The Robertson School of Government is an institutional member of the American Political Science Association (APSA) and the Network of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration (NASPAA). RSG’s faculty hold a variety of academic and professional memberships, including: International Studies Association, International Institute for Strategic Studies, International Political Science Association, International City & County Managers Association, and others.

Academics MASTER OF ARTS IN GOVERNMENT (M.A.) Students in the M.A. in Government program gain a thorough understanding of the intersection of international affairs, American political thought and history, and become excellent written and verbal communicators. RSG’s faculty have experience at the highest levels of government. MASTER OF PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION (MPA) The MPA is designed for those called to managerial and leadership careers in government and the nonprofit sector. RSG’s rigorous course of study prepares students to steward people and resources effectively and ethically at the local, national and international level. A required capstone project or internship ensures that students put into immediate practice the skills and knowledge acquired from faculty mentorships and coursework.

Robertson Hall Regent University

RSG is named for Senator A. Willis Robertson, a national figure who spent a half-century serving his country, first as an Army officer in World War I, and later spending four decades representing Virginia as an elected congressman and senator. Senator Robertson was a political conservative who typically voted against the expansion of federal power, from deficit spending to a burgeoning federal bureaucracy. He is remembered as a national leader in conservation, co-sponsoring the Pittman-Robertson Act (1937) that directed taxes from hunting rifles and ammunition to support state efforts at land and game preservation. To date, this has directed $2 billion federal dollars to habitat preservation and an additional $500 million in matching state funds. He was named “Outstanding Sportsman of America� by Field and Stream magazine in 1926.

Former Attorney General of the United States, Distinguished Professor Former Missouri Governor, U.S. Senator, and U.S. Attorney General. Mr. Ashcroft led the U.S. law enforcement community through the challenging and transformational period following the tragic attacks of September 11, 2001.

ADMIRAL VERN CLARK (RET.)

Former U.S. Chief of Naval Operations, Distinguished Professor Retired Admiral Vern Clark completed a distinguished 37-year Naval career in 2005. His experience spans his early days in destroyers, early command in a patrol gunboat as a lieutenant, and concluded in the halls of the Pentagon as the Chief of Naval Operations and a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

MARY MANJIKIAN, PH.D.

Associate Professor of Government, Associate Dean Dr. Mary Manjikian attended Wellesley College (B.A. in Russian), University of Oxford (M.Phil.) and the University of Michigan (M.A., Ph.D.). She is a former U.S. foreign service officer who served in Holland, Russia and Bulgaria. A prolific author, she was a Fulbright Scholar and has provided research to the U.S. military and other organizations.

JEFFRY H. MORRISON, PH.D. Professor of Government

Dr. Jeffry Morrison is an expert on American political thought. He serves as director of Academics at the federal government’s James Madison Foundation in Alexandria, Virginia. He has taught at Princeton University, the U.S. Air Force Academy and Georgetown University in the departments of government and history. He is the author or co-editor of four books and numerous articles, book chapters and reviews on American constitutionalism.

Employment & Internships The Robertson School of Government’s over 1,000 alumni occupy strategic positions in the White House, Departments of Justice, Homeland Security, and Health and Human Services. They also serve as congressional assistants and hold positions in local and state government. They are creating family-friendly legislation in state government, creating disaster management and response plans, running House and Senate campaigns, and dialoguing with foreign governments over everything from trade to human trafficking.

RSG graduates take seriously their call to public service, and so do we. RSG’s Career Center provides a database of jobs, internships and fellowships available to students, and sends out a weekly “Career Times” newsletter. The Career Center provides guidance on resumés and interviewing, and connects our graduates with opportunities for meaningful service.

Making a Difference Beyond the Walls of Congress Working full-time for a U.S. representative, Clarin Gniffke sought a flexible, online master’s program. At Regent, she found more than exceptional classes, experienced faculty and an opportunity to study in Oxford. She found confidence. “It’s a huge asset to take classes you can use in your everyday work-life. The congresswoman I worked for was on the Defense Appropriations and State and Foreign Operations Appropriations subcommittees.

Regent helped me understand the pieces of the puzzle to better support her.”

Today, Clarin is making a difference in the world — beyond even the walls of Congress. “Whether I’m teaching young people how our government works, or helping a constituent who’s having issues with Social Security or Veterans Affairs … that’s my passion: combining my love of people and politics.”

Chad McQueen, ‘15 Retired Chief Petty Officer, U.S. Navy

Serving His Country and Christ During his last year in the Navy, Chad McQueen started a ministry to encourage sailors. He and the chaplain assigned to his final deployment team designed and distributed 60 “ministry” military-challenge coins to the sailors they mentored and counseled. “Six of them accepted Jesus, and we baptized them in a swimming pool in Bahrain. I realized I could make a difference for Christ while serving my country.”

On a separate deployment, Chad and fellow sailors distributed food and shared Christ with a homeless man during a port visit to the Seychelles in East Africa. “The experience touched each of our lives.” Chad says he came to Regent after the Navy to prepare for an even more significant role in public service. His new focus? To become a diplomat for the U.S. State Department.

Larry Mayes, ‘98

Vice President of Programs Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Boston

Pursuing the Truth After a career in the financial industry, Larry Mayes was looking for a change. That led him to Regent. “I was fascinated by how RSG challenged students to reconcile faith and reason. The intellectual pursuit of truth was very appealing.” His intensive academic training paid off.

After serving six years as the Cabinet Chief of Human Services for the city of Boston, Larry advanced to vice president of programs for Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Boston. He sees each program as an important opportunity to live out his calling and make a difference. “I remember thinking when I was at Regent that I wanted to fight for those who can’t fight for themselves,” he recalls. “Now I get to do that every day.”

Kassie Dulin, ‘14

Director of Legal Communications Liberty Institute

A Guiding Light for Religious Liberty It was an exciting shift for Kassie Dulin — becoming a director at the nation’s largest nonprofit law firm devoted to religious liberty. Her degree from Regent made her resumé stand out. But it was her specialized approach to government and strong worldview that proved Kassie was equipped for leadership. “Regent’s online model provided an unparalleled combination of high-quality instruction, flexibility and specialization,” she says.

Kassie felt fully prepared when she accepted her job at Liberty Institute. “I guide legislators in D.C. and at the state capitol who come to the firm for advice on bills, helping them understand how the bill will impact religious liberty.

I also coordinate messaging and educate people on positive ways to defend their rights.” The degree continues to be an asset to her career. “I have a solid foundation for how I view the world and what is the proper role of government,” she says. “Thinking through real-life scenarios in my work as a student helps me in my career almost daily.”
