Welcome to CityMag... SEASON’S greetings and welcome to the Winter edition of CityMag. We’re catching you just as the Christmas season well and truly kicks in and we have plenty of things for you to do over the festive period, from organising a memorable party to gifts from Sheffield independents and a round-up of what’s happening on New Year’s Eve. Make sure you start 2018 with a bang. Elsewhere we look at some new openings – Public, we’re talking to you – spoke to Joe Carnall ahead of Milburn’s Christmas Plug gig and look at more positive news for Park Hill. Which leads us nicely onto the cover. A big thank you to Bryan John for painting us this wintery perspective of Park Square and the bright but Brutalist view of this modern marvel. We get the feeling that there’s lots more to come in Sheffield in 2018 with the further development of Kelham Island, the progression of the retail quarter and who knows what else. We’ll do our best to keep you up to date on what’s happening around the city – don’t forget to keep picking up your copy of CityMag. Enjoy the festivities.

WHAT a year this has been. Sheffield is definitely a city on the upturn. Here’s what I’ve loved: Public, Butcher and Catch, Old Workshop, OHM, The Devonshire, The Forum’s new look, Light Cinema, Bocelli, Country Club, Peddler, Stew & Oyster and Joro to name a few! Hopefully there’ll be lots more to come in 2018. The Moor Market continues to impress and is the ideal place to stock up for the festive season. We find everything from turkeys to trimmings and wreaths to right-on gifts for the whole family. We also cast an envious glance to our northern neighbours just up the M1. Whilst it is great for a spot of retail therapy we visit safe in the knowledge Sheffield is on the right path to catching them up rather soon! Enjoy this quarterly Winter issue and keep checking www.sheffieldvibe.com each day for all the latest news on the Steel City – over the last 12 months more than 750,000 of you have embraced Vibe and we couldn’t be more thankful for your support! Merry Christmas now let’s get on the advocaat sesh (gip)! Melanie Jackson Publishing Manager

9 Adam Driver returns as Kylo Ren in Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi

ON SCREEN… STAR WARS EPISODE VIII: THE LAST JEDI 14 December

Wait for VIII. That’s what everyone’s been telling us, well, since VII came out two years ago. To say this film has been kept under wraps is an understatement. What we do know is that Luke Skywalker has a much more prominent role as he trains Rey in the ways of the Force, Finn and Poe will be buddying up again and Kylo Ren (and the mysterious Snoke) will be the one everyone’s out to stop. Or is he? You’ll have to wait to find out.

ON STAGE… AS FIRST LEAD ROLES GO, THERE’S PERHAPS NONE BIGGER THAN DOROTHY IN THE WIZARD OF OZ. GABRIELLE BROOKES CAN’T WAIT FOR THE CURTAIN TO OPEN... BY HANNAH SANDERS. JOIN Dorothy and all her friends for the glorious technicolour production of the timeless classic, The Wizard of Oz. Skip along the yellow brick road and journey through Munchkinland all the way to Oz. Gabrielle Brookes will be taking to the stage as Dorothy in her first lead role. She trained at Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts and has appeared in numerous musicals on the West End, and more recently as Becca in Everybody Loves Jamie at Sheffield’s’ Crucible Theatre. Here Gabrielle talks about what we can expect from the musical and why it is important to encourage younger generations to become involved in the arts. How did it feel when you were cast as Dorothy, and how do you relate to the character? I couldn’t have been more excited. The Wizard of Oz and Dorothy holds a special place in my heart. She is optimistic and wide-eyed which is 100 per cent me. She sort of has her head in the clouds and values friendship and family above anything, so I can relate to the character. What can we expect from the performance? A lot of joy, magic and heart. Our director, Rob Hastie, stressed to us that first and foremost we are telling a great story for families. There will also be beautiful

WINTER 2017 / ISSUE 44

costumes and an incredible set. Storywise you will be getting a classic but there will be a few little twists thrown in, however you will have to wait and see. What are you most looking forward to about the production? I love being in Sheffield, as I think the audiences bring such warmth and heart to a performance, so I am really excited to share the story with them. A friend also made me realise that although it is such an iconic story, there will be lots of children who won’t have seen it, meaning I’ll be their first Dorothy, which is amazing. What do you think is the key to a good musical? Although it is great having all the bells and whistles – I love that part – putting the story first, and what you want your message to be is key. It’s also important to make the audience smile. Why do you think it is important to encourage younger generations to become involved in the arts? Above all the arts brings people together. It is a way to tell our own stories and allows us to understand each other. For children it is a great thing to develop their confidence but I think at age any the arts are important as we need to be able to understand each other’s tales.

GURU

Planning a Christmas or new year shindig? Get some advice from the experts and make sure your party is remembered for the right reasons. CityMag speaks to Freshly Squeezed’s Laura Thomas. I imagine this is a busy time of year for you?

