a c k n o w l e d g e m e nt We would like express our upmost gratefulness to the Great Almighty, guided us to complete this report on “Hotel Resort: “ We are also highly thankful to Mr Henry Kusnadi for giving us this exceptional opportunity to experience the following step in our life. Last but not the least, we would like to thank our mentors and the other teams for supporting us alongside the process of making the book;et.

By the end of the internship, we hope to gain a deeper understanding of the 7 steps of Effective Design Process.

We felt that obtaining knowledge through lectures are s not enough to qualify us as an architect. We believed that professionalism and experiencing firsthand how an architecture firm works, would aid us to be an architect. Hence, our decision to take the internship offered by Indomegah Architect. The program trains us in aspects such as ethical mannerism in the world of consultant architect, which requires a high proficiency of independence and sophistication.

As the theme of this internship, we also hope to learn more about resort hotels.

ME THODS To produce a compelling booklet, we followed several methods, such as the precedent research and field studies. With the data collected, we continued to the design process in which we delivered our design through a presentation.

The design integrates the modern approach to space and form with vernacular materials, skills, values, and the essence of Balinese pavilion architecture. Alongside ecologically responsible intentions, it introduces natural beauty and sense of place as a modest approach to luxury. The buildings’ form is inspired by loose piled limestone boulders in local terraced farms. The hotel villas are arrangement of pavillions tucked to the hillside as terraces, each framing the landscape of its preceding villa. Together with the overall arrangement of the resort that coalesce with the gentle landscape, the resort reinforces the exquisite panorama view.

C o n c e pt

Soori Bali was designed with the main principle of green sustainability. The project is to be both climatically and socially reactive to the local surroundings. The resort’s design reflects the local community by using local materials, together with integration of motifs, elements and forms. The mixture of villa types were designed accordingly to the local climatic conditions, also maximizing the views of the surrounding beach, sea and paddy fields. The design of the restaurant terrace and spa facilities incorporates terracotta screens, adapted from traditional Balinese motifs. The exterior hardscape and softscape designs are intended to create a seamless transition between the interior and exterior spaces, with the specific goal in preserving the natural topography; using selective trees in the garden.

The slight north-eastern orientation and building configuration shield the residential area from the harsh sunlight of the setting sun. Large window panes and skylight are incorporated in major public areas, allowing sunlight and view as a break to the heavy massing. The high ceiling of the lobby and openings allow air to ventilate through. However, the block massing might have blocked the wind from the south-eastern side. Thus, this contributes to the stagnant air within the Aston complex.

NATURAL VENTILATION & LIGHTING The buildings in Aston are linked by semi-open corridors forming something like a bridge. Beyond the balustrades are louvers or glass with openings, thus allowing sunlight and wind to still penetrate through. In contrast, the residential area is connected through double-loaded corridor within the building, thus it depended upon artificial means.

MEANS OF ESCAPE As fire protection measures, hydrant and sprinkler are present along the corridor. Emergency stairs are located at the end of each building. Open outdoor areas clustered in the centre of the complex becomes the assembly points.

INTERESTING FEATURES Each of the corridors linking the buildings have their own special design, but all focuses on bringing the unique view to the visitors, futher enhanced with natural light and ventilation

faci l i t i e s Restaurant and Bar

Swimming pool

Aston provides a variety of food that can been taken in the main restaurant, near the lobby of the hotel. The restaurant allows the guest to view the middle part of the hotel, which is full of nature. The bar is situated right beside the restaurant so that guest may decided whether they would like to have a casual meal or only a place to relax.

The swimming pool is located near the center of the site. The two pools are connected by a wall that holds the water from the upper pool from spilling. The upper pool is rectagularly shaped, while the bottom one is irregularly shaped to give guest the choice of different experience. Guest who wants to exercise may visit the gym beside the pool.

Nature integration

46

With careful consideration and intelligent architecture, Aston spectacularly integrated the nature that the land previously had. Without disturbing the actual site and building permanent structures around a river, Aston manage to preserve the nature and make it to their advantage. All of the buildings are surrounded by plants and integrates the nature that it possess.

NATURAL VENTILATION & LIGHTING R Hotel has single-loaded corridor, with half-open wall on one side. This allows continous ventilation throughout the building. There is also a canopy preventing direct sunlight from penetrating the corridor.

MEANS OF ESCAPE R Hotel has exterior emergency stairs which doubles as normal stairs. Similarly to the lobby, it is enclosed in porous concrete facade. This made the stairs to be sort of detached should the building get caught on fire. With three stairs in one corridor , it is easily accessible from the guest rooms, . Non-slippery material is used for the stairs, completed with nosing and adequate step height.

INTERESTING FEATURES The outdoor AC in R Hotel is concealed by a similar concrete rooster facade, allowing contiuity of design.

53

faci l i t i e s Restaurants &Bar This restaurant and bar , unlike any other resort hotels have a unique concept to its design. As seen in the picture below, the restaurant does not have any fixed wall. R Hotel aim to engage the quests with nature surrounding the hotel. The layout of the room also indicates that they want the guests to move around and enjoy the ambience freely. The main color scheme is brown, as it compliments with the nature.

