ello and welcome to the April issue of Eastside. This month we’re looking at all things home related, from calming pastel colours for your interior to building in your garden. Home offices have become more of a necessity rather than an indulgence but if you really want to make a statement we have some garden buildings that are not only practical but stylish too. Our cover star is Jason Adlam, a quantity surveyor who decided to try his hand at making his own spirits – and he’s done rather well at it too. Read more about his story in our ‘Made in Doncaster’ feature on page 12. Elsewhere we’ve got your usual mix of motoring, beauty, accessories and more.

degree in quantity surveying is perhaps not the qualification you’d expect to need when it comes to starting your own artisan gin brand. But that hasn’t stopped Jason Adlam who, despite running his own construction company for the last 15 years, decided to do just that. “It started over a pint with one of my directors one Christmas after what was an extremely busy six months in construction,” he explained. “Exhausted, we decided we needed a new challenge and with our ever-growing love for spirits we devised the business plan and started to look for premises.Within a few months we had organised everything we needed and started to create the flavours. “Our love for gin and spirits as

consumers led us to believe that if we could deliver a simple quality flavour we could show people how gin should taste.” Jason was a complete novice when it came to spirit distilling although his partner Gary had a great deal of experience in beer production and so went on several distilling courses in Scotland to become a gin and spirit distiller and broaden his experience. Get the right premises was key and Jason initially had his sights set on the Yorkshire Dales, as that’s where Gary lives, but they quickly outgrew the premises in the first two years. That brought a move to a brand new purpose-built 2,000 square feet space in Doncaster where they currently operate from. “From that point it’s all about the alcohol,” continued Jason. “Sourcing the best ethanol, making sure you have the best water and scouring Yorkshire for the best and most authentic botanicals. “Our largest investment was the copper still which took months to arrive. Whilst the still was being manufactured, we had time to look for bottles and design and source labels, everything down to the authentic cork stoppers and wax, that we hand seal to this day. Each label has a photograph depicting a Yorkshire scene on the inside and took hours to perfect.” With everything in place, under the banner J P Adlam Jason and Gary set out to create their gin and it took several months of trial and error until, after the eighth attempt, they created their London Dry Gin from which all of their fruit flavours are also made. Confident they had a ‘winner’ on their hands, they entered their first batch into the World SIP Awards in 2019 from the USA, the only internationally recognised consumer judging spirits competition, and walked away with a gold award. On the back of this they were approached by the BBC to take part in a documentary focused on their success. “They followed us for a few weeks and focused on our ‘sales pitch’ for a large order,” said Jason. “They spent a good time at the distillery and showed the viewers how the gin was made, it was all very exciting.” From that point, J P Adlam now produces around 3,000 bottles a year in small batch hand made numbers. The limited quantities allow them to maintain the high quality standards and consistency that they strive for. Joining

the London Dry Gin are three additional flavours of gin as well as rum (one called Athame and one called JP Adlam Rum) and a vodka which are all again limited hand made numbers. The plan is to increase production further. “The perfect volumes would be 5,000 bottles a year,” added Jason. “We are also looking to take on more staff in the distillery in 2021 to help bottle, label, wax seal and pack and an apprentice for distilling.” Further plans for this year include a new flavour (“something for summer that has never been tried before”), expanding the rum brand and, restrictions permitting, offering distillery days and company experience days. Like the majority of businesses J P Adlam was affected by the pandemic and it couldn’t have come at a worse time. “During lockdown 1.0 in March/April 2020 made it impossible to move the distillery to our newly purchased premises,” explained Jason. “Instead, we started to produce hand sanitiser in large numbers to help with the local area, especially for our own construction company and many of our suppliers and

Europe, including Italy, Switzerland, Austria, and Germany. We managed 1,000 bottles in November and December which for us was hectic.” Jason favours small independent quality establishments to showcase their brand and also sells directly to high-end restaurants and bars (mainly in Yorkshire). Locally you’ll find their bottles at Masters of Malt, Wright Wine Company, The Blind Librarian Bar (Bawtry) and The Tasting Note (Bawtry). And of course you can purchase bottles online at jpadlamgin.co.uk With a successful construction company and now a booming spirits business, there’s lots to raise a glass to. Which just leaves us one last question, what’s your favourite drink Jason? “Obviously a gin and tonic is the staple but to expand further I love a rum and Coke and also a Negroni when the summer comes. Aperol Spritz is also great for those sunny days.”

