Jewel in the crown AS THE REVAMPED WOOL MARKET PREPARES TO OPEN ITS DOORS, CHRIS WILSON LOOKS AT WHAT’S IN STORE.
he finishing touches were being made to the transformed Doncaster Wool Market just as this issue of Eastside went to press and it promises to revolutionise the concept of shopping and leisure in the town. It all started 15 months ago when a new design for the famous and historic Wool Market was unveiled as part of the plan to transform Doncaster Market. More than £3million of Sheffield City Region SCRIF funding was secured to revamp the jewel in the crown of the town centre: the award-winning market place. The aim is to transform the market area into a vibrant and bustling location all week long, and into the evenings. As part of the plans, the renovated Wool Market will become an attractive and welcoming destination, providing a new and enhanced offer to retail traders and customers. The makeover will also enable the market to host more events, encouraging more people to visit the area.

The new designs retain the heritage of the Wool Market, but are a complete transformation from what was previously in the market place. Some of the new food venues include: The Rustic Pizza Co., Scrapes (rolled ice-cream), Clucking Oinks (fried chicken), Taste Peru, Indian Food Hawker and LollieJade’s Cupcake Emporium Shopping outlets include Reckage (furniture and home accessories), Direct Brick (brick feature walls) and The Shoe Room (additional to their shop on Priory Walk). Mayor Ros Jones said: “The revamped Wool Market is the first regeneration scheme to be completed since I launched our comprehensive Urban Centre Masterplan. This project and the many others underway, and in the pipeline, are designed to create a thriving town centre. “Our historic Wool Market has received a complete makeover. With its mix of new stalls for retail, eating and
drinking, it will be an attractive destination for traders and customers. It will enable Doncaster Markets to host more events and with extended opening hours into the evening all week long, it will encourage more people into the markets area. “I am sure local people and visitors are going to love the new vibe and I would urge people to come along for opening weekend celebrations to experience it first-hand. It’s going to be a great occasion.” Dan Jarvis, Mayor of the Sheffield City Region, said: “It’s great to see how Local Growth Funding, which has been used to transform the Wool Market and also contributed to projects such as the Civic and Cultural Quarter, the Great Yorkshire Way and the expansion of the Yorkshire Wildlife Park, is continuing to drive real change for our communities. “The new Wool Market is a central part of the council’s ambitious plan to transform the town centre. businesses and market traders across the country, but the new Wool Market is creating a real attraction for residents and visitors alike.” The Wool Market refurbishment is part of the £6.8million first phase of the Enterprise Marketplace scheme, which has benefited from £3.2million of Local Growth Fund (LGF) funding from the Sheffield City Region. The scheme was project managed by Doncaster Council, the main contractor was Willmott Dixon and the architect was Bond Bryan Architects. By 2021 Government will have invested over £12billion through the Local Growth Fund, allowing LEPs to use their local knowledge to get all areas of the country firing on all cylinders. The bumper weekend kicks off on Friday 29 March with a packed programme of entertainment. During the day, there will be live music courtesy of Natalie Black and Paula Swann-Sully, dance performances, street theatre and entertainers. An Enigma pop-up escape room, Flip Out trampolines and a traditional big ferris wheel will be available across the weekend. The fun continues into the evening with BBC’s Christian Carlisle launching the first Friday Night Live at the Wool Market from 5-8.30pm. This late afternoon, early evening event will promote the thriving live music and entertainment scene on Friday nights through to September. As well as Christian’s DJ set when Creative Dance performs a street dance routine, there will be live performances from the much loved singer/songwriter James Taplin and the band WTF Audio –
the creation of Doncaster songwriter Chris Perkins. Friday will really appeal to young adults. Saturday (30 March) will have a real community feel with the loads of superb acts and activities from 10.30am to 8.30pm.There will be more street performers and entertainers, a unique Earthbound Misfits Circus Workshop in the morning and afternoon and a hilarious Le Chefs show at 12.30pm. Culture will come to the fore with the live music from 11am. Visitors can enjoy Paula Swann-Sully, Bombay Baja, Europe’s leading Indian brass band, the Doncaster Ukulele Group and Salsa in the Square will really get people in the party spirit. The live music acts continue in the evening when a number of talented local singers, singer/songwriters and musicians take to the stage. Harriet Rose Grant, Emily Harris, Lewis Canner and Toby Burras will all wow the crowds. Sunday (31 March) is Mother’s Day and to celebrate bring your mum, stepmum, nan or grandma down to the special Mad Hatters Tea Party, complete with Mad Hatter characters. It will have a more chilled atmosphere but again people can enjoy loads of animation and artists and there’s live music from 11am to 4pm. I could be lying.” Written by young local man Will Tollerfield and directed by Simon Carr, Dangerously Dark & Somewhat Spectacular is to be entered into the new writing category of the festival, where many authors, agents and writers look for new young talent. The Edinburgh Fringe Festival provides budding writers the opportunity to gain experience and develop their

