Welcome to CityMag... I CAN’T think of many better ways to spend a month than catching up with the ever-so-down-to-earth – and extremely talented – Sheffield artist, Pete McKee. The boy from Batemoor is bringing nostalgia by the bucket load to Magna, in his latest exhibition, Six Weeks to Eternity. Telling the story of those long summer holidays, it’s an event not to be missed. We’re extremely grateful to Pete for taking time out with us, and for supplying us with our fabulous cover. I’m sure many of you can relate to the image – parents were no doubt fed up of hearing “I’m bored” repeated like a broken record! We all have our own memories of these times and Pete has encouraged everyone to contribute – maybe you’ll feature yourself. Elsewhere we’re overloading on food and drink and have some great advice on your favourite tipples as well as some simple recipes to try at home. Our music editor Phoebe Seymour swoons over Jamie Woon while looking at some of the latest releases and we get some top style tips from the likes of Savills and Brag Vintage. Thanks for reading.

THE butcher, the baker and the candlestick maker... it’s all about you talented artisan movers and makers! Sheffield has really embraced the independent resurgence and this month we have caught up with some exceptional businesses that are carving their way to the top if their game. From Hudson & Bond’s chocolate wine to mighty fine pies from Pie Eyed (don’t forget the Hendos!), we have a real showcase of homegrown artisan producers. I was fortunate enough to sample a little slice of local luxury at Losehill Hall Hotel and Spa; find out how I got on on page 26. We also have some little health tips to keep you on the straight and narrow and sampled the delights at Meadowhall’s new Spanish restaurant, Tapas Revolution. After you’ve burned off all those calories of course. Also in this issue, we are so excited for Pete McKee’s new exhibition – check out the exclusive interview here and we will be running a competition on our socials to WIN a signed copy of this issue! Enjoy! Melanie Jackson Publishing Manager

CRIMINAL 15 April

A strong cast – Ryan Reynolds, Gal Gadot, Gary Oldman, Kevin Costner, Tommy Lee Jones – dips into sci-fi territory and sees the memories and skills of a deceased CIA agent implanted into an unpredictable and dangerous convict in order to finish an incomplete mission. No prizes for guessing that things don’t quite go to plan.

EYE IN THE SKY 15 April

Political thriller starring Helen Mirren and Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul. Mirren is the colonel ordered to carry out a drone strike on a suspected terrorist cell in Kenya but when a nineyear-old girl wanders into the kill zone, the decision to strike moves to the hands of politicians and lawyers.

THE JUNGLE BOOK

CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR

Disney’s trend of recreating their classic tales with live action – think Maleficent and Cinderella – brings Kipling’s Jungle Book to the fore. All the favourites are there, including Bagheera, Baloo, Kaa and the fearsome Shere Khan. Bill Murray, Ben Kingsley, Idris Elba and Scarlett Johansson lend their voices to the talking animals.

Ramping up the tension towards the next Avengers film, and introducing yet more Marvel characters, Captain America: Civil War sees the popular superhero team divided when the government plans to regulate and oversee them. Captain America, fuelled by a desire to protect his friend Bucky Barnes (Winter Soldier), is against regulation while Tony Stark (Iron Man) is in favour. Cue the split and an epic stand-off which sees the likes of Spiderman, Ant-Man, Scarlet Witch, War Machine and Black Panther all go headto-head. It’s a royal rumble to remember.

From here to eternity Take a stroll down memory lane to times of long summer days playing football in the park, candy floss and caravan holidays in Cleethorpes. Pete McKee’s latest exhibition is guaranteed to put a smile on your face. THINK back to when you was a kid. The six weeks holidays were an almost magical time, the highlight of your year. Forget Christmas and birthdays, that most sacred of times between the end of July and the start of September was the pinnacle. The be all and end all. No school, just fun, sun and quite possibly boredom, but it didn’t matter, these were great times. Everyone has a different story to tell, from bike rides and playing football to family caravan holidays and coach trips. Whatever you did, the sun always shone and you always had a smile on your face. It’s just this type of nostalgia that characterises Sheffield artist Pete McKee’s much-loved work. His knack of tapping into those little memories, those defining life moments that can’t help but make you grin from ear to ear, is testament to his success. And now he’s embarking on his biggest project to date. Six Weeks to Eternity, which takes place at the Magna Science Adventure Centre over the weekend of 14 and 15 May, is filled with not just Pete’s memories of this most treasured time, but of yours too. He’s actively encouraged people to share their memories of their six weeks holidays, send in pictures via their website (6weeks.co.uk) and hopefully see their contributions form part of the exhibition. “It’s been a fantastic response, it’s been absolutely lovely,” says a humbled and ever so down to earth Pete. “We’ve been putting them up [online] on a daily basis. It shows what a love there is for that time. It’s heart-warming to see and great that people have got involved in such a big way.” >

In light of this huge interaction – the response has already run into the hundreds – Pete is quick to point out that this is not an autobiographical show, this is about broader feelings, experiences and, more often that not, that huge sense of freedom that you seemed to have as a child. “I’ve had to glean a lot of inspiration from the past and what I did in the six weeks holidays. It’s that whole kind of celebration of what we did as kids, how we basically ended up getting kicked out in the morning and playing on the streets all day, until it went dusk and got called in by our parents.” Chatting with Pete, his passion for this period is infectious. It certainly reminded me of the times I spent either playing football at the park, splash sessions at the school swimming pool or long journeys to the south coast in convoy with my grandparents. His talent for tapping into memories that have such a broad appeal, that people can easily relate to, is clear. It’s why he’s been elevated from a humble local newspaper cartoonist to one the country’s

foremost talents that has seen him work with the likes of Noel Gallagher, Sir Paul Smith and Clarks. Not bad for a 50-year-old from Batemoor. Many of Pete’s memories come from this corner of south Sheffield; he’d often find himself wandering up to Coal Aston or Dronfield or down to Graves Park with friends. Though there was always something to get out of the way first: “It started with an orgy of terrible TV. Basically there was one channel and you didn’t get a choice of what you watched, it tended to be like Robinson Crusoe,” he reminisces. “You may be lucky with the odd cartoon but once Why Don’t You? came on, you ran out as fast as you could. It was a case of who knocked on whose door first and then you met up and either built a den, played football or just ended walking into the next estate. Mucking around with your mates tended to be the overriding memory for me, coming up with dreams and schemes.” Family holidays also played a huge part; Pete’s were usually by

