McDougall Cottage McDougall Cottage, an 1858 granite and limestone labourer’s house, is located in downtown Cambridge in the historic factory district. Home for more than a century to two families of hardworking Scots, the McDougalls and the Bairds, this charming cottage with its pocket-sized gardens, boasts some of the most spectacular hand-painted friezes and trompe l’oeil ceilings Ontario has to offer. The Cottage serves as an interpretation centre, hosting a variety of special events that celebrate the area’s Scottish heritage. Regular events include monthly Ceilidhs, Tartan Teas and Kids in Kilts afternoons. Spring/Summer Hours Wednesday to Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. Admission By donation unless otherwise noted. Museum Members receive a 10 per cent discount on walking tours, teas, workshops and talks. Treat your friends and family to events at McDougall Cottage. Gift certificates now available.

PAINT THE GRAND Sunday, June 7, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Rain date is June 14).

Watch artists paint en plein air as they create masterpieces in support of the Friends of McDougall Cottage’s annual Musician-in-Residence program. Walk the Art Loop to see the artists. In September you can bid on your favourite piece at our silent auction that runs from September 11 to December 13.

Call for Artists! Artists are invited to set up their easels within walking distance of the Cottage. Visit our website for more information and the online entry form. Registration deadline is May 29, 2015.

GARDENS AND THE GRAND QUILT EXHIBIT

Quilt artists were challenged to create a wee quilt that captured their favourite bloom, view of the Grand River or secret garden spot. See the results and vote for your favourite miniature masterpiece.

Exhibit now open until July 5!

Come and learn about the history of golf in Scotland and Waterloo Region – including local golfers such as Moe Norman and Mary Gay, as well as golf courses and tournaments.

Workshop: Watercolour Landscapes Saturday, May 23, 1 to 4 p.m. Artist, Tiina Price shares techniques for painting landscapes. $25 per person plus HST. Space is limited. Call to register. All levels welcome.

TALK: Container Gardening Wednesday, May 6, 7 p.m. Join experts from the Kitchener Master Gardeners for an informative and instructive lecture. $5 per person plus HST. Call to register.

Wee Quilt Artists’ Reception Wednesday, May 27, 4 to 6 p.m. Celebrate the quilters/contributors of the 2015 Wee Quilts. Cast a vote!

Evening Concert with Richard Arrowsmith and Jo Maher Thursday, May 7, 7 to 9 p.m. A fabulous evening concert featuring these U.K. musicians known for their dynamic interpretations of traditional material. May Day Dancing and Fun Saturday, May 9, 1 to 4 p.m. Entertainment by the Oakville Ale and Sword and Forest City Morris dance troupes and musical duo Hunter’s Corners. TALK: The Joy of Lavender Wednesday, May 20, 7 p.m. Joy Magwood shares the secrets of growing, harvesting and utilizing this sweetly scented and very versatile herb. $5 per person plus HST. Make a sachet to take away $3 (small) or $8 (large). Advance registration required.

Fiddle pibroch vs. bagpipe: May 28, 7 p.m. – Dave and Ed Neigh compare and explore fiddle pibroch to bagpipe traditions. Fiddle Workshop: June 14, 12:30 to 3 p.m. Learn traditional Scottish fiddle music. $25 plus HST. Call to register. Tartan Tea: August 16, 2 p.m. Dave’s evocative soundscapes provide a charming, musical backdrop. Paint the Grand: September 11, 7 p.m. Dave entertains at our Paint the Grand Artists’ Reception and Exhibit Opening.