Yes, very! We’ve been working on conferences for the past few months and have started planning events for the first quarter of next year, but now we’re into Christmas party season so that’s keeping us very busy. What’s your background?

I started working in the events industry nine years ago as a part-time wedding co-ordinator. I decided to pursue this at university, so I started at Sheffield Hallam on the Events Management course and graduated in 2012. Following university, I began working for a marketing company helping to organise training sessions, workshops and an annual conference for Academic Venues. I found that I enjoyed organising business events a lot more, so when me and my business partner started up Freshly Squeezed in 2014, we decided to focus on corporate events. You must be well organised!

People always presume this and I suppose to an extent I am. I’ve always been a list maker which helps to keep me organised, but I’m definitely less organised in my personal life than I am at work. Events planning requires a lot of multitasking and good time management so I’m a bit obsessive over spreadsheets to make sure I don’t miss anything.

You’re based in perhaps one of the coolest buildings in Sheffield. What’s that experience been like?

We’ve had an office in Krynkl at Kelham Island since January 2017. It’s a pretty cool space made from shipping containers and we’ve got some interesting businesses for neighbours. There’s a new yoga studio and beauty salon opening in the next few weeks and they’ve also got a start-up initiative competition running at the moment for the chance to win a years’ free office space – which is definitely worth checking out! What are your top tips to organising a successful party?

Get the food and drink right…everyone always remembers the food at an event so if this is tasty then you’re off to a good start. And if all else fails, if everyone is drunk they won’t remember how good or bad it was. Entertainment is also important, you don’t want a moody acoustic singer at a party where you want people to be up dancing, so making sure that this matches the atmosphere you’re trying to achieve. Like I mentioned above and particularly if it’s a large event, spreadsheets will be your best friend. Keep a note of important details like dietary requirements or special requests because little touches always impress people on the day. What’s the best party you’ve ever been to?

I think she’d kill me if she knew I’d called it a party, but one

WINTER 2017 / ISSUE 44

016 - 017 City Winter17_Layout 1 06/12/2017 11:17 Page 2

17 of the best events I’ve been to was my friend’s wedding. She got married in Santorini in September so a small group of us flew out for a week. They got married in a beautiful venue on a cliff side at sunset… it was incredible! It was a really intimate ceremony and I loved how personal everything felt. And the worst?!

I wouldn’t say it was a disaster… but a few years ago I was invited to a client’s Christmas party. I arrived a bit late and thought I’d gone to the wrong place because it was so quiet! There was only around five people from the whole company there (and me!) but there was enough food and drink for about 200… and a singer playing her guitar to an empty room. I made the most of it, but it was a bit awkward and must have cost them a fortune. I found out later that they’d left sending invites out to the last minute so most of their employees had other plans or couldn’t find child care. I think because of my job I can be a bit critical at all events but that was probably one of the worse! What the rookie mistakes that most people make?

One of the biggest things we’ve found is people tend to leave event planning to the last minute. It’s often not a priority and by the time you come to organise something it can be a bit of a mad rush, so allowing enough time will mean you don’t forget to do something and gives your guests plenty of notice too. Another common mistake people make is not taking into consideration all of their guests needs. Just because the event is something you’d enjoy, doesn’t mean your friends’ six-year-old or grandma will have the same experience. Put yourself in their position and try to accommodate for everyone.

What are your plans for Christmas and New Year?

We’re very busy with events right through until the week before Christmas and then again from the first week of January, but I’ve managed to book in a quick trip to New York with my boyfriend. He’s working there in the run up to Christmas so I’m flying out for a few days to do the last of my Christmas shopping and hopefully see some snow. I land back on Christmas Eve so I’ll head back to Liverpool for Christmas Day with my family and then back to Sheffield for New Year. Despite being an event planner, I’m not a big fan of New Year’s Eve and tend to do something with just a few friends rather than a big party. Given that you’re an event planner, do friends and family automatically turn to you to organise things for them?

Yes! Literally everyone. Luckily, we only run business events so I have the perfect excuse to get out of planning a family member’s birthday party. I have been roped into helping with friend’s hen dos a lot though. I’m happy to give advice or make venue suggestions etc. where I can, but I do find planning events for friends and family more stressful than client events. What can we see from Freshly Squeezed in 2018?

We’re all over the UK in January running a series of events from Glasgow down to Brighton and everywhere in between, so that will keep us busy. We’ve got some exciting events taking us through to summer and we’ll be celebrating our fourth birthday in April. So our 2018 is looking to be a good one!