There was a bit of pocket money in the back pocket from your parents and so you felt like kings going into an arcade and spending a quid’s worth of two pences. coach to somewhere on the east coast. “The fondest memories that you have are the holidays you spent with your family, going away to Scarborough, Skeggy or Chapel. There was a bit of pocket money in the back pocket from your parents and so you felt like kings going into an arcade and spending a quid’s worth of two pences. They were great times.” It’s perhaps no surprise that the bulk of the pictures sent in for the exhibition are of family holidays but when you think about it, when else did you have a camera? So let’s look at the Magna Science Adventure Centre, it is a big space to fill – that’s a lot of memories – and Pete openly admits that he was more than a little daunted. “The main hall that we’re using is absolutely huge. When you stood in the middle of it and looked out… Simply putting 30 paintings in a big room like that is not going to cut the mustard so I’ve devised other things to sort of make a big splash and tell the whole story really, of our youth. It’s a big all singing, dancing show.” If you were hoping for any more insight into what to expect, I’m sorry to disappoint, Pete was keeping his cards very close to his chest. “We’re trying to keep it under wraps as much as possible so everyone’s pleasantly surprised when they get there,” explains Pete. “It’s all devised and meant to be that when you leave the exhibition you’ve got a big smile on your face. It’s not work that’s introspective or deep and meaningful in that respect, it’s a joyous occasion. “If you look back on your memories, no matter what age you are, the sun shone pretty much every day. You just remember that, you can’t help but remember good times when you think about the six weeks holidays.” Even without knowing exactly what to expect, with such a big space to fill, the amount of work involved to put the show together must be huge. “It’s a big gamble but worth doing,” beams Pete. “The work started before Christmas. It’s been a process for me and my little team, Chris, Charlie and Lucy and my wife. They’ve all had to help me out sourcing stuff that I need for the show so it’s been a big team effort and I’ve been beavering away in the studio doing all the nice painting stuff. There’s been a hell of a lot of work.” For Pete, the effort works both ways and he’s clear to point out that his intention is to create something much more than an exhibition but an event in its own right. “What I try and do is create an event that has an ‘I was there’ sort of feel to it,” he explains. “It gives more of an air of expectancy. I like that feeling that you’re at something special. In doing that you have to put a lot more effort in as well, it’s not simply hanging some pictures on a wall and walking away and hoping people like them. I’m making people put a space in the diary to come and see it so it’s up to me make sure that it’s worth their while.” I don’t think that will ever be in doubt, Pete is loved not just in Sheffield but the world over, but I’m sure there’ll be a huge amount of people queuing up to form their own opinions. Or maybe just to see themselves and have a big smile on their face while they’re doing it. Which is the whole point of it really, having fun while you take that little trip down memory lane. It will certainly put a huge smile on Pete McKee’s face if you enjoy it as much as he’s enjoyed putting it together.

Pete McKee’s ‘6 Weeks to Eternity’ takes place at Rotherham’s Magna Centre 14-15 May. Entry is free. To see a collection of nostalgia-filled memories and more, visit www.6weeks.co.uk

16 SHEFFIELD’S food scene is booming. And it’s largely thanks to the artisan producers that have started to line our streets and our market stalls. From bread and beer to cheese and chutneys, we’re awash with high quality produce produced right here on our doorstep. There’s a huge emphasis on taste and, of course, if you’re buying local, you’re helping the local economy too. Here we look at a quartet of specialists who are quickly making a name for themselves for being extremely good at what they do. We look at their inspirations, their aims and where you can find them in the city. Tuck in.

What is your product and what do you feel makes it special? Hudson & Bond have the sole distributor rights for the UK for Chocolate in a Bottle (CiaB). We are Sheffield born and bred and supply to retail and the hospitality industry as well as supporting independent local businesses. CiaB is a unique blend of exclusive French sparkling wine created using the classic champagne method, infused with delicate notes of Belgian chocolate. The process is patented, there are no chemicals or ‘flavourings’ in CiaB, the chocolate is actually marinated over three processes. When did you start the business and what inspired you? My husband and I got married in Mallorca last year. Whilst out on a recce for wedding ideas, we stumbled across CiaB being served in one of our favourite places... I loved it. My husband (to be at the time) held on to the promoter’s business card and arranged several bottles as a surprise for me at our wedding in July. On our return I tried in vain to find a supplier in the UK, mainly for personal reasons. I realised it hadn’t hit the UK at all. Being from a sales background, before I knew it I was negotiating exclusive rights to distribution in the UK. I felt so passionately about CiaB I just knew it would be something the people of Britain would embrace (well, most people, of course its not to everyone’s taste).

What are your views on the artisan scene in Sheffield? The Sheffield artisan scene at the moment is hot! The choice of venues to sample artisan foods and drinks is expanding by the day. It’s fantastic how we are so proud of what we do and where it/we come from. Where can we buy your product in Sheffield? Currently you can buy CiaB at Fermental (fruit wines and alcoholic curiosities) in the Moor Market, Mitchell’s Wine Merchants at Meadowhead, Lush Hair & Beauty Salon offer it as gifts or as part of a pamper/wedding package, Loxley Driving Range with their new function area offer the tricycle for events and sell by the glass, and Trippet’s Gin & Jazz Lounge. You will find us at Food Fest, Sharrow Vale market and Eroica to name but a few in 2016. What’s next? Next for us is to have a number of outlets throughout the UK (who feel it is the right product for their establishment) who sell by the glass or bottle. We are also working on various promotional ideas to move the event business forward.

