Welcome to CityMag... SEEING one of Pete McKee’s images on our cover always puts a smile on our face. It’s been two years since he last appeared in CityMag and to say he’s had a difficult 24 months is something of an understatement. The great news is he’s back with a brand new exhibition, This Class Works, which explores and celebrates British working class in Pete’s own inimitable style. He’s had some help along the way, from the likes of our very own Martyn Ware, Jon McClure and Jo Peel, and you can find out what he’s got in store, and why the working classes are so important to him, on page 38. While we’re excited to see what Pete’s been up to, we’re also counting down the days to Tramlines, which is right around the corner. We take an in-depth look at what you can expect at this year’s inaugural festival in Hillsborough Park – with the likes of De La Soul, Clean Bandit, Craig David and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, it looks like it’s going to be a banger. Doc/Fest will also be coming to your screens right about now and this year’s event sees the popular documentary film

festival celebrate its 25th anniversary. Guest speakers this year include Sir Trevor McDonald, Vicky McClure and Guy Martin. Elsewhere we look at some new foodie openings – Piña; a one-stop shop for men’s style – Arnold & Co; and have ten pairs of tickets to give away to see Paloma Faith at Market Rasen Racecourse in August. We also look at what’s coming up on the film, theatre and comedy front. Please have some sympathy for my right-hand woman, Melanie, who is busy sunning herself in the Balearics as this issue goes to print. Enjoy the summer and long may this fantastic weather continue.

MUSIC… KATY PERRY 19 June Fly DSA Arena www.flydsaarena.co.uk It’s a world tour that started almost a year ago by the time this lands in Sheffield so the California Gurl’s latest album, Witness, might need a revisit to make sure you know all the words. The platinum-selling album features the singles Chained to the Rhythm featuring Skip Marley, Bon Appétit featuring Migos and Swish Swish featuring Nicki Minaj.

DON VALLEY BOWL 17-18 August www.leadmill.co.uk No that’s not the name of a new Sheffield band but the venue for three quality summer outdoor gigs. First up on the Friday night is Hacienda Classical, a night of club classics curated by DJs Graeme Park and Mick Pickering and performed by a classical orchestra. Saturday will see George Ezra (above) taking to the stage, no doubt performing tracks from his latest album, Staying At Tamara’s, as well as his debut, Wanted On Voyage. The weekend closes with a bit of a Britpop revival featuring the likes of Ocean Colour Scene, The Coral, The Bluetones and Dodgy.

COMEDY… MICHAEL McINTYRE 23 June Fly DSA Arena www.flydsaarena.co.uk He’s become a TV star in his own right – think Michael McIntyre’s Big Show on BBC1 – but let’s not forget he’s a comedian by trade, and a funny one at that. This stop in Sheffield is part of a world tour that also takes him across the UK and Ireland as well as revisiting Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa and Norway and then heading to America, Canada, Switzerland, Iceland, Sweden, Malta and the Netherlands for the first time. Nice work if you can get it.

ON SCREEN... THE INCREDIBLES 2 13 July It’s taken 14 years to get a sequel to Disney Pixar’s hugely popular Incredibles film so expectations are high. This one picks up where the last one left off (if you can remember that far back) with the introduction of the villain The Superminer. It’s not all plain sailing for the Parr family though who have to come to terms with Jack-Jack’s emerging super powers amongst other things.

When a mission goes wrong, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his team find themselves in a race against time, hunted by assassins and former allies while trying to prevent a global catastrophe. Rebecca Ferguson, Ving Rhames and Alec Baldwin all reprise their previous roles whilst Michelle Monaghan returns as Hunt’s wife, Julia.

George Clooney’s Danny Ocean becomes Sandra Bullock’s Debbie Ocean in this all-female reimagining of the popular Steven Soderbergh trilogy. Aided by the likes of Cate Blanchett, Rihanna and Mindy Kaling, the girls attempt an impossible heist at New York City’s yearly Met Gala. The jury’s out on this one.

ANT-MAN AND THE WASP 3 August No doubt you’re still digesting the events of Avengers: Infinity War but if you’re still craving more Marvel – and some humour to boot – this sequel to 2015’s Ant-Man should tick your box. Whilst Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) is now balancing being both a superhero and a father, Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lily) and Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) present an urgent new mission that finds the Ant-Man fighting alongside The Wasp to uncover secrets from their past.

Men! Check out the one-stop shop for all your style and grooming needs. By Ashley Birch. IF you want your denim forged in Sheffield, an awardwinning haircut and a good chat over a beer while you browse quality men’s clothing (a specific set of requirements, admittedly!), then Arnold and Co. on Ecclesall Road is the only name in town. The newest menswear destination has been open for around three weeks now, and is the brainchild of Richard Mappin and brothers Alex and Adam Mir. Richard Mappin and the former Sa-kis manager, Alex Mir, are also co-founders of Forge Denim and began selling the Sheffield made jeans in November last year. Together they came up with the concept for Arnold and Co., and with the help of Alex’s brother, the awardwinning barber Adam, set up the one-stop shop for men on Ecclesall Road. Alex said: “Me and Richard set up Forge Denim and we came up with the concept of this men’s destination, so we’ve teamed up with my brother to have to have high-end men’s grooming and barbering downstairs and the home of Forge Denim upstairs, but alongside that, brands that fit

with our ethos. “I describe it as a one-stop shop, which sounds naff, but that’s kind of what it is. You come, you can have your haircut, all your grooming needs, and then come up here if you need jeans, a t-shirt and we’ll kit you out.” Upstairs, the clothes store is Alex’s domain, and you don’t have to spend long in his company to know he has a

passion for clothes, and denim in particular. Arnold and Co’s flagship brand Forge Denim has been meticulously ‘forged’ over the last two years, taking in a lot of that passion. “We set up Forge Denim because we love jeans and we saw a gap in the market for good quality men’s jeans, but we also wanted them to be made in England.” Alex said. “We want to support local manufacturing in this country because if we don’t get behind it we’ll lose that. “We have got stockists, and we do sell online, but the idea of Arnold and Co. was to be the home of Forge Denim.” As well as Forge, Arnold and Co. also stocks a number of

