotel includes facilities like a heated outdoor pool and complimentary use of bicycles for easy exploration of Ascona; the lake is just a five-minute bike ride away. Don’t forget to pack bathing suits for the summer!

SWITZERLAND

GETTING THERE

Switzerland International Air Lines (SWISS) operates direct flights from Singapore Changi Airport to Zürich Airport seven times a week. Timings are adequately scheduled to allow travellers to get the most of the day they land or depart. Since September 2016, frequent fliers may also order a la carte meals in economy class, including traditional Zürich-style sliced veal in creamy sauce or a platter of Swiss cold cuts and cheeses, accompanied with a halfbottle California Chardonnay or Italian Sangiovese. Nowadays, the mountains remain a simple but popular getaway to nature throughout the whole year.

GETTING AROUND

Switzerland may be one of the smallest countries in Europe but it does take a few hours to travel from one end to the other. If you plan to move about cities, we highly recommend the Swiss Travel Pass. Covering all buses, most trains and boats, the Swiss Travel Pass is available in three-, four-, eight- or 15- consecutive day formats. There’s also an alternate flex package that allows for non-consecutive days of travel over the period of a month. Complimentary museum visits and a 50% off on all mountain railways are some of the additional perks that come with the pass.

WHEN TO GO

July and August are high summer seasons for Switzerland, where all the mountain villages and high passes are up and running in full throttle. The Alpines are still much colder than most places even in the summer so pack light jackets just in case.

The Cradle of Yoga

India is an assault on the senses, challenging you with its extremes, prompting you to contemplate who you are and where you stand in the world. In ashrams across the country, Najiah Ramlee uncovers what it takes to be a yogi here

INDIA, THE LARGEST DEMOCRACY in the world is also the world’s second largest nation with 1.25 billion people calling it home. Seemingly homogeneous at first glance, this nation of 29 states and 7 union territories is actually so diverse it is almost shocking. Nearly all of the world’s religions are represented here, while 22 different languages are officially recognised with many others being spoken across the country. India has had its share of foreign rule as well that spans over 1,100 years, with the British claiming 300 and the Mughals 800. This hotbed of various influences allowed for the shaping of Indian society as we see it today. There is no concrete history of the birth of yoga – many of the sacred texts and teachings were transmitted orally and were considered secret for many years. While the Indus-Sarasvati civilisation of northern India is widely credited with yoga’s beginnings over 5,000 years ago, some historians believe yoga may have started as early as ten millennia ago. Pre-classical yoga was developed by the Brahmans and Rishis (mystic seers); they documented their practices and beliefs in the Upanishads, of which the most renowned is the Bhagavad-Gîtâ, composed around 500 BC. The Upanishads taught that excellence could only be achieved through the sacrifice of the ego via self-knowledge, action (karma yoga) and wisdom (jnana yoga). In classical yoga, there is an “eight limbed path” containing the steps and stages towards obtaining Samadhi or enlightenment. In contrast, post-classical and modern yoga rejected the ancient teachings in favour of embracing the physical body as the true path to achieving enlightenment; the yoga masters created a system of practices designed to rejuvenate the body and prolong life, and developed a new form of practice called

Tantra Yoga (what we refer to today as Hatha Yoga), consisting radical techniques to cleanse the body and mind in a bid to free the flesh from the binds of physical existence.

DELHI My journey started in New Delhi, all ready for International Yoga Day on 21 June – it was in its second year of celebrations following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s proposal to the United Nations General Assembly in 2014. “Yoga is an invaluable gift of India’s ancient tradition. It embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfilment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well-being. It is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and the nature. By changing our lifestyle and creating consciousness, it can help in well-being.” Having been adopted by the majority of the member nations, International Yoga Day is celebrated by yogis worldwide.

Delhi is recognised amongst the world’s longest continuously inhabited cities and longest serving capitals. Known as the city of seven towns, the city has not forgotten the importance of its past glory and continues to pay tribute to the rice and diverse cultures that call it home.

