Habitat is a new mixed group show at Hillsborough’s Cupola Gallery, which runs from 15 March to 19 April.

Over 50 artists responded to the theme and have looked at human, animal and insect habitats. The exhibition brings together a diverse response.

From collections of ceramic sculptures, delicate miniature pieces made from organic materials. through to large scale paintings, textile hangings and relief works, jewellery, photography, printmaking and mixed media conceptual work, there is plenty to see and think about.

rescued from the streets and reconstructed into sculptural forms.

It’s not just the gritty settings of city life drawings of the intimate buttock impressions left on a sofa or a delicate aquatint of children perched on the windowsill of the family home or the delivery driver in his van; the more mundane habitats of everyday life or the hierarchies of corporate culture.

“The animal kingdom and our wilder environments are painted and drawn,

sculpted and embroidered across the exhibition,” said curator Graham Shapley.

“From the micro formations of algae and plant-life on discarded refuse to the bucolic sunny afternoons on the sandbanks of a river. Animals are given emotions or simply make us gaze in wonder at their majesty. The fragility of their habitats can be seen as well, the balance of the ecosystems rests in our hands.”

Caring for Life

Alison (aka Gina!) and Helen have a friendship spanning 20 years and both have lived experience of caring for a loved one with dementia and the challenges associated with it.

They decided to raise awareness of those challenges and raise money to go to by holding an event at High Green WMC, Trust and the Master Cutlers 2025 challenge on dementia.

They approached many of the local businesses in High Green and Chapeltown and were astounded by the level of generosity shown, a HUGE thank you to all of those businesses. Also a HUGE thank

you to all the supporters at the Hospital Charities Trust (particularly Lauren who stepped in at the last moment), all of the performers who gave their time for free (Lady Bacardi, Shay Pesto, High Hopes) and friends and family who went above and beyond to help out, including all those customers of Gina’s in Hillsborough.

Together, Alison and Helen hope that they can keep the conversation on dementia going and encourage the development of much needed support in the community. Their aim is to hold a similar event each year, based on the success of this one.

Spice up your WARDROBE

Leap into April with fresh twists on classic staples, writes Rosie Brennan.

Denim, denim, denim

Tired of jeans and a t-shirt every day? Re-imagined denim is the perfect way to add a subtle twist to your wardrobe without compromising on comfort. Jackets, waistcoats and blouses are brilliant staples as the days get warmer, so why not make them standout?

A structured puffed-sleeve denim blouse, paired with a simple skirt, trousers, or even jeans if you’re going for denim-on-denim, can provide a simple, casual look with a fun little adaptation, for those wanting to spice up their wardrobes in a less bold way.

Denim waistcoats in all shapes, sizes and styles are becoming increasingly popular. Figure-hugging or loose, oversized

texture and layers to an otherwise standard ensemble. Feel free to mix up colour, tone and pattern in your choices.

A denim dress, long or shorter, paired with a simple boot or heel is a wonderful way to dress for the warmer weather while still maintaining an effortlessly elegant casual look. Contrast deep blues with pops of red or orange, and perhaps leopard print for a sprinkle of a trending, modern pattern. Tailor your denim, your way.

Dopamine dressing

Fashion that improves the wearer’s mood, commonly known as ‘dopamine dressing’ has increased in popularity, blossoming particularly in the spring/summer fashion season. Months of miserable weather is being pushed behind us, and so is the misery that comes with it. Britain is of course, still unpredictable, even in the springtime. So, if you can’t feel the sunshine, dress like it!

Gorgeous pastel yellows, pinks and greens perfectly complement one another for a classic casual daytime ensemble made to uplift your mood, and that of those around you.

Don’t shy away from bold colour and pattern: pick up contrasting colour wheel pieces like olive green and bright red accessories, royal blue and bold orange ensembles – the possibilities are endless.

Strong start to THE YEAR

Blundells Hillsborough are already outperforming the previous year.

hat can Blundells Hillsborough say about the start to 2025? Well, it’s been a strong start for them; 2025 continues to outperform 2024 already and last year was an excellent one for them, ending with an award for their Iam sold auction sales.

“Stamp Duty increases from 1 April doesn’t seem to stop new buyers and home movers in their tracks,” said branch manager, Dawn Leaman. “Property demand is very high, but the one thing that is for sure is a shortage of properties coming to market.”

Blundells Hillsborough are having a Big Open House promotion in May so are looking for customers who are wanting to market their properties with a focus to sell. They have a database of buyers looking to purchase in the area if you’re thinking about putting your house on the market. Dawn, supported by senior valuer Scott Jenkins and Countrywide Mortgage Services Broker, Abigail Hudson, leads a strong team, many of whom live locally and have good knowledge of the area and beyond. Together, they serve people

offering property for sale, seeking homes to buy or rent and offer everything from

The branch is one of the market leaders in the area and has been established for many years, becoming a well-known and trusted brand. Being part of the largest estate agency group in the UK (Countrywide Estate Agency owned by The Connels Group), they pride themselves on getting client’s properties in front of more people than any other agent.

“I’ve always said it’s not just about bricks and mortar,” added Dawn. “It’s about people and the journey they’re on. There’s often a very personal reason why people move house and we’re there to support you through every part of that process.

“We take great pride in the positive feedback received from our valued clients,

In 2024, Blundells Hillsborough introduced a new way to buy and sell properties - Modern Method of Auction. This provided customers with speed and

and was also accessible to those buying with a mortgage rather than just cash buyers.

Modern Method of Auction is not just limited to dilapidated or vacant properties; Blundells Hillsborough has seen all types of properties being sold this way, from terraced houses right up to high-end detached properties.

Feeling part of the community is also important to Blundells Hillsborough and these links are further strengthened with the sponsorship of local football team, Wisewood Juniors FC – they can be seen most weekends cheering the boys on.