skills as professional writers, and provides them with real insight as to writing plays as a career. Doncaster Little Theatre will be auditioning for the play’s six roles at the end of April, and they intend to stage two performances at the theatre itself before leaving for the Fringe, so that local audiences are able to see the wonderful piece of work they’ve created. done some extensive research, trying chocs of all shapes and sizes from some of the best chocolatiers around so that you don’t have to – you’re welcome. So, read on to find out what we deemed the most eggcellent chocs for Easter 2019.
BEST FOR SHARING Cadbury Dairy Milk Crunchie Ultimate Easter Egg, 570g, £12 You’ll struggle to find a person who doesn’t know and love Cadbury chocolate. While there are plenty of Cadbury eggs on the shelves to choose from this Easter, it’s their Crunchie Ultimate Easter Egg that got us at RMC excited. Thin and easily fractured outer-shells are now seemingly a thing of the past, as 2019 sees Cadbury introduce a thick chocolate Dairy Milk egg containing hidden Crunchie pieces within it. The large box also contains three full-size Crunchie bars, making it almost impossible for this Easter goodie to be polished off single-handedly.
BEST NUTTY EGG Bettys Hazelnut & Almond Milk Chocolate Egg, 85g, £6.50 At first glance, you wouldn’t believe this egg was one of the more affordable of the bunch. A nutty, crunchy, chocolatey delight, this irresistible pairing of roasted almonds and hazelnuts was almost too pretty to crack open. The egg’s luxurious look came from its bronze shimmer finish, while the roasted almonds and hazelnuts embedded within the rich Swiss Grand Cru milk chocolate gave it a unique, exciting texture. 58 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

Booja Booja Fine de Champagne Easter Egg, 35g, £9.99 Not only were we impressed by the gorgeously painted, egg-shaped wooden box this egg came presented in, we also couldn’t believe how deliciously silky the truffles encased inside it were – especially considering they’re organic and dairy, gluten and soya free. Strong in flavour, these are a great choice for those who love a boozy choc but have allergies to be mindful of.
Enveloped within this prosecco-flavoured chocolate egg are fixing popping candy and strong proseccofilled truffles, so it’s not one for the teetotallers. Prestat was founded in 1902 by the Dufour family, creators of the chocolate truffle, and was adored by Roald Dahl, author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It even has the “By appointment to Her Majesty the Queen” seal of approval. If it’s good enough for them, it’s certainly good enough for us.

