EVER since the first teaser trailer appeared almost a year ago, the hype for this seventh instalment in the much-loved saga has gained unfathomed momentum and, let’s be honest, we still don’t really know what it’s about. Pick the bones out of what we do know and there’s some new good guys – Rey, Finn and Poe Dameron – and some bad ones too – Kylo Ren, Captain Phasma and Supreme Leader Snoke – centred around the First Order (the evolution of the galactic Empire?). Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Peter Mayhew reprise their roles as Han Solo, Princess Leia and Chewbacca respectively although the role of Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker is still shrouded in mystery. Has he turned to the dark side? No doubt it’s bound to be epic and will break the box office record recently set by SPECTRE.

THE HATEFUL EIGHT 8 January

ON SCREEN…

QUENTIN Tarantino maintains his love for the Western (following Django Unchained) with this postcivil war tale about a group of bounty hunters who seek refuge during a blizzard. The film reunites Tarantino with some of the actors from his most recognised films, including Samuel L. Jackson, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, Kurt Russell and Jennifer Jason Leigh. The soundtrack has been supplied by the legendary Ennio Morricone.

CREED

15 January

SYLVESTER Stallone continues his boxing legacy with this seventh instalment in the series. Having re-entered retirement, Rocky Balboa agrees to train and mentor Apollo Creed’s son, Adonis Johnson. Having grown up not knowing his father – who died at the hands of Ivan Drago in Rocky IV – it’s down to the former World Heavyweight Champion to show the young fighter who Apollo really was and prepare him for his toughest fight yet.

Disover hidden treasures lurking in the Closet...

DO you have a wardrobe full of clothes you’ve hardly worn? Then head to the fashion boutique with a twist that has opened its doors at The Forum. Closet Treasure Boutique buys and sells new and pre-loved clothes, accessories and jewellery for him and her. Whether it’s a special occasion dress you’ll never wear again, shoes that don’t fit or a handbag that’s ‘just not you’, clear out your closet and make some cash; Closet Treasure do the hard work for you. It’s a free service – all you need to do is make an appointment, bring in up to ten items of pre-owned but faultless garments and they’ll sell them in the boutique and online via their website. Closet Treasure sell on a 50/50 basis so you’ll get exactly half of the sale price. Boutique owner, Jessica Fogarty, opened the business in

October following initial demand from family and friends. She said: “I started selling my own clothes online a few years ago, and following the success of that, I began to sell on commission for friends and family. “Opening a boutique was the next step and The Forum, attracting 10,000 people every week, seemed like the ideal choice for people to come and shop these closet treasures. “We have various labels in store from Topshop to Michael Kors and Ralph Lauren. Indulge yourself in luxury for less.”

❬ Funky and unique ❭ Contain yourself, if you can, and get ready for Kelham Island’s stunning new addition – Krynkl.

WHEN The Milestone first opened in 2006, there were many a folk who perhaps scratched their heads in disbelief. What were they doing opening a gastro pub, let alone one in the red light district? Hats off to Matt Bigland and co, then, who were clearly bestowed with the kind of foresight that many of us wish we possessed. Work began in the former industrial area in the 1990s. Cornish Place was the flagship development with further plans for more bars, restaurants, apartments and commercial space. It’s been a slow process and it’s only in the last few years that things have really taken flight; Kelham Island is finally living up to its early promise. Apartments have shot up in their hundreds, there are more places to eat (The Grind, Craft & Dough, Urban ¼) and drink (The Fat Cat, Kelham Island Tavern, Shakespeare) and do business (The Chimney House). And things are about to cranked up another notch or two. Krynkl will be a

revolutionary new space made entirely of shipping containers. Designed by architects CODA and managed by Fernie Greaves, work on the mixed-use development commences in January 2016 with work completed by, wait for it, March 2016. The first of the 24 containers have already starting winging their way to the Shalesmoor site, the first of its kind in the city, and feedback has already been off the scale. The Milestone have already committed to taking the ground floor space as well as the roof terrace and are already planning two new exciting ventures. “The huge pull of the project was to do something different for Sheffield,” explains Matt Bigland. “We have been to container bars and event spaces in London and the opportunity to have something like this in Kelham Island is amazing. “Kynkl brings a funky iconic building to Sheffield. It allows everyone to have a play and take a leap of faith and push some boundaries in what people expect a building’s usage to be.

We really like the idea of building a vibrant working environment around several good businesses whilst adding what we think is missing from Kelham. – Matt Bigland

“The roof garden on top is obviously something special. We plan to have a bar with wood-burning fires and events happening throughout the calendar. It is unique for Sheffield and we can’t think of another place which has such a huge space on top of the building with views across the city.” While a bar may dominate the top of the four-storey building, Matt has something different in mind for the ground floor, something that will complement the scheme perfectly. “On the ground floor we have plans for a great coffee experience. We love the coffee shop vibe you get in big cosmopolitan cities and feel this will work well in an experience like Krynkl where everyone is focused on building businesses.” Other confirmed tenants include TRIB3, a boutique gym experience, Paul Hood of Fellas

is opening a vintage barber shop and they’ll also be a photography studio. The units will be available from 150 sq ft upwards with standard rents on simple lease terms. To give new businesses a helping hand, Matt has joined forces with the likes of Tim Bottrill at Fernie Greaves, David Cross at CODA and entrepreneur Jill White to launch a new start-up initiative specifically for Krynkl. When launched in the new year, the panel will give new businesses the opportunity to pitch their ideas, in return, they could win a year’s free rent within the container complex. “We are looking for people who can bring something to Krynkl that is unique and adds to the collective,” explains Matt. “I find this a hugely passionate area as we went through so much to get The Milestone off the ground. This is a great project to help other businesses.” We’ll be waiting with anticipation. www.krynkl.co.uk