18 THORNBRIDGE – TONTTU (330ml bottle and 6% ABV) Our good friends at Thornbridge had better be wrapping our Christmas presents right now, can’t wait to see what treats they’ll put under the tree! Haha… in the meantime, they’ve recently launched a brand new Christmas beer and it’s been very popular over the last few weeks. Tonttu (means Elf in Finnish according to our Scandinavian friends!) is a red ale which uses Enigma hops from Australia. Expect a tropical fruit character that works beautifully with a little malt sweetness with it being a red ale. We reckon Santa would like this and it’ll certainly match his outfit.

*

It’s Christmas! Beer Central’s Sean Clarke is in a festive mood. BY the time you read this we’re hoping it’s been snowing for weeks and that Sheffield has at least three new ski resorts high up somewhere up in the hills! We love the snow, we love Christmas and we love Christmas beers. Let’s hope the ‘white stuff’ is settling right now and that somewhere in Sheffield you have a roaring fire burning away – keep warm and enjoy these three festive brews… SAMUEL SMITHS – WINTER WELCOME (500ml bottle and 6% ABV) A limited edition brew that Sam Smiths release every November/December. A rich, malty body results from fermentation in traditional stone Yorkshire squares and it’s all balanced against whole-dried Fuggle and Golding hops. An annual event, with a new and exclusive label every year – search it out, enjoy the bleak midwinter, Winter Welcome will keep you warm and happy!

*

SALTAIRE – WHITE CHRISTMAS (500ml bottle and 4.5% ABV) Saltaire have a fantastic stable of beers, led by the always popular Triple Chocoholic, Raspberry Blonde and Hazelnut Coffee Porter. This time of year they always brew the beer that everyone wants – a White Christmas. This one’s a pale and refreshing brew with Vienna malts and a light hop flavour. The addition of coriander seed and orange peel really do make this a seasonal tipple the whole of Yorkshire should try!

Spend a penny – and lots more – at Sheffield’s cool new speakeasy. I’M sure you’ve already (if not, why not?), but if you’ve yet to discover the latest venture from the people behind the The Great Gatsby and Picture House Social, we’ve done all the hard work for you – and even had a drink or two. So, what’s the verdict? Well, we are delighted to confirm that it is hands down the best converted public toilet bar we’ve ever been in! The bar is unrecognisable from its former vocation as a public convenience and before you ask, it doesn’t have a funny smell. In fact, the only clue to its past life is the tiled walls, which have been left in their original state. You’ll have already seen the colour scheme on Instagram and flashes of pink and green, mixed with wood panels and green velvet upholstered seating, run throughout, giving a classy finish to the joint. The bar fitters at Rocket Designs have done a fantastic job and the owners have really thought of everything, right down to the menus which deserve a special mention. They are designed to feel like a hardback notebook, but with a hidden story within. One page has a handwritten note and some scribbles saying ‘man fell down steps wen snow

was forling. He was werring leather shoes at 2.00pm.’ It turns out this is the former janitor’s handwriting, who retired in 2006 (they’ve not been able to contact him as yet) and the Public logo has been made up using some of the letters in his notebooks. So, to the cocktails. We were given three to sample while we were there. The first was Public’s ‘draft’ cocktail (yes, it’s actually on tap), which is a yummy take on mulled wine including rosé wine and star anise. Next up was a garibaldi, made with Campari and fluffed orange juice (it’s also worth noting that to reduce its plastic waste none of the drinks come with plastic straws). To finish we had the Public Highball, Public’s own blended scotch, salt baked pears steeped in Sauvignon Blanc and topped with soda – this one comes highly recommended. With all that said, I’ll leave it to my wife to have the final word. Sarah said: “They’ve pulled off the speakeasy vibe without being too ‘themed’. Cocktails were gorgeous, staff were attentive and the music was great. The toilets are an experience!” And we’ll leave you to ponder that one.

WITH Father Christmas’ sleigh fast approaching here’s our roundup of the best places in The Moor Market to get those Christmas essentials, last minute gifts and that most important of all Christmas goodies… cheese.

Cheese First up is Sue and John Youdan at S & J’s Pantry, who offer all the festive cheesy goodness you could shake a cracker at. From Yorkshire Wensleydale with cherries and brandy to strong cheddar with whisky or gin and lemon Cheshires, S & J’s have a wide range of cheeses that they are happy to turn into a cheese board for you whatever your budget. But what is a Christmas cheese without chutney? Never fear, S & J’s have it in hand with a special range of Christmas chutneys. Sue said: “We’ve got the Christmas preserve from Mrs Darlington, the cherry curd with brandy, the cranberry sauce with port and the beautiful mincemeat with brandy ready for all your homemade pies.” Christmas just wouldn’t be the same without it.

There’s something for everyone down at The Moor Market this Christmas and with the big day just a few weeks away here’s our guide to fill all your festive needs in the build up. By Ashley Birch.

