REGINA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

OCT-DEC

2020

WELCOME TO THE 2020-2021 RSO SEASON These are extraordinary times, to be certain. The interruption of our previous season was difficult, but created in all of us an extra determination to return to live music making. Circumstances have required us to reimagine what our 2020-2021 season will look like, and I’m thrilled with the result. This season will not look like any season the RSO has offered in the past. It will be an opportunity to make new discoveries, and it will give you a chance to experience the RSO in a more intimate and personal way. Though the orchestra will be smaller, it will be no less meaningful. Our commitment to bringing you great live music has only been strengthened. Stay tuned for the next instalment of our season programming.

Canadian composer Kevin Lau’s evocative and dreamlike Prelude to Dawn is the pivot point between Haydn's light and inventive Symphony No. 96, written at the height of his symphonic powers, and Shostakovich’s dramatic Chamber Symphony. Barshai’s arrangement for chamber orchestra of Shostakovich’s Third String Quartet combines playfulness with profundity.

Maestra Tania Miller—former Music Director of the Victoria Symphony and Associate Conductor of the Vancouver Symphony —brings her dynamic style, charm, and grace to the podium. Canadian composer Harry Stafylakis pushes boundaries in his work that reaches forward for new horizons while hearkening to the past. Strauss’s lyrical and youthful Wind Serenade is a soothing interlude before the brilliance of Mozart’s “Linz” Symphony.

The unforgettable melodies of Mozart weave together the first two works on this program. Jocelyn Morlock’s Zart is inspired by the sweet sounds of Mozart’s opera The Magic Flute. Another woodwind then takes centre stage with Hyonsuk Kim, RSO Principal Clarinet, featured as soloist in one of the most famous clarinet concertos. The RSO celebrates the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth with his energetic and noble Second Symphony.

An audience favourite since his sold-out orchestral debut with the RSO in 2011, Regina’s singer-songwriter-pianist Jeffery Straker returns to perform his original songs arranged for orchestra, including Birch Bark Canoe and The Wonderful Mrs. Bell. “Rufus Wainwright, as well as k.d. lang are among the Canadians making essential and beautiful music. Add the name Jeffery Straker to that list.”—Chicago Free Press

Since becoming the first Métis artist to perform with a symphony orchestra at her RSO debut in 2014, singer-songwriter Andrea Menard has shared her advocacy for reconciliation and unity on our ground-breaking Forward Currents Festival, and headlined at Symphony Under the Sky. She performs with guitarist and co-songwriter Robert Walsh to share her latest musical adventures with you. Rubaboo is the Métis word for stew, and is a delicious musical declaration of love, sovereignty, Métis culture, and as always…some jazz to mix into the flavours.

Corelli Concerto Grosso in F major Op. 6 No. 6

John Harbison’s Wind Quintet, though modern in composition, strives for a classical sensibility. The folk sounds of a morning love song, captured by Enescu, evoke an intimacy in his Aubade for string trio. Birthday celebrations in honour of Beethoven’s 250th continue with one of his vital and enduring string quartets.

This varied program of works from the Baroque to Contemporary is united by the harpsichord, as special guest Valerie Hall joins the Regina Symphony Chamber Players. From the counterpoint of Corelli to Canadian Linda Catlin Smith's prize-winning Garland, the historical sound of the harpsichord is highlighted in settings both old and new.