HARIDWAR The next stop was to visit Haridwar, in the state of Uttarakhand, where tourists can witness devotees washing their sins away in the holy Ganges river in the daily Aarti ritual to attain Moksha or true freedom. The river flows from the Himalayas and enters North India for the first time in this city. It is regarded as one of the 7 holiest places to Hindus. It is said that Amrit, the elixir of immortality, was spilt at Har ki Pauri while carried by the celestial bird Garuda and that is celebrated every 12 years with a huge festival of ritualistic bathing by both pilgrims and tourists alike. Nevertheless, even the daily rituals are incredible to behold, where sadhus or pilgrims clad in orange robes or just loincloths join the masses on the banks of the Ganges with both pilgrims and devotees bathing in the freezing waters as the priests chant. Everyone else can also join in the fun by lighting the beautiful flower offerings and setting them afloat in the river and joining in the chants.

In Haridwar, Kumbh Mela is practiced once every twelve years, a mass pilgrimage of faith when Hindus gather to bathe in the sacred waters of the Ganges

66

Just a short distance away (25km) is Rishikesh, also known to many Western yoga enthusiasts as the Yoga Capital of the World and to Hindu pilgrims, one of the holiest places where sages have visited to gain enlightenment since ancient times. The city is meat and alcohol free, one where cows have right of way and cow poop is constantly swept away. Rishikesh came to fame thanks to the Beatles who visited in 1968 and were inspired to record the ‘The Happy Rishikesh Song’. Here, one is reminded of the extremes of India, where poverty and pollution litter the streets. However, when one steps into an Ashram, it’s a completely different story - almost as though they were two separate places. The largest ashram with over 1000 rooms in Rishikesh is the Parmarth Niketan, along the banks of the Ganges, founded in 1942. Visitors can stay in its many rooms to take part in the daily schedules of yoga, meditation, kirtan, lectures and enjoy Ayurvedic treatments. At sunset, everything comes to a halt as everyone is treated to a world-renowned Ganga Aarti. Aarti means to remove darkness, usually with a flame or light. After songs in praise of a deity, devotees cup their downturned hands over the flame and raise their palms to their forehead as a blessing. The flame is waved around clockwise around a centre, suggesting how one lives with the universe or God at the centre of all activities. It was an honour to be right in front, on the river bank, dipping my feet in the holy river and even participating in the Aarti as the priests chanted. The ceremony is open to all, regardless of race, ethnicity, nationality and religion, to gather on the banks soaking in the magical atmosphere as the skies dim. After the Aarti, the spiritual head and President of the Ashram, Pujya Swami Chidanand Saraswatiji Maharaja and Sadvhi Bhagawati Saraswatiji engage in an open dialogue again open to all who seek any guidance.

INDIA

KERALA Kerala, which means Land of Coconut Trees, is believed to have been built by God itself with 44 rivers, backwaters and 600km of coastline along with forests covering a third of the land. Its name already hints at its beauty and peacefulness, making it a great vacation destination. It is said that in Keralan cuisine and life, the humble coconut features so much that without it, they would not know how to live. Trivandrum, Kerala is home to a beautiful ashram which is part of the famed Sivananda lineage, the Sivananda Vedanta Dhanwantari Ashram. There are 3 Sivananda ashrams in India – in the Himalayas, Kerala and Madurai. Ashram refers to home of a guru or saint. While physical postures or asanas are what yoga is commonly known for, in the yoga sutras of Patanjali, they are only 1 part of an 8 limbed path that guides a yogi’s life. This stems from the belief that only in a healthy body does a healthy mind live. In asanas, one uses the body as an instrument to eventually connect with the higher self and universe. For visitors, it is advisable to visit the ashram from June to March, avoiding the sweltering summer months of April and May. For those interested in Ayurvedic treatments, it is best to go during the monsoon season of June to August when it is cooler as many techniques incorporate steaming. It was at this time that I learnt from the guides who accompanied us that the many gods in Hinduism merely represented pieces of the whole puzzle, each showcasing different facets of the universal truth. It is said that humans created these stories in order to help them grasp the vast concept of the One. My personal favourite is the story of Ganesha, the popular elephant God with an elephant face and a human body, the God of Beginnings and Remover of Obstacles. His big elephant ears and long nose remind us that one should learn to listen and breathe through life’s challenges. His small eyes signify concentration. His four hands hold on to objects like the axe which notes that in life, problems may come from attachment and there is a need for balance. In another hand he holds a rope, by which farmers used to control a cow, indicating how we should be able to control ourselves and our five senses from harm. Next, he holds a tusk, used to write, inspiring the attitude of

constantly learning. Finally, he holds a sweet to remind us that life is still beautiful. And to top it off, he rides a tiny mouse as his vehicle of choice, to illustrate how contradictions can always exist. All in all, India has been both nourishing and yet entirely educational, opening one’s eyes to so many extremes, contradictions which exist next to surreal idealism. It is certainly a place which lends itself to multiple trips, revealing new glimpses into India with each visit.