Turkey If you’re going for a traditional turkey as the centrepiece for your Christmas dinner then look no further than Slattery’s. Owner John Galley said: “They’re all Gressinghams which are the best we can buy at the moment. We’ve got owt from 8lb in weight to 20lb in weight at two quid a pound, which is £4.40 a kilo, which is very cheap.” You’ll need to be quick to order one though as John tells us they sell out every year. Just down the way the renowned Waterall’s pork butchers have got in plenty of gammon joints, pork joints, pork pies, sausages and pigs in blankets to cover the rest of your Christmas fayre. They’ve also started taking orders so you’ll need to be quick.

Last minute gifts

Karon Brock of Meadowhead Flowers has plenty of festive wreaths, Christmas flowers and box bouquets to deck the halls of your house with Christmas cheer. The wreaths range from £8-15 and bouquets can be anything from around £10 right up to £30-40 depending on what you choose. Karon said: “We’ve also got little nick-nacks and Christmas decorations as well as little Christmas gifts. We’re doing plants that have got a Christmas feel to them, we’re doing terrariums, boxed orchids, anything that is quite festive. Cacti and succulents are really, really fashionable and popular at the moment so we’ll be doing those as well.” If you’re like us at CityMag you’ll already have your tree up so what better way than a visit to Meadowhead Flowers for those finishing touches.

The day of our visit was the turn of Lizzie and her handcrafted jewellery business, A Charm of Magpies, and graphic design student Emily and her Sheffield themed artwork, Dorothy was Right. Lizzie said: “There are various different companies that have got different days on the stall, including Poochie Presents.”

All through December Sheffield Hallam University have a pop-up stall up and running in the Moor Market as part of its enterprise scheme. The idea is that students or recent graduates take their businesses to the stall for a few days at a time selling whatever goods they want.

Something to eat While you’re in the market sorting out all these Christmas bits you’ll no doubt work up a bit of an appetite and we highly recommend trying out the Nepalese thali from Hungry Buddha. For under a fiver you can get a gorgeous curry with rice, dal, pickle and achar. It’s great stuff! On top of all that, smack in the middle of the market, there is a giant advent calendar where each day another clue that leads to one of the Moors stores is revealed. If you correctly guess the store you’ll be in with a chance to ‘win Christmas’ and some fantastic prizes.

Beer Our friend Sean Clarke at Beer Central is on his game all year round bringing you the finest local and worldwide craft ales and speciality beers, and Christmas is no exception. Sean said: “We’ve got an extensive range of Christmas beers from local brewers such as Belgian Blue to sour goses from Denmark. We cover the full spectrum. We’ve got a lot of modern craft beers which is unusual because often the modern craft operators don’t tend to link into Christmas. So we’ve got something for everyone.” They have gift boxes, ale crates and mini kegs ranging from £10 to £30 plus. They also have other quirkier options such as mead, glassware from Kelham, Bradfield and Delirium, and cookbooks.

24 Last-minute gift idea Struggling to know what to get for the person who already has everything? Why not let them decide with a city centre gift card? The new, first-of-its-kind gift card scheme from Sheffield’s Business Improvement District (BID) has launched, just in time for Christmas. The scheme works in the same way as a store gift card would but can be redeemed at a number Sheffield’s city centre businesses including over 60 chains and independents. Businesses to sign up so far include Atkinson’s department store, independent café Ink and Water, high street footwear brand Schuh, new coffee shop on the block Mangobean, high street favourites M&S, Debenhams, John Lewis, Thorntons and restaurants such as Silversmiths, Cubana and Piccolinos, plus many more. The Sheffield Gift Card can be bought online at www.sheffieldgiftcard.co.uk and can be loaded with anything from £5 to £200.

On the growl Abbeydale Road’s Hop Hideout has added a ‘growler’ option to its home delivery service – perfect for Christmas. They will be offering 750ml growler fills, which are currently swing-top glass brown bottles for delivery, but other size growlers can be filled in store. Its carbon dioxide fill system will keep beer fresh for up to a week when kept in the fridge. Knock yourself out.

TRAMLINES ON THE MOVE

So, it’s all systems go, Tramlines’ proposed move to Hillsborough Park has been approved by the council. Festival director Sarah McNulty said: “I’m delighted that our license for Hillsborough Park has been approved. We can now put our plans into practice as we celebrate the tenth anniversary with the biggest and best Tramlines to date. “The first line-up announcement will be early next year so please keep an eye on our website and social media channels. We are working closely with Sheffield city council on the city centre proposition to ensure that it remains a core part of the weekend and more information on those plans will be released in the new year.”

