loy krathong 2014

by Ms alicia warner, marketing officer

Family, culture and community spirit – these are just some of the driving forces at The Regent’s International School Bangkok. Loy Krathong saw us successfully celebrate all three entities as the whole school gathered together for a beautiful night.

event and real insight into Thai culture for our new Principal, Mr. Peter Hogan. He paid great testament to its success and stated, “school events help to define the sort of place we are and create firm (fond) memories among students”.

It was evident that both time and heart had gone into the event. The performances were wonderfully executed and it was a pleasure to see our students be able to share their hard work with all the families in attendance.

One parent warmly shared their experience and said “I think the participation in this kind of event gives [the students] a great opportunity to learn and cherish Thai culture and tradition. And this lovely memory remains in their mind always, accumulating and broadening their beautiful experiences of their lives.

Our students demonstrated true talent and a sense of cameraderie with responsibility as they took to the stage to sing, dance or act. Noppamas contestants wowed the audience with their impressive Thai traditional costumes and displayed impressive public speaking skills – many of whom had never previously taken to a stage. The evening of firsts didn’t stop at our students, however, as Loy Krathong was the first whole school

I deeply appreciate you, all the teachers and the school staff for the preparation and the realization of this wonderful event tirelessly.” Until our next whole school celebration, congratulations to everyone that contributed to making this such a special night.

A note of thanks from parents: “Thank you for Loy Krathong” Dear Mrs. Rachel Perkins,

We were so pleased to receive this wonderful message of thanks that we had to share it. These events are for the whole community so it’s wonderful to hear from you!

I would like to congratulate you for the great success of the Regent's Loy Krathong Festival held on Fri. 14 Nov. Unfortunately and regrettably, my husband and I could not attend the event due to an previous engagement. However, according to the person who participated in our place, told me that he was very much entertained with lots of shows and contests along with nicely decorated guest tables and many food stalls which enhanced the festive atmosphere. The floating Krathongs in the swimming pool seemed a quite fun process for the children. My son was practicing his dance at home, which I found so elegant. After the event, he came to me, saying "I was so so nervous but I did well. Some mother offered me and my classmates cotton candy and popcorn." He seemed to enjoy his time with friends beyond the routine class hours and was satisfied with his accomplishment of performance. I think the particiation in this kind of event gives them a great opportunity to learn and cherish Thai culture and tradition. And this lovely memory remains in their mind always, accumulating and broadening their beautiful experiences of their lives. I deeply appreciate you, all the teachers and the school staff for the preparation and the realisation of this wonderful event tirelessly. Sincerely, Akiko El Housni

Lexia Reading and Symphony Maths Awards

by Teresa Watson, Learning Support coordinator/ Gifted and Talented coordinator

With the International pillar we are learning about different celebrations that happen around the world. for Democracy we have a vote of which story to be read at the end of the day, learning that the majority win! For Environmental pillar we save electricity by turning off lights when we leave a room and to close doors. For Adventure we use the primary play ground equipment. Leadership...we have a classleader for the day and for service we collected rice and money to support a charity! As you can see we are learning so much about Round Square and Captain IDEALS is our hero!

Our first set of Awards were given last week for students who have completed a level in their Lexia Reading or Symphony Maths online studies. Some students use these programmes in class or as a part of our after school activities programme. All students can log on at home to practice and improve their skills. Our school is using the Lexia Reading software programme to help students practice and develop fundamental reading skills. As an added benefit, you can install Lexia Reading at home to extend your child’s practice time. In an Internet browser, go to www.lexialearning.com. • Click Downloads in the upper-right hand corner. • Accept the license agreement. • Click the Lexia Reading button. • Click the version you want to download from the United Kingdom, Installation instructions are available in the middle of the page. • You will need the customer code 0025-7624-1461-

0556 to install the software. Lexia reading also has an app for iPad, IPad mini in the App store or Android tablets in the Google Play store. Students can also play Symphony Maths at home by loging onto www.mysymphonymath.com. Our school account number is 4185. If you have any questions or if you child is unsure of their user name or password please contact Mrs. Watson at teresa.watson@regents.ac.th

Year 2 at Siam Ocean World

by mr paul Ferrandino, Year 2 Teacher On Thursday 30th October, the whole of Year 2 went on a wonderful trip to Siam Ocean World. Year 2 had been learning all about the sea and its wildlife, as well was the importance of the sea in our global environment. We set off at 8:30 am really excited knowing that we would get to see lots of amazing underwater wildlife along with the excitement of Mrs Perkins coming on the trip with us! Once we got there we not disappointed as we had our own guide who explained all the different fish and wildlife to us. We also got to go on a glass bottomed boat which gave us a different perspective of the enormous water tank. Once we had walked through all the amazing exhibits, we stopped and had lunch in front of the shark tank and watched in awe as divers fed the large sharks their lunch!

science day

by Mr paul farrandino, primary science coordinator

On Wednesday 19th November we held our annual Science Day. It’s a day of fun which allows the children to celebrate and exhibit their wonderful science skills to each other. The day started with the children presenting their science investigations, which they carried out at home, to their classmates. Their teachers then picked a winner based on a series of criteria, ranging from the investigative process to their scientific understanding of their investigation. The class winners then got to deliver their presentations to myself, Mrs Perkins, Mrs Vansoh and our Principal, Mr Hogan! Using the same criteria we chose a winner for the Years 1 & 2, Years 3 & 4 and Years 5 & 6. The winners were: Peem in 2B, Thatha in 3V and Bless in 5T. We then had our annual house science challenge competitions. The Year 1 & 2 houses had to build and make balloon rockets which were raced at our end of day assembly. The Year 3 & 4 houses had to build a bridge using straws which would allow a remote control car to be driven across it. The Year 5 & 6 children had to design and make a helmet which would protect a water filled balloon when

dropped from a height of 2 metres. House points were given out throughout the day for investigations, presentations and how well the challenges performed! At the end of the day all the house points were added together and the house with the most points was declared the Science Fair Champions for this year! This year the accolade went to the Green Crocodiles! In the middle of all this we also had a very exciting visit from Mr Jones, a physics teacher from our secondary school. He talked to us about gases all around us, especially the three main gases that we have in the world. Not only did he talk about them but he also showed us some amazing cool experiments, using Hydrochloric Acid, Dry ice (frozen carbon dioxide) and a helium balloon explosion! It was a very fun day! We would also like to thank all the parents who brought in card, paper, plastics and other materials which allowed us to carry out our challenges. Thank you all!

The Primary library was full of science books!
