Welcome to CityMag... Greetings to all and welcome to this relaunched edition of CityMag. Some of you may remember us as plain old City Magazine, a quarterly lifestyle magazine distributed throughout the city centre for the last six years or so. Well, I’m pleased to say that you’re going to be seeing a lot more of us – 10,000 copies to be precise – which will be distributed monthly as of the new year. Our biggest change has been the introduction of publishing manager Melanie Jackson, who brings a wealth of experience. No doubt you’ve seen her around the city centre over the last couple of months. As well as a completely new look, we want to make this magazine about you and this great city of ours. We’ve spoken to musicians, marketeers, foodies and hipsters (and much more besides) and they’ll all tell you what a great time it is to be involved with everything that’s happening in Sheffield. It’s a very positive place to be and we want to get to the heart of it. We hope you enjoy reading this issue – do let us know what you think – and we’ll look forward to seeing you for our bumper December/January edition. Remember, if you’re hip, happening, are hosting an event or just have a great story to tell, please get in touch and who knows, you could be gracing these pages some time soon.

It’s great to be back in the magazine world and I’m so happy to have joined Regional Magazine Company to relaunch CityMag. Though Sheffield born ‘n’ bred, for the last 18 months I’ve worked out of the city so I’ve not been in the heart of town as much as I would have liked… all I can say is wow! Sheffield is clearly on the up and we want to be a huge part of that. My vision is to develop CityMag into a true city centre magazine and give you, the Sheffield folk, a platform to have a shout about what’s going on in our beautiful city. It’s been a privilege to bring this ‘all-new’ magazine together through meeting some amazing talents and business owners whose passion is infectious. Enjoy CityMag, feel free to send me anything you feel should be heard and I look forward to the magazine evolving. I’d like to give a special thanks to Geo Law for the amazing front cover – LOVE IT! And of course to all the other contributors that have put their trust in me. PS. Don’t forget to download and use the Layar app to scan the mag! Melanie Jackson Publishing Manager

PETER PHILLIPS SOLO EXHIBITION

29 October-25 November 99 Mary Street www.99mary.st Pop art takes centre stage once again at the fantastic 99 Mary Street (following the Peter Blake show earlier in the year) as the present a comprehensive exhibition by British artist, Peter Phillips. Regarded as one of the preeminent artists of the pop art movement, Phillips continues to delight with his new work proving as relevant as that of 50 years ago. His work ranges from oils on canvas to multi-media compositions and collages. Phillips is a pop art player of the highest calibre and is rated alongside his American counterparts, Warhol and Lichtenstein, as being a cornerstone of the genre. * To give the exhibition even more kudos, the gallery have had two special prints created for the show, based on pieces first produced in 1962. These will be available in a very small edition of only ten each and include special foils in the printing.

By 1970, Steve McQueen was at the top of his game. Hot off the back of classics like The Magnificent Seven and The Great Escape, he was Hollywood’s swooninducing anti-hero, a king of cool and the notorious ladies’ man. A racing fanatic, his already-legendary status allowed him to begin production on a passion project about the greatest test of driving skill in the world: Le Mans, the 24-hour car race in France. This moving documentary, directed by Gabriel Clark, takes the viewer inside the mind of this driven, complex movie idol as he fought to save a film plagued with problems.

STEVE JOBS 13 November

Danny Boyle returns to the big screen with this biopic of Apple Inc’s co-founder Steve Jobs, played excellently by Michael Fassbender. The film is set backstage at three iconic product launches, ending in 1998 with the unveiling of the iMac. Steve Jobs takes us behind the scenes of the digital revolution to paint a portrait of the man at its epicentre. Kate Winslet also stars.

A blend apart A new coffee house and bistro has been making waves at the bottom of The Moor since it was opened by the Lord Mayor of Sheffield.

THE stylish new Brew & Bean – which offers alfresco dining, wifi with an alcohol licence on the way – has transformed the former housing association building at 24 Cumberland Street. Roy Young, who developed the idea, said: “I really wanted to develop a bistro and coffee house concept that oozed style and ambience; offered fantastic food and drinks and was run by the best trained staff you could find. It’s not just about the coffee, it’s the people that make the difference. The menu offers allday breakfast, panini, pizzas, sandwiches and more. Sandra Barley, liaison manager for The Moor, said: “Brew & Bean is set to be a huge asset for the area and is representative of the kind of quality businesses we’re keen to attract to this end of the city centre. “The venue is perfect for anything from business meetings to afternoon teas. I can see it being a big success.” It currently opens Monday to Saturday from 8am-4pm. 14 Whether you’re drinking out or eating in, have you ever had it so good? Welcome to tasty town!

The Return of the Whisky Files I’M Chris Bamford, manager of Shakespeares pub on Gibraltar Street, West Bar, on the edge of the city centre. We have a range of 100 single malts and 125 whiskies in total, one of the largest in Sheffield. Each month I will be showcasing three of the whiskies in our range (with occasional

daliances with other spirits as we also have an extensive range of rums and gins). For this edition I’ve picked three very different, but all relatively young, malts to highlight the variations in taste it is possible to achieve, starting with the basic premise of distilling a malted barley mash.