16 The homes are super-insulated and practically airtight. Most of the heat for the house is generated by what is already in there – appliances, pets and the residents themselves

The development at Little Kelham is slowly taking shape – and attracting national recognition for its low-carbon credentials. LITTLE Kelham is making a big impact in Sheffield, and beyond. The project, which incorporates 157 low-carbon digitally-enabled houses, public areas and space for retail and leisure, is quite unlike anything else in the city and stands alone on a national level, too. The development, by Leeds-based Citu, is being created in the Kelham Island quarter of Sheffield – an intriguing area which for decades was home to heavy industry but subsequently slipped into decline as the steel industry contracted. In recent years though, green shoots have begun to spring up in the area – the biggest of which is Little Kelham, which proudly sits across the sites of two former factories – Eagle Works and Green Lane Works. Much of the beautiful Victorian architecture from the original factories remains, and will be lovingly renovated and restored to serve a variety of purposes for businesses and community alike. But perhaps the most engaging aspect of Little Kelham is the homes themselves, which are as far from a conventional new build as it’s possible to get. The Citu House has sustainability and minimising waste at its heart – these core considerations are literally ingrained in the homes from the foundations up, from the very first piece of timber framework, to the way residents live, work and play in the finished property. Built with sustainable materials, from trusted suppliers, the homes, which range in size from one-to-four bedrooms, are super-insulated and practically airtight. Most of the heat for the house is generated by what is already in there – appliances such as TVs, showers, kettles and toasters,

Climate change is something that nobody can ignore, every industry and individual has a part to play and we think Little Kelham is a small step in changing people’s mindset. pets and the residents themselves. The level of insulation in the walls, around the doors and in the triple-glazed windows, means that hardly any heat generated in the house escapes. Fresh, clean, filtered air circulates through the house via a state-ofthe-art ventilation system and on a warm summer’s day, the homes have their own outdoor spaces to catch some sun. Residents are able to control and monitor energy use in their home from a smartphone or tablet. The digital platform allows users to set the temperature and remotely boost heat and turn appliances on and off. The program builds a history of user’s preferences to heat the house to just the right temperature at the right time. Little Kelham is an embodiment of developer Citu’s core value – that of sustainability and the fight against climate change. The company has always believed that there is a better, more sustainable way for companies to build homes and for people to live in them. Aisling Ramshaw, marketing director at Citu, said: “For us, minimising waste just makes sense and that shapes everything we do. “For example, why use an unreliable, expensive, fossil fuel like gas in our homes when we could just build smarter houses which use less energy and can take advantage of technology like solar PV. “Climate change is something that nobody can ignore, every industry and individual has a part to play and we think the Citu House and Little Kelham is a small step in changing people’s mindset.” The next phase of Little Kelham homes will go on sale in the New Year. 40 years a fishmonger

Care to share?

Talking food with Mr Pickles’ Paul Widdowson.

ONE of the things I love most about food is the sharing element. There’s nothing nicer than sitting down with friends and family to enjoy a good meal. Of course sharing a meal isn’t just about passing the gravy, or having someone appreciate your efforts to get the perfect spuds. It’s about catching up, sharing stories, ideas and being with the ones you love. Sadly, we’re all so busy that we just don’t get the chance to do this as much as we’d like and I don’t know about you, but this means I treasure every family meal that little bit more. At Mr Pickles’, sharing food goes beyond the dinner table – each and every member of my team loves nothing more than a good old foodie natter. So, every month I’ll be here sharing some of these food stories with you. From top tips and seasonal recipes to foodie anecdotes, I’m looking forward to chatting food with you all. It’d be great if you could join in the conversation at @mrpicklesfood too. Talking about sharing, we’re fast approaching the biggest sharing season of all – Christmas! A time for gifts, season’s greetings, mince pies and silly office parties. But the highlight has got to be sitting down to Christmas dinner with the family – the meal of the year and the one time that everyone pulls out all the stops. Which is why I’m going for goose this year. Thanks to our high welfare suppliers, I know we’ll have some incredible birds in store. There’s duck and turkey too, but my top pick has to be goose. It evokes images of a perfect Dickens’ Christmas and it’s a super rich and delicious meat – I just know my family are going to love it. I’ll be making the most of the whole bird by using the giblets to make the gravy and I think I’ll serve it with a tart apple sauce – to cut through the fat and richness a little. If you’re not sure what to cook this year, why not pop into Mr Pickles’ for some help with recipe ideas? We’re taking Christmas meat orders up until 7 December and we have all the trimmings you could ever wish for. But whatever you choose for your Christmas dinner this year, we hope you get to share it with the people you love! Merry Christmas from myself and the Mr Pickles’ team!

COD & Cockle may be a newcomer to the Moor Market, but proprietor Barry Turton is no rookie when it comes to Sheffield market trading. As a teenager he began his career in Castle Market in the early 1970s, working as a fishmonger’s assistant. It was here, under the watchful eye of his mum, that he learnt the trade, developing a deep appreciation for fine quality fresh fish and seafood. After a few years away from market life, in 2014 he returned to his roots and founded Cod & Cockle with the aim of sourcing the freshest, finest quality produce possible. Now entering their second year, Barry and team are getting ever busier as more people discover the quality and range of products on offer. A self-confessed fish nerd, Barry is always happy to help and advise on cooking and preparation. In fact he considers it part of his job to share knowledge with customers, providing the personal service not found at high street chains. If you’d like to join the growing number of people (and restaurants!) who are becoming Cod and Cockle regulars, you’ll find Barry and the team on the fresh food aisle of Moor Market.

