The Tarmac SL8 isn’t just fast—it’s the fastest race bike in the world, thanks to a groundbreaking mix of aerodynamics, lightweight design, and ride quality that was once thought impossible. After over two decades and eight generations of development, it’s more than the fastest Tarmac ever—it’s a whole new level of speed. Ready to put your legs to the test?
Speed isn’t just about aerodynamics or lightweight design alone—it’s about a perfect balance of all the key elements. To achieve that, we’ve combined aerodynamics, lightweight construction, stiffness, and compliance in an uncompromising way. Our Ride Science team, using realworld race simulations, confirms the Tarmac SL8 is the fastest race bike ever over the courses that matter: 16.6 seconds faster over 40km, 128 seconds faster over MilanSan Remo, and 20 seconds faster on the legendary Tourmalet climb.
AERO IN EVERYTHING: We’re putting aerodynamics where it counts most—on the leading edge. This results in our most aerodynamic road bike ever, even more aero than the Venge. The new Speed Sniffer nose cone optimises airflow, and by moving the steer tube back, we’ve made the head tube more aerodynamically efficient. Plus, the Tarmac SL8 features the narrowest and most aero seat post we’ve ever designed, reducing drag around the legs for cleaner airflow. Victory has never smelled so sweet.
MINIMUM WEIGHT, MAXIMUM AERO: Thanks to insights from the Aethos, the Tarmac SL8 is designed to hit the UCI’s minimum weight limit while still achieving a fully aero setup. The result is a frame that tips the scales at an astonishing 685 grams—15% lighter than the Tarmac SL7 and the lightest on the World Tour*. By applying lessons
from the Aethos, the design focuses on weight savings in the down tube, seat tube, and rear section, allowing us to eliminate unnecessary carbon layers without sacrificing performance. (*Unless you count Kasper Asgreen's 585g Aethos frame during a Tour stage.)
GOES LIKE HELL, RIDES LIKE HEAVEN: The Tarmac SL8 offers a 33% improvement in stiffness-to-weight over the SL7, pushing legendary handling, responsive performance, and World Championship geometry to new heights. It’s stiffer at the pedals, more precise at the handlebars, and combines all of that with a ride quality that sets a new standard for comfort in race bikes. Thanks to Rider-First Engineering, every rider, regardless of size, gets the same exceptional ride quality and handling. The Tarmac SL8 also delivers 6% more compliance, offering a smoother, more supple ride over rough roads. Its proven geometry and 32mm tire clearance are unchanged from the SL7, ensuring easy adaptation and versatility for larger tires when needed.
BEYOND GENDER: Gender doesn’t determine how a rider experiences a bike, and it certainly doesn’t provide enough data to design gender-specific bikes. That’s why we’ve created the Tarmac SL8 to offer the same top-tier performance for every rider. It’s time to go Beyond Gender.
The S-Works Tarmac SL8 is equipped with the finest components, including a full Shimano Dura-Ace 9200 series Di2 groupset with dual-sided power meter and a Roval Rapide CLX II tubeless-ready wheelset. The world’s fastest frame is paired with the best to ensure optimal performance. All S-Works Tarmac SL8 models come with a Roval Rapide cockpit, designed to save weight and provide the fastest possible leading edge.