EPICUREAN ESCAPE

Feasting in Fés

It is said that in order for a nation to develop a great cuisine, it must have four prerequisites: a rich land from which to draw upon an abundant range of ingredients; a variety of foreign cultural influences; a great civilization; and lastly, a refined palace with royal kitchens to inspire the nation’s cooks. Morocco has it all, and is home to some of the most tantalizing food imaginable. From robust roasts to rich aromatic stews, spiced or sweetened salads to savoury pastries and fragrant mounds of couscous, there is such a wide variety to choose from. One great example of the country’s cuisine is bastilla, an exquisite blend of shredded pigeon and spiced onion sauce with saffron and herbs encased in a flaky, filolike pastry, topped with cinnamon and sugar – an intricate dish that epitomises everything that is grand and extravagant in Moroccan cooking.

A gastronomic journey at once humble and regal

71

ONE OF THE MOST INTERESTING WAYS to absorb the delights and diversity of the country’s cuisine is to visit the souks (markets) and where better than Fés, often regarded as Morocco’s culinary capital. To wander through the myriad of laneways that make up the medina of Fés el Bali (old Fés) sampling the food on offer, is to take a gastronomic journey through Morocco itself. Early morning is a wonderful time to be out and about and I set off to get thoroughly lost. Sunlight streams in slanted rays through the woven bamboo shades covering the narrow alleyways, catching the steam rising from the many cookers. Street vendors are preparing for the day’s trade and already the air is awash with all manner of exotic aromas, the hustle and bustle as stalls are set up and neighbours greet one another. Great crusty rounds of warm khboz (bread) are on display at the feet of an old man crouching behind his produce. Munching on this doughy aniseed-flavoured bread is perfect for strolling the medina. In most Moroccan homes bread is prepared every morning, kneaded in unglazed red clay pans and sent to the community bakery on the heads of children on their way to school. Close to the city gate of Bab Bou Jaloud one stallholder is already busy at trade cooking and selling one the most common forms of Moroccan breakfasts, miklee. With

deft handwork he pinches small balls of dough and presses them into a paper-thin squares covered with oil. Folded, then folded again he slips them onto a skillet sizzling with oil where they materialise into flaky pancakes and are served to eagerly waiting customers with butter and honey. In a fruit and vegetable souk, produce of every kind lines the street. There are juicy oranges, lemons and grapefruits from the sun-drenched groves of Agadir, golden melons, vine-ripened tomatoes, clementines, crisp celery and plump mounds of grapes, preserved fruits and nuts. Entire shops are jam-packed with nothing but olives - of every flavour, size, quality and colour or bunch of 72

fresh mint displayed in baskets and hanging from ceilings. I head down into the dark underworld of the souks, through alleys so narrow that the only way the shopkeepers can get their stock in, is on a donkey’s back. The medina’s 9400 lanes and streets seethe with a human tide of endlessly streaming humanity, crammed with shops, restaurants, mosques, rug stores and even tanneries. Somewhere near the Attarine quarter I stumble upon a spice souk. The smell, colour and range of the spices are striking. There’s the bright reds of paprika and cayenne peppers alongside the rich yellow turmeric, soft-hued ginger, dusty sticks of cinnamon all contrasting in texture with seeds of cumin, sesame, aniseed, caraway, coriander and many more. All are heaped in tubs waiting to be measured into twisted envelopes of paper. These are some of the spices that form the soul of Moroccan cooking, transforming simple dishes to exotic heights. This Moroccan love of spices is a tradition handed down for thousands of years from their ancestors, who brought them in caravans across North Africa from Arabia and beyond. They brought with them the sophisticated knowledge of their uses as perfumes and medicines, as an enhancement of food and as currency for trade. In one dusty spice shop jars of ras-elhanut (which translates as ‘shopkeepers

