HOTEL EMMA Texas, United States WHAT WAS THIS BUILDING IN A PREVIOUS LIFE? The original Pearl brew house was built here in 1894 and it was a very successful business in the 19th century because of Emma. Hotel Emma was then named in honor of Emma Koehler, the wife of Pearl Brewery founder, Otto Koehler, who kept the business running even in the toughest period. WILL I BE CONVERTED? Designed by award-winning firm Roman and Williams, renowned for their interplay with historic and modern elements. Latin influence with European culture and usage of original materials from the brewery can be seen throughout the interior designs. The juxtaposition of old, new, industrial and refined evokes a romantic feeling throughout. RATE: USD350++ www.thehotelemma.com

Singapore WHAT WAS THIS BUILDING IN A PREVIOUS LIFE? Little India is an old settlement where Indian immigrants once reared cattle and livestock. In the exact location, lies the history of Hong Wen School, which dates back to the 1920s. The façade remains untouched, with its old-world charm and nostalgic beauty. WILL I BE CONVERTED? None of the 29 rooms are identical. Once you step into the hotel, the contemporarily designed ‘Industrial Glam’ lobby juxtaposes well with the image of Little India. Guests can also choose to stay in a single colour‘capsule-like’ room, or play it up a notch and opt for the playful loft rooms such as Space, Tree or Typewriter.

1 There is no better time to visit Myanmar than now. After years of unsettling conflicts, the Southeast Asian country is now ready to welcome travellers who have been intrigued by Rudyard Kipling’s Mandalay. In its isolation, Myanmar has managed to keep American commercialisation out — KFC became the first American fast food restaurant to open in Myanmar in June 2015 — and instead, retained a stronghold on culture and tradition in this Land of Golden Pagodas. Rainbow Serpent Festival — Lexton, Australia The sleepy town of Lexton in Victoria, is a place most travellers, and even local Australians, overlook. Situated north of the more cosmopolitan state capital, Melbourne, Lexton, which at its last census in 2006 only contained a population of 149, transforms into one of the biggest music, arts and lifestyle festival every summer. Originally just for music, the four-day Rainbow Serpent Festival has since grown to include art and lifestyle. Considered the ‘Burning Man’ of the southern hemisphere, the 18th run of the Rainbow Serpent Festival will include more than 140 acts spread across five stages, including Be Svendsen from Germany, Interpulse from Australia, and John Digweed. Interspersed around the festival’s grounds are also art installations from around the globe; the spiritually themed Michael Divine’s Ten Thousand Visions will strike awe and leave visitors in a contemplative mood. The Rainbow Serpent Festival is held on the shared Country of the Dja Dja Wurrung and Wadawurrung people’s boundary. To pay

Partake in Asia’s largest float parade at Chingay, Singapore
Chingay Parade — Singapore While Lunar New Year is mainly celebrated by the Chinese in Singapore, it has not stopped the other ethnic groups from coming together to join in the festivities during the nation’s and Asia’s largest street performance and float parade. Chingay, which means “the art of costume and masquerade” in Hokkien, is an extravaganza that epitomises the dynamism of Singapore’s multicultural society. The parade was first introduced in 1973 by then-Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew as a compensation for the ban of firecrackers. The first parade showed various aspects of Chinese culture, such as with martial arts, dragon and lion dances and Chinese opera but this has since grown to include performances by the Malays, Indians, and Eurasians, and even sees participants from all over the world. As 2016 marks the first year of Singapore’s next 50 years of independence, Chingay 2016 will be themed “Lights of Legacy, Brighter Singapore” and will have an exhilarating display of illuminated floats, aerial acts, and even a spectacular fireworks display for its grand finale. The main parade will take place at the F1 Pit Building that is situated next to the Singapore Flyer. The large, observation Ferris wheel is Singapore’s answer to the London
Eye and provides alluring vistas of the metropolis’ skyline. For a private viewing experience of the Chingay parade, couples can choose to book a four-course dinner menu with butler with the Flyer’s Premium Sky Dining service (from US$225 per couple; singaporeflyer.com).
MAKE IT HAPPEN There will be two parades for Chingay 2016. The first show will be on 19 February and the second on 20 February 2016. Information about Chingay 2016 can be found at chingay.org.sg and tickets can be purchased on sistic.com.sg. Fly in on Singapore Airlines that is available in 63 international destinations in 35 countries and on six continents (singaporeair.com). The central location of the F1 Pit Building, where Chingay is held, is easily accessible through the city-state’s comprehensive public transport system. Stay at one of Singapore’s newest hotels, The South Beach, designed by Philippe Starck, which is just three minutes from the event’s venue (from US$335 per night; thesouthbeach.com.sg).