h. his mont s t
s the reimagined production of Bat Out of Hell - The Musical spreads its wings for a UK tour, including a week at Leeds Grand Theatre from 2-26 April, leading man Glenn Adamson promises: “Audiences are in for an absolute rock and roll party. It’s larger than life and an absolute riot.”
The show features the music of Jim Steinman and Meat Loaf.
“And it’s everything you’d expect from their fantastic songs,” Glenn adds, “but in a story that’s set in a futuristic, postapocalyptic world. It’s a fantastic night out.”
With a book by legendary songwriter and producer Steinman himself, the musical is set in the dystopian city of Obsidian, which is ruled over by tyrannical leader Falco. Their DNA frozen so that they are destined to remain 18 forever, the Lost boys and girls are living in the tunnels beneath the city. Then the fearless leader of the Lost, the immortal Strat, locks eyes with Falco’s daughter Raven and obsessions threatens to destroy both of their worlds.
Strat is played by Adamson, who says: “He is sort of like Iggy Pop meets Peter Pan, stuck at age 18 for eternity. He falls in love with Raven, but she’ll continue to age while he can never grow older. It’s a dilemma, to say the least.”
The actor is reprising a role he previously played in the West End and on tour in Australia and New Zealand. Excited about returning to the show, he beams: “It has the most incredible music and it’s a really joyous team to work with. We have such good fun and it’s just an incredible show. It has a great fan base and there’s no feeling quite like being in it. The buzz being out there each night is amazing.”
Originally released in 1977, the Bat Out of Hell album - for which Steinman penned all the songs - launched Meat Loaf to rock superstardom and is one of the best-selling in history, having sold nearly 70 million copies worldwide. The sequel, which came out 16 years later in 1993, was another huge success for the duo
For the stage musical, which premiered in 2017, Steinman has incorporated iconic songs from the Bat Out of Hell albums, including the title track, You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth, I Would Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That) and Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad, as well as the previously unreleased song What Part of My Body Hurts the Most.
“The songs are perfect for a musical because they are so theatrical and poetic,” Adamson points out. “He writes these
banging tunes that lend so well to the format. Sometimes in a musical it feels like the songs are shoehorned in, but here they feel they were always supposed to be in a show.”
Glenn knows the musical theatre genre well. He’s been in We Will Rock You, American Idiot, Bat Boy and Magic at the Musicals. And he’s thrilled to be in this new version of Bat Out of Hell, which is inspired by the spectacular arena tour of Australia and New Zealand that he also starred in in 2023.
“It’s a bit like going to a gig but with a great story that’s being told,” Glenn says
of a production that features a dynamic eight-piece rock band on stage and multilevel platforms to bring the story to life. Strat’s love interest Raven is played by Katie Tonkinson, who says of the character: “She’s been kept locked up for her whole life and she’s looking for freedom and exploration and love. She’s still quite innocent, she doesn’t have a lot of knowledge of the world and because she’s so excitable she is quite emotionally reactive to things. That’s a lot of fun to play.”
Katie’s credits include Tarantino Live and she was recently seen as Snow White in Greenwich Theatre’s annual pantomime. She toured in Bat Out of Hell previously, where she covered for the actress playing Raven and got to play the role herself a few times.
Of being cast as Raven in the new tour, she smiles: “I’m so excited about it. As a cover, you don’t necessarily get to delve into the details, whereas actually doing it properly you get to make choices and really explore the character.”

York Gate Garden has been part of Perennial for 30 years.
his year, the wonderful York Gate Garden is celebrating 30 years of becoming a Perennial garden.
Bequeathed to Perennial by Sybil Spencer in 1994, it opened to the public in spring 1995. In that time many gardeners and volunteers have lovingly cared for, preserved and nurtured the garden, giving so much pleasure to garden visitors and the local community that Sybil belonged to.
Little of the original design has changed; it is incredible how 14 individual rooms could be so perfectly integrated into just one acre of garden. A masterpiece of perfection that needs no improvement. The planting has continued to develop: there are so many plants now available that Sybil could only have dreamt of, and we are able to expand the diversity of plants whilst retaining the Arts and Crafts style for which York Gate is known.
Much of the garden has reached maturity and there are areas which will need careful thought over the coming years. In the Dell for example, the white birch trees will potentially succumb over the next decade, a normal occurrence given their age. This will create both space and light, allowing new planting opportunities.
Rest assured, though, that the love and care of all those connected with the garden will ensure that it remains a garden of
and devotion of the Spencer family and their legacy for many years to come.

Re-imagined denim is the perfect way to add a subtle twist to your wardrobe without compromising on comfort. Jackets, waistcoats and blouses are brilliant staples as the days get warmer, so why not make them standout?

