Sadly, Kilgore lost. However, shortly afterward, St. John got engaged to the love of his life, another teacher at KHS named Miss Louise Jeter.

On December 12, 1941, ve days after the bombing at Pearl Harbor, Coach St. John awarded letters to 18 Kilgore Bulldogs. Later that day, he left Kilgore and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. In October 1942, he was promoted to Ensign, and on January 11, 1943, Ensign St. John was ordered to serve on the USS Borie, doing battle against Nazi U-boats in the North Paci c.

On its fourth mission, the Borie engaged U-405. In high winds and turbulent seas, the Borie bore down on U-405. Violent waves tossed the Borie onto the deck of the surfaced U-boat, sorely damaging both craft. With the boats locked together and the big guns rendered useless, the battle became a close-order ght with sailors wielding machine guns, ri es, pistols, and even are guns.

Eventually, the ships became dislodged. The U-boat sank, but the Borie was badly damaged as well. Sinking in the rough, 30-degree Atlantic, the Borie issued a mayday; the USS Go arrived as the Borie slipped beneath the surface. The crew of the Go lowered nets so the crew of the Borie could make their way to safety. Halfway up the makeshift ladder, St. John jumped from a position of safety back into the icy waters and guided four of his shipmates to the net. He went back for a fth shipmate and never returned. Coach St. John and 26 other Americans were lost at sea.

The Kilgore Bulldogs today play in the stadium where R.E. St. John coached. On November 1, 1947, the four-year anniversary of Coach St. John's death, the stadium was renamed in his honor. Faculty, students, parents of KHS students, and alumni lled the stadium, and at game time, the Board of Trustees o cially named it the R.E. St. John Memorial Stadium.

The Kilgore High School Football Booster Club would first like to personally thank all the merchants, supporters and fans that have made this organization a continued success. Without you this program would not exist. We would like to invite you to be a part of the KHS Football Booster Club. With your help and support we can continue the mission of our organization which is to promote school spirit and to support our players, coaches and sta . The funds created by the booster club provide scholarships for our graduating senior players and trainers. There are many ways to be a part of the football booster club. You can attend booster club meetings every Tuesday night at 7:00 PM at the Mitchell Field House, purchase merchandise sold by the booster club, attend tailgate meals before home games, or participate in gameday breakfasts for the team. The Kilgore Football Booster Club would love to have you join us in promoting and supporting our Kilgore Bulldogs Football Program. If you have any questions about our program or would like to know how you can become involved, please feel free to contact any booster club o icer or member.