Not just any old pink egg, Nestle’s newest addition is made using newly discovered Ruby cocoa beans, giving the chocolate a surprisingly fresh berry fruitiness. Great if like us, you’re bored of the same old run-of-themill milk chocolate you see hitting the shelves year after year.
OUR WINNER Hotel Chocolat Hard-Boiled Easter Egg – Mint Chocolate, 220g, £15 When tasked with trying what seems like an endless amount of chocolate, you could easily assume that the first you try would be the first you forget. In this case, that couldn’t be farther from the truth. Somewhat sceptical of how flavourful a vegan Easter egg could be, we were all impressed by Hotel Chocolat’s 70 per cent dark chocolate egg. Infused with Tasmanian peppermint oil, the egg also contained crispy mint shards which added some welcome texture to the smooth chocolate egg. While dark chocolate can often divide opinion, there wasn’t a single person in the office who didn’t go back for more of this surprisingly sweet and subtly flavoured Easter treat. GAINSBOROUGH FARMERS’ MARKET TO RE-LAUNCH IN NEW LOCATION. ainsborough’s popular monthly Farmers’ and Craft Market is being re-launched this spring – with a brand new location and a great line up of local traders. The market will have a fresh new look and brand as well as a new location on Market Street in Gainsborough where it will be held on the second Saturday of every month. The first market in the new location will be on Saturday 13 April. The Gainsborough Farmers’ Market has been located at Marshall’s Yard since 2008 with a strong line up of local producers. Now the Marshall’s Yard team are working with the West Lindsey District Council on the relocation of the new market and will continue to manage the monthly event, which they’re confident will continue to grow in its new Market Street location. Long-standing traders including Pickles Preserves and the award-winning Redhill Farm have welcomed the move to Market Street. The Crown Hotel menus have had a mini makeover... The Bawtry hotel is also a popular place to head to for a bite to eat. Whatever time of day you find yourself feeling a bit peckish, you’re sure to find something that tickles your fancy on one of their many menus. The Crown Hotel’s restaurant menus recently had a mini makeover, but don’t worry, their sweet chilli chicken and the Sheffield’s own Henderson’s Relish beef pie haven’t gone anywhere, they’ve kept the old favourites and added in a bunch of tempting new treats. Crown chefs have cooked up new starters to add to their already enticing a la carte menu, including chicken tikka skewers, a woodland mushroom pot and warm goat’s cheese bon bons. The new mains are just as appealing, with their tandoori chicken breast already

drumming up excitement amongst diners. The a la carte menu also sees new life breathed into the restaurant’s three sharing platters. All different but equally delectable, their Yorkshire, surf and turf and vegetarian platters are perfect for those who can’t make up their minds, or those who can never seem to keep their hands off the plate of their dining companion. There’s plenty of sharing to be had when it comes to dessert too. Veggie friendly, the Crown sharer is priced at only £12.95, and those of us with a sweet tooth will find it hard to resist the temptation of the warm chocolate brownie, warm French apple cake, salted caramel cheesecake with salted caramel popcorn, Eton mess shots and chocolate marshmallow ice cream. Oh, and it comes with a jug of custard on the side too. If sweets aren’t your thing (which, with that selection, you might just want to give them another try), then fear not,
as The Crown Hotel have brought back their popular after dinner cheese board, which features a selection of cheese, biscuits, celery, grapes and chutney. The Crown’s a la carte menu is served daily, but if you find yourself heading to the hotel’s 12th century market town location on a Sunday, then you’ll want to make sure you’ve called ahead to book yourself in for a taste of their stunning set menu. Where else can you find five delicious courses for just £24.95? Every menu at The Crown Hotel caters for those of us who can’t quite decide what we’re in the mood for. Their trio of roasts lets us try a bit of everything, plus a little extra of the things we know we definitely want with our roasties. Beef, pork and turkey come served with two Yorkshire puddings and two bacon chipolatas for just a £5 supplement, and of course you’ll get all the usual bits and bobs you’d expect

with your Sunday lunch. And don’t worry if you’re not a fan of the traditional Sunday dinner, as The Crown have thought of you too, making sure their a la carte menu is also available. It seems that The Crown Hotel really do have a dish or a menu for everything and everyone. Their vegetarian and vegan menu features popular dishes such as the roasted vegetable parcel and chilli ‘non’ carne, while their brunch menu allows you to choose from 12 different dishes and have as much tea, coffee or toast as you please, all while sipping on a mimosa or a glass of fresh fruit juice. Just as they’ve sorted out those of us who can’t make up our minds when it comes to ordering, they’ve figured out a way to stop us fighting over the bill at the end of the meal too. The restaurant party menu saves any fussing over the bill when dining out with a group of friends or family. At £40 per person, the set menu gives everyone the freedom to choose their own three dishes, and includes half a bottle of wine each as well as tea, coffee and mints to wash down your delicious dessert. In the bar you can try a variety of gins and cocktails and there is live music every Friday and Saturday evening. It’s clear that whatever you fancy, however big or small your appetite, you’ll find something to enjoy at The Crown Hotel.

