Welcome to CityMag... WHAT better way to mark the start of spring than by raising a glass or two of Sheffield’s finest ale? The recent Sheffield Beer Week, organised by the fabulous Jules Gray, suitably inspired us to take a closer look at why we should be shouting out loud about how good Sheffield beer is. As well as putting local producers under the spotlight, we got Beer Central’s Sean Clarke to recommend a beer from each – I can feel a drinking game coming on… We also spoke to specialist beer photographer Mark Newton who has been snapping Sheffield’s pubs, people and places as part of a forthcoming book called Beer Yorkshire. He exhibited some of his work as part of Sheffield Beer Week making a very nice ale trail if you wanted to partake. Elsewhere we take a look at the biggest news at the moment – no, not the Tramlines line-up (although that’s in here too) – but the announcement of the new Heart of the City II project that is set to transform the city centre. We take a closer look on page 44. Cheers.

WELCOME to the Spring issue of CityMag – hopefully this brings with it an actual change in the weather… the Beast from the East was no fun at all. Having said that, the Siberian condition haven’t held this city back in coming forward… there is so much happening at the moment and the powerhouse that is Kelham Island continues to shine and develop. Enjoy this issue which is packed with all the latest news and a great insight into the great work Jules Gray, from Hop Hideout, has crafted in bringing together Sheffield Beer. Having been indulged on the Tramlines press launch, we’re more than excited about what’s to come for the tenth anniversary of the festival. Hillsborough Park looks like it’s going to be a cracking location and – like you – we’re mightily impressed with the line-up. On the fashion front we’ve been chatting to local designer and online store owner, Cat Hewitt. Fresh from London Fashion Week, she tells us what we should be wearing in the coming months. Hint: Anything lilac. Enjoy! Melanie Jackson Publishing Manager

MUSIC… SAM SMITH 20 March // FlyDSA Arena // www.flydsaarena.co.uk He’s a bit good that Sam Smith, so it’s perhaps no surprise that tickets for this arena gig have been selling like the proverbial hot cakes. With over 12 million global album sales and an array of impressive awards – ncluding an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, three Brit Awards and four Grammy’s – this is a show not to be missed.

PAUL CARRACK 17 March // Sheffield City Hall // www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk There are plenty of reasons to go and see Paul Carrack, not least because he’s the former frontman of Ace, Squeeze and Mike & The Mechanics, but because he’s from Sheffield too. There’s nothing like seeing ‘one of your own’ perform on the big stage – you’ll know more songs that you probably know.

EVANESCENCE 6 April // Sheffield City Hall // www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk Returning with a new album (their fourth) late last year, Evanescence have reworked and re-recorded some of their best-loved songs with a full orchestra, bringing you a stage show with a difference.

EXHIBITIONS…

CHANGING LIVES: 200 YEARS OF PEOPLE AND PROTEST IN SHEFFIELD 6 February - 1 July Weston Park Museum www.museum-sheffield.org.uk In 1918 the women’s suffrage movement successfully led to the passing of the Representation of the People Act, the first step in a major electoral reform that would extend voting rights to 8.5million women across the UK. Changing Lives celebrates how the people of Sheffield have stood up for what they believe in over the past 200 years.

HOPE IS STRONG 17 February - 10 June Millennium Gallery www.museumsheffield.org.uk

With far right parties and hate crimes on the rise, civil liberties and minority rights seem more at risk today than we ever could have imagined. In these turbulent times, Hope is Strong explores the power of art to question the world we live in.

ON SCREEN… TOMB RAIDER 16 March The film-based-on-acomputer-game series is given a reboot and goes back to the adventurer’s origins. Alicia Vikander dons the holsters (and hotpants) of Lara Croft, who finds herself trapped on the island where her father disappeared. Cue plenty of running, jumping, shooting and puzzle-solving.