MAKE GREAT COFFEE... AT HOME What is your product and what do you feel makes it special? We source high quality speciality grade coffee beans from all over the world, roast them to exacting standards and then we ship them out to customers all over the UK. Whilst most coffee companies cater to the wholesale market, we focus on people trying to make great coffee at home. We fully embrace the seasonal nature of coffee and track the world’s coffee harvests in order to bring our customers the freshest, most exciting beans. It’s this neverending search for the very best coffee that lies at the heart of what we do. When did you start the business and what inspired you? We are a family-owned, fully-independent business, established in 2012 in Sheffield. I have loved coffee for as long as I can remember. A curiosity around the possibility of roasting my own beans at home gradually escalated into a decision to take on some premises and install a commercial coffee roaster in a beautiful building in the heart of Nether Edge. Our aim is simple – to deliver wonderfully delicious coffee beans to our customers. What are your views on the artisan scene in Sheffield? It’s an exciting time. With so many great food and drink producers in Sheffield, people are seeing that they can enjoy better quality

produce and support the local economy at the same time. Artisan businesses tend to be very quality focused and very aware that they need to offer the very best produce in order to survive. Where can we buy your product in Sheffield? We sell our beans directly on our website and we even offer a free local delivery service. We have also teamed up with a small number of quality focused shops in the local area. We ensure our beans are always fresh and we print a roast date on each bag so the customer always knows how fresh the beans are. Our beans can be found in Birdhouse Tea Company, Porter Brook Deli and Mr Pickles’. What’s next? This year is going to be even busier than last. We are currently looking for premises for our first café, which we’re hoping will be open by the summer. As well as employing highly-skilled baristas to serve beautiful coffee drinks, we’ll also be using the space for coffee brewing classes and a real world coffee laboratory for the roastery. Our entire team will be involved in sourcing green beans, developing roast profiles and working out how to get the best drinks in the cup.

What is your product and what do you feel makes it special? We specialise in cheese and particularly the small producers so we have some of the best British cheese you can get as well as the best of the continental cheeses. We also have lots of Sheffield made products, olives, cured meats, Spanish foods... Andy Swinscoe started out at Hallam University and is now one of the top cheese people in the country. We get lots of our cheeses from him as they are as good as it is possible to get. When did you start the business and what inspired you? We started out in May 2013. We were living in Shrewsbury and Nicky was working in a deli there. We often visited my sister in Sheffield and decided that Sharrow Vale Road just needed a good deli and that we could do it. So we took the plunge. What are your views on the artisan scene in Sheffield? We have met so many really enthusiastic people in the Sheffield food scene and have collaborated with lots on tastings, bread, cheese and wine evenings etc. There is so much quality food available and we stock over 20 Sheffield producers ourselves. What’s next? We have added lots to our range since we stared and are always looking to improve what we offer so that we get the best possible products at reasonable prices. And look out for more events!

PUTTING PRIDE BACK INTO THE PIE What is your product and what do you feel makes it special? We make our proper pies using the finest ingredients we can, all sourced from our local butcher and greengrocer. They both pride themselves on the excellence of their produce, making our job easier. We take our time to then skillfully cook and prepare the fillings, ensuring that we treat the ingredients with the utmost respect. Our own recipe all-butter shortcrust pastry is all produced in-house too, ensuring our fillings are encased in nothing but the best. And we mean encased – we don’t believe in stews with lids.

What are your views on the artisan scene in Sheffield? I contacted a few of Sheffield’s favourite street food vendors during our setting-up stage, and was blown away by the sense of community I found. For example, Trudy and Justine from Percy & Lily’s took time out with me to go through my list of endless questions. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to repay them for that. The community spirit within Sheffield’s artisan scene really is something special, and it feels as though we are all really ‘in it together’.

When did you start your business and what inspired you? We started trading in May of last year which feels like a few lifetimes ago now. I love food, however, it wasn’t until losing my dad that I found myself truly inspired and motivated to make the most of now. After graduating at Leeds Uni, I left my job at Pizza Express and went on a little trip around Italy. An odd place to be inspired to set up a pie business, I know. What struck me the most was the pride and passion that was put into every meal. No meal would ever just ‘suffice’ – so much time was dedicated to preparing and perfecting their country’s classics. Arriving back in Yorkshire, I wanted to put that same pride back into the Great British pie. When I thought of the name Pie Eyed, there was no going back really.

Where can we buy your product in Sheffield? Every Thursday we host a pop-up cafe at Union Street in the city centre. We bring along a mix of our favourite classics and newbies – all can either be eaten in or taken away. We also are increasingly popping up all over the city at various events such as Peddler, pop-up pub visits, corporate events and a good number of weddings this year too. Whats next? The million dollar question! We are now looking to get our products into a range of the excellent delis and cafes up and down Sheffield, so that should keep us very busy amongst our increasingly full diary for 2016.

ART SHEFFIELD 2016 UP, DOWN, TOP, BOTTOM, STRANGE AND CHARM

16 April – 8 May Site Gallery Art Sheffield 2016 takes as its starting point the political, social, cultural, and material histories of the city of Sheffield, enacted and explored through a carefully selected group of international video, film and sound works, as well as three major new commissions made especially for the exhibition by three British artists. The title of the exhibition, Up, Down, Top, Bottom, Strange and Charm is taken from the six flavors (or types) of quark: the elementary particles that make up every atom, and the fundamental building blocks of nature. Unusually, all of the works in the show are either moving image or sound, and the fabric of the city itself is very explicitly activated and inhabited by the exhibition.