Make sure to try Ayam Penyet, flattened deep fried chicken served with rice and spicy sambal – a favourite among locals and foreigners alike. From the harbour, opt to take a boat to neighbouring islands, Senggarang and Pulau Penyengat, home to various famous religious architectures. Trail of the Sea Gypsies, a newly added tour, brings visitors to venture into the hinterland of Bintan Island. Take this interesting trail of ever changing landscapes and coastlines and learn a new thing or two from the friendly locals. If you are lucky, you might even get a personal lesson on traditional boat making by the coastline, where most of the locals reside at. With so much to see and do, it is time to start packing for your next adventure to Bintan Island! For more infomation, please visit www.bintan-resorts.com

An Appetite for Hungary’s Budapest Although small, Hungary is one of the oldest European countries with a distinct culture and history and there’s no better place to soak it all in than at Budapest. The rich journey of heritage begins in the heart of the capital and largest city of the landlocked country. Start with a visit to the city’s most famous building, St Stephen’s Basilica, the largest church in the city. Technically a cathedral by architectural standards, the building was bestowed the title of ‘basilica minor’ by Pope Pius XI in 1931. It took 50 years of construction and features two different styles, neo-classical and neo-Renaissance. From the basilica, make your way to Vörösmarty Square, named after Hungarian poet Mihály Vörösmarty, whose statue stands in the middle of the square. Definitely check out the Gerbeaud Cafe that has been a tenant in the square since 1870. After a cup of coffee at Vörösmarty Square, move on to Vákert Bazár (Royal Garden Pavilion). The newly restored Vákert Bazár was built on the banks of the Danube, at the foot of the Castle Hill. The building complex, once considered an endangered monument, features an open arcade with pavilions, stairways, ramps and blocks of flats. Take a walk around the Castle District, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that contains the country’s most important medieval monuments and museums. Stop by the Royal Palace (Buda Castle), where admission is free, to visit the Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest History Museum and National Library. Other attractions within the Buda Castle are the Fisherman’s Bastion (Halászbástya) and Matthias Church (Mátyás Templom). Built in the 19th Century, the Fisherman’s Bastion serves as a lookout tower for bird’s eye panoramic views of Budapest. As for the Matthias Church, the Roman Catholic place of worship is steeped in history that dates back to Szent István (Saint Stephen), the first King of Hungary in 1015.
Discover more religious significance of Hungarian history with a brief walk around the Jewish Quarter, which is located in the city centre. Explore the largest synagogue in Europe at The Great Synagogue in Dohány Street that is still in use by the Jewish community. Pay respects at the Holocaust Memorial as well that has noted down the names of Hungarian Jews killed during the Holocaust. Other great places to visit in this area are the Gozsdu Courtyard, and Orthodox Synagogue on Kazinczy utica, which was built in Hungarian Art Nouveau style. Within walking distance is the Klauzál tar, the district’s largest square and home to the Klauzál Square Market Hall, one of the five large market halls in the city. Another square to visit is the Heroes’ Square (H sök tere), the largest in Budapest, which connects to Andárassy Avenue. The picturesque avenue is a beautiful place to walk down for its turn-of-the-century buildings, many of which are now boutiques for upscale international brands. Its most famous tenant, however, is the State Opera House that still continues to perform world-class operas each evening. At Heroes’ Square itself, the impressive space is surrounded by the Museum of Fine arts and Kunsthalle (Hall of Art). It is worth visiting this place twice — once in the day and once at night for a beautiful juxtaposition of sights. Budapest is just the beginning to a wonderful journey through Hungary. As a starting point, the city also connects to the town of Gödöll , and to the first Hungarian UNESCO heritage village of Hollók , and the baroque-style city of Eger. Tantalising Thailand Enter into the Land of Smiles