PETER RABBIT 16 March The classic Beatrix Potter tale is brought to the big screen with a little help from James Corden, Daisy Ridley, Margot Robbie, Elizabeth Debicki and Sia. Mr McGregor (Domhnall Gleeson) once again proves to be Peter’s nemesis as he competes with the rabbit for the affections of new neighbour, Bea (Rose Byrne).

READY PLAYER ONE 30 March Steven Spielberg films have been something of a rarity in recent years but this sci-fi adventure sees a return to familiar territory – and hopefully a return to form. Centred around a virtual reality world called OASIS, participants are encouraged to find the recently-deceased owner’s ‘Easter Egg’, which will leave the winner heir to his $240billion fortune.

NEW MUTANTS 11 April This latest offering from Marvel dips into the horror genre – think X-Men meets American Horror Story. Based on the comic of the same name, the New Mutants sees five incarcerated youngsters, just discovering their abilities, fight to escape their past sins and save themselves. If you’re more of a Marvel traditionalist, Avengers: Infinity War is out on 27 April.

THE fourth Sheffield Beer Week, which ran from 12-18 March, proved once again why Sheffield is at the forefront of the craft ale revolution. Novice or enthusiast, young or old, male or female… all were welcome at the event, which was once again organised by the Hop Hideout’s Jules Gray. Front and centre at the festival this year was a focus on women working in the beer industry. With the 100-year anniversary of the People’s Act, where the first steps in the UK for women to gain the vote began, it seemed only fitting that we celebrated all those making huge contributions to the industry, be they bar servers, brewers or business owners. Ladies That Beer, a group dedicated to encouraging the enjoyment of beer by women, held a tasting and social at The Rutland Arms on 10 March whilst Brewster festival organisers Fem.Ale held a ‘Tap Takeover’ at the same venue. To develop a deeper understanding, Sheffield Beer Week also took a ‘Back to Basics’ approach looking at the different elements that make up your favourite tipples – malt, water, yeast, hops and adjuncts. Venues including the Sheffield Tap, Sentinel Brewhouse, The Devonshire Cat, Shakespeares and Hop Hideout all held information events – and no doubt had plenty of ales to try too. Taking a different approach to Sheffield Beer Week was photographer Mark Newton, whose beer photography trail celebrated the city’s diverse brewing landscape. His images capture the soul of beer, the people, the places, the moments, the ingredients, the tools of production and the smile over the bar when you order and a whole lot more. We had a more in-depth chat with Mark – and feature some of his stunning pictures – over the coming pages. In celebration of Sheffield ale too, we take a closer look at the breweries making waves in the city and beyond. Plus we get a favourite beer columnist, Sean Clarke of Beer Central, to recommend some of his favourite beers. We’ll raise a glass to that.

Tell us about your background?

My photographic journey started by shooting bands. I captured live and portrait imagery for a wide variety of people from Plan B magazine, Artrocker, as well as local publications like Sandman and Leeds Guide. I managed to shoot many of my favourite musicians including Iggy Pop, Sonic Youth, Cribs, Explosions in the Sky, along with plenty of smaller Yorkshire bands on their way up to success. I then got a job working for the NHS producing video, photography and design for internal and external campaigns. I really learnt a lot and grew as a photographer during this period and ultimately this encouraged me to go full-time freelance. How has your photography career developed (‘scuse the pun!)?

Once I knew I wanted to pursue a full-time freelance path it has really allowed me to consider what direction to take my photography. Along with shooting editorial and commercial work I also spilt my time by documenting weddings. Between the two I work in a very similar style and I find this allows me to take a fresh approach to each shoot. My style has really developed in a way that aims to tell the story of what I’m capturing, showcasing the people and the feel of each location. What have you got planned for Sheffield Beer Week?