SUMMER 2018 / ISSUE 46

high end brands to complement the jeans, including John Smedley, Nigel Caborn, Joseph Cheaney, Sanders, Stevenson Overall Co., American Trench socks, Monokel sunglasses and Bather shorts. As well as the high-end garms they also stock items with a lower price point from Level Collective, a local brand that offer £30 t-shirts and £60 sweaters. Alex added: “We source and select brands, one, for their quality, and two, for where they’re made. We’re all about getting people to change their buying habits and buy something that lasts, it’s not about buying something that’s in fashion today that’s £20! It’s

15

L-R: Alex, Richard and Adam

about buying something that’s better quality and it’s gonna last you. “We want a mix of affordable brands but they have to fit in with our ethos and unfortunately a lot of the cheaper brands are probably made in sweat shops, and that’s not what we’re about.” The lads are however, offering a discount to anyone who gets their ears lowered downstairs, allowing them to

claim ten per cent off upstairs. A haircut downstairs will set you back £20, which is not bad at all when you see Alex’s brother, Adam’s, credentials. In 2013 Adam won British Barber of the Year and last year he won the American Crew All-Star challenge for the UK and the world. He’s been barbering for 14 years and worked at Taylor Taylor in Sheffield for six years, before setting up in

Arnold and Co. with his brother and Richard. He said: “It’s been fantastic. It’s different to places I’ve worked before. I’ve always worked in a walk-in barber shop where there’s queues of people and it’s not as relaxing from a client’s point of view. Whereas this is a really relaxed environment. It doesn’t feel like it’s work. We’ve had a

really good response so far.” Alex said: “People have said Ecclesall Road has needed this. Another good independent selling things that you can’t get everywhere else. “I love Sheffield and everything to do with it so I’m happy to work with anybody and support anybody.” If you fancy a new barnet then they encourage appointments, which can be made through Booksy. The ‘Experience Package’ at G Casino is amazing value for money – and the perfect excuse to try out their new spring menu.

THE last time I saw a Tina Turner tribute act was on an all-inclusive holiday in the Balearics when said performer also doubled (or should that be tripled?) up as Freddie Mercury and Michael Jackson. You had to see it to believe it. Thankfully, there are no such gimmicks at G Casino whose tribute acts definitely have more of the X-factor rather than the why?-factor. Janet Jaye, who stepped into the Proud Mary singer’s shoes with ease, even had couples hitting an impromptu dancefloor as she belted out hit after hit. Perhaps not what you’d expect to see on your average night at the casino where the focus is usually on the gaming tables. Janet, or should that be Tina, was just one of many tribute acts that perform at the casino

on Duchess Road – Elvis and Neil Diamond are coming up in the coming weeks (see their Facebook page for more https://www.facebook.com/pg /grosvenorsheffield/events/). The best way to enjoy these fun nights is with an ‘experience package’ (£30 per person – FREE if it’s your birthday), which includes a drink on arrival, three-course a la carte meal, £5 slots voucher, £5 gaming chip as well as gaming tuition (if required). The casino, which is part of the wider Grosvenor Casinos group, has just launched a new menu with a firm emphasis on quality steak. There are four to choose from – fillet, rib-eye, rump and flat iron – as well as different seasoning – salt and pepper, smoked paprika, blackened Cajun and rosemary and garlic. Each hunk of meat is served with a mushroom and tomato skewer, watercress, baby gem lettuce and skin-on fries – my tip: go for the Cajun spiced fries for a bit of extra kick. We tried the 7oz fillet (£24.95) and 10oz rib-eye (£20.95) which were both excellent and cooked as requested (medium-rare and

medium respectively). Be warned, it’s quite a plateful so think carefully when choosing your accompanying dishes. I started with a lighter, jumbo shrimp cocktail (£6.25) which proved to be a shrewd move, leaving me enough room to indulge in the waffles with chocolate sauce (£4.95) for afters. My wife started with salt and pepper dusted calamari (£6.25), which were deliciously crisp and tender as they should be, finishing with a not-too-heavy peach and raspberry cheesecake (£4.95). We dabbled on the slot machines with our vouchers before hitting the roulette table

SUMMER 2018 / ISSUE 46

with mixed results. It was great fun though and a good taster if you wanted to get more serious. There are also blackjack and poker tables, all of which were busy on the evening of our visit. Fully sated we retired to the bar to watch Tina Turner strut her stuff. The experience packages are fantastic value for money. Great food, games and top notch entertainment to match. HONDA NOW OPEN

These are exciting times for Via Moto. Having brought a popular brand back to their city centre showroom, they’re also helping to mould the superbike stars of the future. SHEFFIELD motorcycle specialists Via Moto has outgrown its space in Chesterfield and brought its full range of Hondas back home to its Sheffield site. In doing so, they have created a one-stop-shop for motorcycle enthusiasts in