Florian Grau, head chef at Marco’s New York Italian, shares a fantastic festive recipe – great for a gift.

CHRISTMAS PUDDING SPICED RUM MAKES 750ML

70cl bottle dark rum 2 vanilla pods 2 large cinnamon sticks 2 large star anise 3 whole cloves 75g light brown muscovado sugar Peel of one orange METHOD 1. Pour 100ml rum into a small saucepan. Using a small sharp knife, split the vanilla pods down their length. Add to the pan along with the cinnamon sticks, star anise, cloves and sugar. Add your orange peel (you can eat the flesh!). Slowly warm the rum over a low heat, stirring to dissolve the sugar being careful not to boil. 2. Pour the contents of the pan into a large sterilised jar, then add the remaining rum. Once cool, tightly seal the lid and shake vigorously. Leave the rum in a cool dark place and give it a good shake every day to mix the spices. 3. After two weeks (still plenty of time!), strain and discard the spices and orange peels. Decant the rum into small new sterilised bottles. Yours to gift, or simply perfect as a gift to yourself. Cheers!

amfor Chris B

WELCOME to the second edition of The Whisky Files. This month, I have picked three whiskies made at the same distillery, but three different styles of single malt scotch. The three malts featured in this article are all distilled at the oldest family-owned and independent distillery in Scotland, Springbank, founded in 1828. HAZELBURN 12 YEAR OLD. 46% ABV

Hazelburn is most readily available as a ten year old, but the 12 year old was actually released first and is finished in sherry casks for added complexity, accentuated by the light nature of the spirit. With chocolate, marmalade and marzipan notes, it is tempered by clean barley and spicy oak. Quite a moreish whisky, really! SPRINGBANK 12 YEAR OLD – CASK STRENGTH. 53.1% ABV

The malt range which takes its name from its home distillery is the most widely produced of the three brands, across a range of ages – the ten year old is most widely available but 15, 18 and 21 year old releases are available. The 12 year old is always a cask strength release, with a raisin and liquorice element imparted from the cask and a lingering peaty finish. LONGROW RED – 11 YEAR OLD AUSTRALIAN SHIRAZ. 53.7% ABV

This is the heavily peated range, in production since 1973. The malt is dried over a peat fire for up to 48 hours before double distillation. Releases include ‘Peated’, letting the smoke do the talking, a complex 18 Year Old and the ‘Red’ series, finished in red wine casks. There is an intense peat kick but also background rich grape fruitiness. All Springbank bottlings are released non-chill filtered and natural colour. The three selected whiskies are all available at Shakespeares for £3.90 per 25ml measure and bottles retail for around £50. If you have any questions about any of the malts in the Whisky Files please email chris@shakespeares-sheffield.co.uk

Sean Clarke, from Beer Central Ltd, has some hearty recommendations for the party season. Raise a glass! SIREN CARIBBEAN CHOCOLATE CAKE 7.4% Bottle 330ml Siren (based in Berkshire) are at the forefront of modern UK brewing and the recent return of their outrageous collaboration with Cigar City Brewery (Florida) has been highly acclaimed. This is a dense, rich and luxurious stout. Hand-roasted cacao nibs from the USA give hints of tamarind and soft lemon. The malt provides coffee and roast notes in abundance, while the experimental OCC hop variety offers orange, chocolate and coconut flavours. Ageing on Cypress Wood is the icing on the cake. Pure bottled indulgence. It is absolutely beautiful and very popular with the drinkers of Sheffield! BRADFIELD – FARMERS BELGIAN BLUE 4.9% Bottle 500ml & mini-keg 5 Litres This really is a Sheffield favourite and following its launch in early November the whole city goes mad for its local Christmas beer. This unique brew has Christmas berry overtones, a plumy purple colour and a following so loyal that we sell bottle after bottle after bottle! MAGIC ROCK CANNONBALL 7.4% Can 330ml The unofficial kings of Yorkshire craft brewing, the muchanticipated recent release of new fresh cans has catapulted Magic Rock to another level. Cannonball is an India Pale Ale in the true tradition, high in alcohol and massively hopped. A beer to drink as fresh as possible, tropically fruity, resinous hops compete against a sweet malty backbone, while a rasping bitterness builds to a mouth puckering finish. A real hop bomb and now widely available in the distinctive and superbly designed new cans.

A MODERN APPROACH

Sushi Express 8 Milton Street, Sheffield, S1 4JU Tel: 0114 279 7669 Email: info@sushiexpress.org.uk

Want to know the ins and outs of Japanese cuisine? Here are Sushi Express’s favourites. BRITISH demand for Japanese food has soared in recent years. According to research from market analysts Kantar Worldpanel, in the past year Brits ate an extra 12 million tonnes of rice and noodles – 12 million tonnes. Guess how many rolls of sushi and bowls of soup that makes? Well, while we don’t have the answer to that, we do have the answer to great Japanese food right here in Sheffield: Sushi Express. Run by Dading Zhen and Jinan Li, the pair have dedicated the last few years to creating fresh, healthy and delicious Japanese food, something which has proved popular with both locals and students. “We consider many of our customers as friends,” Dading says. “We know many of the overseas and local students well and this helps us to find out exactly what they want and to learn what is popular so we can develop our menu.” Their chef has six years’ experience in Japanese cuisine and is passionate about creating exciting, tasty dishes by combining traditional methods with a modern approach While many of us have at least dabbled in a taste of sushi, Japanese cuisine offers such a great variety that for beginners, browsing a menu full of unknown dishes can be quite overwhelming. For those in search of a little guidance, here are a few of Sushi Express’s favourites and top tips. Kaisen ramen (100 per cent tonkotsu soup base, homade black garlic oil)