Tired of jeans and a t-shirt every day?
Re-imagined denim is the perfect way to add a subtle twist to your wardrobe without compromising on comfort. Jackets, waistcoats and blouses are brilliant staples as the days get warmer, so why not make them standout?
A structured puffed-sleeve denim blouse, paired with a simple skirt, trousers, or even jeans if you’re going for denim-on-denim, can provide a simple, casual look with a fun little adaptation, for those wanting to spice up their wardrobes in a less bold way.
Denim waistcoats in all shapes, sizes and styles are becoming increasingly popular. Figure-hugging or loose, oversized
texture and layers to an otherwise standard ensemble. Feel free to mix up colour, tone and pattern in your choices.
A denim dress, long or shorter, paired with a simple boot or heel is a wonderful way to dress for the warmer weather while still maintaining an effortlessly elegant casual look. Contrast deep blues with pops of red or orange, and perhaps leopard print for a sprinkle of a trending, modern pattern. Tailor your denim, your way.
Fashion that improves the wearer’s mood, commonly known as ‘dopamine dressing’ has increased in popularity, blossoming particularly in the spring/summer fashion season. Months of miserable weather is being pushed behind us, and so is the misery that comes with it. Britain is of course, still unpredictable, even in the springtime. So, if you can’t feel the sunshine, dress like it!
Gorgeous pastel yellows, pinks and greens perfectly complement one another for a classic casual daytime ensemble made to uplift your mood, and that of those around you.
Don’t shy away from bold colour and pattern: pick up contrasting colour wheel pieces like olive green and bright red accessories, royal blue and bold orange ensembles – the possibilities are endless.

Silcoates’ vision of providing a holistic and supporting them to become the best version of themselves is one I share. San Carlo’s emphasis on using the best seasonal ingredients pays dividends, writes Richard Abbey.
Anyone who has travelled to Italy and had the good fortune
probably tell you the same thing; that, whatever region you’re eating in, meals are often simple affairs with few ingredients, yet it always tastes absolutely delicious. This is largely down to the quality of ingredients Italians use and is something they pride themselves on.
I say this from experience; having spent a lot of time with my wife’s family in the south of the country, the mozzarella and tomatoes are incomparable to anywhere else - it’s no surprise that pizza originated in Naples when ingredients are this good. And you could say the same for many of Italy’s regions.
This philosophy of only using the best seasonal ingredients has formed the backbone of the San Carlo Group, which was founded by Sicilian-born Carlo Distefano in 1992. The group now stretches to 25 UK restaurants, including two here in Leeds, as well as numerous restaurants abroad. All have their own kitchen and management teams but abide by these ingrained principles.
“The key to everything is the quality of the ingredients, that is what it comes down to,” said Marcello Distefano, CEO and son of Carlo. “Italian food is based on simple cooking. So if the quality of your ingredients is good enough, then people will come back.”
The city centre Leeds restaurant is located on South Parade, a short walk from the train station and close to Park Square and the Town Hall. It opened in 2009 and was later joined by the Flying Pizza in Roundhay, which last year underwent a major refurbishment.

We probably made the mistake of ordering glasses of wine before ordering our food - a Remigio Bianco for me, a Remigio Rosso (both £8.25 for 175ml) for my wife - but it seemed a shame to change afterwards.
After sharing a selection of Italian bread with excellent sun-dried tomato and black olive tapenade (£6.50) and a bowl of green olives (£3.95) we tucked into recommended dishes of Noci, Pere & Prosciutto (£13.95) and Carpaccio di Tonno (£15.95). You could immediately see the quality in the ingredients. The former was a simple dish of mozzarella, Parma ham, pear and walnuts with each element allowed to shine, whist the sashimi-grade tuna almost melted in the mouth and given extra zing from a sesame and lime dressing.
For main course I opted for Saltimbocca all Romana (£25.25), a classic dish of sliced veal with Parma Ham and a white wine, sage and butter sauce. It’s a familiar Italian dish but one that was executed so well, with the sweet, sharp and salty
My wife chose the seafood mixed grill (£34.95), a generous plate of simplysea bass), as well as a langoustine and a scallop smothered in a garlic and herb butter. Every element was delicious and cooked to perfection.
We complemented both dishes with side dishes of tenderstem broccoli (£6.50) and a tomato and red onion salad (£6.25).
Frangipane alla Pesca and Torta Settevelli (both £8.50). Both continued the high standards with the peaches adding freshness to the almond cake and the almost mousselike chocolate and hazelnut cake proving
to be very light. Both came with vanilla ice things nicely.
San Carlo Leeds showcases the group’s philosophy to the full. Service was excellent throughout and the quality of those ingredients really do shine through.

