I Lose YOURSELF

Pete Thompson marvels at the vastness of one of the world’s most beautiful views whilst enjoying the height of luxury.

t’s mind over matter as I set out on an overdue morning run with a captivating view of the dreamy Dolomites.

Revitalised after spending many an hour putting my feet up in the luxurious haven of the ADLER Lodge RITTEN, it was time to put some miles in my legs in the most idyllic surroundings.

I start out on trail number 35 just outside the gates of the plush ADLER, with

little idea of exactly where I’m going. Thankfully all I had to think about was following the clearly marked signs – unlike the famous Austrian who I am following in the footsteps of.

Soon after beginning my route towards Klobenstein, I’m distracted by pictures of the famous Sigmund Freud at the side of the path. I discover I’m running on Freud Promenade in a stunning part of the world that the neurologist and founder of

psychoanalysis clearly savoured visiting every bit as much as I am.

There are Inspiring quotes from Freud on several insightful information boards named in his honour. I stop to read that Freud had written in a letter to his friend C.G. Jung: “Here on the Ritten it is divinely beautiful and comfortable. I have discovered in myself an inexhaustible desire to do nothing, tempered by two hours’ reading in new things.”

I know he felt, as I had become happily accustomed to doing little other than lap up jaw-dropping mountains views from a heated outdoor swimming pool, relaxing in the spa and eating the most sumptuous food in the homely ADLER Lodge.

Motivated by the prospect of returning to unwind in the sauna in my spacious suite before being treated to an ADLER

harmony message, I continue along Freud Promenade with food for thought.

The only sound I can hear is cow bells ringing and birds chirping in a paradise for nature lovers.

Passing meadows, old farms, huge trees handful of hikers as I gaze in awe at the

most incredible mountain ranges on the planet – taking my mind off the fact I’m not yet halfway through my run.

I dip down through trees and am rewarded for joining a trail named Panorama after rising up a slight incline to a vantage point where I take in the most amazing vistas.

With such a spectacular backdrop for my morning adventure in South Tyrol, it was not only the running that had taken my breath away.

I retreat to the pool for more peace and during one of the best massages I have ever had.

There is the feel of a blend of authentic Austrian Alpine charm and a laid-back classy Italian vibe at ADLER – with the most amiable staff making your stay even more special.

Without a care in the world high about the city of Bolzano, the only deliberation during my wonderful stay was at meal times.

Tomato cappellaccio with beef stew and parmesan cream followed by rabbit along the delights that I plumped for.

Using ingredients from their own farm garden and other fresh produce sourced locally, the talented ADLER chefs produce a menu that changes daily – to be paired

I’m also treated to a tasty feast of a lunchtime barbecue in the sun, overlooking wondrous mountains that I can barely take my eyes off.

There is the option of signing up to yoga classes, taking a bike out for a spin or strolling down to quaint villages nearby.

You may struggle to prise yourself away

a balcony to lap up the freshest of air while peering out at the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site of the Dolomites and vast valley below.

While I can’t compare myself to Freud by saying great minds think alike, I had certainly discovered an inexhaustible desire to do nothing during my stay.

As I made the short cable car trip from nearby Oberbozen to Bolzano on my way home, I could not help but think I had been living the dream.

Milton Jones

This is not a musical. Milton Jones is tone deaf and has no sense of rhythm, but at least he doesn’t make a song and dance about it. He has more important things to discuss. Like giraffes…and there’s a bit about tomatoes. You might know him from Mock the Week, Live at the Apollo or Radio 4. Or that time he stood for the Scottish National Party, fought a hard campaign, but in the end had to respect the wishes of the people of Cardiff. A whole new show of daftness. You know it makes sense.