DANNY’S THE MASTER

Congratulations to Sheffield’s Danny Willett, US Masters Champion 2016. Having spoken to Danny way back in 2012, we always knew he was destined for great things (of course we’d say that!). Danny’s love affair with the sport began at the age of 12 when he played at Birley Golf Club – not far from his parents’ house – before joining Sheffield and Yorkshire Boys at 17, swiftly followed by England Boys. Danny had grown up in Hackenthorpe, Sheffield, where his dad is still a vicar at Christ Church, and had attended City School in Stradbroke. His next big step was a trip to America, where he played two seasons at Jacksonville State University before turning pro. A special mention also needs to go to Hallamshire Golf Club’s Matt Fitzpatrick who finished 7th at the tournament in Augusta, Georgia.

MIYAGIKYO 10 YEAR OLD

The Return of the Whisky Files With The Shakespeare’s Chris Bamford

SO far, apart from one American whisky in the first volume back in November, all the whiskies featured have been Scottish, so this month we’re broadening our geographical horizons and look at three single malt whiskies made in non-traditional whisky producing countries. Whisky has been made in Ireland and Scotland for centuries. Records of a license for distilling in County Antrim in Ireland date back to 1608, where Bushmills distillery was founded in 1784. Across the Atlantic, bourbon production seems to have started in the late 18th century, similar to the situation in Canada, which was once one of the biggest whiskey producers in the world but has seen its industry decline markedly in the last 50 years. These are the countries which are considered the ‘traditional’ whisk(e)y producers. There are, however, some excellent whiskies produced away from these heartlands across the globe.

The first whisky distillery in Japan was founded in 1923 by the Suntory drinks companies founder Shinjiro Torii near the city of Kyoto, which opened in 1924. Ten years later the man hired to be head distiller, Masataka Taketsuru, founded his own company, which he morphed into Nikka, the other big name in Japanese whisky, establishing the Yoichi distillery on the island of Hokkaido. In the last few years, whisky from both these distilleries, especially Yamazaki, have done exceptionally well at the World Whisky Awards, with several Yamazaki whiskies winning top prizes at the International Spirits. This interest has seen the availability of Japanese whiskies on the market plummet and prices double. One we do currently have in stock at Shakespeares is Miyagikyo 10 year old, from Nikka’s second oldest distillery, established near Sendai in 1969. Both single malt and blended Japanese whiskies are available; this is a single malt, produced, as with most Japanese whiskies, to emulate the Scottish style, which is very popular in Japan. In this case the whisky is a take on the clean, soft and mild Speyside/Lowland varieties. It currently retails for £4 per 25ml measure at Shakespeares. MACKMYRA SVENSK EK

Sweden, just across the North Sea from Scotland, is not a country many people associate with whisky, but has, since 1999, been home to Mackmyra distillery. Drawing inspiration from Scottish whisky, but sometimes taking a maverick approach, a large proportion of their whisky is matured in specially-made Swedish oak casks from trees grown on the island of Visingso, near the distillery, which add a distinctive spicy character to the whisky. Svensk Ek is Swedish for ‘Swedish Oak’ and is the distillery’s flagship regular bottling. Bottled relatively young, as the new oak has a quicker effect on the character of the whisky, with notes of sandalwood, black pepper and ginger from the Swedish oak, vanilla and toffee from the exbourbon barrels. £4 per 25ml.

APRIL 2016 / ISSUE 28

PAUL JOHN EDITED

India is one of the biggest markets for whisky in the world. The best-selling brand of whisky in the world, selling over 30 million cases a year is a blended whisky called Officer’s Choice, made in Kolkata and Delhi (it overtook Johnny Walker in 2013) and several other Indian brands, all cheaply made blends often not necessarily even made entirely of grain, appear in the top ten. These are rarely (if at all) exported but sate the domestic thirst for whisky. There are, however, a couple of excellent distilleries in India looking to Scottish single malt rather than mass-produced blends for inspiration. Paul John Distillers began making single malt whisky in 2008 in Goa, using Indian ingredients apart from a small amount of peat imported from Scotland for the malting process. Edited uses between 15-20 per cent peated malt in its mash and is matured mainly in ex-bourbon casks for no more than five years – the hot and humid, tropical climate of Goa speeds up maturation markedly compared to the Scottish highlands (or the Swedish coast). It’s also worth keeping an eye out for their ‘Brilliance’ bottling, their unpeated standard bottling, and Amrut (their ‘Fusion’ is available at Shakespeares), an award-winning distillery in Bangalore. Paul John Edited is £3.50 per 25ml at Shakespeares.

25 ❬ SPRING FRITTATA ❭

Meet Jon the Veggie... and try his fabulous spring frittata. SPRING has sprung and with it comes a new season of tasty vegetable delights. A highlight in April is the first spears of asparagus and the sweetest Jersey royal new potatoes. There couldn’t be a better time to launch a new regular column on vegetarian food. I’m Jon Tite, a lifelong vegetarian and professional chef for the last 15 years. You can find me and my cooking at the Showroom cinema in Sheffield city centre. We offer a wide variety of dishes, and my team and I pride ourselves on making everything in house; from the cakes on the deli counter to the ice creams on the kiosk and everything else in between. I thought I’d use this column to act as an agony uncle, and answer your questions on vegetarian food; your daughter could be inviting her new vegetarian boyfriend for dinner, or your aunty Jane may have chosen to follow meat-free Mondays. Hopefully over the next few months I can offer a bit of advice on how not to panic, but more importantly to encourage experimentation – it’s not all about meat and two veg! Feel free to tweet me (@jontheveggie) with any questions and I’ll do my best to answer them. I’ll feature one question in each article. To get you started I’ve included a simple recipe for a spring frittata. This dish is perfect to eat as the nights are getting longer and thoughts of summer are creeping in.