OCTOMORE 6.1

Made at Bruichladdich distillery, on the island of Islay, this is the peatiest whisky commercially produced – possibly the peatiest it is possible to produce. It is bottled at a mere five years old to emphasise the peat character, which is smoky and intense, although there is also a slightly sweet spiciness as well. Presented in a unique tall and slim black embossed bottle, it is unadulterated by chill filtration or watering down at 57% ABV. Octomore is one of the most expensive spirits in our range, again defying the assumption that the older the whisky, the higher the price. It’s £6.30 for a 25ml measure at Shakespeares and a bottle retails for around £100 (although as it’s released batch by batch it may be a different version). BENROMACH WOOD FINISH – CHATEAU CISSAC CASKS, DISTILLED 2006 BOTTLED 2014

Benromach are another distillery, which like Bruichladdich (which was resurrected from closure in 2000), has enjoyed a new lease of life in the last 20 years. This release was firstly aged in first fill bourbon casks (as in first time a spirit other than bourbon has been filled into the casks) for six years and then ‘finished’ in casks previously used to age Chateau Cissac French red wine for 20 months before bottling. It has a sweet, rich and fruity flavour imparted from the wine cask, along with some wine tannins balanced by vanilla and just a hint of

bonfire embers from the lightly peated malt. It is non-chill filtered and bottled at 45% ABV. We sell Benromach Wood Finish for £3.30 a single measure. A bottle is around £45, although stocks are limited as it is a one off release. CORSAIR RASPUTIN

The last whiskey (as the Americans spell it) I’ve selected comes not from the dark Scottish highlands but from sunny Nashville, Tennessee (or possibly Bowling Green, Kentucky – they have two sites). Corsair are a maverick American craft distillery and microbrewery founded in 2008, known for doing things a bit differently. This is no exception – first Darek Bell and Andrew Webber brewed a Russian Imperial Stout (hence the mad monk connection) which they then distilled and passed the vapours through a bed of hops, the result of which was aged in a charred oak barrel. This created an outrageously different whisky, with a classicly sweet American whisky aroma spiced up by distinctive hop notes while the flavour is complex, initially floral and spicy but with more ‘stouty’ flavours developing such as chocolate, coffee, vanilla and caramel. Rasputin sells at Shakespeares for £3.90 a 25ml measure and I would be very surprised if you can buy a bottle in the UK any more as it was a one off experimental batch, although other Corsair whiskies are available.

What’s on your plate?

The new (karate) kid on the block – Mr Miyagi Revolving Sushi Bar – has got sushi lovers in a spin.

JAPANESE restaurants are still a relatively new concept for Sheffield and even revolving sushi bars are a rarity. The recent opening of Mr Miyagi Revolving Sushi Bar in the bustling heart of Division Street, Sheffield is therefore a very exciting event for local food-lovers. This is made even more exciting by the fact that the dishes at this 40-capacity restaurant are amazing value for money in comparison to similar eateries. Their delicious bowls of noodles and hot rice dishes are only £4.90, whilst all their colour coded plates are assigned different prices starting from £2. So depending on your budget – and how hungry you are – you can eat as much or as little as you like. Also, look out for their great value days including Orange Wednesdays (not to be confused with the telephone network deal) where you can get any orange plate for £2.60 and Pink Weekends, where you can get any pink plates for £2 each. And it’s not just cold sushi you can grab off the 28-seater revolving bar. There is also a wide selection of sushi, rice and noodle dishes to suit every dietary need including a number of vegetarian options. All their sushi and hot dishes are made by their experienced chefs fresh on the spot, so if you do have any food allergies, they will be more than happy to accommodate you. Chef Michael Ng has 15 years of experience and graduated in Hong Kong, China, where he learned his trade from a Japanese master, so you are guaranteed an authentic dining experience. However, if you are feeling more adventurous, Mr Miyagi is proud to offer a whole range of seafood, from scallops, to more

exotic oyster and lobster dishes. Check out their blackboard for the latest specials. As well as offering lots of fantastic choice, the food at Mr Miyagi is also very healthy and kind to your waistline. Manager Yee Bin Tham said: “We do mostly Japanese sushi rolls. Some people assume we just do raw fish sushi, but it’s much more than that. Half of them are cooked rolls. We also do rice and noodles using healthy cooking methods with little oil.” If you do happen to be a raw fish fan, the sushi boat for two is ideal. Filled to the brim with a variety of rolls, it’s only £19.90. At Mr Miyagi, you can sit in and enjoy the colourful café interior or collect take-away meals to enjoy in the comfort of your own home. They also have a delivery service coming soon. The restaurant is open Monday to Saturday from 11.30am until 10pm and Sundays from 12pm until 9pm. Mr Miyagi is now taking bookings for Christmas. Contact them today for a different kind of festive celebration. Mr Miyagi Revolving Sushi Bar 74 Division Street, Sheffield, S1 4GF Tel: 0114 275 3832