Thailand is no stranger to many. It is a country situated within Southeast Asia and is home to world renowned tropical beaches, opulent royal palaces, ancient ruins, ornate temples, Thai cuisines and last but not least, shopping. Let us share with you our top three authentic Thailand experiences. By tourist numbers, Bangkok remains the hot favourite city within Thailand due to its vibrant culture, affordable food and shopping and travel convenience. Being the capital of Thailand, it also encompasses the best essence of Thailand. Marvel at the sights of gleaming temples, take a longtail boat through floating markets, stuff yourself silly at humble street stalls or enjoy haute cuisines at rooftop restaurants. The experiences and possibilities are endless; the only thing you have to do is grab a plane ticket and be on your way to what may be the best yet easiest holiday experience ever. We highly recommend heading to Platinum Fashion Mall for the best wholesale shopping experience, Chatuchuk Market for the world’s largest weekend market and Siam district for the best cafes and authentic Thai cuisines served up in proper restaurant settings. If you wish for a cultural and surreal travel experience, head over to Chiang Mai, Thailand’s northern capital. This place is perfect if you wish to step out from the whirlwind pace of life and simply recharge with fabulous food and leisurely wandering. We highly recommend the Wat Phra That Doi Suthep,

The temple is about an hour’s ride away from the main city but stands magnificently atop Doi Suthep, which translates to the mountain west of Chiang Mai. Enter the temple grounds and seek peace and calmness needed to counter the bustling lifestyle most of us have today. If you wish to go on a little adventure, explore Wiang Kum Kam, an archaeological site along the Ping River that was built by King Magrai in 1288. destination! This lovely island is one of Thailand’s largest islands and has possibly been in the tourism industry the longest compared to any other Thai island. Even so, instead of being passé, it has embraced the needs of modern day travellers and a new generation of resort goers. There are many awardwinning resorts located on the island, but we highly recommend you get one by the fine sand beaches. For the best seafood experience, head over to Jun Hom Seafood, located by the beachfront of Bang Por Beach at Mae Nam and enjoy a laidback and cosy dining experience with fresh seabreeze coupled with an amazing view. Novelty seekers will definitely love the Hin Ta and Hin Yai Rocks situated by the Lamai Beach. The area is also packed with street stalls selling sweets and other local snacks. Autumn in Tasmania
2 1
Some 40% of Tasmania is protected as national parks and while most trees in the rainforest are evergreen, there are those that shed their leaves in autumn (March to May) to create the most amazing kaleidoscope of colours. 2 1
Kaleidoscope of Colour There are many great reasons to travel to Australia’s island state however autumn is a special time for those who love nature and photographing it. It’s called the ‘turning of the Fagus’ or when the leaves of the native Nothofagus trees change from green to yellow to orange and red. Other introduced trees join in the display to add additional hues to the palette of forest colours. Two of the best national parks to witness this all-natural display are Cradle Mountain and Mount Field, with one in Tasmania’s north and the other in the south. it’s recommended flying into Launceston and out of Hobart or vice versa. Fly-drive is the best way to discover Tasmania and, with ideal and relaxed driving conditions plus lots to see and sample on the road, Australia’s island state is a paradise just waiting to be discovered.
01
Hobart and Mount Field With just 200,000 residents (Tasmania’s population is only 500,000), Hobart is small enough to be personal but big enough to offer a sophisticated lifestyle. With ideal weather, the downtown docks and Battery Point beside the Derwent River is best explored on foot with Saturday’s Salamanca Market being the perfect time to enjoy some of the state’s delicious produce especially fruit. Pick up a rental car and head northwest from Hobart on well-signposted roads for Mount Field but you’ll soon be distracted by things to see and do. At Bridgewater, just out of suburban Hobart, decisions will have to be made – Tasmanian Devils at Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary or delicious cool temperate wines at Stefano Lubiana Wines? It’s best to choose both options as the devils and other wildlife offer a great introduction to Australia’s unusual fauna. On the other hand, the biodynamic, boutique and hand-crafted wines like Riesling and Pinot Noir produced by Stefano Lubiana are rated among Australia’s finest. Plan to be here at lunchtime to enjoy some rustic Italian fare featuring locally-grown biodynamic produce. A designated non-drinking driver needs to be assigned when visiting vineyards. All this is great preparation for the amazing colours waiting at Mount Field National Park. While there are longer walks for the adventurous (winter snow on the top of Mount Dobson), most will be content to stay on the signposted walks along the forest-lined stream leading to the famous Russell Falls. The vegetation and colours are amazing and it’s not only the Fagus, the tree ferns are the world’s tallest.