Serves 2 Ingredients

6 new potatoes 1 bunch spring onions, sliced into 1cm rounds A handful of peas 5 asparagus spears, sliced into 2cm rounds 4 free range eggs 75ml double cream 65g feta (cubed) A few leaves of tarragon, parsley and mint Salt and pepper Equipment

A frying pan that can go under the grill

Method Cook the new potatoes for 15-20 minutes or until a knife easily passes through them. Slice the asparagus into 2cm pieces. Add to the boiling potatoes when they have about a minute left. Drain and refresh in cold water to stop them cooking. In a medium-sized frying pan heat 2tbsp of olive oil and, over a medium heat, fry off the spring onion for about 5 minutes. Finely chop the herbs and halve the new potatoes before adding to the pan. Sauté for a few minutes until they take on a bit of colour. Keep stirring. Crack the eggs into a jug, add the cream and whisk until well combined. Add the chopped herbs and season. Turn the heat up and add the asparagus, peas and cubed feta. Mix well and after one minute add the egg mix. Turn the heat down to just below medium and cook until the edges have started to harden up. While the frittata is cooking turn on your grill to a medium setting. Put the whole pan under the grill for about 5 minutes. Alternate between the hob and the grill until the frittata feels firm. This takes roughly 10 minutes.

AFTER an amazing first 18 months as a new, start-up business in Leeds, Humpit Hummus has just opened its doors in Sheffield city centre. Offering a totally vegan selection of hummus, falafel, salads and homemade cold drinks, the young business has a loyal following in Leeds and is hoping to create the same buzz in Sheffield. “We chose Sheffield for our second outlet as its a really cool city and close enough to Leeds for us to be able to get here everyday,” said Jonathan. Humpit, located at 45 Leopold Street, is part of the Orchard Square shopping centre and is within easy walking distance of both universities and many local offices.

Spoil your loved ones – and yourself – at Losehill Hall Hotel & Spa. Melanie Jackson takes full advantage.

LOSEHILL Hall Hotel & Spa is possibly the best-kept secret in the Peak District. A gorgeous drive from Sheffield brings us to a narrow lane which leads to the most beautiful setting and property, the only four-star hotel located within the heart of the Peak District National Park. This was to be a rare one night getaway so we were going to maximise the opportunity for a bit of a pamper and, from what we had heard, some amazing food. The Spa

The spa facilities at Losehill House offer a tranquil indoor heated pool with panoramic views over Winhill and the Hope Valley, steam room, sauna and an outdoor hot tub, with dedicated changing rooms. We spent a good few hours in here relaxing with the highlight being the hot tub outside – we went on a very cold day and a quick dash to plunge in the hot tub was well worth the goosebumps as the scenery was just sublime! Onto the treatments... THALGO AROMATIC BACK MASSAGE Enjoy a deeply relaxing massage with a soothing blend of aromatic oils helping to ease tense muscles in the back, neck and shoulders. Appointment Time 40 minutes – £35 This was fabulous. The therapist had a great touch and released a few knots that had built up. I left feeling like I was walking on air!

What we ate We chose from the £39.50 dinner menu but you can opt for the tasting menu. Starters Seared scallop with samphire, confit potato and lemon buerre blanc Fillet of mackerel with capers, golden sultanas and carrot ketchup Verdict on both counts: Outstanding, Michelin Standard Mains Rump of dry aged beef with oxtail pomme anna, smoked Wensleydale custard, grelot and beetroot – cooked to perfection and beautifully presented. Goosnargh guinea fowl with hunter’s sauce, crispy potato, leek, girolle, grelot and carrot – Again cooked and seasoned perfectly and the flavour combination was totally moreish. Desserts Salted caramel crème brulee with foamy apple jelly, apple crisp and apple compote Cheeses – Godminster, Blue Monday no7 (Alex James’s from Blur) – my standout fave – Lancashire Bomb and Y-fenni All washed down with a classic Argentinian Malbec, 2013 Felino by Vina Cobos – the perfect accompaniment.

The Restaurant

Losehill’s awardwinning Orangery Restaurant provides a taste of innovative fine dining in a modern English style headed up by Darren Goodwin. It’s absolutely stunning paired with the views and we knew we were in for something special. The room

The room was very classic contemporary with an extremely comfortable bed, coupled with the location, we slept in so much peace. The breakfast next day was fit for a king and the smoked salmon with scrambled eggs was worthy of the visit alone. It was just a one-night stay but I can truly say we left feeling like we had had a very very relaxing break and couldn’t praise Losehill Hall enough. We shall return. There’s a revolution going on... Meadowhall customers are enjoying the true taste of Spain. WE gave you a little taste last month but now Tapas Revolution has now opened its doors at Meadowhall. Brought to Sheffield by Omar Allibhoy, the super-stylish restaurant, situated upstairs in the Oasis, looks hugely impressive. A tapas-style counter bar/open kitchen adds a touch of authenticity while the strings of Iberico ham from it leave you positively drooling. As we settled into our booth-style table the menu took me back to Barcelona, seeing favourites such as padron peppers and pulpo a la gallega (steamed octopus with potatoes). We were spoilt for choice so and the waitress advised us to go for four or five choices and see how we go. Here’s what we ate: Croquetas de jamón – deep-fried Ibérico ham and béchamel croquettes, £4.75 Torreznos con mojo dulce – crispy pork belly with sweet and spicy sauce, £5.75 Pinchos morunos con mojo picón – marinated beef skewers with a spicy dipping sauce, £6.75

All were outstanding and so authentic. The one that really impressed was the beef skewers, perfectly cooked and spiced to perfection. I just needed the sun and La Rambla. We finished with two fantastic desserts – Torrija (caramelised brioche bun soaked in custard, served warm) £4.75, and Quesada (baked cheesecake with raspberries) £4.50. Tapas Revolution made quite the impression, this is seriously great tapas, as good as any I’ve tasted. Be sure to pay them a visit and then finish off with a bag of Churros while you are wandering The Lanes.