Sheffield and a destination for bike fans to fill their leather boots with high quality bikes and merchandise. Those of you hailing from the north west of the city will no doubt recognise Matthew Gilder’s surname. His grandfather’s Volkswagen

dealership used to be on Middlewood Road, in Hillsborough, and that’s where Matthew started out, selling cars as part of the family business. As Matthew admits, he is not built for the murky world of corporate big business, so he decided to set up a boat brokerage in 2002 up at Hartlepool marina. In his first year they sold 123 boats, compared with just 18 the year before they took over. Unfortunately, the conditions

SUMMER 2018 / ISSUE 46

up in Hartlepool aren’t very clement so he then moved onto E P Barrus, who were just getting their foot in with motorcycles at the time they sacked their general manager. Matt got the job and that’s how he got into motorcycles. “I always thought about it but never got round to it,” says Matthew about riding: “But I got into it and I loved it. I went all over the world with it.” Eventually, the recession hit, and all the jobs at Matthew’s level disappeared. He had a year out before becoming involved with Piaggio through a Harley Davidson dealer for whom he had started selling electric bikes (somewhat ahead of his time!). He asked Piaggio if he could start selling Vespa from a little

shop in Sheffield and Via Moto was born. The business went from strength to strength and they ended up with three stores selling everything from Honda and Suzuki, to Aprilia and Piaggio. Earlier this year they decided to consolidate to two sites and create a destination site in Sheffield, bringing Honda from Chesterfield to sit alongside the Piaggios on Shoreham Street. They also have a young superstar in their midst with Sheffield’s 18-year-old superbike superhero Joe Sheldon-Shaw under the wing of Via Moto’s sponsorship (see panel opposite).

As well as all these exciting developments have some exciting projects in the pipeline, and we’ll tell you all about those when the plans are firmly in place, as Matthew tell us the plans are ‘a bit of a secret at the moment.’ In the meantime, if you’re in the market for a new hog then get yourselves down to Via Moto on Shoreham Street and check out Sheffield’s one-stop bike shop. Via Moto 156-158 Shoreham Street Sheffield, S1 4SQ Tel: 0114 303 3000 www.via-moto.co.uk

IF you spend 15 minutes with Joe Sheldon-Shaw, you’ll instantly understand that at just 18, the young Sheffielder is destined for big things. Composed, confident and a genuine love for motorbike racing, he’s tipped for stardom but remains cordial and affable as he sits down with us at the home of his sponsors Via Moto on Shoreham Street. “I came to work here when I was riding a Yamaha 06 and I’d just started in the British Championships. Me and Matthew (owner of Via Moto) came up with an idea to start a racing team. We bought a bike, started racing on a Z86 Kawasaki in 2016 and here we are. It’s a big part of my life. Sports bike, tourer, cruiser I just love riding bikes. I’ll ride anything!” Joe is competing in this year’s Pirelli National British Superstock 600 Championship, and made a strong start to the season at Donnington Park. “I was dead nervous leading up to the race – I’d never started on the front row of a British Championship race before. It was a massive thing for me but I just tried to stay focused.” Despite some tricky weather conditions throughout the weekend, Joe managed to qualify in second position. “It’s the best qualifying result we’ve ever had and we were over the moon with that.”

SUMMER 2018 / ISSUE 46

Joe finished the race in third, pushing the leaders right up until the end of the race where some back markers held him up. “The front two got through them just a bit quicker than me. I’m not too disappointed though, it was my best ever finish. To come away with a front row start and a podium from the weekend is one of the best results I’ve had so far.” With Sheffield not exactly known for its road racing circuits, how did Joe get into this line of work at all? The answer lies at home. “Believe it or not, I’ve been in the paddock since I was born. My mum had bikes, my sister had bikes. I train with my dad every day, he was a former champion, so it’s always been something I wanted to do.” “I always knew it, but when it comes to the point where you realise you are where you want to be, it’s an amazing feeling.” At numerous points during the interview, Joe sits up and his eyes light up – almost as if hearing himself talk about racing makes him just as excited as it did the first time he rode a bike. Hopes for the season? “I came into the season with the mind-set that I was going to win the championship no matter what. The result at the weekend makes me think that even more now – we’re in with a top, top shout.”

FROM SHEFFIELD WITH LOVE Meet the Sheffield-based architecture and design studio making beautiful projects inspired by the local area.

AM side table

LOCALS know that what makes Sheffield special is that if you head in one direction you can find yourself in a thriving city centre metropolis, but if you choose to amble along in the other, you’ll hit unspoilt countryside, such as the limestone valleys of the Peaks. We are, after all, still one of the greenest cities in Europe. A fact that hasn’t escaped the notice of the guys at From Works, a Sheffield-based design studio that incorporates

the local area in all aspects of the design process. Whether it be a full kitchen refurbishment, inspired by a picture of a Peak District stone covered in moss, or a table made from local Sheffield steel with the result of which being a beautifully crafted individual design that pays homage to the local area whilst still creating something new. From Works was set up by Darren Hancock, 30, and Adam Eckworth, 30, in 2017 who are also both tutors of architecture

SUMMER 2018 / ISSUE 46

and interior design at the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam respectively. The pair met at Chesterfield College whilst studying foundation art and then went on to further their education in architecture at Northumbria University. After graduation they took slightly different routes; Adam went to London to progress his architectural education and worked for a number of architecture practices whilst Darren spent time working for an architects