Deluxe Dragon Maki

BENTO

A traditional bento consists of rice, fish or meat, and one or more pickled or cooked vegetables. SASHIMI

Sashimi is raw fish, or shellfish, usually served with wasabi and soy sauce. To fully enjoy the flavour, put the wasabi on the fish and then dip in the soy sauce (rather than being mixed into the soy sauce), as the flavour of the soy sauce overpowers the fragrance of the wasabi. SUSHI

There are several forms which sushi takes, two main styles are nigiri-sushi and maki-sushi. Nigiri-sushi is a finger of rice moulded in the hand with toppings such as a small fillet of fish or tamago-yaki (omelette flavoured with dashi stock). Maki-sushi is sushi rice and other ingredients rolled up in nori seaweed. A thin roll (hoso-maki) has a single ingredient and is cut into six pieces and a thick roll (futo-maki) has a mixture of ingredients and is cut into four pieces. DONBURI

Donburi is a style of Japanese cuisine that features savoury dishes served over white rice and includes over 60 recipes that cover a wide range of flavours consisting of fish, meat and vegetables. Donburi meals are served in oversized rice bowls and are usually enjoyed with a bowl of miso soup. OPENING HOURS: MondaySaturday 12-10pm

RAMEN

Ramen is a Japanese noodle soup dish. Nearly every region in Japan has its own variation of ramen, from the tonkotsu (pork bone broth) ramen of Kyushu to the miso ramen of Hokkaido.

Portland House is Ecclesall Road’s newest micropub. THE last few years have been quite spectacular for beer and beer lovers. The delicious golden-brown liquid has been rejuvenated, with small breweries across the country reinventing what we once knew as the beer industry. One such brewery, Welbeck Abbey Brewery, is located on one of England’s finest country estates, Welbeck Abbey. Established by head brewer Claire Monk in 2011, the brewery enjoyed increasing success year-onyear and so she decided the time was right to expand their offering and open up a microbar. Portland House launched at the end of October on the former site of Cooplands Bakery on Ecclesall Road. The venue seats just 40 people, but manager Tom Purcell says it was exactly what they were looking for. “The brewery wanted somewhere that would fit in with their brand and there’s a really great atmosphere here. They were looking for somewhere quite intimate and this is the perfect size.” Having worked in Sheffield pubs for 12 years, Tom’s relationships with local businesses have proved

invaluable in sourcing unusual and local produce for the bar – including pork pies from Waterall in the Moor Market and wines from Le Bon Vin in Attercliffe. Of course, as a breweryowned pub, it’s no surprise beer is in abundance. There are always at least two Welbeck beers on draught – at the moment Henrietta and Red Feather – and for the festive season, Coco Noel and Santa Baby IPA are available. There are also guest beers on offer from various other breweries, as well as a rotating guest keg and an everchanging selection of bottled beers, including a range of American, British and Belgium beers. “A lot of trendy beers feature big flavours at the moment, with craft keg beers being really popular,” Tom says, who likes to keep a finger on the pulse of what’s new in the drinks industry. “We like to be selective in what products we offer, but there is a fantastic variety.” If you think you don’t like beer, chances are you just haven’t found the right one yet, and Portland House is the ideal place to discover something new.

If beer really isn’t your cup of tea then fear not, because Tom puts just as much effort into tasting and handpicking high-quality wines and spirits. Their spirits are sourced from just down the road, from Starmore Boss on Sharrow Vale, where owners Jeff and Barry work hard to find intriguing and unusual spirits. At Portland House you can even enjoy the official world’s best gin and tonic: Napue gin accompanied by Fever Tree tonic. While the extraordinary range of drinks is enough reason to visit Portland House, it’s also ideal if you’re in search of somewhere to relax and enjoy a coffee/tea and cake, including the

renowned Tipple Tails fruit cakes. Olives and cheeses are also available for those with a less sweet tooth. With a stack of board games in the corner, relaxed music and a friendly atmosphere there’s no better place to catch up with friends, discover new tastes or while away an afternoon. Pop in today to see what’s on offer and receive a warm welcome from Tom and his team. Opening hours: Monday/Tuesday 5pm-11pm Wednesday-Sunday 12pm-11pm Portland House 286 Ecclesall Road, Sheffield, S11 8PE Tel: 0114 266 9511

New Year’s Eve Party Join Portland House for their prohibition style New Year’s Eve party. Expect everything 1920s style; drinks, jazz music and brown paper covered windows. Tickets cost £15 and include a welcome drink, buffet (cheeses, olives etc) and fizz at midnight.

Coming soon Tasting nights

At the end of January, Portland House will host weekly tasting nights on a Monday or Tuesday. If you have ever wanted to know which beers go with which cheeses, this is your chance. Other tastings will include port, wine, and gin. Prices are £1520 and will include around six different tastings.

