01

New South Wales: Grand Pacific Drive The magnificent Grand Pacific Drive is a spectacular journey that meanders through coastal rainforests, quaint seaside towns, and secluded beaches. Drive south out of Sydney and through the Royal National Park to begin the cliff-hugging Grand Pacific Drive. Stop to swim, surf or picnic at Stanwell Tops before driving over the dramatic 455-metre Sea Cliff Bridge into the scenic city of Wollongong. Get your adrenaline pumping with a bout of hang gliding, or jump out of a plane at 14,000 feet with amazing views over Wollongong. At Jervis Bay, find the world’s whitest sand at Hyams Beach, or join a Dolphin Watch Cruise to see wild dolphins at play. Stop at Ulladulla for fish and chips on the harbour and discover more about the local Aboriginals on the ‘One

04

Track For All’ along the northern headland. At Pebbly Beach, swim with resident kangaroos before taking in the rugged coastline of Murramarang National Park and the lakes and beaches of South Durras.

02

Tasmania: Exhilarating East Coast Tasmania’s East Coast is the place to discover pristine landscapes and clean green waters. Drive up the spectacular coast from Hobart to St Helens where you can stop at Orford for a walk along Shelley and Spring Beach. Wineglass Bay is the well-known must-see beach on the Freycinet Peninsula and the Freycinet National Park, and with good reason – it’s a perfect formation of coastal beauty. See it from the air with Freycinet Air, and sleep within the beautiful wilderness at luxury Saffire Freycinet. Be sure to sample some of the best local produce and Tasmanian wines at cafés and restaurants along the way; situated inland among the farms, the freshest produce from orchards, gardens and pastures await. The waters here also offer some of the best fishing experiences in Australia, so be sure to grab some fresh seafood at the ports of Traibunna, Bicheno and St. Helens.

03

Victoria: Great Southern Touring Route The Great Ocean Road is one of the world’s best known coastal drives and one of Australia’s most beloved icons. Hugging the coast of southern Victoria, it is home to some of the most stunning coastal landscapes in the country and the lush rainforests of Otway National Park. It will take a few days to cover the 250-kilometre drive from Torquay to Warrnambool, and the RACV Torquay Resort would make the perfect starting point. Then halfway along the drive, check into Chris’s Beacon Point at Apollo Bay and dine at the legendary Greek-cuisine restaurant there, enjoying the sparkling ocean and regional views from its mountain-side location. Marvel at the beautiful surfing beaches, rugged cliffs and towering rock stacks, including the spectacular Twelve Apostles. Venture further inland and discover a completely different world, with historic towns and charming cellar doors.

04

South Australia: Nature, Sea & Vines Trail Once you have explored the city of Adelaide, head for the Adelaide Hills where you can cuddle a koala, take in the view from Mt Lofty Summit, and enjoy a German style lunch in Hahndorf. Travel south to the Fleurieu Peninsula where you can visit the McLaren Vale wine region and have a chance to sample some of Australia’s finest food and wine. At the seaside town of Victor Harbor take the horse drawn tram to

5 Granite Island or take a jet boat ride to explore the coast. Continuing on from Victor Harbor, take a 45 minute ferry ride from Cape Jervis and you will arrive on Kangaroo Island, Australia’s third largest Island - seven times the size of Singapore. Take a guided beach tour to see Australian sea lions at Seal Bay, be amazed by Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch, and be sure to try sandboarding at Little Sahara. Kangaroo Island is home to some fantastic fresh produce including succulent seafood, honey from Ligurian bees, Marron at Andermel Marron Farm, and many more.

05

Northern Territory: Darwin to Katherine An action-packed 450-kilometre drive across the top of the Northern Territory will see you traversing a landscape that looks somewhere between tropical and sub-saharan. Stop by Litchfield National Park and bathe in its beautiful waterfalls; make camp at Wangi Falls, considered the most beautiful in the park. Take a scenic flight to see the Katherine region from the air, including Katherine Gorge, Leliyn (Edith Falls) and more. Coolibah Air is just one operator providing flights. Take a side trip to Territory Wildlife Park, 50 kilometres out of Darwin, to see an array of local wildlife up close. Further down the road, the town of Adelaide River is rich in World War II history and a great place to jump on a crocodile-sighting cruise.