(we’re still in the process of confirming locations so I’ll pop in italic that isn’t confirmed at the moment that I’ll need to firm up later, but fingers crossed everyone will be involved). In collaboration with Sheffield Beer Week we’re putting together a photography trail. The trail will showcase what makes the Yorkshire beer scene so diverse, by showcasing the images that portray the places and more importantly the people who create these businesses. This is going to feature a range of different venues that each will exhibit a mini exhibition showcasing imagery from Beer Yorkshire, with a Sheffield bias in the selection. Hop Hideout will feature imagery around the brewing process; at Shakespeares there will be classic Yorkshire pubs; Sheffield Tap, having a brewery in house, will hold more brewery led imagery; while at Rutland Arms there will be photos focusing on the women of the Yorkshire beer scene. The idea is that during the beer week people visit each of the locations to check out a different part of the project as well as enjoying some of the events held at the same time. You’re obviously really passionate about beer. What’s your favourite?

Now that’s a hard question, I’d say it really depends on the day. In Yorkshire now we’ve got some absolutely cracking breweries producing a vast range of beers. The Northern Monk Patron project has been really good to watch grow and change. Roosters in Knaresborough are celebrating their 25th anniversary this year and have already brought out some great tasting specials. The Magic Rock Northern Powerhouse was a great start to the year. I’ve had some great beers from smaller breweries such as Zapato, Wild Childe and Beak last year so really looking forward to see what they get up to, especially with Zapato and Wild Child opening new sites in 2018. Any favourite Sheffield locations/pubs/breweries?

while away a good few hours. A trip into town isn’t complete without swinging by Hop Hideout and Beer Central to pick up a few bottles or cans. What happened with the Beer Yorkshire book?

We ran a kickstarter campaign to get Beer Yorkshire into print. Unfortunately we didn’t hit the target, however the feedback we got was really positive and we have had a large number of people asking about getting a copy. At the moment the guys from Hop & Barley are just putting finishing touches to the new issue of the magazine (VOL9) so once that is out we’ll be putting together a new campaign to get the project produced as a book. Anyone wanting to find out more can head on over to the website at www.beeryorkshire.com or give me a follow on social media. Are there any particular pictures that stand out for you?

I’ve got a couple of images from each location that really stand out, but looking at the project as a whole it’s some of the places that it wouldn’t normally be possible to get access to that stand out. I’ve visited two maltsters, Thomas Fawcett’s in Castleford and Muntions over in Flamborough. The imagery I got there not only was something that most people don’t get to see but really helped to expand my knowledge of the processes used. On the day I visited Magic Rock they were filling barrels for the start of a new sour beer program which was a special occasion. A lot of the images which stand out are those that show off the people behind the brewing process, Dean at True North filling cask, Stu at North Ridings emptying the mashtun, along with the portraits that show the locations such as Adrian at Wishbone Brewery, What are your future plans?

The plan is once Beer Yorkshire is in print to continue to showcase the project by sharing some of the outtakes and alternate images that won’t make the cut. Having captured over 80 people and places there’s a lot of imagery, at the same time the scene is constantly evolving and growing so I don’t see an end to the project. My photography means I get to work with a wide range of independent businesses so it’s always great helping those to create some imagery that really showcases their passion and helps them reach a wider audience so I’m really looking to those new projects this year. I am also covering a wide range of food and drinks companies as well which is really good fun. Apart from beer, any other passions?

I’m a big fan of travel photography, luckily I get to visit a wide range of places through my photography. Whilst away I also try and make the time to capture some imagery, I think this is a good way to grow as a photographer and challenge myself to document different situations. I’m working on a project at the moment that will allow me to share more of this imagery, so excited to see what people think to that. Check out more of Mark’s pictures on the following pages. In the meantime, Mark can be found at www.marknewtonphotography.co.uk with all social media links on there.

It’s hard to pin down my favourites as there’s so many. For me Sheffield has such a good selection of pubs that have kept the true cosy feel, whilst serving a really great range of beers for all occasions. The Shakespeare, Rutland Arms and the Fat Cat are spots I can

Founded in 1996 when Patrick Morton and his father Hugh decided to pursue their mutual love of fine beer and put their faith and money into creating their very own brewery. They now make over 200 brewers’ barrels (that’s 800 of your typical casks you’d find in a pub) per week of up to nine different beers at any one time. Their flagship beer is Moonshine, a multi award-winning pale ale.