29 This month’s beers, courtesy of Sean Clarke at Beer Central Ltd, take a break from the norm. Coconut beer anyone? drinking world. Here at Beer Central we absolutely adore coconut and this beer is the one we think gives you the most coconut you can get in a beer can. Death by Coconut is a 6.5% Irish Porter with loads of cocoa and dark chocolate flavours, but above all, there’s just one word that’ll keep your taste buds fully occupied… get ready for Death by COCONUT!

BEER is well known as generally being made using four key ingredients; usually malted barley (or another grain like oatmeal, wheat, rye, etc.) water, hops and yeast. In this edition we celebrate three beers that have had a little more added, a little bit of something extra to help develop even more flavours. At Beer Central we have beers that include many additional ingredients like seaweed, rhubarb, plum, coffee and honey. Here’s three that have been really popular recently, we think you’ll be really impressed.

*

PARALLEL PARKIN – 300ml bottles

*

DEATH BY COCONUT – 355ml cans

*

This beer is a rich 8.2% Imperial Brown Ale that was brewed right here in Sheffield in a collaboration between Lost Industry and ourselves at Beer Central. Additional depth and flavours come from the clever addition of sweet black treacle, freshly grated ginger and, last but not least, a big slab of Yorkshire Parkin. The beer was launched during the highly successful Sheffield Beer Week and it’s gone down fantastically well. Available in several of Sheffield bottles shops, grab a Parallel Parkin as soon as you can, it’s been getting great reviews!

SALTAIRE RASPBERRY BLONDE – 500ml bottles

Saltaire Brewery are a multi-award winning brewery who set up in 2005 nearby to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Saltaire village in West Yorkshire. Since then they’ve built up a highly commended range of beers and one of their flagship brews is this one, Raspberry Blonde. Don’t be confused by this, it isn’t really a full-on fruit beer. What we’ve got here is a 4% Blonde Ale which is delicately infused with the aroma and flavour of raspberries. Perfect spring evening drinking! Go and get your lawn mower out and celebrate after with a refreshing and sunny Raspberry Blonde.

31 Eating seasonally Talking tasty food with Mr Pickles’ Paul Widdowson.

WHEN I first opened Mr Pickles’ Yorkshire Food Emporium I wanted to offer everyone the chance to eat seasonally – because I think it’s become increasingly difficult over the years. A lot of shoppers are out of touch with the seasons because supermarkets sell a full range of fruit and veg all year round, regardless of whether it’s in season, or where it’s sourced from. Take asparagus for instance; once only available during its relatively short season of just over a month, it’s now a weekly treat thanks to imports from Peru. Here at Mr Pickles’ we source fruit and veg from Yorkshire based Organic Pantry and Sheffield Organic Growers so the seasons play a huge part in what we stock. Although we don’t have everything all year round, we think this opens up opportunities that can’t always be found in the supermarket. Firstly there’s the chance to cut down on air miles. Rather than relying on food imported from overseas, our customers take comfort in the knowledge that our fresh produce is sourced from

Yorkshire based businesses. Shopping locally also means that your money goes direct to small independent producers who appreciate every penny and reinvest it into the community. Another important factor is the taste. Eating seasonally and locally means eating fresh which has a huge impact on the flavour. Take the asparagus example again – which will taste better? The freshly picked, Yorkshire grown variety or the week old stuff flown in from halfway across the world? Right now, the Mr Pickles’ team is excited about produce coming into season over the next month or so. From pak choi to spring greens and cucumbers to radishes, we’re looking forward to some new flavours on our plates – I’m sure our meals will become lighter and brighter as a result too. I’m especially looking forward to the return of purple sprouting broccoli. Nuttier and sweeter than its bigger brother, purple sprouting broccoli is great simply steamed and served on the side, but I also like to showcase it as the main ingredient of my meal. I cook it with chorizo and serve it with pasta – just scan the page for my recipe. The spiciness of the chorizo works really well with the tender sweet broccoli. If you need any advice on how to eat seasonally, or if you’re looking for some recipe ideas, just pop in to see us at Mr Pickles’ – we’re always happy to help and talk food!

33 HIPSTER Here are are our top styling tips for accessorising your look: WHETHER sartorial or street is your style, Savills is the go to hub of gentlemanly style in Sheffield. Our customers range from tattooed punks and skinheads to dapper gents and those young chaps whose style direction is not quite yet determined. At Savills we cater for everyone and are great at translating ideas, plus emerging and historical trends, into what looks good now. Don’t just take our word for it, check out our contribution to Martin Roach’s awesome book ‘Dr Marten’s – A History of Rebellious Self Expression’. In our contribution to the chapter on Diversity, we define styling evolving and growing as being “more of an expectation of the modern gent to be well-groomed, that now comes naturally as being opposed to being a lifestyle choice. In the past, a man’s style was often a clear sign of his social status or even anti-fashion/establishment stance (as in mods, punks, skinheads etc.): the global breakdown in social stereotypes has impacted on the reduction of expectations of guys to group within a particular style genre resulting in more of a fluidity of style and an integration of many styles that have occurred throughout history.” This is mirrored in the accompanying fashion accouterments that we offer at Savills and the regular pilgrimage from Savile Row of our preferred tailor who kits us out and those customers who are after tailoring their own look. Literally. Tie pins, cufflink sets, hats and leather accessories are also offered for perusal and sale. So, it begs the question, how does the modern gent about Sheffield rock these adornments? To some, styling these masculine trimmings comes naturally, it is handed down from father to son. For others, inspiration comes from friends… or their barber. Yes, we have many mums who bring their sons to us for some style injection and guys themselves who leave our place with a little more inspiration over and above just a great haircut.

