A Decade into the New Millennium It’s that time of the year again, as 2010 draws to a close, with the holiday season almost upon us and 2011 just days away, I thought it would be appropiate to take a look at the car industry on a larger scope, focusing on the past ten years of the automotive industry as a whole, many changes took place of course, some for the better, others a turn for the worst, but in the fast paced world of automobiles, one day you’re in the next you’re out. I still remembered the first time I climbed into the first ever Golf GTI that packed the stunning dual-clutch gearbox way back in 2005 and being blown away by the sheer speed the automatic transmission was able to charge up and down faster than any normal mortal could. Nevertheless, DSG is here to stay and is already in the entire lineup of VW cars with other manufacturers churning out their very own versions of dual-clutch transmissions. Supercars were given a run for their money as well, no longer the realm of just Ferraris and Lamborghinis, Audi joined the fray with their sensational R8 that borrowed heavily from the concept vehicle in the Will Smith flick “I-Robot”. This also signified the beginning of a new trend in automotive lighting, the emergence of daytime-running LEDs. The R8 alone created a wave of interest and reinforced the German carmaker’s top position status with authority. Back to the LED lights though, with nearly every Audi brandishing those uber cool headlamps, other car makers are jumping on the bandwagon as well, as back in Europe, daytime lights are a must. Of course its still not a regulation in Japan, but we are seeing a large proportion of cars from the land of the rising sun spotting LEDs now too. Which of course brings us back to our December 2010 issue of Wheels, just like the previous two issues of Wheels where we featured German and Korean cars, this month we are dedicating our year-end issue to Japanese cars and anything that comes from Japan. Inside you will find Japanese facts and figures, Japanese inventions, culture, lifestyles and even electronic gadgetry! Till next year! Happy Holidays! Jackson Toh

Raymond just visited the birth place if the motor car last month, something that he has always wanted to do. Stuttgart is the home if Mercedes-Benz and Porsche and whilst there he had a ball of a time at both the Mercedes-Benz and Porsche museums, places every petrol head out there ought to visit once in his or her lifetime.

If there’s one thing that causes traffic crawls on our roads, it’s the sheer stupidity of selfish drivers - they do not understand the concept of “merging lanes”, hog the fastest lane, do not signal and best of all, come to a virtual standstill at an accident scene. God save us all...

The 2010 Formula 1 season finally concludes with Red Bull Racing’s Sebastian Vettel clinching the World Championship title smoothly in Abu Dhabi. Vettel is now the youngest World Champion, winning it at the age of 23 years and four months. Now who said you can’t have it all?

PROtOn RALLy

Rejoining international rallying after a five-year break, PROTON’s return to the coveted Asia Pacific Rally Championship (APRC) has paid off handsomely when it emerged second in the Manufacturer’s Championship in its first full season. A one-two finish at the recently-concluded China Rally last weekend by Alister McRae and Chris Atkinson reaffirmed the Malaysian car manufacturer’s resolve, determination and competitiveness in the global rallying arena as it placed itself between the traditionally-dominant manufacturers Mitsubishi and Subaru. As an added bonus, the spirited drive by McRae also earned the Scottish driver third placing in the APRC Driver’s Championship and an even bigger cause for celebration at the PROTON camp. Victory in China closes PROTON’s international rally campaign for the year on a high after seeing its drivers and the Satria Neo S2000 car endure a series of misfortunes that had often denied the team of more podium finishes.

letter of the month

a little more Graciousness

I’ve been driving in Singapore for the past 7 years and like the average road-users the bulk of my driving is for commuting to and fro work during the weekdays and attending functions or running errands on weekends. Like many of us I have my fair share of encounters with inconsiderate road-users that makes me wonder how did these people pass their driving tests. As the vehicle population in Singapore continues to grow with no respite in sight, our roads are becoming more congested which translates into longer travelling times and more time spent on the roads. Given our fast-paced lifestyle, we are always rushing for time and sometimes causing inconvenience to other road users due to certain selfish behaviours. I used to get mad easily when other drivers cut into my lane without signalling or driving at a speed much slower than the recommended speed. This is very prevalent among road warriors such as taxi and goods vehicle drivers. I’ve come to realise instead of complaining about how bad other drivers are, we can make a difference by being safe and considerate road users ourselves.

We always read about road-users bemoaning their counterparts. Some of us go to the extend of posting photographs and even videos to name and shame such culprits. Let’s give these taxi uncles and lorry drivers a break. They spend long hours on the road and having to deal with so many inconsiderate drivers themselves, it’s not difficult to understand why they drive as if they own the roads. Of course there are times when such people are in the wrong and they ought to be horned and flashed at to caution them. With an ageing population and recently our government hinting that we should retire even later, we can expect more senior drivers on the roads as well. These people tend to have slower reaction time and we should also learn to be more patient with such road users. Whatever it is, we should not just look at the speck in other’s eye and not perceive the plank in our own eye. Nobody can claim to be the perfect driver but if we can be more gracious, I’m sure others will reciprocate down the road. Who knows? Driving will once again be an enjoyment and a joy like the good old days my grandparents used to recall. Let’s not just love your ride (recall SMRT?) but love your drive too. Wong Shiu Hong Editor: Well said Shiu Hong! Especially in bustling cities like our little island where traffic conditions can really cause tempers to flare. It’s always important to keep a level head when you get behind the wheel. Always remain calm and collected, you will be surprised how much better a driver we can all become if we all practice a little graciousness every now and then. Congratulations to Wong Wai Hon He wins a $100 SPC Petrol Voucher for this issue’s Winning Letter.

PuttinG on the Brakes I’ve recently switched to a continental car and after a few weeks I felt a significant decrease in braking power. What do you guys think could be the problem? Nelson Tan

My I.U unit in my Mercedes emits a ‘bbbeeeeeep’ sound and shows error message when I slot my cashcard in. Can I repair it or buy a new one anywhere? Jason Editor: Dear Jason, all I.U units go through rigorous LTA testing and they come with a fiveyear warranty period. Within this period you can go to any VICOM, STA or JIC inspection centers and swap it for a brand new unit free of charge. After that period, the cost of replacing an entire unit is S$155.80.

Editor: You may want to go back to the authorized dealer for a periodic check. If the brakes are not functioning properly, get them changed while your vehicle is still under warranty. If you are a more performanceoriented driver, you may wish to consider upgrading to a good 4-piston caliper brake kit. Excellent brands include Tar-Ox and Brembo.

Raymond’s Column

TExT by RAymond LAI PRoudLy bRougHT To you by SPC

PreParing for a road triP It’s the school holidays once again and it’s time to round up the family for some well deserved bonding time. Well, you can either jet off to a far destination, follow a tour, or for those who love driving, head north with the folks on a road trip. otoring is a freedom of movement, of enjoying your “pride and joy” (i.e. your car), and of course, enjoying the cruise on the open road. Well, this is not quite possible here in Singapore because 1) the traffic conditions are increasingly getting worse by the day 2) our island state doesn’t have a long stretch of nice flowing country road with a scenic view. So the only place where we can actually enjoy driving and everything our “pride and joy” can offer is across the Causeway. Malaysia is a big country with diverse terrain and scenery after all. The most straightforward thing you should do (especially if you’re a novice driver) in Malaysia is to drive with your head, not with your heart. Some drivers get overwhelmed by the sense of space which the open Malaysian highways can offer. The highways can look straight and endless, especially during a long drive. Often, this feeling of openness induces unwary drivers to exceed both the legal speed limit and sometimes, the cars’ handling capabilities. Take the example of a small city runabout like a Kia Picanto. It would be nifty and nimble around town but may not cruise comfortably at high speed like a large limo or a GT could. So for the sake of safety, you ought to be aware and understand your car’s capabilities and road holding limits. Open endless highways sometimes dull the senses too. When your eyelids feel