Established in 2005 and based on a busy working farm in the picturesque village of Bradfield in the Peak District, Bradfield Brewery have gone from milking 100 cows a day to brewing over 100,000 pints of beer a week. Whilst Farmers Blonde might be its staple, the punters go mad every year for its Christmas ale, Belgian Blue.

SEAN RECOMMENDS: Salvation – Rocky Road stout with marshmallows, cacao nibs, cranberries and all sorts. Delicious!

SEAN RECOMMENDS: Sixer – 6% pale ale that’s full of hoppy flavour. Tasty!

Ok, so the brewery might actually be in Stockport but Brew Foundation’s presence in Sheffield is pretty significant. Father Robert is based in Cheshire and looks after distribution west of the Pennines while son James is based here, brews the beer and looks after distribution east of the Pennines. Sounds like a good business plan to us. SEAN RECOMMENDS: Janet’s Treat Porter – cherries and chocolate, what’s not to like!? Comforting!

Emmanuales

Born from a love of beer both in the UK and California, after a lot of dreaming and even more waiting, Lost Industry started brewing in November 2015 with one simple plan; to brew beer that they wanted to drink, and with no inhibitions. They’re no strangers to not only brewing different styles, but also experimenting with different techniques and interesting ingredients.

81 Burton Road, Sheffield, S3 8BZ Tel: 0114 272 7256 www.emmanuales.co.uk What would Jesus brew? It’s a question we’ve been asking ourselves, here in the office. For the answer head to Emmanuales, who have been brewing beer of biblical proportions since 2014. Their merchandise is pretty smart too. SEAN RECOMMENDS: Ryejoice – a 5.4% red rye ale from Sheffield’s holiest brewers. Joyous!

Exit 33 Unit 7, 106 Fitzwalter Road, Sheffield, S2 2SP Tel: 0114 270 9991 www.exit33.beer Exit 33’s journey began back in 2008 in an old cutlery works (very Sheffield). After a few low-key years learning their trade, they moved to bigger premises, rebranded and expanded yet remain a small, independent, but not too traditional brewery. Beer is hand-made locally in small batches using quality natural ingredients, and is served unfiltered and unpasteurised. They also operate their own pub, The Harlequin. SEAN RECOMMENDS: Mosaic – 4.1% pale ale that really does show of the fantastic US Hop, Mosaic. Tropical!

It’s now the oldest in the city and has grown significantly over the years, largely thanks to Dave Wickett, a university lecturer, turned pub owner and brewery owner. Their multi-award-winning Pale Rider is now stuff of Sheffield legend. SEAN RECOMMENDS: Imperial Stout – a strong dark stout that really is a true winter warmer. Bold!

Gorgeous news

Bowled over by The Moor Developers working on stage three of the Moor’s regeneration have bowled a strike with the latest news that Lane7, a popular bowling alley, is set to open. Not only will bowling become available in the city centre, Lane7 will also host a variety of other facilities to assist excitement including retro gaming arcades, karaoke, ping pong and pool. A number of other shops have been confirmed to soon be coming to The Moor including H&M, Next and GAP. The arrival of new business is all part of the stage three plan for development of the area.

29 New season at the Crucible The new season is shaping up pretty nicely at the Crucible as Sheffield Theatres’ Artistic Director Robert Hastie launches 2018/19 with a fresh production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Brimming with musicality, Dan Gillespie Sells will be returning, following his work on Everybody’s Talking About Jamie. to compose a brand new and exciting score. It runs from Friday 28 September 2018 to Saturday 20 October 2018. This year’s Crucible Christmas musical will be Kiss Me, Kate; from the Golden Age of musicals, this riotous, romantic musical comedy will be directed by Paul Foster (Annie Get Your Gun). This will run from Friday 7 December 2018 – Saturday 12 January 2019. Finally – and definitely put a note in your diary for this one – Robert Hastie will close the season by directing the world première of Standing at the Sky’s Edge. A brand new musical written by Michael Wynne, featuring music and lyrics by Sheffield’s very own Richard Hawley. In 1961, the first residents of Park Hill were given the keys to their new homes, and Standing at the Sky’s Edge tells their story over the next 50 years, in a heartswelling, heart-breaking love song to Sheffield. This will run in the Crucible from Friday 15 March – Saturday 6 April 2019.