29 With over 60 years of service, Zing Vaa is a real Sheffield institution. THE Zing Vaa spans the generations. As the first Chinese restaurant in the city, no doubt your parents and maybe even your grandparents have visited at one time or another in the six decades it’s been open. Despite the longevity of service, and the loyal clientele who keep returning, the Zing Vaa continues to evolve and has made recent changes to its menu to ensure it remains at the forefront of Chinese cuisine in the city. Indeed, the restaurant has a lot more competition than when it first opened in 1950. Dim Sum, a dish traditionally eaten on a Sunday, takes a more

prominent place on the menu in-keeping with its increased popularity. Make sure you try the hark au (king prawn dumplings), Chao Zhou dumplings and, for the particularly adventurous, steamed chicken feet in black bean sauce. The restaurant also specialises in Szechuan cuisine, the bold, spicy food style from the Szechuan province of South West China. There’s a good selection of dishes to try, although the menu warns ‘this cuisine is not for the faint-hearted’ – but if you like spicy food you’ll love it. Stand-out dishes include beef slices poached in hot chilli oil, dressed with the

famous Szechuan peppercorn, poached fish with pickled salted cabbage in a magic wok, and twice-cooked pork belly with chilli and pepper. If you’re more of a ‘sweet and sour’ kind of person, many of the recognisable dishes are still available, including a good selection of vegetarian options. Take a break from the norm though

and you’ll be surprised at what’s available. Zing Vaa 55 The Moor, Sheffield, S1 4PF Tel: 0114 275 6633 www.zingvaa.co.uk

The latest craze to sweep the shores has landed in Sheffield. And customers are queueing up to get their hands (and feet) on a Swegway. “WHATEVER you do, don’t break your hip”. My fail video addict boyfriend has seen more than a few hilarious hoverboard-related scrapes so I suppose I shouldn’t have expected anything less than fair warning as I headed to Ecclesall Road to try out what is pitted to be this year’s number one Christmas present. But he needn’t have worried. Within minutes of my first wobbly go on a Swegway – at first clinging for dear life to the business’ co-owner Carlos Forbes as he patiently guided me around the shop – I’d got the hang of it and began to see what all the fuss was about. It was the sight of singer Chris Brown gliding through Cannes on one of the electric self-balancing boards that first caught the attention of Carlos and his girlfriend and business partner Laura Hodgkinson, who set up Swegway in September. The Ecclesall Road shop was opened on 9 October and, to put it mildly, business is booming. They’re averaging around 200 sales a week and, while 95 per cent of those are made online, the shop has been a massive hit and has attracted customers from as far as Leeds, Hull, Manchester, Newcastle and even Oxford. “We tried to buy a Swegway this summer but there was nowhere in the UK selling them,” said Laura. “We saw a gap in the market, decided to go for it, and are now the only UK shop to sell genuine Swegways. I think part of our success is because people like being able to try them out before they commit to buying one, they like knowing that they’re buying a genuine product that has a 12month warranty, and they like speaking to us face-to-face.” The new business venture is a departure from the couple’s previous job roles. After graduating with a chemistry and

maths degree from the University of Leeds, Laura spent the following eight years working in marketing in London before moving back to her native Sheffield last year, where she met former construction worker Carlos. They’re incredibly proud to have an entirely Sheffieldbased business – even the warehouse is in the city, on Bramall Lane – and they employ eight local staff. With prices ranging from £299 for a toddler version to £549 for a Bluetooth-enabled rapid charge model – and many more varieties in between – Swegways are not the cheapest gadgets, but they’re definitely one of the most fun. You can whiz around at up to ten miles an hour (trust me, it feels a hell of a lot faster) and it’s not just kids snapping them up; a 70year-old customer recently bought one and loved it. Laura and Carlos’ sights are firmly set on expanding the business further. “The boards are always evolving and we’re really keen to explore other eco-friendly, futuristic transportation or gadgets, such as electric bikes and drones,” said Laura. “But for now, we’re just pleased to be serving the queues of people travelling from miles around to check out our Swegways.” Opening times: Monday to Friday: 9am-5.30pm Saturday: 10am-5pm Sunday: 11am-4pm Swegway 527 Ecclesall Road, Sheffield, S11 8PR Tel: 0114 263 1614 www.ukswegways.com

36 Traditional Turkish barbers

Stylist Samuel Dunleavy, 35, is the owner of Capelli hair salon. I HAVE been at Capelli since 2004 and loved every minute of it. Hairdressing gave me passion and direction. It’s so important to me for each client to have great hair and walk out of the salon satisfied. With party season upon us you’ll want to look amazing. Here are our tops tip for achieving a super-stylish look: 1. Always use salon quality shampoo and conditioner and blow dry products. 2. Work your brush right through the length of your hair for a smooth and shiny finish. 3. Wrap your hair around a large round brush to create soft curls and movement. Remember, try not to touch your curls until you’ve finished. Your hair is still setting when its hot so if you play with them, they’ll loosen and your effort will be wasted. 4. Gently use your finger to create a pattern that runs from your temple to the back of your head. Apply some hairspray and massage the hair in a circular motion to create some root lift. Capelli 81 Junction Road, Hunters Bar, Sheffield, S11 8XA Tel: 0114 268 2691

EVOLVING trends, that has seen discerning gents forego the hairdresser in preference to a traditional barbershop experience, has led to a remarkable renaissance in ‘proper’ hair cutting and wet shaving. Firmly establishing itself in the city centre is Anatolia, a traditional Turkish barbers in every sense of the word. The vision was to create a fresh modern space with a very contemporary feel and a firm emphasis on customer service. Haircuts start from £9, with discounts for OAPs and children. The Anatolia full set, which comes highly recommended, includes a cut, wash, shave, facial steamer, hot towel mask and head massage for £28. Students receive a ten per cent discount with valid ID. * To find out more, visit Anatolia, 150 West Street, S1 4ES. Tel: 07467 300088. It’s open Monday to Saturday 9am-6.30pm.