Winter gin True North Brew Co has announced a winter edition of the popular Sheffield Dry Gin to see in this year’s festivities. The first of the foraged range uses flavours that sprout naturally in the local area. The winter edition will be a fruity gin with nutmeg, vanilla, cinnamon and locally foraged figs and victoria plums. Available in the usual True North outlets.

ITALIAN ADDITION Veeno’s Italian Wine Cafe is set to open a branch in Sheffield on 14 December on Ecclesall Road. The Italian restaurant chain has 17 other restaurants in the UK and will move into the space previously occupied by Carluccio’s. Sheffield vegans rejoice! A new vegan membership card is now available, offering discounts on vegan options at some of Sheffield’s favourite independents. It currently boasts offers for ten per cent off vegan meals at Nether Edge Pizza Company, ten per cent off online orders at vegan chocolatier Truffle Pig, and a special vegan thali at Urban Choola among many others. The V Card’s founder, former partner and founding member of vegan caterers Fanfare, Rheanna Griffin said: “It is a way of encouraging people to choose vegan options and helping business to get it out there that they have these options. “There is such an incredible prevalence of vegan options in Sheffield and this is a way of channelling that. Sheffield’s really the place to be to be vegan. “I am vegan myself for ethical reasons and therefore the card is a way to further promote this environmentally conscious and animal friendly way of living by supporting businesses to offer more vegan products, by promoting them through the card and by offering deals so it becomes even more fun and attractive to choose a vegan lifestyle.” Visit www.thevcard.club

Null and Void A new craft beer and gin bar has opened up in Kelham Island as the area continues to grow. Null and Void is, for now, a temporary venture by local lad Lee Carnall. Lee opened the pop-up bar as plans for a permanent venue on Green Lane were put on hold. “It is a temporary thing for now, but that doesn’t mean to say it will finish once the Green Lane venue is confirmed. We’ll see how it goes. I love the space. “If it doesn’t do well, we’ll move Null and Void to the permanent venue, but if not we’ll keep it and have a new name for the new venue.”

New exhibition The latest work by artist Dan Holdsworth will make its UK debut as part of a new solo exhibition opening at Sheffield’s Graves Gallery this December. Charting Holdsworth’s explorations of the relationship between landscape photography, science and technology, Mapping the Limits of Space will present the artist’s most recent series, Continuous Topography, alongside key works from the last seven years. The series is the result of painstaking fieldwork which saw Holdsworth collaborate with a research geologist to capture hundreds of photographic images. These images were subsequently processed through GPS technology and sophisticated software to create a unique 3D model of the landscape, with every contour mapped in seemingly impossible detail. The works, which Holdsworth calls a form of “future archaeology”, deftly place the landscape in the context of the geological ages through which it has developed and will ultimately degrade. Stock up on some clobber If you’re into your clobber and you’re after a new pair of jeans then we’ve got great news for you –denim shop Clobber Calm Supply Co is now open in Kelham Island. The raw salvaged denim wear company becomes the latest independent to join the ‘Island’ on Percy Street, just off Burton Street and on the same row as The Sheffield Brewery. Owner Benjamin Woodhouse has a longstanding love of bloke’s clothing and started posting pics on an Instagram feed about a year ago, little did he know that the seeds of his business would grow from there. As well as jeans they will be the only place in Sheffield to stock Redwing boots. Ben said: “People round here are buying in because you can’t get them anywhere else in Sheffield. None of the things we sell have been knocked up in China. It’s all made in the US and built to last.” Visit www.clobbercalmsupply.co to find out more.

ALL UPHILL FROM HERE Sheffield City Council has appointed an EXTREME Destinations-led consortium to reimagine the slopes and surrounding areas of the former Sheffield Ski Village as a 48acre sustainable sports, leisure and entertainment development. They claim that 100 new full time jobs will result from the £22.5million development, which should see Sheffield’s muchloved ski slopes and mountain bike tracks brought back to life in phase one of the project, which could be completed as early as 2019. EXTREME also hopes to bring a combination of action and adventure sports facilities, including the possibility of an indoor skydiving facility, live music, e-gaming and virtualreality hub as well as restaurants, bars and themed accommodation.

He maybe new to the artworld but Bryan John’s colourful cityscapes have been quick to capture the imagination. Although, for this season’s showpiece, he’s captured winter in all its grey, gloomy glory.

Tell us about your cover.

Do you have a day job or are you a full-time artist?

As it is the December issue, I wanted to try to capture Sheffield in wintertime. I’ve tried to paint the winter before but it’s difficult with my colourful style – which is better suited to the other seasons. So for this painting I decided to completely mute the colours – using greys and blues to give the impression of coldness. But I have picked out the bright colours from Park Hill flats and used blocks of greens in order to make it recognisable as one of mine. I always said I’d try to keep away from painting the big Sheffield landmarks, but I have always loved the view of Park Hill from under the tram bridge so I decided to go for it!