McKee – working class hero Pete McKee’s latest exhibition, This Class Works, offers a personal perspective on the work and life of the working class. Pete draws on his own background which forms the subject of this new collection, offering an insight into the artist’s history and experience of the world he grew up in. This Class Works will be exhibited inside a former spring factory, located at 92 Burton Road in Sheffield. This large warehouse space is located just outside the city centre and is surrounded by smaller factories which still thrive today. The exhibition will run from 14-29 July only and visitors will need to book an allotted time slot to visit the exhibition. Visit www.petemckee.com to find out more.

Sheffield Makers Fair Those of a crafty persuasion will be pleased to know that Mary’s Marvellous Markets will return to host the popular Sheffield Makers Fair at St. Mary’s Church, on Bramall Lane, this April. And this year they have announced an exciting partnership with Sheffield Sellers on Etsy, the team behind Etsy Made Local, who will curate the event on 21 April. Taking great pride in their customer service, newly-extended Autohaus Dolby is perfectly placed to service your Volkswagen group vehicle. YOU may choose a car based on your lifestyle, or perhaps you trust a particular make or model. But it is just as important to find a garage that fully understands and uses the correct equipment for your vehicle. If you drive a Volkswagen, Audi, Seat or Skoda, help is at hand. Autohaus Dolby only work on Volkswagen group cars and vans and provide the sort of brand-specific knowledge you’d expect from a franchised dealer, only at independent prices. Established ten years ago by Matt Dolby, this independent business offers a comprehensive service for Volkswagen owners, tailored to their specific vehicle. The staff at Autohaus Dolby have specialist knowledge of the brand and pride themselves on their friendly and approachable service. “Out of everything we do, our major service with comprehensive service checklist is the most popular and helpful thing we offer our customers and it’s testament to what Autohaus Dolby is all about,” says Matt. “Customer service and creating more positive and personal relationships with our customers is just as important to us. They’re not isolated from the person who works on their vehicle so they can really get a good understanding of what goes into keeping it in great shape.” The garage, based within easy reach of Sheffield, Rotherham

HIPSTER

No needle with Second Thread CityMag caught up with local designer and online store owner, Cat Hewitt, for a chinwag about her brand in the aftermath of London Fashion Week. By Ashley Birch. WHILST it may be the big designers that grab all the headlines at London Fashion Week – who can forget Christopher Bailey’s swansong for Burberry? – sometimes it’s the lesser-known creators that benefit the most. Whether you’re inspired by tuxedo-style cocktail dresses, palazzo pants or rainbow checks, budding Cat Hewitt designers can draw huge inspiration from these international fashion showcases. Sew, without further ado allow me introduce Second Thread, the Sheffield based online clothes shop, offering quality fashions to Sheffield’s fashionistas. The brainchild of local designer and businesswoman Cat Hewitt, Second Thread has been going since 2014. Originally Cat was making all her own clothes and selling online. She eventually had her own rail inside the now defunct Kelham Arcade clothes shop, Room Four, until the partnership, like the clothes shop, fell through. In 2016 she began stocking brands as well as her own stuff, and the success of this venture and the fact she also works full-time has meant that this has taken precedent, with the design work taking a backseat for now.