Fresh new look PLASMABLAST SKIN TIGHTENING IS A 100 PER CENT NATURAL NONSURGICAL AESTHETIC TREATMENT DESIGNED TO IMPROVE SKIN TONE AND TEXTURE. et’s be honest, everyday life can be tough on the skin, making people look older than they really are. But while we can’t prevent the inevitability of ageing, we can treat and slow the process to some extent. Skin ageing is expressed in a number of main ways, each of which affects the appearance of the face differently. Wrinkles are often the first visible signs of changes. The skin structure changes over time and creates a loss of volume which in turn leads facial skin to fall in areas where the skin is saggy. Density loss is often accompanied by a lifeless appearance of the skin that becomes thinner. Clare Carroll has recently joined the team at Haus of XS in Chapel Allerton and specialises in Plasmablast Skin Tightening treatments. Plasmablast is a 100 per cent natural non-surgical aesthetic treatment designed to improve skin tone and texture, giving it a brighter, more contoured and more youthful appearance. The treatment works by tightening sagging skin and reducing the appearance of loose skin around the jaw. Fine lines and deeper wrinkles are reduced. Plasmablast allows Clare to remove excess skin in a non-surgical, minimally invasive manor.

Over the last few years, Clare has refined her approach to treating clients that want to look younger without the obvious, frozen, stretched or exaggerated outcomes often seen in the media. The majority of clients that undergo Clare’s signature Plasmablast facelift report that they look and feel refreshed and more importantly they can finally reflect their true personality through their face. Clare’s approach focuses on the following key areas: • Tired and dark eyes • Cheek enhancement • Jawline improvement • Mouth and lips rejuvenation • Nose • Skin texture improvement • Lines and wrinkle reduction The treatment works by using a specialised device is used to deliver nitrogen-based pulses of plasma which charges the air just above the skin. This process damages existing skin cells and causes them to contract, meaning the skins natural healing process goes into overdrive, thus encouraging fresh new

cells to be produced. These include collagen and elastin, which we all know is perfect in minimising the appearance of wrinkles. Plasma Blast can last from ten minutes to two hours depending on the size of the area and condition being treated. To begin with, local anaesthetic cream is applied to numb the skin. The handpiece is then held close to the skin, and lots of zaps are delivered all over the treatment area. You may feel some heat and tiny amount of discomfort, but not for long. After treatment, your skin may

be slightly swollen and sensitive. You will also develop small dry spots that will crust over and flake off within a week. These can be easily covered with makeup. You will be able to see results immediately after treatment. The results will continue to improve as the skin cells regenerate in the following weeks. Dependent on your age and area being treated, you’ll need between 1-3 treatments with minimum six-week break between them. Side effects are extremely minimal with Plasmablast but can include skin discolouration, shedding, flaking, scaling, crusting and peeling. These side effects would typically resolve within 7-10 days. Clare will be giving free consultations, a skin analysis, assessing the shape of your face and what she can do for you at Haus of XS on Wednesdays. Hurry and book your consultation as there is only a limited number available. Call Clare on 07976 971501.Clare also visits salons in Bingley, Brighouse,York and Selby. Orthopaedic Surgery & Sports Injury Specialists How do you treat Hip Arthritis? All patients should attempt non-surgical treatments initially; medications, physiotherapy, weight loss (if applicable), and activity modification. Injections into the hip of steroid are performed using X-ray guidance under local anaesthetic. Whilst useful as a short-term option for pain control, they seldom provide long-term benefit. Surgical: Patients who still have significant pain, (e.g., pain that inhibits daily activities or keeps them awake at night), would be recommended for hip replacement surgery.