I’d love to paint full-time but it’s hard to consistently earn a living from it. I work part-time in a library in Derbyshire to top it up. I am also studying part-time for a PhD in public history at York University.

What’s your background?

I only started painting last year. I’ve always loved art – in particular the German Expressionists and their use of colour. But I’ve always been that person who always thinks they’ll be good at things – but never actually try it. So this time I had to give it a go. I felt my first painting of – my daughter – was relatively successful so I was encouraged enough to continue.

How would you describe your style?

I do call myself an Expressionist although I’m probably best described as a Colourist. The German Expressionists’ work was cut short by WW1 when Macke and Marc were killed and the experiences of war saw a move into abstraction by the remaining artists – presumably as an escape. So I think there’s still mileage in Expressionism as a style – and I have noticed a few Expressionists and Colourists have started to emerge. But, unlike the German Expressionists, my work leans towards realism (exaggerated colours aside). I do hope to loosen up with my style a bit in the future, but sticking with representation over abstraction. What are you working on at the moment?

I’m trying to have a quiet December – this last month has been

29 really hectic – I’ve just completed ten pieces for an exhibition in Buckinghamshire, which I did in about four weeks! In the new year I will start work on a series of Berlin paintings – as I’ve recently visited. I also want to paint some Rotherham street scenes, as I have worked with the guys from the Sorting Office gallery there who are kind enough to display some of my work. I’d like to repay them by creating some work for the locals to enjoy. From where do your draw your inspiration?

As well as the Expressionists, I have always been interested in 17th century Dutch town paintings as I studied that period for my first MA at Sheffield Uni. They are social documents as well as art. Capturing Sheffield in 2017 has been interesting in that sense as the city is rapidly changing and, however insignificant that it may be, I am documenting that change. I recently painted Green Lane in Kelham Island and a few days later the building I featured in it was knocked down. My work also draws a lot from colour theorists such as Goethe – mainly working with complementary colours.

work should be out there – for an exhibition at least! There are some great pop-up art galleries along the east side of the river by the remains of the Berlin Wall – doing something along there would be amazing. What does the future hold?

I hope to continue to improve and progress my style. I will no doubt continue to paint the streets of Sheffield but I will branch out to other parts of the country and the world. Painting full time would also be amazing. I’d also like to do another solo exhibition this summer.

Which other artists do your admire?

I hadn’t really been up on modern art – perhaps because I have only recently started painting. But since then, I am coming across lots of talented artists. Sheffield is blessed with some fantastic artists at the moment, many of whom I have exhibited with. In fact, Sheffield could do with a few more exhibition spaces in order to showcase its many artists. Being on Instagram you also stumble across some great artists from all over the world. What would be your dream project?

I’d love to take my new Berlin pieces out to Germany and exhibit there, once they are finished, as it is the home of Expressionism. I recently sold a painting to a German collector and feel like my

Are you originally from Sheffield?

No, I’m from London originally – the South East. Dulwich if I’m trying to impress; Tulse Hill if I’m being honest! If not, what brought you to the city?

I met my now wife in London and we decided to move to Sheffield where she is from. It was mainly a financial decision but I’d always liked Sheffield when I came up to visit. How does Sheffield compare to other cities you’ve lived in?

Sheffield is completely different to London. Much more relaxed. I enjoyed living in London and I recommend everyone try it for a while at least – but now I can enjoy it as a tourist when I go down to visit family and friends. It’s always nice to come back home to Sheffield though. Sheffield might not have the most iconic or recognisable buildings, but I see how important Sheffield architecture is – especially when I exhibit locally and listen to people fondly talk about my work and the places I paint. It has a very proud population. To find out more, visit www.bryanJohnartist.co.uk or you can follow Bryan on Facebook,Twitter and Instagram @bryanJohnartist.

Forty years of little miracles IVF has come a long way since Louise Brown was born in 1978. Phoebe Seymour finds out about the latest treatments that are helping couples conceive more easily.

FORTY years ago the first baby was conceived through In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) from the ground-breaking work of Patrick Steptoe and Robert Edwards. Louise Brown was born nine months later, on 25 July 1978, in Oldham General Hospital in Greater Manchester. This gave infertile couples hope, but the treatments were complex and still had low success rates. However, since then treatments have become much easier and less

Iconic site is set for £21million development. By Paul Stimpson.