16 WHEELS ASIA

heavy, take a break at the next rest stop. In fact, it would be wise to plan regular breaks along the way to break up the monotony. An important thing to do before the foray across is to conduct a pre-trip check on your car. You can either do this on your own or you can conveniently approach a workshop like SPC’s SpeedyCare network with its professional mechanics to perform a thorough inspection. With limited tools and resources, a self check can mean looking out for only basic things like the tyres – are they in good condition, do they have enough tread depth on them, is there any uneven wear, are they suffering from any slow punctures etc. Besides the four tyres, it is also essential to check the condition of the spare tyre to make sure that it is in useable condition. Also check and ensure that all the tools required to change a tyre are in the car. For cars with puncture repair kits instead of a spare, ensure that the kit is fully useable and complete. You can also check and top up the engine coolant, brake fluid, engine oil, washer fluid etc when necessary to their recommended optimum levels before your trip as well. A more thorough check at a workshop typically involves steps like the mechanics checking the car’s brake system, making sure that there are enough life left in the pads and discs, checking the belts (air-con, power steering, alternator etc) and making sure that they are properly adjusted and in good working order – you wouldn’t want a belt to snap or shear during a long drive on unfamiliar roads. The mechanics

at the workshop will also be able to raise the car up on a lift to check out for leaks from underneath the car as well as the condition of the suspension, steering and running gear – making sure that nothing is loosely connected and/or worn. We don’t usually have lifts to raise a car to inspect its underpinnings so this is where paying a workshop for an inspection can be significantly more thorough. Should anything go wrong with the car during your road trip, stay calm and don’t panic. Some authorized distributors, have 24 hour roadside assistance services that cover all the way to Malaysia. This number can typically be found on a distributor supplied road tax disc holder. Dial the appropriate number and some one should make their way to your location to assist you and hopefully rectify the problem. Other than authorized distributors, roadside assistance services might also be available from your insurer and obviously, if you’re an AA member, the AAM in Malaysia can render assistance. Rarely, if the problem cannot be easily resolved on the spot then the recommendation is to tow your car back to Singapore. This would be an expensive exercise but it is usually safer and more secure than to leave it at a dodgy workshop somewhere in rural Malaysia for repairs. A road trip holiday is not just about the destination but the journey as well. Get your car prepared properly, checked thoroughly and more than likely, it shouldn’t skip a beat to give you a painless memorable adventure with your family. |

cover story ou’d have to squint your eyes really hard to differentiate the updated Toyota Corolla Altis’ looks from the old car’s from certain angles. The Altis is the perfect example of the ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ philosophy that car manufacturers sometimes adopt for their popular and mass market models. The current Corolla Altis is the tenth generation of the most popular model in the world and it was launched back in 2008. Almost two and a half years on Toyota deemed that conditions are right to introduce an updated version of the tenth generation Corolla to ASEAN markets like Singapore. On the outside, the changes at either end of the car are most obvious while the overall silhouette and glasshouse are similar as before. At the front, there is a new, sportier looking bumper, new radiator grille and headlamps that make the Altis look even more similar than its Camry big brother. The rear features new tail lamps while a chrome strip above the wider number plate surround accentuates the width of the car. New alloy wheels round off the exterior tweaks. But subtlety is the

In A Nutshell

Fuel consumption numbers have improved by 1km/litre to 13.8km per litre over the outgoing 1.6’s 12.8km per litre according to Toyota’s official figures.

• Plus: You can’t go wrong with a Toyota Corolla • Minus: Short on character • Verdict: With this update, the Altis has certainly be made fitter and stronger to weather this storm to remain as one of Singapore’s most popular cars.

ReaR passengeRs will also enjoy geneRous knee and legRoom thanks to an almost flat 107bhp but the new engine betters this by 15bhp, making a total of 122bhp at 6000rpm. Peak torque has risen to 154Nm at 5200rpm, up from the previous motor’s 145Nm at 4500rpm. It delivers the required goods when worked hard and stays relatively refined as well. Outright performance is reasonable for a family car this size – the 0-100km/h sprint is dispatched in 11.8 seconds. On the transmission front, the 1.6 retains the familiar four-speed auto from the old car, albeit with tweaked software to make it operate more efficiently. The box’ shifts smoothly and incisively enough. It is also responsive to throttle inputs. There’s no Sport or ‘+/-‘ manual mode though. outgoing 1.6’s 12.8km per litre according to Toyota’s official figures. In terms of dynamics, the Altis is reasonably capable in all departments. The running gear is similar as before other than a recalibrated electric power steering system, which makes the new car’s helm feel a tad meatier and a bit more direct. Besides the steering, the Altis handles and rides very much like its predecessor – safe and a little short of inspiration while offering a comfortable and supple enough ride at all speeds. The changes to the interior are even more subtle than the exterior tweaks. These subtle tweaks include more silver plastic trim on the centre console and door trim, new backlit Optitron dials that look better than the ones in the old car and an Eco mode indicator on the instrument

The centre console features neat looking air-con controls and a touch screen DVD stereo head unit that plays multi format discs. The screen also displays images from the new reversing camera. As previously, the driving position is highly adjustable and comfortable thanks to a reach and rake adjustable steering wheel as well as height adjustments for the seat. Rear passengers will also enjoy generous knee and legroom thanks to an almost flat floor layout. Headroom is also more than sufficient for the average Asian. Storage spaces are plenty in the Altis – there are big door bins, compartments under the front armrest, cup holders and twin glove boxes on the dash. The boot is also well shaped and voluminous – it can accommodate up to four

golf bags. Moreover, the rear seats also split/ fold for an even larger load area if required. The Altis’ standard equipment list is reasonably long even in the base 1.6 model. It comes with twin airbags, ABS with EBD, Brake Assist, touch screen DVD stereo with controls on the steering wheel, alarm and immobilizer and so on. As with every Toyota model from Borneo Motors, the new Altis comes with a five-year unlimited mileage warranty for total peace of mind. With the recent trend in high COE prices, mass models like the Altis are having a hard time in the car market. Only the fittest will survive in the gloomy car market these days. With this update, the Altis has certainly be made fitter and stronger to weather this storm to remain as one of Singapore’s most popular cars. |

Story by C. K. LIm

n the world of cars, it is not uncommon to see cars getting a facelift, sometimes two, before they are entirely replaced with new models. This is done in order to ensure that the car is kept up to date with the competition during its intended lifespan. Introduced in 2006, the Lexus IS250 has already undergone its mid-cycle facelift towards the end of 2008, receiving mildly revised exterior and interior styling, along with retuned suspension and steering. Its Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) was replaced with the Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM), an integrated vehicle handling and software control system. The updates that came with the latest facelift include new headlamps with darkened surrounds and LED daytime running lights, new tail lights, revised tailpipes, redesigned radiator grille and new front and rear bumpers, and new alloy

enhancement wheels. There are also new exterior colours. To recognise the new car, it is much easier to do so from the front than from its posterior. Helping to give this Japanese compact executive a subtly more aggressive look are the new, more angular front bumpers and the darkened headlamp surrounds. The LED daytime running lights provides the IS250 with a contemporary night design. There is nothing new underneath the smart bodywork, meaning that the engine powering the Lexus is the same 2.5-litre V6 with direction injection that puts out 205bhp at 6400rpm and 252Nm at 4800rpm, propelling the car from rest to 100km/h in a decent 8.4 seconds. It can be said with confidence that this six-cylinder powerplant is leading the compact executive segment in terms of smoothness and refinement. Even when

Complementing the V6 is a six-speed automatic transmission that has been programmed to deliver gearshifts that are seamlessly smooth. Sure, it may not shift as fast as the twin-clutch gearboxes that are the rage nowadays, but not that an IS250 driver would mind. For the occasional spirited sprints, this six-speed auto offers the manual override option via the gear lever itself or the paddle shifters mounted on the steering column. With the IS250, Lexus is targeting the executives who look forward to a comfortable, soothing drive home after work, rather than those who would take the long way home just so they can indulge in the driving pleasure. As such, its handling is more of the assured and competent type instead of the engaging and almost-unsafe kind.

first drive Ride comfort is top notch, except when driving over high frequency irregularities at speed. Being a rear-driven vehicle, the rear can be brought into play in the hands of a skilled driver by turning out the VDIM. VDIM integrates the driver safety aids like ABS and VSC with other electronic systems such as electric power steering for an improved response to driver input, performance and overall safety. Unlike the VSC, which intervenes only after a skid is detected, VDIM prevents skids, slides and wheel spins by taking preventive measures. Climbing in, there are some insignificant changes to the trim but the IS250’s cabin is still a plush, classy affair, save for some inferior-looking (and feeling) controls. Fit and finish is of the typical Lexus standards and the build quality is expectedly good.

Thanks to the electrically adjustable seat and steering column (manual adjustment on the non-Premium model), this baby Lexus still offers an excellent driving position. At the rear, it is still lacking behind its main rivals in terms of accommodation. The boot, though well shaped, is only sufficient in terms of capacity. The IS250 Premium tested here features the Electro-Multi Vision display on the centre console, which comes with a 7-inch touch-screen display and an in-dash 6-DVD changer. Besides having navigation function, it also has a reversing camera and Bluetooth connectivity for mobile phones. In addition, audiophiles

will take delight in the 14-speaker Mark Levinson audio system. Other addition equipment it has over the basic model (costing $20k lesser) include HID headlights with LED daytime running lights and automatic self-levelling, cruise control, rain sensor, memory for front passenger seat, self-dimming rear-view mirror, amongst other things. With the IS250, Lexus has demonstrated that it certainly practices what it preaches. Its relentless pursuit of perfection has led it to continuously introducing small tweaks to the car, gradually refined it to be an improved compact executive than what it was at its inception. |

Besides being more road-tax friendly, the Wish also boasts best-in-class fuel efficiency and horsepower to match. The 1.8L visually looks identical to its 2.0L brethren, but it’s underneath the metal that should get everyone’s attention. The 1.8L Wish now is equipped with a more technically advanced engine and transmission over the outgoing 1.8L model that ended its run earlier this year. This addictive combination allows for impressive fuel economy figures and horsepower. But most importantly, thanks to the smaller engine displacement, Wish drivers will also pay lower taxes and save