* The right odour that you emit goes a long way. Smelling fresh and sharp will also make you feel so too. Whether is comes from your cologne, beard oil, hair pomade or shaving products, it’s one of the most important accessories of any man’s image. * Owning a good pair of cufflinks is a detail that makes a big difference to an outfit. Assuming that you are wearing a double cuff shirt, they will be noticed and can show off your character and personal style. The unwritten rule should be simple and sophisticated. * Pocket squares are an elegant accessory that can be folded in a myriad of ways (see Pinterest for inspiration), but do avoid matching it to your tie. Aim for a similar tone or a sharp contrast to your suit. * No way round having to lug about a dozen keys? Our vegetable dyed ox leather key fobs are hand made in Sheffield and just get better looking with age. * Hats. A hat is timeless fashion piece that has never fallen out of fashion, but in recent years has reemerged stronger and as a key piece of many looks. We offer a range of baker boy, fedoras and pork pie hats. If you are not sure if it’s your thing, pop in for a free try on.

Ah, the art of manly style, we could really go on and on with tips and techniques. Alas time waits for no man, but we will. Pop into Savills next time you are passing to check out how we can sharpen your look. HIPSTER The art of getting comfortable, by Brag Vintage’s Becca Lingard.

music Who we’ve seen and what we’ve been listening to this month.

ELIZA AND THE BEAR

AS the temperature warms we awake from our winter slumber and prepare for the longer days, extra sunshine and increasingly active lifestyle that summertime brings. Perhaps this explains why vintage sportswear styles are making a huge comeback, with eighties track tops, college sweats, silky bombers and American football shirts all qualifying as springtime must-haves. Vintage sportswear appeals to so many as it offers comfort and style in the ultimate combination. Right now, comfy is cool. Male and female styles are crossing over to create a unisex look that appeals to everyone. If the sun is out our favourite look of the moment is a simple white tennis skirt with a vintage velour track top. Sling your favorite leather rucksack over your shoulder to break up the sports vibe. Try adding knee high socks for a twist (and an extra touch of warmth). One thing the sportswear trend doesn’t shy away from is colour. Be bold in your outfit choices, but when in doubt stick to a three-tone colour scheme to maintain a level of coordination.

Becca Lingard

Eliza And The Bear Over the past few years, there’s been a rise in uplifting indie anthems (think: Vampire Weekend’s A Punk) and the singles from Eliza And The Bear’s self-titled album have firmly established themselves among them. New single Friends makes a triumphant opening with the energetic trumpets and shouting harmonies the band is known for. Radio-friendly singles Lion’s Heart and Light It Up are standout tracks, but slower songs such as the gritty Make It On My Own and the piano-laced Cruel give lead singer James Kellegher a chance to show a softer side to his vocals and gives the album more variety.

ALL SAINTS

WE ARE SCIENTISTS

Helter Seltzer The buzzing guitars and interesting key changes give first single and opening album track Buckle a grungey sound that some We Are Scientists fans might not expect. The band has always been rough around the edges, but fifth album Helter Seltzer takes a smoother, yet emotionally darker approach, than their best-known album With Love And Squalor. However, tracks such as In My Head and newest single, Too Late present plenty of sing-along opportunities, whilst Waiting For You and Headlights provide some light relief. Whatever category you want to stick We Are Scientists in, Helter Seltzer has plenty of hit potential.

Red Flag It felt like All Saints would never ever come back (sorry!), but here we are ten years after their last album Studio 1 which, lets face it, was widely ignored. However, this offering shows much more promise. One Strike sweeps us up in melodic 80s guitars and lyrics said to be about the moment Liam Gallagher confessed to his recent affair. Make U Love Me has all the r’n’b sass the girls first became famous for, Ratchet Behaviour is a brilliant dub tune that would go down well in a Jamaican dance hall, whilst the dark and booming title track Red Flag balances minimal verses with poppy choruses. Who Hurt Who is a more mature take on the heartbreak ballad, but die-hard fans will much prefer the catchier 1997 hit Never Ever. Red Flag is a fantastic comeback album full of variety and most importantly, the girls’ gorgeous and familiar vocals.

LIVE REVIEW: JAMIE WOON Plug 2 March 2016

When someone as ridiculously talented as Jamie Woon (or Swoon as I like to call him) comes along, it’s a wonder he has remained under the radar for so long. Debut album, Mirrorwriting was widely acclaimed when it was released in 2011, but it wasn’t until the release of Celebration featuring Willy Mason and the soulful Sharpness from his second album Making Time last summer, that he started receiving the attention and radio airplay he deserves. Nevertheless Jamie Woon has certainly come a long way. Once a one-man performer with the help of his guitar and loop pedals, he has beautifully translated his performances with a full live band including a bassist, keyboardist and drummer. After soulful support artist Jordan Rakei, the main room of Plug was plunged into darkness and anticipation, as the haunting electronic opening notes of Movements seduced the crowd. Woon’s smooth vocals certainly wooed the crowd, but his three backing singers nearly stole the show with their captivating harmonies, matching caps and T-shirts, and energetic gestures. Night Air had the biggest applause from the crowd, whilst Sharpness and Celebration provided the perfect opportunity for a sing-along. A cover of Aaliyah’s Try Again was an unexpected pleasure and gave Woon’s backing singers a chance to demonstrate their perfect and intricate vocals, before Woon returned to the spotlight alone for a heart-melting, acoustic encore of Shoulda. If the Swoon is ever back in this neck of the woods, he is not to be missed. Along with his electrifying band and impressive backing singers, fans and new listeners alike will see why he is one of the most underrated artists our time.

COMING SOON...

You’ll hardly be scratching around for something to do this month; there’s more than enough to keep you entertained, from old school classics to new kids on the block. From a retro standpoint, you can relive the spirit of Britpop at The Leadmill with the likes of Super Furry Animals (26 April) and The Bluetones (29 April). Closer to home, and perhaps quite as retro, Milburn have reformed for a handful of gigs at the O2 (28-30 April). If you’re looking for the next big thing, Alxndr (21 April) at the O2 and New Dawn Fades (22-23 April) at The Leadmill should whet your appetite. Plug have their own offering with a triple-header on 22 April – O Captain, The Leathernecks and The Homesteads all take to the stage. Vant appear on 23 April.