06

Western Australia: South West Drive From Perth, head to Margaret River for famous wineries such as the region’s legendary pioneer, Cape Mentelle. Then drive south through massive karri forests to Cape Leeuwin and climb the lighthouse to see where the Indian and Southern Oceans meet. Stop at William Bay National Park, home to Greens Pool and Elephant Rocks before joining Naturaliste Charters to see the world’s biggest pod of orcas (when in season). A good six-hour drive along the coast will bring you to Cape Le Grande National Park, where kangaroos can be seen sunbathing, while a little further is Esperance, home to some of the whitest sand and bluest waters on the planet.

Autumn in Tasmania // TRAVEL //

Some 40% of Tasmania is protected as national parks and while most trees in the rainforest are evergreen, there are those that shed their leaves in autumn (March to May) to create the most amazing kaleidoscope of colours. Kaleidoscope of Colour

1

There are many great reasons to travel to Australia’s island state however autumn is a special time for those who love nature and photographing it. It’s called the ‘turning of the Fagus’ or when the leaves of the native Nothofagus trees change from green to yellow to orange and red. Other introduced trees join in the display to add additional hues to the palette of forest colours. Two of the best national parks to witness this all-natural display are Cradle Mountain and Mount Field, with one in Tasmania’s north and the other in the south. It’s recommended flying into Launceston and out of Hobart or vice versa. Fly-drive is the best way to discover Tasmania and, with ideal and relaxed driving conditions plus lots to see and sample on the road, Australia’s island state is a paradise just waiting to be discovered.

01

Hobart and Mount Field With just 200,000 residents (Tasmania’s population is only 500,000), Hobart is small enough to be personal but big enough to offer a sophisticated lifestyle. With ideal weather, the downtown docks and Battery Point beside the Derwent River is best explored on foot with Saturday’s Salamanca Market being the perfect time to enjoy some of the state’s delicious produce especially fruit. Pick up a rental car and head northwest from Hobart on well-signposted roads for Mount Field but you’ll soon be distracted by things to see and do. At Bridgewater, just out of suburban Hobart, decisions will have to be made – Tasmanian Devils at Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary or delicious cool temperate wines at Stefano Lubiana Wines? It’s

best to choose both options as the devils and other wildlife offer a great introduction to Australia’s unusual fauna. On the other hand, the biodynamic, boutique and hand-crafted wines like Riesling and Pinot Noir produced by Stefano Lubiana are rated among Australia’s finest. Plan to be here at lunchtime to enjoy some rustic Italian fare featuring locally-grown biodynamic produce. A designated non-drinking driver needs to be assigned when visiting vineyards. All this is great preparation for the amazing colours waiting at Mount Field National Park. While there are longer walks for the adventurous (winter snow on the top of Mount Dobson), most will be content to stay on the signposted walks along the forest-lined stream leading to the famous Russell Falls. The vegetation and colours are amazing and it’s not only the Fagus, the tree ferns are the world’s tallest. Retrace your tracks from the park and make a decision to head through the Central Highlands or the West Coast for Cradle Mountain National Park. This means stopping at Curringa Farm for the first route or Pumphouse Point in Lake St. Clair National Park for the West Coast route. You know you’re in good hands at either overnight stop as both just received national accolades at the Tourism Australia Awards. Make time to explore each place with Curringa Farm offering sheep shearing, rounding up and forest walks while at Pumphouse Point, forest walks, mountain biking, lake cruises, and the Wall in the Wilderness are essential activities. 3

//

Cradle Mountain and the North Cradle Mountain has many moods depending on the season and all appeal for different reasons. The autumn colours are dramatic against a backdrop of exposed rocky peaks etched by eons of glaciation and mirror-like lakes. The Enchanted Walk is perfect to experience the colours of the Fagus while circumnavigating Dove Lake is the quintessential activity. Part of this walk includes the track to the Boat Shed which everyone should attempt as it only takes 30 minutes and is very scenic. Real adventurers can also depart on the guided, six-day Overland Track through to Lake St. Clair National Park staying in comfortable wilderness accommodation each evening. There’s a range of excellent accommodation just outside park headquarters for those just visiting Cradle Mountain. After exploring the park, head west before turning north onto road B18 for Burnie and Tasmania’s northwest coast. Near-deserted beaches fronting onto Bass Strait are a feature as is the world’s cleanest air blowing off the water. Food lovers will enjoy exploring the many delights of the ‘Cradle to Coast Tasting Trail’ (www. cradletocoasttastingtrail.com.au) with treats ranging from Hellyers Road Distillery (single malt whisky), House of Anvers (chocolate), Spreyton Cider, Ashgrove Tasmania Farm Cheese, Christmas Hills