The new 1.8L Wish is capable of executing continuous valve-lift control and valve timing control. This allows the car its tried and tested fuel efficiency rating of 14.9km/l or 6.7l/100km. The 1.8L pumps out an impressive 144bhp with a combined emissions rating of just 160.2g/km. Fuel efficiency is further enhanced by a seven-speed Continuous Variable Transmission (CVT) Sport Sequential Shiftmatic that allows the engine to operate seamlessly with the most efficient revolutions at any given speed. But of course performance becomes secondary when it comes to buying a mid-sized MPV and the 1.8L Wish doesn’t disappoint in this sense. Second-row seats are 60:40 split seats and both the second and third row seats can be folded down for more storage space if and when desired. Space in the third row is moderate and ideally for small-sized adults, but that’s common of most MPVs anyway. Safety features offered include Antilock Braking System (ABS), six airbags (two in front, side and curtain-type) and traction control with electronic stability. Driving MPVs has since become a trend as families start to pay attention to comfort during road journeys. Sedans are not the utmost popular choice of transport as MPVs and even SUVs (Sports Utility Vehicles) push their way front with their versatility and convenience. Big Friendly giant he Lexus RX range is selling so well in Singapore for over 10 years that authorised distributor Borneo Motors decided to introduce the entry-level luxury Japanese SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle) here: the Lexus RX 270. With the RX 270, owners can enjoy the same benefits as its bigger-engined RX350 but with less stress on the wallet due to the smaller engine for example. If you still cannot tell from its name, the RX 270 houses a 2.7-litre in-line 4-cylinder engine. Looking largely similar to the RX 350, the RX 270 also has high intensity discharge (HID) headlights as standard. With the Smart Access keyless entry system – which has a touch sensor-type switch on the front door which you can use – I walked right up to the car and opened the door immediately without having to take the key out of my pocket.

32 WHEELS ASIA

After you’ve adjusted your sitting position, the seat automatically slides two inches back and the steering wheel tilts up and slides forward when the engine is turned off. When you next enter the car again, the seat automatically moves into the last position you set it to when you push the ON button. If more than one driver uses the car, there are three memory seat settings which you can utilise. A maximum power of 185bhp at 5,800rpm and maximum torque of 252Nm at 4,200rpm is available from the RX 270, delivering through the six-speed Super intelligent Electronically Controlled Transaxle (ECT) that aids fuel efficiency.

With the RX 270, owners can enjoy the same benefits as its bigger-engined RX350 but with less stress on the wallet due to the smaller engine for example.

Lexus RX 270

Once yOu are clOcking lOw fuel efficiency, the ecO Driving inDicatOr will alert yOu. To help you track your fuel efficiency is the Eco Driving Indicator which displays your current fuel economy with a bar graph. Once you are clocking low fuel efficiency, the Eco Driving Indicator will alert you. Targeted at owners who want comfort without compromise of luxury, the RX 270 provides a smooth ride but the significantly reduced power and torque (compared to the RX 350) means encountering occasional situations where the pedal-pushing needs more effort than usual. Hence, a 0-100km/h time of 11 seconds is not surprising. The uniquely-designed double-wishbone rear suspension contributes to greater cabin room and a low floor. For a car this big and tall, it is essential that the floor is low enough for children or ladies with short skirts to enter the car easily. Should you need more space within the RX 270, the 40:20:40 rear seats can be reclined and folded down.

In a Nutshell • Plus: Almost same standard equipment levels as its higher-spec variants • Minus: The 4-cylinder feels like it needs a little more grunt • Verdict: If you want a RX model from Lexus primarily for its space and advanced features, then I would think the entry-level RX 270 is sufficient.

Because of the low floor, it would be a strain if the gear lever is placed too low. It might seem a bit strange at first to have the gear lever higher up than usual but it actually is quite intuitive. For music options, you can put in six discs of your own or plug in your MP3 player to the USB port within the deep centre console box. Now, Singapore does not have many hills yes, but the Hill-Start Assist Control in the RX

270 can be a great help if you encounter a steep slope. Depress the brake pedal further when you want to make use of it. Brake pressure is then applied to prevent the car from rolling back. Once you are done using it, brake pressure remains for about two seconds after you release your foot. Note that the system is not a rollback detector, but a slope assist which the driver can control in forward or reverse.

Lexus RX 270 Just like the RX 350, the Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) helps to keep you safe in the RX 270. The VDIM works by anticipating loss of control of the car. Basically, the VDIM is a one-stop control for all the electronic driving aids – Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Brake Assist (BA), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TRC). Each function can be manually controlled individually though. For example, if the car gets stuck in mud, the TRC and VSC can be turned off. Other safety features include no less than 10 standard airbags – located in the side curtains, front seats, rear and knee (for front passengers only). Prices for the RX 270 start at $187,000 with COE for the basic variant. Top up $8,000 for the moonroof version and a further $7,000 for the super panoramic roof version. If you want a RX model from Lexus primarily for its space and advanced features, then I would think the entry-level RX 270 is sufficient. However, be gentle with the right foot driving! |

Straight talking

Suzuki's new Kizashi is the first all-new large sedan, but their desire for big sales means the Kizashi has to out-smart its main rivals - in this case, the Legacy.

Suzuki haS recently launched itS all new, and they Say, brilliant kizaShi, ou might simplistically refer to this one as a four-door saloon. But to Suzuki, it's more than that. Because it's not an MPV, SUV, hatchback or cabriolet doesn't mean it's just a plain saloon like your dad's Corolla. This new Suzuki is a contender in the large sedan segment. But what has happened in recent years is that the simple sedan sector now has a number of sub-sectors, and this one, arguably pioneered by the Europeans, is as commercially hot as any of them. The Subaru Legacy has been around

36 WHEELS ASIA

much earlier than the Kizashi. The all-wheel drive 2.0i version here has a 2.0-litre - not a 2.5, note - four-cylinder engine and, despite stiff competition from all, it manages to sell and broadly outperform most of its rivals, a situation which Suzuki is keen to redress with the recent launch of the new Kizashi. So, can the latest all-Japanese sedan better its closest rival? Let's see... While waiting for the haze to clear, drizzle to stop or pigs to fly, we have little else to do but stroll around, gazing thoughtfully at the cars. Sometimes a new car's appearance grows on you,

Suzuki Kizashi 2.4 (A) vs Subaru Legacy 2.0i (A) sometimes it's the opposite and sometimes you're certain from the start. But with the new Kizashi, we knew we liked it before even setting off, and then it grew on us. Not only does it have a particularly smooth, flowing, well-balanced form, but its racy alloys, low-profile tyres and nominal side skirts (plus some nice interior details) initially made us wonder whether we'd accidentally picked up the wrong model, which might deem it overpriced for this test. But there's no "Luxury Edition" badge on this one. This is how the Kizashi look, as standard. Not bad at all, we think. Opinion here is split on the Subaru Legacy though. Some argue that visually it doesn't properly fulfil its remit. Saloon, yes. Premium, yes. But "sporty"? Not really. A 2.5-litre turbocharged version would do it, but in entry-level 2.0i guise on remarkable 16-inch alloys, the Legacy is perhaps too tame and gentlemanly in appearance for thrusting execs. On the plus side, however, it's unmistakably a Subaru, which we see as a good thing. For driver and, indeed, passenger comfort, the Kizashi wins hands down. There's something about its shape and dimensions, its springs or stuffing, or a combination of all four, which sets the Suzuki just apart from the Subaru. Oh yes, the Subaru. Well, once you've adjusted your driving position, you'll start to realise that you don't exactly feel as "sucked in" - more like perching on it. On the road, the new Suzuki feels every bit as eager as a Swift Sport. Though it's not powered by any fanciful turbocharged motor, it doesn't feel lethargic - in fact, the throttle response is terrific. Note too, that

to Spearhead an entirely new family of Suzuki carS.

the Suzuki produces its peak 230Nm mid-rev, so it's evident the Kizashi is comfortably stronger in this respect than the Subaru. Closer inspection of figures shows that the Kizashi (8.8 seconds) actually beats the Legacy (11.1 seconds) to 100km/h, though the Legacy's engine refinement is still better. The Legacy, as mentioned earlier, has the benefit of a smooth-sounding lump. And despite being 400cc down, it also delivers all that 150bhp with more urgency and punch - Subaru obviously putting all their rallying pedigree to good use. Hard, then, to criticise the Legacy with the knowledge that it can pip the Kizashi in this respect. But it's just a shame that it took further to stop from 80km/h. Also, our Legacy's brake pedal travelled further, and the body nose-dived disconcertingly, which didn't help matters... We referred earlier to the Subaru being

38 WHEELS ASIA

gentlemanly, and we'll use that adjective again to describe its ride and handling. Which isn't necessarily a negative judgement, because if you rarely drive along sweeping roads but do spend a lot of time on construction-here-sorry-for-theinconvenience-caused streets and appreciate comfort at the expense of racetrack body control, the Legacy could be your car. It also feels larger, heavier and more relaxed in the way it rides and steers. But as mentioned, we - unfortunately - do have to mark it down a notch for its braking, which had the effect of lifting the rear end and needed a small steering adjustment to hold a straight line. If your priority, however, is "sports", then it's the Suzuki. Though it doesn't ride harshly and can never be described as uncomfortable, it has the lightness in corners which makes it fun to drive. It is willing

and eager to turn, handle speed bumps with aplomb and corners with minimal roll. Verdict As is most usually the case these days, there is no loser between this pair. But a winner has to be picked - well, if we can't decide, how on earth could you... Right? Buyers of the Legacy 2.0i should evolve swiftly into happy, contented owners. The sporting history of the brand, the smooth lump, that competitive price, acceptable