SHEFFIELD’S famous Park Hill estate is set for a redevelopment that will see a national flagship arts venue built within the Grade-II listed building. The Park Hill Art Space will be designed by award-winning London-based studio Carmody Groarke after fighting off rival studios for the prestigious commission. The space will feature studios for artists, a purpose-built gallery, an auditorium, a workshop and an outdoor sculpture. It will also house local charity S1 Artspace. Artistic director at S1 Artspace, Louise Hutchinson, said: “We are delighted to be working with Carmody Groarke to transform our vision for Park Hill Art Space into a design that we hope will capture the imagination of audiences both locally and nationally. “The quality of the shortlisted proposals was extremely impressive, which reflects the enormous potential of this project and continued interest in Park Hill. We very much look forward to working with Carmody Groarke on this exciting project.” According to the Carmody Groarke website, the winning bid “follows the original architect’s vision of a topographical relationship of architecture to landscape. The brutalist concrete frame of the existing building will be paired back and carefully refurbished to enable the largest most flexible spaces for the production of art.” Development of the estate is ongoing with 200 homes and a £20million student accommodation pencilled in for future production. Regeneration company Urban Splash is currently overseeing the huge restoration project. Director of Carmody Groarke, Andy Groarke, said: “We are extremely proud to have been selected by S1 Artspace to work with them in developing their vision for an international public art venue and artists’ studios. “Making S1 Artspace an integral part of the future of Park Hill will be hugely important for the growth of the arts and the cultural economy of Sheffield, and will safeguard the listed buildings’ future with creative transformation.”

The Park Hill Art Space is scheduled for completion in 2022. For more information, head to www.carmodygroarke.com

We talk comebacks, solo records and Big Bald Graham’s 50th with Milburn frontman, Joe Carnall. By Ashley Birch.

WINTER 2017 / ISSUE 44

37 BACK in 2008 the popular Sheffield band, Milburn, were shining lights of the city’s early noughties indie scene, but after just two albums, and numerous tours they decided to set down their guitars for the final time. There was no falling out amongst the lads, or any real fanfare when they played their farewell gig on 24 May 2008 at the O2 Academy, the band just slipped away into other projects, and in some cases ‘real’ jobs. There was no indication that a comeback was on the cards. That is until last year. In April 2016 the band shocked fans by reforming for four shows, again at the Academy. Those initial shows evolved into a full UK and European tour, culminating in a massive sell out gig at Sheffield’s Don Valley Bowl in the summer. Due to popular demand the band began writing new music, and their self-released album, Time was released a couple of months ago. Today, lead singer and bass player Joe Carnall has taken time out from looking after his infant (brother and guitarist, Louis has been left holding the baby) to talk to CityMag about all things Milburn ahead of their ‘homecoming’ Christmas gig at Plug on 16 December. Hi Joe, so, let’s not beat around the bush, why come back?

A couple of things happened. Can you remember big bald Graham? Well, it was his 50th and he requested that we get back together and play a couple of songs and for some reason we all said yes! So we found ourselves in this practice room, stood there staring at each other. We went through a couple of tunes and it was quite funny. It was like, this is weird, because you kind of know what you’re doing but you don’t quite know how you’re doing it. I think we were all like, wow, could be all right this. It was accidental really, and then before you know it we’d booked a tour and festivals. That all culminated with the Don Valley gig in the summer. How was that?

Unbelievable. Like, really unbelievable. I’ve said if we split up tomorrow that would be fine because that what we did there in front of six or seven thousand people was just like, bloody hell, I didn’t think I’d ever get to do this. I think what we need to do now is disappear for a bit, because I think we’ve done a lot now, and I think people have had their fill. We need to leave people with the record and just get out of their face. That might be tricky with a tour coming up! How has touring changed over the years?

I suppose if you leave the house for five days and don’t see your kids, as fun as it is at first, after that third day, you’re like right, I wanna go home now. Or you’re sharing a Travelodge with another 30-year-old who stinks just as much as you do, or snores, when you’re used to sleeping next to your wife, in your nice house. I mean I still enjoy it, because I know exactly what it’s going to be like, so you get stuck in to it and have a drink, and have laugh, because if you go and try to read a book, write a novel, you’ve got no chance. At least this time we get to play songs off the new album rather than playing stuff that we wrote when we were 14 that we’re not interested in anymore. It’s about being proud of what you’re doing. The new album, Time has been described as Milburn but a bit more grown up, is that a fair reflection?

How embarrassing would it be if we tried to make that first record again. I’m 30 years old for gods sake! What a

pathetic thing that would be to do. I’m being serious, I’ve not heard one bad thing from fans, which is amazing, that’s why we made it. They wanted it. They paid for it. It’s their record. It’s called Time, what’s that about then?

It’s as literal as you want to make it. We had lots of different ideas for the title, as you do, and the first song on the record is called Time, so that’s where it came from. Pretty much all these songs are about how you feel now and how you felt then. Is it different? What’s the same? How people perceive you and how it’s only worked because of the passage of time. How it’s got itself back together. How it’s become something over time. It’s not the most complex title but it fits the bill. You haven’t shied away from voicing your political views. Do these songs have a political message?