SPRING 2018 / ISSUE 45

35

But, first things first, the thing we all wanna know is what’s in for this season, right? Cat said: “The main trend is the colour lilac – lilac is the one this season! “I’ve got some coming in. The beauty of working the way I do is that I can order in last minute to make sure I’m always up to date.” Cat tell us there is an emphasis on quality with the brands she stocks, she finds that brands such as Lavish Alice (Manchester), House of Sunny (London), Stay Sunny Chicago (London) and The Fifth Label (coming soon from Australia) last much longer and won’t fall apart after one wear like a high street dress might. She added: “When I first started I was making some stuff, but because of work at the moment I just stock brands. Kind of like mid-range stuff. Depends on the brand but nothing too expensive. The stuff that I try and stock is more about its quality. “I’ve tried stocking certain other labels before but it’s just not worked out and the quality isn’t there.” And Cat should know quality after over a decade in the fashion industry. She said: “I went to uni and studied fashion and had a bag making business in the Forum when I was just 15. I’ve always sewn. “When I was at college I didn’t think I wanted to be a fashion designer. I used to buy old tat from charity shops and make something new but at the time I thought I wanted to be a graphic designer. “I realised at Chesterfield College it could be more than just a

“I want women to be confident in their own style, wear what they wanna wear and be confident.” hobby, and the graphic design stuff has come in handy anyway, because I’m still using Illustrator every day at work.” Cat was, until recently, working five days a week for Drop Dead Clothing, but has recently gone to four days but the same amount of hours to try and cram in some time to concentrate on getting her message across through clothes. She said: “My main message is about being different and not wearing certain things because you’re told to. I want women to be confident in their own style, wear what they wanna wear and be confident.” If this is the sort of ethos that speaks to you then go give Second Thread a browse and fill your wardrobe with something a little different (and quite probably lilac!) this season. www.secondthread.com

40 De La Soul

Craig David

Tramlines is celebrating its tenth anniversary with a stellar line-up and a new home at Hillsborough Park. ‘WOW’ seemed to be the collective response after the unveiling of Tramlines’ ten-year anniversary line-up. Any scepticism over the change of location (we’ve seen it – it’s going to be great) was thrown out of the window once it was announced that Stereophonics, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds and Craig David’s TS5 would be taking the headline slots. Wow indeed. And punters are clearly putting their money where their mouths are as tickets have been selling like the proverbial hot cakes. On the evening of the announcement, the £49 Tier 3 tickets sold out in minutes with the £59 Tier 4 ones not far behind. Hats off to all those who bought the £25 early bird tickets when they went on sale. The weekend of 20-22 July will also see the likes of Blossoms, De La Soul, Jake Bugg, Stefflon Don, The Sherlocks and The Magic Gang strutting their stuff on one of four stages. Reverend and the Makers will also be putting in an appearance and front man Jon McClure will also be helping to curate the Leadmill stage. If that didn’t whet your whistle enough, the ‘second wave’ announcements added Clean Bandit, Mystery Jets, Rat Boy, Milburn, Everything Everything and Shed Seven, plus many more. Just 13 minutes by tram from the city centre, Tramlines’ new home at Hillsborough Park can accommodate upto 40,000 people (we think they’re going to need the space) and will feature a wider range of entertainment including pop-up cinema, comedy line-up, special treats from Sheffield’s local breweries, a kids and family area and much more. And the best bit? That’s just the first two announcements. There’s still much more to come. Visit www.tramlines.org.uk to keep up to date with all announcements. If you haven’t got a ticket already, we suggest you get one now.

Scrap star Adam ‘Jubby’ Taylor drew inspiration from the taps of Sheffield. Tell us about your cover.

I was kindly asked to do the cover for CityMag with the brief attached being to reflect the Sheffield Beer Festival. In all honesty I was thinking how much I would love to contribute something self directed but as I got into the idea of the brief I started to enjoy it. I sourced a few local images on the internet such as an old aerial shot of Neepsend and a fantastic photo of two old blokes raising their glasses to the camera, which I loved, especially in contrast to the modern young chaps drinking Fosters in the bottom corner of the image. I used collage, beer mats, magazine rips, and a torn down advertisement billboard sign from Penistone Road to create the image. What’s your background?