Looking for a new salon or hair stylist? IT’S got to the point in your hair’s life (or your patience is wearing thin), when you feel that it’s time for a change of salon or stylist. Whether you’re fed up of the same techniques being used or they’re just not listening to what you want from your cut, there are some points to consider to ensure you make a change for the better! DO: research the salon. Many salons now have reviews online. DO: look at what services are on offer. If there’s you’re looking for but can’t find it, contact the salon and ask. You can learn a lot from a phone call. DON’T: assume that your chosen salon offers all of their services every day. You might find that a particular stylist who offers what you’re looking for only works certain days. DO: check out the environment and general cleanliness of a salon. DON’T: disregard a salon if you feel it looks too trendy or expensive from the outside.

DECEMBER 2015/JANUARY 2016 / ISSUE 25

There is usually a pricing structure varying from newly qualified juniors’ right up to directors, with more variations in between to suit all pockets. You’ve found it/him/her – now what?

DON’T: let the stylist shampoo your hair before you’ve had a consultation. Let them see/feel your natural condition, texture, colour and how you’ve styled it. DO: be honest about what you want. DO: be receptive to the advice and options your stylist gives you in response to your needs and ask questions to clarify how they intend to proceed. DO: recommend your family and friends if you’ve enjoyed the experience. MAXIMUM SATISFACTION d) e e t n a r ua (g

DON’T give the standard issue presents. Step out of your comfort zone and don’t just please them… delight them! (See tips 2-5).

Every Christmas the usual conundrum faces most people. What to buy the fella in your life? IT is generally acknowledged that buying for the men is a challenge. One which usually results in the usual standard issue – socks, tie set, supermarket bought shaving foam set or that old chestnut… pyjamas. Women are adept at dropping big hints but if men need something, they normally just go out and buy it, leaving a gift idea wasteland in their wake. But buying men a gift shouldn’t be an obligation. It should be fun, with the gift tailored to the individual resulting in the satisfaction of knowing that you’ve got it right come Christmas Day. Here at Savills we’re increasingly known as a ‘one-stop man shop’ and at Christmastime we come into our own with our Devonshire Street shop being a must go to mecca for wives and girlfriends, not to mention those guys in the know who want to share the Savills experience with their brothers and dads. Our retail emporium is a veritable Aladdin’s cave of cool and unusual ideas, many of which are now available online. We’ve used the knowledge that we have built up over the years to compile a top five list of dos and don’ts and sure-fire gift winners.

DO go for quality classics. Cashmere. 100 per cent wool. Leather, men love leather, period. Buy a good quality leather wallet, key fob, tool roll, belt or messenger bag. All our leather goods are handmade, vegetable-dyed beauties. Good British brands are always a winner too. Think Dr. Martens, Fred Perry, John Smedley… it’s hard to get it wrong with these brands. We also stock a range of awesome baker boy and pork pie hats, perfect for looking stylish on cold winter days. DON’T do novelty. Bart Simpson Christmas socks are never a good look. Ever. DON’T get him something for work. Who wants to wake up on Christmas morning to be reminded of the office? Christmas is all about down time. DO buy him an experience. Savills gift cards are the perfect way to treat him to the Hot Towel Wet Shave experience, 45 minutes of pure relaxation that’s hard to beat. Or for those men who are yet to discover the delights of Savills, introduce him to us with a gift card for a hair cut with free consultation, product advice (and beer!) included. He’ll love you forever!

Finally, always remember, in the wise words of that awesome orator and epitome of the Savills stylish attitude, Winston Churchill: “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”

WINTER WARNING IT sort of jumps out at you from behind here in Britain, one day you are cycling in the sun to and from work then a weekend goes by and all of a sudden the dark has somehow extended itself into your daily commute. A lot of people give up on their bike when this happens, can’t blame you, it’s like having the pub close early or the carnival ride stop prematurely. That said, keeping yourself on the bike over the dark winter months can be of great benefit and is surprisingly easy with the right kit. It’s not about flogging yourself against the harshest of weather conditions battling 50mph winds to climb up Rutland Road, it’s about taking the opportunities when they arise. Don’t be scared of the cold. Layer up and get some thick gloves, once you start riding you’ll not even notice it’s only two degrees out there. Lights are your best friend at this time of year and having as many as you can fit on your bike is good. A high powered light to show you all the potholes and keep you away from the kerb edge is a must. At the rear you should resemble the Christmas tree you’ll be putting up soon. The extra weight isn’t going to

GURU damage your record Strava time especially over the two-mile commute so don’t worry too much about that. If you keep on your bike over winter you’ll reap the rewards. Remember how you felt in April when you got back on your bike after your last hiatus? Well that feeling just keeps going all through winter and if you are hard enough or mad enough you could try riding in the snow (yes that’s me). Russell Cutts, Russell’s Bike Shed

After blazing a Latin trail in the early noughties, Cubana is now firmly established as one of the top party venues in the city. IT was 15 years ago that Cubana burst onto the Sheffield nightlife scene, offering a burst of joyous Havana sunshine on a sleepy back street a short shimmy away from the city centre. Looking at all the multicultural restaurants, bars and music venues in Sheffield, it is easy to take the wide variety of food, drink and sounds from around the world for granted. But it hasn’t always been such a hotbed of diversity, and Cubana was one of the trailblazers that helped breathe new life into Sheffield. Now the salsa venue is celebrating a landmark anniversary… and it is as fresh and vibrant as ever. First unleashed on an unsuspecting public in November 2000, Latin music, salsa dancing, spicy tapas food and colourful cocktails all blended, bringing people together in a fun and friendly setting. Now based in Leopold Square, the Latin beat pulses stronger than ever.

