JOHN PIENKOWSKI ‘17 CAREER SWITCHER | RETIRED U.S. NAVY SCIENCE TEACHER, VIRGINIA BEACH PUBLIC SCHOOLS NATIONAL OUTSTANDING NEW EDUCATOR, 2018

“When I felt called to teaching after a career in the U.S. Navy, Regent University’s program bridged the gap and laid a solid, Christian-based path for me to follow.”

For John Pienkowski, a retired U.S. Navy commander, the classroom is a relatively new environment. “I switched careers because I was inspired by those who taught. I too wanted to make an impact,” he explains. “I had instructed

young, enlisted sailors; and I’m also a father, so I understand the importance of developing leadership.” It was the “desire to give back to a younger generation” that led John to seek Regent’s Military Resource Center, which helped

transition him into civilian life. After teaching biology for only a few years, John has already been recognized as an Outstanding New Educator by the National Association for Alternative Certification.

KRISTIN GARMAN ‘16 TEACHER, CHESAPEAKE PUBLIC SCHOOLS ELEMENTARY TEACHER OF THE YEAR, 2017 READING TEACHER OF THE YEAR, 2011 & 2016

“Regent taught me things I could immediately put into practice to help my students, and now I have more credibility and input at work.”

Kristin Garman felt called to earn her M.Ed.  in  Reading Specialist degree at Regent, so she could make a difference in her Title I school. “I saw children struggling to read. I knew with the right training, I could help them,” she explains.

“As a special education teacher, you don’t get to work with all kids, but you often get to work with the most challenging kids.” Her students come to her reading “far below grade level and are often the ones with no parental support,” but Kristin

has seen her students bloom under her tutelage. Through Regent, she says she refined her ability to understand her students’ needs and now she’s “making the impact” she dreamed about.

DR. SHARON I. BYRDSONG ‘08 SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS NORFOLK PUBLIC SCHOOLS NATIONAL MIDDLE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL OF THE YEAR, 2006

“If I had to do it over again, I would return to Regent. The university infuses a philosophy of Christian leadership into every aspect of the curriculum and instruction. I felt confident that when I finished my Ed.D. program, I would experience a higher level of success.”

For Dr. Sharon Byrdsong, a lot of responsibility rests on her shoulders: 30,000+ students. “As I serve my school division, I‘m humbled that I have the ability to change the trajectory of children’s lives. I accept this responsibility with the utmost

care and seriousness. It’s what motivates me to give my best each day, for the children and the community at large,” Sharon explains. “I am very results-driven. I like to get things done. I believe God called me to lead and make a

difference.” It’s what led her to Regent’s Doctor of Education. “The professors challenged us to have deep conversations on how we could shape the world. It’s that type of discipline that has so many successful leaders coming out of Regent.”