Retrace your tracks from the park and make a decision to head through the Central Highlands or the West Coast for Cradle Mountain National Park. This means stopping at Curringa Farm for the first route or Pumphouse Point in Lake St. Clair National Park for the West Coast route. You know you’re in good hands at either overnight stop as both just received national accolades at the Tourism Australia Awards. Make time to explore each place with Curringa Farm offering sheep shearing, rounding up and forest walks while at Pumphouse Point, forest walks, mountain biking, lake cruises, and the Wall in the Wilderness are essential activities.
02
Cradle Mountain and the North Cradle Mountain has many moods depending on the season and all appeal for different reasons. The autumn colours are dramatic against a backdrop of exposed rocky peaks etched by eons of glaciation and mirror-like lakes. The Enchanted Walk is perfect to experience the

some may just stay overnight here, Launceston is a great base to explore the Tamar Valley home to award-winning, cool climate wineries, orchards, berry producers, and a range of activities from zip-lining through the forest to Bridestowe Lavender Estate just northeast of the city. For those who don’t want to travel far, dine in restaurants in and around the city such Stillwater and the exciting new Geronimo Aperitivo Bar and Restaurant in the city or the restaurant at Josef Chromy Wines at nearby Relbia. Before flying out of Launceston stop by the Tasmanian Gourmet Sauce Company and the Tasmanian Honey Company near the airport or the Evandale Sunday Market should your departure coincide with this lively local market. Catch sight of Central Japan, Chubu 3
Immerse in a week of gourmet food, hands-on experiences and unforgettable stories as H.I.S. Travel takes you on a trip to discover Chubu like never before
1 1 Towering walls of snow along the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route 2 Be tickled by the antics of Japan’s Snow Monkey 3 Prehistoric giants roam the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum 4 Shirakawago’s traditional farmhouses
Chubu Region consists of nine prefectures and is located in the center of Japan’s largest island, Honshu. Located between Kanto (Tokyo) and Kansai (Osaka) regions are numerous highly raved mountains and astounding places that exude the best side of Mother Nature. Here are some highlights you will definitely get to enjoy during the trip! The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, a seasonal attraction, is best known as
“the Roof of Japan” as it passes through the dynamic scenery of Mt. Tateyama within the Japan Alps. Traverse over 90km with a variety of vehicles (cable-cars, trolley buses and ropeway) as the elevation changes over 2,400m from Toyama Prefecture to Nagano Prefecture. The main attraction though, will have to be the majestic snow corridor as it forms walls as tall as 20m high. The Jigokudani Monkey Park offers visitors a unique experience of seeing wild monkeys bathing in a natural hot spring, a highly popular activity for Japanese themselves. This park is home to Japanese Macaques, more commonly known as Snow Monkeys. The attraction is formed based on the monkey’s natural habitat, in the forests of the Jigokudani valley in Yamanouchi.

Recognised as one of the top three dinosaur museums in the world, Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Musuem will definitely thrill the Jurassic enthusiasts. Dinosaur World, the museum’s principal exhibition, holds more than 40 dinosaur skeletons accompanied with English explanations. At the entrance of the exhibition, do not be alarm to come into an incredibly life like Tyrannosaurs Rex, made from animatronics. Declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995, the Shirakawago and neighbouring Gokayama regions line the Shogawa River Valley in the remote mountainous area that spans from Gifu to Toyama Prefectures. These attractions are famous for their traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses that hold a rich history, some dating back to 250 years ago.