Meat, fire... and more You’l find much more than straight-up American barbecue at The BBQ Collective at The Hop. SALT and pepper, fire and meat, barbecue and beer… some things are natural pairings. And this couldn’t be truer for one of Sheffield’s newest partnerships: Ossett Brewery and The BBQ Collective, which together form The BBQ Collective at The Hop. Both are independent, family-owned businesses who are passionate about each other’s products and, together, they offer a unique dining experience in Sheffield. After closing for four weeks for a full refurbishment, the venue is now much more open, brighter and livelier, with a more youthful, fun feel. Within this setting they have created an unrivalled experience, serving authentic American barbecue, great beer and live music. The venue, which spills across two floors, accommodates 120 diners, and its spacious mezzanine, dotted with artistic references to classic American country music idols, makes it ideal for large groups looking for a fun environment. The BBQ Collective is the result of a life-long passion of executive chef and pit master, Jeffrey Wright, from Minneapolis, Minnesota. “Like many Americans, I have been eating and cooking barbecue my whole life. And in every city or town I travelled to in the States, I would always seek out a local, side-of-the-road barbecue shack. When we travelled the barbecue trail last year, we often found the best barbecue was in the smallest, off-the-track places. “Although barbecue may seem simple, it requires quite a bit of technique and finesse to get right. Regardless, it’s not about theatre; it is about the best quality meat, wood and equipment. You simply can’t make good barbecue

without any of these key elements.” And it is in this profound devotion to barbecue that The BBQ Collective was born, culminating with a pit master apprenticeship at Hill Country BBQ Market in New York City. Jeffrey’s dedication to the craft means he uses a best-in-class smoker from the States and, not just any wood, but the highest quality wood from the Peak District. All the meats are butchered to spec – as are the Texas hot-link sausages, which are made to order by Beeches of Walkley. The menu offers straight-up American barbecue, including generous portions of meaty and smoky beef and pork ribs, buttermilk-fried chicken, and other southern classics. For the barbecue aficionados, The BBQ Collective’s family-style party menu offers bespoke items such as 14-hour smoked beef brisket, whole pork shoulders, and legs of lamb. While all this is more than enough reason to visit The BBQ Collective at The Hop, let’s not forget it is also established as one of Sheffield’s leading live music pubs with a great selection of real ales and craft beer. The BBQ Collective at The Hop holds open mic nights fortnightly on Thursdays, offering local musicians an opportunity to try out their material in front of an audience and they also have live music on every weekend. Whether you’re looking for the ultimate barbecue experience, a venue to host a special event or celebration, or simply somewhere to catch up with friends over beer and live music, The BBQ Collective at The Hop will not disappoint. SUSHI may seem modern and on-trend, but it actually first appeared in Japan around the eighth century. The original type of sushi was developed as a means of preserving fish in fermented rice, but soon enough, people began to eat the surrounding rice as well as the fish. Fast-forward to 21st century Sheffield, and you’ll find a number of Japanese restaurants serving up their own tasty concoctions. The only problem is, until now, there haven’t been many outlets selling fast and cheap sushi, that still manages to maintain all its deliciousness. This is where Let’s Sushi on Division Street comes in. The newly opened fast-food café not only offers an array of freshly made sushi, noodles and rice dishes, but is committed to saving you money too. Sushi sets start at a reasonable £3.99 and hot dishes start at £3.65, but they also offer a ten per cent discount to students and a 15 per cent discount to local businesses. All their fish is delivered fresh from neighbouring fishmongers Simmonite and is prepared daily by their head chef, who has ten years of experience working in a Japanese restaurant in London. Along with a dedicated team, Let’s Sushi is well placed to serve some of the most authentic and high-quality Japanese dishes around. There’s plenty of room to sit in, but if you are in a hurry, their meals are ideal to take away, and they have recently launched a delivery service too. So, the next time you’re on your lunch break and you’re looking for something fast and cheap yet, healthy and delicious, Let’s Sushi on Division Street is the place to go.

From breakfast ‘til bedtime – and for all the family – toddle on down to...

BILL’S has landed in Sheffield! I’d spotted the sign going up at St Paul’s Place a few months back and having dined at their central London venue previously, I had high expectations for the latest northern addition to their restaurant portfolio. Bill’s is a unique café-bistro and produce store created by a team of people who are passionate about food. Step inside the doors and you’ll find fruit and exotic vegetables stacked up alongside an array of alluringly colourful homemade cakes, pizzas, quiches, pies and sandwiches. There is a wide choice of ever-changing desserts and salads as well as made-to-order juices, smoothies, milkshakes, coffees and teas that are all available to eat in or take away. We went for lunch and were seated in the more formal restaurant area; the venue was almost full – an impressive start given Bill’s only opened its doors early summer. The restaurant is impressive – exposed industrial lighting and metal furnishings contrast with chic chandeliers and retro armchairs. The venue is full of colour and charm. While dining at Bill’s may feel very grown-up it’s perfect for little ones too. Children are made to feel right at home and are given their own menus (and colouring pencils), which is great value for money too – threecourses for £6.50. This included a starter of hummus, carrot and Bill’s welcomes children cucumber sticks, mains of

