RESIDENCE & PLANTING

Commercial in front of housing. 25m

Tropical ground floor overhead.

The waterfront commercial pedestrian area is shaped through the division of paving.

CRAFT SHOPS & PUBLIC SPACES

Combination of rod and water planting.

SHOPS & WATERFRONT Divide the internal roads and planting.

PLANTING The planting module maintains the original agricultural landscape.

The most part of the site is to solve the problem of farmland occupation. Combine agriculture with housing.

It is arranged along the interface of the road to maximize the introduction of local handicraft industry and commerce to passing tourists.

MODULE 1

Residence & Planting

MODULE 2

Craft shops & Public spaces

The planting module is combined with the other three to focus on the production of crops.

It is arranged along the interface of the river to create a waterfront business experience block.

MASTER PLAN According to the local boat market culture, the sightseeing mode of the landscape belt is set as underwater boat travel and land air corridor. Among them, the ship route is marked with a dotted line, and the five pointed star part is the dock where the ship can stop. It is not only a blending point with land transportation, but also a ship market where people gather and trade. MODULE 1 Residence & Planting

GLOBAL LEATHERBACK TURTLE SURVIVAL CHALLENGE The leatherback sea turtle is listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act. It is estimated that the global population has declined 40 percent over the past three generations. Leatherback nesting in Malaysia has essentially disappeared, declining from about 10,000 nests in 1953 to only one or two nests per year since 2003. In the Northwest Atlantic, leatherback nesting was increasing; however, there have been significant decreases in recent years at numerous locations, including Atlantic coast of Florida, which is one of the main nesting areas in the continental United States. Large but potentially declining nesting populations also occur in eastern Atlantic, along the west African coastline.

12

FISHERY BYCATCH, HABITAT EROSION AND HUMAN ACTIVITY Trinidad is the most important nesting ground for leatherback turtles in the world, especially in the Grnde Riviere area, but even so, the number of nesting turtles is still decreasing every year. The curses are fishery bycatch, beach erosion and human activities. Illegal fishing causes a large number of leatherback turtles to be accidentally injured and killed every year. The erosion of rivers and coasts has made the nesting area of leatherback turtles become smaller and smaller, and even new turtle eggs may be washed away by the tide. Sound and light pollution caused by human activities will affect the leatherback turtle's egg laying activities.

MASTER PLAN The graphic design is mainly divided into two parts. One is to extend the boundary of the beach and set up a mechanism to protect the beach, including the remodeling of seagrass beds, planting of beach plants, sand fixation on sand dunes, and so on. The other is to design a streamline of human activities, so that humans can observe sea turtles and enjoy the beach scenery without affecting the leatherback turtles’ landing activities.

N

scale: 1:2000

This design protects the integrity of the leatherback turtle's habitat and is not disturbed as much as possible.

PLAN GENERATION

1.Relocate buildings that are too close to the beach and close to the river that are at risk of erosion.

3.Form sand dunes according to the wind direction to protect the beach.

3

THE EVOLUTION OF SAND DUNES

1. Lay haystacks on the beach.

2. The haystacks trapped sand to form a small slope.

3. Through the action of the wind, the small slope forms a crescent-shaped dune.

4. Planting plants to fix sand.

5. Establish fences to protect sand dunes and prevent human destruction.

6. Dunes and plants grow stronger.

2.Establish pedestrian trails independent of the beach to reduce people walking to the beach.

4.Join landscape node where people interact with the landscape and sea turtles.

The beach where turtles lay their eggs, the space for human activities, and the city are effectively divided to minimize the disturbance of turtles.

The newly planned route allows people to observe sea turtles and enjoy the beach with restrictions along the coastline, but avoid large-scale influx of people into the beach.

SECTION AA' 1:250 The vegetation on the beach is restored to the greatest extent, which helps protect the beach.

Underground sea turtle observation is one of the few places in this design where people can directly observe leatherback turtles. This place will only be open during the day. People observe sea turtle activities through reflective glass, and can effectively avoid being spotted by sea turtles. At night, the place will remain dark and no new light pollution will be created. There is also an exhibition space for education and popular science about turtle protection.

While restoring vegetation, it is more important to establish light barriers to prevent leatherback turtles from becoming disoriented due to light pollution.

ESTABLISH A PURELY UNDISTURBED TURTLE HABITAT

Sand dunes can help keep the sand on the beach from being eroded. Dune plants mostly use deep root soil species, which is beneficial for plants to penetrate as far as possible into the sand to keep the sand dune stable.