This Is Me charity ball Designer fashion boutique Robinsons of Bawtry were delighted to be invited to put on a fashion show at the amazing ‘This is Me’ Charity Ball organised by Gill Lunness at the Mount Pleasant Hotel. The fashion show featured brands including Balmain, Michael Kors, Armani, Ralph Lauren plus new junior collections by Hackett, Ralph Lauren, Hugo Boss and True Religon of which are now available in store. Models also showcased a selection of fabulous hats by George Durdy. Huge thanks go to all the models who were all Robinsons staff, friends and family, including the young models who were born to walk the runway, plus Nigel Oxby from Elite who styled the models’ hair and Jennifer Law for her amazing makeup skills. The event raised over £8,000 to help towards the refurbishment of the sensory room at Aegir Specialist School in Gainsborough. Congratulations to Gill for hosting such a wonderful event and raising so much money for a fabulous cause.

Bawtry is a small market town, the historic centre of which is dominated by a rather ‘ugly’ car parking arrangement that, necessarily, has to serve as a shared vehicular/pedestrian space. The car park is essential for the town’s viability, as no suitable alternative provision can be found, but its presence detracts from the attractiveness of the central conservation area. The Town Council is proposing to carry out improvement works to the central Market Hill area but the lack of alternative parking, together with financial constraints, limit what is achievable at this time. A scheme is currently being prepared to reconstruct the Market Place footpath (using conservation type materials) and, as a minimum, to resurface the general Market Hill area. The new scheme will keep the loss of any car parking provision to a minimum. This essential work is estimated to cost £150k and is intended to be funded from capital reserves. However, there is an aspiration to also include as many “enhancement” type aspects as possible if funding for these additional works can be found. The ‘wish list’ of additional works is estimated to be £75k. Any pledges for financial contribution to help achieve these aspirations would be welcomed. Pledges can be made against specific items if preferred and could be in the form of sponsorship for items such as seating, planters or the covered cycle parking shelter etc. The aim is for the Market Hill scheme to be completed by mid 2021, but the works may be phased in order to spread the financial requirements and minimise disruption in the town centre. Bawtry Soapbox Charity Cup Bawtry will be hosting its first ever charity soapbox race on Sunday 30 June; not only will it be a special day for the chosen charities, but also for the teams, spectators and sponsors alike. Historically and even today a wood crate soapbox is used as a raised platform to stand on to make a point or speech, usually of a political nature. In more recent years Red Bull, a sports drink manufacturer and Formula One race sponsor, has created a new use for this basic item. It is now used as the central point when building a wheeled cart to carry one or two drivers around a set track. The result? Well, with the addition of the entry teams being ‘themed’ and donning fancy dress the races have become simply hilarious with carnage and chaos ensuing. Carts (now taking on the name ‘soapbox’) careering around bends, over hazards and through chicanes. The events attract all ages and all sexes and have proven to be a fantastic family fun days out. This year’s selected charities are Brake and the Alzheimer’s Society. Sponsorship packages range from £25 to £750.
Bawtry Easter Fayre Bawtry’s Big Easter Hunt and Fayre will be held on Saturday 6 April at the Bawtry MSG – gates open at 12.30pm; don’t miss the prizes and competitions for the best dressed hunter, decorate and egg and the big raffle draw. There will be entertainment for all the family, including South Yorkshire Fire Service Display, hunt for all ages, fun easter races, bungee trampolines, giant zorbs, unicorn rides, bouncy castle and soft play zone, giant crazy golf, face painting/glitter tattoos, hair braiding, arts and crafts and fantastic stalls. Performances by The Dance Space and Acmac Martial Arts will take place throughout the day, plus come and meet the GP Princesses, Spider-Man, Sofia the First, Catboy and Peter the Rabbit. In addition, you’ll find food and refreshments from Bubble Wafflers, Pizza Truck, outside grill/BBQ, ice cream and snowy slushies and a fully licensed bar. Tickets are £4 per child and include all the chocolate your little hunter can find and entry into the big raffle.