macaroni (you could have also had fishfingers, ribs or a chicken burger for example), and if there’s room, desserts including fruit skewers, chocolate brownie or ice cream. More than enough to keep little ones entertained. Now that the little ones are occupied you can discover the best that Bill’s has to offer. We enjoyed steamed mussels in white wine, tomato, rosemary and garlic with fries (£12.95) and a ribeye steak with sweet potato fries (£16.95). The mussels tasted very sweet and fresh with an extremely moreish sauce, while the steak, while served simply, was cooked to perfection, accentuating the cut of beef. I’d heard lots of good things about desserts at Bill’s and the pecan pie with maple syrup ice cream (£5.50) didn’t disappoint. In fact, it was the highlight of our visit, having a delicious homemade taste. Across the table, the Eton mess (£5.95), given a twist with the addition of crème frâiche, was equally good. To match the food there’s also a wide choice of beers, wines, an after dinner heritage port or teas and coffees. The founder of Bills set out to create something amazing, “with great food, a real buzz, and plenty to look at – a place for everyone”. We think he’s done just that. 28 Florian Grou, head chef at Marco’s New York Italian, shares a winter warming recipe, perfect to try at home. IT’S mushroom season, the perfect time to indulge in a hearty bowl of something earthy and warming. I wanted to share the perfect dinner, something to look forward too after dark wet journeys home, long weekend walks in the Peak District (or the park), or after quick pint at your local. Risotto is not too difficult to make, and you can while away an hour or so foraging for them yourself at your local independent grocers, who will have a burgeoning selection to purchase at this time of year.

❬ WILD MUSHROOM RISOTTO ❭ INGREDIENTS 1 litre of chicken or vegetable stock 1 shallot, finely sliced 1 garlic clove, finely sliced 200g risotto rice 50ml white wine 200g of your choice of fresh wild mushrooms 50g dried porcini A few chopped sprigs of parsley and tarragon 50g Parmesan Olive oil Maldon sea salt Cracked black pepper 10g butter

METHOD 1. Soak the porcini mushrooms in stock for a couple of minutes. Remove and place to one side. 2. Drizzle olive oil in a hot pan and add your shallot and sliced garlic. Sweat these down until translucent, add your risotto rice, stir until shiny then cover with stock. 3. Let that cook on a low heat whilst you fry in a hot pan your prepped wild mushrooms (my choice would be chestnut, cêpe, shiitake and oyster) and your drained and chopped porcini. Add a little salt and pepper and when cooked throw in the parsley and tarragon (keeping some back for garnishing). 4. Keep adding the stock until you have used it all. Throw in the wild mushrooms, a generous knob of butter and Parmesan and stir through while it cooks for a couple more minutes. 5. Serve in two large bowls. Top it with the chopped herbs and Parmesan shavings on top, et voilà!

Their blend of unique recipes and highquality ingredients helps to ensure that they satisfy the needs of loyal customers every time. And yet it is not only through serving delicious dishes that Abdul’s help to serve the local community: they have also teamed up with the Cathedral Archer Project – a Sheffield based charity – to help provide food to those individuals currently forced to endure the tough conditions of homelessness. Times are a’changing Is beer the new wine? Napoleon’s Casino & Restaurant are setting out to educate the masses with a masterclass in matching food and ale.

BEER has long been the working man’s drink, a thirst-quenching antidote to a hard day’s down t’pit, polished off with a packet of pork scratchings and maybe a pickled egg. It’s this long-held tradition that has seen it perhaps sneered upon by the upper echelons of society who so often prefer the grape to the grain. But, as Bob Dylan so aptly said, the times they are a’changing. The craft beer revolution has been bubbling under the surface for some time and has slowly and surely broken to the surface. The clamour for Indian pale ales, porters and blondes has reached a new high. Of course we’re no strangers to microbreweries in these parts as the likes of CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) has been championing The Fat Cat, Kelham Island Tavern and so on for years. The small production alemakers and sellers soon found a new breed of beer connoisseur that ranged from the working class to the well-to-do. It was perhaps only a matter of time before the bigger breweries wanted a piece of the action which brings me nicely to the reason for my Thursday evening visit to Napoleons Eccesall Road, which recently celebrated its 40th birthday. In conjunction with brewing behemoths Molson Coors, they hosted a wellattended beer tasting evening with matching food – and very good it was too. Our four-course dinner had been expertly paired to an accompanying beer by host Martin Shillitoe from Molson Coors who also gave us an introduction to beers, lagers and the brewing process. Did you know, for example, lagers are classed as such as they are bottom fermented while an ale is top fermented? You do now.

NOVEMBER 2015 / ISSUE 24

We started with a pale, hoppy Sharps Cornish Pilsner (5.2%ABV), a German-style lager. Light and refreshing it was well-matched to our entrées of smoked mackerel paté and horseradish yoghurt. Next up was my favourite beer of the evening, Krušovice Imperial (5%), a Czech-style pilsner brewed in the Bohemian style with was darker than the Cornish version and had notes of toffee and caramel. Its mellow taste was very palatable and was a good accompaniment to the Indian-spiced sweet potato parcel and mint and cucumber salad. A Welsh blonde (not Katherine Jenkins) had been chosen to pair with a main course of chicken, potato and parsley galette, sage-infused carrot purée and red wine jus. Brain’s SA Gold (4.3%) was a mild, summery ale with a hint of tobacco on the nose, not too overpowering which worked well with the chicken. To finish there could only be one choice to accompany a cardamom-scented chocolate brownie and mint chocolate ice-cream – a porter, on this occasion a West Indies variety from Guinness (6%). The strongest beer of the evening was dark and smoky with coffee undertones – the perfect match. All in all it was a pleasant, informative evening with good food and good beer and at just £25 per person, which included a welcome drink and £5 gaming chip, it was incredible value for money. Napoleons’ first beer tasting evening was a success. * The next event is pencilled in for 19 November. Visit www.napoleons-casinos.co.uk for more information or to book a table.