There are many great reasons to travel to Australia’s island state however autumn is a special time for those who love nature and photographing it. //

Raspberry Farm, 41˚ South (salmon and ginseng) and Melita Honey Farm (leatherwood honey), just to name a few producers. Laden down with goodies, head to Launceston to explore Tasmania’s second largest city. While some may just stay overnight here, Launceston is a great base to explore the Tamar Valley home to award-winning, cool climate wineries, orchards, berry producers, and a range of activities from zip-lining through the forest to Bridestowe Lavender Estate just northeast of the city. For those who don’t want to travel far, dine in restaurants in and around the city, such as Stillwater and the exciting new Geronimo Aperitivo Bar and Restaurant in the city or the restaurant at Josef Chromy Wines at nearby Relbia. Before flying out of Launceston stop by the Tasmanian Gourmet Sauce Company and the Tasmanian Honey Company near the airport or the Evandale Sunday Market should your departure coincide with this lively local market.

Discover what Gold Coast has to offer beyond its iconic theme parks and sunny shores Already world-famous for its theme parks of Warner Bros. Movie World, Dreamworld, and SeaWorld (which recently opened its newest attraction Creatures of the Deep in June 2015), Gold Coast offers so much more in terms of adventure and attractions, including great shopping, nature and a relaxed beach lifestyle. Here are some ways for you to uncover another side to this glittering city.

Dining with a view Already known for its stunning beaches and vast ocean views, visitors now have the opportunity to dine right on the beach in quintessential Gold Coast style at some of the city’s best surf lifesaving clubs. One of the most

Café Surfing Another type of surfing you can do is to go café surfing; Gold Coast has a burgeoning coffee scene that is fast gaining popularity amongst locals and foreigners alike. Start your own café trail by simply hopping on the tram service ‘G:Link’ from Surfers Paradise (Black Coffee Lyrics) to Broadbeach (Elk Espresso) for the best of Gold Coast.

Escape to the Hinterland It may surprise you to find out that just a short 30-minute drive inland from the coast will deliver an entirely different landscape. Mt Tamborine in the Gold Coast hinterland is a world of lush greenery with stunning scenic lookouts, a true hidden gem. Book a day trip with Southern Cross 4WD Tours for a comprehensive experience of Mount Tamborine – hike through the forest to uncover pristine waterfalls and local wildlife. For lunch, be sure to treat yourself to an authentic Aussie BBQ.

Top of the World

popular is Currumbin Surf Club located in Currumbin, which boasts some of the best views while serving great bistro favourites and contemporary Australian cuisine. Many of these clubs also offer surfing and sea-related activities, so you can work up an appetite before your meal.

Conquer one of Gold Coast’s tallest building with the bucket list-worthy SkyPoint Climb – at a staggering 270 metres above sea level, a climb to the peak will offer breathtaking views of the city’s coast and skyline. Children and the elderly can enjoy the view within the sanctuary of the observatory deck, which offers panoramic views of crashing waves, the city’s varied architecture, and the beautiful riverside residences. The best time to visit is in the evening to catch the spectacular sunset!

09

Retail therapy Whether it’s big malls or indie markets, Gold Coast has it all. Pacific Fair, located in Broadbeach, is expected to complete its redevelopment by mid2016 to reveal a brand new façade housing luxury and high-end street fashion, unrivalled dining and bar experiences, and world-class indoor and outdoor entertainment. This leisure megamall will boast over 400 specialty stores framed by tropical landscapes and soothing water features. For bargain hunters, Harbour Town Outlet Shopping offers prices at up to 60-percent off regular retail on a huge variety of local and international brands. Or head over to Surfers Paradise Beachfront Market, opened every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday night 3pm-8pm. Over 100 market stalls hawk fashion, jewellery, art works, beauty products, and homewares. For something a little off the beaten tourist track, hang out with the locals at the newly opened NightQuarter Market. Open every Friday and Saturday night from 4pm–10pm, NightQuarter features over 120 speciality food purveyors, designers, musicians and craftspeople within a shipping container city.