A question with no Answer It’s a fun yet troubling fantasy. Between the GT-R34, Mark IV Supra and FD RX7, which would you pick? What if your choice meant giving up the other two for good?

picture that scene all the time in my head, just to give myself a headache. In it, there’s a hanger. A beautiful lady in a sleek pantsuit and very very tight top (first two buttons unbuttoned, naturally) is standing there. But I barely notice her. Because just past her pert bottom (okay, I notice her a little) are three far sexier objects of desire. A GT-R. A Mark IV. And an FD.The lady (let’s call her Jane) speaks. “Any of these cars can be yours for a day. But – and this is a huge but – your choice will mean giving up on ever experiencing the other two cars. Forever.” This is the point where I realise Jane is the pure embodiment of evil. While I’d say the GT-R is my ultimate favourite thing on wheels, followed by the FD

and then the Supra, if one had to pick one at the expense of the other two, it becomes a heartbreaking conundrum. Each of these vehicles of mass acceleration is simply brilliant. Twin-turbo madness, gorgeously constructed. Any of them could unleash hell on asphalt. In the GT-R, you’ve got everything that made this beast the Godzilla it is. The aggressive, menacing stance that says it eats Porsches for breakfast. Those four circles that wave goodbye to other cars as it disappears into the distance. The sheer audacity of taking a turn at speeds other cars couldn’t even manage on a straight line…

But the FD has plenty going for it too. Precise and closeto-perfect balance. Timeless good looks. Brazen rear-wheel drive mischief just a throttle blip away. And most seductive of all, that divine little rotary engine telling conventional pistons to go shove it where the sun don’t shine. Then there’s the stunner that is the Supra. This is the ultimate ricer to ravage roads with. As an older model, it doesn’t boast as much technology as the GT-R, but it’s one of Japan’s closest things to American muscle, and it looks superb. It’d be fantastic for primal, pedal-to-the-metal drags and mad drifts. So there in that hanger, I’m basically a deer caught in

headlights. Three gorgeous pairs of them, four if you count Jane. Till this day, the only resolution to this scenario I am least unhappy with is the coward’s way out. I turn and leave. For me, this particular exercise is less about gaining a car I love than it is about losing two cares I adore. Even in the realm of imagination, I just can’t see myself choosing one over the others. The opportunity cost is way too high. By leaving that hanger, I can at least hope that Jane changes the terms the next time we meet. Though knowing her, she’ll probably throw in an NSX the next time round… just to watch me squirm. |

Brake Fade – losing a brake in emergency situation Perhaps one of the most commonly overlooked factors when it comes to traffic accidents whereby the vehicles could not stop in time; your brakes must have be heat resistant or able to dissipate heat quickly in case of emergency braking maneuvers. To test how good your brake pads fare against brake fade, drivers can try it by applying multiple emergency brakes while moving fairly quickly downhill. Your brake pads must work for you even on the very last brake in emergency situation or when you driving down very steep hill. Damage to Brake Rotor – care of your total repair cost Some brake pads are too abrasive and as such will actually damage your car’s brake rotors over time, this could even lead to expensive repair costs should your rotors become so badly damaged they become unusable. Hence it is important to look out for a non-abrasive brake pad like those NiBK made on non abrasive base that should allow you to use the same rotor for all you car life. Noise and Vibration – frustrating every one Many times, drivers usually change their

Carbon-Graphite base

brake pads when the brakes emit a loud screeching noise whenever they brake, but did you know that this noise could also be generated by incorrect installation of the brake pads or poor brake rotor condition. For optimum performance, even the smallest of parts like the shims, sliding clips and pins have to be properly installed and lubricated with the correct grease like the NiBK – antisqueal grease which comes with each NiBK Brake Pad Set. Life Expectancy – longest drive is not always the best choice The biggest concern with many drivers is how long are the brake pads going to last. Hard and abrasive brake pads tend to be able to run longer distances but the damage they cause to your rotors far outweigh the savings incurred. NiBK set of brake pads from JNBK Corporation should allow you to drive about 40,000km before they are worn out. But this is also dependent on your driving style and the current condition of your rotors. Brake Dust – makes your rims and streets environment dirty Brake pad dust usually forms your rims because manufacturers use steel fiber with carbon graphite as a lubricant in their friction material when producing brake pads. Others just use clay or normal soot; these components contribute to increased brake pad dust making your rims appear dirty. Dustless brake pads like NiBK are more costly to produce but are beneficial to drivers not only for aesthetically but also for health reasons.

RACING GETS SAFER

Unlike other mass-market racewear brands, Stand21 prides itself on making made-to-measure safety equipment for racing drivers. here’s no denying that motorsports is dangerous. High-speed crashes, serious injuries and even death are possible consequences of motor racing gone wrong. However, if the correct safety precautions are taken by the driver, motorsports can still be enjoyed for what it is. That’s why safety should always start from the driver. You can have the best car in the world with the latest technology, but if you fail to protect yourself then even the most expensive and advanced equipment will not be able to save you. Yves Morizot, the founder and president of French

52 WHEELS ASIA

racewear manufacturer Stand21, was helping his friend out of the burning race car when an idea hit him. Deciding to pursue a cause dedicated to racing safety, Morizot started building his business with this cause. “I was working as a baker then. After witnessing my friend’s incident, I continued saving up for the next three years before I set up my own shop at the age of 22 selling car parts and accessories. I was running a one-man operation and I had to wash windows of other shops in the street to pay the bills,” recalled the 64-year-old Frenchman who has come a long way to

strongly advocate safety in motorsports for the driver. Embracing the theory of protecting the driver from head to toe, Stand21 focuses on saving lives and promoting safety in motorsports. Today, it is a family business that has grown from just Morizot himself as the sole employer-cum-employee to 150 employees (including worldwide franchisees). Unlike other mass-market racewear brands, Stand21 prides itself on making made-to-measure safety equipment for racing drivers. Made-to-measure meaning full customisation from body fitting measurements to suit design and even stitch colour. Instead of having mass-

produced standard sizes that can be sold off shelves, Stand21’s products are individualised to customers’ needs and preferences. But besides being pretty and comfortable, Stand21’s products are all backed by advanced safety technologies such as Heat Stress Control, a medical research programme that led to the invention of a unique breathable, stretchable and fireproof FIA 8856-2000 homologated fabric. With just two layers, this fabric allows perspiration to evaporate faster, thus cooling the body by prolonging the time taken for the body’s temperature to reach the critical level where

Racing Suits

physiological performance starts deteriorating. Enhanced performance is achieved as a result. It’s hard to explain the incredible feeling when you put on the Stand21 suit. The best way is to try it for yourself and feel the difference. Many drivers underestimate the power of heat and how it can significantly affect your performance. Fatigue, dehydration and heat exhaustion are just some common examples of heatrelated conditions experienced under extreme temperatures. Started in 1970, the Dijon-based company designs, manufactures and homologates its products – helmet, HANS® device, gloves, innerwear, socks and boots. The product ranges follow stringent FIA standards or FIA-approved ones (SNELL SA, SFI) and are available for customisation to your liking. Stand21 is also one of only two licensees in the world to manufacture the HANS® System and is the only one that designs made-

to-measure devices for Formula One and World Rally Championships (WRC). Once upon a time Stand21 was everywhere on drivers in Formula One. Remember the famous photo taken in 1986 of the four then-drivers’ title contenders (Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost, Nigel Mansell and Nelson Piquet) sitting on the pit wall? In that particular picture, all four drivers are decked out in Stand21 gear. Stand21 was actively involved in F1 from 1975 to about 1991. The sport started to get too commercialised and sponsorships in F1 meant providing products to drivers

for free or even having to pay drivers to use your products. Not wanting to diminish the value of the Stand21 brand and what it epitomises, Morizot rejected all sponsorship requests. “When you see anyone wearing anything from Stand21, you know they bought it because they believe in what they pay for and not because it is some kind of sponsorship obligation they have to fulfil.” You can only get Stand21 products through their exclusive retailers, who are direct factory representatives of Stand21, and not in generic racing equipment

shops or supermarkets. This way, Stand21 will always be connected to end users and the dilution of brand through price wars is avoided. The latest member to join the Stand21 exclusive dealer network is Singapore, represented by Fong Mui Garage R Trading Pte Ltd. When asked why they chose to take on the Stand21 brand, Lawrence Lee, 31, managing director of HKS Garage R said, “I used to race when I was younger and I was involved in crashes before. Many people take injuries lightly, but what they don’t realise is that the pain and aches will hit you later in life. Prevention is always better than cure.” “HKS Garage R has a racing team and we understand things like heat stress very well. Hence our interests are aligned with Stand21 and we believe in promoting safety and quality in motorsports. You need not be a professional driver or wait until an accident happens before you invest in quality gear. I cannot emphasise how important it is to be properly geared up – safe, comfortable and fast, that sounds like good racing, no? |