31 Traditional Turkish expertise at Anatolia EVOLVING trends, that has seen discerning gents forego the hairdresser in preference to a traditional barbershop experience, has led to a remarkable renaissance in wet shaving. Firmly establishing itself in the city centre is Anatolia, a traditional Turkish barbers in every sense of the word. Owner Leo trained in Turkey for seven years before mastering his craft in Sheffield for the last four. With Anatolia, his vision was to create a fresh modern space with a very contemporary feel and a firm emphasis on customer service. So what does a Turkish wet shave involve? Well, first off, your face is wrapped in hot towels to open up your pores. Shaving cream is applied using a brush to get the bristles up before a traditional blade is used to shave both with the grain and against it After rinsing, cold towels are applied to close the pores. * To find out more, visit Anatolia’s Facebook page – Anatolia Barbers Sheffield S1.They also offer students and civil servants a ten per cent discount.

Standing the test of time Richard Ward, the famous Chelsea blow dry stylist, brings anti-ageing hair care to Sheffield... WE’RE all familiar with anti-ageing creams for our face and body, but now you can prevent your hair from ageing too thanks to the new Richard Ward argan collection. Consisting of a shampoo, conditioner, hairspray, mousse, styling spritz, elixir smoothing serum and hydrating treatment, The Chelsea Collection aims to rejuvenate and ageproof hair whilst boosting manageability. The Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, is a well-known fan of Richard Ward’s with regular trips to his London salon, and now Sheffield shoppers can get their hand on the latest range in John Lewis.

#triedandtested MY favourite product had to be the smoothing serum. Squirt just one pump in the palm of your hand then rub your hands together so the serum is evenly spread before smoothing gently over the ends of the hair and use sparingly over the length to smooth any stray hairs. My hair was left grease-free and shiny. The shampoo and conditioner also gave my hair added volume and thickness which was a bonus but regarding the anti-ageing benefit – only time will tell. Meet makeup artist Sarah Gray, founder of The Makeup Studio… What are the key beauty trends at the moment? Soft contouring and lots of highlight. Brows are also becoming less prominent – in comparison to the heavy defined brows we’ve seen for the past couple of seasons. What is the biggest makeup faux pas you see here? A lot of people get brows wrong. They’re often pencilled in too solid at the front. Getting it right is an art though – I advise using an eyeshadow rather than a pencil as it’s much easier to blend and gives a more natural finish. What is happening at The Makeup Studio, right now? We’re currently hosting group masterclasses where makeup enthusiasts can study one area in depth (£20pp for two hours). I also offer one-to-one make-up lessons (£40) where I apply makeup to one side of the face and the client applies the other. Visit my website and social media pages to keep up to date with the latest events and offers and take a look at my latest work. * Visit sarahgraymua.com for more information.

Welcome to tasty town! SHEFFIELD, over the last five years or so, has gone from zero to (almost) hero in the foodie stakes. With new restaurants, cafés and bars popping up all the time, it’s a nice problem to have when you can’t decide where to go for dinner. Thankfully, we seem to be slowly losing our crown as pulled pork capital of the north, which I, for one, am delighted about. At one point, you couldn’t move in Sheffield for some dubious examples of this delicious barbecue dish being offered to you. Don’t get me wrong, pulled pork is fantastic when done properly, using quality meat and delicious rubs, cooked low and slow before ‘pulling’. Unfortunately, the majority of the time, this isn’t the case. And that’s just not cool. So what next? With the addition of some lovely new places over the last few months, a new bunch of tenants on Sharrowvale Road, the huge foodie revolution going on at Kelham Island and some big development plans in the pipeline, Sheffield is looking tasty! Here’s a few things to try this month:

Weekend dinner date: Anchorage Bar for a tasty steak and a cocktail or two!

Words: Amanda Perry

Meeting a friend: Steam Yard Coffee

Midweek mate date: Urban ¼ at Kelham Island

If you’re already planning for Christmas, Simmonite Butchers on Division Street are on hand to help you get organised with this amazing deal. 2kg English boneless turkey breast 2kg English roasting beef 2kg English reared pork or gammon joint 2kg boneless chicken breast 2.2kg smoked or plain back bacon 12 pigs in blankets And a Christmas pudding

A tasty treat for lunch: The delicious Oisoi Food Market in St Paul’s Place for fresh salads and lots of theatre. Treating mum: Jamesons for their afternoon tea (booking advisable).