LISTEN IN... KELVIN JONES Stop The Moment

From teaching himself guitar with the help of YouTube, to receiving over a million views in 24 hours on Reddit, the internet has played a huge part in creating this singer-songwriter. As You Wake Up isn’t the most grabbing introduction to an album, but Call You Home more than makes up for it with its tinges of country guitar – the perfect track for your driving playlist. Title track Stop The Moment is the strongest song filled with 80s pop synths, whilst the sadder Even Now is minimal and raw.

STUCK ON YOU Let Martin & Co be the glue that holds your property deal together – and achieve a successful outcome. ANY homeowner trying to sell their property will know it isn’t as simple as putting a house on the market for the highest price possible and waiting for the buyers to come. Most of the time, you need to be clever and utilise all the skills that an estate agent has at their disposal to achieve your desired price. Even in the easiest of sales, there is multiple back and forth between vendor and buyer, solicitor and surveyor, so having an estate agent you can trust to be the glue that holds the deal together over the many weeks is essential. When it comes to expertly marketing property, sales and lettings agents Martin & Co, located on Campo Lane, are one of the best in the business. Face-to-face service is more important than ever and

Martin & Co understands the importance of empathy and honesty at such a stressful time. While great customer service is something the company prides itself on, Martin & Co also deliver on their promise to achieve the best price possible for your property within a time frame that suits you. Branch manager Harriet Cooke has worked in the industry for over nine years and understands how important an honest service is. “Many agents may overvalue your house to gain your custom, but after a few weeks of no interest the agent will start to pressure you to reduce your price, which can be frustrating for those waiting to sell quickly and means losing faith in the agent. We are very realistic with market prices and make sure to sell your property

to a committed buyer in a timescale that suits you, with the least possible hassle.” In a world where everything is just a click away, it can be tempting to turn to the internet to sell your property, but Harriet says: “Research suggests that someone selling online will get on average £7,000 less than if they were to use an estate agent.” So if achieving the highest price possible is top of your list, it’s worth investing in an expert who knows the area and the market inside out. At Martin & Co there is a dedicated sales progression team who work with you to achieve the results you want. And, as well as enjoying the benefits of trusted advisors who live and work in the area, their extended opening times (8am8pm Monday-Friday, 9am-6pm

We’re feeling blue... THE Light Blue range of bikes has a long history. Started in 1895 by J.A. Townsend in Cambridge, they were around at the start of it all, when cycling was cool for the first time and now they have been reborn for a time when cycling is growing and the interest is peaking. These bikes are all made of steel; not just any steel, though, it’s Reynolds Steel Tubing. Now some will not understand the significance of this but it really is something. Reynolds Tubing was developed for the aeronautical industry so is incredibly lightweight for its strength and the bicycle industry picked up on this. This means that you get a steel bike that weighs less than many aluminium bikes so goes faster and is easier to pedal up those fine steep hills that Sheffield is so well known for.

It’s been a while, I know, but I still remember the heavy steel bike I had as a kid, and they still exist. The weight of the bike was in part due to the strength of frame required and cheaper steel has to be thicker to give you that strength. You find a lot of bikes still around like this and I would say we have a generation of cyclists who have never truly experienced riding a steel bike, it’s all been aluminium and carbon fibre, but steel is a different ride experience altogether. Riding a steel bike just feels

right, it’s softer than aluminium and carbon fibre but still very responsive. It doesn’t only feel lighter it looks lighter, sleeker and just right for a bike. It’s the image of Hinault climbing the Alpes D’Heuz in the Tour de France, it’s a bike that you know could take you around the world, you know you can trust it. Steel may not win you a race, it may not give you any KOM’s on Strava, but if you take one of our demo models out for a spin you’ll realise that it is worth considering.

46 Midnight Special

At The Showroom this April. Akira Kurosawa’s Ran

Victoria

Sleaford Mods are the focus of Invisible Britain

It’s time for a new season of films and events at the Showroom. Avoid April showers and take a seat in the cinema for some of the year’s best new releases, old classics, and gems of world cinema that you won’t see anywhere else. Here’s some of our picks for the month ahead.

Sleaford Mods have emerged as the voice of an embittered Britain, and their aim is clear: to give a voice to those who don’t have one. Invisible Britain follows Sleaford Mods on a tour of the UK in the run up to the 2015 General Election and visits some of the neglected, broken down and boarded up parts of the country that many would prefer to ignore. Part tour

documentary, part social commentary, and showing at a one-off screening on Saturday 24 April. Victoria is a cinematic experience that will shake you: a one-take, single-shot film that takes place over one night and early morning on the streets of Berlin. A young Spanish student meets a group of wayward friends in a club and follows them into a world of partying, drugs and crime, but at its core, loyalty and love. A film that perfectly captures the scintillating promise of empty city streets at 4am and is as exhilarating and intense as a film can be. You’ll be talking about it for weeks afterwards. The most expensive Japanese film ever made on its release in 1985, Akira Kurosawa’s Ran is a true classic of cinema.

Stunningly beautiful, ridiculously vast and with some of the greatest battle scenes ever committed to film, Ran is a chaotic, hellish vision of war populated by samurai, emperors, warriors and warlords. If you have any interest in war films or Japanese cinema, this is one of the best! Do you remember E.T. (who doesn’t)? Midnight Special is a film that harks back to the golden days of Spielberg’s sci-fi chase movies. A mysterious young boy with unknown powers is pursued by the FBI, a cult and countless others. What do they want with him, and what will happen if they catch

him? Details of the film are hard to come by, but trust us – don’t read any spoilers. Let it surprise you. The end of the world could well be nigh. If you’d like to dig a little deeper into film, then sign up for our latest Film Studies course – from a land Down Under! See four brilliant Australian films including the stunning crime drama Animal Kingdom and then take part in discussions and lectures on each film. Sign up at our Box Office. See you at the Showroom in April, and don’t forget to sign up to our free loyalty scheme – collect points to earn tickets, drinks and food.