Riding through the Rockies A picturesque UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Canadian Rocky Mountains are a sight to behold. These snow-capped mountains, colossal evergreens, and crystalline lakes are home to Canada’s diverse wildlife. Over the past 25 years, Rocky Mountaineer has offered more than 65 unique vacation packages on board its luxury trains through four distinctive rail routes that cover the rich history and natural wonders of British Colombia and Alberta. One of the many itineraries is the Seattle to Calgary route, which includes a day of exploring some of Seattle’s great sights, including Chinatown, Pioneer Square, Pike Place Market and the Space Needle. The next day’s adventure begins at King Street Station for check-in onto the Rocky Mountaineer. Enjoy dinner on board as the train moves on to Vancouver. Look out for the gleaming Lakes Union, fishing fleets of Everett, Cascade Mountains and a gorgeous sunset view of Bellingham Bay. Following a night’s sleep in Vancouver, the tour makes a stop at Vancouver Lookout, a tower in Vancouver that
provides 360˚ aerial views of the beautiful city. At the next pitstop, enjoy the North Shore Tour with Capilano Suspension Bridge and Grouse Mountain. Experience a dramatic change of scenery as you move from the lush green fields of Fraser Valley to river canyons near the Coast and Cascade Mountains, before you reach a desert-like environment of the BC Interior. Take a half-day tour into Yoho National Park for picture-perfect moments around Emerald Lake and the Spiral Tunnels. The day ends at Lake Louise for self-exploration before another day’s tour from Lake Louise to Calgary, which includes a ride on the Banff Gondola. Take to the skies next with the Summit Helicopter Flightseeing. View majestic mountains and glaciers from a thrilling height more than 2,300m above sea level. The end of the Rocky Mountaineer journey

culminates at the exquisite city of Calgary. With the Stay & Play plan, travellers get to enjoy GoldLeaf or SilverLeaf Service while travelling on the Rocky Mountaineer. GoldLeaf allows passengers to enjoy a twolevel, glass domed coach with full-length windows to enjoy the charming beauty of nature just outside. The experience is accompanied by gourmet hot meals and complimentary beverages and snacks at the exclusive dining room. On overnight stays, remain comfortable in deluxe accommodations. For SilverLeaf travellers, experience panoramic views through single-level glass dome coaches and enjoy hot entrees served at your seat, along with complimentary alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. 29th March to 3rd April
ST PATRICK’S FESTIVAL
BALISPIRIT FESTIVAL
Dublin, Ireland: While this holiday is just an excuse to wear green and drink a lot, this reverent day marks the death anniversary of Saint Patrick who spread Christianity to Irish pagans and allegedly drove all snakes off the island. Over the course of four days, catch the pageantry of Irish pride in the city centre, and then have a family day of carnival rides and greasy street food at the Funfairs. St Paddy’s Day wouldn’t be complete without a pint of Guinness or two at the Irish Craft Beer & Whiskey Village. www.stpatricksfestival.ie
Bali, Indonesia: Focus on body, spirit and mind revitalisation with yoga, meditation and healing seminars, and then shake it loose at the Night Concerts, and Dharma Fair Market. www.balispiritfestival.com
20th to 26th April SEMANA SANTA
9th to 16th April
13th to 15th April SONGKRAN
BISKET JATRA Bhaktapur, Nepal: The Kathmandu valley comes alive during Bisket Jatra, the Nepali New Year, as huge chariots carrying images of the male and female deities Bhairab and Bhadrakalias collide in a ritual of consummation and fertility. www.welcomenepal. com
23th March to 17th April MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL COMEDY FESTIVAL Melbourne, Australia: Get ready for big laughs this March. Now in its 30th year, the Comedy Festival is one of three largest comedy festivals in the year. The autumnal festival has an extensive programme of stand-up, cabaret, theatre, street performances and many more. www.comedyfestival.com.au
Chiang Mai, Thailand: The biggest and most memorable water festival in Thailand, Songkran is where the streets of many cities in the country turn wet and wild with colourful splashes and playful water gun fights. While Bangkok is a hot favourite amongst tourists, the largest water festival parade is actually held further up north in Chiang Mai, where the celebrations also take on a more religious note. songkranday.com
Seville, Spain: Holy Week is celebrated in Catholic cities all across the globe, but none with such aplomb as in Seville. Every day from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, the streets are covered in breathtakingly elaborate alfombras (carpets) of coloured sawdust and flower petals, as well as large life-sized sculptures representing the events from Christ’s Passion in processions through the streets. semana-santa.org