23 in Zurich before coming home to train as a cabinet maker and worked for a number of design and manufacturing studios in the South East. “The special aspect of what we do is that we get involved in the manufacture and prototyping of the furniture and the interiors that we design,” says Darren. “Wherever our projects are based we try and work with fabricators and suppliers in the area, extracting what’s special from that place, hence the ‘From’ Works.” Adam said: “We’re trying to be sympathetic and sensitive to the surrounding area while making new interventions at the same time. So, trying to find that subtle balance of contemporary addition or insertion to a new project, whilst paying our respects to the surrounding context. “That same approach can be taken to any project, in any location. Whilst we’re keen to promote ourselves locally and in the region, if for instance we had a job in the Outer Hebrides or the south coast, that same design process is taken across all kinds of projects that we work on. “We’re a design-led studio, the quality of the design, making and the materials is at the forefront of every job

Elton Barn

Darren Hancock and Adam Eckworth

that we undertake.” This approach has meant From Works is already beginning to make waves in the design world and the guys already have some interesting projects under their belts. Darren said: “I think the kitchen project at Southgrove Road worked well, we enjoyed doing that and it was a really nice opportunity. The client came to us with an image of some stone on the Peak District, just a little bit of rock with some moss on it as their inspiration, which is great. When you’re trying to come up with a story for a project we enjoy taking it from something that’s a little bit abstract.” It’s clear when speaking to them that the lads are incredibly passionate about the work they do and greedily take inspiration in

RE chair

everything from their local Sheffield surroundings to the architecture books that fill their Bloc Studio office space, in the Cultural industries Quarter. Darren said: “I love the industrial aesthetic of Sheffield, and obviously this area, these buildings are kind of what makes that up. A particular favourite is Portland Works where we photograph some of our furniture pieces.” “For me it’s wandering round Fargate and Castlegate,” says Adam. “I really enjoy being among the few remaining strips of

grandeur that’s left in Sheffield. “And we shouldn’t ignore Park Hill as well, which is undergoing a lot of change at the minute; a monumental bit of architecture that splits and divides opinions.” You never know, From Works could be the next design studio to tackle such a project, but for now they are content building a fantastic reputation locally. Darren added: “Everyone we’ve shown our work to have said it’s great what we’re trying to do. I think in truth this first year was about us figuring out what we wanted to do, what we want to be as a studio and the type of projects we ultimately want to be part of.” If you’re looking for a thoughtfully designed and personal architecture project, or you’re in the market for a new bespoke kitchen, fitted joinery or furniture piece that isn’t ‘off the peg’, then we recommend paying From Works a visit to find out how they can help you create something both beautiful and from Sheffield.

A World Cup matched to world class beer. By Beer Central’s Sean Clarke. WE’VE come to summer. Long lazy days, warming sunshine, blue skies, strawberries, picnics, football, football, football – yep, that’s right… here comes the World Cup! For this month’s column we thought we’d pick out a few games and suggest a beer to go with the occasion, help make your viewing extra special! Sunday 17 June 4pm – Germany vs Mexico (played in Moscow) Brauerei Heller (Bamburg, Germany) – Schlenkerla Helles Lagerbier 4.3%, 500ml bottle Well, we fancy Germany to win this one. The Mexicans always tend to have a competitive team, often decent up front, but the experience, power and skill of the Germans will surely get them a win. With that in mind we’re recommending a delicious and subtly smoked Helles Lager to go with the game. This brewery is more famous for their Schlenkerla Marzen Rauchbier, a real smoky beast, but we reckon their Helles Lager best suits a 4pm kick off and will be easier to drink. The smoke is very subtle, this is brewed as a lager, but it’s different to all the normal lagers you get. Well worth seeking out, would go great with a match snack of cheese, cold meats and crusty bread.

Monday 25 June 7pm – Spain vs Morocco (played in Kaliningrad) Garage Beer Co (Barcelona, Spain) – Triangles Session IPA 5%, 440ml can Morocco qualified comfortably for the World Cup and they’ve got a decent defence that should make them tough to beat. Despite that, and despite Spain losing the magic they had when winning all before them just a few years ago, you have to think Spain can grab a win from this game. We reckon a narrow win, 2-1 maybe. Thankfully the beer we’re suggesting for the game is much more predictable. Garage Triangles is the very best Session IPA we have ever had the pleasure to taste. Garage Beer Co are sending a fresh new load of beers into the UK about a week before this game kicks off. Seek out Triangles, seek out it’s beautiful can, you will remember the beer for much longer than you’re likely to remember the match. Thursday 28 June 7pm – England vs Belgium (played in Kaliningrad) Brouwerij Van Steenberge (Ertvelde, Belgium) – Gulden Draak 10.5%, 330ml bottle This is the final group game for both teams and a lot could depend on the result. Under Gareth Southgate England look more like a team, no major stars, a hard working group with a welcome lack of expectation. Belgium had an outstanding qualification campaign for this tournament and we think they have just enough class to edge out England in a tight encounter. The beer we’ve chosen will serve two purposes. If you follow Belgium then you can celebrate with a classic brew. A 10.5% Belgian Dark Ale, Gulden Draak (named after the Golden Dragon high up on top of the Belfry of Ghent). If you support England, you may be drowning your sorrows with this, but what a beautiful way to go. Flavours of rich dark plums, sour cherries, brown sugar. This beer is a classic, let’s hope the game is too!