choice’) line the top shelf. Consisting of anything up to a hundred different spices, no two mixtures are the same and only the maker knows the quantity of the various ingredients. When I ask the shopkeeper what the contents of his mixture are, he throws his hands up dramatically and exclaims, “This is the finest ras-el-hanut in all of Fés, and the ingredients are secret.” A seductive aroma wafting from a nearby food stall reminds me that I have a lunch date. Moroccan hospitality is famous and an invitation to dine with a family is never to be turned down. Any local cook will tell you that the best Moroccan cuisine is eaten at home, lovingly prepared by the lady of the house. “Welcome my friend, come, my home is your home!” says my host Taleb drawing me into his home. I follow him down a labyrinth of passageways and up a flight of stairs and into a spacious salon. The walls are decked out with intricate woodwork, colourful zellij tiles and graceful archways. Berber carpets and rugs cover the floor. Mint tea is traditionally served before and after a meal. Today is no exception. The tall silver teapot packed with fresh mint leaves, tea and sugar appears on a four-

legged silver tray called a siniyya. After the tea has brewed for some minutes, Taleb makes a ceremony of pouring the fragrant golden liquid from a great height into small decorative glasses. Taleb’s wife Nahmiah and his two daughters serve the first course of lunch; a sumptuous salad of oranges, cantaloupes, carrots, Dijon mustard and balsamic vinegar. The unlikely marriage of these ingredients is simply delightful. When there’s a guest in a Moroccan home, the women might not always eat with the family, but allowances are made when female visitors arrive for lunch and Nahmiah joins us. Next comes the tajine, one of Morocco’s most famous dishes. The name refers to the conical-lidded pot in which it is prepared, as well as the intricately spiced stew of meat and vegetables, sometimes with dried fruits and nuts, cooked very slowly over a charcoal fire. Typical tajine combinations include: lamb with raisins and almonds; beef with prunes and apples and lamb with dates. Today it’s a Moroccan classic; chicken tajine with green olives and preserved lemons - a simple yet delicious dish that is accompanied by thick wedges of crusty 74

Moroccan flat bread, perfect for soaking up the sauce. The arrival of a large platter topped with a mountainous mound of steaming couscous replete with pumpkin, raisins, and almonds and topped with fresh coriander has me loosening my belt. The basic premise behind Moroccan hospitality is that no guest shall go home hungry and Nahmiah is making sure I leave her table on all fours. What many people do not realise, is that couscous is not traditionally considered a main course, rather it is the dish served at the end of the meal to achieve shabban (total satiation). After the meal we retire to the cushioned divans that line the walls to stretch our legs and partake of yet again, more mint tea. Sipping on the refreshing sweet liquid and nibbling on fruit, I now fully understand that wonderful word shabban, and why Morocco‘s cuisine is one of the world’s best.

been sweeping the world since the late 1990s. Coined the “Korean Wave” in mid-1999 to describe the burgeoning appetite for Korean cultural exports, this global phenomenon is a veritable capital of its own, an immensely powerful form of soft power that is subtly impacting global lifestyles. Having reached as far as Latin America, North Africa, and the Middle East, the Korean Wave is influencing everyone from avid K-pop fans to Hallyu drama-chasers, putting increasing spotlight on cosmetic surgery and the re-writing of fashion and beauty ideals, and proliferating the growing taste for everything Korean, from traditional garb to regional cuisine. On the cusp of everything cool and with the power to influence international trends, Seoul Fashion Week has increasingly become more scrutinised in the global fashion scene. Although previously rather insular in nature, and in fact often denying digital reporters and “bloggers” on scene for most of the shows, the event is slowly opening up to the international media, with ambitions to join the ranks of New York and Milan Fashion Weeks as global trend-setters. Particularly gaining traction are street style snaps that flood social media accounts during fashion weeks. Some Korean designers that are slowly but surely garnering more international attention include pushBUTTON by Park Seunggun, a hot favourite to look out for especially with its multiple collaborations with international and beauty brands such as Puma and Laneige. Steve J & Yoni P’s British street style-inspired pieces feature witty and exotic twists to delight even the most jaded of fashionistas – and it certainly helps that it has a strong supporting of A-list Korean Stars like Lee Hyori to help elevate the label to international cult status. Literally translated to mean “south gate”, Namdaemun Market is located on the main southern gate of the old city wall, and is Korea’s oldest traditional market, originating as early as the 14th century under the reign of King Taejong (1367 - 1422). Commonly referred to as the “even has kitchen sink market”, its mind-boggling plethora of small vendors offers up a cornucopia of clothing, fresh vegetables and flowers, household goods, and other assorted knick-knacks all in one massive congregation. Because Yongsan is home to the US Military Base, it is also one of the most culturally diverse areas in Seoul – it is home to the only mosque in Korea – with the retail scene featuring numerous shops selling electronics, antiques, and branded label bags.