Coriel Hip and Knee Surgeons, Mr Andrew Bruce and Mr Shankar Thiagarajah specialise exclusively in the management of hip and knee conditions. Both are fellowship-trained having undertaken thousands of operations in their field. Alongside their NHS practice at Doncaster & Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals, they are able to see patients privately at Park Hill Hospital (Doncaster), Kinvara Private Hospital (Rotherham), and the Briar’s Consulting Rooms (Doncaster).

What is Hip Arthritis? Hip Arthritis is a condition in which the cartilage of the hip joint wears away with time. The hip joint consists of a ball (femoral head) and socket (acetabulum). When cartilage wears away, the bone rubs against bone, which can be extremely painful. What are the Symptoms of Hip Arthritis? Hip arthritis presents with groin pain 90% of the time. Pain may also be isolated to the side of the hip, buttock or knee. Arthritis of the hip is progressive, although the rate of progression is variable. How is Hip Arthritis Diagnosed? Hip arthritis is diagnosed by clinical examination, and x-ray findings showing narrowing of the hip joint space. Where doubt exists, a “diagnostic” injection of local anaesthetic may be performed. If this alleviates the pain, it is highly likely that the hip is the cause of the symptoms.

TD, FRCS (Eng), FRCS (Orth), MBChB, VR

What does Hip Replacement Surgery involve? Hip replacement surgery involves removing parts of the hip joint that are problematic – the ball and socket – and replacing them with new parts made from metal, plastic or ceramic. Surgery on average takes 1-2 hours, and is performed under a spinal or general anaesthetic. Following surgery, patients are encouraged to mobilise. Typical length of hospital stay after surgery is 1-2 nights, with some patients able to go home on the day of surgery. Patient satisfaction rates following surgery are 95% and greater, with hip replacement surgery considered one of the most successful surgical procedures around. How long does it take to recover from surgery? Because Coriel hip surgeons employ “Enhanced Recovery Techniques”, your recovery is rapid and smooth. Our patients are walking unaided (without crutches/sticks) and driving by around 46 weeks after surgery. The majority return to work within 3 months. What is Daycase Hip & Knee Replacement Surgery? Some patients may be suitable to undergo “Daycase” surgery. This means you will be discharged from hospital the same day as your operation. • Using advanced surgical and anaesthetic techniques. your pain is minimized and you are able to mobilise early. • Numerous studies support the safety of sameday hip and knee replacement resulting in high levels of patient function and satisfaction. • Lower rates of complications including blood clots (because of early mobilization) • You will be able to recuperate in the comfort of your own home. What is the Minimally Invasive Direct Anterior approach (DAA) Hip Replacement? This involves a 3 to 4 inch incision on the front of the hip that allows the joint to be replaced by moving muscles aside, without cutting or detaching any tendons. Traditional surgery involves an incision to the side of the hip.

024 - 025 ESide Apr21_Layout 1 19/03/2021 11:16 Page 2

Potential advantages include: • a more rapid recovery, particularly in the first 3 months following surgery - important for young patients who would like an early return to work or sport. • less pain in the post-operative period – more likelihood that you will be discharged within 24 hours of your surgery. • a more stable artificial hip without the need for hip precautions. DAA hip replacement is an option for most patients. Patients may not be suitable, if they have abnormal anatomy or in cases of obesity (i.e. body mass index greater than 35). What is Robotic-assisted Hip & Knee Replacement Surgery? Do Coriel Surgeons offer this? Robotic systems exist for hip and knee replacement surgery. Robotic technology allows the surgeon to perform the joint replacement with pinpoint accuracy. The surgeon uses the technology as an extension of themselves, guiding surgical tools to the correct position. The robotic assisted technology does not perform the surgery on its own. And yes, Coriel surgeons are able to provide this option for suitable patients!