ONE-STOP MAN SHOP You Sheffield men-about-town have never had it so good... at the heart of all things stylish in the Steel City discover Savills. AS ‘one-stop man shops’ go, they don’t come much finer than Savills on Devonshire Street. Why one-stop? Well, there’s not many places you’ll find traditional barbering, a wet shave service and bespoke Savile Row tailoring under one roof – at least not this far outside the M25. There’s also a specialist retail area specialising in men’s traditional accessories (porkpie hat anyone?) and an apothecary of grooming aids, hand-picked for their results and unique appeal. Savills has quickly made a name for itself, not just in our fair city, but beyond, having been voted the UK’s Best Barbershop 2015 (as voted for by the industry’s elite). Much of the impressive shop – which made the hop over Division Street to its current premises earlier this year – is derived from reclaimed and antique furniture and objects. In fact, owner Joth Davies, has a particular addiction for antique barbering equipment. Within the shop you’ll find old and rare hot towel machines, hot lather machines and head massagers. Twelve barbers provide Sheffield’s image-conscious with a unique look, taking inspiration from the traditional barbering experience and adding a contemporary twist and modern service ethos. The number of barbers ensures that queues are kept to a minimum; clients can take advantage of the walk-in

service or, for those men where time is an issue, there is an affordable appointment option, which can be booked via Facebook or on a brand new app, which also enables you to check in remotely. Savills is renowned as the place to go for the traditional classic cut and looks that are modern re-works on retro and period styles. Barbers from around the world visit The Savills Academy every month in order to hone these skills. Alongside the hair service, hot towel wet shaves are becoming more and more popular, both as ‘treats’ bought as a gift voucher and increasingly as a regular slot in many a guy’s grooming routine. Forty-five minutes of pure pleasure combines hot and cold towels, essential oils, massage and handpicked grooming products. Bliss! Savills has also welcomed designer and tailor John Lancaster into its midst. As well as designing ready-to-wear garments to be purchased in the shop, John is available to offer a personal tailoring service to our clients. *We are pleased to announce Savills as partners to CityMag; watch this space every month now for impeccable style and grooming tips. Don’t forget to pop in and see them when you’re passing.

BECOME PART OF THE BIGGER PICTURE Shop ‘local & independent’ for the best of Sheffield. THE increasing abundance of small local retailers and businesses in Sheffield is becoming THE great attraction of a city built on steel and industry. Our plethora of quarters are literally buzzing with artisan producers, street traders, artists, makers, designers and shopkeepers running their unique quirky shops, cafes and bars. It’s undeniable that by choosing to buy local and independent you encourage the city’s unique and dynamic entrepreneurs to step up the pace. As a result our city is becoming a more vibrant and exciting place to live, work and play. Areas like the Devonshire and Sheffield Antiques Quarter are giving the city a cutting edge that improves the health of the local economy as well as the well-being of its communities. We’d all do well to buy into this and become part of the bigger picture where buying becomes personal and harps back to better days where community and local meant more. Buy local and buy with a sustainable guarantee ‘that every penny spent locally will in turn be spent locally’. In Sheffield people with the ingredients to run a truly Sheffield business will ensure the circle continues.

39 Geo’s hand-drawn mural for Dunkin’ Donuts in Leeds

His work is instantly recognisable and is catching the eye, not just in Sheffield but much further afield. ARTIST Geo Law has been around a while, working mostly from his Sheffield-based studio at S1 Artspace or on location in London. Geo’s style of work has a wide range, from hand-drawn to digital, but he’d be quick to admit that his doodled murals have been a hit with the likes of Facebook, Dunkin’ Donuts and Microsoft, asking him to create one off pieces in their office spaces. Most of Geo’s murals include colourful and fun characters inhabiting whimsical worlds with many objects and details dotted around the compositions, with a lot of the client’s own suggestions and anecdotes added in. Many point out that his style of work picks out references from Manga, Studio Ghibli animations and video game worlds, something he acknowledges heavily. Using only Posca paint markers, Geo will happily doodle directly onto the wall without marking pencil lines down for guides, saying it helps him to keep the flow fast and fluid. Not having to retrace over pencil lines cuts down the amount of time for the work and allows the job to pass by when he’s in

his drawing trance. Most recently, Geo doodled onto the walls of the new Dunkin’ Donuts store in Leeds at their grand opening as well as customising a fibreglass heart for the Meadowhall Shopping Centre’s 25th birthday under the Children’s Hospital Charity. As well as a steady stream of London based clients, Geo recently signed for New York-based illustration agency, Snyder New York, which has kept him pretty busy. Sheffield is still close to his heart and so he keeps tabs on interesting projects within the city. He’s recently teamed up with Leon Reed on his Meal Wheel app, where Geo has worked on a new logo, graphics and branding which is something he’s always wanted to do. More exciting things lay ahead as he always looks to update his designs within his online shop and keep people guessing on what he’ll be working on next. www.getaloadageo.co.uk www.twitter.com/getaloadageo instagram.com/geolaw

The changing of the seasons brings a whole new perspective for Yee Kwan. GOODBYE summer, hello autumn. It’s been a whirlwind year for Yee Kwan Ice Cream, who has enjoyed record-breaking sales, new partnerships and the continuous development of new flavours – yuzu ice cream anyone? In a new partnership with CityMag, Yee Kwan will be sharing her experiences and exciting news:

Sheffield’s restaurant scene is constantly evolving, with so many new restaurants to try out. I have three young children so it’s always nice to find a restaurant where we can relax and enjoy a meal without feeling rushed. I would recommend Mr Miyagi on Division Street, Urban ¼ on Sharrowvale Road, Proove in Broomhill and a special mention goes out to The Forum – their new Korean-inspired menu is divine. We’ve recently launched our newest flavour, chocolate miso ice cream. It offers a moreish salty aftertaste, which is pretty addictive. It is available to buy from Oisoi in Sheffield and the online retailer Ocado. Thank you to everyone who voted for us in the Eat Sheffield Awards, I’m pleased to say we were shortlisted for the Sheffield ‘Best Brand’. We’ve got our fingers, toes and eyes crossed! Catch you next month. Yee Kwan NOVEMBER 2015 / ISSUE 24