DONGDAEMUN

INSA-DONG

Termed the mecca of domestic Korean fashion, the Dongdaemun area (located slightly northeast of the City Centre) consists of over 40 different commercial and traditional markets, each offering a wide variety of fashion and accessories at amazing wholesale prices. One of these is the famed Dongdaemun Market, the retail attraction that never sleeps; many stores and food vendors usually start operation around 9pm to cater to the night market crowd, and the famous Mukja Golmok food alley is essential to anyone looking for a taste of the latest trends in Korean cuisine. If you’re in the mood for a bit of alternative shopping, Yangnyeong Market is one of the most famous oriental medicine markets in the country, and is worth a quick jaunt for its curious curation of medicinal wares. Several large fashion complexes in Dongdaemun, like Doota and Migilore, are dedicated to Korean-made apparel, and together constitute a shopper’s paradise of shoes, toys, leather goods, pet products, and other lifestyle accessories. Doota even has a huge outdoor concert stage, and regularly hosts events such as fashion shows, concerts, modelling contests, and classical Korean music performances. The newest kid of the block is Dongdaemun Design Plaza, also called the DDP, a major urban landmark with its distinctively neo-futuristic façade of exhibition spaces, rooftop parks, and a housing of restored parts of the Seoul fortress.

Slightly south of the palace complex is the Bukchon area, which houses over 900 traditional Korean hanoks that have been converted into numerous galleries, craftsmen’s workshops, and guesthouses that offer an authentic “old school” Korean experience. Adjacent to Bukchon is Insa-dong, a labyrinthine network of side and back streets that fan out to form a large area specialising in antique wares and local artist boutiques. Widely recognised as the cultural and artistic heart of the city, Insa-dong is a shopper’s paradise of old books, historical furniture, and handmade traditional crafts. Ssamziegil is particularly wonderful to browse, its spiralshaped space filled with quirky stores hawking a variety of unique knick knacks, including handmade soaps and scents, traditional pottery and tea sets, cat-themed merchandise, and a multitude of exotic and charming terrariums to delight any green thumb. Peppered throughout the area are a wide selection of traditional Korean cafeterias and pushcarts offering local snacks and desserts; an outstanding favourite is hotteok, a sweet dessert pancake that is a comforting concoction of hot fried dough, honey, nuts, and cinnamon. There’s even an adorable stall near the entrance of Ssamziegil that sells a poop-shaped version! Insa-dong is also famed for the fact that most, if not all, of its shop signs are written in hangul (Korean script), even Starbucks, the most perpetuated of Western exports. 82

A retail wonderland awaits at the Yeoju Premium Outlets

OUTLET SHOPPING

For those looking to chase down the latest fashion trends (but also desire for them to come with supremely affordable price tags) the university towns of Hongdae and Sinchon are the perfect answers to your prayers. Hongdae, famed for being the centre of Seoul’s underground arts and indie scene, is a chic collection of independent label stores, street fashion, and graffiti culture, often dotted by impromptu street performances by local indie rock bands and performers. Many attribute this colourful street scene to nearby Hongik Univerisity, renowned nationwide for its art programs. In fact, the Hongdae Free Market is a weekend flea that is a popular ground for student artists to showcase their talents, with stalls offering a unique range of handmade crafts, art, and vintage items at a steal. The nearby area surrounding Ehwa Women’s University is famously known for its fashion street, catering to young women in their early 20s and offering an exciting crawl of shop-line streets peddling a good mix of designer and street wear. Recently erected Yes apM is easily accessible from the subway station and offers a one-stop shopping opportunity. Another popular option for visitors to the Ehwa Women’s University Fashion Street is to get their hair done – the huge concentration of salons keep prices competitive, with many impeccable options to try out new trends and hairstyles.

Just a short hour away from Seoul is Yeoju Premium Outlets, a shopaholic’s wonderland of luxury labels at 25-65% off retail price all year round. Housing 144 brands, including big names like Giorgio Armani, Bottega Veneta, Burberry, Dior, Fendi, Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, and Yves Saint Laurent, this retail village is a plethora of shoes, bags, accessories, and housewares ripe for the picking. Visit the outlet’s website (www. premiumoutlets.co.kr/yeoju) before heading down to snag some coupons for added discounts and special offers that you can excahange for at the outlet’s Information Centre.