Blossoming in love with Korea’s Spring // TRAVEL //

Spring fills the air with the fragrance of fresh blooms and budding romance

From March to May, the beautiful land of Korea comes alive with a plethora of flower festivals celebrating the beauty of Spring. Enjoy the crisp, refreshing air as you stroll along the scenic route of Dalmaji-gil in Busan. This seaside trail that runs from Haeundae to Songjeong is also knows as the city’s Street of Culture, due to its collection of art galleries and unique cafes. Couples looking for a romantic picture opportunity can take a stroll down nearby Moontan Road. Venture about 40-minutes’ drive out of Busan and you will reach the spectacular town of Jinhae, one of the most popular places for viewing cherry blossoms. Locals and tourists alike flock to Jinhae for its Cherry Blossom Festival, when the charming town comes alive with parade and floral displays from late March to early April. With a location set along the mountainous stretch of the southern Korean coastline, Jinhae’s blooms attract over two million visitors annually. North of Busan is historic Gyeongju, home to one of the most beautiful landscapes in the country. Bomun Lake, slightly east of downtown Gyeongju, is another popular cherry blossom spot, but the area offers so much more than just beautiful scenery – the Bomun Lake Resort and Bomun Tourist Town have facilities such as a golf resort, shopping malls, and many other leisure and amusement activities to keep you entertained. The colours of Daegu in full bloom are truly a sight to behold. E-World (a European-style theme park), Suseong Lake and Palgongsan Mountain come alight with blossoming cherry trees. In Gangwon, which is already well known for its beautiful Nami

While taking in the surrounding scenery, enjoy artworks on display and try a hands-on experience making your own spring-themed crafts. While usually known for its amazing food and beverage establishments, Macao is also home to historic architecture, a wide variety of museums, and a vibrant arts scene. Put on your walking shoes to explore the best of this culturally varied destination.

The Mediterranean of the East

At the crossroads of Chinese and Portuguese culture, Macao is rich in historical and architectural attractions – with most of the Macao Peninsula designated a UNESCO World Heritage site, there is a plethora of old streets and historic alleys to traverse and discover. One of the most iconic is Senado Square and its adjacent Leal Senado Building, both known for their pastel-coloured neo-classical buildings that create an almost Mediterranean atmosphere. This venue is popularly used for public events and celebrations, and on the weekends, it is common to see balloon twisting and magic shows. Macao’s historic centre also encompasses the Heritage Exhibition of a Traditional Pawn Shop Business, which has been preserved to showcase the old days of trading and business in the area, and the Carpentry Guildhall, the oldest labour union that was established in Macao during the Qing Dynasty. For a glimpse into the history of the island, take a stroll down Rua de Camilio Pessanha and its adjacent streets, Rua da Caldeira and Rua da Felicidade (Happiness Street). Originally built as typhoon shelters, the entire area is currently home to some of the more unique local handicrafts and cuisines in the city. Interestingly, Happiness Street was named after the fact that it was once the city’s red light and opium district, but today it dishes out a different kind of euphoria in the form of tantalising delicacies and traditional street food.

18

Come all ye faithful

One of the most fascinating things about Macao is its multi-cultural, multi-religious, and multi-ethnic identity. Within close proximity of each other, you will find monuments and religious buildings paying homage to the Catholic, Protestant, and Buddhist faiths. The Ruins of St. Paul’s is one of Macao’s signature sights and an oft-snapped tourist icon, while slightly north of Senado Square is the beautiful 17th century St. Dominic’s Church. On the right side of the latter is a three-story bell tower that houses the Treasure of Sacred Art, a collection of roughly 300 historical relics. The church is also the venue of choice for the annual Procession of Our Lady of Fátima, held 13 May every year. Just down the road from St. Dominic’s Church is Sam Kai Vui Kun (Kuan Tai Temple), dedicated to Kuan Tai (the Saint of War and Righteousness) and Cai Bo Xing Jun (the God of Wealth). Perched on the edge of the Chinese Bazaar area, this was the temple of choice for the historical Chinese trading and business associations, and served as a precursor to the city’s Chinese Chamber of Commerce. On weekends, you can catch a glimpse of the Drunken Dragon Dance or traditional Chinese martial arts performances in the Friendship Square nearby. Other noteworthy religious landmarks are St. Lawrence’s Church, one of the three oldest churches in Macao sporting a neo-classical structure with Baroque decorative influences, and the A-Ma Temple, dedicated to Mazu, the Goddess of seafarers and fishermen.

