QUILT SHOW Joseph Schneider Haus Joseph Schneider Haus National Historic Site is a dynamic community museum and local landmark in downtown Kitchener. The 1816 Georgian frame farmhouse was built by one of the area’s early settlers, Joseph Schneider, a Pennsylvania-German Mennonite. History comes to life as costumed staff demonstrate traditional tasks in step with the seasons. Come by for a visit and enjoy hands-on activities, workshops, special events, gallery exhibits and more!

Connections On exhibit May 10 to September 27 A quilt exhibit showcasing quilt artists from across Canada.

Spring/Summer hours May to June – Wednesday to Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday 1 to 5 p.m. July to August – The historic house, galleries and gift shop are open seven days a week. Monday to Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday 1 to 5 p.m. The main floor of the historic house and exhibit galleries are wheelchair accessible. Admission Adults $6 Seniors/Students $5 Children 5 to 12 years $4 Children under 5 years FREE Family $15 (Two adults and their dependent children) All prices plus HST. Gift Certificates available. Museum members receive a 10 per cent discount on select workshops and in our gift shop. Free parking, accessible by GRT bus routes 2, 8, 24 and 25.

Glass Art of Laurie Spieker Folk-Artist-in-Residence 2015 Laurie’s appreciation for glass moved her through stained glass and into the warm realm of fused and kiln-formed glass. Her current body of glass art is based on close observations of nature. The Folk Artist-in-Residence is sponsored by the Friends of Joseph Scheider Haus.

Funny Bones Saturday, October 17, 2 to 4 p.m. $50 plus HST Learn about your phalanges and fashion some funky fused glass bones – Boo! Ages 6 to 96, make a standing sculpture featuring bones. Glass demonstrations Celebrating Quilts – Stained Glass Demo Saturday, June 6, from 1 to 4 p.m. Join Laurie as she demonstrates the tools, techniques and materials of stained glass, while working on a colour-splashed glass quilt. Culture Days Saturday, September 26, 1 to 4 p.m. Explore the world of stained and fused glass and fused glass with Laurie Spieker.

The Wash House Opening Weekend

May 2 and 3 The Schneider family Wash House will be humming with activity all weekend. Staff demonstrate spinning, traditional wool dyeing and open hearth cooking. Learn to pick and card wool. On Saturday visit with our Waterloo 4H friends and their sheep.

All About Undertaking: Funeral Businesses and Practices in Waterloo County,

May 6, 7 p.m. Presented by author and local historian Marion Roes, sponsored by the Friends of Joseph Schneider Haus. Admission by donation.

Scraps and Schnibbles

May 16 and 17 – The Schneider family recycled nearly everything, every bit of fabric was used up in quilts, pot holders and Schnibble mats.

Quilting Activities

May 6 to 28 – Come see an array of quilts going to the New Hamburg Mennonite Central Committee Relief Sale and Quilt Auction. May 23 to June 7 – Quilting demonstrations by Mennonite quilters and Waterloo County Quilting Guild members. Costumed staff quilt bonnets and petticoats.

2015 Quilt Block Contest Entry

May 23 – Come see our winning quilt blocks stitched into place during our annual Quilting Bee. Winner Announcement – 4 p.m.

Lecture with rych mills: Trek from Pennsylvania to Little Berlin

Saturday, May 30 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. or 1 to 3 p.m. Make your own planter from re-claimed wood. No experience necessary! Children can make a re-claimed wood sign while Mom or Dad makes a planter. $25 plus HST. Ages five and up.

Thursday, June 25, 7 p.m. Guest Speaker rych mills takes us on a journey through the eyes of a child, exploring the trials and tribulations of the early settlers’ trek to the Grand River Valley.

Fascinating Furniture

June 27 and 28 See what life was like for the first families to immigrate to the wilderness of Upper Canada. Demonstrations of activities associated with early settlement, including dressing timbers, fashioning shingles and tree nails, and cooking over an open fire.

Saturday, June 13, 10 a.m. to noon Whether from an antique market or a downtown boutique, the furnishings in our home tell a story. Join us as Conestoga College’s Camelia Imrie talks about tables, chairs, and more.

Immigration and Early Settlement

Stories of Immigration with Derek Brisland Summer at Joseph Schneider Haus

Step back in time and meet the Schneiders. You’ll find costumed staff doing seasonal chores such as gardening, pickling, preserving, baking, and laundry. Special guests throughout the summer.

Saturday, June 27, 1 to 3 p.m. Waterloo Region is rich in stories of early settlers. Storyteller Derek Brisland shares stories from that heritage, including those of the Schneider family, and others from farther afield. Musical accompaniment and immigration songs by Michael Kelly Cavan.

Canada Day

Wednesday, July 1 Celebrate Canada Day and the arrival of Joseph Schneider and his family to this area in 1807. Birthday cake at 2 p.m. Free admission!

Every Friday is Bake Day in July and August

How Does your Garden Grow? Saturday, July 18, 1 to 2 p.m. Join Susan Broughton from All Things Tea as she unearths the delights of an herb garden, from remedies to supplements and teas.

Natural Remedies from Today and Yesterday

The bake oven will be fired up every Friday all summer long. Help make yeast, bread, pies and puddings and sample a bite or two.

Thursday, July 23, 1 to 3 p.m. Join staff and local Homeopath Tracy Poizner, to uncover the hidden healing properties of the plants around us.

Sunday Tea and Garden Tours

Every Sunday in July and August the Schneiders invite you to stop by for a cup of tea and a tour of their garden.

Walking Tour Series: Mr. Schneider’s Neighbourhood

July 9 and August 13, 10:30 a.m. Join local historian rych mills for a unique tour of the neighbourhood. Pack a lunch and join us for a presentation and refreshments. Pre-registration required. $10 plus HST per person.

Storytelling Workshop with Derek Brisland

Thursday, July 16, 1 to 3 p.m. This workshop looks at the oral tradition and variations of stories. Participants can share their own stories. High School age and up. Pre-registration required. $20 plus HST per person.

July 28 and August 27, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. What does recreating a Mennonite settler’s cabin entail? Project manager Chris Gibson walks us through the construction of what would later be repurposed as the Schneider Haus Washhouse.

Heirloom Vegetables with Rose Murray

Thursday, August 6, 1 p.m. Raised on a farm near Collingwood, Rose Murray learned the art of growing, cooking and preserving food. Rose will discuss heirloom vegetables and their uses.

Bairds and the Bees

Tuesday, August 11, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bees are an important part of our natural environment. Sample some honey treats, see beekeeping equipment and hear why these creatures need our help, when the Baird family from Belwood pay us a visit.