He was just 17... and already a BBC Proms Inspire Young Composers winner. Meet Finlay Stafford. SHEFFIELD’S musical legacy continues to swell with the news that one of its own – 17-year-old Finlay Stafford – was recently selected as a category winner in the BBC Proms Inspire Young Composers’ Competition. It was no mean feat for the King Ecgberts pupil, who stood out from hundreds of entrants with his jazz-inspired piece, Like The Wind. In a spinetingling moment, Finlay saw his five-minute composition performed performed by the Aurora Orchestra at the Royal College of Music.

To those who know Finlay, who lives in Meersbrook, it perhaps comes as no surprise. Music is in his blood; he grew up picking up whatever instrument came to hand – he counts himself ‘very lucky’ – and he’s equally adept with a guitar, a drum kit or the latest version of Garage Band. It was perhaps only natural that he would follow a musical career path (although he hopes to study maths at university). The fact that he only heard about the competition by chance (thanks to his friend Aimee), is even more poetic.

What was the criteria for the competition?

It was wide open. All you had to do was enter something around five minutes in length, but there were no restrictions on style or instruments. I sent in a demo recording and the sheet music, and each of around 200 entries goes through various stages of judging for them [the BBC] to decide on winners in each age group.

various instruments, notated down as I went along on the music software at school. How did you find out you’d won?

I got a call from the BBC as I was leaving school. It was such a big shock, but I wasn’t allowed to tell anyone for a week or so afterwards, which was really difficult… Tell us about your band, Tandem?

We’re an eclectic five-piece tinman psych outfit. We’ve been together for abour three years, writing and playing in the same lineup. We’re very different from the kind of stuff I’ve written in this contest, because we all have different influences and the writing is very collaborative and instinctive. Tell us about your EP.

The single Notions is already available on our Soundcloud. The whole EP should be out before the end of the year.

How did you set about composing the piece?

The piece I entered was one I also used for my A-Level music composition. It was written mostly by playing around on the

13 November / Plug

The last two years has seen Maverick Sabre hard at work, collaborating with artists such as Joey Bada$$, Gorgon City, Idris Elba and Stephen McGregor. The result is ‘Innerstanding’, a collection of tracks that show him developing his sound into something much more powerful.

EVERYTHING EVERYTHING 16 November / The Leadmill

Their latest tour follows a string of sold-out low-key comeback shows that the Guardian has described in a four-star review as highlighting their “frenetic pop genius”. This highly anticipated album from the Mercury Prize and Ivor Novello nominees was produced by Stuart Price (The Killers, New Order, Pet Shop Boys) and sees the band evolve still further into different spaces and shapes.

PRODIGY 28 November / Sheffield Arena

Having recently landed their sixth consecutive number one album with The Day Is My Enemy, and straight off the back of two sold out shows at Alexandra Palace to round off their UK tour, The Prodigy are pleased to announce a run of further live shows across the UK. The Prodigy are renowned for explosive live performances, and with special guests Public Enemy returning to Sheffield following their huge headline performance at last year’s Tramlines festival, this is an event not to be missed.

Card Gang Music have a full house of urban artists ready to whet the appetite.

AFTER the success of free online album, Stand Up, and follow-up EP, Card Gang One, and going on to open stages for the likes of Public Enemy, Pharoahe Monch and M.O.P, Clubs & Spades are proving that hip hop is alive and well in Sheffield. Made up of MCs Matic Mouth and Shinobi and Sticky Blood producers Andy Nicholson and Manakin (Jamie Shield), Clubs & Spades are in control of their own destinies when it comes to musical creativity. But this isn’t the only ace hidden up the four-piece’s sleeves. Along with their manager, the band has also created their very own independent label, Card Gang Music. Matic Mouth took some time out to talk to CityMag’s Phoebe Seymour about the emerging Sheffield urban music scene and what the future holds for both the band and the label.

What made you want to set up your own label? We did this for a number of reasons. One, to become more independent and two, because the number of artists within our little stable started to grow and the foundations were starting to lay themselves. Since Clubs & Spades formed two or three years ago, we have always known this was the start of a

movement. At the beginning, we weren’t fully aware that we would eventually form a label, but what we did know was that we were going to be very self-dependent in everything we did. I think that this independent approach, as well as a strong love for creating music in general, is what led to us forming the label.

How long has Card Gang Music (CGM) been going? About six months now. Our first release was an EP called I.D. from Sticky Blood (Andy Nicholson and Jamie Shield), who are the production team behind Clubs & Spades. This was just the natural progression of things. It was also a chance for Sticky Blood to spread their producing wings and gave the artists we had been

Matic Mouth

working with a chance to introduce themselves to the world. Who else is signed to the label? One of our protégés Manze Raider, Hekky, Ajay Carter, Pedram and a few others, but they are in the early stages of development.

Our aim is to keep releasing music that we love, keep sharpening the steel of our artists, keep getting the radio plays and basically, to build the brand.