First Steps Co-owner Adrian Bagnoli first got into Latin music whilst visiting a popular Brazilian nightclub called the Maracanã in Florence, Italy. Adrian was amazed by the lively atmosphere and was convinced that this was exactly the kind of night out Sheffield needed. “Back then, the only type of dancing you’d find couples doing would be the slow, smoochy style at the end of the night, in a cheesy nightclub,” explains Adrian. “The only Latin music people knew was The Gipsy Kings and La Bamba. We decided the time was ripe to introduce a bit more culture to Sheffield.” Adrian and friends Toni Dente and Gian Bohan started by launching a Viva Salsa night at local nightclub Club Uropa (formerly Isabellas), booking Brazilian DJ Marcus Vinicius and a live Brazilian band called Viramundo for the opening night. An astounding 700 people attended the first event in June 1996, making Sheffield’s first salsa club night an undeniable success. “This really paved the way for us,” says Adrian. “Calendar News came to cover it and the atmosphere was incredible. It gave us lots of confidence and we started booking touring bands from Cuba and Latin-American bands based in London and Manchester.” The final Viva Salsa took place in May 2000 and it was then that Adrian joined forces with Brad Charlesworth and Kito Morales to open Cubana on Trippet Lane.

45 Cubana Mk. I – Trippet Lane Getting the look of the venue right was just as important as creating the authentic tapas dishes and cocktails, so Adrian employed talented architect and close friend Paul Brady, to capture a true Latin vibe. “We offered something different – people felt like they’d discovered something great tucked away on this backstreet in the city centre,” says Adrian. “There wasn’t another tapas bar in Sheffield at the time. “We’d already built up contacts with the Latino community from the Viva Salsa night, so they were on board as soon as they discovered we’d be offering live music.” Cubana had fast become a popular venue for couples, as well as a great place for singletons to mingle. Many long-term couples comment on how they first met or how they had their first dates there – proof that music is the food of love.

Cubana Live One of Cubana’s proudest moments was hosting a night at Music In The Gardens Festival 2010 in the Botanical Gardens. Cubana Live attracted a sellout crowd of over 3,500 people and helped raise thousands of pounds for local charities. The extravaganza offered some of the most popular Latin artists, including Omar Puente and his band. The group arrived in chauffeur-driven 1957 Chevrolet convertibles and pulled up in front of the stage, before delivering an amazing performance.

Special Guests Lady Salsa

Over the years, Cubana have been honoured to welcome many memorable guests. A visit from legendary Cuban band the Buena Vista Social Club in 2007 was certainly a highlight and Adrian was overwhelmed when the band returned after their second Sheffield City Hall gig in 2008. Not least, because the highlight of their second visit was when Buena Vista’s pianist Rolando Luna took up the offer of playing the classic Latin favourite ‘Guantamanera’ alongside the house band on a piano specially hired in for the occasion. “It was just incredible, the place erupted and the atmosphere was electric – it was a very special night,” confirms Adrian. Once at their new premises at Leopold Square, Cubana was given the ultimate seal of approval when Dr Aleida Guevara, daughter of famous Latin American revolutionary Che Guevara, visited for dinner and posed for a picture underneath the portrait of her father. Other notable guests include Panamanian boxer Roberto Duran, once considered to be the best poundfor-pound fighter of all time, who visited in 2003 and the cast of Lady Brad and Adrian with Salsa following a performance at the Roberto Duran (centre) Lyceum Theatre.

Cubana Mk. II – Leopold Square After 14 years building up a reputation as the most vibrant independent Cuban bar in Sheffield, it was time to say goodbye to Trippet Lane. Adrian discovered the two-level venue, formerly Platillos in Leopold Square, had become available. After a discussion with business partner Brad, they decided the time was right to move. Adrian and his team enlisted the help of local artist Paul Staveley and Paul Brady once again to recreate Cubana’s trademark style. Just four days after closing the Trippet Lane venue, the new Cubana was opened. “The final Saturday night at the old Cubana felt like a New Year’s Eve party; people were looking forward to a potentially exciting future,” Adrian recalls. “We opened with a big party on Thursday 24 July. Over 400 people turned up and it was an incredible atmosphere. We knew right then, from everyone’s reaction that it was going to work.” Now offering two floors for two different nights out, diners can enjoy the cosy upstairs area or party downstairs. Cubana turn over around 300 diners on a Saturday night, many of which stay all night. “You could walk in at 7pm and end up staying until we close at 2am,” says Adrian. “There’s great flavoursome food, courtesy of Chilean head chef Fabrian Cruz who has been in charge of kitchen affairs since day one, exotic cocktails, friendly customer service, chilled-out live music and vibrant music to dance to – all under one roof.” Cubana’s Salsa In The Square has also been a huge success. Since Cubana has taken over hosting the Bank Holiday Sunday extravaganza, attendance numbers have doubled and Adrian looks forward to offering a live Cuban salsa band, salsa lessons, dance demos and more in May 2016. So, after 14 years brightening up Trippet Lane and a successful first year adding a vibrant mix of Cuban flavour to Leopold Square, how will Adrian and his team be celebrating their success? “Of course, there will be a big party, but Brad and I are going over to Cuba in January too,” says Adrian. “It’s such a great place and we’ll get loads of inspiration. We’ll be treating that as our 15th birthday present.” If you’re looking for a lively venue with the full package, Cubana can provide the delicious food, the colourful cocktails and the live entertainment to start your festive season. Catch Ash at The Leadmill on Thursday 10 December