What is Trochanteric Pain Syndrome (TPS)? TPS is a condition where the bursa over the outside of your hip becomes inflamed and painful. Causes of TPS include overuse injuries, especially walkers, runners and cyclists. Additionally TPS can occur after previous hip surgery. What unique treatments can Coriel surgeons provide for TPS? Coriel surgeons provide the option of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections. PRP has been shown to be more effective in managing TPS than steroid injections. What are the causes of hip pain in younger individuals? Hip pain in the younger adult may be due to issues within the hip joint or the structures surrounding it (such as muscle/tendon injuries). Common problems within the hip joint include impingement, labral tears, and dysplasia.

What is Hip Impingement? Hip impingement, or femoroacetabular impingement (FAI), is a condition where the bones in the hip joint are abnormally shaped. Usually, either the hip socket has too much bone along the rim of the socket. Or, the femoral head isn’t sufficiently rounded. This abnormal hip shape is often something an individual is born with but certain activities such as gymnastics and football can often exacerbate the condition. GARDENING

A garden building can have multiple uses

ur gardens have become oases of calm over the last 12 months, particularly during those balmy summer months when we were grateful for being able to spend the time outdoors and escape the realities of the ongoing pandemic. Now spring is in the air and there’s hope for an end to all restrictions - thoughts are already turning to our outdoor spaces and how we can make best use of them over the coming months. Last year may have laid the foundations for what you would like to do with your garden but now’s the time to put those plans into action. Whether you want a better space for entertaining, room for the kids, a gym or a dedicated garden office, there are a host of ways to make your dreams a reality. Garden buildings rarely need planning permission (although there are exceptions which we have outlined later in this article) and can be fitted with water, electrics, heating and – most importantly – wifi, making them a real home from home. With many people working from home over the last year, a garden office has become a viable and practical alternative to using a cramped corner in the kitchen, giving you peace, quiet and great views over your outdoor space. Garden buildings aren’t limited to offices though and can be used for all manner of things including a gym, a playroom, cinema room or a bar/entertaining space - the only limit is your imagination. Perhaps not quite as grand but equally effective at enhancing your outdoor space is adding something like an outdoor kitchen, bar or pizza oven which, when combined with a decked or paved area and comfortable seating, can create a truly impressive space to entertain your guests – which will become a reality when restrictions hopefully lift on 21 June. However big or small your ambitions, over the next few pages we look at garden buildings and additions and how they can improve your outdoor space and speak to some local companies who are in a prime position to help your achieve your garden goals.

O

PLANNING: hat you’re wanting to build in your garden is a key aspect in determining whether or not you’ll need planning permission. However, the size of whatever you’re planning to build will have the biggest impact. According to the UK government, a building or enclosure that is being built within the boundaries of a house that is ‘incidental to the enjoyment of the dwellinghouse’ is designated as a Class E building. A Class E building does not require planning permission if it, and other existing buildings, do not cover more than 50 per cent of the total area of the house. They also cannot be built in front of the principal elevation of the house — so no building out on your front garden! You’ll need planning permission if: • Your garden building is going to be more than one storey or have eaves higher than 2.5 metres. • The overall height is going to be more than 4 metres for a dualpitched roof. • The overall height is going to be more than 3 metres for other roof types. • The overall height is going to be more than 2.5 metres if the building is within 2 metres of the boundary of the curtilage (borders or fences) of your home. • The building will take up more than 50 per cent of all land outside the house. This includes your current garden buildings — if your shed takes up 20 per cent of the land outside your house and you want to build a log cabin that will take up 35 per