THE FOOD OF LOVE Enhance your Tramlines experience with a healthy, made-to-order plant-based picnic from sunshine deli. FOR many, a picnic is a quintessential part of the festival experience, but with all the excitement and hustle and bustle, it can be hard to take a few minutes to stop and relax, to escape the colourful crowds or even simply enjoy a little bite to eat. With that in mind, Sunshine Deli on Penistone Road are preparing to tantalise the tastebuds over the Tramlines weekend and will be serving up a cornucopia of plant-based comfort food, drinks and picnic baskets, to be eaten in, taken away or collected from the borders of Hillsborough Park. What’s more, look out for the Sunshine Deli pop-up bistro at the Tramlines Fringe event, alongside local artist Big Shaun, Steel City Pies, Sarah Mac and The Women of The Seven Hills. The menu promises to be jam-packed with mouth-watering vegan-fusion cuisine, including the hangover full monty, bargin buckets, burgers, kebabs, southern fried chick’n, smoothies, icecream and freak shakes, to name but a few. “In the run up to Tramlines’ first year at Hillsborough Park, we’ve hardly been able to contain our excitement, so we thought,

what a great idea to not only offer up an array of plant-based foods, but also for friends

and families to have a picnic basket delivered,” says Sunshine Deli’s owner, Sarah Short. “You can order through Just Eat or by calling the café, but please do book in advance, as it will take approximately one and a half hours to make up your delivery, as it all comes fresh.” Seitan is used in place of meat and all substitutes are made inhouse by Sarah, as well as all the dips and sauces. Ingredients are also locally sourced from vegan grocery store, Incredible Nutshell on Chesterfield Road. “I’ve always felt guilty about eating meat, even though I like the texture and taste, so because there’s a lot more you can do with vegan food now and because it’s so tasty, I’m finding it amazing. “I’m finding the more I can incorporate into the vegan menu, the more I love it – I absolutely love the banana blossom fish and chips. “What I’ve found about the vegan community is that they absolutely love their food, and there’s a different vibe to it. People have come in and said: I really, really want to try that kebab, I’ve been dreaming about it.” Not attending Tramlines? Don’t worry. Sunshine Deli now offers a one-hour delivery service over a five-mile radius on JUST EAT, or by calling the deli on 0114 285 3366. Board games are all the rage – and there are over 400 to choose from at dedicated café, Treehouse. IF the words ‘board game’ just conjure up memories of grudging games of Monopoly at Christmas, you might be surprised to hear that board gaming as a hobby is in the midst of a huge revival. There are no shortage of theories on the causes for this, but the result is a total reinvention of what board games have to offer, with hundreds of exciting new titles being released each year. Have you ever wondered which of your friends is the best liar? Or if your partner can

hold their nerve in the face of danger? Or whether you’d make a good submarine captain? Or even if your mum has got what it takes to get away with murder? Sitting down together to play a modern board game can help you to discover all this and more! The Treehouse board game café arrived in Sheffield last September and is the first venue of its kind in the city, located just outside the city centre on Boston Street off London Road. The Treehouse provides the

ideal venue to enjoy exploring the world of modern board gaming, offering a library of over 400 titles with expert ‘games gurus’ on hand to help you choose a game and master the rules. Get slimmer for summer Elements MediSpa and the Skinny Shot programme can help you lose weight – and keep it off. ARE you ready to lose weight and feel great this summer? Are diet and exercise not enough to get you past a weight loss plateau? More often than not, our desire to lose weight before an upcoming holiday becomes a last-minute sprint to the finish line, and exercise alone is not enough. If you'd like to drop a few pounds before you hit the beach on your next getaway, the Skinny Shot Programme is available exclusively at Elements MediSpa, and offers a combination of FDA approved and UK licensed prescription medication, alongside personal training sessions, dietary and nutritional advice and a total-body exercise plan, to help you reach and maintain your weight-loss goals. Together with a healthy, calorie-controlled diet, Liraglutide (also known as Saxenda®) offers effective and reliable weight loss by controlling appetite, curbing hunger and reducing cravings for sweet and fatty foods. Saxenda® is an FDA-approved prescription injectable medicine that is different from weight management products you may have taken in the past. It works like an appetite-regulating hormone, known as glucagon-like-peptide (GLP-1), that the body produces naturally. By activating areas of your brain that regulate appetite, Saxenda® makes you feel less hungry, which can lead to lower calorie intake and can help you to not only lose weight, but keep it off. Elements launched this revolutionary treatment at their recent Anti-Ageing Open Day, with a presentation from owner Sandy

