2014-15 Academic Profile

Regents School of Austin is a college preparatory, co-educational, independent, liberal arts, K-12 day school that was founded in 1992 on the classical, Christian educational model. Total enrollment is 1001 students with the School of Rhetoric (grades 9-12) having a student population of 300 students. The senior class numbers 71. Financial aid is distributed to 25% of the SOR student body. The matriculation rate to four-year colleges for the Class of 2014 was 96% and 4% will attend a two-year college. The primary objective of the School of Rhetoric is to teach students to think critically and to articulate clearly and persuasively the knowledge they acquire in a variety of disciplines. The student/faculty ratio is 9:1 and the average class size is 14. All faculty members are degreed in their respective disciplines with over 75% having advanced degrees in their subject area.

Accreditation/Memberships

Regents School of Austin is accredited by the Association of Classical Christian Schools. Memberships include the Association of College Counselors in Independent Schools, the National Association of College Admissions Counseling, the Texas Association of College Admission Counseling, and the College Board.

The Harkness Table

The Harkness Table plays a central role in the experience of a Regents student. An oval table that seats 17 students is the centerpiece in each of the Humanities classrooms. The Harkness table places students at the center of the learning process and encourages them to articulate and support their ideas and to learn from one another. At Regents 50% of a student’s efforts are focused on discussion primarily at the Harkness Table, while the other 50% are focused on writing.

Laser Optics Lab

Regents offers state of the art science labs, including a college-level laser optics lab found in few high schools in the country.

Science and Nature Center

This 10 acre sanctuary includes a 40,000 gallon pond, herb, vegetable, and butterfly gardens, an amphitheatre, and a variety of farm animals. The facility provides a living forum for learning and is available to students and faculty for experiments involving plant, animal and pond life.

Class Trips

Freshmen and sophomores participate in a service project for a week in the spring. Juniors culminate their three years of ancient, classical, medieval and modern European humanities studies with an academic trip to London, Paris, Florence, and Rome, after which they write a major research paper on one of the places or artifacts they encountered.

Senior Thesis

A graduation requirement for all Regents students, the Senior Thesis involves researching, writing, and presenting an original argument on a controversial subject. In the last month of school, seniors present and defend their theses before a panel of experts, peers, and members of the local community. Students work under the direction of their Rhetoric instructor, an Oratio instructor, and a thesis advisor, building on a study of rhetoric that begins with Socrates’ dialectical inquiry about the nature of knowledge (epistemology), reality (metaphysics), and goodness (ethics), and continues through Plato, Aristotle, Cicero, and Quintilian. By studying the five Canons of Rhetoric, students learn to persuasively express value judgments, and through the senior thesis they learn and apply project management, academic research, analysis, and public presentation skills.

Diploma Requirements

Regents School of Austin offers a rigorous college preparatory curriculum using a semester system of seven class periods. The minimum number of credits for graduating seniors is 23 in the following disciplines: Classical Rhetoric: Literature: History: Mathematics Science

AP

Regents School of Austin offers only three Advanced Placement courses, two in math and one in foreign language as the Regents curriculum requires more in-depth study than does the AP curriculum that is available in similar subjects. While AP courses are not offered in most disciplines, many students elect to take AP exams. Last year, 89 Regents students took 130 exams in 10 subjects. 78% of Regents students scored a 3 or higher and 48% posted scores of 4 or higher.