Taylor’s on the Green, Keighley gets the green light from Graham Clark.
ne thing that always sticks in people’s minds is where they had legal drinking age. Being Keighley, born mine was enjoyed at what was The Lord Rodney in the town which is situated on Church Green - as the name implies just next to St Andrews Church and adjacent to a good-sized car park.
Revisiting this popular Keighley tap and kitchen – retained by Keighley-based brewery Timothy Taylor’s and renamed Taylor’s on The Green, the site opened its
after a huge refurbishment on Yorkshire
Day 2022 – was a welcome surprise.
Taylor’s on The Green combines delicious food with Timothy Taylor’s wide range of award-winning ales as well as an onsite brewery shop. It is a welcoming, friendly and warm establishment that attracts the more discerning customer who appreciates something a step up from the well-known chain pubs. If it sounds a winning blend, it is.
The renovation inside has been completed sympathetically; a touch of modernity is mixed with traditional features including a warm stove, comfortable seating and a separate dining area.
The south facing beer garden will be a sun trap, should we get a decent summer this year. With one of their sundaes or a pint of one of Taylor’s ales to hand this is a good enough reason alone to visit this wellappointed establishment.
“Because we are where we are we’ve never had a bar tap on the site so when we did tours we always used to send them to the Lord Rodney,” said Timothy Taylor’s chief executive Tim Dewey. “We wanted somewhere where visitors and guests can have a bit of a showcase, we’re really happy it’s doing what we wanted it to do. It also allows the community to be part of Taylor’s too.”
Besides all the customary dishes on the menu you might be taken aback to discover some long lost favourites such as Toad in the Hole and the Chip Shop Steak Pudding, the latter of which was my choice of main. Tender chunks of braised and minced beef and onion in Landlord Dark ale in a suet pudding served with mushy peas alongside real Landlord gravy and hand cut chips (£16.50) took me back to the days of my
and chips where Taylor’s beer battered haddock served with hand cut chips, mushy peas, tartare sauce and a slice of lemon (£15) appeared to be a wise choice where
the robust taste of the haddock was not overwhelmed by the beer battered casing. Both of our mains were of a copious serving and served hot straight from the kitchen.
Interestingly many of the dishes have been paired with one of Taylor’s ales to enhance your meal.
If you have room after a very satisfying main the dessert choices continued to surprise on the menu - the Landlord Fruit Cake served with Wensleydale cheese caught my eye through it was the Sticky Toffee Salted Caramel Sundae (£6.50) that proved to be the winner. A guilty pleasure it might have been but then, when the quality is as good as this we can all allow ourselves to be sinful once in a while.
My partner’s Mango Parfait, a mixture of raspberry cheesecake ice cream and white

enhanced the end of what had been a very enjoyable dining experience.
As we concluded on our coffees served with a biscuit - which to me was a huge brownie point as I get so disappointed when a sweet treat is missing from my hot drink