W

cent of the land, you’d need planning permission as combined, they take up 55 per cent of the land. • You want a veranda, balcony, or raised platform as part of the building. • If your residence is a listed building, you’ll need planning permission regardless. If you’re building a shed or summer house that doesn’t extend further than the dimensions above, you should be good to go without planning permission in terms of dimensions and space requirements and regulations. The vast majority of log cabins, garden sheds, and summer houses will class as Class E buildings and not need planning permission in this case. If you’re planning to make your outdoor building a place to work from or simply socialise in, you won’t usually need planning permission (unless the dimensions extend as above). However, the use of your garden building can impact the need for planning permission. You’ll need planning permission if: • You’re planning to use your outdoor building for sleeping accommodation — such as a summerhouse in the garden for adult children or elderly relatives to live in to retain their privacy while living at home. • The building could, in any way, impact your neighbours’ right to privacy. Think tree houses — your kids will love them, but your neighbour might not be best pleased.

GARDEN OFFICE he desire for a dedicated space to work comfortably and quietly at home has probably increased tenfold over the last 12 months. While our homes often meet all our needs for family life, not everyone has the space for a dedicated work area. Too often, home workers have found themselves in cramped corners of the home trying to juggle office responsibilities, phone calls and Zoom meetings, all to the background of homeschooling, housework and the distraction of Home Under the Hammer. Building a fully-equipped garden office can give you everything you crave and more, as well as adding value to your home. And it’s easier than you think.

T

The ‘Toby’ is an instant workspace that comes fully fitted and equipped

Case Study 1: Dore Garden Offices Former sculptor Adam Reynolds launched Dore Garden Offices in 2011 with a focus on creating beautiful spaces to complement any garden. Their bespoke rooms are built off-site and once will installed will leave you with a high spec, fully insulated and plastered space, ready for you to move in to. The company are launching an ‘off the peg’ building called the ‘Toby’, which comes in three sizes and can be installed in seven days. These instant workspaces, with prices starting from £6,900, come fully plastered with internal light and sockets as standard and includes electrical connection to your house. Do you think there’s been an increase in demand for garden buildings over the last 12 months? As you can imagine the demand for garden offices and rooms in general has grown incredibly since the first lockdown. Our enquiries have gone from two a week to two a day and are already booking into Autumn 2021. Currently we have so many calls from people desperate to move their work place from the kitchen table or bedroom to a purpose-built space! How easy is it to put a building in your garden? It could not be simpler - we deal with all the groundworks (or can organise it) and

don’t need a concrete base or patio to install on to. We sort the electrical and internet connection and they are left ready to move in to. Is it just offices or do your rooms have other functions? The list of garden room uses really is endless. We have built yoga studios, TV rooms, teenage dens, libraries, offices, Split use rooms with storage areas, gyms, workshops, paint studios, have built a room for a taxidermist, a model train set and a miniature railway station. What have you been working on recently? Our teams have already installed half a dozen rooms this year – a gym, an office with a bathroom, a huge furniture workshop, a dedicated garden room and a couple of our Toby offices. What’s been your favourite project? We built an off grid room on an allotment for Sage, a Sheffield charity who promote the mental and physical well-being of adults in our community. Their existing meeting room was a leaking shed and it felt fantastic to provide them with an up-grade. To find our more, call Adam on 0114 4000 108 or visit www.doregardenoffices.co.uk

OUTDOOR ENTERTAINING nviting family and friends around for a barbecue or for a few drinks has seemed like a pipe dream for so long but is now close to becoming a reality. But does your outdoor space give you what you need? You could need better or more seating, an outdoor cooking area to include a barbecue or pizza oven, or a dedicated bar area, which would really impress your guests.

A South African ‘Braai’

Case Study 2: oakwood garden rooms akwood Garden Rooms provide a bespoke solution to your garden room needs. All garden rooms are individually designed and built around a client's exact needs by a team of qualified craftsmen. They don't build from kits or factory-made panels, which allows them to provide a high-end product of any size or shape, all to building industry standards. We spoke to managing director William Griffin.