Sticky Blood

Does CGM only work with hip hop artists? Not at all. Jamie and Andy have so much more to offer in terms of other genres of music. The I.D EP didn’t have any hip hop on it at all. Then there’s Manze Raider, an upcoming drum ‘n’ bass/grime/electronic dance music producer who, again, has his own unique sound. Hekky is a soulful vocalist who uses a very unique and exquisite wordplay over more hypnotic sounding music, which greatly contrasts to Clubs & Spades’ sound. Sheffield is famous for electro pop acts such as

Human League and indie bands such as Arctic Monkeys. Do you think there is a strong hip hop scene rising out of Sheffield too? These questions baffle me because it has always been there, but has struggled to raise its own awareness and get a solid foundation. Hoods Underground and Kid Acne may not be as active now, but were doing this years ago. That was another aim of Clubs & Spades and CGM – to raise that awareness, and to eventually showcase more of the ‘urban’ music in and around the city. Now, we do have a really active and vibrant scene, whether its grime or hip hop. I believe Sheffield still has a lot more to offer and I guarantee you will see and hear it over the next few months. Has Clubs & Spades got any gigs or album releases lined up? Clubs & Spades are currently waiting patiently on the sidelines, itching to go. Me and Shinobi have both been working on some solo material and side projects – all of which will be getting released in the build up to the next Clubs & Spades project, so look out for them.

reviews RAE MORRIS 9 September / The Leadmill

It takes a pretty big act to fill up the main room at The Leadmill these days, but after much exposure last year, including performances on BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge and working with one of the biggest dance acts of the moment, Clean Bandit, Rae Morris not only has the talent, but the impressive CV to accomplish this. Rae Morris silences the crowd with emotionallycharged songs such as album title track ‘Unguarded’ and Coppafeel breast cancer charity single ‘Don’t Go’ perched at a keyboard, before applying her husky vocals to more upbeat tracks such as ‘Closer’. But it is Clean Bandit collaboration ‘Up Again’ where she truly shines. Stood up and swishing her feline hair, she was far more animated, as was the crowd. There’s nothing more heart-warming than a ridiculously talented yet humble artist. And after admitting that as the tour has gone on, she has become more and more overwhelmed by the audiences reaction to her, the roars and applause rose to an impressive height leaving the star smiling from ear to ear. Rae Morris is an outstanding artist, backed by a flawless band and is best heard live. She is more than capable of shining on an even bigger stage, but it’s clear that everyone in the room felt lucky to witness tonight’s intimate performance.

Get around

IN case you haven’t noticed this summer, the resurgence of two-wheel transportation continues to thrive – and we’re not just talking about the bicycle. Forget the Tour de France, the tour de force in the world of motoring has come in the form of the scooter, which has seen a surge in popularity in recent years. And why not? They’re affordable, cheap to run and, in most cases, can be ridden without a full motorcycle licence (as long as you display ‘L’ plates). Scooters are brilliant around town too; nippy, agile and comfortable, you can leave the traffic behind. They look pretty good too. Via Moto, recently opened at Shalesmoor, stocks a full range of ready-to-ride scooters from the likes of Vespa, Aprilia and Gilera. They offer comprehensive servicing packages and stock everything you need to be road-ready, including helmets, gloves and clothing. Built on trust With a convenient city centre location and first-class service, it’s no surprise German car specialists Swift Performance acquired such a solid reputation. LET’S face it; the majority of us don’t have a clue about car mechanics. Sure, we can appreciate the purr of an engine, the pristine interior of a brand new car, or the unmistakable feeling that comes with driving a seriously well-built machine. But, for many, that’s where it ends. Thank goodness, then, there are experts such as Swifts Performance that we can trust to keep our precious vehicles ticking along. Originally established as two separate businesses – David Underwood and Swift Autocentre, which operated successfully within a few hundred yards of each other for many years – they merged in 2002 to become a first class centre of motoring maintenance in the heart of Sheffield. Thirteen years on and business is booming. Having continued to build on their reputation for providing a friendly, personal and – most importantly – trustworthy service, they have gained a bank of loyal customers who have been using Swifts for years. Their long-established customers have total confidence in them and know they will never try to convince them that work needs doing when it doesn’t. They pride themselves on the fact that their customers see the same staff every time they come, as the majority of the small team have been with the company for more than a decade.

As well as specialising in German marques, Swifts have established a name for themselves amongst the Lotus community

Together they offer the quality of a main dealer but for a much lower hourly rate. A good example is the lubrication (oil) service, for which they charge just £99 including VAT. Using genuine parts and the latest diagnostic equipment, they also carry out services, MOTs, general repairs and fault diagnosis. The installation of Road Angel dash cams, which can help to identify who is at fault in the event of an accident, is also now available. While every car is welcome, Swifts specialise in German brands such as Volkswagen, Audi, BMW and Mercedes. They have also established quite a name for themselves within the region’s Lotus community and you’ll often find them beneath the bonnet of one of these magnificent machines. Based in the centre of town, just minutes from Devonshire Green, Swifts is ideally positioned for what they term ‘shop and drop’. Few garages enjoy a location this good and customers often comment on what a bonus their convenient location is. To find out more, or to book your car in, call 0114 270 0124 or visit www.swiftsperformance.co.uk.