I was in a moderately successful Sheffield band a few years back and after giving the ball a mighty kick we decided to split. A few fallow years later I went to college to do an art access course and then on to study fine art at Sheffield Hallam University. Do you have a day job or are you a full-time artist?

I’m a full time human being haha. How would you describe your style?

I feel my work is a pictorial expression of the information overload and visual cacophony we are faced with every day. What are you working on at the moment?

I’m working on a very large and ambitious piece that is hopefully going to be shown as part of a group show in the Millennium Gallery.

43

What/who is your inspiration?

What does the future hold?

I get inspiration from cereal boxes, newspapers, my kids, adverts, the streets, music, art, poetry, the dump, sport, conversations, boozers, dreams, telly...

A full glass of beer. What makes you proud to be a Sheffielder?

Michael Palin and Pulp.

Which other artists do your admire?

Artistically I admire Picasso more than any other artist. He was like a footballer who could play ten out of ten in any position, a true genius. I also love Rauschenberg, Grosz, Basquiat, and Penck. I draw just as much inspiration from writers and musicians. The Velvet Underground, The Beatles, The Clash, Miles Davis, Lee Hazlewood and Tom Waits all inspire me as much as any artist. What would be your dream project?

A huge contemporary stained glass window for Westminster Abbey with total artistic freedom.

Words: Richard Abbey

Sheffield city centre is set to be transformed – but with much more than just a new retail quarter. CityMag gets to the heart of the proposals.

45

46

THEY say that you can gauge a city’s progress by the amount of cranes you can see on the horizon. If there’s any truth in that statement, then Sheffield is clearly on the up. From the New Era Development on St Mary’s Gate to Kelham Island, you could be forgiven for thinking that the city is one big construction site. And you’d not be far wrong. But let’s be honest, the bit that we’re all really interested in is the proposed new retail quarter. It’s been talked about for years yet very little progress seems to have been made – until now that is. Whilst much of the ongoing building work has been concentrated around The Moor – we’ve seen the new markets, The Light and news of H&M, Next, Gap and a bowling alley all joining the throng as part of ‘Phase Three’ – attention will now turn to the long overdue regeneration scheme and a new ‘Sheffield Retail Quarter’, which has now been renamed ‘Heart of the City II’ (we’ll call it HOTC2, for short). You’ll have seen Phase One slowly rising from the ashes of the old Grosvenor Hotel and this is well on track to achieve its 2019 completion date. Largely new offices for HSBC, the site on the corner of Furnival Gate and Cambridge Street will also house approximately eight new retail units as well as restaurants and cafes. This all brings us nicely to the announcement of Phase Two of HOTC2, which, by the time you probably read this,

will have been presented to Cabinet by Sheffield City Council and strategic development partner Queensberry for approval. If everything goes to plan, planning applications should be submitted by early summer with work expecting to start before Phase One is complete. So, why is this so exciting? Well, it means we’ll finally get a new, up-to-date, attractive retail hub – and much more besides. The council’s bold plans, which is estimated to cost around £470million, will see the addition of premium retail and leisure brands, contemporary office and leisure space, attractive public spaces, hotels and a plethora of food outlets, including a dedicated ‘food hall’. Councillor Mazher Iqbal, Cabinet Member for Business and Investment at Sheffield City Council, said: “I am delighted to see these new plans come forward which will make such a lasting impact on Sheffield’s retail, leisure and entertainment offer. We believe that these re-shaped and exciting plans position Sheffield brilliantly to deliver an individual and unique scheme that reflects the different ways in which people shop, live and socialise.” The scheme will see existing