How much does a garden building cost? Garden rooms built to a high standard generally start at around £12K for a 3m x 3m and can exceed £60K depending on size and final specification.

Where's the best place to start? The best place to start is to decide what you will be using the room for. Once this is determined you can then decide on what size will work best for you. After that its simply down to design and location in your garden.

To find out more, call William on 07715 418894 or visit www.oakwoodgardenrooms.com.

O

How easy is it to put a building in your garden? Having a room in your garden couldn’t be easier. Permitted development rules allow most builds to be constructed without the need to inform the council. And these can be built in under two weeks Is it just offices or do your rooms have other functions? Garden rooms are very versatile and can be used for any function at all. From a home gym, bar, studio, home cinema room, kids room, hair salon, beauty salon, child minding room the list is endless. 40 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

What's been your favorite project? I’ve been asked this many time, the answer is difficult as I love them all. But I do prefer the big ones as when they are built they are such a statement.

Case Study 3: kelham island concrete Our gardens and outdoor spaces can be a great place to entertain. From permanent seating and eating areas to outdoor bars, gardens and outdoor spaces have become an extension to our homes, more an extra room rather than something completely separate. If you’re thinking of making some improvements to your outdoor space in 2021, Kelham Island Concrete are perfectly placed to make your dreams a reality. Concrete is not only cool and cutting edge, it is an ideal all-weather material. Oliver Miller is the man behind Kelham Island Concrete, a Sheffield company leading the way in giving a new, high-end appeal to a material that was previously regarded as strictly functional. The company can supply and install barbecues, benches and seating areas, islands and worktops, dining tables and work with The Braai Man to fit South African-style cooking areas. “Once we had discovered what you can do with concrete inside homes, we started to realise the potential that concrete has outdoors too,” said Oliver. “It is really hard-wearing and weather proof, which makes it the perfect material to use outside. “With the global pandemic encouraging more outdoor entertaining, we have seen that customers are now starting to think about how to create an outdoor space that allows for socially distanced entertainment. We are open to any new and bespoke ideas to make your concrete outdoor space come alive.”

Off the Peg: If the thought of laying foundations and bricks is too much, there are many ready made alternatives. These cost-effective solutions are a step up from a shed and can offer many comforts that can meet your needs in a myriad of ways. From summer houses and cosy log cabins to luxury pods and playhouses, there's something for the whole family. In many cases, these can be assembled yourself with minimum of fuss although many companies offer installation as part of the price.

AWARD WINNING RESTAURANT Winners of the 2019 Eastside Restaurant Awards

“I’m Chintana, most people know me as Ton. I grew up in a village not far from the city of Ratchuburi in Thailand. I started cooking at a young age and used to cook for all my family. Mai Dang was my first restaurant I opened when I was 18 years old. Six Years later, I met my husband and we decided to start a family in Doncaster. Then this gave me the opportunity to open the first Thai Restaurant in Doncaster, The Bangkok Thai Restaurant. Ten years of running a successful business, we wanted to expand and we decided to open the Bangkok Royal Elephant. Now we’re starting a new chapter by opening the only Thai Restaurant in Doncaster, Thai At The Sal.”

IN BRIEF

Plans for a greener future Leading Doncaster manufacturer Polypipe has stepped in to help Rotherham’s Grade I listed stately home Wentworth Woodhouse lay the way for a green energy heating system. The company has donated over 160 metres of structured wall pipe and fittings which means the Preservation Trust can divert modern sewerage pipes away from its historic cellars. “Polypipe’s help means a massive 20th century sewerage pipe currently cutting an ugly path through the cellars can now be rerouted” said Wentworth Woodhouse’s facilities manager Julie Readman. The 225mm diameter Polysewer system will be laid around the exterior of the building. It is one of many ‘visitorunfriendly’ tasks the Preservation Trust’s team has been able to tackle while the mansion is closed during the pandemic. The work is being funded by a £331,000 government Culture Recovery Fund grant received in September 2020 via Historic England and the Historic Houses Association. Edlington-based Polypipe Building Products, which celebrated its 40th year in 2020, is the UK’s leading manufacturer of plastic piping systems for the residential market. Cameron McLellan DL, Divisional Managing Director at Polypipe Residential Systems, commented: “The work the Preservation Trust is doing to preserve this truly breath-taking property for future generations to enjoy is amazing. As a proud South Yorkshire-based business, we are pleased to be able to support the trust on this exciting project.”