Green and personal trainer, Richard Buckley, who works across all the council owned gyms in Doncaster and believes that by combining Saxenda® with personal training sessions, recipients will change the way they think about food and exercise – so the results last. It’s very important to visit an experienced weight loss professional who will design a programme and prescribe the appropriate medication for you. Such professionals are available at Elements MediSpa, who are registered with the Care Quality Commission to offer services in slimming clinics. Call now to book your FREE consultation and achieve weight loss success you never thought was possible, or attend the open evening on Wednesday 20 June to find out more. New bar brings sunshine – and sports – to Kelham. A MEXICAN-themed bar in Kelham Island? Seems like the perfect fit. And with summer upon us, the perfect spot to enjoy a cocktail or two, a taco and maybe even some World Cup football. Even, better, they’re open till 3am meaning this is the latest late bar on the Island. So why Piña? We let owner Joe Cribley explain: “It’s a term commonly used in tequila production. So, when you harvest the agave plant, you take the leaves off and the raw product that remains resembles a pineapple.” So far, so Kelham, right? Naturally they’ll be plenty of tequila on the bar, mezcal and the odd bottle of Pacifico Clara as well as their own draught Piña lager. You’ll need plenty of the latter to wash down the

abundant tacos – meat and veggie/vegan – on offer. We like the sound of the Birria – Jalisco-style braised ox cheek, pickled red onion and coriander, or the veggie style Al Pastor – achiote-marinated aubergine, pineapple, onion, avocado salsa and coriander. Aside from the tacos, there are also some tempting bar snacks, including ceviche, almejas – beer-steamed clams, and churros. We’re already salivating at the thought. Pretty unique to the area as well will be a mezzanine floor dedicated to sports, something Joe was quite keen to add: “I suppose quite selfishly we wanted to create a nice space where we could go and watch

sports with our mates and it’s been really well received so far. “It’s really exciting to have the World Cup and then the great summer sporting events like Wimbledon, Tour De France, Rugby World Cup Sevens. We’ll show the lot!” It’s taken Joe and his team two years to transform this once run-down corner of industrial Sheffield into the riot of colour we see now. It’s light, bright and just begging to be tried. And it’s not just Joe who’s excited to be finally sharing his labour of love with the Sheffield public, bar manager

Cole Johnson is equally enthused: “I think it’s gonna be really good for Kelham Island and there aren’t many bars like this in Sheffield. Hopefully we can tap into that market of late night drinking. Obviously there’s some great pubs in Kelham Island and we’ve got that late licence. If we can be that place that people come to instead of going into town, well that would be mega!” Just one questions remains, though, will they be supporting England or Mexico in the World Cup?

THERE’S nothing quite like a life-saving operation to get the creative juices flowing, is there? All seriousness aside, it’s perhaps not the most conventional route to putting an exhibition together but for Pete McKee, it’s not been a conventional couple of years. Without wanting to dwell too much, the popular Sheffield artist underwent a liver transplant in 2016 and has been taking positive steps on the road to recovery ever since. One thing that has provided a big inspiration in him returning to health has been the desire to get back to work, in particular, putting a new exhibition together. “I came up with the concept, the idea, when I came out of hospital,” Pete explains. “I was really inspired and all I wanted to do was to get back to work straightaway.”

The concept he’s talking about is, This Class Works, which runs from 14-29 July at 92 Burton Road, a venue you’ll probably know as Peddler market. Staying true to Pete’s roots growing up on a council estate, it’s an exploration and celebration of the working class. “It’s quite biographical in some respects, very reflective of my experiences growing up with my family,” Pete says. “It’s not ‘this is a picture of me and this is what I was doing at the time’, it’s more using my life experiences and trying to translate those into images that have a universal appeal. “This show will be definitely more pointed than my past exhibitions, though I’ll still be having my tongue firmly in my cheek in places. I’m very passionate about my roots and hate seeing what is happening to my class in this current political climate. >>>

Pete McKee has overcome adversity to put together an exhibition that shows the pride and resourcefulness of Britain’s working class, it’s work ethic and sense of community.

Pete at 92 Burton Road. “We’ve got a lot of stuff to put up,” he said. “It’s not just mine. It’s going to be hell!”

“It’s important for me to show the spirit of the working class; the pride, hope, fight, passion and resourcefulness that has been their foundation. I grew up on a council estate the youngest of four. My dad was a steelworker and my mum a factory line worker and everyone around us was as poor as we were. “I look back on those times with fondness of how we seemed to survive on tenacity and an unfailing hope that better was around the corner. I want the exhibition to highlight the nobleness and dignity of the working class, then and now and for those who visit this exhibition to leave exhilarated and enlightened to its beauty.” The crux of This Class Works seems to be being able to take the positives from what is often seen as a negative situation. It shouldn’t be, but it so often is. Pete is socialist in his views but is keen to point out that this exhibition isn’t a political manifesto and while it looks at the nostalgia at what was once deemed working class life it also looks at its modern interpretation too. “It’s a reaction to how the working class, over the years, has been bastardised and now that the aspiration of the norm is a middle class lifestyle,” references Pete. “If the working class buys a flat screen TV then they’re criticised for it. It’s become a very negative thing. I just wanted to bring it back to the positive; comradeship, kinship, community… they’re the sort of things people don’t forget, it still exists. “The way we define what a working class job is has changed now. Whereas it was very easy to say it’s a steelworker going to work while his wife stays at home or has a part-time job, now it’s everybody had to work and two jobs isn’t necessarily enough.” Speaking to Pete, his passion is clearly evident and this exhibition is yet another labour of love. But having the concept was one thing, putting it into practice was another, particularly given the state of his health. Could he physically produce all the work that was required to put on another exhibition? Fortunately, Pete had an idea…