Craving ramen

“Drive-to hotspots to savour a bowl of soupy Japanese soul food”

here’s something about ramen that satisfies the twin yearning for noodles and piping hot soup. Springy curls of noodles bathed in steamy, savoury broth, a couple slices of pork charshu and a perfectly cooked soy sauce egg that promises tender whites and a sunny, molten yolk... Unless you’re on a low-carb, low-salt diet, what’s not to like? While nothing beats slurping good ramen in Japan, noodle loving foodies here have been blessed with more than a few ramen imports of late, with a couple backed by “celebrity ramen chefs” no less. Years before ramen caught the fancy of the masses, Tampopo at Liang Court caused a tiny flutter

among foodies for its bouncy ramen and tender charshu. Then came Sapporo Ramen Miharu, which saw diners flooding the joint at The Gallery Hotel for a bowl of authentic, bouncy Sapporo imported noodles in a salty, creamy pork broth. Marutama Ramen, a chain from Japan, caused yet another big stir when it opened at The Central two years ago. Snaking queues formed for its light, chicken broth-based ramen, while those who preferred a creamier, richer stock skipped downstairs to Ramen Santouka for instant (back then, that is) and more delicious gratification. This may be a city of plentiful tasty eats, but mmm, we’ll have a bowl of well-made ramen anytime.

pork bone broth topped with slices of silky pork cheek. That’s the signature tokusen toroniku shio ramen (S$19.50). At almost S$20 a bowl, the price isn’t exactly cheerful but after savouring the bowl of goodness, you won’t have much to complain. Servings are limited, so go early. Should the pork cheeks run out, try the other popular bowls like the shio ramen, shoyu ramen and miso ramen (S$13.50 each). Décor-wise, Santouka is unpretentious and

ichi prides itself on its ramen dishes and a rich tonkotsu broth that’s boiled with six types of vegetables and created by their experienced. Japanese master chef with over 30 years’ experience in ramen kitchens. Besides ramen, the menu here offers a wide variety of Japanese eats, from sashimi and sushi to rice and desserts.

But if noodles are what you’re hankering after, sup on the hearty, spicy tonkotsu ramen (S$11.90), a top-seller here. For milder palates, go for the lighter Kyotostyle Kyofu tonkotsu ramen which features three chicken soup-based ramen choices (from S$15.90) available only at this outlet. For sides, the gyoza (S$4.80) won’t disappoint. Pan-fried

before being steamed, each plump pouch boasts a juicy meat filling beneath thin, crispy skin. Dip them in the piquant soyvinegar- chilli oil sauce and savour the medley of flavours with each mouthful. Cheery and spacious, this is the sort of restaurant that baby-toting folks will appreciate. Service is efficient but be prepared to queue on weekends.

For ramen, the Shiromaru classic and Akamaru modern (S$15 each) are hot favourites and both boast thin, straight, springy noodles. Expect Japanese classics with a twist. Come here for its ebi ramen (from $14.80), ramen in prawn-based stock cooked in French consommé style. The standard ebi ramen is reminiscent of local hae

Outside of and in line with the prawn-centric ramen offerings, the rest of the menu consists of prawn side dishes like prawn spring rolls (S$6), prawn gyozas (S$7.50), and prawn and avocado rice bowl (S$8). HKS DDR

Do You DDR? No it’s not the latest tuner-endorsed reiteration of the immensely popular arcade game, but a worldwide revolution in fuel additive that’s already taken most of Japan by storm – that’s the HKS Direct Deposit Remover or DDR for short. The HKS DDR is a newly developed engine additive that restores and recovers engine performance due to age, wear and tear or tuning by removing engine deposits in the engine combustion chamber and spark plugs in a safe and easy manner. DDR is made from a high concentration of Hyper Polyether Amine (PEA), whose cleaning properties and performance are far superior when compared to conventional engine additives. In most engine additives, the active ingredients comprise of only about 10 – 40%, the DDR features a 75% ratio over the norm. But the best part about applying DDR to your car is the ease of use, just ensure you have more than a half-tank of fuel in your car and pour the contents of the DDR directly into your fuel tank, start the car and watch DDR work its magic! In fact DDR works best for older cars, as the build up of engine deposits are even more apparent in older

engines, and when DDR goes to work, the results are extremely significant! DDR Test It sounds all good, but does it really work? The Wheels team was fortunate enough to get a hold of one bottle of the HKS DDR from the good people at Garage R for testing and we are most happy to report that everything written on the bottle is absolutely spot-on! Almost immediately after the DDR was emptied into the fuel tank, and the engine started we noticed a huge difference with our 6-year old Hyundai with a mileage of 110,000km, the engine was a lot quieter, in fact idling seemed muted as well, it sounded almost a few years younger! Now for the actual road test, moving off and acceleration was astounding, it felt as if the car was just serviced or overhauled, pick-up was a lot smoother and faster too, the slight lag that came with age whenever we engaged the throttle was significantly decreased, the car felt a lot more eager and agile. Just from the drive alone I could have swore our 6-year old hatchback was more like just turning 2!

Protection that Lasts

Understanding modern automotive paint and how to protect and care for your car.

Modern Automotive Paint The automotive paint industry has undergone incredible changes by way of materials and processes development following the general progress of manufacturing technology from the start of 20th century until today. What used to take weeks of manual painting a new vehicle now takes hours by automated processes at car plants. Furthermore, what used to be a single layer of automotive paint coating evolved into multiple layer of system made up of individual layer of coatings with properties that are specially adapted to each other. A clear coat is applied over the colored base coat to protect the pigments from environmental degradation. These clear coats offer protection from extensive sunlight, scratches and all types of chemical attack. Since the clear coat offers protection, why would we still require paint protection products like Crystal Shield™? This is because the environment is capable of severely damaging the automotive top coats. First of all, the introduction of base coat–clear coat systems brings high gloss and DOI (distinctness of image), this new level of gloss and DOI enable the eye to pick up small defects. Secondly, to meet the increasing strict VOC emission regulations, car manufacturers formulated lower molecular weight polymers with higher

64 WHEELS ASIA

concentrations of melamine cross-linkers clear coat. This causes the top coat to be more susceptible to acid rain damage. When constantly exposed to humidity, the clear coat (non-pigmented paint) absorbs water in the surface region when rainfall, humidity and dew occur. This water contributes toward mechanical degradation such as hydrolytic decomposition of chemical bonds and acts as an oxygen carrier accelerating oxidation processes. The cost of our vehicle can be high and for that reason, we want to take good care of it. Without proper care and maintenance, your vehicle’s appearance can quickly deteriorate resulting in a loss of potential resale value and the feelgood factor of vehicle ownership. Remember your vehicle paint is never part of your dealership warranty program because the auto and coating industries are fully aware of the potential damage and have explicitly excluded all environmental damages from their vehicle warranty program. The development of Crystal Shield™ and Crystal Nano Shield™ is the solution for longlasting paintwork preservation from environment damage, at the same time, reduce the time & effort to maintain the automotive appearance by owners, giving them more time to enjoy their life and keeping the product green (non-toxic for vehicle scraping & recycling).

Crystal Shield™ Series creates a long-lasting Easy-to-Clean surface on your vehicle paintwork through innovative liquid glass (SiO2) nanotechnology which has been independently tested and scientifically proven. (More information at www.dclub.com.sg) • Crystal Shield™ and Crystal Nano Shield™ create a new crystallised surface that effectively shields dirt, dust, water and other environmental contaminants. • Crystal Shield™ and Crystal Nano Shield™ effectively prevent oxidation and UV induced degradation on the applied paintwork. It improves colour and gloss stability and the independent accelerated weathering test result showed 98% gloss retention after a weathering condition equivalent to 7.5 years. • The crystallised shield provides chemical, corrosion and stain resistance. It improves surface scratch resistance against washing marring with a pencil hardness of 8H. • Crystal Shield™ produces a deep candy gloss and Crystal Nano Shield™ produces a nice crystal gloss to the applied surface. • Water contact angle up to 110º have been measured on Crystal Shield™ series. (Contact angle is an evaluation method to determine how hydrophobic or hydrophilic the surface is). The higher contact angle, the easier it will be for the treated surface to be cleaned. • Smart spending. Crystal Shield™ series offer long-lasting durability that stretches your investment in preserving your automotive appearance as the crystallised shield become part of the paint system (covalent bonding). Little maintenance is required so you can spend your time enjoying your life. • Green product. Crystal Shield™ series products are non-toxic, therefore, will not cause any environmental or health issues when your vehicle is scrap and recycled. • Up to 10 years extended warranty will be provided by Dclub (Terms & Conditions apply).