TO FUEL THE SOUL I AM NOT A GLUTTON – I AM AN EXPLORER OF FOOD

IF THERE’S ONE THING TO KNOW ABOUT US ASIANS, it’s that we have a veritable obsession with food. Food, and the act of eating it, has had its significance in our culture since the days of emperors long past, and remains a vital part of our lives today – we are (notoriously) willing to travel far and wide, and spend inordinate amounts of time queuing for a sample of what we believe to be the best food in the world. It’s no wonder that cuisine is as much a crucial part of our travels as history, culture, and adventure. Here, we highlight a few food-themed itineraries that have caught our eye, whether it’s for their strong emphasis on eating local, their fusion of fashion and food, or their significance in uncovering a destination’s heritage. And everybody knows: calories don’t count when you’re on holiday.

SUSPENDED IN TIME

SIPPING ON THE FRUITS OF THE OLD WORLD Stepping into Venice is like entering a world frozen in time, a dreamscape where romance and mystery are still very much alive, and history and tradition are treasures to be revered. And if you’re an oenophile, there’s even more to look forward to! With Belmond Hotel Cipriani, visitors are invited to rediscover the Vineyards of Venice with a tour that will have you uncovering centuries-old estates, sipping on some of the rarest and purest blends in the world, and languishing in lush, sun-drenched vineyards – with wineglass in hand, of course. The Vineyards of Venice itinerary begins with the “Associazione La Laguna nel Bicchiere” (Lagoon in a Glass Association), where you will find the rediscovered vines of the San Michele in Isola monastery. After much work and patience, these old vines have been meticulously restored to their ancient splendour, yielding Dorana and Malvasia varietals that will eventually be hand-harvested and pressed by foot! Modern methods and chemicals are eschewed for a completely traditional process, exactly like how the peasants used to do it in eras past. The second stop on the Island of Sant’Erasmo is where the French family Thoulouze produces the wine Orto, a blend of three original ungrafted varietals: the Fermentino, Fiano di Avellino and Malvasia Istriana. Finally, pay pilgrimage to the Venissa estate on the Island of Mazzorbo, one of the last surviving examples of walled vineyards in the world. The entire farm stretches over two hectares, completely surrounded by medieval wall; a commemorative marble stone indicates that it was reconstructed in 1727, while a picturesque 14th century bell tower and an 11th century Roman Catholic basilica church, the Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo, stand testament to the ground’s ancient roots.

Sample the city’s sizzling flavours come nightfall

IMAGES: MELISSA CHUA, ISTOCKPHOTO

At the risk of invoking scenes from The Hangover Part III, Bangkok at night transforms into a labyrinthine night market filled with scents and sounds that seem to bubble endlessly from a cauldron of street hawkers, hole-in-the-wall cafes, and decadent sweet treats. Specifically, Chinatown is one of the best places to catch a glimpse of local life. Go Beyond’s Flavours of the Night Time Chinatown itinerary will see you weaving through the back alleys of the city to a hand-picked selection of small shophouses and eateries – one of whose reputation earned itself a cameo in the Ryan Gosling film Only God Forgives. Re-enact a scene from the movie as you tuck in to a place of muu grob, a dish of fried noodles and fatty pork, and wander down to the waterfront under cover of night with a few sticks of satay in hand. Take a jaunt down Yarowat Rode, where random eats abound, where you can graze on small plates of street food, savour sticks of spicy sausages, and chow down on some dim sum, before finishing off with some sweet Chinese desserts (with a Bangkok twist, of course). Open your eyes, ignite your imagination and excite your taste buds with the sweet, the salty, the sour and the spicy flavours of the region.

LIKE THE LOCALS DO

Customised itineraries for any agenda A tour company that markets tours to people who don’t like tours? Sounds like a paradox, but the people at Localing Tours do exactly that – they offer a fully customised itinerary based on your preferred agenda, with no cookie-cutter script and no fixed formula, and you get to choose the pace and the focus, whether it’s coffee, sport or fine art. The guides are all well-informed locals that aim to expose you to their city’s culture and customs, without making you feel like a tourist. For food and drink tours, they do a mean Melbourne nightlight and Yarra Valley winery tour. If you’re staying in town for an evening, make it a really special one as you hop between Melbourne’s coolest bars and nightspots. Have a drink with the manager, get behind the scenes and really see what makes these Melbourne stalwarts tick. Be sure to choose a part of town, rich in history and character; somewhere you know little about to make sure it’s a real treat, blend in with the locals, make new friends, and be assure that you won’t find anything like it with any other company. If stunning wineries and laid-back country charm are more your beat, Localing Tours will also introduce to some of the best cheese and chocolates in the country, without the tourist traps. With a bounty of breweries and wildlife parks among rolling hills, there’s plenty to enjoy, whether it’s an intimate getaway or a fun-filled adventure for the whole family.