All change at The Lakeside Nottinghamshire-based weddings and events venue www.thelakeside.co.uk have announced they are launching two new bars and restaurants, complete with an outdoor terrace for an alfresco dining experience. New public art A sculpture created by leading artist, Michelle Reader, will be installed at The Harley Gallery in Nottinghamshire as part of a new trail linking contemporary art with Britain’s earliest cave art at Creswell Crags. The 40-minute circular route will take visitors along the Robin Hood Way footpath on the historic Welbeck estate, giving families the chance to explore art in a new way. The £60,000 project aims to draw more people to the visitor attractions, near Worksop, in North Nottinghamshire. The sculpture, made out of architectural salvage materials sourced from the Welbeck estate, will form the start of the trail. Michelle, who is based within the Harley Studios on the estate, has been making sculptures from reclaimed materials for more than 23 years. She is often commissioned by businesses such as BSkyB and the Port of London Authority to create sculptures from salvaged materials.

Enjoy your conservatory all year round SAGARS’ REVOLUTIONARY 365 CONSERVATORY ROOF INSULATION SYSTEM KEEPS CONSERVATORIES WARM IN WINTER AND COOL IN SUMMER. onservatories have long been a desirable addition to the home but too often become neglected parts of the house if they’re too cold in winter and too hot in summer. But what if that could change? Sagars’ 365 conservatory roof insulation system can transform your conservatory and make it into a room you can use all year round . At this time of year it’s all about keeping warm and Sagars’ insulation system, originally believed to have been inspired by NASA, can do just that, as well as keeping you super cool in summer. The insulation is built up of complex layers of aluminium foil and insulation that is perfect for insulating conservatory roofs, reducing heat loss by about 95 per cent and keeping the heat out in summer. It’s finished with brilliant white tongue and groove insulated pvc panels to give a maintenance-free bright appearance. Using the 365 insulation system, Sagars, a family-based Yorkshire company, have been turning hundreds of draughty unused conservatories into rooms that can be used for any purpose, all year round. VAT is charged at five per cent as this type of insulation comes under the government’s energy savings rate. The cost of a 365 system is far less than you might think, with a 3m x 3m conservatory typically costing around £1,699 including VAT, fitting and comes with a ten-year guarantee. All work is completed in the day, following government social distancing guidelines to keep customers and fitters safe.

It looks really good, very pleased and impressed with the quality of the work. Can’t believe how warm it is already. If you are thinking about it like I was, just get it done, you won’t regret it. Will definitely recommend.” Dawn, 5 January 2021 “Great company to do business with. Had my conservatory clad and now it’s a cosy functioning space. The two guys who attended were really nice and just got on with it and cleaned up after themselves. Great price too. Would definitely recommend.” Elaine, 8 January 2021 For more reviews, please search Trustpilot.

MOTORING

Celebrating the birthday of an icon

RICHARD ABBEY LOOKS TO THE PAST – AND THE FUTURE.

In the summer of 1976,Volkswagen launched a distinctively sporty Golf onto the market: the GTI. At that time no one at Volkswagen had any idea that the Golf GTI would eventually become the world’s most successful compact sports car. But that is exactly what happened. Now Volkswagen is marking the 45th birthday of this iconic car with an anniversary model: the Golf GTI Clubsport 45. The Clubsport 45 is ready to take to the road with more individual customisation than ever before. The exterior boasts a striking black roof complete with black roof spoiler, in homage to the black-framed rear window of the first Golf GTI. The interior of the anniversary model also showcases classic GTI insignia. With the new Golf GTI Clubsport 45, Volkswagen is adding a new chapter to the high-performance GTI versions released.