s expected, nobody could hold a candle to the Red Bulls in Suzuka on Sunday afternoon as Sebastian Vettel led home team mate Mark Webber by nine-tenths of a second in a gripping race in which the five title contenders finished in the top five places. Vettel’s third triumph of the season, and Fernando Alonso’s third place for Ferrari, 1.8s behind Webber, moves the German into joint second place with the Spaniard, each on 206 points, as Webber moved out to 220 to extend his lead to 14. Jenson Button’s bold decision to qualify on the harder Bridgestone tyre

paid off with fourth place, after the Briton had run longer before pitting than his main rivals and led from Lap 26 until his stop on Lap 38. But fortune favoured him as he was able to catch and pass McLaren team mate Lewis Hamilton when the latter’s MP4-25 lost third gear around the 40-lap mark. Hamilton finished fifth and lies fourth overall with 192 points, Button fifth with 189. In the constructors’ stakes Red Bull moved even further ahead, with 426 points to McLaren’s 381 and Ferrari’s 334. The race began with a bang several of them, actually. Vitaly

Petrov didn’t quite clear slowstarting Nico Hulkenberg as they raced off the line, and the Renault was pitched into the wall to the left as he cut across the Williams. Then in the first corner Ferrari’s Felipe Massa made a wild run down the inside of Hulkenberg, before spearing across the road to crash into and take off very fast-starting Force India of Vitantonio Liuzzi on the outside of Turn One. Hulkenberg was also involved, so at a stroke four cars joined non-starter Lucas di Grassi, who had a huge shunt in 130R in his Virgin during his out lap on the way to the grid. Then, while the safety car controlled

the race for the first six laps, Robert Kubica’s brilliant start to run second, ahead of Webber, came to naught when he dropped out at the hairpin on the second lap when his Renault threw its right-rear wheel. Apart from Button’s intervention due to McLaren’s different strategy, Vettel had complete control of the race, keeping Webber’s challenge under control as the Australian in turn kept Alonso at bay. The two McLarens ran close behind them, and until Hamilton’s transmission problem the five title contenders were all closing up for what seemed like a dramatic finish. As Hamilton slowed, however, he let Button by at the Hairpin. Michael Schumacher inherited sixth place from Mercedes team mate Nico

Rosberg, who stopped early because of an accident damage-induced pit stop and then lost the left-rear wheel on the 48th lap. The two of them had been battling, nose to tail, for many laps. One of the heroes of the race was BMW Sauber’s Kamui Kobayashi, who did his usual energetic overtaking, mainly in the Hairpin, pit-stopped late, then caught and passed team mate Nick Heidfeld to take seventh ahead of the German despite sustaining damage wheel-rubbing his way past Toro Rosso’s Jaime Alguersuari. Heidfeld finished eighth, making it a fruitful day for BMW Sauber, having just fended off Rubens Barrichello’s Williams. Tenth seemed destined for Adrian Sutil until his Force India blew its Mercedes engine on Lap 44; he half spun in 130R on his way back to the pits. Thus Sebastien Buemi came through for the final point after Toro Rosso team mate Alguersuari had to make a late pit stop. The Spaniard finished 11th, ahead of Heikki Kovalainen who led Jarno Trulli home for a Lotus onetwo in the newbie stakes. Virgin’s Timo Glock came through to third eventually, and 14th overall. But for a long time Sakon Yamamoto was another hero with a gutsy drive where he stayed ahead of Trulli for a long while and Glock even longer until his tyre stop on Lap 32. Bruno Senna ultimately beat him, having made an early tyre stop, but Yamamoto brought his HRT home an honourable 16th behind him. |

errari’s Fernando Alonso scored one of the biggest wins of his career in a rain-affected Korean Grand Prix on Sunday afternoon, and a day of total disaster saw neither Red Bull driver finish. Mark Webber crashed out early while running second, and Sebastian Vettel’s engine blew up as he was leading on the 46th lap. The result puts Alonso into an 11-point championship lead over Webber, 231 to 220, with just two races left. As dusk fell and the race was just completed before the two-hour cut-off point, what had begun as impending disaster for Korean race

organisers turned instead into a brilliant triumph. But it was edgy. After the rain got heavier just before the start, the race was red-flagged after just two laps had been run behind the safety car. That led to a lengthy delay until it was resumed as conditions got marginally better, but after the restart at 16.05 the safety car continued to lead the field for another 15 laps before racing finally began on the 18th. Vettel sprinted into the lead from Webber with Alonso third and Mercedes GP’s Nico Rosberg deposing McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton for fourth. But then Webber spun and hit the wall in Turn 13 on the 19th lap, collecting Rosberg. Out came the safety car again until Lap 24, whereupon Vettel resumed control ahead of Alonso and Hamilton. After their pit stops between Laps 31 and 32, Hamilton jumped Alonso for second as the Spaniard had a minor delay due to arriving slightly sideways and making it difficult for mechanics to reach the right front wheel, but they were racing under the safety car again after Toro Rosso’s Sebastien Buemi had taken out Virgin’s Timo

Glock on the 31st under braking for Turn Three. As racing resumed on the 35th lap, Hamilton ran wide in Turn One as his front wheels were locking, handing second back to Alonso. And that’s how it seemed likely to stay as Vettel built a lead of 2.7s by Lap 41. But then Alonso and Hamilton began to move in, and going into Turn One on Lap 46 the Ferrari dived inside the Red Bull to take the lead. On the exit to the corner Vettel’s engine blew, and as Mark Webber breathed a sigh of some relief, Red Bull had their head in their hands. Now it was Alonso’s race to lose, but though Hamilton gave it everything he had, annihilating the Ferrari in the first two sectors, Alonso was able to make it all back in the final one. Towards the end Hamilton dropped back, keeping a

Fernando Alonso “It is a great feeling winning this way, as it was a very difficult victory, given the track conditions. Especially at the start, the situation on track and in terms of visibility was really precarious. That was the most worrying time, because I knew it would be an achievement just to stay on the track. We had never driven here in the wet and so there was no reference point. Webber’s retirement slightly changed our approach because, all in all, it would have been sufficient to finish on the podium without taking too many risks. The final stages were particularly difficult because half the track was almost dry and the tyres were getting ruined really quickly. I witnessed both Red Bull problems from very close up: in these situations you try and stay super-concentrated, because you are coming from a high speed corner and there is no time to think. Clearly, this was a great help for our championship chances, but luck proves that Formula 1 is not just about the maths! If you then think about what happened at races such as Valencia and Silverstone, you can really say that what goes around comes around. Now there are still 50 points up for grabs: Red Bull are still favourite, but we will continue to do our utmost and try to always get onto the podium. The car has improved so much in the second half of the year thanks to continuous updates: maybe we have come away with more than we expected, but we know the situation can change from one weekend to the next. All the same, these results are fully deserved by the team and my dream is to see everyone in it happy…”

Lewis Hamilton “At the start, I just wanted to get out there. I love racing, and I thought it was safe enough - 17 laps spent running behind the Safety Car isn’t good for the spectators, and it’s not fun for the drivers either. Additionally, I felt it had easily dried up enough for us to start racing - so I’m glad we did. It was very tricky out there, particularly at the end. It was pitch black, I couldn’t see much and my tyres were finished. It was a big surprise to see both Red Bulls go out. Fernando (Alonso) drove really well, but I’m very happy to have scored some points after a couple of disappointing races. However, ours still isn’t the fastest car: I was losing a lot of time to Fernando, particularly in the final sector. But I’m sure we’ll be working flat-out to fix that back at the McLaren Technology Centre before we head to Brazil. We’ve got two races ahead of us - we have more coming for the car, and the guys back at the factory are doing a great job. Everyone is really enthusiastic and is pushing as hard as they can. The championship definitely isn’t out of reach - we can still do this.”

Fernando Alonso scored one of the biggest wins of his career in a rain-affected Korean Grand Prix. badly worn right front intermediate tyre alive, and was 14.9s adrift as a delighted Alonso took his fifth win of the year and his 26th overall. The day was also a disaster for the fifth title contender Jenson Button, who lacked Hamilton’s pace as he suffered brake problems and was taken off the road at one stage by Force India’s Adrian Sutil, who was involved in five other incidents in an adventurous afternoon. Button’s McLaren sustained some damage, and that and his brake problems limited him to a 12th place finish.