ALILA SEMINYAK BALI, INDONESIA AN ELEGANT COASTAL BOUTIQUE RESORT THAT EXUDES LUXURY, SOPHISTICATION AND VIBRANCY LIKE NO OTHER PROFILE “Our goal is to send our guests home with spiritual and emotional memories, not just souvenirs,” shared Mark Edleson, President of Alila Hotels & Resorts group. The name Alila derived from Sanskrit, which translates into surprise and is perfect for each property has its own refreshing character and hospitality charm. Alila is also constantly setting new standards for getaways, with featured privacy, eco-friendly buildings and bespoke travel experiences. It might not be the newest kid on the block, but it is definitely a hot spot in town. Alila Seminyak is a contemporary beachfront resort with vertical gardens and an ancient temple at its heart, making it a truly distinctive feature and a sophisticated addition to Seminyak’s beachfront. Sensitive site planning helped preserve the local landowner’s family home and the ancient ancestral temple, which has stood for generations. The temple was integrated into the resort’s design, framed as a central focal point for the entire property, while providing hotel guests a unique glimpse into an authentic Balinese tradition. Designed by Singapore-based architecture firm URBNarc, the team maximises the resorts’ privileged location with the best ocean views at every opportunity while maintaining an atmosphere of privacy and individuality. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, Alila Seminyak is grounded in sustainability. Did we mention the additional bath amenities such as sunscreen, after-sun lotion and facial mist on top of the usual shampoo and soap? It was the perfect place to be if you enjoy cradling by the lull of the waves and the caress of the ocean breeze.

body-melting techniques such as lomi-lomi, acupressure, deep tissue muscle movement and gentle stretching – all of which were essential and perfect for a city dweller like me, who does not stretch on daily basis.

PROPERTY Alila Seminyak comprises 240 contemporary styled rooms and suites with a spectacular penthouse, all of which embraces modern style chic with composites of nature within the design elements. Usable spaces are also thoughtfully planned out for artisanal living and each room is furnished with sliding balconies and sun shading screens to fully embrace guests in the light and airiness of the outdoors. The lobby space was definitely one to remember. The open counters were a concept designed to maximise the use of natural cooling, shading and daylight to reduce energy usage. Once we set foot into the massive space, we were ushered to the plush sofa seats right in the middle of the lobby for a refreshing and fuss free check-in process, which includes some spa products (facial mist, body lotion) accompanied with a cold cup of tea and some local desserts. Though it might be a simple act, I find it very heartwarming to know that guests are treated right the moment they set foot into the establishment. Art décor is a huge deal for the resort and artefacts on display are handpicked works from local artiste and placed around the resort premise, subject to change seasonally. Akin to visiting a museum, you will be in for a treat each time you return. We were then escorted to our Ocean Suite, located within the main hub of the hotel and with easy access to the beach, and given a room tour before settling in. A bottle of fresh orange juice and a small platter of local delicacies might be the first thing to notice, after which, the incredibly bright yet inviting natural sunlight that lit the entire room (or suite in this case). What I really love was the fusion of nature and modern contemporary as seen in the furnishings within the room. The walls were made of dark wood sourced from local timbers and the design

Spa Alila might have just been operational in 2016, but it has already been included as “The ‘Must-Spa’ List to Experience in Bali 2016”. Personalised treatments from the heart, fresh local ingredients, highly skilled masseuse and a luxurious compound contribute to the success of Spa Alila, which promises nothing short of a sublime spa experience that will leave guests feeling rejuvenated and relaxed with a renewed sense of well-being. This opulent spa destination is located on the first floor of the main building, with entrance facing the ancient temple that was previously mentioned, in the heart of the resort. Before treatments, you are given the option of choosing your massage oils. These are made in-house and specially created to help soothe your body, mind and soul. I went for the relaxing massage blend which consists of soothing lavender, geranium and chamomile, mandarin, marjoram and patchouli essential oils, which help unravel stress, calm the emotions and enhance moods. After which, it was a tranquilising 90 minutes of Alila Signature Massage. Skilful hands and focused energy deliver

NEARBY Alila Experiences is an exclusive excursion for guests to explore Bali’s Southwest coast in a fully restored Vintage 1980 Volkswagen Kombi. From sun-soaked beaches on a Romantique Roadtrip to shopping adventures on the Sensational Retail Therapy to hip nightlife on the Twilight to Midnight experience, any journey is set to offer an unforgettable Balinese experience.

