WORLD FOOD DAY

PRE-PREP NEWS

Dear Parent, I was delighted to welcome all the children back to school this week after our half term holiday. They all looked very well rested and ready to return to their learning. Before the holiday the children and staff experienced a poor man/rich man lunch on World Food Day and the Mercy Centre came to collect hundreds of bags of rice for their community. The children learnt a valuable lesson that day and many said that they now truly understood what it must feel like to be poor and how we must try and help people less fortunate than ourselves. This week I have witnessed a group of students attending the Inter-school Spelling Bee Competition

and the feedback from Mrs Noble and Mr Rumple who supported the children was very positive. The children represented the school perfectly and I am very proud of their achievements. Year 1 and 2 have undertaken their educational visits to Ocean World and Safari World which links closely with their CCS topics. I was fortunate enough to join the Year 2s on their trip and was very impressed by their behaviour. To complete a very busy week I was delighted to see so many children and parents joining in with our Spooky Halloween Day, we will have lots of photos in the next newsletter. Have a wonderful weekend. With best wishes,

Mrs Rachel Perkins

World Food Day

By ms lucy golland, round square coordinator

On Thursday 16th October it was World Food Day and for two weeks running up to the event we saw both the collection of rice to be donated to the Mercy Centre and the drawing of the much coveted ‘Golden Tickets.’ Twenty lucky people won tickets and were able to sit at a large table and gorge themselves on a variety of foods, whilst everyone else sat on the floor with a banana leaf plate of sticky rice and water. This hopefully reminded the children that not everyone in the world is as lucky as we are and only get to eat a bowl of rice every day, and some days not even that. As well as sending this message across to the children, we also managed to collect a staggering 600kgs of rice for the Mercy Centre to help children who live in the slums of Bangkok. Thank you again to all those that donated rice to help those less fortunate than ourselves.

Numicon in pre-prep

By ms helen normoyle, reception teacher

By ms eleri davies, early years coordinator

In Reception we are making models of our own homes using junk materials. We thought carefully about the shapes we should use and how to fix the different parts of our buildings together. We will be painting them soon to make them as realistic as possible. We held a “show and tell” session to describe our models to the rest of the class.

We have been having great fun learning with ‘Numicon’. Mr Jarrett our Maths Coordinator has provided us with the ‘Numicon’ to help support our learning and understanding of Mathematical concepts.

Year 1 and 2 Painting club

By ms gemma james, KS1 coordinator/Year 1 Teacher

This term we have been exploring different painting and drawing techniques in Art club. We have made portraits, undersea scenes, bubble painting and created spooky ghost pictures. It has been such great, messy fun! We have watched the TV programme “Mister Maker “ which is a UK art based TV series for children for some inspirational ideas. Try clicking the video below or following the link to do bubble painting yourselves. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mGHEUiw2krQ

interschool spelling bee

by Ms joya noble and mr nathan rumble, literacy coordinator and eal teacher On Tuesday 28th of October twelve students from The Regent's Prep and Secondary School set out for the Interschool Spelling Bee. It was an exciting competition, with over 150 students participating from across Bangkok. Our students, it must be said, represented their school in an extremely positive way. They interacted with other students in a friendly and polite manner, they demonstrated a high level of spelling strategies, and all spoke clearly and confidently in a high-pressure environment. Two of our Year 4 and 5 students made it through to the 'Knock-Out' round, and three of our Year 6 and 7 students made this level also. It was our first year for participating at an Inter-School level, and our students performed well and made the supporting teachers very proud.

Animal Sponsorship

By Ms lucy golland, round square coordinator

ENVIRONMENT

At the beginning of term the Student Council had the fantastic idea to help out endangered animals around the world. We decided that each Year Group could bid for money from the Round Square fund to sponsor an animal. The week before half term we saw the presentations from each year group to bid for the money. The Student Council listened carefully to each presentation and then met to discuss whether it was a worthwhile charity to sponsor. On the Thursday before half term they delivered the good news to all the students that their bids had been successful. A special mention was given to both Year 2 and Year 4 for the way their presentation was delivered. We will now organise for the money to be sent to the different charities and then later on in the year each year group will present during assemblies all the information they have found out about their animals and their sponsorship programme.

Even our library supported Animal conservation week by stocking up on animal related books!

Violin Success By Phraewa Saengaroon, year 6 student During half term I entered the Osaka Violin international Competition in Japan. I have been trying for three years to audition in Thailand and this year I was successful to go to the competition. It was very hard for me to practice due to it needing to have accuracy, perfect sound and correct rhythm. At the final round in Osaka, I competed with very good competitors who came from many countries. They had a lots of good techniques, good preparation and everyone had very strong skills. I got a lot of experience from this competition. I will practice more over the next year and try to improve my skills to made my future successful. I am planning to enter again in the future.

splash down

By anurag, gap staff

After a great start to the year, the boarders went on their well-deserved half-term holiday to Rayong. Before we hit the sun and sand, we took a small detour to visit a small day care centre that was doing amazing charity work. For the majority of the children who parents work in construction, their daily lives are confined to a small congregated iron house with minimal space and close to no ventilation. The Sanuk centre offers these children food, education, a place to have fun and be themselves. The centre is run through the dedicated work of volunteers and generous donation of the local business owners. The boarders spent the day helping the volunteers entertain the children. The children and the boarders were split into 3 groups with one group heading for the beach, another went for a dip in the swimming pool while one group created cards that the children could sell at the markets to buy toys and other items. The day was a massive success and the boarders left tired and many were moved by the poor living standard. The Regent’s Boarding community is certain to continue our support of the Sanuk centre and its volunteers and we look forward to visiting again.

After a week of relaxing on the beach or by the pool, our very tanned boarders took a small detour on the way home to visit Splash Down. Located in Pattaya, Splash Down is a water park that offers many water based obstacles and challenges. The Boarders spent 4 hours jumping, sliding, falling and splashing. The most popular of the attractions was by far the bouncing balls. This challenge proved just too technical for our boarding cohort but watching those attempt them was enjoyable enough.

Afternoon Activities students keep busy in the afternoon with a variety of activities, including hockey, rugby and horse riding.