With 189 points he is almost out of the title fight. Felipe Massa made it a great day for Ferrari and boosted their once flagging hopes in the constructors’ championship, by taking a distant third place ahead of Michael Schumacher, who had his best race of the year to fourth place in the second Mercedes. Red Bull still lead that, with 426 points, but McLaren now have 399 and Ferrari are back in the hunt with 374.

motorsports The race was also a disaster for Williams, who had Rubens Barrichello and Nico Hulkenberg running fifth and sixth with five laps to go, but then the latter had to pit for fresh tyres on Lap 51, and the former got sideways and lost places to Renault’s Robert Kubica and Tonio Liuzzi on Lap 52. The Brazilian’s moment ruined the Italian’s chances of fighting the Pole, on whom he had been closing in his Force India after a superb drive, but sixth place was a great fillip for a man who is frequently underrated. Barrichello recovered to take seventh, ahead of the BMW Saubers of Kamui Kobayashi and Nick Heidfeld, and Hulkenberg recovered to snatch the final point from Toro Rosso’s Jaime Alguersuari on the last lap. Force

India thus have 68 points, with Williams right behind on 65. Behind Button, Lotus’s Heikki Kovalainen survived a bruising race, having initially fought Glock’s speedy Virgin until Buemi tapped him into a spin. His was the first new team car home, in a valuable 13th place, ahead of the HRTs of Bruno Senna (who was hit early on by Jarno Trulli’s Lotus) and Sakon Yamamoto. Sutil was the first non-finisher, having spun on Lap 29, then had incidents with Button and Kobayashi, run wide in Turn One and lost a place to Alguersuari, then hit Kobayashi and brought about his own retirement on the 47th lap with damaged front suspension. Behind Vettel, Vitaly Petrov went off in a sizeable accident on the 40th lap, trashing another Renault R30, while Glock looked

Felipe Massa “A great result at the end of a very difficult race. I am very pleased, for myself and for the team. Fernando did a great job. After two poor weekends, I am happy to have stepped up onto the podium once again. I also want to thank the race director who did an excellent job of managing the situation, making the right decisions as to when to start the race and when to bring in the Safety Car at the right moment. By the end, it was almost dark and the intermediate tyres were deteriorating, especially the rears: there is a light on the steering wheel which is very bright and in these conditions it was quite distracting. We were a bit lucky, but we also did a good job, proving to be competitive even on this track. How will things go in Interlagos and Abu Dhabi? It’s hard to say, as the two tracks are very different one to the other. It will be important to have a car capable of fighting for a podium place and then try not to make any mistakes.”

#4

Michael Schumacher "I am pretty happy with today's race and I have to say thank you to my team who guided me perfectly through the afternoon. I am sure that the spectators had a lot of fun here today at this first Korean race. The FIA did very well to start the race behind the safety car as it absolutely would not have been possible to have a racing start. The only shame for us today was that Nico was put out of the race otherwise we would have seen a very good weekend for our team."

#5

Robert Kubica “Fifth place means good points for the team and it's a good reward for all our efforts this weekend. It was a long, difficult race - and a race of two halves. The first part was very tricky for me, because I had big problems warming up the tyres. I had no grip at all and couldn't push - I was just concentrating on keeping the car on the track. For the second half, though, I think it was very good. It was important to look after the intermediate tyres and keep them in as good shape as possible, to get the benefit in the final laps. That was when I managed to gain a lot of positions, which meant everything turned out pretty well in the end.”

a likely new team winner until Buemi’s assault eliminated them both. With Di Grassi getting shortbraked by an HRT and crashing into a tyre wall, what at one time looked like a promising race for Virgin as Glock ran 13th early on soon became a major disappointment. The world championship fight is still raging, but now the odds are beginning to swing in Ferrari’s favour. |

Casio Edifice Watches

The Edifice of F1 Casio Computer Co. Ltd. has recently launched five additions to its Edifice brand of full metal analog watches. The new line of EF-550 watches features an innovative shield piece in the center of the face giving the new additions a unique and dynamic chronograph look. Capturing the essence of Formula 1’s speed and intelligence, Edifice analog metal watches evoke a sense of velocity and motor sports energy with the movement of the hands and distinctive face of the watch. The high-performance stopwatch function and sophisticated face designs make Edifice watches especially popular with motor sports fans. The new EF-550 watches feature a bold shield piece in the center of the face cleverly designed to represent a car engine cover. At the 3-o’clock position, a disk-shaped indicator and a metal part evoke the image of a car wheel and disc brake. This dynamic chronograph look expresses the energy and motor sports velocity that Edifice is known for. The disk-shaped indicator rotates according to the time: from 6 am to 6 pm it is colored in either red or blue (depending on the model), and it turns to white for the

other 12 hours, visually representing day and night. The watch also features a retrograde chronograph, accurate to 1/20th of a second, at the 6-o’clock position. The small hand ticks left and right during chronograph operation for the first 60 seconds. Meanwhile, the large chronograph measurement buttons, the large screw-lock crowns engraved with the brand logo, and the metal body with button guards which prevent operation errors or malfunction, all combine to reinforce the watch’s functional strength. The design evokes the mechanical image of motor sports, together with a watch face that conveys a sense of speed. The new lineup features five models including the EF-550D (2 models) with solid stainless steel bands, the EF-550 with a resin band, and the EF-550PB (2 models) featuring black ion plating on the case. Casio and Red Bull Racing Casio has been an official partner of the Red Bull Racing Formula 1 team since 2009, a dynamic team of drivers who are ideal brand ambassadors for the Edifice concept.

AutoSaver: REV-1 Lubricants

Rev It Up! The automotive engine oil market is already saturated with a sea of “me-too” lubricants, each claiming to outdo one another, which sometimes makes buying the right oil for your car when it comes to servicing your car a mind-boggling exercise in research and comparisons. The Wheels Asia team is committed to featuring the best products on our market, and this month we turn the spotlight onto REV-1 Lubricants available at all AutoSaver branches; a homegrown brand that not matches the major players in performance, but even exceeded our expectations in what a automotive lubricant should do as well! Blended in Singapore, REV-1 has been sold here since 2002 and has since garnered a strong following of drivers. But all this wasn’t just by chance; the lubricants have undergone

rigorous testing to adhere to the highest international quality standards, which enabled them to achieve continued growth even in the highly competitive automotive lubricant market. Coupled with stringent product specifications, which allow REV-1 oils to be absolutely consistent throughout, assuring customers that every single batch of lubricant bought has been strictly tested in accordance to ASTM standards. REV-1 is distributed in Singapore by AutoSaver and its extensive network of franchisee outlets and branches throughout Singapore. With an ever increasing lineup of quality products that are recognized by countless motorists, fleet managers and industrial administrators as one of the best and most cost-effective choice for increasing engine performance, reducing maintenance and prolonging vehicle and equipment life. It’s no wonder hundreds of motorists are already flocking to AutoSaver outlets islandwide when it comes to servicing their cars not just because of the excellent service and professionalism but also because of REV-1!

Besides serving up quality engine oils like REV-1, AutoSaver has been long renowned as an excellent alternative place to service your car especially for Toyota, nissan and honda owners. By strictly following guidelines according to the car owner’s manual, AutoSaver carries out periodical maintenance service on your car, protecting its warranty at the same time. Drivers will also get to enjoy a transparent pricing system, standard procedures and friendly technicians whom will deliver AutoSaver’s promise of a Peace of Mind. In addition, the value packages and innovative products available at each outlet of AutoSaver will cater to the most discerning of drivers. Whether you have purchased a new or pre-owned car, AutoSaver and REV-1 are committed to making sure your car delivers more years of driving pleasure and reliability.

TESTIMonIALS fRoM fRAnChISEES ABouT REV-1 “Even before I started working at AutoSaver, I was already using REV-1 lubricants and I must say over the years it has improved a lot together with an increased range of products. I’m quite satisfied about the overall performance of the oil as its been specially blended for VVT-i Toyota engines. And now their lineup has expanded to include mineral, performance and diesel lubricants too. Cars serviced with REV-1 show dramatic improvement especially with the Performance series, which is equivalent or better than the established brands. Their current range of oils will continue to lubricate and protect your engine even after 10,000km before the next servicing is needed. As for my customers, they generally share the same feedback as I do, with the majority of them already been very satisfied

with the mid to lower range of lubricants from the REV-1 lineup. Those that have tried the Performance variant couldn’t be any happier with the improvements as its really good and affordably priced!” - Wilson Goh, Manager (AutoSaver Toh Guan Branch) “I personally tried the 30 Series of REV-1 oils and found them to be very fuel efficient when it comes to mileage, older cars can use the 40 and 50 lubricants that will offer better protection for older engines. At my branch, REV-1 oil is the most popular brand of choice for owners of the major brands, which we cater to. Sales of REV-1 account for 50-60% of total sales of my branch; its price is really value for money.

The 30W oils will definitely improve your mileage as thinner oil is more suited for newer engines. The Performance range will perform as well as the best oils in the market but cost a lot lesser than any of them. And the fact that REV1 Lubricants come EPA certified is guarantee that every product is manufactured under the strictest of quality control. - Spencer Wong, Operations (Kaki Bukit Branch)

Reigning Porsche Carrera Cup Asia champion Christian Menzel of Team StarChase strengthened his 2010 title defence by taking a lights-to-flag victory in Round 10 at the 4.603km configuration of the Shanghai International Circuit. n the Class B category, Team PCS Racing driver Mok Weng Sun was also celebrating, having locked up the Class title and extending his winning streak to 10 races. Having taken pole position as well as the win for Saturday’s Round 9, Menzel now leads the overall championship by nine points with just two races remaining of the 2010 season. With just 41 points on offer, four drivers are still in contention for the championship: Menzel; Team PCS Racing’s Craig Baird; Red Bull Racing’s Marchy Lee; and Mok. Said Menzel: “We won again today and that’s a good feeling, especially because we are in a better position in the championship. The championship situation is tricky. We are now nine points ahead of Craig. This sounds good, but remember me in Singapore? One wrong position and you lose all the points. I will fly to Zhuhai with the same procedure as always. We want to concentrate and to do good work.” Joining Menzel on the Round 10 podium was LKM Racing driver Darryl O’Young of Hong Kong, who finished 9.091 seconds behind the German, with New Zealander

Lee finished fourth, while Team Jebsen driver Rodolfo Avila rounded out the top five. “I started very good off the line,” O’Young said about his race. “I was inside Christian, but he had more grip on the outside. I tried my best to hold on and we touched a bit, but he held me well from the outside and there was nothing I could do. I switched to rain tyres after the warm-up lap but I think that was a mistake because it didn’t get up temperature, so in the first two laps it was like nothing. Once I got the temperature up, the car felt much better. I got away from Craig, but challenging Christian was impossible.” In Class B, Mok’s rival Ringo Chong of Team Kangshun finished second, while J2M Racing’s JeanMarc Merlin of France was third. “The win is fantastic and we also sealed the championship,” said Mok, who won his first Class B title in 2007. “The team told me this morning just to try to chase the guys in front and that’s what I tried to do today. Make sure I finish the race and keep the perfect record.” Although the clouds stayed away during the race, the track was still wet from rain earlier in the morning. Starting from pole, Menzel pulled away, with O’Young behind him. Starting from fifth on the grid, Baird leapt into third place at the start, passing Avila and Lee. On the

But in true Thai fashion, the event wasn’t all about cars, the festival included a Honda Fun Park for those that brought along their families to share in the festivities. These included a water theme park, go-kart rides and many more!