Partly to lighten the load, and partly because the artist enjoys working with those of a like mind, Pete decided to make the exhibition collaborative. “I thought if I had it half collaborative, half my work, then I would at least give myself space not to push myself too hard because my wife was really worried I’d end up back in hospital,” Pete recalls. “I was over-stressing myself and I’d only been out of hospital a week. Just as a bargaining point I thought, okay, fair enough, I’ll make sure I get some other artists involved.” Not one to do things by halves, Pete had plenty of people in mind and not just artists but musicians, actors, designers, photographers and poets. After setting them a brief – “this is the theme of the show, this is the story I want to get across but I want it in your voice and in your inimitable style – Pete gave the contributors free reign. To say we’re excited to see the results is an understatement. The featured artists include sculptor Anthony Bennett, poet JB Barrington, artist Jo Peel, musician Martyn Ware, actress Maxine Peake and photographer Natasha Bright as well as contributions from Tish Murtha, Sarah Jane Palmer and Jon McClure. The exhibition has become much more of an event and is part of the reason why it’s been spread over 16 days and Pete has made the decision to sell tickets, which to be fair, are a bargain at £5 and include a programme. It’s something that the public have taken to. “I’ve been blown away by the reaction,” beams Pete. “I was worried because all of my exhibitions in the past have been free, turn up and enjoy. With this one, I wanted to make sure that it’s not a bun fight to get around and see the work in the first two days and then no-one turns up after that.” In addition to the exhibition, Pete has also organised a series of events to enhance the experience. This include Clubland – a tribute to a working men’s club night at Crookes Social Club (which sold

SUMMER 2018 / ISSUE 46

out in half an hour); an historical walking tour and a screening of Ken Loach’s The Spirit of 45, which will be held at the Showroom Cinema. “I wanted it to be almost like a mini-festival, a celebration,” Pete enthuses. “I didn’t just want it be just one show that was on for one day. Being a 16-day show we could get other things involved in it, I wanted it to be as big as I could possibly make it.” With collaborations and events in place, Pete was just left with the small matter of producing his own work, which is no mean feat

given that he usually sets himself a target of 25-30 paintings. “That to me is enough work for people to come down and feel they’ve seen something,” Pete says of his ambitious target. “I thought I might not get there because of my health but I’m well enough to be able to do that and inspired enough to do that so I’m really happy and really, really delighted with the work I’ve done for this show. “I’m always pleased with the work but I’ve done a couple of things in this, painting-wise, that I think I’ve really pushed myself with and I’m really pleased with the result. Some pieces have become a little bit more personal and reflective but then the rest of it is purely straight-down, 100 per cent what I’m known for.” It all sounds very good to us. If you haven’t got a ticket already, I suggest you get one now. Never mind This Class Works, This Man Deserves a Medal might be a more appropriate title.

This Class Works runs from 14-29 July at 92 Burton Road. For tickets visit www.thisclassworks.com

Contain yourself. Tramlines is almost here. seeking an alternative form of entertainment. Music-wise, there’s also been some notable additions to the already stellar line-up. Chief amongst these is Tokio Myers, a London musician and pianist and winner of Britain’s Got Talent 2017 who released his debut album to great acclaim at the end of last year. Guardian ‘One To Watch’ Tom Grennan will headline the Leadmill Stage on Sunday as part of ‘The Reverend Jon McClure presents’ line-up, with his unique “polished pop-soul with a wideboy touch”. He will be joined by Sheafs, Spring King and new Sheffield band, Sophie and the Giants. The much-loved Sheffield band, Everly Pregnant Brothers, will also play with their ukuleles and a lethal line in lyrics with covers of anything from Coldplay to Kings of Leon.

THE countdown is on. By the time you read this, Tramlines will be just weeks – that’s WEEKS – away from taking place in Hillsborough Park. And we can’t wait. New to the festival this year will be a comedy line-up which will be raising the roof on the Leadmill Stage. It’s an exceptional offering, with TV regular and much-loved standup Henning Wehn, Sheffield’s own fictional singersongwriter John Shuttleworth, “Britain’s only goth, lesbian, transsexual comedian” Bethany Black, Canadian and Mock the Week star Tom Stade, and Edinburgh Comedy Award winner Tom Wrigglesworth. The move to Hillsborough Park will see earlier opening hours and an enhanced familyfriendly environment, meaning Tramlines is about much more than the music. The Into The Trees area debuted last year but returns in a larger setting. Nestled in a section of park surrounded by a ring of impressive trees, the area will come alive with twinkling lights and visually exciting décor. It’s here, by day, that families can find tailoired programming to entertain the kids, and by night, the colourful party DJs come out to play for the festival’s later stayers. Friday will see the Sheffield-based Village Screen Presents bring a pop-up cinema to the festival screening family favourites and cult classics. By night, festival goers can look forward to Club Tropicana, which brings eighties pop, disco and timeless anthems all night long. The pop-up cinema returns during the day on both Saturday and Sunday with a kids’ disco between films, but also comes the Responsible

Fishing team who will invite kids into to their woodland workshop. This promises to be a relaxing space for visitors to reconnect with nature - with the added activity of gravity defying stone balancing! Over both Saturday and Sunday at Tramlines, guests can runaway to the circus tent with Jamboree Arts to learn wobbly circus skills, from walking the tight wire to juggling and acrobatics, with circus artists and tutors on hand to turn novices into accomplished circus performers. The Cool Beans Roadshow Mega DJ Party gear things up a notch at Into The Trees on Saturday night with an energetic, interactive and amusing hour of power from the hosting duo who are guaranteed to leave smiles on faces – think Vic & Bob with decks and a mixer! On Sunday night, the arts collective Fruit N Juice take charge with a focus on empowering and celebrating everything feminine and queer. Expect sounds from R&B to Kylie and everything in between.