What price for power? As well as an increase in power output over its predecessor, the new CUPRA Leon is also more efficient, returning up to 37.2mpg on the combined WLTP cycle and CO2 emissions from 171g/km.

Volvo recharges The future of Volvo Cars is electric, and the new Volvo C40 Recharge is the latest manifestation of the company’s commitment to a zero-emission future. The C40 Recharge has all the benefits of an SUV but with a lower and sleeker design. It is based on the CMA vehicle platform and is the first Volvo model in history designed as pure electric only. Already by 2025, it aims for 50 per cent of its global sales volume to consist of fully electric cars, with the rest hybrids. By 2030, it plans for every car it sells to be pure electric. The propulsion consists of twin electric motors, one on the front and one on the rear axle, powered by a 78kWh battery that can be fast charged to 80 per cent in about 40 minutes (expected). It offers an anticipated range of around 420km (261 miles), which is expected to improve over time via overthe-air software updates.

‘Sport for all’ QUEEN ETHELBURGA’S A SPORTING FINALIST IN ISA AWARDS 2020. ueen Ethelburga’s Collegiate is proud to have been the only independent school in the North of England and one of only three finalists for the ISA Award 2020 for Outstanding Sport (*Large School). The Independent Schools Association (ISA) Awards is an annual event that celebrates success in Member schools from across the UK, and recognises the breadth of quality and provision in independent education across the country. In addition to offering its students professional standard, state-ofthe-art sporting facilities in its on campus dedicated Sports Village, the Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate TEAM QE mantra is ‘sport for all’. The Collegiate offers a supportive environment where all students can try their hand at a whole host of sports and activities, to encourage them to grow up to lead healthy, active lifestyles. Jeff Smith, Principal of the Collegiate, said: “We’re thrilled to have been a finalist in this category in recognition of our outstanding sports offering here at QE. We’re proud of our tailored and inclusive approach to sports and wellbeing, which we offer from Nursery to Year 13, as part of a wide and varied curriculum. “We encourage and support our students to be active and healthy. new sports and progress to whatever level they are able; some students take part in a more intense and focused Performance Sports Pathway in their chosen field. “The Collegiate Performance Sports Pathway gives students the opportunity to see what competitive sport really looks like, in an environment where students can push themselves to achieve their full potential, both mentally and physically. The performance pathway is designed to accelerate the student’s development, focusing on areas such as skill acquisition, tactical, technical and mental skills that are all needed to become better sports men and women. “Contributing to its finalist status and evidence of the outstanding sports offer in action, lies in the success beyond QE, with many former TEAM QE students having gone on to university scholarships and professional opportunities in the UK and internationally. They all credit the

work completed at QE as a crucial part of their success. “For example, in 2020 QE saw three football students who moved on to the next chapter of their educational journey in the USA, to complete football scholarships at Eckerd College in Florida, Barry University in Florida and NYACK. One of the students has also signed a professional football contract with Coventry City Football Club. “Within rugby we have had four students sign professional contracts, and in basketball we have seen five further students gain scholarships to Findlay University in Ohio and Ave Maria University in Florida.” Rob Rawlinson, Head of Sport at QE, said: “Our students know that being part of TEAM QE means having ambition and determination, team spirit, and demonstrating positive leadership, both on and off the pitch or court. Our aim is not only to develop our students physically and build them for success in their sporting ventures, but also holistically. “The TEAM QE approach supports students to become better decision makers, something that helps them in every facet of their lives.” Get more information on Queen Ethelburga’s sporting offer at https://www.qe.org/home/academic/team-qe.