It’s sort of off limits with Milburn, because I think the other lads wouldn’t want to be associated with it as much, although recently Louis and Greeny have become a lot more politically conscious. I just don’t think it’s necessarily what our fans would want to hear. If we started coming out with stuff like we’re The Young Ones, it wouldn’t feel right. It’s not what that band and that name’s about. So, what is Milburn about?

Good question. As much as it’s not me, there is an element of lad culture there. It feels a bit like a dirty word now. I don’t necessarily associate myself with it. I’d like to ask other people. Because I’d like to see more women at our gigs and I want them to be less intimidated. I hope they’re not, but I’m not naïve enough to think that 2,000 blokes in a room is not intimidating, of course it is, and I’m not naïve enough to think that all our fans are angels because it’s just a cross-section of society. But I’d like to hope that with our new record, and our second record, the evolution of the sound, with it being a little bit more intricate and a little bit more mature, it drew in a different sort of fan. How do you feel about being back in the middle of the Sheffield music scene? It’s weird because I don’t feel in the middle again, because of my age. I don’t think the epicentre of any scene should involve a bearded 30-year-old! People ask me a lot what’s the scene like in Sheffield, and I don’t know, because I’m not meant to. When you were 17, 18, 19 do you think you gave a shit what some 30-yearold bloke thought? Because they were old. What’s next for Milburn? UK tour, European tour and then festivals next year, and then beyond that I don’t think we know. We’ve gone a lot further than we thought was possible so no one is really planning much further. The aim was to get the record out and see what happens. Inevitably it will be sound with our fans and then it’ll fizzle out as we’ve experienced twice before. But, I also want to do a solo record next year. I always planned on doing one this year before Milburn got back together so that’s still there. It’s like 90 per cent done. Like, demo’d. I just need to get somewhere and record it, which I do have plans for. But I’m not going to tell you because if it doesn’t come off I’ll look like a dick, and it’ll be in print! Catch Milburn at Plug on 16 December www.the-plug.com Their album, Time, is out now. www.milburnmusic.co.uk

WHILE we do love the Steel City, sometimes we can’t help but cast an envious glance towards our northern neighbours, particularly at this time of year. While the first phase of the retail quarter is encouragingly taking shape, Leeds already has an abundance of high class shopping outlets to satisfy your Christmas gift cravings. There’s also some fantastic restaurants and bars, should you need a break from the packed streets, and some seriously classy hotels if you want to make a weekend of it. Of course we want you to spend your hard-earned cash right here, but for something different this festive season, why not take the 45-minute journey by car or train north. We won’t tell if you don’t.

SLIDE AWAY Whether you’re new to the city or have lived here your whole life, this new book will help you to discover some of Sheffield’s best-kept secrets. Words: Richard Abbey

DID you know that there are TWO helter-skelters of significance in Sheffield, and that if you look hard enough, you might discover the skeleton of a tiny pterodactyl, the best place to spot a UFO and a very interesting sculpture looking down on the Peace Gardens (the clue is in the name). All this and more is revealed in a brand new book from German publishers Emons. Written by Sheffieldborn Michael Glover, and beautifully photographed by Richard Anderson, 111 Places in Sheffield That You Shouldn’t Miss teases tempting reasons to take a stroll through the city. Some are pretty obvious – did you know Mary Queen of Scots was incarcerated at Manor Lodge for 14 years? Some are less so – did you know that the Lantern Theatre was possibly built by a wealthy cutlery magnate for his daughter who aspired to be an actress? I could go on. Now, I don’t profess to be an authority on all things Sheffield but I was born here, raised here and, despite brief stays in London, Los Angeles and Barnsley, it’s home. I’m honoured to be a Sheffielder and proud of all the great things that we do, but, reading this book, even I learned a thing or two. Take Ernest Wright & Sons for example, did you know that only five people make 15,000 pairs of scissors a year? Then there’s Henderson Relish; were you aware that it contains three secret ingredients which are known to only three people? You’ll also find out the true meaning of a ‘gennel’, why ‘spice’ has a different meaning in the city and where there’s a tree that’s older than the Magna Carta. The well-produced book is packed with information and forms part of a series from the publisher, which has also focused on

British cities such as York, Bath and Cambridge. It will appeal to visitors and long time residents alike. London-based author Michael Glover is a former Firth Park Grammar School pupil who counts poet, art critic, editor and publisher amongst his job descriptions. He has contributed regularly to The Times, the Financial Times, The Economist and the New Statesman. Sheffield-born photographer Richard Anderson is also a director, producer and musician who’s contributed to various media, including News International, BBC and Loaded magazine.