Meeting Room

54

R Hotel provides a separate building for the public facilities as the meeting rooms. In this case, the design has a modern touch. Not only is the meeting room spacious and unique, the lights on the ceiling demonstrates the concept of the design. The lights leading towards the other end of the building, indicaets that the other side seeks people’s attention; the meeting toom itself. Like the other designs, it follows the color scheme.

Swimming Pool R Hotel’s swimming pool is small and simple designed. What is interesting is that the rooms on the first floor has the satisfication of an easy access to the swimming pool. The pool stretches from one end of the building to the other end. Due to simple design, from a far the pool looks like a small pond, where infact people could dive in and enjoy the pool with an amazing view of the nature and the courtyard.

Parking R Hotel provides enough spaces for both guests and staff to park their vehicles; car and motocycle alike.

Slightly orientated towards North-East, the large window panes in the lobby of Bandara roughly received even sunlight throughout the day. The jutted out ledge blocks harsh angles of the sun, allowing optimum and comfortable daylighting. The enclosed massing of the lobby mostly relies on mechanical air conditioner, masked with decorations of ventilation grilles along the frieze.

NATURAL VENTILATION & LIGHTING The residential buildings of Bandara are linked with open corridors and formed small courtyards in between, heavily reliant on natural ventilation and lighting during transfers between building. However, the large massings sometimes block out much wind, minimizing the wind-breeze from ventilating. Similarly in the interior, the rooms are arranged in double-loaded corridor, with skylight on the void in between, resembling courtyard form.

MEANS OF ESCAPE As fire protection measures, hydrant and sprinkler are present along the corridor. Emergency stairs are located at the end of each building. From observation, the height of each steps are a bit tall and the stairs’ width a bit narrow, although they are still within approvable margin. Unlike other floors, the stairs use matte finishing that is not slippery as well to anticipate the heavy traffic.

INTERESTING FEATURES Bandara leaves no edges undesigned. Even in between the void, the slabs are decorated with carving details.

NATURAL VENTILATION & LIGHTING The corridors joining major functions in Padma are outdoors, allowing adequate sunlight and wind breeze to pass through. Even for the interior corridors, it is well-lit by sunlight through voids. Some openings are present in the corridor to ventilate through, albeit the residence area are more enclosed.

MEANS OF ESCAPE The unconventional arrangement of Padma Hotel consisting of multiple buildings and integrated facitilites resulted in variations in means of escape. Stairs access to special facilities such as ballroom and outbond is quite unfeasible with the small size and spreading layout, and the minimal design might not be helpful during emergencies. To combat with the not-so-straightforward access, Padma introduces several assembly points. . However, the conventional massing of the residences caters guest for easy access out of the buildings.

INTERESTING FEATURES Subtle touch of nature can be felt throughout Padma Hotel, from the choice of its materials, down to the flooding sunlight at small but just the right corner.

The pool in Padma is not separated than the residence building like resort hotels do. The pool is designed as an extension of the building, indicating that the pool is indeed part of Padma Hotel. The unique feature of this pool is the water flows endlessly on three sides of the pool. The corner has the best spot with the nature background and endless water flowing beneath it.

The outsanding feature of Padma Hotel is the idea of the semi-outdoor ballroom. As the main concept of Padma is the endless boundaries between nature and manafactures, they created less manmade walls. The concept would go out far as changing the ballroom floor with put-on grass. A small platform is made, for the events such as weddings or gatherings.

R estau r a nt

78

Similar with the pool and the semi-outdoor building, the restuarant also is also designed with minimal bounding boundaries. Padma Hotel want to maximize all interactions with nature for the guests to experience and enjoy. The ceiling is drawned inwards than the floor, creating an ambience of freedom and calm for the guests. To add to that, the use of glass adds the feeling of lightness.

Lounge Just from entering through the lobby, the lounge is assited with the outsanding view of the nature.

Gym and Spa Though indoor, the fully-equipped gym felt outdoor with the view, as well as the spa.

Outbound and Parking The unique part of Padma Hotel is the Outbound activity, open to guests and non-guests. Padma Hotel also provides prrking space.

Due to the wide elongated shape of the site, the swimming pools are bound to be separated. It is not a resort hotel without an unique feature. Damar has easy access to the swimming pool Like the main concept of the hotel, it incorporates simple Indonesian culture design. In contrast, the Salak bar is a small lounge with similar interior designs. It is located near the lobby.

OMBAK RESORT

Through undulating curves like the waves, we hope to deliver a dynamic experience within our resort. Inspired by the shape of sea-shells and the crest of waves, Ombak Resort resonates the qualities of sea itself. Like the ocean, variation of height, diverging points and surfaces all enrich the visitor’s experience from the different visual cues.

DESIGN D E S I GCONCEPT N CONCEPT

The half circle is a way to communicate to the site that surrounded our site.

In order to welcome the visitor that is coming from the main road, the half circle is being slanted as to open towards the road.

As the way to represent a privacy of the hotel resort the second massing is more narrow. The round shape also formed by the unique shape of site.

All of the axis of the massing were meeting in one point which is the center as a form of pool to unite them.

Gathering all the axis and shape to create a harmonious relation from the site, has build a beautiful design concept for Ombak Resort Hotel