SUMMARY Seminyak is renowned for being Bali’s most fashionable beach, home to the island’s most luxurious resorts and host to a fine number of restaurants and boutiques. So the next time you visit, why not reside in the coolest kid in town? It is after all, eco-friendly and offers an indulgence of luscious lifestyle facilities with refined spaces for chilling out in style. We know we’ll return for more.

PHOTO JOURNAL

NEW ZEALAND IN BRIEF

Scenes from a sabbatical OVER MY POST GRADUATION SUMMER, before most young men my age would (or are supposed to) settle down into a life-long career and a solid ten-year financial plan, I decided to pack up my bags and spend three months working and backpacking through New Zealand. One of the months I spent woof-ing for a nice elderly couple who own a little farm growing hazelnuts, just an hour’s drive from Christchurch. I spent most of my days working and travelling around the country with them, experiencing what it truly feels like to be treated like family in a total stranger’s home. They taught me a very important life lession: that we are all born equal, and that it is every person’s equal right to be loved. To love a stranger unconditionally, not knowing or holding against them who they are or what they did, that is something that I will never forget. Ever. Unfortunately, what I only realised on hindsight was that summer in the Northern Hemisphere meant winter in the South. But beyond the constantly chilly hands, a close encounter with frostbite, and the tragic loss of a camera lens over a cliff, winter meant great opportunities for glacier hiking, comfortably uncrowded tourist spots, and spectacular sunrises. If I had to do it all over again, I would – but perhaps in the summer this time round.

Sunrise shots are relatively easier to capture during winter, when days are short and “the crack of dawn” doesn’t happen till around 730a.m. Trekking to the top of Mount Eden, Auckland’s highest natural point and one of the region’s 48 volcanic zones, is made less painful by the crisp, clean air and lower humidity.

94

PHOTO JOURNAL

Look familiar? That’s because these limestones form the background of the great battle scene in Prince Caspian, the second of Andrew Adamson’s big screen Narnia adaptations. Known as Flock Hill, these dramatic valleys and tortured rocks are about 90 minutes drive from Christchurch on the Arthur’s Pass Highway to Greymouth.

A pastel-coloured cotton candy cloud floats peacefully above the rippling waters of Lake Tekapo on the northern edge of the Mackenzie Basin. The lake’s waters are harnessed for electricity through the Tekapo Canal, and the local people still fish in it for trout and salmon.

95

PHOTO JOURNAL

Millie was the farm’s resident Russian rag doll. It took a while for her to warm up to me, but when she finally did, she would sneak in to my bed for a snuggle on colder nights.

Going glacier hiking was definitely a first for me – this was also where I dropped and broke a lens while climbing down. Nonetheless, Fox Glacier was one of the most spectacular experiences ever.

If you make it to the top of Mount Eden (I hiked a volcano for this), you’ll be rewarded with stunning panoramic views of the Auckland city below. That monumental structure sticking out of the skyline is the Auckland Sky Tower, an observation and telecommunications structure that also allows visitors to experience a SkyJump or SkyWalk – their names are explanation enough. 96

MEXICO CITY: DÍA DE MUERTOS

Death is part and parcel of life. And yet most of us fear this inevitable end to all living things. Not to the Mexicans, however. Día de Muertos, which means the Day of the Dead, is a three-day celebration about death. As macabre as the holiday sounds, Día de Muertos is festive and full of meaning for the people of Mexico. From 31 October to 2 November, families will visit the graves of the dearly departed and decorate the graves with candles, marigolds and chrysanthemums. Friends and family also exchange colourfully decorated sugar skulls to ward off the fear of death. The main events take place in the city; people dress up in costumes and paint their faces to look like skulls as they walk in a parade. To the Mexicans, Death is no longer foe but a friend.