Macao’s modern marvels

While Macao has a plethora of heritage attractions, there are also more modern attractions available to pique your imagination. Further along the eastern coast of Macao Peninsula is the Macao Fisherman’s Wharf, where you will find a slew of elegant and classical European complexes built along the pier. While marvelling at the massive Roman Amphitheatre, a replica of Rome’s Colosseum, take the time to enjoy some of the area’s theme parks and shopping options at Legend Boulevard, where you can find scenes out of Miami, Amsterdam, and the Italian Riviera, amongst many others.

Nostalgia in Taipa and Coloane

While most of the city’s attractions lie within the Macao Peninsula, Taipa and Coloane within the Cotai reclaimed land area also offer quaint villages for a glimpse into historical Macao. Still inhabited by a handful of fishermen, the villages of Taipa and Coloane boast colonial-era shophouses and authentic tradition. European influences abound on the grounds of the Taipa-Houses Museum and Our Lady of Camo Church. Both architectural relics sporting the distinctive pastel palette of neo-classical Portuguese architecture, these landmarks have survived the large-scale urban development that has taken over most of the Cotai strip in recent years. The TaipaHouses Museum in particular features some of the most beautiful grounds on the island. On weekends, cultural performances fill the streets of Taipa, with Lion Dances along Largos dos Bombeiros on

Wise sayings often warn against things that are built on sand which liken its nature to that of something that is not firmly established or likely to fail. But despite its fleeting nature in building, sand sculptors and enthusiasts continue to flock to the Fulong Sand Sculpting Art Festival. Held since 2008 to promote sand sculpting in Taiwan, the 2 month long festival held from May to July has seen massive growth in the number of visitors each year. Combining the different aspects of sculpting, culture, painting, architecture, and recreation into one, the activity seems to have become a major tourist attraction due to its unique impact, authenticity and participatory nature. The annual event has formed a creative space for Taiwanese sand sculpting to sprout and develop. Each passing year, the event gives birth to wave after wave of critically acclaimed successful sand sculptors which continue to attract tourists from both Taiwan and internationally. While there are many scenic beaches in Taiwan, the one that is especially acclaimed for sand sculpting lies on the northeastern coast of Yanliao to Fulong. Here the continuous 3 kilometer stretch of golden beach contains mineral-like quartz sand which is soft, white, and easily clumps together. This makes it ideal for sand sculpting. The coastline was named the best beach in Taiwan for sand sculpturing by the World Sand Sculpting Association. Last year, the theme of the event was “the United Nations of Toys which featured depictions of teddy bears, remote control cars, and Taiwanese puppet shows. Interested individuals are encouraged to visit www.eventaiwan.tw for more information on the festival. This year, the Fulong Sand Sculpting art Festival is expected to be held from 7 May to 10 July.

Come this spring of 2016, Taiwanese music enthusiasts will rejoice at the highly anticipated and celebrated annual event of the Spring Wave Music & Art Festival. Entering its 11th year, this annual event will be held at Dajia Riverside Park in Taipei and would see one of the largest gatherings of top stars and bands from Taiwan and China. The event is said to attract more than 10,000 people each year. The event will also see up-and-coming indie bands battle it out at the Third Global Spring Wave Music Awards. A total of top 15 finalists would be selected from all of Taiwan. The champion and runner-up of the competition will be given the opportunity to be on stage with all the top stars and the champion would see the grand prize of NT$ 60,000 (RM7,549). Among the artists who will be attending the event are Sitar Tan, Leah Dou, Ayal Komod and also Luantan Ascent. The event will be held on 3 to 4 April. Honeymoon in Bali & Lombok

Long famed for its feature in the motion picture, Eat, Pray, Love, the isle of Bali needs no further introduction in terms of its eminence. Those who wish to travel the familiar and well-travelled paths of Ubud that feature in the movie should tour the picturesque terrace rice fields, wide reaching crater lakes and adventurous misty treks. Handmade and exquisitely crafted, visitors can find numerous pottery creations, which include teapots, vases, candle holders and plates. These pottery creations make great souvenirs

Known as the cultural centre of Indonesia, Jogjakarta is filled with artisanal pursuits, such as classical Javanese art, batik and even puppet shows. Once the capital of the Mataram Sultanante in the 17th Century, Jogjakarta draws its name from the classic Ramayana epic after the city Ayodhya, which means “fit, suitable and proper”. The city is a regular stop for those travelling to Borobodur, the Buddhist temple that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The temple was constructed during the 9th Century during the reign of the Sailendra Dynasty, which blended Buddhism with Indonesian beliefs of ancestral worship. A visit to Jogja is never complete without experiencing Malioboro Street. Rows of shops and outlets sell many kinds of souvenirs you can take back home. If you want to test your negotiation skills, you can try The Haggling Game with the street vendors. All is fair in love and shopping. Many say that a single visit to Jogja is never enough.

