Oct. 3-4 It’s an exciting time for Regents Alumni. This year, we will graduate over 70 graduates (that’s double my class size, and 40 times the size of the first graduating class) which means we will soon have nearly 1000 Regents alumni across the world. The purpose of the Regents

Alumni Network is to connect our alumni with one another and the Regents Community. I hope that you will use this group as an opportunity to connect with your fellow alumni and learn about what its going on back on campus at Regents. God is doing great things! Marshall Bowen ‘08

A Message from Rod Gilbert, Head of School We now have 375 alumni around the world. It will be a unique milestone and a blessing when we have more alumni serving as adults in the world than the 1000 students currently enrolled on our K-12 campus. That could very well be a reality by the Class of 2021. I am excited about the recent efforts by our alumni to organize a formal alumni network, and I hope that this network will help re-engage you with what is going on at campus and with one another. You are our ambassadors of the Regents community. We enjoy hearing about the journey God has brought you on after Regents, so please continue to share those stories with us. I look forward to seeing you on campus soon. -

Alumni Spotlight: Hudson Baird Empowering students in Austin Sound check went smoothly, now I only needed to wait the last few minutes until my talk at SXSWedu began. It was a talk about education - as much about my own as the one I provide our students every day at work. While I had led PelotonU for over a year, my thoughts moved quickly past that to Regents, where I learned to speak well.

But of course all of these things occurred, because that was what my speech was about. Education done well embraces the the whole student, not just academics. Alongside my mind, Regents cultivated my faith, fitness, and family. Now I was on the other end of the blackboard, running a nonprofit to get students through college.

I thought about Mock Trial and our multiple trips to the state competition. I thought about the Harkness Table, my senior thesis, and the still familiar opening lines to Canterbury Tales. But mostly, I thought about teachers from nine years ago who were the first to help me prepare the talk I was about to give.

Sure, there are the usual mechanics. We blend top online universities with inperson mentoring. There’s the attendance, grades, and tested policies that come with academia. Yet colleges rarely embrace the other needs of their students. While I attended a top twenty university and made good grades, my choices and convictions slowly crumbled.

Mr. Britt welcomed me into his living room after his children had fallen asleep to share strategies which proved true across disciplines and classrooms. Mrs. Gore met me at Central Market to hone my speech - just like she did numerous times before my thesis. Mrs. Benigno came across town to cheer our rehearsal and contribute the most useful list of revisions.

That’s why I got into this line of work. Teaching was a means to talk about character, work ethic, and faith. School becomes a vehicle for us to teach our students about failure and growing up. And so we do. And along the way we make our own mistakes and learn new lessons and get the chance to share those stories with other educators.

So I spoke that day in March from a small room at the Hilton Hotel. Mrs. Gore sat in the room cheering and I talked about how we teachers could sit in future audiences for our students. We could see past the task at hand to the other needs of our students. But it shouldn’t just be us teachers - as parents, leaders, and friends we can all do the same. -

Highlights from RSA Alumni Events Convocation: We had four alumni (Hudson Baird

Regents Alumni Toni Kwiatkowski and Tiffany Larkam crown the 2014 Homecoming King and Queen Kai Rice and Isabella Harrison 2

‘05, Marshall Bowen ‘12, Rachel Culwell ‘12, and Jordan Needham ‘05) participate in the annual Regents Convocation this year. The alumni helped distribute awards given to students for high academic achievement. Homecoming 2013: We had a very successful homecoming in 2013! Over 80 Regents alumni came out on a great Friday night to watch the football game. Every alumni that came by the alumni table at homecoming received some very cool Regents coasters and some yummy cookies (a big thanks to Olga Ingels and the other generous Regents Moms that donated time and effort to make this a special evening!) On Saturday after the game, we had our first ever Alumni Homecoming Lunch hosted in the brand new School of Rhetoric Building.

Highlights (Continued) If you haven’t seen the new building, be sure to swing by Regents for a tour. Over Rudy’s barbeque in the new Rhetoric building, we enjoyed time sharing stories about our time since Regents and reminiscing about our many memories of our time spent at Regents. A Big Thanks to Mary Jane Shorman and all the faculty, parents, and administration that made this year a possibility! Regents Gala 2013: This year, for the first time, we designated a full table at the bi-annual Regents Gala. We had several alumni attend who got to re-connect with other alumni, and also learned about some exciting updates and progress going on within the Regents Community. We are hoping to have the same opportunity next year at the Gala, so stay tuned for more information. Regents Open House: We also had several Regents alumni participate in the open house at Regents for prospective new parents. This was a great opportunity for the alumni to share with potential new parents about their time at Regents, and demonstrate the value a Regents education adds to students after they graduate. Regents Cup 2014: Alumni joined the fun on the course. Mark your calendars for next year – April 27, 2015!

Alumni Spotlight: Nolan Gore Serving in the United States Marines As I write this, I have now been an officer in the Marine Corps for almost a year and a half. Joanie (previously Benigno) and I were married 9 days after I commissioned and I have been dragging her all over the country since then. It has been an amazing ride. I completed Officer Candidate School and immediately moved into The Basic School for officers. After six extremely demanding months in which I was taught much of the basics of being an infantry platoon commander (how to function outdoors without any sleep and lots of bugs) we were sent to Combat Engineer school in NC. I like to claim that I am a trained engineer (because I am by Marine Corps terms), but all that means is I am on a NSA short list because I have extensive training in demolitions, a little

construction knowledge, and I know how to drive one of those robots you see in Hurt Locker. Now I am stationed at Camp Pendleton, and Joanie and I live smack dab between LA and San Diego in a little surf town called San Clemente. I have a platoon (~30 Marines) for which I am responsible in pretty much all areas of life. We have no known deployments in the future but the Marines are America's 911 force, meaning we pretty much always have to be ready to go anywhere. (Pray Ukraine doesn't blow up). I hope you all are well. Believe it or not, I am still proud I went to Regents. I hope to see you all at a Friday night football game some time in the near future. -

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And Surely, I am with you always to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:18- 290