And of course what racing event would be complete with the throngs of charming race queens? Honda Racing Fest definitely didn’t disappoint, as the various tuning houses brought along their representatives much to the delight of the attendees and photographers alike! The day ended with a concert fronted by the sensation band, Berry Bakery, an ultra popular band from Thailand. |

With Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports present at the Opening Ceremony, Andre Leong, Project Director of METTLE GAMES declared the Games open to much fanfare. The atmosphere was made

even more exciting during the Ceremony as demonstrations by professional skateboarder Aquil Brathwaite, BMX bikers Kiattichai Wanitsakun and Ng Chee Keong, and aggressive inline skaters Leon Humphries and Oli Benet enthralled the crowd. “We are honoured to have Dr. Balakrishnan present at this momentous occasion. to play host to so many great competitors. We wish them all the best over the next two weekends, said Andre Leong, Project Director of METTLE GAMES. METTLE GAMES was held at five locations all over the island. Weekend One lasts until 31 October and is held at Xtreme SkatePark @ East Coast and SKI360. Weekend Two takes place from 5-7 November and will be at Pit Building and the Singapore Flyer. In addition, the International FLOW (Flowriding League Of the World) Championships, organised by Wave House Sentosa, is held in conjunction with METTLE GAMES. To date, the inaugural METTLE GAMES has attracted 500 participants and demonstrators from more than 10 countries, including the United States of America (USA), the Netherlands, France, Spain, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand.

Weekend One of METTLE GAMES kicks things off with an array of five world class tournaments. Sanctioned by the Asian Extreme Sports Federation (AXF), the aggressive inline skating, skateboarding and bicycle motocross (BMX) events will take place at Xtreme SkatePark @ East Coast. International ranking points from the World Rolling Series are also up for grabs in the aggressive inline skating tournament. Nearby at SKI360, the cable wakeboarding tournament will see international competitors such as Dutch World Champion Denise De Haan take on local favourites Max and Sasha Christian. The event is sanctioned by the International Waterski & Wakeboard Federation (IWWF). Professional demonstrators include skateboarders Jereme Rogers and Aquil Brathwaite from the United States of America, Asian X Games BMX silver medallist Kiattichai Wanitsakun

from Thailand and the X-mini Ambassadors from Spain, the United Kingdom and Thailand, who will be conducting daily demonstrations at Xtreme SkatePark @ East Coast. To mark the opening weekend of METTLE GAMES, there was a METTLE GAMES Welcome Party at Wave House Sentosa from 7pm. With a guest-list that included competitors, demonstrators, action sports fans and partygoers, the Welcome Party will be a fixture to remember on the nightlife circuit. Weekend two, which was held from 5-7 November 2010, comprised of competitions in wakeboarding, drag car racing, super motard racing, cub racing, Muay Thai and boxing. Held at the F1 Pit Building, the tournaments were sanctioned by the IWWF, the Singapore Motorsports Sports Association (SMSA) and the World Muay Thai Council (WMC).

Professional demonstrations for Weekend Two include an ascent of the Singapore Flyer by Alain Robert the French SpiderMan and car stunts by precision driver Russ Swift from the United

Kingdom. There was a also drift demonstrations by Japan’s drift champion Ryuji Miki, Malaysia’s ‘drift princess’ Ashley Wong and Singapore’s very own Falken Team. Members of the public got a chance to take a ride in the car as Ryuji Miki and Russ Swift perform, giving them a first-hand taste of the action.

Another highlight of Weekend Two is the METTLE GAMES’ collaboration with the Make-AWish Foundation®. In a bid to grant the wishes of youths with life threatening diseases, Ryuji Miki met and ferried youths from Make-A-Wish. Four youths performed at SG Stomping, a rock concert held at METTLE GAMES. Rounding off the programme for Weekend Two were fringe activities such as SG Stomping, which showcased some of the best bands that Singapore has to offer. METTLE GAMES marks the first time a large-scale lifestyle action sports event combines water, street and motoring sports in one offering. |

Livin’ Loud Car fanatics are a strange bunch, devoted to their rides like it was part of them, the connection between car and petrolhead is so deeply rooted it can’t be described in words. Many people can’t fathom why anyone in their right mind would still want a 20year old car that’s even older than the driver sometimes. But us in the motoring industry fully know why, it's not just the shape of the car you drive, it's not the engine either, in fact it's not even the feeling you get when you are behind the wheel. It’s the experience, the connection you derive when you and your

ride are one. Perhaps this is why, so many of us till now are still not driving our dream cars or are in the process of working towards it. An excellent example would be Marcus’ track-ready monster or a FD Civic. Starting life out as a rather normal 2.0L Si, its owner has spent a tonne of money and effort to turn it into the Type-R chomping beast you see before your eyes today. Call it an affinity as to why Marcus chose the standard 2.0L to tune up instead of a Type-R, which would be best left to ask the man himself but today the star is of course his ride, a machine that’s pushing out over

Marcus’ Honda Civic

300bhp! That’s already forced-induced territory, but the car remains naturally aspirated! Let’s find out how! To whip out 333 ponies and 247Nm of twist from the K20 is no small feat, a DC5R Engine Head Ported with Valve Angles and SuperTech Oversize Valves were sourced, together with BluePrint Racing Valve Spring & Titanium Retainers, Web Cam High Profile Camshafts, RDX Denso 410cc Injectors, TWM 56MM (Bored) Carbon Fibre Individual Throttle Body, TWM Fuel Rail, Wiseco High Compression Pistons, Blueprint Racing I Con Rods, Cometic Head Gasket, ACL Con Rod Bearing and Crank Bearing, Moomba Racing Engine Mountings, FD2R Oil Pump, R-Crew Racing Race Header, Uber Garage 3 Inch Argon Welding Exhaust with Matola Muffler Box, Earl’s Racing Oil Cooler, Mishimoto Silicon Radiator Hose, Cusco Oil Catch Tank

Arospeed Sensor Adaptor and finally Hondata Intake Manifold Gasket to round up the enhancements to the engine bay area. Transmission wise, Macrus opted for an OS Giken Twin Plate Racing Clutch and a DC5R 6-speed Gearbox coupled to a Kaaz 1.5 way LSD with Custom Close Ratio 5,6 Gearings. Bringing the Civic to a halt are AP Racing 6 Pot Brakes, AP Racing 2 Piece Floating Slotted Rotors, AP Racing High Temp APF401 Brake Pads and App Stainless Steel Braided Hoses. Now having all that power won’t cut it if your car can only go straight and not much else, Marcus ensured the Civic could take any corner with a barrage of handling and stabilizing addons like an Alutec Racing Front Strut Bar, Alutec Racing Rear Strut Bar, J’s Racing Room Bar, J’s Racing Rear A Pillar Bar, Cusco Front 2 point Strut Bar, Cusco Rear 2 point Strut Bar,

Cusco Mid 4 Point Strut Bar, Cusco Front Anti Roll Bar, Progress Rear Anti Roll Bar, Ultra Racing Side Bars, BuddyClub Racing Suspension, Hardrace front camber kit, Skunk2 Rear Camber Kit and lined with Teflon Bushings. On the outside, to further distance his ride from the garden variety of Civics on our streets, Marcus chose a Mugen RR Wide Bodykit With Carbon Fibre Trims, Customized Rear Vented Bumper, Carbon Fibre Vented Bonnet, Carbon Fibre Vented Fenders, Carbon Fibre Number Plates, Carbon Fibre Front Grill, Carbon Fibre Side Skirts, Carbon Fibre Door Handles, Carbon Fibre Door guards, Carbon Fibre Door Pillar Trim, Carbon Fibre Fuel Cover, Carbon Fibre Boot, Carbon Fibre Reaar Splitters, Carbon Fibre Front Splitter Rods, C-West Racing Carbon Fibre Mirrors, J’s Racing Carbon Fibre GT-Wing and Custom Carbon Fibre Mirror Plate. |