Did you know that Leeds is home to one of the world’s leading manufacturers of jukeboxes? Richard Abbey spoke to Chris Black, managing director of Sound Leisure about how they make more than just machines.
Most people of a certain age – and I count myself in this bracket –will have memories of a jukebox. Whether that’s in a pub, a club or a students’ union, at some point in your life you will have no doubt congregated around one of these music machines, probably spending too much time deliberating about what song to play and then taking great satisfaction when that choice came on.
One of my earliest memories of a jukebox was regular family visits to an American diner that had a Wurlitzer-style jukebox – which was free to use – and mainly consisted of Motown songs with a bit of Elvis thrown in for good measure. My sister and I used to take great delight in taking requests from our parents. Smokey Robinson’s ‘Tears of a Clown’ was always a big favourite.
Later in life there was the students’ union at university – very Britpop heavy (it was
the mid-1990s) – and then frequent Friday post-work drinks at a pub that had one of the best jukeboxes I’ve come across. As we didn’t open until 5.30pm), we normally got free reign and would shovel enough money in to give us a good hour or so of our own personalised tunes, everything from The Cure and LCD Soundsystem to Massive Attack and Talking Heads.
a friend’s house. I was immediately impressed by the fact her dad had a jukebox in the corner of the living room – and they had a swimming pool. Sadly, I never got to pick a song…
It’s these types of memories that Sound Leisure have built a business on and is something they show great pride in.
Initially founded by inventor and electronics engineer Alan Black in 1978, Sound Leisure manufacture classic
jukeboxes in the heart of Leeds. After starting in a garage in Hunslet, the business now occupies a factory and showroom just outside Crossgates and is still owned and run by Alan and his family, making it the oldest single-ownership jukebox company in the world.
company to design, develop and build a commercially viable and widely adopted jukebox platform in the 1970s, Sound Leisure went on to pioneer the early development of digitised music platforms in the 1980s and were responsible for the reintroduction of vinyl jukeboxes in 2016.
In 1986, Alan brought his eldest son, Chris, on board, although it wasn’t quite what the younger Black had in mind for his future career.
“I was intending to become a painter and decorator,” Chris recalled. “We were coming down York Road about two days
said, ‘we could do with a hand in the factory, why don’t you come down?’ Thirty-nine years later… it’s been a long summer holiday!”
Chris is now managing director at the family business, although his father still plays a very active role.
“He’s 80 in June and is still in the building six days a week, he loves it, this is his playground,” said Chris. “He’s still coming up with some crazy designs, he’s a born inventor and can come up with ideas that are light years ahead, like he’s proved so many times. It’s been quite a journey with him.”
Chris’s brother, Michael, is also a director and works at Sound Leisure as does his wife Cath and his son, Alex . It’s a real tight-knit team.
“Whether they’re family or not, everyone is part of the team,” added Chris. “We’ve all got a part to play. Once you get in here, there’s not many people leave. We’ve got staff who are well into their seventies and a lot have been here for 30 years-plus.”
Sound Leisure make two different styles of classic jukeboxes: the familiar 1940s dome-top ‘Wurlitzer’ style and the 1950s with either vinyl (7” or 12”) or CD and all machines have Bluetooth so you can stream
your favourite music platforms through them. They may look retro but inside they’re packed with the latest technology.
Whilst Sound Leisure was formed to initially supply jukeboxes to the hospitality trade, they how sell 90 per cent of everything they manufacture directly to somebody’s home. Of this, 65-70 per cent are exported to the likes of America, Germany, Switzerland and, more recently, Dubai.
The machines don’t come cheap – you’re looking at between £10,000 and £12,000 for a new jukebox – but you only have to undertake one of the factory’s tours to see how much work and how much skill is involved in making one of these classic machines.
Every machine is hand-built and such is the build quality that the jukeboxes last for generations and are often passed down through families.
Different stages of the production process
“We tell the apprentices when they start that when they build a jukebox, it’s got to outlive them,” said Chris. “We want quality and we need passion. You can’t build these and not get excited.”
The factory is home to its own wood and metal shop, it has electronic design teams, software engineers, creative teams, a plastics shop and a repair centre.
Sound Leisure also has a branch down in Nottingham where they make all the circuit boards – but everything is put together in Leeds.
One of Sound Leisure’s biggest selling points is that every machine can be customised to a client’s own personal tastes, whether that’s through everything is built on site, the company can accommodate the majority of requests, however unusual.
American country singer Luke Combs who wanted a bespoke machine to use in the VIP area on his tour. Guests were given tokens to put in the jukebox which automatically played a song and depending on which one it played determined which prize they won.