street layouts retained although some, such as Cambridge Street, Charles Street and Wellington Street will become partly, and in some cases completely, pedestrianised. The John Lewis store will remain in its existing location, which it has occupied since 1963, as a key focal point of the city on Barker’s Pool. There will be a focus on high-end, premium retailers currently missing centrally as well as Grade A office and residential space – seen as key to providing the required footfall and spending power necessary to create and sustain a vibrant, dynamic city centre – and two new four and fivestar hotels. In response to public feedback, many of the city’s heritage buildings will also be retained including Pinstone Street’s frontage overlooking the Peace Gardens and historic Leah’s Yard, which will be carefully restored and integrated into the new scheme. The plan is to link the new scheme to the already popular areas of The Moor, Fargate and the Devonshire Quarter. Paul Sargent, chief executive and co-founder of Queensberry, said: “We have been working closely with Sheffield City Council for

nearly two years now to develop a masterplan that will create a renewed focus for the centre, that combines the best of the old with new buildings and enhanced public realm. “This is a key milestone and a significant step forward in this process, which will provide a transformational mixed-use development and place the city at the forefront of urban place making.” Approximately a third of the HOTC2 scheme will be comprised of retail, leisure, restaurants and cafes; a third offices and approximately a third residential and hotels, echoing the sentiment that this is much more than a new shopping district. “These new plans will see a truly innovative city centre emerging that reflects Sheffield’s changing dynamic,” added Cllr Iqbal. “The scheme has evolved to deliver not just a retail quarter but a new mixed-use, vibrant quarter right in the heart of the city.” Initial reaction to the new scheme seems positive (we’re certainly impressed). David Cross of Coda Architects was equally enthused: “The progress by the council and Queensberry has been excellent given the political uncertainty of Brexit. Phase Two looks great, a nice blend of uses and

with the spectre and uncertainty of Brexit looming over us, as well as the current spate of businesses, especially in the restaurant sector, restructuring or ceasing to exist, but I’m hopeful that the next ten years in Sheffield can be really positive and the people of the city get a centre that they can be proud of and one that reflects the history and heritage of it’s inhabitants.” With an expected completion date of 2024, this could be a very exciting five or six years. it seems like high quality apartments will be part of the scheme to enhance the 24hour city vibe. Retail has changed a lot recently and will continue to do so and therefore Sheffield’s new heart can reflect the future of cities – vibrant, blended and complete with lots of open space.” While the emphasis may be on high-end retailers, there will be plenty for independents too, at least that’s what’s been outlined in the initial plan. James O’Hara, the man behind the likes of the Great Gatsby and Public bars, feels it’s important for these independents to have a platform. “Whilst I understand the need to bring in ‘flagship’ brands, Sheffield is a city built on independence and entrepreneurship and it’s vitally important that this is in the DNA of the project,” he said. “It’s hard to be overly optimistic about anything

Key Questions about HOTC2 What is Heart of the City II? It’s a mixed-use, vibrant quarter right at the heart of the city and synonymous with everything the city is trying to achieve. It builds on the hugely successful Heart of the City project that kick-started the regeneration of Sheffield city centre at the start of the Millennium. Why has the name changed from ‘Sheffield Retail Quarter’? The change in working title reflects the evolution of the project over the last three years. We recognise that so much more is required to create a truly sustainable new quarter in the heart of Sheffield. What’s changed from the original plan? The updated masterplan includes a greater amount of office and residential space, which is seen as a real key to success for the scheme. We need more quality office space to attract well paid jobs and we want more people to live in the city centre to increase vibrancy and a sense of community. Is retail still at the heart? Absolutely. Statements that bricks and mortar retailing is dead are premature. What is changing is the recognition that retail needs to be part of a wider mix of activities so that city centres provide a much richer diversity of experiences to attract visitors. Will independent businesses be included? Heart of the City II is expected to further strengthen the city’s independent offer. It will have provision for independent operators to be part of the new improved food and drink offer, which is set to include contemporary food halls and quirky new outlets. The scheme is also being designed to seamlessly integrate with existing shopping destinations, drawing increased footfall into areas including the Devonshire Quarter.