After 23 years of ups and downs, Ash are back – and on form. THE past 20 years have been something of a rollercoaster for Ash. They’ve gone from a three-piece to a four-piece then back to a three-piece after the departure of Charlotte Hatherley in 2006, their second album 1977 almost left them bankrupt (despite NME naming it one of the 500 greatest albums of all time), whilst the critically-acclaimed Free All Angels saved them and remains their most well-known album, featuring chart-toppers, ‘Shining Light’ and ‘Burn Baby Burn’. After releasing their sixth studio album Kablammo! and selling out their UK spring tour earlier this year, Ash are back for an extensive December tour. Ahead of their gig at The Leadmill on Thursday 10 December, frontman Tim Wheeler talks to Phoebe Seymour about the highs, the lows and why he’s looking forward to playing the legendary Sheffield venue.

Ash’s sound has changed so much over the years, how does Kablammo! compare with previous albums?

We’ve stuck to our early sound. We’ve looked back at the song-writing that made 1977 and Free All Angels so good. But we also wanted to create an album that would sound good live as a threepiece. We’ve been touring for a while without bringing out any new material so we really wanted to rejuvenate our live set. Kablammo! came out in May and we’ve had a really good response. What’s your favourite track on the new album and why?

I really like ‘Cocoon’. It’s a very simple song, but it’s got a lot of early ingredients of Ash in it. It’s good to remember to keep it simple sometimes. You’re playing The Leadmill this month. What can we expect from the show?

It’s going to be great because

it’s a place we’ve loved playing over the years. We like to play the hits and some newer stuff. They all go down very well. One of our first ever UK tour dates was at The Leadmill with Elastica. The night we were playing, Justine (Elastica’s frontwoman) was ill so we had to step in and… not headline, but let people come and see us anyway. But it was cool. Ash have had their fair share of ups and downs over the years. What have been the highlights and lowest points?

Highlights… 1995 when we released ‘Girl From Mars’. That changed everything. And… the second album didn’t do too well and we were pretty close to bankruptcy after that.

want to let that go. We focussed really hard on the songs to come back with Free All Angels so another highlight was getting ‘Shining Light’ in the charts and it becoming a hit – that really saved us. In 1997, you headlined Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage on the Sunday. It was still early days for the band. How did that come about and how did you feel?

We headlined the Other Stage on the Friday night and luckily we were still hanging out. It was pretty cool. We didn’t have a lot of material to play at that point, but I think we did quite well and saved the day. I remember looking out from the Pyramid Stage and it was really magical.

What kept you going?

What does the future have in store for Ash?

We were so young and felt like it couldn’t be over so soon. It was a dream to be making music, so we didn’t

We’re not sure what direction it’s going to take yet, but a new album will hopefully be on the way next year.

THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS Estate agents Morfitt Smith are backing a campaign to bring festive cheer to some of South Yorkshire’s poorest youngsters. AS we scour the shelves to grab the latest on-trend toy for our children or gift sets for the teenagers in our lives, spare a thought for those who will be waking up to no presents on Christmas Day. One in three children are living in poverty in South Yorkshire – that’s approximately 76,000 children – and this is why Morfitt Smith estate agents has teamed up with Hallam FM Cash For Kids to launch Mission Christmas. All you need to do to help support this cause is to buy one extra present this year. It can be anything from essentials such as clothes and bath sets to toys and entertainment – just make sure they are suitable gifts for newborns, babies, children or teenagers up to the age of 18. If you prefer, you can donate money either online, in person at Cash For Kids’ Herries Road head quarters or you can text HALLAM to 70808 to donate £5. Morfitt Smith are the official drop off point for your Christmas gift donations and with branches in Banner Cross, Hillsborough and Crookes, you’re never far from your local branch. Hundreds more local businesses have also signed up to become drop off points to make this year the best fundraiser yet.

Every Morfitt Smith branch will also be promoting the campaign with a name the bear competition. To enter, just give the bear the best name you can think of and donate £1 to Mission Christmas. The bear will then be donated as a gift. Mission Christmas is an annual campaign, and as usual, the Hallam FM team will be out on their sleigh, spreading Christmas joy to the children of South Yorkshire, collecting gifts from the drop off points and getting involved in Christmas light switch-ons. The Morfitt Smith team will also be getting into the Christmas spirit by helping out at the Cash For Kids head

quarters, handing out presents in Christmas fancy dress costumes. The estate agents specialises in selling, but also rent properties all over Sheffield. Joint director and valuer John Morfitt has worked in property for over 30 years and spends much of his time visiting clients, whilst co-director Paul Batty is in charge of the dayto-day running of the branches. Together, they are dedicated to providing a warm welcome and a personal service. “Christmas is such a lovely time of year for bringing friends and families together and we all remember the excitement of waking up on

Christmas morning to find out what presents we have, but not everyone is as fortunate,” says Paul. “Mission Christmas is such an important and worthy cause to ensure that every child has a smile on their face on Christmas morning.” Last year, Mission Christmas helped 17,000 disadvantaged and hospitalised children have a merry Christmas with approximately £750,000 worth of gifts. This year, the team are hoping to reach even more children. If you want to help a disadvantaged child this Christmas, drop your gifts into your local Morfitt Smith branch until Wednesday 23 December. For more information, call into one of their local branches. Alternatively, you can donate to Mission Christmas at www.hallamfm.co.uk/mission or text HALLAM to 70808 to donate £5.