“You could win a keyring or a hat and
then if you got the gold prize… we had to write special software to control the room
streamers could go off, true American style,” recalled Chris.
You can view many of Sound Leisure’s customisations in the on-site showroom in Leeds. It’s the type of room where you can’t help but smile when you walk into it. Jukeboxes line two walls which are also adorned with retro neon lights and pictures of their many customisations.
licensed to use the ‘Wurlitzer’ brand name
are incredibly popular. You can view and experience both styles at the showroom and, trust me, the sound is superb.
“The Wurlitzer name carries so much kudos all over the world,” said Chris.
“When we tell people we build jukeboxes, nine times out of ten they say ‘do you build a Wurlitzer?’. We can now say that we do
In 2016 Sound Leisure was named as one of the top 100 manufacturers in the UK, as judged by a panel of leading industry experts alongside companies such as McLaren Automotive, Airbus and BAE Systems. They were awarded
the Yorkshire Post ‘Exporter of the Year’ award in 2019 and the highly prestigious ‘Manufacturing Guild Mark’ in 2020, which is only bestowed on companies which demonstrate high standards across seven assessment criteria including design, product development, manufacturing stability.
Over the years, Sound Leisure has
to the factory and have featured on some well-known programmes including The Discovery Channel’s ‘How It’s Made’ and The Science Channel’s ‘Machines – How They Work’.
“We say we manufacture memories,” continued Chris. “It’s not just about building a jukebox, it’s your memories of what you remember around them, everyone has a song that means something.”
It’s something that he gets asked a lot but does Chris have that ‘one song’?
“On the vinyl machines I think something like Fats Domino ‘Blueberry Hill’ sounds fantastic,” he said. “But I’ll change every week, next week it could be Johnny Cash, it depends what mood I’m in.”
Sarah Jane Palmer’s latest exhibition in Doncaster has opened up her work to a whole new audience - and with good reason.
Art, however subjective, should be accessible to all and multidisciplinary visual artist, Sarah Jane Palmer, has created a recent portfolio of work that has extra emphasis on being able to be enjoyed by those with visual impairments.
Whether blind or partially sighted, all can experience the 12 works that make up ‘Periphery’ through touch or sound.
This latest exhibition, which runs at Doncaster’s The Point until 16 May, was inspired by family tragedy; Sarah’s father lost his vision in 2017 due to a brain tumour and afterwards described intricated iridescent lace-like patterns in his peripheral vision, a phenomenon known as Charles Bonnet Syndrome.
“It was something
I’d never heard of and so it opened up a whole project of research for me,” explained Sarah. “It was a really scary time and [my dad] would describe these patterns that were a bit like net curtains, which pricked my ears up because we’ve got family heritage to lace design. I just thought I’m going to start trying to paint and draw what he’s describing.”
Sarah applied for funding from the Arts Council and worked with the ophthalmological department at the
“I just kind of set off on a mission to raise awareness of different visual needs, impairments and decided I would make it intrinsic into the new work I was creating that there was a tactile element so anybody who is blind or partially sighted could access the work through sound or touch,” Sarah added.
The whole project took two years to complete. Sarah worked with a local company called Cut-Tec in Barnsley, who did all the laser engraving of the work so the patterns of the paintings and drawings are all touchable for people who are visually impaired. She also worked with a sound artist from Leeds and there’s an

“On the opening night, four people from
the work and touch through all the pieces,” said Sarah. “Their response and reaction to that was brilliant. They said it was a brilliant experience that they’d not had before, a lovely journey. They were very appreciative.”
The experience of creating this body of work has changed how Sarah works and she’s already starting to think what comes next. Seeing how visually impaired visitors have reacted to the experience of being able
she’ll be looking to bring tactile elements to her art in future.
As well as being passionate about art, Sarah is also hugely passionate about education and works with both the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and The Hepworth Gallery to deliver workshops to both school-aged children and adults. This can be anything from sculpting techniques to painting and
“Both those places [YSP and the Hepworth] only employ practising artists, they have what’s called artist educators who are artists not teachers delivering workshops,” explained Sarah.
Although born in Melton Mowbray,
has her own workspace at Bloc Studios. Her path to education came from unhappy experiences at school and a desire to use creativity as a tool to succeed.
“I always wanted to be an artist but felt like the education system had failed me,” Sarah explained. “As someone who was dyslexic at a time when dyslexia wasn’t recognised, I was made to feel like I was stupid and didn’t come out of school with

Through this experience she gained a
lot of skills and understanding of how to integrate creativity as an extra tool for learning rather than it being a standalone practice.