SUOMENLINNA

Just a 15-minute ferry ride from Kauppatori, the ‘Fortress of Finland’, is set on a cluster of four islands linked by bridges. This World Heritage site was built by the Swedes in the 1740s, taken over by the Russians in 1808, and now has a walking path connecting the main attractions. Don’t miss the Suomenlinna Museum covering the history of the fortress (suomenlinna.fi; ferry from US$6 return; fortress grounds open daily, free entry; main museum open daily, US$7.50).

CANDLELIT CHURCH

Back in town, head over to the Uspenski Cathedral on the island of Katajanokka. Built in 1868 as a Russian Orthodox church, this eye-catching red-brick building has classic onion domes and now serves the Finnish Orthodox congregation. Saturday evening and Sunday morning services are worth attending for the fabulous chorals and candlelit ambience (hos.fi/uspenskin-katedraali; Kanavakatu 1; tourist visits 9.30am–4pm Tue–Fri, 10am– 3pm Sat, noon–3pm Sun; free).

For the last day of the weekend there is no experience more classically Finnish than this – a scrub-down and a massage at a traditional public wood-fired Activities Shopping Drinking Sights Eating Sleeping sauna. There are separate saunas for men and women; bring your own towel along or rent one for US$3.70 (kotiharjunsauna.fi; Harjutorinkatu 1; 2pm–8pm Tue– Kotiharjun Sauna is in the Kallio Sun, sauna until 9.30pm; sauna district and dates from 1928 entry US$13.50).

SHOPPING

Helsinki is renowned for its design, and is ideal for grabbing a souvenir. There are design shops, studios and lleries to explore in and around the Punavuori area – see Design District Helsinki (designdistrict. fi) for a map, or get one from the tourist office. Shops worth visiting include Aarikka for wooden jewellery; Stockmann, a department store with a good line in handicrafts; and homewares store Artek.

There is no better time to visit Myanmar than now. After years of unsettling conflicts, the Southeast Asian country is now ready to welcome travellers who have been intrigued by Rudyard Kipling’s Mandalay. In its isolation, Myanmar has managed to keep American commercialisation out — KFC became the first American fast food restaurant to open in Myanmar in June 2015 — and instead, retained a stronghold on culture and tradition in this Land of Golden Pagodas. Embark on a voyage along Myanmar’s famed Ayeyarwady River that actually begins at the

In the Buddhist nation, it isn’t uncommon to see hundreds of gilded temples and stupas along the banks. Make the journey from Mandalay to Bagan onboard The Strand Cruise. Initiated by famed The Strand Hotel in Yangon, The Strand Cruise will bring sojourners on a four- or three-night sail while stopping at ports of rich heritage and cultural significance. At its homeport in Mandalay, explore the bustling capital and its gilded temples, and then make your way

to the next port of call at Ava. A former capital, Ava was abandoned in 1839 after an earthquake. Its final stop is at Bagan, the cultural and economic capital of Myanmar

MAKE IT HAPPEN The Strand Cruise will embark on its first voyage in early January 2016. Trips are three or four nights long and begin at Mandalay or Bagan respectively. Prices start at US$1,782 per pax for double occupancy in the Deluxe Cabin (thestrandcruise.com). It is easier to begin the cruise in Mandalay. Silkair flies from

AirAsia flies the same route from Kuala Lumpur. After disembarking in Bagan, opt for an overnight train to return to Yangon, the current capital, for a stay in newly refurbished The Strand Hotel (from US$382 per night; hotelthestrand.com).

To observe aboriginal customs, come for the Blessing & Smoking Ceremony that will commence on 22 January. There is also an Opening Ceremony and Closing Ceremony that will celebrate the coming together of many tribes from around Australia and the Torres Strait.