Sheffield’s Doc/Fest celebrating 25 years doesn’t seem quite possible – has it really been that long? – but we’re glad it is, and it’s better than ever. THERE’S a real buzz about Sheffield’s Doc/Fest this year, not least because it’s the documentary film festival’s 25th anniversary. To mark this notable milestone, Doc/Fest, which takes place from 7-12 June, will be screening 200 features over six days and there’ll be 27 interactive and immersive projects as well as seven virtual reality installations. In case you were wondering how you’re going to fit it all in, we take a look at some of the highlights.

7 June A Northern Soul

The festival opens with the world premiere of Yorkshire-born Sean McAllister’s film which sees him return to his hometown of Hull where he meets and starts filming Steve Arnott, a struggling warehouse worker by day and hip-hop performer by night, who harbours his own creative dream. Both Sean and Steve will be in attendance at Sheffield City Hall to take part in a post-screening Q&A.

9 June Ex-Shaman Screening at the Showroom, this film looks at how the uncontacted tribe from Amazônia, ‘Paiter Surui’, has been encroached upon by modernity since its first contact with the white man in 1969. Smartphones, electricity, gas tanks, guns, and Facebook replace traditional forms of life. In the midst of this new world, an ex-shaman who was forced into evangelical Christianity struggles to cure the suffering people of his village, and faces the wrath of spirits of the forest, who are upset he has abandoned them.

8 June Blue Note Records: Beyond the Notes This film, to be shown at the Odeon, explores the vision behind the iconic American jazz record label. Through current recording sessions, rare archive and conversations with iconic Blue Note artists, the film reveals an intimate perspective of a legacy that continues to be vital in today’s political climate.

10 June Of Fathers & Sons

11 June Grenfell

The Showroom will host this UK premiere which sees Syrian director Talai Derki, posing as a sympathetic war photographer, gain access to the world of minesweeper Abu Osama, who is raising his many young sons to be Jihadi fighters. Shot over two years amongst a Northern Syrian militia fighting for an Islamic caliphate, this is an intimate and unforgettable foray into extremist religious indoctrination.

Hugely topical due to the opening of the inquiry. Filmed across the year following the Grenfell tragedy, this documentary features accounts from the people whose lives were irrevocably changed by the most devastating tower block fire in British history. Directed by Ben Anthony and from executive producer Morgan Matthews, Grenfell encompasses multiple voices from the community – as well as interviews with those who were in positions of responsibility.

48 We caught up with Tabby Teas owners to tell us about how life has been for Sheffield’s first cat café.

SHEFFIELD’S first feline hangout was opened by Charlotte Pickering and her partner Michael Leviston after Charlotte, a self-confessed animal lover, discovered videos of cat cafés in China, which is where the phenomenon originates. “I’d seen it over the vastness of the internet and thought this is it, this is me – I’ve found my calling!” says Charlotte. “It took a while because I didn’t even know if there were any in England and then I discovered there were others popping up in Nottingham and London, which was interesting.” Charlotte and Michael then spent a month renovating a former warehouse on Cemetery Road making it a cat-friendly haven, and it will soon be coming up for a year

since they opened their doors. “We’ve had a good reaction and got a good reputation for ourselves so far,” says Charlotte. “At the start we were still learning stuff, like how many people to have in and stuff, but we’ve got a good amount that we allow to come in now, so that it’s never too much for the cats and so you have a good interaction yourself. “For us the pyramid goes; cats, customers, then us – the cats come first!” They ensure that they maintain a happy bunch of cats

at all times by only allowing a max of 15 people at a time into the café (there’s 11 cats on the premises), as well as making sure patrons adhere to a few house rules, like ‘don’t wake a sleeping cat, or don’t pick up the cats, but if a cat sits on you, then that’s cool – you’re the chosen one.’ Charlotte said: “We don’t have young children in screaming and pulling tails, because we don’t want to upset the cats. It’s got to be right for them because it’s their environment. Generally most people are very good and they get the concept. “We’ve got loads of regulars. There’s some crazy-cat ladies and some crazy-cat men and it’s really nice because they sometimes bring things in for the charities we work with.”

The guys work with Millhouse Animal Sanctuary, which is where the majority of the moggies in the café have been rescued from. These cats aren’t up for adoption but customers interested in adopting

a cat will be given information on nearby shelters, and everybody will be given the option to donate to shelters like Millhouse during their visit. There’s no better time to visit than over the coming months as there will be a host of new events coming to the café, ranging from tea experiences with experts, art classes doing life drawing of the cats, cat yoga – ‘which is basically yoga with the kitties doing their thing – as well as board game and quiz nights. The café opens 11am-6pm during the week and 10am6pm at the weekend, which is the café’s busiest times. They they advise to book in advance to avoid disappointment. Dropins are available in the week, making it the perfect venue to hook up to Tabby Net and get some work done surrounded by purring partners. Before opening Tabby Teas Charlotte spent some time volunteering with Sheffield Animal Centre, learning how to care for lots of cats at once. Customers will be charged £7.50 for 90 minutes in the café, with the money going towards the cost of keeping the cats fed, watered and above all, happy. Keep up-to-date with Tabby Teas on Facebook and look out for event announcements.

Welcome to Sheffield's first cat cafe! Relax & unwind in the company of cats... A relaxing and calming environment for both customers and cats to enjoy each other's company. Whether you are coming with a group of friends, or venturing by yourself for some kitty cuddles, we're sure you'll have the purr-fect time!