MAKE IT HAPPEN The Rainbow Serpent Festival will be held from 22 to 25 January 2016. Book festival tickets (from US$250), Charter Bus reservations (US$30 for return tickets), and rent teepees, gers or yurts for accommodation, all at rainbowserpent.net. Start in Kauppatori market. Just west of here is a fountain with the nude female statue of Havis Amanda that’s a city symbol, while to the northeast, the Presidential Palace is guarded by uniformed sentries. North of Kauppatori is Senaatintori (Senate Square) with its stately Tuomiokirkko (Lutheran Cathedral). Turn back to the market, then stroll west along Esplanadin Puisto (Esplanade Park), with its design shops and upmarket cafés. Turn right onto Mannerheimintie – a boulevard that leads northwest past the grand 1931 Parliament House, the new Musikkitalo studio and Alvar Aalto’s Finlandia Talo concert hall, to the 1952 Olympic Stadium, with great city views from the top of its tower (pictured).

Rainbow Serpent Festival — Lexton, Australia The sleepy town of Lexton in Victoria, is a place most travellers, and even local Australians, overlook. Situated north of the more cosmopolitan state capital, Melbourne, Lexton, which at its last census in 2006 only contained a population of 149, transforms into one of the biggest music, arts and lifestyle festival every summer. Originally just for music, the four-day Rainbow Serpent Festival has since grown to include art and lifestyle. Considered the ‘Burning Man’ of the southern hemisphere, the 18th run of the Rainbow Serpent Festival will include more than 140 acts spread across five stages, including Be Svendsen from Germany, Interpulse from Australia, and John Digweed. Interspersed around the festival’s grounds are also art installations from around the globe; the spiritually themed Michael Divine’s Ten Thousand Visions will strike awe and leave visitors in a contemplative mood. The Rainbow Serpent Festival is held on the shared Country of the Dja Dja Wurrung and Wadawurrung people’s boundary. To pay

COFFEE AND A STROLL

Finns are the world’s biggest coffee drinkers, so start with a caffeine shot plus a cardamom pulla (pastry) at a local café or at the harbourside Kauppatori (market square; most stalls open 8am–4pm Mon–Sat). Flanked by stately 19th-century buildings, the square has a stone obelisk from 1835 topped by a golden eagle, marking the visit of Tsar Nicholas I and Tsarina Alexandra. Partake in Asia’s largest float parade at Chingay, Singapore

Chingay Parade — Singapore While Lunar New Year is mainly celebrated by the Chinese in Singapore, it has not stopped the other ethnic groups from coming together to join in the festivities during the nation’s and Asia’s largest street performance and float parade. Chingay, which means “the art of costume and masquerade” in Hokkien, is an extravaganza that epitomises the dynamism of Singapore’s multicultural society. The parade was first introduced in 1973 by then-Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew as a compensation for the ban of firecrackers. The first parade showed various aspects of Chinese culture, such as with martial arts, dragon and lion dances and Chinese opera but this has since grown to include performances by the Malays, Indians, and Eurasians, and even sees participants from all over the world. As 2016 marks the first year of Singapore’s next 50 years of independence, Chingay 2016 will be themed “Lights of Legacy, Brighter Singapore” and will have an exhilarating display of illuminated floats, aerial acts, and even a spectacular fireworks display for its grand finale. The main parade will take place at the F1 Pit Building that is situated next to the Singapore Flyer. The large, observation Ferris wheel is Singapore’s answer to the London

Eye and provides alluring vistas of the metropolis’ skyline. For a private viewing experience of the Chingay parade, couples can choose to book a four-course dinner menu with butler with the Flyer’s Premium Sky Dining service (from US$225 per couple; singaporeflyer.com).

MAKE IT HAPPEN There will be two parades for Chingay 2016. The first show will be on 19 February and the second on 20 February 2016. Information about Chingay 2016 can be found at chingay.org.sg and tickets can be purchased on sistic.com.sg. Fly in on Singapore Airlines that is available in 63 international destinations in 35 countries and on six continents (singaporeair.com). The central location of the F1 Pit Building, where Chingay is held, is easily accessible through the city-state’s comprehensive public transport system. Stay at one of Singapore’s newest hotels, The South Beach, designed by Philippe Starck, which is just three minutes from the event’s venue (from US$335 per night; thesouthbeach.com.sg).
